There are several long-standing rules of thumb that are often quoted in mine ventilation studies. They include airway ‘carrying velocities’ and the critical upcast air velocity range that must be avoided to prevent a water blanket forming. Quoting these rules of thumb may lend an air of legitimacy to a ventilation design, and allow the design engineer to avoid having to study a problem from first principles. But how valid are these shortcuts in today’s rapidly changing world? This paper summarises research into the genesis of several commonly quoted rules of thumb. It finds that they were very specific to the local conditions, practices and economics at the time they were developed. It also presents examples where applying these rules of thumb outside of their original context can lead to unexpected and erroneous results.CITATION:Derrington, A S, 2017. A Simulation Study on Two-Stage Grinding with High-Pressure Roller Mills By the application of high-pressure roller mill (HPRM) in the field of mineral processing, computer simulation can be used to predict overall performance of a grinding circuit based on data obtained from HPRM comminution test in pilot scale or industrial scale. Using the model developed by Klymowsky and Liu for HPRM comminution and an extended Plitt's model for classification, steady-state of a closed circuit grinding can be calculated by means of a virtual locked-cycle-test conducted on computer. This paper presents the result of a simulation study on two-stage grinding with HPRM as the comminution device. The emphasis is put on the influences of circuit-configuration and way of recirculating classifier's coarse-product on the overall circuit performance. The results show that two-stage grinding with HPRM has its merit and flexibility in meeting demands of various grinding tasks in mineral processing.

Electronic noses are being used in the processing industries and in fields such as environmental and occupational hygiene to detect a wide variety of problems from contaminated foods to toxic chemicals in soils. Recently, research has been conducted into the use of these devices for detecting spontaneous combustion in mines with the aim of producing a method for early detection of a developing heating. Gas samples were collected from both SimtarsÆ 16 m3 large-scale spontaneous combustion reactor and the University of QueenslandÆs two-metre column. The samples were analysed using an electronic nose. GCMS and HPLC were used to identify some of the components present. A number of issues both from a practical mine situation and a scientific standpoint have been identified that need to be addressed before these devices can be used to detect a developing heating. Aluminised bags routinely used in the mining industry to collect gas samples for analysis of the permanent gases are not suitable for use with electronic nose devices as they have a æfingerprintÆ from the polymer lining that interferes with the coal heating fingerprint. Tedlar bags used for environmental gas sampling are also unsuitable due to their fingerprint. Gas samples can be collected in glass gas bulbs with aluminium seals and successfully analysed. However the aluminium foil used to seal the bulbs is a restricted item in underground mines. It was also found that the volatile organic fingerprint of the coal heating was extremely weak at temperatures below 130¦C. Before a useful application can be developed, further investigation into the chemical species present in the off-gases from Australian coals is required.

An assessment is made of the potential for thick seam underground mining of black coal in Australia. A brief summary is given of the geo-mechanical environment and previous mining history existing in a number of areas of particular interest from the point of view of thick seam mining. A classification of thick seam mining methods is presented with emphasis on the critical geo-mechanical parameters influencing the performance of such methods. A summary is made of perceived geo-mechanical research requirements related to thick seam mining in Australian coalfields.

The resource industry must prepare for the inevitable shift towards automation as an operational objective. Although this may seem like a distant concern, many mining companies and equipment manufacturers are already conducting full-scale automation trials. The necessary technology is advancing at a rapid pace yet the training of people to support it at the trade level lags far behind. Those given the responsibility of installing and maintaining automated equipment in the mining environment require a unique set of skills and knowledge. These training needs demand attention to ensure that the wider uptake of automation is sustainable and achieves its full potential.   This paper documents work undertaken by CRCMining and the Mining Industry Skills Centre towards establishing a training framework seeking to address the needs of trade level personnel tasked with the support of automation equipment. A comprehensive definition of the skills and knowledge required by the hypothetical automation-specialised tradesperson is presented. The training pathway identified for these personnel is also described. This work forms part of the Mining Industry Skills Centre's Automation Skills Formation Strategy, funded by the Queensland Department of Education and Training.

