This paper discusses the determination of the percentage of crystalline material in a natural silica deposit which would be considered harmful to health (<10 ¦m). A sample of the natural silica material was recovered and split into a number of subsamples. Samples were sieved using a conventional dry sieve to remove material >300 ¦m before testing. Particle size analyses of the fine fraction showed 75 per cent of the material was below 10 ¦m. Initially XRD and XPS were run on the samples to determine the minerals and composition of the sample. The XRD revealed strong quartz peaks and smaller tridymite peaks with a high amorphous background. The XPS indicated traces of iron, titanium and carbon with dominant silicon and oxygen peaks. The structure of the sample was investigated using the SEM. It was apparent that there were a number of larger quartz crystals (>30 ¦m) with a mix of amorphous and crystalline in the finer fraction. It was also observed that amorphous material was attached to the surface of the crystals. In order to determine the percentage of crystalline quartz a known amount of quartz was added to the sample incrementally. On each addition an XRD scan was performed and the area under the peaks recorded. Back analysis of these peaks with an assumed percentage of crystalline material in the original sample gave a crystalline content of 30 per cent. The quantity at the respirable fraction was estimated to be 18.7 per cent.

Thermodynamics of Non-Cyanide Gold Solvents The present status of the raw material base in the gold industry requires specific ways to recover gold and silver from ores. Most gold is closely associated with sulfides which require flotation followed by pressure or bacterial oxidation. The next stages of processing usually require using expensive operations for the preparation of leaching. A lot of researchers want to find a new alternative solvent for the extraction of precious metals from these products. According to the authors, one of the best ways is to use sulfur-based solvents (thiosulfate, sulfite, and their various mixtures). Thermodynamics of gold and silver thiosulfate dilution are calculated for conditions: the concentration of Au - 200 mg/L, oxygen - 3.2 mg/L, thiosulfate - 79 mg/L, OH- - 170 mg/L. the general result is the possibility of process remains under standard conditions. (erAu = = 0.035 V, ?G298 = - 29.18 kJ/g-atom ??). Silver with thiosulfate forms two strong complexes: [AgS203]- and [Ag(S203)2]3-. ?G0 = -1027 kJ/mol. The complex [AgS203]- is less stable: ?G0 = 486 kJ/mol. It should be noted that despite the high stability of gold complexes, the sodium thiosulfate may decompose to sulfite and elemental sulfur during the process, especially when heating. Gold is slightly soluble in the sodium sulfite solution, however it forms the strong complex [Au(SO3)2]3-. Depending on the concentration of free S2O32-ions, silver with sodium sulfite forms three complexes: [AgSO3]-, [Ag(SO3)2]3- and [Ag(SO3)3]5-. The dissolution speed of gold in sodium sulfite solution may be in the same range as it is during cyanidation. In this case, a practical application of sulfite process can be also used, especially for the products containing free elemental sulfur. In conclusion, sulfite-thiosulfate gold lixiviants can be used for concentrates after pressure oxidation of the cakes.

