Development of Cost-Efficient Environmentally Sound Technology for Enhanced Gold Recovery from Rebellious Gold-Containing Raw Materials Study of biochemical leaching performances in gold-bearing sulfide minerals processing enabled to develop environmentally sound technology of enhanced gold recovery from rebellious gold-containing raw materials. It was found that the ?-10 IMO bacteria activity contributes to increasing system oxygen concentrations and incrementing in rates of oxygen delivery onto surface of gold-bearing minerals. Bacteria activity products, ie, amino acids (?), support the formation of such heterocomplexes as [A-Au-CN]- , providing additional gold recovery into solutions. Technological properties of proposed bacteria solutions were studied. It was found that the proposed bacteria inoculants are capable to growing directly in process of raw materials leaching within a large pH range of media containing cyanides and thiosulfates. They oxidise the sulfur to the sulfate, as well as the antimony (III) and arsenic (III) sulfides to the pentads. For the first time, the hydrophobic cell properties, metabolites emulsifying efficiency, adsorption properties, wetting ability, surface tension and electro-kinetic potential of new bacteria strain solutions were studied as compared with chemical solutions. It was found that the proposed bacteria inoculants reduce surface tension at the solvent-mineral and solvent-concentrate phase boundaries. All aforementioned effects enhance mass transfer processes efficiency. IR-spectroscopy of new bacteria strain culture liquid allowed identifying available amino acids which substantially contribute to heterocomplex anion [A-Au-CN]- formation. Active involvement of heterotrophic bacteria in gold dissolving processes was identified. It was shown that the structure of metals complexes is substantially modified at intensive pulp agitation and during long-term storage. Fractional order reaction in biochemical and chemical gold leaching was identified. It evidences that the gold and impurity metals dissolving processes advance in synchronism. The both processes are running in diffusion zone. Biochemical leaching has advantages over chemical leaching, ie it provides enhanced rates of precious metals dissolving, improved gold recovery by 20 - 30 per cent, decreased cyanide consumption by 50 per cent. At the same time it allows to decontaminate dangerous substances contained in productive solutions produced in rebellious gold-containing raw materials processing. Basic parameters of flotation concentrates leaching by heterotrophic bacteria-assisted processing technology were tried and tested. Technology of gold sorption from leaching solutions was successfully tested.

Five major veining events have been identified within the area surrounding the Mount Whaleback microplaty hematite deposit. These veining events can be directly correlated to the established deformation history of the Hamersley Province (Brown et al, in press). Vein formation temperatures of 203 to 231¦C have been obtained from primary fluid inclusions within veins which formed around the postulated time of ore formation. Preliminary proton induced x-ray emition (PIXE) analysis of these inclusions indicates KCl is the dominant salt species with varying levels of Ca, Fe, Ti, Mn present. It is suggested that some of these veins may have formed from feeder or effluent fluids from microplaty hematite ore formation.

Recent lignite investigations indicate their potential as a strategic long-term fuel resource. This potential however would be determined not only by lignite quantity and quality, but also by economic, physical and social resources required to support it. The following discussion uses the example of a typical lignite mining operation to review the major resource requirements. While recognising that the implications of supplying those resources may be as important as their actual existence, this paper has purposely omitted such discussion as this will be one of the main target areas for the next phase of investigations.

Development of the Boleo Process Flow Sheet and the Direct Solvent Extraction (DSX) Circuit for Cobalt and Zinc Recovery The metallurgical process designed to treat the El Boleo Cu-Co-Zn-Mn ore involves a sulphuric acid leach in seawater under oxidative and then reductive conditions to maximise metal extraction. Copper and cobalt are recovered as cathodes by electrowinning, zinc and manganese as zinc sulphate monohydrate and high quality manganese carbonate, respectively, by precipitation after a number of separation and purification stages. One of the key purification stages of the Boleo metallurgical process is the CSIRO DSX circuit. The DSX circuit was developed using the synergistic solvent extraction (SSX) technology. Initially, a synthetic solution was studied, and by adding 0.4 M LIX63 to 0.5 M Versatic 10 in Shellsol D70, large synergistic shifts were obtained for cobalt (?pH50 4.24) and zinc (?pH50 1.62). After a single contact, the separation factor of metals over manganese reached over 6,000 for cobalt and over 380 for zinc, indicating excellent separation of cobalt and good separation of zinc from manganese, magnesium and calcium. The SSX system was further optimised with the modified synthetic pilot plant solution. The extraction of cobalt and Zn after a single contact was 93 per cent and 70 per cent, respectively, while the Mn concentration in the loaded organic solution was only 0.28 g/L. A proof of principle pilot plant operation was conducted in 2004 and a demonstration pilot plant for final engineering design in 2006 with outstanding performance of the DSX circuit. For the demonstration pilot plant, the overall recovery of cobalt and zinc exceeded 99 per cent with a raffinate containing only 4 mg/L Zn and 1 mg/L Co. The DSX organic system showed no sign of degradation during the pilot plant operation, indicating good chemical stability under the anticipated commercial operating conditions. The DSX circuit will be implemented in the future Boleo processing plant.

