The magnitude of the payloads carried by mine haul trucks can have a strong influence on the mine production rates and costs. Consequently control of truck payloads is highly desirable, but in many mines the unavailability of means for measuring payloads reliably, accurately and easily has resulted in a low level of control over truck payloads. Consideration is given to two techniques which are applicable to the measurement of payloads carried by mine haul trucks, namely truck weighing and direct measurement of payloads with truck based systems. Accuracy assessments for two types of truck weighing platforms and two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems are provided. Results show that weighing platforms based on hydraulic components have proved inadequate, while strain gauge type weighing platforms can estimate payloads to within 2% of true payload when installed, maintained and used correctly. The assessment of the two prototype truck based direct payload measurement systems shows that a high proportion of payloads were estimated to within 5% of the payloads derived from accurate weighing platforms and that these systems appear to have the potential to provide convenient and accurate measurement of payloads. This should enable payloads to be much better controlled than has been possible to date. Predictions of the effect of payloads on production rates and some components of truck haulage costs are possible and some typical results are presented. Accurate prediction of the effect of payloads are not yet possible for some major components of truck haulage costs.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. Structural analyses of oriented bore core sections from the West Wallsend No.2 Colliery Holding together with investigations in adjac- ent collieries and on the surface delineated structural phenomena. The rocks examined are anisotropic due to strongly developed bedding planes and the presence of penetrative joint planes. Joints, in this context, are regarded as mechanical discontinuities, they are genetically identif- ied wherever possible and their spatial attit- udes are determined and geometrically related to the regional structure. Identifiable anisotropies in the roof- and floor-strata of the Borehole Seam render favour- able mining directions for longwall and bord and pillar layouts.

This paper highlights two aspects of the mineral sands industry in Australia: the development of the industry from approximately 1870 through to 1980, and the author’s experience in the industry from 1966 to date.The first real heavy mineral (HM) mining in Australia started in 1870 with the mining of heavy mineral slicks on the beaches along the east coast of Australia. The real potential of Australian heavy minerals was however only realised in the 1920s with the first production of a heavy mineral concentrate that was shipped to Canada for processing. Post WW 11 and the Korean War, Australia was the largest producer of mineral sands products in the world as well as a significant developer of associated separation equipment and technology. The number of producing companies in the east coast peaked at 33 in 1957, was reduced to ten by 1965, and subsequently further reduced to five in 1980 as a result of potential mining areas being declared National Parks or Conservation Reserves. Today there is one company, Unimin Australia Pty Ltd (formally Consolidated Rutile Ltd) operating on the east coast. In contrast there were three companies on the west coast in 1965, four companies in 1980, and four companies today (albeit not the same companies).There have been considerable ups and downs for the industry in Australia, however world wide it was renowned in the past as being an industry that attracted numerous interesting and innovative characters that played a major role in developing it into the vibrant industry that it is today. This, given the current climate, is predicted to continue into the future.The author has been continuously involved in the industry for over 45 years from 1966, initially as an electrician at Consolidated Rutile Ltd culminating in the role of General Manager/President of Iluka Resources Limited USA, prior to his retirement in 2009. His exposure has been world wide and has covered all aspects of the industry but in the main focused on project development and operational areas. During this time there have been significant technological advances, yet to some extent the basic principles have not changed at all. Some of the most noteworthy advances include the development of the Wright Spiral in 1977, the development of the Reading High Intensity Wet Magnet (WHIMS), the rare earth magnets, the CRL floating thickener and the improvement of analytical techniques. From a safety, health and environmental perspective there has been significant advances that the industry has much to be proud of. These include wetland restoration both in Australia and in the US, the restoration of farmland in Virginia and Capel, and the re-establishment of native species, for example at Eneabba and Richards Bay to name but a few.

