Brand se Baai, on the North-Western Cape Coastline of Southern Africa, is the site of the Namakwa Sands Limited Heavy Mineral Sands Mining Operation. The mine is a 14 000 000 tonnes per annum open-cast strip-style mining operation using truck and excavators to mine the sand. The orebody consists of relatively unconsolidated sands reworked by fluvial, marine and aeolian mechanisms. The total orebody includes three primary ore types, namely the Red Aeolian Sands, the Dorbank (a hardcap layer) and the Orange Feldspathic Sands, which forms the bulk of the resource. Mine planning and scheduling is done using a 50 m + 50 m variable bench height system with three primary bench heights. The Aeolian and Dorbank each have a bench that varies with their thickness of up to a maximum eight metres and the Orange feldspathic sand, a standard bench height of eight metres. For a number of years Namakwa Sands used a complex 2D, Datamine Based, macro system to perform the resource evaluation and mine design. As the mining operations expanded it became clear that a complete system redesign was required to cope with the increasing operational pressures coming to bear on the old system. The biggest challenges facing any replacement system are the sheer scale of the mining operation (16 km long and 7 km wide resulting in a minimum of 30 000 individual 50 m + 50 m mining blocks), the size of the geological data files (up to one gigabyte) and representing the benching system accurately (as the benches follow the topography and are not horizontal). In addition to these large-scale issues, the ability to run multiple mine design scenarios was required, an aspect which the old system was unable to perform adequately. Based upon these primary difficulties, a new business process was developed which required a complete rethink of the mine design methodology as well as the creation of a new system to deplete the resource model, produce monthly reconciliation evaluations and create a ultimate pit limit based on the operations mining cost model. Using a system based on the Earthworks Mine2-4D Mine Design and Scheduling System (with its mine design and scheduling specific tools), as well as a small, customised program, massive time-savings have been made. It is now possible to run several life of mine scenarios in the same timeframe that a single life of mine run took under the old system. This paper will present the methodology and business decisions behind the new Namakwa Sands system, and detail the restructuring and development used to deal with the large data set sizes and long processing times inherent in the old system. Future enhancements to the system that will make it more generically applicable to open-cast mining scenarios will also be dealt with.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

Cannington Mine has been developing through paste backfilled stopes since the year 2000. These paste drives have been used as either production drill accesses or long-term bypasses. Prior to this study, the ground support requirements for each paste development cut were: an initial 50 mm layer of fibrecrete, weld mesh bolted with 2.4 m split sets, followed by a second coat of 50 mm fibrecrete. Both layers of fibrecrete and the layer of mesh were to be installed before the next cut could be bored and fired. This support regime proved successful at Cannington, however, the total cycle time for each cut was lengthy due to the installation and curing times associated with each layer of surface support. In an effort to reduce the cycle time a study was carried out, with the aid of RocScience’s Phase2 numerical modelling software. The modelling reviewed all of the parameters controlling the stability of a newly excavated development cut. The parameters studied included the early strength of fibrecrete, the ground support load capacity, and the strength of the paste fill masses which varies depending on the cement content. As a result of the study, the ground support standard was revised. The revision has significantly decreased the cycle time as well as fibrecrete consumption, all the while maintaining the safety of personnel and equipment.

An improved technique for the quick and accurate measurement of the weight and centre of mass in the horizontal plane of large machines has been developed. On-site weighing of large plant such as bucket wheel dredgers is an important part of the commissioning procedure. The results from the weighing assist in determining the stability of the machine and also enable confirmation of the structural weight distribution used for stress analysis at the design stage. In this paper the techniques previously used for weighing are reviewed and the sources of error using these methods examined. A full descrip- tion of the current technique and procedure is given explaining how the measurement system comprising strain gauge load cells, displacement transducers, wind speed and direction sensors, data logger, computer and software was developed to enable quick and accurate measurements to be made. Proposed modifications to software necessitated by the replace- ment of current measuring instrumentation and computer are discussed. A typical example of measurements from the weighing of a large dredger, illustrating the accuracy of the new technique is given and the calibration technique used to check the accuracy of the force and moment measurements is explained. An outline of how the results are used to certify the machine for operation is given.

The depletion of the richest ore deposits and the increase in number of mining projects involving deposits with complex mineralogy, higher competence and lower grade has led to an eminent need for improving understanding on multicomponent behaviour in mineral processing. One particularly relevant case is the ball milling of itabirite iron ores fed to the processing plant of Minas-Rio operation in Brazil. Dealing with the two main mineralogical components of the ore, namely hematite and quartz, the operation faces some challenges to improve understanding on how the two components behave in the process. Mathematical models have showed potential to give support in this task, but its applications to describe this type of industrial-scale grinding is still missing. The present work demonstrates the application of a multi-component ball mill model to simulate a closed ball mill circuit with hydrocyclones using the commercial software Integrated Extraction Simulator (IES). Model was calibrated on the basis of bench-scale tests and industrial surveys. Multi-component simulation results are then compared to those considering a single component in the feed, demonstrating the value and great insights that can be achieved by using the former in optimising plant operation.

