The Reefton Goldfield has produced 67 t of gold from mesothermal vein gold deposits in metasedimentary rocks of the Greenland Group (Cambrian-Ordovician). The Globe-Progress deposit contributed 13.2 t (418,000 oz) of this total, predominantly from quartz veins. Recently a resource of 14 Mt at 1.96 g/t Au (27.5 t or 882,300 oz of contained gold) has been delineated at Globe-Progress in quartz vein remnants and disseminated within adjacent sedimentary rock, much of which has been locally brecciated. The breccias consist of quartz vein and sedimentary wall rock fragments set in a matrix of clay ærock flourÆ and sulphide (arsenopyrite plus minor pyrite and stibnite). Gold, closely associated with sulphide, is disseminated within the breccia. Disseminated gold also occurs in massive siltstone and sandstone adjacent to the quartz veins and breccias. Exploration drilling at Globe-Pogress, and several other Reefton prospects (e.g. Capleston, Merrijigs, Big River and Alexander River), has intersected zones of disseminated arsenopyrite carrying up to 20 g/t more gold. These mineralised sediments commonly have little or no megascopic quartz and or carbonate veining. There is little visible indication of former primary or secondary permeability for the passage of hydrothermal fluid and deposition of gold. However, porosity and permeability were formerly present in inter-granular pore spaces and microveinlets now filled with quartz, carbonate and K-mica. The Fosterville gold deposit in Victoria bears many similarities to the Globe-Progress deposit at Reefton, in terms of age, host rocks, hydrothermal alteration and mineralisation style. Many ofthe disseminated deposits in Nova Scotia, including deposits at North Brookfield and Moose River (Touquoy Zone), have similar characteristics to the Reefton disseminated mineralisation, but commonly have abundant pyrrhotite and some deposits have disseminated metal alloy grains of complex metallurgy.

Behaviour of minor elements in the dust collecting system connected with fluidized bed roaster for zinc concentrate was investigated by use of the bench scale experimental appara- tus. The dust collecting system was consisting of two dust chambers, hot electrostatic precip- itator, washing tower, mist electrostatic pre- cipitator, drying tower, absorption towers and potassium permanganate solution towers. Some volatile elements such as lead, cadmium and arsenic tend to concentrate in the fine calcine obtained in hot electrostatic precipitator especially in the case of the roasting with insufficient air supply. Special attention was paid to behaviour of mercury. In the roasting tests for plain zinc concentrate, it was considered that most mercury volatilizes at first as elemental vapour in the roaster, but with decrease in temperature of gas around a half of mercury forms compound, and both elemen- tal and compound forms of mercury were found in the gas stream. Elemental mercury is of course difficult to be trapped in the dust collecting system. To promote the compound formations, some additives for concentrate, such as selenium and halogens were effective, especially selenium of a few times equivalent to form HgSe repre- sented complete conversion of mercury from elemental to compound. To clarify the behaviour and removal mech- anism of mercury, various small scale laboratory tests were also carried out. It was confirmed that mercury sulfate formation is possible if temperature and flow rate are adjusted adequate- ly for gas stream consisting of 02-SO2-N2. To trap elemental mercury, various substances were tested, and excellent results were obtained with selenium. Satisfactory results were obtained with a selenium disc heated at 100 to 200¦C in a mercury containing gas stream. Also, applica- bility of scrubbing method with SeO2 solution was investigated, and the solution containing a few hundred ppm SeO2, 0.01 per cent additive and 6 per cent H2SO4 proved to be satisfactory.

The Nokomai Gold Mining Project commenced production in January 1992. The Project continues a history of mining in theNokomai Valley which extended from 1863 to 1942. L & M Mining Limited have held interests in the valley since 1980. In 1990 the Nokomai Joint Venture was formed with the Hore family, the owners of Nokomai Station, to mine a large alluvial gold resource in the valley. The mine is located adjacent to the Mataura Brown Trout fishery and required extensive environmental studies prior to granting of permits. The mine is budgeted to work for 20 months, processing 460 000 m3 of wash material. During this period, contract miners, Downer Mining Limited, will move in excess of seven million cubic metres of overburden from the deposit.

