Autogenous and Semi-Autogenous grinding has become an accepted method of reducing primary crusher product to micron sizes in a single or a two-stage grinding circuit. The elimination of secondary and tertiary crusher circuits and sometimes rod mills helps to lower overall operating costs and, in many instances, can make uneconomical projects viable. Selecting AG/SAG Mills have been rather a "hit and miss" affair over the years, but now with the many different types of tests available, accurate mill size predictions can be made, provided the test data is evaluated correctly. This paper endeavours to simplify the process of evaluating test data and sets down some guidelines for designers to follow when selecting AG/SAG Mills.

Some attempts were made to recover uranium from aqueous systems by using various biosubstances including microbial biomass. Of hundreds species of microorganisms tested, extremely high uranium absorbing ability was found in Pseudomonas stutzeri, Neurospora sitophila, Streptomyces albus and Streptomyces viridochromogenes. In parallel to this research, various kinds of biomass and commercially available crude drugs were screened to measure their abilities to adsorb uranium. Of these biosubstances tested, high uranium adsorbing ability was observed in chestnut skin, Comi fructus, Geranii herba and Chaenomelis fructus. From these results it may be considered that the uranium adsorbing ability of these biosubstances is due to the following; the uranyl ion is co-ordinated by the polyphenolic compounds such as tannin existing in the biosubstances. Along with these fundamental researches, we have developed a new adsorbent, the immobilised persimmon tannin (kakishibu tannin), for uranium and thorium. This adsorbent can accumulate 1.71 g of uranium per gram of the adsorbent (14 mEq/g), and the uranium adsorbing capacity of this adsorbent exceeds by several times that of commercially available chelating resins (2 - 3 mEq/g). We attempted to recover uranium from uranium refining waste water by using the immobilised persimmon tannin. As a result, the immobilised persimmon tannin can recover trace amounts of uranium from uranium refining waste water containing 10 - 15 ppb uranium with high efficiency. Almost all of the uranium adsorbed onto the adsorbent can be desorbed by washing with 0.05 - 0.1 M HCl or H2SO4. Thus, the immobilised persimmon tannin can be used repeatedly in the adsorption-desorption Cycle.

China is the largest coal-producing country in the world, while the geological conditions of deep coal mining are extremely complicated with high ground stress, high gas pressure and low permeability, which results in the difficulty of gas drainage and aggravation of gas explosion and coal and gas outburst disasters. Co-extraction of coal and gas is an effective method to eliminate coalmine gas disasters and realise the safe exploitation of coal and efficient gas drainage at the same time. This concept is widely accepted by the main coal-producing countries around the world, while the concrete definition of co-extraction is vague and not unified, and there is little accurate theoretical support for co-extraction of coal and gas, which makes it hard to determine efficient gas drainage methods correspondingly according to the features of coal seams in a comprehensive and systematic way. Based on theoretical analysis, laboratory test and field observations, basic thoughts and specific definition of co-extraction of coal and gas were put forward after analysing the occurrence characteristics of coal seams in China. We obtained the mechanism of mining-enhanced permeability and established the corresponding theoretical model, which is the process of fracture network formation through opening recovery of the original fractures and new fractures produced by unloading damage. Based on the core idea of ‘mining-enhanced permeability’, engineering approaches of ‘unloading by boreholes drilling’ for the single coal seam and ‘unloading by protective seam mining’ for the coal seam group were proposed to realise safe and efficient co-extraction of coal and gas. Meanwhile, combined with engineering practice, we put forward the construction principle of coal exploitation and gas drainage system in different coal seam occurrence conditions. Mt Kasi in Fiji is a high sulphidation style of gold deposit exposed at a high crustal level. Individual alteration centres are localised at the intersection of cross structures within a through-going structural corridor, the Mt Kasi Fault System. A two stage alteration/ mineralisation model suggests that much of the high sulphidation alteration is derived from the initial rapidly moving gas-rich portion of the hydrothermal fluid. The gradual cooling and neut-ralisation of hot acid fluids by mixing with oxygenated ground waters forms the characteristic zoned alteration assem-blages which grade from cores of residual silica through silica-alunite to peripheral clays. The liquid-dominated phase of the hydrothermal fluid brecciates the competent, altered rocks and deposits sulphide mineralise-ation within the breccia matrix. High gold grades occur in the matrix-rich breccias and decline from the hydro-thermal fluid upflow to outflow zones.CSAMT (controlled-source audio magneto-tellurics) geophysics has been used to define the geometry of the alteration centres while strike slip movement on the major structures accounts for the dilational structural environment in which the ore hosting breccias form.

