Project-finance risk assessment is mature and approached systematically. Mining industry due diligence remains fragmented with specialists addressing different aspects of the project such as reserves/JORC, environmental impact, commodity market, even financial analysis/ modelling. Each professional has a natural tendency to believe that the risk factors they have examined are the key ones necessary to be reviewed, as if their review will stand in isolation from others in the way a project materialises. By first laying out the project risk categories and risk matrices, this paper examines the due diligence process with a keen eye to the risk assessment and overlap/interaction. Some cross fertilisation of due diligence techniques from other industry sectors is placed into the mining context. Six case studies are then presented with regards to due diligence features in each projectÆs feasibility review or financial information/ offering memorandum. A power case first shows the differences between the due diligence expectations of banks versus bond financings. Then some Australian and Indonesian mining development cases are analysed to see the due diligence learning points. Some of these were project/due diligence failures. The conclusion focuses on the value of a systematic risk assessment for project evaluation, all from the project-finance perspective.

Finely ground beryl was decomposed by mixing with ground limestone and soda ash and heating at 900°C for 4-6 hr. The sintered mater:al was then crushed and leached by boiling under reflux with 5N sulphuric acid for up to 4 hr. The liquor containing Be, AI, Fe and other elements as sulphates, was separated from the residue which consisted mainly of silica and gypsum, either by filtration or bydecantation washing.The clarified leach liquor was first treated to remove Fe+++ by contacting with a primary amine-kerosene solution in 2 countercurrent stages. The iron free liquor was then passed to a 4-stage counter-current extraction unit where it was contacted with O·5M di- (2 ethyl hexyl) phosphoric acid (EHPA) in kerosene. Under the operating conditions, 99 per cent of the Be and 7 per cent of the Al was extracted.The Be and Al were stripped from the organic phase by sodium hydroxide solution of suitable concentration to form soluble "beryllate" and "aluminate" respectively. Most of the Be was subsequently precipitatedas Be(OH)2 by heating the alkaline solution to 90°C, the Al remaining in solution. After filtration and washing, the Be(OH)2 could be ignited directly to BeO at about 1000°C or used as a feed to further purification stages if required.A small counter-current extraction unit was operated continuously using liquor derived from the sintering and leaching stages. Dataobtained in batch laboratory tests were confirmed. A product obtained by ignition of the washed "beryllate" precipitate contained more than 99 per cent BeO.INTRODUCTIONIn 1958 an investigation was commenced into the recovery of beryllium oxide from beryl, as part of a programme to utilize mineral resources of South Australia. A pyrite flotation concentrate assaying 0·065 oz/ton gold was investigated to determine the mode of occurrence of the gold. Ftom cyanidation and acid leaching experiments it was concluded that O· 02-0· 03 oz/ton goldwas in solid solution in pyrite and the balance of the gold was finely dispersed as grains throughout the pyrite.Autoradiography and electron-probe examination of possible areas in briquetted concentrate did not detect any grains of gold. Neutron irradiation and gamma spectrometry confirmed on 100 mg samples the fire assays obtained on 1 assay ton samples.Oxidation to hematite and reduction to magnetite at 600°C made practically the whole of the gold extractable by cyanide. This technique could be of major significance for gold ores which contain a substantial amount of "refractory" gold.

The commercial application of electrolysis to zinc sulphate solutions for the production of metallic zinc is a development ·of the past twenty years. Earlier attempts failed to give satisfactory results, chiefly because certain harmful elements were either not recognised as being present in the solution, or, if recognised, suitable methods of removal had not been developed. The electrodeposition of zinc from zinc sulphate solution is extremely sensitive to the influence of a great many factors, all of which appear to be closely inter-related.Some of these factors tend to minimise the necessity for a high degree of purity of the solution, while other factors aggravate the harmful nature of certain impurities.The relationship existing betweBn the various factors in zinc electrolysis makes a general discussion of the injurious effect of impurities very difficult since, under one set of conditions a given concentration of an impurity may be of minor: importance, where its under another set of conditions the same concentration of that impurity may prove dangerous to successful electrolysis.

In the present study, formation of PCDD/Fs from carbon particles like æsootÆ, so called de novo synthesis, was experimentally simulated using the powder mixture of graphite and metallic chloride. Composite states of graphite and chloride particles were varied by the preliminary treatment, ie high-energy ball milling for different time or heating at different temperatures. These samples were subjected to the measurement of the rates of weight loss mainly due to the oxidation of carbon, the formation of absorbent organic chlorides (AOX) and the formation of PCDD/Fs at 300¦C. The amount of PCDD/Fs formation increased by applying certain pretreatments. Further, linear relationships were obtained among the formation rates of PCDD/Fs and AOX and the weight loss of sample. These results will give useful information to investigate the mechanism of PCDD/Fs formation from unburned combustible carbon and hydrocarbon in thermal processes.