Surface subsidence caused by coal mining operations was the subject of a very successful symposium organised by the Illawarra Branch of The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy in February, 1973. This symposium dealt with the principles of subsidence and overseas experiences arising out of underground mining. Since that time the New South Wales Department of Mineral Resources and Development (formerly the Department of Mines) has incorporated in the approval for pillar extraction certain conditions related to the monitoring of surface movement. Surveys and plans are required to be kept at mines where total or partial extraction of coal takes place. This paper traces the monitoring of surface movement in the Northern Coalfields of New South Wales over the past ten years. Reference is made to the National Coal Board's Subsidence Engineers' Handbook (1975) and how the guidelines expressed therein have been beneficial. Mining engineers in Australia are able to plan underground workings where minimum subsidence is allowable and are in a position to foreshadow the surface effects where total pillar extraction is carried out. In certain cases such surface effects can be minimised by structural design in buildings or pipelines.

In this paper, the Australian thick coal seam underground mining potential is highlighted and the characteristics are investigated by analysing a thick seam database. It is clear that thick coal seam resources should be mined with a high recovery, productive, efficient as well as a safe and reliable mining method. Longwall Top-Coal Caving (LTCC) is the most recent thick coal seam mining method which has been developed and extensively used in China for the last ten years. The successful applications indicate that this method has a very high recovery and productivity rate and less development cost in comparison with any other thick coal seam mining method. One of the aims of the current study is to seek potential for the application of LTCC as a thick seam mining method in Australia. In this paper, preliminary results of investigation on Australian thickseam potential are given and results of data analysis for potential LTCC seams in Australia are described. The outcome of this study shows a great promise for the application of LTCC in Australian coal industry.

What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. Pseudoclastic hydrothermal alteration textures occur within quenched coherent dykes forming part of a subaqueous dome complex (~4 Ma) onPonza Island, Italy. These textures are similar to those observed in considerably older (~500 Ma) subaqueous volcanic rocks at a number of localities throughout the Mount Read Volcanics in Tasmania and elsewhere in ancient volcanic sequences of this type in Australia. This is significant because the processes of formation, hydrothermal alteration and secondary mineralisation of ancient volcanic sequences may be better understood if we can make comparisons with modern analogues. Observations at Ponza imply that these pseudoclastic alteration features form synvolcanically or immediately after dyke emplacement and lava extrusion. This is compatible with scenarios presented for their formation in ancient sequences in the Mount Read Volcanics, Tasmania.

Efficacy of Enhanced Gravity Separator in Processing Indian Iron Ore Slime The slime sample was subjected to concentration using Falcon concentrator for their enrichment. The effects of three important variables, eg bowl rotation frequency, back water flow rate and per cent solid were studied on the process performance. Increasing the rotation of the Falcon bowl, enable more material to the underflow by increasing the yield, whereas, the iron content decreases steadily with increasing the rotation of the bowl. The increase in the back water flow effectively removes the clay materials from the underflow at the expense of the yield. Similarly, increasing the per cent solid concentration in the feed produces a better product both in terms of yield and Fe content. Results show that EGS/Falcon can be used for processing Indian iron ore slime and producing pellet grade concentrate.

