The Mt Morgan Minesite in Central Queensland has been subject to both underground and surface gold mining operations since the late-1800s. The site is largely unrehabilitated and poor quality surface run-off and subsurface leachate is contaminating the nearby Dee River. The site is dominated by a large open cut, which now stores contaminated surface and subsurface run-off. Three models were used to simulate the complex hydrologic processes occurring at the Mt Morgan Mine: a rainfall-run-off model, a groundwater model and a storage behavioural model. Study results showed that the open cut is filling with water and will soon spill large volumes of highly polluted water to the Dee River on a regular basis if no remedial action is taken. This will result in a three-fold increase in pollutant load to the Dee River. Based on a consideration of water quality and quantity it was concluded that the first priority for future minesite water management should be the prevention of spills from the open cut. Potential management options to achieve this objective included surface rehabilitation, catchment diversions, modification of the pump-back system and controlled releases to the Dee River during floods. However, assessing the relative effectiveness of these measures required a thorough understanding of the complex surface and subsurface hydrology of the site. The results of a 100 year simulation of hydrologic processes revealed that previously favoured management options would be ineffective in preventing spills to the river. On this basis, a continuous treat and release strategy was proposed as the only reliable method of preventing future spills. The results of this study demonstrate that good environmental management decisions must be based on an understanding of the relevant physical processes and consideration of cumulative effects over an appropriate time scale.

Due to environmental considerations, mineral processing plants are increasingly recycling water to decrease the impacts of wastewater on environment and the depletion of fresh water resources. Industrial experience has shown that increasing recycling water in flotation typically negatively impacts the recovery and selectivity, especially in the selective flotation of minerals from complex sulfide ores. The major reason for the reduced selectivity is typically the inadvertent activation of sphalerite or pyrite by the heavy metal ions (HMI) in solution. These HMI are often produced during milling and flotation and absorbed by other minerals. In the normal flotation pH value range (8 - 10), these HMI are often in the form of precipitates or complex ions that may re-appear in solution or become active should conditions favour this. In this paper, microflotation, batch flotation and XPS surface measurement were used to investigate the use of HMI absorbents additions to the pulp to improve flotation selectivity of a complex sulfide ore. It has been demonstrated that HMI removal does improve flotation selectivity by facilitating more effective depression of the sphalerite. Microflotation and XPS surface measurements have shown that HMI absorbents compete with sphalerite to absorb HMI, and thus reduce the surface concentration of HMI on those sulfides. The practical use of HMI absorbents in complex sulfide ore flotation is also discussed.

Recent work on computerised mineral resource databases at the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences Limited has concentrated on the development of the GERM, REGCHEM, and MINLIT databases, and their integration in a Geographic Information System using MapInfo software on an IBM-compatible microcomputer local area network. GERM (GEological Resource Map) is a mineral deposit inventory with national coverage and more than 10 300 entries. REGCHEM (REGional Exploration GeoCHEMistry) is a database of stream sediment analyses from open-file mining company reports, containing more than 14 000 sample sites from the Coromandel and west Nelson regions. MINLIT (MINeral LITerature bibliography) is an annotated bibliography of literature on topics relating to the exploration and geology of mineral deposits in New Zealand, and includes more than 5000 entries for published books and papers, and unpublished mining company reports, university theses, and government reports. Master sets of GERM and MINLIT continue to be maintained on a VAX mainframe network but REGCHEM is operated only in the PC environment using the Microsoft ACCESS database management system software.

