Morning Star Gold aims to enter the ranks of Australia's gold producers, revitalising the Eastern Victorian Goldfi elds in the second half of 2010 - the fi rst gold production in around 50 years from the Morning Star Gold mine, which was once Australia's largest under WMC. This presentation will outline the redevelopment of the Morning Star Gold Mine from exploration to production. Morning Star Gold NL's (MCO) key project area is centred at the historic mining town of Woods Point and nearby Matlock (to the southeast) and Gaffney's Creek (to the northwest), all of which are located in the lower part of the Victorian Alps roughly 60 kms south of Mansfield. Morning Star has literally numerous historic mines and gold bearing 'dykes' on its tenements, many with a rich production history of high-grade gold from quartz reefs and alluvial sources. The area encompassing the Woods Point goldfi eld and the multiple high-grade gold bearing dyke structures located north towards Jamieson and south towards Walhalla formed one of the most significant mining fields in Australian history. Historical gold production was at least 155 t or around six million ounces of over a century of mining with an average production grade exceeding 27 g per tonne. The bulk of this recorded production came from just a handful of mines and of those only three were mined to any great depth. One of the key historical production hubs in this area was the famous 'Morning Star' mine, which is situated adjacent to Woods Point township. The Morning Star mine produced almost one million ounces at 27 grams per tonne, operating fairly continuously between 1861 and 1959 with a break after Jan 1939 due to the devastating 'Black Friday' bush fi res across eastern Victoria. During the early 1940s, the Morning Star was Australia's biggest gold mine. The Morning Star mine along with Walhalla ensured that this goldfield was third behind Bendigo and Ballarat as Victoria's biggest hardrock gold production centre. Morning Star Gold has rebuilt its 100 per cent owned 'Morning Star' mine with a view to producing gold in the second half of 2010. Morning Star is exploring its regional dykes in order to estimate an overall gold endowment and rank local production sources to feed its proposed mill at the Morning Star mine site. Key initial targets (all within 11 kms of the Morning Star mine) are the Waverly, All Nations, Rose of Denmark, Hunts, Wallaby and Loch Fyne dykes, all of which historically produced high grade gold, much of it gained from only shallow workings above the water table in the weathered zone of rocks. Historically the Morning Star mine was developed over 24 levels to a depth of 940 m via one large vertical shaft and a smaller, deeper inclined shaft at the 1900 feet level underground. At present MCO has dewatered and completely refurbished all infrastructure to the ten level (~310 m below surface). MCO knows there are a number of substantially under-explored and undeveloped or partially developed but not stoped areas within the Morning Star mine. As a result, MCO has been carrying out extensive channel sampling and an underground diamond drilling program targeting areas of the mine that were largely unexplored and undeveloped by the last operators of the mine - Western Mining Corp Ltd (Gold Mines of Australia). Four thousand, fi ve hundred pages of archival WMC records have helped the cause significantly. The shaft refurbishment and reconstruction stage is complete. This has been a program that originally commenced back in 1993 and has cost around $22 M. This refurbishment paved the way for the extensive underground resource focused diamond drilling program, which MCO completed in 2008 with two company-owned and operated drill rigs from drill cuddies on level 9 (900 feet underground) of the mine. This drilling, which encountered some stunning grades intersections and multiple visible gold hits, has outlined further production opportunities including 0.4 m @ 1392 g/t Au (MS 410). Metallurgical testing conducted by Gekko Systems of samples obtained from the exploration program found gravity concentration and a leach circuit gave recoveries of ~95 per cent to 99 per cent, or ~92 per cent from gravity alone at a coarse crush (300 ¦m). Currently, the plan is to use gravity to fi rstly produce dore bars on-site from the free milling gold and secondly a saleable concentrate for CIL processing off-site. A purpose built 10 t/h (~80 000 t/a) gravity treatment plant was subsequently ordered from Gekko and is expected to be installed onsite and commissioned in the Q3 2010. The plant features fi ne crushing with a vertical shaft impactor, followed by gold concentration by inline pressure jig, inline spinner and Wilfley table. This is an ABSTRACT ONLY. The tailing retreatment project rated at 10 000 t/day commenced operations in October 1982. The operation consists of dredging, feed preparation, cyanide leaching and carbon-in-pulp (CIP) gold recovery followed by Zadra atmospheric stripping and electrowinning. For the first two years the operation was adversely affected by excessive cyanide consumption and low gold extraction. Investigations demonstrated that the very fine, or slime, fraction of the tailing was the dominant consumer of cyanide and dissolved oxygen. The plant flowsheet was subsequently modified by inclusion of 80 - 100 mm dia. cyclones for slimes separation and a 31 m dia. thickener for water recovery. Treatment of deslimed feed in the CIP plant has reduced sodium cyanide consumption from an average 1.85 kg/t to 1.15 kg/t. The reduced oxygen consumption by the CIP plant feed has resulted in higher dissolved oxygen levels, frequently reaching supersaturation after 4 to 5 h contact time. This has allowed much improved gold extraction from the existing CIP plant capacity. Gold extraction from the mixed pyritic siliceous tailing has improved from an average U prior to desliming to a current 57%. Investigations are continuing on the recovery of gold from the discarded slimes.