Perception has the unfortunate habit of becoming reality. Urban inhabitants unfortunately do not regard mining as a legitimate or desirable business, despite its contribution to Australia's export income (+A $8,000 million, being nearly a third of all exports); share of GDP (it is 4.5%); and the fact that its presence fills up all the empty spaces northwest of the Adelaide-Melbourne-Sydney-Brisbane crescent of inhabitation. The huge economic contribution of Australia's minerals industry, resulting from providing more than half of merchandise exports (Figure 1), is achieved by employing only some 2% of the national work force (Gaulton, 1997). Unfortunately, the minerals industry's critics generally oppose exploration on the basis that what you don't know will not hurt you. It is the 'do-not-confuse-me-with-facts' philosophy or 'ostrich syndrome', which somehow crudely assumes that mining practices have stayed in the style popular circa late 1800s. Somehow ignorance really is bliss for these idealistic believers, who are reminiscent of the members of the Flat Earth Society!

The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit is located at elevations of up to 3100 metres above sea level, in the Central Highlands of Irian Jaya, Indonesia, 35 km NNW of the Grasberg porphyry deposit. Wabu is a grass-roots discovery in an area with no previous gold mining history or record of gold mineralisation. A geological resource of 117.26 million tonnes at an average grade of 2.16 g/t Au (1.0 g/t Au cut-off) has been defined to-date. Mineralisation is hosted within a skarn occurring along the southern boundaries of the Late-Miocene age monzonite-diorite Pagane intrusive complex. The intrusive complex occurs in the footwall of a major EW structure, the Derewo fault, which displays sinistral strike-slip and reverse fault movement. The Derewo fault separates Derewo metamorphic units to the north from platform sediments of the Australian craton to the south. The skarn has a strike length of 6 km and is up to 1.5 km wide. It is developed within calcareous shelf sediments of the Tertiary New Guinea limestone group and is dominated by prograde garnet development. Gold mineralisation was deposited during retrograde alteration and is directly associated with arsenophyrite and bismuth minerals. Retrograde alteration is distinguished by a sequence of clinopyroxene , magnetite, epidote and hornblende, biotite and chlorite and lastly carbonate. Gold is associated with the biotite/ chlorite phase together with sulphides and precipitated as the result of fluid mixing. The Wabu Ridge Gold Skarn deposit was identified in April 1990 during a regional program of helicopter assisted stream sediment sampling of -80 mesh (180 microns) fraction and panned concentrate sampling. The initial discovery sample site was situated 15 km down stream from the deposit and returned 1.49 ppm Au for the stream sediment sample and 138 ppm Au for the panned concentrate sample. A regional airborne helicopter magnetics survey, conducted in early-1992, helped defined the main magnetite associated skarn zone and the extent of associated igneous rocks. Detailed follow-up commenced in May 1992 and consisted of detailed mapping, soil sampling and ground magnetics prior to drilling the first hole in October 1992. Drilling to-date has delineated a contained geologic resource of 8.1 million ounces of gold and potential exists for a larger resource.

Gas sensing systems are becoming more important in many industries such as oil, gas and mining operations. Particularly in underground coalmines, accurate and reliable monitoring of toxic and combustible gases such as methane, nitrogen dioxide, carbon monoxide and hydrogen sulfide is essential. Available conventional electrochemical sensors for gas measurements in underground coalmines suffer from shortcomings such as cross-sensitivity response, limited lifetime, high calibration cost, maintenance cost and safety. Recent studies have found that fibre optic-based gas sensors have potential to eliminate these issues. These sensors can also be used for long distance and distributed sensing of various gases, both of which are important for underground gas monitoring. The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed. The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands. The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

The importance of the minerals industry to any economy is clearly demonstrable. Its raw materials and products are the foundation of modem society and they have shaped the history of mankind from prehistoric times to the space age of today. However, those in the minerals industry have clearly failed to impress this fact on the consciousness of the public, bureaucrats and politicians. They have also failed to engage their dedicated opponents in a constructive debate. This is mainly because the minerals industry has been unwilling (until recently) to deal with the "soft" issues of civil society, nor understand and operate on a more emotional level. Technical professionals (as well as managers) in the future must be as comfortable in handling community concerns over social, environmental or landowner issues, as they are with logging complex drill core, designing blast patterns and separating one mineral from another. They must become caring, effective communicators and mediators. These are the new skills of a professional in the Third Millennium. These issues are outlined and discussed with some Australian data used to illustrate the point. If there is to be a future for all, then the policy makers within all levels of government (national, regional or local) must not drive essential mineral development offshore. They must address ways to support wealth creation mechanisms, particularly innovation. The minerals industry is a powerful wealth creator for ordinary citizens and an innovator. Politicians and their advisers must not .be allowed to forget this fact. If the ANZAC minerals industries do not win the emotional debate and successfully deal with the "soft" issues as well as they deal with the technical issues, there can be only a dim future ahead.