Automatic control of semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mills has often been considered complex. Recent experiences at Century Zinc (worldÆs second largest open pit zinc mine) refute this. Together with operating knowledge and appropriate control techniques high quality control is achievable. In this application model-based, constraint, and multiple output control were employed. The control was implemented using standard blocks in the plant DCS. The resulting overall control strategy fulfils the operating objectives and controls the mill with minimal operator involvement over 95 per cent of the time. Previous campaigns using expert systems and complex DCS based control have lacked durability. Their fall into disuse is briefly discussed.

The Kisladag Mine, Turkey, is a large porphyry gold deposit which is mined by open pit methods. In operation for over ten years, Kisladag provides an excellent example of how attention to a geologic feature, namely hydrothermal alteration, became a very effective predictive geological tool for planning and operation. The alteration domains were initially used as a geological tool to assist with establishment of resource model domains and to guide delineation drilling, but they were soon recognised to be correlative to geotechnical characteristics (affecting pit slope angles) and metallurgical performance (heap leach recoveries). Recent developments in spectral processing allow the systematic quantification of complex overlapping alteration phases and have greatly improved the ability to rapidly define internally consistent alteration domains for geotechnical and geometallurgical purposes.Alteration at Kisladag comprises a central core potassic (K-feldspar-biotite) zone, a tourmaline-white mica enveloping zone, an advanced argillic lithocap on the deposit’s eastern side and an overprinting pervasive argillic zone. These alteration zones and their distribution were based initially on strictly qualitative, visual mineralogical logging of diamond drill core. With the need for more accurate and consistent identification of the alteration mineral suites, particularly the phyllosilicate phases, logging was augmented by systematic measurement of spectral data using a Terraspec instrument.Recently the Kisladag spectral database (over 85 000 readings) was reprocessed by the newly developed methodology (aiSIRIS™) that allows relative quantification of the spectrally-responsive minerals. Visualising this transformed spectral mineralogy at various mineral concentration thresholds using implicit modelling software (Leapfrog®) led to the creation of consistent mineralogical and alteration domains that are used for the definition of geotechnical and geometallurgical parameters. The zinc-lead-silver mineral resource at Lady Loretta ranks amongst the worldÆs richest when measured in terms of in situ metal grades. However, the project remains undeveloped 28 years after its discovery in 1969. The primary obstacle to development has been the fine and complex grain structure of its ores, which make flotation concentration inefficient even with fine grinding. The size and remote location of the deposit have also hindered exploitation. BUKA planned to directly fume the volatile target metals from the ore when it acquired the project. Intensive, post-acquisition modeling showed the innovative processing route to be uneconomic, notwithstanding high metals recovery and low waste content in fume product. Progressive modifications and supplements to the underlying fuming process enhanced economics and resulted in a new mine-to-metal processing route for zinc-lead-silver ores. The proprietary, three-stage BUKA Zinc Process offers technical, economic and environmental advantages. It is expected to find widespread application in the treatment of ores and residues. However, neither continued R&D nor application to Lady LorettaÆs currently delineated resource can be justified under prevailing market conditions. The objectives and results of each step in the process development sequence are outlined with reference to their impact on the commercial viability of the Lady Loretta project.

The 8 ft by 91/2 ft drive which joined No. 7 Shaft with Browne Shaft on the 1,480 ft level was extended from both ends and met at a point approximately 12,000 ft from No. 7 (2,000 ft from Browne).The surveying required for this 2 1/2 mile haulage drive called for greater accuracy than was obtainable from South Mine standard methods. Procedures and devices from published information were tried and modified as required to suit local conditions. Several new methods were applied and improved as the drive advanced. The control of angular, linear and level measurements was perhaps considerably in excess of the requirements, but this was offset by abnormally large discrepancies resulting from shaft plumbing. The accuracy of the final breakthrough, although not to the standard desired, was sufficient to complete the connection without inconvenience and added cost.INTRODUCTIONThe acquisition of the Browne Shaft leases in January 1962 presented the management of Broken Hill South Limited with the problem of transporting ore from these leases to its mill. It was eventually decided that diesel locomotivehaulage through a 2t mile drive on the 1,480 ft level between the two mines was the best solution. The drive was advanced from both ends after Browne Shaft was deepened by 80 ft to reach the 1,480 ft level horizon. Each end advancedabout 15 ft/day with the miners working three 7 hr shifts. Blasting was restricted to the end of the shift.The survey work involved five shaft plumbings and 78 theodolite stations in a traverse, underground and surface,of more than 5 miles. Because of the exceptional length of the drive, an unusually high degree of reliability was required.The aim was for a maximum error at breakthrough of 1 ft 1 in 30,000, and to secure this, precise methods of linear measurement were necessary. Shaft plumbing in particular posed special difficulties.