In the flotation of fine particles, problems arise which do not occur with coarse-ground pulps. For example, the presence of colloidal or near-colloid- al gangue particles gives rise to ex- cessive entrainment in the froth, with reduced grade as a consequence. If the values themselves are finely dissemi- nated, the recovery usually decreases as the particles diminish in size, so a low recovery is combined with poor grade. Sutherland and Wark (1955) referred to the complications arising from the presence of fines, indicating (p.382) that fine grinding "introduces diffi- culties that have not yet been satis- factorily overcome". At the time of writing, very little work has been done on fines flotation specifically, yet the groundwork has been well laid. The availability of better scientific instruments, together with the general advance of understanding in a wide variety of relevant research fields, has taken us a long way toward finding the reasons behind the problems as- sociated with fines, and also toward finding practical solutions. It would be useful to define what is meant by "fine" particles before going further. To some extent, the definition is somewhat elastic as far as flotation is concerned, because the density of the particles has a bearing on whether or not they act as fines. But in general we are dealing with particles less than about 20 pm in Diameter.

The Earth Moving Equipment Safety Round Table (EMESRT) was established by mining companies in 2006 to influence manufacturer's equipment design through a process of engagement. 2010 EMESRT member companies include Anglo American, Barrick, BHP Billiton, Centennial Coal, Collahausi, Newcrest, Newmont, Rio Tinto, Vale and Xstrata.Driven by a persistent need for retrofits to new equipment, such as haul trucks, EMESRT initially engaged with Surface Equipment Manufacturers including Caterpillar, Komatsu, Leibherr, Hitachi, Le Tourneau and Terex. These OEMs responded positively to the EMESRT initiative, welcoming the opportunity for dialogue with an aligned industry regarding human factors issues related to equipment design, rather than needing to respond to the disparate range of demands for design modifications previously received from individual customers. This engagement process is about making global sustained changes within the OEM organisations and within the mining companies. It is a very international exercise. For example, over two weeks in September 2010, a total of 21 different miners from ten different companies travelled from Australia, South Africa, Canada, Brazil, Singapore and the United States to engage with OEM counterparts who assembled from the United States, Japan, France, Sweden, Finland and Germany. EMESRT Surface Group representatives completed a whirlwind tour of the major North American manufacturers of mining equipment. Starting in Dallas (Atlas Copco, LeTourneau), this tour passed through Gainesville (Sandvik), Newport News (Liebherr), Guelph - Ontario (Hitachi) and Milwaukee (P&H Mining/Joy Global; Bucyrus), before winding up in Peoria, Illinois (Komatsu, Caterpillar). Over nine meetings, this group engaged with 129 individuals from nine OEMs. The EMESRT group welcomed miners from four non-member companies to come along for the meetings. These companies are Syncrude Canada Ltd, the Kearl Oil Sands Project - Imperial Oil (ESSO), Suncor Energy Ltd and Teck Resources Ltd.Other mining industry sectors have now expanded the EMESRT scope from surface mining to include exploration and underground mining equipment. In 2009, EMESRT was organised into four Technical Groups, consisting of EMESRT member company representatives, to focus on engagement with OEMs of surface, underground coal and soft rock, underground hard rock, and exploration drilling equipment. An advisory group has been formed to coordinate activities between all workgroups and provide strategic direction and cohesion between all activities. The Minerals Industry Safety and Health Centre (UQ-SMI) facilitates and coordinates all EMESRT activities on behalf of member companies. Building on successes with individual Surface Mining OEMs, EMESRT now aims to help OEMs in their transition to a sustainable design process that will incorporate and address specific design philosophies at the concept phase of design, so that significant improvements can be made up front for little cost within the overall budget. EMESRT members plan to educate all stakeholders, internally, within their own companies, and externally, by addressing industry associations, regulators and other end users about new ways of evaluating equipment design based on EMESRT purchasing specifications. This presentation will outline the EMESRT approach and report on progress in 2010.