Study on Iron Ore Sintering with High Proportion of Specularite Concentrates Specularite iron ores have poor hydrophilicity and ballability as well as bad high-temperature reactivity, which restricts the large-scale application in the sinter and pellet production. In order to make the best use of the specularite concentrates, a novel process of Composite Agglomeration Process (CAP) is applied in this research. By the CAP, the percentage of specularite concentrates in the sinter mixture is increased to no less than 40 per cent as well as the coke breeze dosage is reduced by 0.3 per cent~0.6 per cent. Moreover, all the sintering indexes are obviously improved compared with the traditional sintering process. Researches on the metallurgical performances shows the finished composite agglomerates are high-quality burdens for blast furnaces. This investigation can provide an effective route to utilize the inferior specularite concentrates in the sintering.

This contribution examines the effect of feedstock sampling before the sorting stage of polyethylene terephtalate (PET) bottle recycling. Batches of waste PET bottles may contain non-PET bottles which need to be removed by sorting. Any residual presence of PVC is detrimental for the quality of products manufactured from recycled PET. The maximum tolerated concentration of PVC in cleaned PET is extremely low, which places high demands on the recovery of PVC achieved by sorting. To be confident of attaining the desired PET quality after sorting, acceptance sampling of truckloads of PET bottles may take place prior to sorting. It is shown that accounting for sampling uncertainty requires that the sorting process achieves a consistently high recovery of PVC bottles.CITATION:Glass, H J and Dominy, S C, 2017. Comparison of Grinding and Liberation Processes for Stalky Biomass Materials as a Prerequisite for Production of Energy Pellets with High Calorific Value Pelletising biomass, especially straw and stalky materials, requires a product specific size reduction and liberation. However, moisture content plays an important role in palletising and also affects the energetic properties of the biomass. The paper illustrates the characteristics of the mentioned type of biomass and specifies the necessities for production of energy pellets. Defined requirements for biomass energy pellets will be shown based on relevant standards. The work focuses on a comparative investigation of the straw fibres after grinding with hammer/impact mill and after the liberation of the straw fibres with twin-screw extruder (two different communition units). A traditional hammer mill as well as an hydrothermal process taking place in a twin-screw extruder were utilised. Results of the grinding and liberation of rye and wheat straw fibres are discussed based on a detailed particle characterisation (particle size and shape distribution). Besides high calorific value the main pellet quality parameters are mechanical stability, abrasion resistance and further combustion technical characteristics. The particle size distribution displayed optimum characteristics for the combustion processes to be carried out in a furnace. The durability of the pellets produced from straw fibres liberated with twin-screw extruder was comparatively better then that prepared with the straw fibres after grinding with impact mill. Particle size distribution, abrasion values and the strength characteristics showed a good correlation with each. The high presence of N and S would result in high NOx and SOx emissions, where as the high concentrations of Cl would corrode the furnace. These chemical properties of the straw would restrict its usage in small scale furnaces.

Batu Hijau is a porphyry copper-gold deposit located onSumbawa Island in the western Banda Arc of Indonesia. The deposit has been evaluated from 54 000 m of drilling in 105 diamond drill holes over a surface area of 1.2 km2 and to a depth of 1000 m below surface (412 m below sea level). A provisional plan is being evaluated to mine 642 million tonnes at an average grade of 0.61% Cu and 0.55 g/t Au (variable cut-off) from an open pit in the higher grade portion of the resource.   The deposit is associated with a calc-alkaline intrusive complex that was emplaced in a thick sequence of andesitic pyroclastic rocks. The oldest and most widespread intrusion is porphyritic to medium-grained, equigranular, quartz hornblende diorite. At Batu Hijau the western diorite contact zone was intruded by two phases of tonalite. The older tonalite is a stock increasing from 200 m diameter at surface to 500 m at sea level. It consists of quartz, plagioclase and hornblende phenocrysts set in a groundmass of similar composition. A younger tonalite intrudes the tonalite stock, quartz and plagioclase phenocrysts are more abundant and it has a finer groundmass than the older tonalite. Brecciation occurs near the older tonalite contacts but there are no breccia pipes or late-stage features such as pebbledykes or postmineralisation intrusive rocks.   Hydrothermal alteration of Old Tonalite and adjacent rocks is centred on the Old Tonalite and is zoned from a core of pervasive potassic alteration grading to an outer propylitic halo. At depth a propylitic assemblage is developed in the low grade core in the Old Tonalite. Phyllic alteration, late stage and mainly fracture controlled, overprints both potassic and inner propylytic zones. Intermediate argillic alteration overprinting is widespread, particularly on the eastern side of the hydrothermal system, where advanced argillic alteration overlies argillic alteration.   Ore grade mineralisation is cylindrical in shape, up to 800 m in diameter, and is centred on the Old Tonalite. A high grade shell (>0.75% Cu) forms an upward tapering cone in and around the Old Tonalite and reaches the surface in the centre of the deposit. Lower in the shell >l g/t Au and >2 g/t Ag accompany >1% Cu. Below 75 m above sea level mineralisation in the Old Tonalite rapidly decreases as a weakly mineralised core develops, but the limb continues to contain mineralisation to at least 412 m below sea level. Fracture and vein-controlled chalcopyrite and bornite are the dominant hypogene copper minerals and are the hosts for most of the gold mineralisation. Gold occurs free and in the lattice of the copper sulphides, and has been observed in quartz.   Weathering, especially where argillic alteration is developed, has produced a strongly leached cap, up to 147 m thick, below which is an irregular copper enriched supergene zone. Where leaching is not developed, such as over the centre of the deposit, an irregular oxide zone and a weakly developed supergene zone may be present.