Tapira Mine (Tapira, MG, Brazil) is the largest phosphate ore and concentrate producer in Brazil. The mine is an open pit, which until recently operated with a large equipment fleet and now uses a smaller fleet operated by contractors. The annual production reaches 17 Mt of ore plus 14 Mt of waste at a stripping ratio of 0.82. Defining the geological boundaries and forecasting the annual production can be a difficult task if not performed on a reliable model. The geological model has been totally reviewed as well as the estimation process. Ordinary Kriging has been used to build the new block model with P2O5 and contaminant grades. After estimation, block model validation and classification criteria definition to assess resources and reserves, the result is given by the life-of-mine plan is defined after pit optimisation and design. The Lerchs-Grossmann algorithm implemented in the NPV Scheduler was used to define the long-term production targets based on the main parameters P2O5 and the contaminants that are just important to the beneficiation process.

The intention is to review the opportunities that exist for incorporating environmental planning into mining industry practice in New Zealand. The coal mining examples serve to make some general points which have some application for many types of mining.

Pre-concentration of low grade ores can improve the economic and environmental sustainability of an operation significantly, with opportunities for implementation ranging from run-of-mine to mill discharge depending on ore specific characteristics. For a gravity separation, where the performance is fundamentally constrained by mineral liberation, these feeds often represent a very difficult separation given the dominance of the relatively coarse gangue and fine liberation sizes. Thus, building knowledge of the feed through characterisation of the density distribution is critical to assessing amenability before progressing towards lab/pilot-scale test work and full-scale operation. The traditional approach to determining the density distribution typically involved sink/float testing, however, recent developments in hydrodynamic fractionation using inclined channels now offers a more cost-effective alternative with minimal health and environmental risk. A non-hazardous dense liquid, namely an aqueous solution of lithium heteropolytungstates (LST), is supplied as fluidisation to a REFLUXTM Classifier, consisting of a vertical section below a system of inclined channels, operating in semi-batch configuration. Fractionation is achieved by increasing the flow rate incrementally and collecting the particles to form a series of flow fractions. The purpose of this paper is to present this new method in the form of a case study, aimed at assessing the amenability of a low grade gold-bearing sulfide ore to pre-concentration. The robustness in the method is demonstrated through comparison with sink/float data, examining the density distribution and the liberation-limited product grade and recovery achievable. These data are then used as a benchmark to assess water-based continuous gravity separations conducted on the feed using a laboratory-scale REFLUXTM Classifier. This data set is used as the basis for process modelling and empirical validation for the recently established partition surface of the separator.

The Pike River Coal Company is set to develop the Pike River Coal Mine in the Paparoa Ranges of New ZealandÆs South Island. The mine will be developed to extract a coking coal deposit of the Brunner Seam, some 46 km north-east of Greymouth, using a combination of continuous miners and hydraulic extraction.   The mining area is located within Department of Conservation (DOC) land and is adjacent to the escarpment of the Paparoa Range and the Paparoa National Park. As such, the major restriction to planned extraction is protection of:   +        the western escarpment, +        vertical and sub-vertical rock faces, +        permanent water courses, +        significant vegetation, and +        steep slopes.   The mine will use its elevation advantage to hydraulically flume coal from the working faces to the pit bottom area where it will be slurried to approximately 35 per cent density of solids and pumps down a slurry line to the coal prep plant some 10.5 km down the Pike River Valley. The coal will be sold on the export market as a high quality coking coal for international steel making.

Many mining operations are uncertain of what costs they should be achieving. The majority of cost estimates are based on historical costs that have added contingency factors. Historical costs are a valuable source of information but a more precise costing method is necessary. There are several alternative methods for predicting costs. A methodology which provides the best indication of the achievable costs is one using a standard inventory list and a bill of quantities. The model is termed a Basic Principles model and addresses basic design principles and engineering constraints.