Vibrating screens play an important role in the dry classification circuit of Gol-e-Gohar iron ore processing plant. This circuit was designed to classify the autogenous mill discharge and produce a suitable feed, with K80 about 450 ¦m, for dry magnetic separators. Three parallel vibrating screens produce more than 50 per cent of the separatorÆs feed. The efficiency of the magnetic separator is greatly affected by feed size distribution. In this work, the JKSimMet 5.1 software was used as an analysing tool to assess the flow rates and USIM PAC3 software as the simulation tool to control and optimise the vibrating screens. Samples were collected and the circuit was mass balanced. Then the vibrating screen was simulated and adjustment parameters such as cut-point, bypass and imperfection factor were determined. The product streams of vibrating screens can also be predicted.

The current genesis of pisolites and channel iron deposits (CID) has been defined in a way that presents CID as unique in the world. The published material on detrital pisolites mostly details the West Australian CID; most other global occurrences of iron-rich pisolites would seem to have an in situ genesis. An alternate theory for the origin of the Hamersley CID is suggested, involving an older greensand protore derived from volcanic ash and deposited on a glaciated Hamersley surface. This paper presents the author's observations, sampling and mapping after several years study and exploration for pisolites and CID in WA and in some locations overseas. It is not what one would call scientifically complete, and possibly asks more questions than it answers, but it is presented as a point for discussion.

Application of modern electronic components make it possible to design the new modular telemonitoring system incorporating the best features of the older systems,widely employed in Polish collieries, eliminating their weak points. Several new sensors and portable instru- ments for methane monitoring and early fire detection have been developed and tested in mining conditions.

The Department of Mapping and Surveying (DMS), the Australian Key Centre in Land Information Studies (AKCLIS), the Department of Industry Development (DID) and the State Government Computer Centre (SGCC) are testing a regional information network in northern Queensland. Several study sites have been chosen by different groups of participants. The members of each common-interest group share their data for the site. They can also access datasets supplied by other organisations that are not directly involved in the particular study being undertaken. The participants include state government departments, local authorities, fed- eral organisations and the private sector. The participants communicate with computer systems in Brisbane via Q-Net. Q-Net is a pilot State government tele- communications network, established by the Department of Industry Development. Q-Net uses the communications sat- ellite AUSSAT 1 as the primary instrument of data transfer. The Q-Net network is a star system, with a Master Earth Station in Brisbane acting as a hub for radial earth stations, located throughout Queensland.

Carrapateena is a copper-gold deposit hosted in a brecciated granite complex, located 500km North of Adelaide, South Australia. The deposit is being mined using the Sub Level Caving (SLC) Mining method at a rate of 4.25 MTPA. The Carrapateena SLC construction was completed in Q4 2019, with ramp up to a mine production rate of 4.25 MTPA completed within 12 months; ~ 6 months earlier than originally planned (OZ Minerals, 2020b). Traditional SLC designs have had issues with safety interactions on production levels, namely at the perimeter drive, as well as presented challenges for the application of automation due to frequency of activity required to achieve ring turnover rates. Safety in design provides an opportunity to learn from experience at recent modern SLC operations and by considering hazards early in the design process minimise exposure and improve safety, productivity and automation of mining activity. This paper discusses the work carried out during the Carrapateena feasibility study and optimised during project execution; to update the SLC production level mine design, with a layout known as the Carrapateena Crows Foot Level Layout. This paper focuses on: • An introduction to the Carrapateena Operation and mine plan. • An overview and historical challenges of traditional level layout. • An introduction to the Carrapateena Crows Foot level layout, including production level design parameters as well as development metres and productivity comparisons. • Outlines the benefits of the Crows Foot design for safety in design of SLC operations. Provides a roadmap for improved production efficiency, level operational philosophy and the application of automation within the SLC.

In recent decades, significant advances have improved the modelling techniques for predicting slope failure. Predicting failures is vital in open pit mining due to the significant risk posed to personnel and equipment from unstable pit walls. Failures not only cause harm and damage to people and equipment but also cause delays to production and subsequently increase operational costs. Coupled with improvements in modelling techniques, utilisation of advanced scanning systems, such as high-definition imagery from UAVs has enabled faster and more precise mapping and modelling. However, one key element required for accurate slope stability modelling and monitoring is the ability for mine geotechnical engineers to have an accurate understanding of the mineralogy and moisture content of slopes, in real-time. To address this challenge, research has been undertaken to utilise hyperspectral imaging across a broad spectrum, combined with high-definition imagery, and LiDAR to scan slopes for minerals and moisture content. In addition to accurately mapping mineralogy and moisture, the data must be collected autonomously and remotely to ensure ongoing safety. The results show that there are many direct and indirect benefits from this new technology, including the ability to monitor slopes at a safe distance and in real-time, improved accuracy of modelling, detection of risks, and improving the automation workflow for geotechnical engineers. The paper presents recommendations for the implementation of the technology in open cut mining environments.

