First Quantum Minerals (FQM) operates the Cayeli underground copper mine in Turkey. In response to a lost time incident (LTI) that occurred at the mine in 2022, the mine management decided to introduce a new safety approach on-site. The initiative began with a comprehensive safety culture analysis conducted by Arti Consulting, involving focus group studies. Employees actively participated in candid discussions, sharing their insights on safety issues and offering solutions. These conversations were meticulously audio recorded, resulting in over 150 000 words collected from more than 100 employees. These transcribed narratives then underwent rigorous semantic analysis, with the assistance of a sociologist, to identify and dissect patterns of unsafe behaviour. This analysis found areas for improvement, particularly in near-miss and incident reporting, quality of safety toolbox talks and effectiveness of pre-work risk assessments. Subsequently, mine management deliberated on these insights and devised corrective actions. An emphasis was placed on involving all employees in the corrective actions through communication training, empowering them to own the decisions and changes made. These impactful measures were seamlessly integrated into FQM’s Think! Safety Program, which embodies FQM’s sensible health and safety strategy. FQM partnered with Strika Entertainment (Strika) to develop innovative visual-first safety communication tools that use illustration, animation and graphic design to simplify complex messaging into easy-to-understand edutainment. As part of this approach to safety communications, Cayeli and Strika revamped the safety toolbox talks to encourage employees to voice their concerns and receive feedback when their suggestions were implemented. The response from employees has been positive, with over 200 unsafe behaviours and conditions reported within the initial two months of launching the Think! Safety Program. Remarkably, the Cayeli Mine has not experienced any LTIs for the past 500 days as of 9 December 2023. This paper encapsulates the dedicated efforts to transform Cayeli into a safer mining operation.

Waihi Gold Mining Company Limited, a wholly owned subsidiary of Normandy Mining Limited, operates the Martha gold mine, located in the township of Waihi, New Zealand. The operation, an unincorporated joint venture, comprises Normandy Mining Limited (67.070/0) and Otter Gold Mines (32.94%). Since gold was first discovered at Waihi in 1878, it has formed a key part of the region's economy. In 1909 the Waihi mine was described in a report to Parliament as æthe most important gold mine in Australasia and one of the greatest in the world.Æ That was a record year for production, with 416,813 tons of ore mined and some 1,120 men employed. Today the mine produces up to 1,250,000 tonnes of ore annually, and the project employs some 234 men and women. In 1999 the value of the gold and silver produced ($59 million) made up 47% of Waihi's estimated GDP. Waihi Gold has made significant contributions to the Waihi economy, community and the Hauraki region as a whole. Since the mine was re-opened in 1987, thousands of local people have benefited from the mine. In 1999, consents were granted allowing an extension to the mine life (the Extended Project) and this will result in a further seven years of economic benefits resulting from mining activity. The Company has undertaken extensive consultation throughout project planning, construction, operations and rehabilitation. Ongoing liaison and involvement with all community sectors, including Tangata Whenua and Iwi, local residents, recreational groups and schools remains an integral part of the operation. Throughout the life of the modern Martha Mine, the Company has actively supported the local community in the form of donations, sponsorships, the provision of amenities, and by participating in community events. A well established environmental team exists at the site. Environmental and community performance is measured by an independent five-assessment process, and the Company is committed to achieving excellence through ongoing improvement programmes and staff awareness. When the mine is closed, the open pit area will be transformed into a recreational lake, and the tailings storage facilities will be rehabilitated to become a combination of wetlands, grassed areas and ponds. Resources will be provided by the Mine to ensure the rehabilitated site remains in a safe and self-sustaining, stable condition in perpetuity. The mine is regarded as a showcase on a world standard of how a modem mining operation can successfully coexist with the nearby community.