At Waiuta near Reefton there is a remarkable vein of quartz <1 m thick which, apart from small offsets on late-stage faults, is a sheet like body essentially continuous down-dip and along-strike for> 1 km. The vein strikes NNE and dips steeply west (032/78¦W). From 1906-1951 the Blackwater mine produced 740,404 ounces of gold from the vein, called the æBirthday ReefÆ, which was one third of the total production from Reefton Goldfield and the fourth largest gold mine in New Zealand. Within the mine the vein is disrupted into a series of northeast-plunging shoots by late-stage faults. Similar faults, but with larger displacements, were thought in the past to truncate the vein at the northern and southern ends of the mine. The implication of this fault dissection model is that offset remnants of the vein await discovery. This study investigated the geometry of the vein and its relationship to host-rock structures and late-stage faults. A new model considers folding and lithological variation in the host-rocks to be fundamental in controlling the scale and geometry of veining, but does not rule out the possibility of some late-stage fault dissection. The Birthday Reef truncates 200-400 m wavelength folds in Greenland Group host-rocks at c.10¦ angle, that results in variation in the structural properties of host-rocks along strike every ~1350-2500 m. The spacing of fold hinges in the wall-rock veins is equivalent to the strike length of historic mining, implying that the Birthday Reef is probably hosted in a single limb of a fold. Similar relationships between mineralisation and host-rock folds appear to be present elsewhere in the Reefton Goldfield (e.g. Capleston and Murray Creek group of mines). Exploration targets are located one fold wavelength (c.1350-2500 m) further along strike from the Blackwater mine and relatively barren rock is expected in between the mine and target areas. Refining the location of folds and different host rock lithologies, using geophysical data and quality geological mapping, is the key to reducing exploration risks and discovering further resources.

The Yaojialing zinc-gold polymetallic deposit is a newly discovered, large skarn deposit in the Middle-Lower Yangtze metallogenic belt, East China. It is located in the transitional zone between the Tongling uplift block and the Fanchang faulted basin. It is mainly hosted in the contact zone between early Cretaceous granodiorite porphyry and Carboniferous-Triassic limestone, or occurs in limestone xenoliths within the intrusion. Skarn and stratabound massive sulfide orebodies are the primary ore styles. Sulfide ?34SV-CDT values indicate a magmatic sulfur source, in common with most deposits in the Tongling block. Calcite d13CV-PDB and d18OV-SMOW ratios reveal that marine carbonates were the major source of carbon in late-stage hydrothermal fluids. Eyewash safety showers located in remote hot environments may be unsafe to use due to excess water temperature and high risk levels of water borne bacteria such as Legionella. Australian Standard AS 4775 specifies that dispensed water shall be bacteria free and have a maximum temperature of 37.8°C. Legionnaires disease is contracted when water aerosols containing Legionella bacteria are inhaled.Laboratory tests show 30 to 70 times more aerosols are generated by showers operating at 38°C than with showers operating at 25°C. Furthermore, excess temperature in flushing water can cause burn injuries leading to hospitalisation, skin grafts and/or permanent scarring. Excess temperature also increases the rate of reaction to corrosive substances, opens pores in the skin to allow greater dermal penetration and can cause dizziness and fainting by dilating blood vessels and reducing blood pressure.CITATION:Challenor, H A, 2017. Preliminary work being undertaken on the optimisation of decision strategies for an open-pit metalliferous deposit is presented. The Optimal Control method has been selected rather than the easier to implement Dynamic Programming method of optimisation since a fundamental criteria of Dynamic Programming is violated. Essentially a system of state equations and decision variables is developed for the operation under consideration.

Entry of personnel under a vertical raise bored hole is not standard practice in Australia. Where access is required below a rise, mining operations must be confident that they understand the capacity of the ground control specified and installed. Physical modelling was conducted on Callie mine to evaluate the performance of 5 mm steel wire weldmesh secured to the base of a vertical raise bored hole of 1.4 m diameter. Joint orientation data was used with Unwedge to calculate a series of potential wedges likely to form within the rise. The mass of the most likely wedges were then replicated by collecting rocks in 5 kg increments (¦10 per cent), which were allowed to freefall onto installed mesh at the base of a 40 m vertical rise. The results indicate that two sheets of mesh can retain a freefalling rock of at least 20 kg mass although rupture of strands can result. This paper outlines the test conditions, expected results based on theoretical calculations and actual outcomes of the testing.