This paper proceeds from the premise that process improvement is a key part of the mineral engineer’s role, and one in which he/she can make a significant contribution to shareholder value. It presents four tools to help with process improvement projects. Two are designed for process monitoring, to determine as soon as possible whether there has been a true change in performance: the cumulative sum (cusum) control chart plot with V-mask, and the control chart using a process model. The other two are used for process optimisation: simplex self-directing evolutionary operation (SSDEVOP), and a response surface model developed using a central composite rotatable experimental design (CCRD). These methods are robust, have a rigorous theoretical basis and are easy to implement. They also promote project continuity which increases the chances of success, particularly in fly-in/fly-out (FIFO) operations. Variants are used in other industries, but they are rarely if ever applied in mineral processing to-day for reasons which are unclear. The paper gives examples of the application of each method in concentrators which demonstrate that they have the potential to be useful additions to the mineral engineer’s professional toolbox.CITATION:Napier-Munn, T J, 2014. A methodology for the inversion of a scaled charge weight superposition model to predict peak particle velocity (PPV) has been examined. The inversion involves two steps: first simulated annealing is used to get an initial estimate of the model parameters; and second, these parameters are used as input to a quasi-Newton non-linear optimisation method, used to refine the value of the parameters. The methodology recovers the three required parameters (two charge weight scaling parameters and a time window width) and does this directly from a single production blast for a given point of interest. It has been tested on a synthetic example and recovered the input model parameters successfully in the presence of introduced noise with a coefficient of variation ranging up to ten per cent. Another test used the vibration measurements of three tunnel blasts monitored during the construction of the Citybanan tunnel in Stockholm. In this case, the three model parameters are found from one blast and for a given point of interest, and the PPV at the same point of interest is predicted for the second and third blast fired in the same vicinity as the first blast. The three blasts used different firing sequences. The predicted PPV limits use a confidence interval determined from the scatter in the peak levels obtained from the single calibration blast. The methodology was able to predict an upper bound for the PPV in 21 of the 26 tunnel blast vibrations studied. These predictions improve on a previous study involving the same model but which did not use the inversion process above. Given this reasonable success, further testing of the method on other data sets and alternative forward prediction models is recommended.CITATION:Lawlor-O’Neill, M L and Spathis, A T, 2015. The Black Star and Racecourse orebodies below 15 level contain a major portion of the primary silver-lead-zinc ore reserves of 56 million tonnes at 150 g/t Ag, 6.4% Pb and 6.5% Zn at Isa Mine. Extraction from this area is scheduled to begin in the early 1980's. Mining in this block will be quite com- plicated as the ore is contained in a dozen separate orebodies varying in width from 3 m to 20 m with only narrow barren pillars between them in some cases. Mining objectives which consider metal recovery, costs, environmental and safety factors, operating requirements and rock mechanics are used to compare proposals. The planning work involved in formulating mining proposals considers disposition of reserves, scheduling factors, sequence of extraction, extraction methods, haulage set-up and ventilation requirements.

A comprehensive analysisof rock structures in non-oriented (axially oriented) drillcore is now available (Laing, in press). The system embodies new concepts which better equip the geologist and engineer to deal from the outset with optimising the acquisition of structural information in drillcore, logging, interpreting, and graphically presenting the results. The few existing techniques for determining orientations of structures are augmented by a wide range of new techniques, and all are brought together into two solution types by considering the underlying Euclidean geometries. Analysis of these solution types in terms of what data are required to implement each solution and what assumptions need to be made, leads to strategies which facilitate intelligent design of different drilling programs for blind and outcropping situations. Drillcorc is variably structurally fertile, depending on the number of different structures present. This concept fosters the selective logging only of the more fertile core. Drillholes are also variably fertile, depending on their orientational relationship to the structures in the host rocks. Structural parameters are either vectorial or non-vectorial. Vectorial structures parameters comprise normal structural orientations plus polar vectors like vergence, younging, shear sense and so on. They can be determined by one of two solution types: external solutions, which use an external reference structure to fix the drillcore and thus permit orientation of all structures within that core, and internal solutions, which use orientational data from a selected structure at three or more different drillhole orientation to determine the unique orientation of that structure, without reference to any external structure.

The sinking of the new No. 3 Shaft being mainly concerned with providing for the continuation of mining operations north of the existing workings, requirements for the shaft and haulage equipment were assessed, having in mind the anticipated needs of the Company in future years, the .available knowledge and probable future trends of the orebody, and also that the shaft would be required to act as a downcast airway for the ventilation system associated with the northern underground workings.

The ferrous and non-ferrous metallurgical industries have been utilising slags, fluxes and mattes for process optimisation and quality improvements at high temperatures. Understanding the fundamentals of the thermodynamics and kinetics of chemical metallurgy regarding slags, fluxes and mattes has been essential to the technological developments of these optimisation and improvements. This work will discuss how these fundamentals have been studied in the reactions involved and implemented in the ferrous industry from primary refining to continuous casting. In particular, the chemical driving forces that allow these reactions to take place and the limitations of the kinetics that require optimisation to enhance the reactions. In addition, the future research direction for slag technology innovation and the role of these fundamentals will also be described.