We report 40Ar/39Ar ages for adularia and illite from veins and wall rocks at the Waihi and Favona deposits, in the Waihi district. One sample of vein adularia from the Favona deposit yielded a plateau age of 6.04 ¦ 0.06 (la) Ma, and two samples of vein adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.17 ¦ 0.03 and 6.17 ¦ 0.09 Ma. Two samples of wall rock adularia from the Waihi deposit yielded plateau ages of 6.07 ¦ 0.06 and 6.08 ¦ 0.03 Ma. Adularia ages overlap at the 2s level, and we do not consider them to be significantly different. Two samples of illite from wall rocks at Favona have total gas ages of 5.66 ¦ 0.04 and 5.65 ¦ 0.04 Ma, and retention ages of 6.57 ¦ 0.04 and 6.61 ¦ 0.04 Ma, whereas one sample of vein illite yielded a total gas age of 5.29 ¦ 0.17 Ma, and a retention age of 6.26 ¦ 0.19 Ma. The total gas ages of illite are minimum ages that are equivalent to conventional K/Ar analyses, whereas retention ages of illite are maximum ages. Although interpretation of the illite data is complicated, the adularia results strongly suggest that the Waihi and Favona deposits formed contemporaneously in the same fossil geothermal system at 6.0 to 6.1 Ma.

Gold mining is a major contributor to the South African economy, but is associated with several environmental issues such as acid rock drainage (ARD). ARD is due to the oxidation of sulfides in gold tailings and is characterised by low pH, high sulfate content and elevated concentrations of heavy metals that contaminates scarce water resources and subsequently limits the use of such waters without treatment. Treatment strategies can only be implemented if the acid-generating potential of mine wastes is effectively predicted using common static and kinetic acid prediction tests. The choice of test performed is usually a trade-off between the number of samples, speed of the test, cost of the analysis and level of information obtained. Often the results of these various tests are not consistent with one another. This study uses mineralogy to analyse biokinetic test results of a Witwatersrand gold sample in order to improve the understanding of behaviour of mine wastes under different ARD prediction test conditions.All ARD prediction testing methods investigated in this study showed that the gold sample is considered to be potentially acid forming with net acid generation (NAG) pH of 2.5 and net acid producing potential (NAPP) of 36 kg H2SO4/t. Results of biokinetic test showed that ANC was consumed within four days confirming acid producing potential of the sample with low neutralising potential as observed from acid base accounting (ABA) (4.7 kg H2SO4/t) and mineralogy (4.9 kg H2SO4/t). Results generated in this study demonstrated importance of mineralogy in both understanding the controlling reaction mechanisms playing key role in ARD formation and its capability as a prediction technique. Steelmaking slags are usually used as roadbed and civil engineering materials. However, the expansion phenomenon, which is caused by the volume expansion during hydration of free CaO and free MgO contained in steelmaking slag, is indispensable. Since the hydration of free MgO in steelmaking slag is much slower than that of free CaO, it is qualitatively considered that free MgO contributes to the hydration expansion of steelmaking slag over a long period of time. Similar to free CaO, free MgO consists of undissolved MgO and crystallised MgO in steelmaking slag. The latter precipitates during slag cooling. When divalent metal oxides (FeO, MnO, CaO) are dissolved in the crystallised MgO to form a MgO-based solid solution, it is expected to inhibit the hydration reaction similar to precipitated CaO. From the previous hydration test of Magnesioferrite, which was calcined after mixing MgO and Fe2O3 reagents, it was found that the higher the Fe2O3 concentration, the slower the hydration reaction progressed. In this study, by clarifying the influence of calcination conditions of MgO-FeO and MgO-FeO-MnO solid solutions, which were prepared by the calcination of mixture of MgO, FeO and MnO reagents, on their hydration reactivity, the effect of composition and thermal treatment on the formation of free MgO that is not hydrated (or easily hydrated) were discussed. To investigate the influence of MgO grain size, coarse MgO particles, which were obtained by crushing MgO crucible, were also used for heat treatment. With increasing the amount of FeO and MnO in the MgO-FeO-MnO solid solution, the hydration reaction became more suppressed. The expansion suppression effect was higher with solid-solved FeO than with solidsolved MnO. When the calcination temperature of the MgO-FeO solid solution was increased, the Fe3+/Fe2+ concentration ratio increased, resulting in a higher hydration rate.

Since the 1950's drilling has been rapidly mechanised. First from hand held drills with air legs to pneumatic jumbos, then to more effective hydraulic jumbos. Development of underground drilling equipment naturally could not have stopped here. Hydraulic drilling saw an improvement in drilling capacity and efficiency after the introduction of second generation drifters in the early 1980's. Also in the early 1980's a few equipment suppliers started to study how to improve the efficiency in operating the rigs. The first computerised rigs for tunnelling were delivered to work sites in mid 1980's. At the same time a few computerised longhole drills started drilling in mines.