The Norman B Keevil Institute of Mining Engineering, or the Department of Mining Engineering (the Department), at CanadaÆs University of British Columbia (UBC) is addressing the integration of sustainable development concepts into mining education and research on behalf of industry and society. Over the past decade, the DepartmentÆs education and research model has been evolving to incorporate collaborative and multidisciplinary strategies, where sustainability initiatives are taught in classes, supported in research and discussed in a voluntary collective of mostly graduate students û the Sustainability Working Group (SWG). The SWG has brought together a diverse array of disciplines from academia, industry, government, non-governmental organisations (NGOs) and mining communities. The operational mechanisms and structure of the SWG have enabled momentum to be gained through several multidisciplinary educational and research networking initiatives. It acts to attract new students with diverse backgrounds, foster innovative research, develop relationships and networks, and create the space to discuss progressive ideas and projects. The original cohort of SWG graduate students laid the foundation for sustainable research initiatives within the Department at UBC. Novel research has incorporated topics such as: community resilience, artisanal small-scale mining, sustainability indicators and corporate social responsibility, environmental assessment and impact benefit agreements and the recycling of waste. Propelled by the support of the Department and inspired by the works completed, a host of new graduate students have embarked on their research quests to integrate sustainability principles into their projects. Such projects include: social impacts and benefits of mining, artisanal small-scale mining, community health, the production and transport of mine pollutants, mine waste management, mineral process plant design and the evolution of community education and mine policy. This paper reports on the departmentÆs continuing research and development towards an understanding and evaluations of the ongoing contributions of mining to sustainable development.

The Porgera gold deposit is an epithermal gold base-metal deposit located in the Enga Province of Papua New Guinea. Gold-silver-sphalerite-galena-pyrite mineralisation is related to stocks and dykes of dioritic composition which have intruded a series of folded marine sediments, mainly shales and siltstones, often with calcareous and carbonaceous horizons, of middle Jurassic to middle Eocene age. The most intensely mineralised zone is at Waruwari Hill, where the mineralisation occurs predominantly as massive mixed sulphide veins, and less frequently as quartz-chlorite veins and as disseminations. Mineralisation occurs in all rock types and several phases of mineralisation have been recognised.

Bendigo Mining Limited has established a modern underground gold mine and processing plant at Bendigo in central Victoria. The Bendigo goldfield produced around 22 000 000 oz of gold between 1851 and 1954. Approximately 4 000 000 oz were sourced from surface alluvial workings with the remaining 18 000 000 oz won from underground quartz reefs. The modern mine is accessed via the Swan Decline, which commences at the Kangaroo Flat site on the southern outskirts of Bendigo and progresses in a north easterly direction between the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines, reaching a depth of almost 1000 m below the City of Bendigo. Development of this decline commenced in 1998. Since that time 20 km of underground development has been completed. Exploration drilling, on-reef development and bulk sampling carried out between 1999 and 2005 resulted in the estimation of a Probable Ore Reserve of 700 000 tonnes at 9.0 g/t gold for 207 000 oz of gold. These Ore Reserves were contained within four reefs located on the Deborah and Sheepshead anticlines. Reef mining commenced in late 2005 from the Shywolup and Greater Garrard reefs. Material mined was stockpiled on the surface in preparation for commissioning of the process plant which commenced in mid 2006. Mining and processing were carried out between August 2006 and May 2007 during which time 176 000 tonnes were processed at an average grade of 5.4 g/t gold to produce 26 735 oz of gold. Plant feed was sourced from four reefs. This paper discusses some of the issues which were encountered with the definition and mining of these geologically variable and nuggetty reefs. This paper covers exploration techniques, grade estimation, mine geological control, mining methods, geotechnical issues and reconciliations. It will also discuss some of the lessons learnt and how these will be applied to future Mineral Resource and Ore Reserve estimation, as well as underground operations.