Firedamp drainage has become an essential part of many mine environmental systems, and new applications are arising. Installations are evolving further to satisfy ever changing basic requirements, standards, and iniilny needs. In this paper, water seal, vacuum based installations are considered, as well as moni- toring, protective and control systems which have been developed for continuous, manless, and trouble free operation. Some factors affecting plant capacity and extractor per- formance are identified and assessed. INTRODUCTION Firedamp drainage applications are incr- easing world wide as mining engineers strive for improved safety and security, and further concentration of coal output. Fewer and fewer mines are able nowadays to satisfy coal prod- uction and firedamp control requirements solely by air dilution or by air dilution and underground firedamp extraction plants. As a result, dependence on surface extraction plants is increasing. This paper deals with som requirements and applications of such installations. I. Arc-type volcanic activity has been a major feature of the late Cenozoic geological evolution of the Pacific-Australian plate boundary in the northern New Zealand region. The timelspace distribution patterns of arc-type rocks reflect changes in the nature of the plate boundary as it has evolved. Inception of volcanism began in the north during earliest Miocene times (26 Ma) following ophiolite emplacement and during the next 10 Ma developed into a volcanic arc segment extending south to the present position of the central North Island. The northern part of the arc became extinct about 15 Ma ago, but activity continued in the central (Coromandel) part of the arc until about 5 Ma ago. In late Pliocene and Quaternary times volcanic activity has become concentrated in a northeast trending zone which is collinear with the Tonga-Kermadec Arc.

The movements of the major continental cratons and the distribution of the principal tectonostratigraphic terranes are reviewed in the Circum-Pacific region during Phanerozoic time. It is concluded that major periods of orogeny and consolidation of accreted terranes in the Circum-Pacific region is best correlated with periods of advance of cratonic blocks over the Pacific Ocean basin combined with relative convergent to transpressive motions between the cratons and the Pacific Ocean plates. Continental collisions and collision of terranes with continental margins has not been a significant geodynamic process in Circum-Pacific tectonic evolution. The permanency of the Pacific Ocean basin throughout 500 MA is remarkable. It appears no continental block or large continental fragment has ever entered or crossed the Pacific Ocean basin since early Paleozoic time. This area where no continent has entered for 500 MA is almost coincident with the present Pacific Ocean basin and seems associated with the 25 to 100 meter geoid high which dominates the present-day figure of the Earth.

The Australian Coal Combustion Testing and Research Facility has been operating commercially for one year and during that period coal product evaluations have been conducted on behalf of four coal companies and one electricity commission. The facility is equipped to assess the behaviour of steaming coal in milling, combustion (including flame stability, burnout and heat transfer), ash deposition and erosion, fly ash collection and gaseous emissions. The relevance of the results of the pilot testing to industrial practice was demonstrated during the calibration of the facility using four coals burnt in Australian power stations. The calibration coals were from the Tarong and Gladstone Power Stations in Queensland, tluja Power Station in Western Australia and Bayswater Power Station in New South Wales. Also an opportunity arose to visit an overseas power station to observe a full scale test burn using one of the early coals tested on a commercial basis in the combustion test facility. The calibration trials showed excellent agreement with industrial coal performance in t:orms of flame stability, turndown, carbon burnout and gaseous emissions. Encouraging correlations were also found in the case of furnace radiation, boiler deposits (slagging and fouling) and electrostatic precipitation. In the case of the last group the only real reservations about the correlations are due to the non-availability or qualitative nature of results collected around the power stations. In all cases there is a high degree of confidence in the facility's ability to predict the relative performance of different coals and in some cases direct numerical predictions can be Made.

Sun Metals Corporation Pty Ltd (SMC), a wholly owned subsidiary of Korea Zinc Co Ltd (KZC) is a company formed to develop, construct and operate a zinc refinery, 11 km south of Townsville in North Queensland. The project opportunity exists because of on-going consumption growth for refined zinc metal, technological, environmental and economic obsolescence of existing zinc processing plants, and a prolonged ædroughtÆ of new zinc processing capacity under construction. The Project will utilise proven technology developed by KZC at the Onsan refinery in Korea. The Townsville Refinery has been designed to be the most environmentally-friendly zinc refinery in the world, and in particular to resolve the issue of secure, long term treatment of the ironbearing content of the zinc raw materials.

Traditionally, the development of a mineral resource project goes through a fairly set pattern of decisions from what commodities to search for; where to look; how to locate; what are the reserves; how can they be exploited with optimum returns for all stakeholders; where are the markets and what will be the price received; what financing arrangments? However, due to the unique nature of most mineral resource properties, the relative significance of individual parameters on the ultimate development decision will vary from project to project. Sensitivity analysis in its formal sense is most frequently related to the economic analysis of a project particularly in conjunction with the ultimate development decision making process, and acknowledges the uncertainty of the actual values with their impact on the corporate decision making yardsticks. In many cases, this analysis merely adds more values to confuse the decision makers who may well opt for some subjective rationale to overcome the numeric confusion. However, sensitivity analysis should be used more frequently to exploit the development dollar to its maximum, THROUGHOUT the phases leading to the development decision. It is essential to identify the critical inputs to the various decision tiers in a project as early as possible and direct the funds to ensure that these parameters are determined as accurately as possible. Examples are used to illustrate the need for an even-handed quantification of the parameters which affect the outcome of decisions en route to the final one while minimising the risk in making an optimum assessment in relation to development funds Available.