This paper examines the recent trend towards sustainability reporting and the application of the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) æSustainability Reporting GuidelinesÆ. It also reviews reporting in the context of the Australian Minerals Industry Code for Environmental Management, as well as the status of public sustainability reporting globally in the minerals industry. The public reporting of environmental, health and safety, social/community and economic performance has evolved over the past two decades. Initially, separate and to some degree disparate documents were produced to report performance in each distinct area. In the early to mid 1980Æs some organisations had begun to report their environmental performance through some minor commentary in their annual financial reports or through ætokenisticÆ leaflets, often used as public relations exercises. Due to more media coverage and an elevated level of public scrutiny, organisations are no longer merely reporting their good performance, but also their bad and indifferent performance. In recent years these once separate environment, health and safety and community public reports have further evolved to become more integrated, reflecting organisations embarking on the reporting of their progress towards sustainable development. The primary factor in driving the evolution of sustainability reporting has been the increasing influence of stakeholders. Two groups of external stakeholders that have had a significant influence over public sustainability reporting in recent years have been non government organisations (NGOs) and socially responsible investment funds. Significant expenditure is involved in the preparation and publication of a sustainability report however many organisations do not appear to have examined in detail what they are really trying to achieve from their public reporting process. It is important to establish objectives for the public reporting process to achieve maximum benefits. Without a framework of public reporting objectives, the benefits of the reporting process to the organisation will not be recognised and the considerable expenditure involved will be increasingly difficult to justify. We believe that by focussing on the process rather than the document, significant benefits to the organisation can be gained. Indeed, with a proper framework of objectives and targets, the reporting process can be used as a vehicle to drive organisational change, implement management systems and improve performance. An idealised framework for a public sustainability reporting process sees the organisationÆs sustainability policies drive the entire process and determine the sustainability objectives. Specific targets are then set to realise those objectives. The targets will govern performance indicators that should be used to measure the success of target achievement and which will also define what data need to be collected. Evaluation is a key component of the reporting process to measure the success of target achievement and progress in realising objectives, as well as review the need for new targets to be set. The actual production of a public document is only one, albeit important, component of the overall reporting process. The challenges that lie ahead for sustainability reporting primarily relate to the integration of environmental, social and economic performance reporting as organisations integrate their approach to these areas. This will only happen as the culture of an organisation changes to not only accept the principles of sustainable development but to implement those principles in daily operations. The reporting process has the potential to drive that cultural change by communicating the organisationÆs sustainability objectives and setting challenging targets for their realisation. Public sustainability reporting will only achieve its maximum value when it forms an integral part of an organisationÆs sustainability management system and culture.

There is significant value at stake in the mining industry from the implementation of new technologies that support the enhanced profitability and sustainability of mines. However, in order to realise this value, new technology must be implemented in a way that is both effective and sustainable. The industry has a mixed history for technology implementation that provides fertile ground for understanding what is necessary for innovation to deliver value. This paper describes early stage research investigating why this is so, with the aim of improving how to deliver value. Several case studies are provided covering both successful and unsuccessful technology interventions. The chemistry of cyanide solutions is complex, this complexity being responsible for the ability to act as complex-forming agents in metal dissolution processes, among them gold and silver. Such ionic species are used in hydrometallurgical processes, in particular in gold extraction and electro-plating. Due to the high toxicity of cyanide, the discard of effluent from processes and/or industries demands rigorous treatment so as to minimise its concentration. Among the conventional chemical treatment of such effluents one can mention SO2/air; biological degradation; oxidation by using hydrogen peroxide; oxidation by sodium hypochlorite, etc. However, the electrolytic recycling process is also promising for cyanide recovery and offers the possibility of recycling it to the aforementioned industrial processes. Such a process does not use additional chemicals but enables direct re-utilisation to the main process aiming at adjusting the cyanide concentration.

The ability to design a beneficiation process for a new orebody based on particular feed characteristics is a powerful and practical tool. A new technique has been developed where beneficiation outcomes can be calculated by combining feed size-by-size chemical analysis, mineralogy, liberation and particle characteristics with a series of simple theoretical unit separation models rather than a simple mass balance approach or an exhaustive beneficiation test program. The new technique provides the ability to rapidly identify ore types that have the potential to meet product specifications whilst also rejecting others that will not meet specification even if a perfect separation was achieved. Beyond the broad scale decision making process, practical mineral separation curves from actual plant data can be used to more closely simulate the proposed process. This approach reduces the amount of laboratory and pilot plant work necessary by targeting what process stages will be required, increases early rejection of uneconomic options, identifies problematic ore types or unit operations and is a step towards estimation of final grade and recoveries achievable in potential circuit configurations.