In this paper is given a description of the flotation plant recently erected by Broken Hill South Limited at the South Mine, Broken Hill, N.S.W. It has been built on the site of the old flotation plant, which was described in a previous paper published by the author. The present paper is supplementary to the former paper in that it replaced the following sections thereof, namely, those from end of the second paragraph, page 269, to the end of the first paragraph page 282, and from the end of the second paragraph, page 284, to the end of the third paragraph, page 302.The roll crushing, fine grinding, gravity concentration, filtration, disposal of products and sampling in the new plant are the same as described in the above mentioned paper.The reconstruction of the flotation section, described herein, completes the reconstruction and modernisation of the treatment plant which was begun in 1928. A description of these earlier alterations has already been published in the Proceedings of this Institute.

In the UK during the 1990s the energy companies had developed a policy of æDash for GasÆ, building large natural gas power stations to produce more than 30 per cent of the UKÆs electricity demand. The price of imported thermal coal was dropping and the electricity generators were putting pressure on the UK coal producers to produce coal at a reduced cost. Imported coal from Columbia, South Africa, America and Australasia had increased their market share in thermal coal sales to over 50 per cent of a 55 Mtpa market. The pressure on the UK coal industry to reduce costs and improve productivity levels from an ever decreasing resource was high. Companies were benchmarking their operations on the imported coal producers and had to realign their organisations, productivity levels and costs to world best practice, not just technically, but in world class organisational management techniques.

At its Port Kembla Plant, Australian Fertilizers Ltd. manufactures Superphosphate and other Phosphatic Fertilizers.Phosphate Rock is received from Nauru and Ocean Island. It contains water insoluble tri-calcium phosphate, Ca3(PO4), to an average of about 86%.It is crushed to pass a 20-mesh x 26-gauge woven wire screen, and is then treated with Sulphuric Acid to give the product Superphosphate with a water solubie prosphate content of 20.5%, estimated as P205. Sulphuric Acid is made by the chamber process. Three sets of chambers are installed, on,e five-chamber set of timber frame work construction and the other two of more recent date, each with four chambers of steel frame work construction. A fourth chamber set is now being built.Sulphuric Acid is delivered for use. at about 70% H2S04, the strength depending upon the rock used.Mixing - The crushed rock and sulphuric acid are mixed in weighed and measured proportions respectiyely in one-ton batches in revolving cast fron pans, mechanically stirred. The mixture, while still slurry, is run into a closed horizontal concrete cylinder (den) where, with the completion of the chemical reaction, it rapidly sets as Superphosphate.Approximately fifty batches are required to fill a den. When full, the den is opened ana the mass cut out by a revolving cutter. The product is elevated and conveyed to any required position in the Superphosphate storage shed, where it dries and matures.Despatch - As required, the Superphosphate is excavated by a two ton grab and conveyed from the matured "dump" to bagging units where it is disintegrated, screened and bagged at twelve bags to the ton. The filled !Jags are closed by machine and delivered to railway trucks immediately.Mixed Fertilizers - Sulphate of Ammonia, Sulphate and Muriate, of Potash, and Blood and Bone are mixed with Superphosphate and thoroughly incorporated to give different mixtures to meet special plant requirements.