Northparkes is located 27 km north of the township of Parkes in central New South Wales, Australia. The operations consist of underground block cave mines and an ore processing plant that produces high-grade copper and gold concentrate. Production is currently sourced from the E48 Lift 1 block cave mine and open cut stockpiles. Mining commenced at Northparkes in 1994 as an open cut operation. Underground block cave mining began in 1997. Northparkes was the first mine in Australia to use the highly efficient block cave mining method, which relies on gravity and natural rock stresses to fragment the ore.An issue affecting production in 2011 was the stability of the E48 mine. A small portion of the drives on the extraction level began to deteriorate as the ground support system failed. The problem was temporarily fixed by stopping production in three extraction drives and tight filling selected areas within these drives (and drawpoints) with low-strength concrete. This action provided immediate support and stability whilst allowing time to investigate potential ground support remedies. From these investigations it was decided to use resin injection technology and additional ground support to stabilise the rock in the aforementioned extraction drives as the concrete plug was excavated in a controlled advance and sequence. This made the area safe and ensured the ongoing safe operation of the E48 mine. The redevelopment of one of these drives began late in 2011, with the remainder being progressively redeveloped over the next two years in order to maintain the extraction level stability.This paper looks at the strategies employed to safely re-open previously converged drawpoints and associated extraction drives that were subject to high abutment loading that was possibly associated with premature cave breakthrough.CITATION:Samosir, J and Snyman, L A, 2014. The Ernest Henry Mining (EHM) underground mine is situated adjacent to the Great Artesian Basin in North Queensland and within a fracture zone. Underground development commenced in February 2008 and has extended to approximately 1000 vertical metres below the surface.Groundwater has been encountered in numerous locations throughout the mine, predominantly on the eastern side of the orebody and often related to fault structures. Most of the groundwater encountered has been managed with conventional pumping systems; however, on occasions large water inflows have been encountered, which have had a significant impact on the planned development of the mine. Some of the intersections encountered had the potential to compromise the mine from a combination of high temperature (over 45°C), high pressure (3500 kPa) and high flows (50–100 L/s).This paper describes three case studies where significant water inflows were encountered and then controlled by the injection of cementitious grout into the rock mass. The case studies are the 1650 mid-shaft heading, the 1325 shaft access decline and the 1625 to 1475 fresh air rise (FAR) raise bore. Each case study includes a brief description of the event that occurred and the grouting equipment and techniques developed to enable mining to continue.The paper also describes the development of a hydrogeological map of the mine, the probe-hole regime used for high-risk headings and the required processes and systems to inject both cementitious grouts and polyurethane resin into the rock mass.CITATION:Purvis, T, Calverd, J and Greve, A-K, 2014. Decarbonisation has become a major challenge for the global steelmaking industry, turning towards new technologies aimed at carbon footprint reduction, which on its own accounts for approximately 9 per cent global emissions. The iron and steel industry represents a ‘hard to abate’ sector, where much of efforts are currently being deployed into initiatives aiming to decarbonise the ironmaking through the use of green hydrogen, carbon capture utilisation and storage and state-of-the-art operation of current technologies, while little efforts being deployed to find carbon-efficient solution to iron ore burden preparation, where high-grade iron concentrate will increase in importance to ironmaking regardless of the chosen reduction route. Quebec Iron Ore (QIO), a subsidiary of Champion Iron Limited (Champion), produces high-grade hematite concentrate with one of the lowest carbon global footprints. Still, QIO is partnering with its clients to the development of burden solutions to minimise CO2 emission, in the seek for a decarbonised steel. In a strong technological partnership, Binding Solutions Limited (BSL) has developed a novel, coldbinding technology to provide a cleaner, more cost-effective alternative to induration. The technology allows miners and steel producers to reduce Capex significantly and reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions by 90 per cent. QIO and BSL have partnered to adapt the disruptive cold binding technology developed by BSL to QIO’s concentrate to produce a high-quality low emissions iron ore agglomerate. This paper describes the efforts taken to further develop BSL’s cold binding technology and its application to QIO’s high-grade iron ore concentrate to produce a hematite cold bonded briquette (hCBB) showing comparable performances with high quality seaborne fired pellets.