This paper describes a physical modelling program that recreated block cave propagation in a geotechnical centrifuge. A brief description of the design of the test along with the sample material and monitoring equipment is given. The samples tested showed caving behaviour and fragmentation distributions that one would expect from caving mines, with one cave deviating due to pre-existing major discontinuities in the sample. A series of fractures formed ahead of and parallel to the cave, implying that an extensional failure mechanism may play a larger role in cave development than previously thought. The results of acoustic emission monitoring of the tests show a seismogenic zone advancing ahead of the cave; however, the quantity and quality of the data is too limited to draw any further conclusions.CITATION:Cumming-Potvin, D, Wesseloo, J, Jacobsz, S W and Kearsley, E, 2016. Gladstone Hill, a volcanic-hosted low-sulfidation epithermal prospect in the Coromandel Peninsula, is less than 1 km from the world-class Martha Hill Au-Ag deposit. Gold-silver-bearing quartz veins occur in Late Miocene andesitic volcanic rocks of the Waipupu Formation that are extensively altered. The occurrence, spatial distribution and temporal relationships of hydrothermal minerals have been determined along two cross sections that transect the Amaranth, Gladstone, Cowshed and Moonlight veins. Quartz and pyrite are ubiquitous along these sections. Adularia and chlorite are widespread, but both are scarce in wall rocks adjacent to the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. By contrast, rare hydrothermal albite and epidote are restricted to wall rocks surrounding the Amaranth vein. Illite, which replaces adularia, is widespread and grades laterally eastwards into a zone of interstratified illite-smectite that envelops the Moonlight and Cowshed veins. During late-stage hydrothermal activity, rare calcite formed at depth and uncommon kaolinite and alunite formed at shallow levels. The overall clay mineral zonation with illite grading eastward into interstratified illite-smectite reflects paleothermal gradients of >220¦C to -170¦C towards the margin. The alteration assemblage of quartz, adularia, chlorite, albite, epidote, illite, interstratified illite-smectite and pyrite reflects formation from a near-neutral to weakly alkaline pH chloride water that contained low concentrations of CO2, Late calcite formed from very local descending steam-heated CO2rich water, whereas the rare assemblage of kaolinite and alunite formed from shallow steam-heated acid-sulfate water. Analysis of the available data indicates that the Martha Hill deposit and the Gladstone Hill area formed within a single large geothermal system. We infer that the Martha Hill deposit formed in the main upflow zone, whereas the Gladstone Hill area may have formed adjacent to this upflow zone.

The Midas epithermal system is one of the larger low-sulfidation epithermal vein systems discovered in the western US in recent years, containing in excess of 3 Moz of gold (premining). The deposit is spatially and temporally related to bimodal volcanism in the Northern Nevada Rift; dates on igneous rocks (16 - 14.7 Ma) bracket the age of high grade veins (15.3 Ma). Hydrothermal alteration at Midas is typical of epithermal systems, comprising proximal potassic through distal propylitic assemblages; in contrast to many epithermal systems, Midas has minimal development of wallrock illite/sericite. Mineral assemblages are clearly zoned on the vein structures that acted as focal planes for fluid upflow. Geochemical zoning patterns also show this zoning. Metals were deposited in open-space veins as the result of boiling of hydrothermal fluids; multiple episodes of crustiform mineral deposition are documented in the vein textures. The major vein minerals include quartz, adularia, calcite, selenides and sulfides, with electrum as the primary ore mineral. REE patterns for vein material are similar to patterns for coeval rhyolites, but distinctly different from patterns of the host rocks. Stable isotope data are consistent with meteoric water as the dominant ore fluid. Combined REE and stable isotope data suggest that fluid from which the main ore-bearing stage of the veins was deposited was slightly lower pH than other stages.

The characterisation and assessment of waste rock has been the subject of considerable research, and many guidance documents have been published both internationally and within Australia. While these documents provide detailed information on how to characterise waste rock, there is not a great amount of detail on how to determine the optimal waste management options from an operational viewpoint. For example, typical questions that a mine operator would seek answers to include: What placement method should be used (eg end tipping versus paddock dumping)? What is an optimal tip head height for waste placement in a storage facility? How should sulfide grade control be carried out?Defining the contributing factors to waste management and waste material placement and assessing the contribution of each variable directs these assessments towards a semi-qualitative and quantitative methodology. Quantitative methodologies show an increase in the confidence of these assessments by providing logical, measureable assessments.As part of a strategic assessment for waste management at an active mine site, a detailed risk-based investigation of the influence of variables common to waste placement was completed. These variables included placement method, placement height, sulfur grade and material conditioning (eg compaction) on the associated risks of waste material storage. The assessed risks include temperature assessments (potential for thermal take-off as a result of spontaneous combustion), toxic gas production and flow and acid production potential. Applying a numerical modelling approach to the assessment of the different waste material placement strategies allows for the variation in risk to be graphically presented and communicated through risk matrices and histograms.CITATION:Pearce, S and Lehane, S, 2015. Alluvial platinum was recovered during gold mining operations in Maud Creek, a tributary of the Howard River. Average electron probe analyses give Pt 88.75, Fe 5.27, Ir 0.70, Os 1.06, Pd 0.34, Ru 0.14, Rh 1.29, Cu 1.06. Rare grains of a Pt-Fe-Cu alloy are also present and an unusual feature of all grains is the relatively high rhodium content which finds expression in segregations of rhodium arsenide, cherepanovite. Platinum is found in the Orepuki area of Southland, where it is probably partly derived from the mafic rocks of the Longwood Complex. Rocks of the Rotoroa Complex, similar to those of the Longwood Complex, form bedrock in Maud Creek and are possibly the source of the Howard platinum. Alternatively, it might be derived by glacial transport from the Matakitaki ultramafic block 30 km to the southwest. Origin from the Rotoroa rocks is preferred as, if the Matakitaki rocks are part of the Dun Mountain Ophiolites, they might be expected to contain osmiridium rather than platinum. The ratio Pt:Ir-Os has been widely used to distinguish low Pt:Ir-Os ophiolitic from high Pt:Ir-Os gabbroic assemblages. Mafic complexes such as Longwoods, Darran, Rotoroa, and Riwaka might be expected to show similar high Pt:Ir-Os ratios and be targets for platinum exploration. Detrital platinum examined from the Parapara area, Golden Bay is mainly osmiridium, with rare grains of rutheniridosmine, very similar in composition to that found in concentrates from the Kaniere dredge, West Coast.