Ranger Uranium Mine, surrounded by Kakadu National Park is located in the Alligator Rivers Region (ARR) in the wet-dry monsoonal tropics, 250 km east of Darwin, Northern Territory. A trial landform (TLF), measuring approximately 200 m by 400 m (8 ha) was constructed during late 2008 and early 2009 by Energy Resources of Australia (ERA), adjacent to the northwestern wall of the tailings storage facility at the Ranger Mine. A collaborative research program involving the Environmental Research Institute of the Supervising Scientist (eriss) and ERA, has been underway to measure long-term (five to ten year) rainfall, run-off, sediment and solute losses, seepage and vegetation establishment on the TLF (Saynor et al, 2012; Lowry et al, 2014). This paper reports on bed load losses from four erosion plots built on the TLF. These were achieved by physically isolating approximately 30 × 30 m areas from the surrounding landform on three sides with sidewalls along with an open polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pipe on the downslope side. Each plot was instrumented with a range of sensors. Two plots, 1 and 2 were constructed on waste rock material, while plots 3 and 4 were constructed on waste rock mixed with approximately 30 per cent lateritic material. Plots 1 and 4 had tube stock planted in early 2009, and plots 2 and 3 were initially planted by direct seeding in July 2009 and were infill planted with tube stock in January 2011.CITATION:Saynor, M J and Erskine, W D, 2016. Properties of surface films on chalcopyrite and pyrite differ due to variations in the mechanism of oxidation of the two minerals. In the case of chalcopyrite the first step in the oxidation is the release of iron as ferric ions, which hydrolyse depending upon conditions prevalent in solution. The iron oxide/hydroxide layer formed by hydrolysis of ferric ions is quite porous and easily detachable from the surface of chalcopyrite. When the surface oxide layer is detached a sulphur-rich layer is exposed making chalcopyrite hydrophobic. The thickness and properties of the sulphur-rich layer determine its flotation response, both in the absence and presence of collectors. In the case of pyrite, on the other hand, iron is released as ferrous ions which require much higher pHs to hydrolyse. These ions remain adsorbed on the surface of pyrite making the surface hydrophilic. When the iron species are complexed with chelating agents such as ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, pyrite was hydrophobic. Siderite forms in the presence of carbonate ions, which might be present in several flotation systems. Siderite nucleated on isolated sites at the surface. The presence of such a precipitate is likely to influence the interaction of pyrite with various reagents thereby altering its flotation behavior. To determine the mechanism of oxidation, kinetics of oxidation of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using several electrochemical techniques, namely, cyclic voltammetry, polarisation and impedance spectroscopy. Floatability of the minerals was investigated by measurement of contact angles on mineral electrodes and by Halimond tube flotation. Impedance spectroscopy was especially useful for estimating various properties of surface film for both the minerals. Properties such as charge transfer resistance, porosity, and capacitances of the surface films on the two minerals are compared under several conditions of oxidation. These properties were found to be a strong function of the rate and the extent of oxidation.

Pyritic tailings from the Quirke mine waste management area in Elliot Lake, Ontario were subjected to long-term column leaching experiments in two PVC columns measuring 122 cm in height and 15.2 cm in diameter. At the end of the leaching experiments, the columns were taken apart and sampled at 5 cm intervals for quantitative mineralogical and geochemical characterisation. Each column is represented by a total of ten samples. Polished sections, prepared from the samples, were studied by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, electron microprobe and X-ray diffraction techniques. Mineral quantities were determined based on linear mixing models of whole rock and mineral compositions. Pyrite particle sizes were measured by image analysis interfaced to an electron microprobe. The tailings are coarse-grained (ie 96 per cent passing 75 ¦m) and composed of quartz, K-feldspar, muscovite and pyrite. Pyrite is homogenous and occurs as liberated particles displaying angular to subangular boundaries with strong dissolution features at the end of the leaching experiments. Based on up to 3518 particles measured in a sample, pyrite particle sizes range from 1.7 to 78.6 ¦m. Pyrite concentrations vary from 0.1 to 7.8 wt per cent, depending upon their location from the top of the columns. These correspond to pyrite losses of up to 99 per cent from their original level of 7.2 wt per cent in the upper half of the columns. Pyrite oxidation rates in terms of moles of pyrite oxidised per mole of pyrite per square metre per second were calculated from the effluent data and the measured pyrite particle sizes. The rates vary from 1.71+10-12 to 5.78+10-10 mole+m-2+s-1 within the 1.5 to 3.5 pH range for 10 ¦m particles. These results are comparable with the published oxidation rates at pH 2 where the dissolved oxygen is the only oxidant.