PT Freeport Indonesia’s Deep Ore Zone (DOZ) is a block cave mining operation that has been in production for 15 years. DOZ is located approximately 900 m below surface and has an average production rate of more than 5000 t/d. The footprint of the extraction level will ultimately be 900 m long and average more than 200 m wide. The undercut level is located 20 m above the extraction level.While developing Panel 1K on the northern portion of the extraction level, a major geotechnical problem was encountered when there was a change in lithology and an associated fault intersection. A large collapse of the hanging wall of the extraction level drifts occurred in the area of the fault intersection between February and March 2011. This was followed by a collapse of one of the undercut level drifts directly above the extraction level in May 2011.It was suggested that the best approach to mitigate risk during rehabilitation was to systematically open up the failed area under the protection of a steel set support system. To achieve this, approximately 60 t of grout was injected from the undercut level to fill the voids created when the rock mass between the two levels failed. A ground penetrating radar system was used to survey the condition of the rock mass between the two levels before and after the injection of grout. After the grout injection phase was completed to a satisfactory level of confidence, rehabilitation activities started on the extraction level by taking out the now consolidated material from inside the drift in 2 m advances from under steel sets initially constructed in secured ground.Controlled blasting was the key aspect to the success of the initiative to open up just enough of the drift to systematically support the rock mass before the next set was installed. The systematic support consisted of in-cycle shotcrete sprayed over mesh pinned to the exposed rock, as effectively as possible, with splitsets before spiling the next advance’s protection canopy with rebar. Once secure, a combination of steel set and pumped concrete was installed as the final support. International regulations exist to manage the concentrations of mycotoxins such as Ochratoxin A (OTA) and deoxynivalenol (DON) in grains and prevent health risks from excessive exposure to OTA and DON. Since the permitted levels of these mycotoxins are very low (existing maximum levels are in the range of 5 ppb for OTA and 1–2 ppm for DON), sampling for these mycotoxins is potentially challenging. Given that the distribution of infected kernels in a consignment of wheat can be highly heterogeneous, detection by current sampling methods is subject to a high variance. Furthermore, the concentrations of mycotoxins in individual kernels vary over orders of magnitude, intensifying the heterogeneity of the bulk grain.In these circumstances, there is much interest in developing sampling plans that inform regulatory agencies, and mitigate the risk of misclassifying grain shipments as compliant or non-compliant within the global grain trade, when correctly implemented.Experimental data from laboratory and field studies describing individual wheat kernel concentrations of OTA and DON were combined with experimental data describing the variance due to the analytical methods used for OTA and DON to calculate the sampling distribution for wheat having various levels of contamination. This work has focused on quantifying the heterogeneity of samples at the point of submission for analysis and within subsequent sample preparation to arrive at total sampling distributions that include uncertainties due to the intrinsic heterogeneity and the analytical uncertainties. The Small Pebble Process for Reducing Ball and Power Consumption in Secondary Grinding Ball mills are used widely for secondary grinding. A mixture of ball sizes can be used to optimise grinding efficiency, but the use of balls smaller than about 30 mm in diameter is not normally viable, particularly when alloy steel is required. Preliminary testing of the grinding efficiency of various combinations of 40 mm steel balls and crushed stone in the size range 7 to 25 mm was carried out in a 300 mm diameter mill, which has accurate power measurement.The primary interest was to assess the potential benefit of adding small pebbles (from a primary circuit crusher or mill) to a secondary ball mill, to reduce ball consumption and to improve grinding efficiency. The optimum proportion of pebbles was found to be about 25 per cent by volume. This mixture produced about the same amount of fines as balls alone, but with lower power consumption, due to the lower density of the pebbles. The net result was a 12 per cent saving in power and a 25 per cent saving in ball consumption. The production of fines was partly due to pebble wear. The use of portions of 15 mm balls, (ceramic and steel), was also tested for comparison. A few batch pilot-scale tests were conducted in a 1.2 m diameter, 0.31 m long mill to test the viability of the pebbles at a larger scale. The pilot-scale tests confirmed the reduction in power and that the rate of production of fines was the same as that obtained with balls. The same residence time was used and this implies that pebbles can be added to an existing full-scale ball mill, with no loss in capacity. Samples of secondary mill feed and pebbles were obtained from a copper mine and the steady-state consumption of pebbles was determined by locked-cycle laboratory-scale tests. These tests demonstrated that mill power could be reduced by up 13 per cent and that the consumption of 40 mm balls could be reduced by up to 38 per cent, while maintaining the same throughput and product size. The rate of pebble addition was about 4 per cent of the primary circuit feed rate. Application has been made for patent protection.