It outlines how the results of research undertaken in New Zealand and overseas can help producers address a range of technical factors that impact on production costs and marketability. The paper also discusses trends in coal utilisation for power generation and how new technologies may require coal with different characteristics. Research and development into options for CO2 sequestration are discussed including carbon storage in forests, and removal of CO2 from flue or fuel gas in power stations, and its disposal.

Ausmelt top submerged lance technology is at the cutting edge of technological developments in non-ferrous metal smelting with commercial operations throughout the world. The Technology is being used for lead smelting, copper smelting and matte converting, fuming zinc from slags, recycling iron residue from zinc plants, processing the aluminium industry hazardous waste SPL , precious metal processing, nickel-copper residue smelting and converting, and tin smelting. The Technology is also being developed for projects involving iron-making and waste industry opportunities. There are 19 furnaces operable or under design at the time of writing. The benefits to operators using Ausmelt Technology vary depending on application, but typically result from environmental improvements, enhanced recovery of valuable products, lower capital and operating costs, more flexible operations capable of handling a wide range of feed materials, better removal of impurities, or improved product quality. Growing industry acceptance of the Technology is evidenced by the fact that more than 20 per cent of the worldÆs tin production will be extracted in systems using Ausmelt Technology when the Yunnan Tin Corporation plant starts up in 2001. Metallurgists, industrialists and investors have accepted the Technology for improved operations in both greenfield main smelters and add-on plants in Korea, China, Japan, Germany, Peru, Zimbabwe, India, Namibia and Australia. Ausmelt intends that this paper will update the industry by outlining recent achievements of the Technology in global metallurgical operations.

Thank you for this opportunity to address your conference on 'The role of coal in the New Zealand energy market'. New Zealand's energy market has, in common with much of New Zealand, undergone major change following the market reforms of the Labour Government. As far as the energy sector is concerned this change has been for the better, as it has created for the first time in a very long time a 'true economic market' for energy in New Zealand. This is in marked contrast to the previous regime where: ò Electricity was state operated, subsidised and cross subsidised. ò Oil was imported and subject to a raft of taxes and duties. ò Coal produced by state mines was priced by cabinet committee, based on other energy prices rather than on the costs of production and delivery of the energy product. Today, with the establishment of the SOE's we have a market of competitive supply, where the customer has the choice of energy with prices based on the true costs of production and delivery. This can only be good for the customer as the cost is now based on the real costs of production, not on political whim. So where does coal fit in this brave new world of free market energy supplies? Well, opportunity, they say, knocks but once.

In support of the development of its Liberian iron ore project, ArcelorMittal Mining Research and Development (AM Mining R&D) has performed characterisation and beneficiation test work on drill core samples received from the proposed mine area. In addition to this, a sinter feed product was composed by blending and processing the drill cores in order to predict sintering performance of the ore. This article presents the methodology used to prepare the drill core blend for characterisation, as well as describe the sinter pot trial. Traditionally, the gravity cleaning of coal has been evaluated in pilot plant tests. Attention is now turning to the development of empirical models of gravity cleaning equipment that can be used for the design and evaluation of circuits. This paper presents some preliminary information for spirals and water-only cyclones treating fine coals. Also discussed is how such information gives a better understanding of the operating and performance characteristics of this equipment, how realistic comparisons can be made between different types of equipment, and how small mobile plants could be designed for treating the fine coals 'stockpiled' at many NZ mines.