The New Zealand (NZ) Transport Agency’s Waterview Connection will complete Auckland’s Western Ring Route, a 47 km north–south motorway alternative to Stage Highway 1. The project is being delivered by the Well-Connected Alliance comprising the New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA), Fletcher Construction, McConnell Dowell Constructors, Obayashi Corporation, Parsons Brinckerhoff NZ, Beca Infrastructure and Tonkin & Taylor.The project involves construction of 5 km of new motorway, nearly half of it underground connecting State Highway 20 (SH20) to State Highway 16 (SH16). The underground portion of the project incorporates twin 13.2 m inside diameter (ID) tunnels 2.4 km long, each carrying three traffic lanes, one for north-bound traffic and one for south-bound traffic. The tunnels are being driven by a 14.46 m outside diameter (OD) 2400 t, tunnel boring machine (TBM) shield that was assembled and launched at the southern portal. It will be turned and re-launched at the northern portal for the return drive to the southern portal where it will be disassembled. This paper presents two major temporary works elements contributing to the successful launch of the TBM: the TBM assembly crane platform and the TBM shove frame and associated components.Tunnel boring machine shield assembly – crane platformThe TBM shield was delivered to site in subassemblies ranging in weight from 100 to 380 t. It was initially proposed to use a 750 t crawler crane sitting above the tunnel portal headwall to assemble and disassemble the TBM. However, this did not have sufficient capacity to allow the TBM shield to advance clear of the tunnel before disassembly commences. To reduce the crane’s working radius a temporary steel crane platform was developed that is supported on the side walls of the tunnel approach trench. This has enabled a smaller, less expensive, 600 t crawler crane to be used and will allow the TBM shield to clear the tunnel before disassembly.Tunnel boring machine launch – temporary worksTo launch the TBM a purpose built steel frame was required for the TBM thrust rams to react against. The shove frame had to be able to transfer the thrust loads from the TBM shield to the ground below and thrust wall behind. A range of potential thrust loads and jacking patterns were examined to develop the design load cases for the shove frame. The shove frame was used to launch the TBM at the southern portal and to re-launch it at the northern portal. Effective control of blast vibration and flyrock requires that significant factors be identified and quantified, that the blast be designed to ensure both blasting efficiency and compliance with applicable limits, and that the blast design be effectively implemented by field personnel. Significant factors contributing to ground vibration and airblast are: charge mass; distance and direction relative to the blast; drilling design: burden, spacing; stemming height and material type; hole diameter and depth; and initiation sequence and direction.In addition, airblast may be strongly influenced by shielding and meteorological conditions. Ground vibration is also influenced by the transmission characteristics of the ground and soil. Flyrock throw is determined by charge mass, burden, stemming height, blasthole diameter and depth. The contribution of each of the factors has been quantified and models developed to enable the environmental outcomes of blast design to be predicted. Environmental blast design is necessary to ensure compliance with regulatory limits and the implementation of æsafeÆ exclusion zones for flyrock clearance. This paper discusses the models used for environmental blast design and demonstrates the often significant effects that lapse during implementation of the design can have on predicted outcomes. In practice, drillers and shotfirers are sometimes confronted with situations that require modifications to the blast design to cope with the real site situation. Methods are presented that may be used by drillers and shotfirers to evaluate the effect of these modifications, the tolerances that must be reached during their work practice and checking procedures, and the consequences of their actions.

Pumped co-disposal of coal processing waste was promoted in the 1990-2000s as a low-cost highperformance alternative to tailings dams. In particular it would avoid high up-front capital for rejects trucks and dam embankments, and would produce a combined waste deposit with better geotechnical properties than either coarse rejects or tailings. Overall, the promise was not delivered; in particular, upon discharge the waste segregated by size, and operators responded by moving the coarser waste to contain the finer waste. In consequence, not only did design analysis lag behind construction, but some of the initial expectations persisted with the result that analyses did not fully represent what was occurring on the ground. After more than twenty years inspecting, designing and tending Co-Disposal Areas (CDAs), it is apparent that they are essentially upstream constructed tailings dams with some more favourable aspects but also a few unique quirks. Although waste management technology has moved on somewhat, the high cost of changing CHPP waste circuits means that most mines with pumped codisposal will continue to discharge mixed waste slurry into CDAs. It is therefore worthwhile to share some lessons in the hope of promoting sounder design, operation and rehabilitation. These include: • Discharged waste does not form a homogeneous wholly competent deposit but instead comprises materials ranging from sandy gravel to silty clay with the distribution determined by movement of the discharge and decant structures; • CDAs circulate and contain a lot of water; • As a result of the first two points, some areas of the CDA comprise saturated fine waste that is no different from tailings and, like tailings, often behaves in an undrained manner; • Seepage is inevitable and desirable because strength improves as water is removed. However, stability is strongly impacted by pore pressures and in design these need to be rationally rather than optimistically considered; • As CDAs are built to about 40m or higher, strength-deformation characteristics of the foundation become more important; • Even if geomechanically stable, CDAs will need covers to prevent salts and acids from reaching the surface; and • Erosional stability of the cover material(s) will probably dictate maximum slopes for rehabilitation.

If continuous mining systems are to be successfully applied in metalliferous mines then reliable models will be needed to predict rock cutting machine advance and tool wear rates for effective machine selection before mining commences. Many of the predictive models developed to assess cuttability in situ are over-simplistic. As a result they tend to be both site and/or machine specific. Nevertheless very detailed models have been developed for full face machines which are capable of accurate cuttability predictions in a variety of rock mass conditions and for a variety of machine and tool configurations. However, models to predict productivity and tool consumption for partial face machines are not as well advanced. There is a need to develop reliable models for partial face machines such as Roadheaders, the Robbins Mobile Miner and the HDRK-Wirth CMM, as these types of machine are likely to predominate in a mining environment. The paper outlines the current state-of-the-art for predicting cutting machine performance and the work being carried out within the Centre for Mining Technology and Equipment (CMTE), in collaboration with the Australian mining industry, to advance our capability in this area.