The Gramalote orebody is a large low-grade gold deposit situated in the San Roque municipality, 124 km north-east of Medellin in Antioquia, Colombia. It is jointly owned by AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) and B2Gold and is currently in Feasibility Study phase. In 2013 AGA requested CRCORE to undertake a preliminary study of the potential application at Gramalote of pre-concentration by screening, part of the Grade Engineering suite. 160 samples of coarse assay rejects (-3 mm) were tested and showed one of the strongest responses seen worldwide to that time, suggesting that about 70% of the gold could be recovered into 40% of the mass. This was seen as potentially markedly improving the Gramalote economics. A large-scale testing program was implemented on site to follow up these results. A total of 18 samples of 17 t each were mined along a pre-existing exploration adit. A complex test flowsheet allowed size fractions to be generated from the as-received material as well as after crushing to 53, 23 and 3 mm, all from the same head sample. The procedures were designed after carrying out a heterogeneity study to measure sampling errors. The coarser size fractions were designed to study the effect of crushing on upgrade response and predict the response on open-pit run-of-mine ore. The finer size fractions were designed to investigate means of predicting the upgrade response across the orebody. The large-scale testing closely confirmed the average upgrade response as predicted from drill core assay rejects but found that only the -53 mm crushed material accurately predicted the upgrade response of individual samples. Ore geochemistry was able to usefully distinguish samples with good and poor response. A small study on drill core suggested that, for Gramalote, fine crushed material distinguishes vein associated and disseminated values but not other factors that control actual outcomes.

A brick veneer house located on a open-pit coal mine lease has been subject to ground vibration levels of up to 222 mm/s, and air vibration levels of up to 145 dBL. The dynamic response of the structure was measured with accelerometers, geophones, and strain gauges as part of a project investigating the response of brick veneer houses to blasting. This paper outlines the project, and provides information on brickwork strength, foundation investigations, and observations on damage due to blasting. Correlations have been made between crack behaviour and factors such as blast vibration levels and rainfall.

Efficient pre-concentration using natural and induced deportment starts with effective blast design. Leveraging these characteristics using Size-Based Grade Engineering® techniques requires detailed understanding and measurement of the particle size distribution (PSD) of the Run of Mine (ROM) ore. In turn, blasts must be designed to optimise fragmentation for the pre-concentration method. To be successful, fragmentation outcomes must be predicted and measured as part of the blast design process to account for the response ranking of the rock mass. The upgrade achieved using Size-Based Grade Engineering® methodologies will rely on the proportion of feed that reports to the screen undersize, so particle size distribution of the feed stock is of paramount importance if the potential benefits are to be achieved and maintained. Measuring actual fragmentation in the ROM ore and comparing with predictions allows the modification of subsequent blast designs to optimise fragmentation for pre-concentration scenarios. Automating this process can deliver significant increases in productivity and mine site profits. This paper discusses the importance fragmentation plays in Size-Based Grade Engineering® and explores technologies and methodologies used to measure it, consistently ensuring the best outcomes.

In 1993 after over 110 years of mining operations, production ceased at the Broken Hill North Mine. Following the cessation of operations a rehabilitation program was developed to satisfy the requirements of the various government departments. This program has been implemented progressively since mine closure. The paper will discuss: primary aims and objectives of the rehabilitation program, implementation of the program, rationale behind rehabilitation objectives, and problems encountered in implementation of the program. To-date the primary rehabilitation of the mine has involved the capping of redundant tailing dams with inert waste rock to prevent the contamination of the receiving environment. A Water Management Plan has been developed to contain all run-off from the mine area in an extreme storm event. A cultural heritage assessment of the leases has been undertaken to ensure the rehabilitation is consistent with the historical significance of the site and community expectations. All redundant material from the mine has been sold in a æno reserveÆ auction and the workshop area has been relocated to the Southern operations. At present the only active areas on the mine are a maintenance area for equipment for the Potosi open pit, and a primary crusher for Potosi ore which is railed to the Southern operations for further processing. Upon completion of the rehabilitation program, Pasminco Broken Hill Mine intends to relinquish the mining leases to the Department of Mineral Resources.