Optimal drill and blast design is a process often neglected by many underground hard rock mines. This is even more important to the new mine where ring designs need to be implemented and refined in a short period of time. In today's environment where more and more mining is being carried out by contract specialists it is the co-operation between a principal and contractor, who are working towards a common goal, that achieves the highest quality end result. The development of drill and blast designs that cause minimal damage to the mine infrastructure is particularly important to Northparke's E26 Block Cave Mine, as it consists of a single extraction level which must survive intact for the life of the mine. The advanced undercut mining method implemented at Northparkes is fired in a sequence which protects the mine development from potentially damaging abutment stress. This paper details how blast designs will be optimised and sequenced to satisfy the conflicting objectives of maximum rock breakage inside the drill pattern and minimum rock damage outside the pattern.

Brazilian banded iron formation (BIF), known as ‘itabirite’, is the main host rock for iron ore in the Iron Quadrangle mines, Brazil. Their geneses are controversial and it is agreed that diagenetic, metamorphic and tectonic events, as well as weathering processes, were responsible for the iron concentration. In addition, it is understood that weathering processes are mainly responsible for reducing the original high intact rock strength, and for generating deep weathered profiles with low strength rocks commonly observed in Vale’s mines.A considerable amount of work has been done to correlate the macro and micro aspects of the itabirites as physical, chemical and geotechnical characteristics that directly or indirectly affect the intact rock strength; however, it is not yet clearly understood what effects the weathering processes have on the strength reduction of these rocks and its associated impact on pit slope stability. This forms a key focus of the lead author’s current research work.This paper presents a review of the geological, geotechnical and weathering characteristics of the itabirites, and early results for the evaluations of fresh itabirites from the PhD thesis research being undertaken by the authors at the Australian Centre for Geomechanics, School of Civil, Environmental and Mining Engineering, The University of Western Australia, sponsored by Vale SA.The results showed that to evaluate the density and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) correlation, not only the porosity but also the geological features should be considered, as they are responsible for data dispersion; however, the presented data suggested a trend that provides the confidence to develop advanced studies and a data population increment to establish proper correlations to support a reliable UCS method.CITATION:Costa, T A V, Dight, P M, Mercer, K and Marques, E A G, 2015. Bauxite residue or ‘red mud’ is a by-product of the Bayer Process, the primary process of alumina refining. Due to its high alkalinity and variable composition, its storage and disposal poses high environmental risks to water sources, surrounding ecosystems and human health. The high alkalinity (pH 12–13) is a significant factor in its classification as hazardous waste; to mitigate this, Australian refineries have integrated neutralisation processes into bauxite refining. Both sea water and carbon dioxide neutralisation processes are applicable. Multiple studies have demonstrated pH reduction from 12–13 to 7–10, depending on the method. The key advantages of CO2 neutralisation are that it allows for carbon sequestration and is more effective when utilised as a pre-treatment for recovery of metals, while sea water neutralisation is more established and has been integrated into two Australian refineries. This paper proposes the application of the bacteria Exiguobacterium oxidotolerans for bioleaching of iron from hematite in bauxite residue. The genus Exiguobacterium is characterised by its high levels of adaptability, halotolerance and alkaliphilic nature. E. oxidotolerans is successful at eluting Fe2+ from hematite via reductive dissolution, which complexes with oxalic acid produced during metabolism. This aquatic bacterium presents a novel process pathway for iron elution due to direct interaction of E. oxidotolerans with hematite via the cell membrane and operates within the pH range of neutralised red mud. The proposed mechanism is extracellular electron transfer, a microbial metabolic process where electron transfer is facilitated between bacterial cells and extracellular material. Currently this is being investigated for promotion of seaweed growth in coastal environments as soluble iron aids and fortifies colonies. This has potential downstream applications for cleaner iron and steel production. While theoretical, this paper explores the neutralisation, bioleaching and application of the Fe(II)- and Fe(III)-oxalate complexes formed.