With processing a variety of orebodies at Glencore’s Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) has come a changing mineralogy and more complex requirements for treatment in the concentrator. From mid-2013 and into 2014 the grind size required to achieve sufficient mineral liberation for production of a quality concentrate has reduced significantly. What was once a final P80 of 35–45 microns was forced to 20 microns. This has necessitated some creative changes to the flow sheet that previously had a 937?kW Vertimill regrinding a rougher concentrate to 40 microns. EHM is able to utilise an existing M10 000 3 MW IsaMill previously used for magnetite processing, to provide a quick convenient solution without large scale capital expenditures. Operating the Vertimill and IsaMill in parallel in closed circuit was successful at reducing the P80 of the regrind circuit to below 20 microns which increased the final concentrate grade by four per cent. This circuit and intermediate circuits used are discussed. A recent Evening Post Headline read 'Officialdoms Inertia Risking Millions in Growth Strategy'. The article beneath that headline outlined the difficulties encountered by the Government's growth strategy projects and included the paragraph 'public efforts by Government to brush up communication of the widespread nature of its growth strategy is believed to have been matched by efforts in private by some ministers to overcome their frustration at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system'. The article went on to point out that these delays could cost New Zealand millions of dollars in lost overseas exchange savings. We as responsible citizens should be appalled or at least concerned that such costly delays should or even could occur. But those on the outside of the system who spend much of their working life prodding, reminding, pleading, cajoling, even begging, the bureaucracy should be excused a smirk or a smile or even a good belly laugh. The Minister is usually a part of the bureaucracy passing judgment on someone else's proposals. This time the Government has plans of its own. Plans which it wishes to see implemented as rapidly as possible and even with the assistance of the precautionary National Development Act with its 'fast track' provisions those plans have got bogged down in the bureaucratic machine which this Government has done as much as any other to create. In the circumstances, the thought of Her Majesty's Ministers frustrated at the constant delay while reports and paper work are moved between departments and through the system is not unpleasing.

Mine planning typically involves designing an operation to uncover coal with the minimum initial costs with reclamation planning and earthworks being done as an "add on" task. The landform is too steep to remain stable, has no drainage and frequently has areas of excessive acidity or alkalinity. Extensive earthworks are required to reduce grades to an acceptable level and create a drainage system. The flexibility available to the mining engineer to alter the post mining landscape clearly depends on the mining methods. Straight dragline stripping provides virtually no flexibility. However most mining operations over the term of current ten year plans have a substantial pre-strip component. It is this pre-strip material which has the potential to reduce the final reshaping earthworks. The reshaping operation itself is subject to some flexibility with various options being available to re-grade and provide drainage. The full utilisation of this flexibility to minimise earthworks cost should be the aim of reclamation design. ACIRL's current thrust in reclamation is aimed at the integration of mine planning and reclamation earthworks. This involves gathering all environment and agricultural criteria and designing the earth works necessary to produce an acceptable final landform. A key component of our work is the use of computer aided design (CADD) for the design of spoil piles, pre-strip dumps and spoil re-shaping. This approach has been applied to a number of mine sites with earthworks operations covering hundreds of hectares and hundreds of millions of cubic metres volume. We are continuing to provide that consultancy service and at the same time are involved in the development of more sophisticated software tools to apply to reclamation design.

In the middle of 2000, BHP Billiton implemented a Six Sigma Plus business improvement program known as Operating Excellence. It was developed based on a business bottom line initiative to deliver 35 - 40c/share and was one of the BHP Billiton strategies to deliver $2 earnings per share and a longer term $40 share price (BHP share price). Cannington is a silver, lead and zinc mine owned and operated by BHP Billiton. Through implementing Six Sigma Plus Cannington wanted to:have in-house capabilities to change and improve; tailor for the needs of each business unit and department; have æSharing of its KnowledgeÆ as a tool for improvement and have a competitive edge across Cannington û to be better than our competitors; learn from and leverage off the successes of improved safety and prior business improvement efforts; and ensure networking and sharing of information have common measurement systems across all assets. As with most business improvement programs û Six Sigma Plus was met with some degree of skepticism, especially given the amount of resources involved. After 18 months, much of this skepticism has been replaced with enthusiasm as peopleÆs understanding and acceptance of its fundamental concepts are being realised. The idea behind Six Sigma Plus is that it combines sound technical solutions with high acceptance by those who need to work with or implement the change. The future vision for Six Sigma Plus is that it become part of what we do at Cannington û just like safety and environment û so that Six Sigma tools and methodologies are used in our every day work.