As one of the four basic sciences, the study of geology is intrinsically worthy as a means of increasing fundamental knowledge of the behaviour and evolution of the universe. Geological knowledge can also be translated into practical outcomes for society such as resource discovery and protection of the environment. Australia has a long tradition of providing very high quality geoscience programs to prepare graduates for a range of occupations. We are, however, reaching a nexus in the way universities should or can deliver engaging programs. This has been triggered by the rapid evolution of the digital world (the Internet of Things), new technologies, unprecedented access to information, better understanding of the processes by which we learn and adapt our thinking, growing complexity in the problems we must face or opportunities to grasp, and university funding models. Designing education programs for the next generation of geologists extends far beyond tinkering with syllabuses. We must develop skills sets that will allow graduates to work in rapidly changing landscapes, but in doing so may have to sacrifice content to build capability in our graduates. Whereas universities must respond to changing demands on graduates by ensuring degree programs contain an appropriate balance of material and high quality of delivery, industry and government must also fulfil their responsibilities to provide additional training programs for graduates to assist their rapid transition into independent professionals. This paper examines various educational issues being considered in developing the new Decadal Plan for the Earth Sciences, and reflects on directions that education is heading in many of our universities.CITATION:Cohen, D R, 2017. Disasters are often tragic outcomes of high-risk technologies such as mines. In Australia, more mines are being developed every day, and the risk of disasters is ever increasing. No matter how effective our conventional safety devices are, there is a form of accident that is inevitable. These relate to accidents that result from æinteracting failuresÆ in a way that could not be foreseen by the designers. In so-called ætightly coupled production systemsÆ (processes that happen very fast, such as on a high producing mine) the risk is even higher and our risk controls mostly introduce some sort of a technological fix. While we are at the one hand attempting to control the risk, we are also introducing another level of complexity. Are we really controlling the risk? This is one of the fundamental questions that will be addressed in this paper: Do we have the ability within the mining industry and other industries to effectively prevent these catastrophes, or are we, on the contrary, faced with an increasing risk as a result of increasing complexities of our technology, management systems and practices. This paper will contend that perceived improvement in risk control is an illusion of activity, and that the likelihood of mining catastrophes may be exponentially increasing. Although the paper focuses on the mining sector many aspects may be applicable across a range of industries. This paper will further contend that we are applying the right solutions to the wrong problems. Our focus is technological and procedural, while our problem is one of production cultures ripe for error and failure.

Risk and dispute resolution are linked. Dispute resolution techniques are brought to bear on a dispute - which is an outcome of a risk being wholly or partially realised. There has been an increasing awareness by business of risk as a component of doing business. There is an accompanying awareness of the need to manage risk - including legal risk. Many companies have undertaken a systematic review of their potential risks and endeavoured to put in place systems to help to avoid or manage risks. A legal risk management program will not prevent disputes arising. However, such a program should prescribe how that dispute will be managed. The management of the dispute will involve consideration of the dispute resolution procedure to be adopted. The most appropriate processes will take into account the practical, personal and commercial considerations surrounding the dispute and be as efficient, cost-effective and user friendly as achievable in the circumstances for the benefit of all the parties. Carrying on business in South East Asia, whether as an explorer or a mining operator, brings additional considerations to bear in legal risk management and the dispute resolution process. A significantly different perspective is required due to the varying nature of the legal systems in many South East Asian jurisdictions. These jurisdictions often have relative uncertainty as to the law. This impacts on the dispute resolution processes and also raises further timing and cost issues. The authors contend that this is all the more reason to endeavour, as practically as possible, to adopt a legal risk management and dispute resolution profile which will provide business with the greatest prospects of maintaining control of the dispute resolution process. This presents a greater chance of a successful outcome to the dispute. In these times of increasing pressures on profitability because of low mineral prices, all costs of a minerals business are being reviewed. In such times, a significant legal dispute may have even greater potential to adversely impact on the companies concerned, together with the careers of the people involved. In this paper possible approaches to managing disputes and a case study a legal dispute in which Freehill Hollingdale and Page were involved are discussed. The dispute concerned an international mining company developing a gold mine in Indonesia and one of its contractors in Indonesia. Described is how that dispute was resolved. This achieved a very satisfactory result for the client - all things considered. Given the æadditionalÆ problems associated with ascertainment and enforcement of ærightsÆ in South East Asia, the longer the parties can retain control over their dispute the better off they will be. For this reason, the authors set out in this paper the main additional dispute resolution tools available - that are appropriate for use throughout South East Asia.