In 2010 a store and release cover (the cover) was constructed on the south waste rock dump (SWRD) at Century mine. This also included aerial seeding of province native trees and shrub seeds. The purpose of the cover is to reduce percolation into the potentially acid-forming (PAF) waste rock by maintaining a compacted reduced permeability layer (RPL) at near-saturated conditions. This is achieved by overlaying the RPL with a 1.5 to 2 m thickness of soil-mulch. The soil-mulch has a hummocky final surface that captures rainfall, so it does not runoff, allowing it in part to infiltrate, with excess water removed by evaporation and transpiration. The RPL is the trafficked surface of the SWRD.The unsaturated behaviour of the cover is being monitored by instrumentation including volumetric water content and matric suction sensors and a weather station capable of estimating evapotranspiration. The instrumentation allows for direct measurement of infiltration into the cover, storage of rainfall, percolation through the base of the cover and in situ soil water characteristic curves (SWCC).The key functions used to describe the unsaturated behaviour of the cover materials is the SWCC and the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity function. The SWCC is a plot of soil water versus soil suction. It provides the loci of moisture states of a soil from the saturated to the dry state.The paper presents the results of five years of monitoring. It shows that total infiltration into the top of the SWRD was about 1.6 – 3.7% of cumulative rainfall over five years, with most of the infiltration going into storage within the cover. Runoff from the top of the dump is not allowed therefore, the remaining 95% of the total rainfall was lost to evaporation or as lateral flow when infiltration reached the RPL. The paper presents some simple analyses of the wetting by rainfall infiltration of the cover, leading to breakthrough at the base. Potential means of lowering overall costs to permit deeper stripping include : 1. the use of larger diameter blastholes in highly-fissured strata (to reduce drilling costs); 2. dewatering from semi-permanent bores to reduce blasting costs (by maximising the use of bulk ANFO) and promote highwall stability; and 3. the use of inclined blastholes, bulk AN, staggered V1 patterns, adequate backfill and more cost-effective stemming columns. Each of these is covered. The pumping of bulk watergels continuously raises the blasthole water column, thereby perpetuating the demand for these blasting agents. This must be a principal consideration when choosing between a bulk and a packaged watergel. Any packaged product should exhibit dimensional permanence and an energy yield per metre length equal to that of bulk ANFO. Possible ways in which controlled trajectory blasting (CTB) could benefit deeper stripping operations are outlined. By allowing the maximum use of bulk ANFO, de- watering may be a prerequisite of a viable CTB Operation.

The Late Archaean of South AustraliaÆs Gawler Craton contains significant potential for gold resources. The main targets of interest are migmatised gold style systems of which the Challenger deposit is the best known example. This deposit is one of the lower cost gold producers in Australia due to the high-grade, low-tonnage nature of the mineralisation. Structurally controlled, metamorphosed deposit styles are also possible throughout the Archaean of the Gawler Craton, including occurrences within reactivated shear zones. More typical, lower metamorphic grade orogenic gold styles are also possible within greenstone host sequences identified in the central and southern parts of the Gawler Craton.

Titanium feedstocks are the building blocks of the titanium value chain. They can be mined directly, as is the case for ilmenite, leucoxene and rutile, or manufactured from ilmenite by extracting various quantities of non-TiO2 components from the ore by chemical and/or thermal processes.While feedstocks can be grouped into categories of materials with similar characteristics, they are essentially unique products from very different mining locations around the world. In fact, no two feedstocks are exactly the same. As such, the variations between the available feedstocks, in combination with the permutations in processing technologies to turn the feedstocks into titanium pigment or metal, mean that choices between feedstocks are specific to the location in which they are utilised.In this paper, the authors examine the key requirements of titanium feedstocks to the TiO2 pigment and metal sectors. Apart from the well known differences between feedstock choices for the sulfate and chloride process, the more opaque considerations in feedstock sourcing are examined.