Mining cycles have come and gone and with them there have been dramatic swings in the levels of interest and student entry into minerals-related education programs, hence graduate supply to the industry. So what is the problem? These trends will keep happening and the industry will keep on keeping on – or will it?This paper discusses recent trends in Australian minerals education programs and some international examples, together with some of the more recent initiatives taken by both the minerals education sector and the industry, such as the Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) and MEA. The real problem is that things will not just keep going the way they have over recent decades – there will come a time when there is no longer a supply of minerals academics available to provide the educational programs; and universities will simply shut down subcritical mass mining programs and invest in the much more lucrative programs such as commerce, law, medicine, etc. By the time this starts to happen it will be at least ten years too late for any last-minute reactive response by industry, if they were to try and avert such a consequence. International experience with mining programs bears out this scenario quite clearly.It is therefore timely for industry individual mines and mine management to take a much more strategic look at their role in the education sector. Sustainable mining also means sustainable minerals education – without one, the other will not function over the long-term. There is a pressing need for long-term strategic buy-in by industry into the education sector – not just for the good times, but also through the tough times. This means much more than a scholarship here or there, but includes such commitments as major industry-university research partnerships; collaborative recruitment initiatives and much more. The paper will discuss a range of such issues, problems and opportunities to address these important issues through strategic, comprehensive, long-term commitments by industry and equally significant and appropriate responses by the education sector. The flooding of open strip coal mines in the Bowen Basin and Hunter Valley Coalfields of Eastern Australia has the potential to soften the spoil and floor materials to produce “mud”. This mud can act as a slip plane or weak zone when spoil is dumped into it, resulting in geotechnical instabilities. Once mud has formed, typical handling techniques include its costly removal by mechanical means, or its isolation and capping.There are little data available on the moisture state and shear strength of the capped mud. To investigate the effectiveness of isolation and capping, research has been conducted using a large slurry consolidometer (150 mm in diameter by up to 410 mm in height) to simulate capping in situ. Once consolidated, the mud was subjected to shear strength testing in a direct shear box measuring 60 mm by 60 mm by about 20 mm high. The shear strength of the consolidated mud was compared to that of competent, fresh spoil, a mixture of spoil and mud, and to completely degraded spoil (mud alone).These results have been used as inputs in stability calculations using the commercial computer program Slide 7.0, which demonstrates the strong influence of consolidation of the mud on overall low wall slope stability. The performance of in situ, shallow water covers in controlling acid generation was evaluated at four recently decommissioned pyritic uranium tailings sites at Elliot Lake, Ontario, Canada. The tailings are acid generating, having a pyrite content of approximately five to ten per cent and a very low to non-existent alkaline buffering capacity. Adverse market conditions led to the closure of all operating uranium mines in the early- to mid-1990s, followed by rehabilitation and decommissioning of mine and waste management facilities. In order to control acidic drainage, all new and active tailings areas at Denison, Quirke, Panel, Spanish-American and Stanleigh mine sites were re-engineered to provide in situ submersion of these tailings under shallow water covers. The tailings impoundment dams were upgraded and reinforced or in some cases reconstructed, to minimise seepages and provide a minimum 1 m depth of water cover. With the exception of Stanleigh mine, which was closed in 1996 and rehabilitated during the late-1990s, the water covered Tailings Management Areas (TMAs) at other sites have been in operation for a period of six to nine years. The surface water quality at these sites is maintained at near neutral pH conditions by periodic addition of lime slurry to the established water covers. Additional treatment of effluent is provided as required to meet the discharge water quality standards. The performance of the established water covers at the sites was evaluated by analysing the annual equivalent limestone consumption data. The results were compared with the performance of an older, decommissioned Nordic TMA, which was rehabilitated using revegetation techniques. The water covers at these sites are performing as designed and acid generation has been reduced to low levels. Based on the total amount of yearly equivalent limestone required to maintain water quality in the water cover and at the effluent treatment plant, it is concluded that acid generation rate at the Denison TMA has reduced to less than 0.15 per cent of its pre-water cover conditions during normal operation and rehabilitation periods. In comparison to the revegetated Nordic TMA, the acid generation rates at Denison and Panel TMAs have decreased to less than 1.6 per cent of that at the Nordic TMA. The acid generation rate at the Quirke TMA was comparable or only slightly lower than that at the Nordic TMA because of its unique terraced cell configuration, having tailings in five hydraulically interconnected cells at different elevations. Historic acidity and oxidation reaction products, accumulated during normal operating and pre-water cover periods, are flushing from upstream locations to downstream cells, thus requiring much higher equivalent limestone additions for acid neutralisation and effluent treatment.

Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. Vertical retreat open stoping (VROS) is a variation of sublevel open stoping (SLOS) that has been introduced at Cannington to minimise the influence of subvertical geological structures during stope extraction. The first application of VROS is described, where structures within the stope resulted in a change in firing sequence and the extraction of two complete sublevels in a single blast. The use of electronic detonators is critical to the success of VROS and their application is described. Numerous benefits of using VROS have been identified and are described. To date, eight stopes have been successfully mined using VROS. In addition to the first application of VROS, two further case studies are described.

The question is posed because many engineers, tunnelling and other specialisations, frequently demonstrate an unwillingness to embrace marketing.