This paper outlines a laboratory-based design method, founded in critical state soil mechanics, for identification of an appropriate compaction specification to ensure dilative conditions prevail across the design TSF stress range. The method makes use of the critical state line (CSL) and consolidation tests prepared at varying compactive efforts. The CSL and consolidation curves are plotted together in e-log p’ space, with the compaction curves transformed from vertical effective stress to mean effective stress using the coefficient of earth pressure at rest (K0). Consideration is given to the sensitivity of K0 as it is generally not available during the design phase. An example of the design method is illustrated with laboratory data.

Rock mass response in blasting is an important element to determine the performance of a blast along with its other outcomes. The near-field monitoring for rock mass response analysis is vital for determining the behaviour of a blast; however, due to costly and cumbersome methods involved in such measurements the subject has received scant attention so far and the publications on this account are perfunctory in nature. This paper presents a non-destructive method to monitor the blast-induced pressure in the rock mass at a distance from a blasthole. The methodology of monitoring and a few examples of actual field monitoring are detailed in this paper. The responses of the rock in the near-field of a blasthole under dynamic loading have been documented to predict fragmentation and throw. The proposed method has also been used in limited cases earlier by the author to predict flyrock using a semi-empirical method and trajectory equation. The pros and cons of the method are discussed while throwing light on the actual response and the prediction of fragmentation and throw of blasted rock.CITATION:Raina, A K and Murthy, V M S R, 2015. Mines operating close to communities face growing challenges, especially with their drilling and blasting activities. Proper management of environmental and community impacts is critical to provide sustainability to the mining business in the long-term, by enabling the licensee to operate. This paper will present new technology solutions to minimise the impacts to communities and the environment from blasting operations. A case study of the wireless initiation projects conducted at Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine (located in Paracatu, Minas Gerais – Brazil), will be presented. Focused on overcoming the complex challenges in the mine, Orica and Kinross searched for initiatives to optimise the drilling and blasting operations. The team evaluated the WebGen™ wireless initiation system for controlling environmental impacts as well as operational flexibility and productivity. Since January 2023, three planned wireless blasts to demonstrate the technology and applications were executed. In the tests, the vibration level was able to be maintained lower than the limit of 3.0 mm/s while dust and flyrock impacts were well controlled. The main benefits of using this technology for the Morro do Ouro Mine are: reducing the number of blasts while increasing the blasted mass per month; control of projection of fragments using additional cover; dust control by watering the bench easily; lightning initiation risk reduction due to the absence of wires or tubes on the surface; flexibility in changing the blast day to better control the noise and dust; flexibility in mine planning mining (potential application in the future). The use of the WebGen™ wireless initiation system, enables improved productivity while enhancing safety and reducing impacts to communities. Implementation of this technology has enabled Kinross Morro do Ouro Mine to build trust with its neighbours, maintain the license to operate, and helping to mobilise resources in a sustainable way. This has allowed Kinross to position Morro do Ouro Mine as a world reference operation, especially in relation to innovation, safety, and social responsibility.

From 1972 until 1989 when operations were suspended Bougainville Copper Limited (BCL, owned 53.58 per cent by Rio Tinto Limited) operated a large open pit mine and processing facility at Panguna on Bougainville Island, Papua New Guinea producing copper concentrate containing significant quantities of gold and silver.BCL has a stated vision of recommencing operations at Panguna. In 2008, Rio Tinto, on behalf of BCL, conducted a multi-disciplinary study to assess the technical and financial viability of redeveloping the Panguna operation. One of the key outputs of the study was a Joint Ore Reserves Committee (JORC) Code compliant mineral resource statement based on the existing block model and fundamental data, archived since mine closure. Historical data (including the resource block model and drill hole data) was recovered from computer archives by a former Panguna mine employee familiar with the various obsolete data formats, thus maintaining an unbroken chain of custody of the data by Rio Tinto since operations were suspended. No additional data were collected as part of this study.The extensive data and documentation archive facilitated a sufficiently detailed evaluation of the fundamental data and model to support an updated resource statement. Table 1 of the JORC Code was used to guide the model validation process.Reconciliation of blasthole and metallurgical plant data with the reserve model, indicated that the copper and gold drill hole composite database was significantly biased towards underestimation in several key domains due to a combination of the following: mineralisation loss during core loss, core loss (minor), vertical drill holes failing to intersect sufficient subvertical mineralised fractures and veins, drill hole spacing too wide, and variable diamond drill hole core size. The resource model evaluation was based on three material types (all previously mined at Panguna), that were defined based on cut-off grade and rock type parameters: direct feed ore – material for delivery directly to the plant, preconcentration and screening ore – subeconomic material beneficiated to produce fines of economic grade, and waste. Three pit shells and designs were generated based on three separate sets of economic parameters. These economic parameters were also used to assign material types to the block model. The three resulting models were then evaluated against the corresponding pit shells.Classification of the resource was approached conservatively due to the inherent bias in the drill hole data. Consequently only Indicated and Inferred resources were tabulated.The study highlighted the importance of maintaining detailed documentation pertaining to resource estimates and operational history, particularly reconciliation, and the value that can be added by a simple, low-cost data compilation exercise.