An extensive trial of laser-based survey and monitoring systems at Hillgrove Resources Kanmantoo Copper Mine in the Adelaide Hills, South Australia, has proved the capabilities of the system in monitoring rock movements on open pit walls. Initially, the trial involved deploying a Maptek I-Site 8820 laser scanner and the proof-of-concept Maptek Sentry software in the Nugent Pit to monitor ductile rock movements located up to 260 m away. The system was proven to be capable of monitoring various rock movements from 1.5 tonne rockfalls up to a 40 m high toppling wall failure. Data collected from smaller rockfalls was used to help build a database for Hillgrove’s rockfall management program. As part of the trial, the laser scanner was deployed to monitor a ramp movement event, as well as the toppling failure, adjacent to an IBIS slope stability radar. Both devices monitored the slump and the slowly developing toppling movements, with similar results. Although the radar was used as the successful ‘critical alarm’ device for the toppling failure, post-failure analysis showed the laser-based system to be capable of performing a similar role in the ductile rock regime; albeit over much shorter distances than the radar capability. A second laser scanner was deployed to monitor Kanmantoo’s Emily Pit in early December 2014, where it successfully provided critical alarm warnings for a block topple event. Sentry software, which takes advantage of Maptek I-Site 3D spatial imaging technology, was first released in November 2014 to meet industry demand for a cost effective, flexible system to detect movement. Sentry has now been re-launched as a fully transportable monitoring system. Deployed in a custom trailer, the system offers a power and communications module, cellular and Wi-Fi networking and a stable bollard for the I-Site laser scanner and Sentry software. This paper will present rock wall movement data from the Sentry trial and a subsequent two years of monitoring of the open pit walls at the Kanmantoo Copper Mine, at distances out to 750m. In addition, examples of remote geological mapping and small rockfall detection, using the laser scans, will be described. The Sentry system has proven to be beneficial for the continual improvement of slope monitoring and risk management at hard rock mines. The Rosedale Outfall Project utilised an earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machine (TBM) for only the second time in Auckland. Although the tunnel was excavated fully through East Coast Bays Formation (ECBF), the downhill gradient along with some unexpected areas of extreme water posed some significant challenges during construction.The Rosedale Waste Water Treatment Plant Outfall Tunnel project was commissioned in response to the growing needs of North Shore City, New Zealand. The outfall tunnel comprises a 3 km long segmentally lined tunnel and a 2.1 km buried marine pipeline, and discharges 2.7 km offshore. The capacity of the new outfall is 6 m3/s compared to the existing outfall capacity of 1 m3/s.Following previous project experience, and with the tunnel located along its full length in the bedrock weak sandstone/siltstone bedrock of the East Coast Bays Formation, tunnelling conditions were expected to be benign. However during construction six high inflow events were encountered, including a full face (3.4 m diameter) of Albany Conglomerate over a 48 m length of tunnel. This material comprised cobbles in an uncemented sand matrix, and inflows were recorded at over 25 L/s.This paper describes the design challenges on the project including the design of a steel fibre reinforced segmental lining for internal pressures. The specification of the machine is discussed including the modifications required to enhance the risk mitigation measures already in place. The ground conditions encountered are discussed and have improved the knowledge of the range of conditions that can be expected in Auckland.Despite the challenges presented during construction, excellent progress rates were achieved and the tunnelling was successfully completed ahead of program.

High solids brown coal slurries have been prepared with concentrations approaching those achieved with bituminous black coals. The high inherent water content and macroporosity of Victorian brown coals have been reduced in a controlled manner by chemical and mechanical means. The hydrophobicity of the coal surface has been increased sufficiently to reduce the tendency for swelling and water uptake. This together with densification has allowed the solids content to be progressively improved from 25% solids with raw coal to 65% solids with modified coals. Both raw brown coal and modified brown coal suspensions show shear thinning behaviour resulting in lower viscosities at higher flow rates. All coal suspensions displayed a yield stress once sufficient solids concentration was achieved. This yield stress can be used in the prevention of solids settling. Under simple shear mixing the network structure that provides the yield stress quickly breaks down to a low viscosity fluid with reduced yield stress and a pumpable consistency. The time necessary for structural recovery is in the order of days permitting shut-down and start-up of fuel delivery systems.