Whether you are an employee, contractor or consultant working in the mineral industry, there are pressures to deliver the best possible performance. Technical professionals are usually driven by an internal desire to perform to a high standard because of personal pride in their profession, but there are an increasing number of external requirements to demonstrate that the actions taken were based upon reasonable grounds and that the work conformed to current best practice. People expect these best practice procedures to be followed and governments are now requiring those tendering for contracts to be registered in some way and to be participants in quality assurance schemes. One is not immune to these pressures just because you are working in a less legislatively sophisticated developing country in the circum-Pacific rim (pacrim) region.   Among the external pressures are the general ethical requirements of the professional body to which the person usually belongs, e.g. The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (AusIMM), which are further elaborated upon in various Codes and Guidelines on specific matters, e.g. JORC (ore reserves reports) and VALMIN (assessment and valuation reports). These are outlined and discussed. Also, AusIMM's Chartered Practicing Status (CPS) Proposal is outlined in the context of other Pacrim countries approach to registering of technical professionals, which is a way of ensuring that minimum standards of qualifications, experience, competence and repute are demonstrable to ones employer (or client), peers and the wider community, including government.   Today, in the external working scene, there are many laws (particularly those applicable to the corporate and environmental spheres), with which contractors/consultants and even employees must fully comply, or else face criminal sanctions involving huge fines and imprisonment. These, too, are outlined and discussed. One must be able to mount a due diligence defence to avoid or mitigate these consequences.   Personal liability in the context of the day-to-day performance of one's duties has thus become a major concern to the technical professional and the ways in which it can be ameliorated, or insured against, are described. However, for some mineral industry practitioners, the problem is exacerbated because. of their general ignorance of the extent of their personal liability exposure. This paper intends to address this ignorance and to heighten general awareness of personal liability issues, as well as proposing some simple ways to limit this liability.

A key environmental management issue associated with mining projects is tailing disposal. In high rainfall environments this is particularly challenging and generally requires the discharge of excess water from a tailing dam to adjacent streams or coastal waters. Such discharges can potentially have adverse impacts on downstream water quality and the environmental values associated with these waters, such as providing a drinking water supply for local villagers, maintaining a fisheries resource or protecting a fish species of high conservation significance. An alternative to the construction and operation of a conventional tailing dam is Deep Sea Tailing Placement (DSTP). The key features of such a system are:Discharge of the tailing slurry at considerable depth (approximately 120 - 150 m) below the oceanÆs surface. This requires a pipeline to be laid from the process plant to a mix tank, where the tailing is mixed with seawater and entrained air released. The pipeline then continues down the ocean floor to the required discharge depth, which is below the surface mixed layer and the euphotic zone. After discharge, formation of a density current which continues to descend along the ocean floor as long as the slope is sufficiently steep. Final deposition of the tailing in an area where the slope of the ocean floor is insufficient to maintain the density current. This typically occurs at depths of more than 800 m. Water quality issues associated with DSTP include: Impacts on the oceanic water column due to the formation of subsurface plumes which break away from the descending density current. The occurrence of elevated concentrations of contaminants in the interstitial waters of the deposited tailing solids. Fluxes of contaminants from the tailing deposits into the overlying oceanic water column. This paper discusses the water quality aspects of DSTP with particular reference to a case study in Papua New Guinea. The evaluations undertaken as part of the DSTP impact assessment included consideration of both the short- and long-term chemical behaviour of contaminants and bioassays, within the appropriate water quality assessment framework.