Bolivia, due to its turbulent past with a history of constant military coups, has given an image of complete instability to the foreign investor. The effects of this have been several fold, the major one resulting in a complete lack of exploration in modern terms since their revolution in 1952. What was overlooked by the foreign investor was the fact that revolution produced Agrarian Reform which is the foundation of the stability which Bolivia enjoys today. Another factor that is overlooked is the fact that its past history is one of vast mining fortunes having being made. Their political problems resulted in economic chaos in 1985 with an annual inflation rate of 26,000 percent. This resulted in the collapse of the government but the democratic process continued. Then came the so-called"South American Miracle" in 1986 when the government of Dr. Paz Estenssoro enacted an extremely harsh austerity program which consisted of the abolition of wage and price controls, the abolition of monopolies, the right to hire and fire, the weekly auctions of dollars and the free convertibility of currency which yielded a stable government with 8 percent inflation. This was followed by massive personnel reductions in the various mines and other industries.

While in some cases it is vitally important to measure the virgin stress in rock prior to tunnelling there are a number of cases where such stress measurement is really not required. The concept of having to have a number to put in a numerical model representing a continuum is often quite inappropriate. This paper discusses the cases when virgin stress measurement is required and the most appropriate means to measure it. The techniques discussed cover all of the overcoring systems, hydrofracture and borehole breakout measurements. It also covers the use of rock surface stress measurement, which is easy to perform and should be used to check for changing stress conditions. Unfortunately this technique has been ignored in recent times because engineers are addicted to numerical models requiring far field stresses rather than measuring the real values that exist where they matter – at the tunnel wall. A case is presented in which the measurement of surface stress in a tunnel boring machine tunnel enabled the far field stress to be determined in what must be the world’s largest overcore.CITATION:Gray, I, 2014. The blast furnace cohesive zone has a profound impact on hot metal productivity and quality, fuel consumption, operational stability and the lining life of the blast furnace. The high temperature properties of ferrous burden materials determine the configuration and location of the cohesive zone and have therefore attracted particular attention. While numerous standard testing methods are in use to assess the quality of ferrous burden materials for the blast furnace, these simple tests are generally conducted under fixed conditions, which often represent the extreme situations encountered by the burden materials in the blast furnace. Furthermore, none of these simple tests provides information on the high temperature properties of the burden materials, such as their softening and melting properties. CSIRO is equipped with a fully computerised testing facility to characterise the high temperature properties of ferrous burden materials under realistic conditions similar to those encountered in the blast furnace. This paper will first review the CSIRO softening and melting test method and then discuss the softening and melting properties of a variety of blast furnace burden materials, including sinter, pellets and lump ore, and their implications for blast furnace operation.

The Tui mine site is situated on the NW flank of Mt. Te Aroha, at approximately 400 m altitude. During underground mining operations two lead-copper-zinc ore bodies were exploited and processed on site. The legacy of the mining operation is a barren dam containing over 100,000 m3 of sulphide-rich tailings. The Tui mine site is arguably the worst case of environmental degradation resulting from past mining activity in New Zealand. Although the impacted area (approximately 4 ha) is extremely small by international standards, acid mine drainage (AMD) emanating from the abandoned tailings dam and mine adits has severely contaminated local streams and prevented natural plant recolonisation of the site for more than 20 years.

Indiscriminate surface disposal of coal waste in New South Wales has created a serious fire hazard and increased air pollution.A survey of numerous dumps, as well as particular investigations of one badly-constructed dump, showed that factors conducive to ignition and propagation of fires in waste dumps were high contents of combustible material (coal, pyrite, wood. paper. grease), size segregation leading to ready movement of air and moisture shape of the dump (e.g. protruding sections or porous junctions), high ambient air temperatures, bush fires, and even deliberate lighting.Control methods applied in the past tended to be haphazard and unsuccessful. Under Australian conditions the technique recommended for control of existing dump fires, based on experimental work, is to spray the dump with a chemical fire retardant (e.g. a 2 per cent solution of sodium tetra borate and ammonium phosphate), to cover the dump with a suitable soil, and to seal the surface with a I per cent solution of aluminium sulphate or sodium metasilicate. The recommended method of dump construction to prevent fires is to level and seal the site, to construct a firebreak around the dump area, and to build a rectangular dump with minimum size segregation and compacted surfaces.