The recently opened Hera Au-Pb-Zn-Ag mine in central New South Wales has provided an ideal opportunity to demonstrate the calculation of sulfide ore mineralogy using normative methods. Normative mineralogy applies a set of sequential rules based on the species likely to be present to assign the chemical components of a sample to their respective mineral components. The dominant sulfide mineral assemblage present at Hera is galena, iron-bearing sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite and pyrite. A normative technique for estimating the relative abundance of each of these species from drill hole, grade control and metallurgical assay data sets has been developed. This includes a process for deriving a gangue iron value and differentiating pyrrhotite from pyrite using sulfur/iron ratios. A calculated total sulfide volume value has been utilised at the mine to improve interpretation of lode boundaries. Normative drill hole values have also been used for domaining within the orebody, with large scale mineralogical trends evident. Dry bulk density (BD) values calculated using a normative species-weighted method show good correlation with measured BD values (R2 = 0.895) and are a significant improvement on the Pb+Zn+Cu regression method (R2 = 0.646) previously used. Application of these calculations to identify errors in assay databases is demonstrated, with specific reference to the data set for the nearby Nymagee copper deposit. Validation of block model grades is also explored and a method to improve resource estimates using direct normative mineral interpolation is proposed. The integration of the normative data into the production and metallurgical data sets at Hera is described and the relationship of the normative minerals to other economic elements such as gold and silver is discussed.CITATION:McKinnon, A R, 2017. Grade control is a process of maximising value and reducing risk, through the delivery of quality tonnes to the mill via the accurate definition of ore and waste. It essentially comprises data collection, integration and interpretation; local resource estimation; stope design; supervision of mining and stockpile management. The foundation of all grade control programs should be that of geological understanding led by high-quality mapping and sampling to drive appropriate estimation strategies and mining. Gold veins show various complex features relating to erratic grade distribution (nugget effect), variable geometry and internal architecture. These include variations in dip, strike and width, late-stage faulting/shearing effects and geometallurgy. Such variations generally require close geological understanding to ensure optimum grade, minimal dilution and maximum mining recovery. A well designed grade control program will prove to management and stakeholders that by applying geological knowledge, the mining process can be more efficient and cost effective. This paper reviews the issues of grade control in underground gold mines and focuses on integrated mapping and sampling through three case studies.

The paper explores the sustainability of the Australian mining industry, and the potential for application of a substitute fuel into existing mining operations. This alternative fuel biodiesel is produced from biological oils and not from refined hydrocarbons like the transport fuel diesel (petrodiesel). The fuel is compatible with all current diesel equipment with little to no modification and has many superior properties. As biodiesel is derived from biological sources it is æcarbon neutralÆ meaning there is no net carbon addition to the atmosphere when the fuel is burned. The current fuel, petrodiesel releases long stored carbon dioxide (CO2) and is of concern to Australian government targets which seek to reduce these emissions. The mining industryÆs unique reliance on petrodiesel is of particular interest when assessing the substitution of biodiesel into underground and open cut operations. The underground benefits of biodiesel see a reduction in the noxious emissions of carbon monoxide and diesel particulate matter, both contaminants which require extensive diluting ventilation to ensure safe levels. As biodiesel is both safer to store due to its higher flash point and produces less exhaust emissions, its occupational health and safety benefits in underground mines is clear. The use of biodiesel in open cut mines benefits the environmental sustainability aspects of the project. The formulation of national targets relating to carbon dioxide emission reductions promotes any measure to reduce CO2 within the mining environment. As the diesel engine is one of the least emission efficient (kWh/tonne CO2) energy sources on-site, its potential for reduction in CO2 at minimal cost is the greatest. By substituting the fuel, significant quantities of site emissions are reduced, thereby achieving the goals of improved site sustainability and the governmentÆs targets to reduce emissions. This aspect of gauging mutually beneficial relationship regarding government interests and mining industry profitability is the underlying outcome for this paper.