Test Work on High Throughput Diamond Tracer Recovery from Alluvial Recovery Tailings with a Containerised Optical Sorter Under Real Production Conditions Worldwide alluvial diamond deposits are traditionally processed with dense media separation and XRF sorters, hand picking or grease tables. The test work conducted verifies the performance of an optical sorter detecting the transparency of particles for diamond recovery from the DMS concentrate, eg XRF-sorter and handpicking tailings. The containerised setup enables economically feasible, high throughput, semi-mobile setups to retreat recovery tailings from alluvial and also primary deposits. The test work has been conducted with quartz and glass particles, which are less transparent or comparably transparent, under realistic production conditions on a 600 mm belt machine with an installed electrical power of only 21 kW. The results show that 99 per cent recovery can be reached at a throughput of 10 t/h in the -8 + 2 mm fraction and at 22 t/h in the -25 + 8 mm fraction. At a throughput of 18 t/h a recovery of 88 per cent has been assessed. At a further escalation of the throughput, dust in the sorter container made sorting impossible in the coarse fraction and the recovery decreased significantly in the fine fraction. Analysis of the belt coverage indicates that higher throughputs of the coarse fraction can be fed onto the optical sorter if the dust extraction system is improved. The results are basis for the decision to conservatively feed 20 t/h of the coarse fraction and 17 t/h of the fine fraction in day to day production. The settings have been applied to sort alluvial recovery tailings in South Africa and will be applied to sort the recovery tailings of a primary deposit in Lesotho. The test work has shown that an optical sorter can be used to retreat recovery tailings with high throughputs. The compact setup of a screen and a 9 m standard container enables semi-mobile, temporary setups for small recovery tailings dumps and remote areas. In addition, sorting on transparency ensures the recovery of high value low-fluorescent diamonds.

The Golden Cross low sulfidation epithermal deposit produced approximately 750,000 ounces of Au from two ore zones: the underground Empire Vein System and the open pit stockwork. The Empire Vein System has at least eight stages of vein formation: (1) sulfide veins, (2) black veins, (3) massive veins, (4) banded veins, (5) thin white veins, (6) crumbly veins, (7) massive/platy calcite veins, and (8) flattened rhomb calcite veins. Gold mineralisation occurred relatively early in the lifetime of the system, dominantly during 2 through 4. The late calcite veins (7 and 8) and early sulfide veins (1) are barren. The vein system formed in a dominantly extensional environment, though some compressional faulting may have also existed during vein formation. There is no evidence for significant strike-slip faulting during vein formation, highlighting the fact that explorationists should pursue on-site structural patterns rather than fashionable models.

The Nokomai valley is located within the pumpellyite/actinolite facies of the Otago Schist, a regional scale metamorphic belt in Southern New Zealand. The Otago Schist is dominated by psammitic and pelitic greyschist with more subordinate greenschist, quartzite, marble, and ultramafics. Mining in the Nokomai, began in the 1860s, with sluicing of terrace gravels in the lower valley. Good gold is reported to have been won from unconformities within very weathered gravels lower in the terrace sequences, and particularly from within channels which dissect these older deposits. Gold was recovered from these terraces in the main Nokomai Valley, and two major tributaries (Victoria Gully and Bullock Head Creek). In the period 1885 - 1887 further gold was discovered in basal gravels beneath the Nokomai flats when the Hunter brothers sank two shafts and excavated a connecting drive to discover a lead 1.2 - 1.5 m thick. The Golden Lion Sluicing Company began mining in 1896 using an hydraulic elevator on the very 'tight' 1.8 - 2.4 m of basal gravels. This operation was followed by the Nokomai Gold Sluicing Company whose average return grade was >485 mglm3 until mining ceased in 1943 (Wopereis; 1988, 1989). A quartz vein, Commissioners Reef, was worked for small production at some time during the 1920 - 1930 period, until fault termination of the vein ceased production.

Acid rock drainage (ARD), commonly found in vicinities of sulfidic mines, possess properties capable of widely affecting the surrounding environment by acidification and heavy metal pollution. In most ARD treatments, various alkaline sources are used to neutralise the acid produced. Utilisation of highly alkaline fly ashes instead of raw materials is a cost-effective alternative, which lately have become increasingly popular. In laboratory batch experiments, neutralising capacity of fly ash was studied during 20 days. ARD was added to the fly ash once a day, for each increment the liquid to solid ratio (L/S ratio) was increased. At an early stage of the experiment (day 6, L/S ratio 12), the concentration of barium in solution unexpectedly increased by a factor of 50 (from 200 to 10 000 ¦g+l-1). This high concentration also sustained the following two days (L/S ratios 14 and 16) before dropping to the original level. pH showed a slight increase during these observations (pH 12.4 - 12.7). The phenomenon was also observed in a parallel and identical series. In addition to barium, aluminium and strontium clearly increased in the same manner, however not as much as barium. Furthermore, concentrations of chromium and molybdenum noticeably decreased at these distinct L/S ratios (12, 14 and 16). The behaviour of barium and subsequently strontium, aluminium, chromium and molybdenum is only partially understood. The decrease of chromium and molybdenum is suggested to be due to incorporation into the interlayer regions of hydrocalumite (Ca4Al2(OH)12(OH)2+6H2O), replacing the hydroxide groups, which also explains the increase in pH. Moreover, the increase of barium, strontium and aluminium could be attributable to dissolution of the silicate mineral celsian (Ba,Sr(Al2Si2O8)). Alternatively, barium and strontium increase could be explained by dissolution of a Ba,Sr(SO4)-solid solution and aluminium increase by dissolution of hydrocalumite or ettringite.