The Blackwater Coal Mine is a modern open cut operation using large draglines for over- :)urden removal and shovels, loaders and trucks to mine and haul coal to the crushing and coal ?reparation plant. Operations at the mine are described in sequence following through overburden removal to the railing of product coal from the mine site. The close operating connection between the mine and washery, which results from the blending of raw coal into clean product via the qashplant bypass system, is stressed. Some features of special interest at Blackwater Mine, such as land reclamation and slope stability,are outlined.

Camel Creek Mine operated by Lynch Mining Pty Ltd is located 65 km west of inghain and 160 kin north west of Townsville in North Queensland. (Figure 1). The Camel Creek gold mineralisation was discovered in mid-1987 in an area previously known for its tin workings. Mining commenced in January 1989 after an oxide reserve of 1.2 million tonnes @ 2.1 g/t gold had been delineated. The first gold pour was in May 1989. The mine developed into a medium sized open cut operation, with full site facilities. The initial mining rate was 500 000 tpa utilising run-of-mine (ROM) heap leaching to recover the gold. By the end of 1990 the wider orehodies were mined and efforts were focused on the narrow orebodies, of width typically less than three metres. Smaller earth moving equipment was employed to selectively mine the narrow orehodies leading to a decrease in the mining rate to 200 000 tpa. The Red Gold deposit (80 000 tonnes « 3.0 g/t to 18 in vertical) was mined in mid-1990 and ore was hauled approximately 8 kin to the Camel Creek heap leach operation. The ore was hauled in a dedicated campaign after being stockpiled. The cost of dedicated ore haulage ensured that only the more exceptional of the remote orebodies could be mined in this manner. The Golden Cup orebody, some 20 km from Camel Creek, was too distant to permit ore haulage. However, this prospect contained sufficient gold (initially 90 000 tonnes @ 3.0 g/t) to warrant the installation of a small mobile adsorption facility. Construction of the second heap leach operation commenced in late-1990. Gold production commenced in early April 1991. Mining of several smaller orebodies remote to the second heap leach facility has been undertaken and further mining is planned. This paper outlines heap leaching practice at Camel Creek Mine and summarises the success of the Golden Cup heap leach.

Since the advent of plate tectonic modelling, the Ramu-Markham valley has been thought the site of a classical island-arc/conti- nent collision zone. In this interpretation the units south of the Markham Valley are held to be island are / micrcontinental mate- rial accreted to Australia and those north of the valley are thought to represent a separate Finisterre island-arc terrane. Recent remapping by the Geological Survey of Papua New Guinea shows: (1) there is no terrane boundary along the Ramu-Markham valley (2) the Finisterre Volcanics are probably part of either a fore-arc sequence or oceanic plateau obducted onto a microcontinent/ volcanic-arc composite terrane, accreted to the continental Australian plate. A new tectonic model is proposed for northern PNG and involves: (I) Eocene to Late Oligocene subduction below a microcontinent remote from Australia to produce the Sepik are and related intrusives, the Finisterre Volcanics (fore-arc or possible oce- anic plateau), together with the Alife blueschist. (2) obduction of the Sepik arc in Late Oligocene-Early Miocene times over the advancing Australian plate. This resulted in crustal melting, some of the products of which are the Mid- dle to Late Miocene Akuna and Bismarck intrusive complexes of the Maramuni arc. (3) obduction of the Finisterre Volcanics began in Early Pliocene times and continues today. (4) post-Middle Miocene mineralisation is the result of melting after obduction of the Sepik microcontinent.

This paper examines the practical limitations that affect the measurement of stress in rock. As most rock stress measurement is conducted through the invasive process of drilling a hole in a rock mass, the nature of the rock and its response to being drilled form the basis of the stress measurement process. The prime techniques to measure stress down a borehole are to conduct hydraulic fracturing and its variant hydrojacking, overcoring, and the examination of the borehole wall for breakout or tensile fracture. It is also possible in some circumstances to use the sonic velocity within the rock mass as an indicator of the stress situation. Other structural indicators of stress such as joints, faulting and intrusions are useful but may not reflect the current stress situation within the rock mass. The variability of stress within the rock mass also needs to be considered as it is quite unusual to have a monotonic stress situation throughout any rock mass. The outdated concept of measuring the far field stress in a few measurement for use in a numerical model is quite dangerous. It is essential to make multiple measurements and to generate an understanding of its distribution in some form of model before stress can sensibly be incorporated into underground design.