Large-scale coal mining in South Wales dates back to the late 18th and early 19th centuries with the birth of ironmaking on an industrial scale. This rapidly gave rise to new and large communities with immigration from far and wide across the United Kingdom (UK). These new communities were largely dependent on coal mining and served as the main form of employment and social cohesion until the industry’s demise in the 1990s. With wholesale mine closure and the concomitant loss of employment, the extensive environmental degradation and chronic mine-related illness left a deep scar on the psyche on many still living in the South Wales mining communities. This coupled with memories of strife in the 1980s has resulted in ongoing hostility toward the surface coal mining of the remaining accessible coal reserves in the proximity of these communities.The purpose of this paper is to set out the historical basis of the concerns of these legacy mining communities in South Wales and explain how they are being positively addressed by both the recently evolved planning and regulation system and by today’s surface mining industry. Reference is made to experience gained from two recent applications for surface coal mining adjacent to former mining communities. Ways are suggested in the approval process that surface mining can work in more harmony with the local communities through working partnerships between the mining company, the authorities and regulators and the affected communities. It is concluded that partnership is key to creating a more responsive mine-operating culture and a means to securing approval for future surface coal-mining prospects in South Wales, and probably elsewhere too.CITATION:Humphries, R N and Thompson, R J K, 2014. The central Nanling region in South China experienced multistage granite intrusive events and corresponding metallogenic processes during the Early Yanshanian period (190–140 Ma). In this study, a wide variety of published data on age determination, petrological characteristics, major and trace elements compositions, whole rock Sr–Nd contents and zircon Hf isotopic composition of the representative granite composites were systematically collected to estimate their cooling-uplift rates, granite evolution processes and mineral deposit formation. These granites have been classified into two groups based on their age and geochemical variations: Group 1 (180–165 Ma) and Group 2 (165–150 Ma). Major and trace element geochemistry suggests that Group 2 experienced more intense magmatic evolution and differentiation than Group 1. In addition, Group 1 granitoids are classified as A1-type alkaline rocks with faster cooling and uplift rates, whereas Group 2 granites are considered as A2-type aluminous rocks with slower cooling and ascent rates. Furthermore, the Group 1 granitoids have younger Nd and Hf two-stage model ages but higher eNd(t) and eHf(t) values, indicating influence from crust–mantle interaction. In contrast, the Group 2 granites show different values, suggesting stronger upper crustal contamination or assimilation. The slowly cooled and ascended Group 2 granites experienced much heavier crustal contamination (or assimilation) and crystal fractionation, contributing to the large W–Sn mineralisation in the central Nanling region. The Early Mesoproterozoic (1.6–1.4 Ga) crustal basement of the Cathaysia Block in South China is the ore source bed for the world-famous Nanling W–Sn polymetallic mineralisation.CITATION:Li, H, 2015. High-water rapid-solidifying material, called æhigh-water materialÆ, is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of backfill body, environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

Iron ore in Australia is predicted to increase in its phosphorus content in the near future, which is detrimental to properties of steel product. Steelmakers are concerned by the content of phosphorus in iron ore will exceed limits for steelmaking and increase the converter slag ratio to molten steel, which will finally lead to a decline in competitiveness in high-grade steel production. In this paper, fundamental development of a dephosphorisation technique by reduction gasification is considered. Basic reduction examination was carried out using Australian and a synthetic model iron ore sample with phosphorus compound reagent, varying reaction time and composition of substances to find out suitable process condition for dephosphorisation. With successful lowering of phosphorus concentrations by gasification reduction of the iron ores, dephosphorisation was assumed and further elucidation works were carried out. More than 10 mass per cent of dephosphorisation ratio is obtained from Australian iron ore through batch-type 25 g furnace experiment using hydrogen as a part of reducible mixed gas. Lowering of phosphorus content occurred preferentially either in wustite or in another reducing zones, suggesting a relationship between reducing conditions to efficient dephosphorisation of iron ores. Another result of the fundamental experiment using a model sample with reagent is different dephosphorisation occurred with different reagents contributing to with unified reduction model for phosphorus, providing positive possibility for comparative evaluation, even if new morphologies of phosphorus in iron ore are clarified in future. According to these approaches, it is important to reduce iron ore efficiently and to avoid gasified phosphorus retaining and reattaching to adjacent iron ore particle at the same time. A kiln-type furnace is suggested to overcome previous technical issue, and additional experiments using larger rotating furnace were carried out for verification.

Metallurgists operating Knelson Concentrators (KC) often rely on manufacturerÆs recommendations for selecting operating parameters, such as fluidising water flow rate and cycle time. Recent studies have shown that these parameters are not only dependent on the machine parameters but also on the feed characteristics, such as size distribution of the gold and gangue particles and the composition of its constituent minerals. It is known that a particle entering a KC initially traverses a circular path within the bowl. For a particle to maintain a given orbit, the required centripetal force must be supplied by external means. It has been argued that this centripetal force, which is dependent on the mass of the particle, its radial position and the rotational speed of the bowl, is provided by the fluid drag force created by inwardly moving fluidising water and the BagnoldÆs force created by the particle/particle collisions. Depending on the fluidising water flow rate, one of two situations can occur where the porosity of the bed increases or decreases, which influences the amount of material retained within the bowl. The amount of material of a given size and density retained in the bowl is thus dependent on the extent of the centripetal force provided. Based on the above concept, a criterion that can be used to predict the amount of material recovered in the bowl has been derived and validated by experimental data. It may also be construed that this criterion demarcates the transition of the bed from a packed-bed state to a fluidised state. By identifying the transition values for the different constituent mineral particles in the feed, it is possible to estimate the optimal fluidising water flow rate that would maximise gold recovery while minimising gangue recovery. In addition, the kinetics of gangue displacement by incoming heavy mineral particles were also studied using synthetic mineral mixtures. The experimental data suggests that this process follows first order kinetics and that the build-up of heavy mineral reaches a maximum. A model has been proposed to predict the optimal batch cycle time for a KC in terms of the feed characteristics and machine operating parameters.