The Ekati Diamond Mine is located on permafrost terrain in CanadaÆs Northwest Territories. The mine rock consists of: diamond-bearing and barren kimberlite; and surrounding waste rock such as granite. The kimberlite occurs in several vertical æpipesÆ that are, or will be, mined using open pits. Early predictions of drainage chemistry at Ekati identified the potential for ARD due to sulfide oxidation from both waste rock and kimberlite. This was surprising for the kimberlite, because neutralisation potentials (NP) are typically hundreds of kg CaCO3 equivalent/t. However, subsequent testwork showed that substantial portions of the NP ædisappearedÆ quickly, apparently due to the unusual non-carbonate mineralogy. In any case, additional predictive work concluded much of the rock was benign and there would be no ARD. Shortly after mining started, ARD appeared from both the waste rock and kimberlite, although a few years passed before the company and its consultants recognised that at least some of the acidic water was ARD. Numerous other processes have been put forward as possible explanations for the remaining acidic drainage, although none have been either confirmed or eliminated. Because: the causes of the ARD and acidity are not known; no causes have been eliminated and more have been added; drainage chemistry was not predicted accurately; and future mining will encounter similar rock. I believe the Ekati Diamond Mine needs high-level assistance to understand current chemistry and to avoid problems with future drainage. Organisations like INAP, MEND3, and universities could provide this assistance.

A study was carried out to compare the environmental impacts of a number of process routes for lead and zinc metal production from sulphide ores using Life Cycle Assessment methodology and based on average industry data derived from the literature. The processes investigated were:blast furnace production of lead; Imperial Smelting Process for lead and zinc production; and electrowinning of zinc with the mining and mineral processing stages common to all three routes. The effect of a number of process variables, namely ore grade, fuel source for electricity generation and efficiency of generation, on the environmental impacts was also examined. The environmental impact categories considered in the study were:total (or full cycle) energy consumption; Global Warming Potential (GWP); and Acidification Potential (AP). The results of the study show that when produced separately, zinc production is more than twice as energy intensive as lead production (viz 48 and 20 MJ/kg respectively), however when produced jointly by the Imperial Smelting process, the energy intensity of the two metals is not all that dissimilar (viz 36 and 32 MJ/kg respectively). The metal production and refining stage was found to make the greatest contribution to the overall environmental impacts for all three processes. The study also highlighted the importance of taking a life cycle approach when comparing the environmental impacts of different processes.

Although cyclones have been around in their current form since the early-1890s, there have been some exciting new developments, which have extended their efficiency/operation. These developments have taken place with both dense medium and classification cyclones. The more noteworthy developments are:Inlet designInlet design is the determining factor in classification cyclone capacity and efficiency. The recently developed ribbon inlet with patented pressure bulge has not only resulted in unbelievable increases in capacity, but also in efficiency. Sharpness of separation corresponding to an alpha value of greater than four has been achieved! Secondary offtakeOne of the factors leading to reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of coarse particles in the cyclone overflow. The secondary offtake has been developed specifically to scavenge these particles from the cyclone overflow with great success. Water injectorThe other major factor resulting in reduced cyclone efficiency is the presence of misplaced fine particles in the cyclone underflow. The water injector, which has been around for many years in various forms, can reduce this short circuit fraction by up to 50 per cent. 3-in-1 cycloneThe 3-in-1 cyclone combines the inlet design, secondary off take and water injector into a single unit resulting in the most efficient classification cyclone available in the market. The RejectorTMIron ore has a high yield to underflow and traditional dense medium cyclones have always been spigot constrained. The Rejector TM is an exciting new development whereby the spigot capacity has been increased substantially. The application of the Rejector TM will result in fewer/smaller cyclones being required for a given duty resulting in efficiency gains and reductions in both operating and maintenance costs.