In this paper a quantitative deterministic risk modelling approach (Quadrim) is introduced. The mathematical framework and equations for quantifying uncertainty within and aggregating across value chain nodes from error propagation techniques is proposed and discussed. A case study and worked examples, based on a hypothetical mine are then presented. This illustrates how uncertainty from the mining and economic value chains can be handled in a typical net cash flow calculation, and how this can be translated to a risk model. It is then illustrated that current valuation techniques do not just result in an information gap for decision makers. Traditional approaches such as discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis and truck and shovel productivity analysis, which do not take into account uncertainty in input values, can result in potential bias in estimates such as net present value (NPV) or equipment hours

The Effect of Bulk Iron Concentration on the Copper Activation of Sphalerite at pH 9

Cu-Ag-Au mineralisation at Kluwih prospect in Eastern Java, Indonesia is related to a high-sulfidation hydrothermal system within a volcanic dome (2.35 × 1.7 km diameter). The mineralisation occurs mainly in steeply dipping, structurally-controlled quartz-enargite-pyrite veins (several centimetres to 2 m wide) and is hosted mainly in porphyritic dacite, volcaniclastic rocks and volcanic breccia of the dome and in an underlying andesite that yielded a zircon U-Pb age of 11.5 Ma.Short wave infrared spectrometer analyses were carried out for alteration mapping at Kluwih. There are two main stages of alteration produced by the hydrothermal activity. The alteration mineral assemblages indicate an advanced argillic alteration. The Cu mineralisation occurred in the form of enargite and subordinate chalcopyrite with an intergrown texture in the early stage. These mineralised veins are characterised by narrow pyrophyllite ± diaspore and dickite selvages (metres wide) and a peripheral K-muscovite envelope (sericitic alteration) up to 100 m wide. The K-muscovite envelope is zoned outward to Na-muscovite or Na-illite. Late-stage kaolinite and smectite alteration overprints the porphyritic dacite and may obscure the nature of early mica-clay alteration. The spatial distribution of different alteration assemblages suggests that the temperature of hydrothermal fluid increases with depth.Both the high-sulfidation mineralisation and advanced argillic alteration are suggested to be related to magmatic-hydrothermal fluids, which are likely to originate from an undiscovered deeper porphyry Cu-Au system below the porphyritic dacite. Based on alteration mapping results and comparisons to similar deposits, the porphyry intrusion could be up to 500 m below the volcanic dome. Further geochemical and mineralogical studies may help to target the potential underlying porphyry system.CITATION:Chan, J S-L, 2015. The sequences in alteration and mineralisation from five copper-gold porphyry systems (Taysan and Didipio, Philippines; Horse-Ivaal and Wafi River, PNG; and Goonumbla, Australia) and one gold-copper skarn system (Browns Creek, Australia) are documented in this paper. Alteration and mineralisation in all these systems reflect a common evolution from crystallisation of melts emplaced at shallow crustal levels (zoned potassic -> propylitic alteration), followed by exsolution of volatile-rich fluids from these melts (porphyry quartz ¦K-feldspar/biotite veins and local high temperature advanced argillic alteration), to a progressive cooling of the intrusion which results in associated retrograde alteration. Copper-gold mineralisation in all cases is almost exclusively restricted to the cooler retrograde events. The recognition of the temporal and spatial zonations in alteration and mineralisation in gold-copper porphyry systems has significant relevance in the interpretation of geophysical signatures, overprinting alteration, vein sequences and structural controls, and can lead to more focused and potentially more cost-effective exploration.