The GPM Gold Operation has been employing an Albion Process™ plant at its Sotk (Zod) gold mine in Armenia since 2014. Long term data from the operation is now being published for the first time. The data presented includes concentrate throughput, as feed to the Albion Process™ plant (tonnes per day), sulphur grade in concentrate (% S), total sulphide sulphur oxidation in the Albion Process™ plant (% SOx) and gold recovery from Albion Process™ plant residues (%). The data provides a basis for evaluation of the effectiveness of the commissioning, ramp up and operation of the Albion Process™ plant. Notwithstanding the impact of a slower concentrator commissioning than expected, the plant demonstrates Series 1 behaviour on McNulty ramp up curves, indicating successful commissioning and fast ramp up. Interrogation of the data and operational experience indicates that this successful operation is a result of a process that is flexible, robust and stable, one that was designed well based on solid testwork results and pilot plant trials during the study phase undertaken by Glencore Technology and Core Resources, and where the local operators were provided with appropriate training in operation of the plant. "An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation. Over the last decade (2005–2014), a total of 439 significant deposits of gold and base metals were found in the world. Twenty (or 4.6 per cent) of these deposits were in the Pacific/South-East Asia (Pacific/SE Asia) region. In terms of contained metal, the region accounted for 1.6 per cent of gold and 13.8 per cent of copper found in the world. With regard to nickel and zinc/lead, the region’s contributions were insignificant.Over the same period, the Pacific/SE Asia region accounted for 6.6 per cent and 12.6 per cent of all gold and copper exploration expenditures in the world respectively. After adjusting for by-product credits, unreported discoveries and likely growth in resource, the unit discovery cost for the region was US$199/oz (compared to a world average of US$50/oz). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$55/oz and US$25/oz respectively. The region’s unit discovery cost for copper was US$0.036/lb (versus a world average of US$0.040). For comparison, the unit discovery costs for the previous decade were US$0.026/lb and US$0.008/lb Cu respectively.The region’s mediocre discovery performance doesn’t reflect its distribution of known mineralisation. Some countries within the region have a very good endowment per square kilometre.It is noted that the intensity of exploration (and resulting success) would be boosted if governments provided a more mining- and investment-friendly business environment and generated better precompetitive geological data sets (to identify new exploration targets and boost the country’s perceived mineral prospectivity). A multivariable regression analysis of a decade of data from the Fraser Institute’s mining company surveys found that a ten point increase in the Policy Perception Index or a 0.1 point increase in the Mineral Potential Index could boost (in the short term) exploration expenditures by 1.9 per cent and 2.7 per cent respectively. 3D photogrammetry is a powerful tool for data capture and interpretation, utilised at all Australian underground MMG sites. In personnel constrained mines, 3D photogrammetry can free up personnel time, improve data quality for resource modelling, as well as benefit other mining departments.At Rosebery one of the challenges faced by geologists was no longer data capture but, rather, avoiding paralysis by analysis from the sheer abundance of information currently available to the department. Although the data had been interpreted, the structural model was cluttered; the geological block model was not incorporating any geological domains captured by 3D photogrammetry, nor was it being utilised by other departments such as geotechnical engineering.The geology department is now focusing on utilising all the interpreted data gained from each photograph heading into an uncluttered, easily understandable model for geologists and other mining departments.Our solutions involve integrating the Leapfrog modelling suite into the process, streamlining the structural model, tailoring the data interpretations for future updates of the block model and training other departments to improve utilisation of the interpreted data. Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. The Gladstone region, as one of the most industrially intense regions in Australia, uses significant quantities of fresh water. Awoonga Dam, situated on the Boyne River, is the only major source of water in the region. The current typical annual usage is 53 GL (Porteous, 2006) and approximately 80 per cent of the water is used by heavy industry (Gladstone Area Water Board, 2004). Until relatively recently, there has been ready and easy access to raw water for industrial use. The recent drought, which resulted in severe water restrictions in 2002 and 2003, emphasised the importance of water for a dominant industrial region like Gladstone. Although now in the process of changing, the typical contractual arrangements in the past have provided little financial incentive for efficient water use. From research undertaken on potential water reuse opportunities, several key questions have emerged related to water management in an industrial region such as Gladstone. This paper highlights these key questions, presents findings from recent regional strategies and assesses the potential for water reuse. Even though there is no clear-cut financial incentive for reusing water, there could be stronger regional and risk mitigation drivers for doing so. Initiatives to incorporate adaptive capacity through collaborative industrial synergies would allow for robustness and resilience in water security, leading to long-term sustainable water management across the Gladstone region.

No new goldfields have been found in the Witwatersrand Basin for over 60 years, and one consequence of this is a long-term decline in gold production. Exploration throughout this period has been based on the placer model that infers alluvial transport of gold grains and then sedimentary sorting in the basin; however, there is no viable source for so much alluvial gold and no single sedimentary setting that hosts the gold.An alternative genetic model can now provide a quantified explanation for the source of the gold, and it does not rely on alluvial gold processes. The hydrothermal model can easily explain the source of the Witwatersrand gold as being derived from the background gold at parts per billion (ppb) level throughout the Kaapvaal craton of South Africa. This gold is involved in metamorphic processes, available for solution in metamorphic fluids, and hence may be transported whilst dissolved in fluid into the Witwatersrand Basin. The hydrothermal model warrants consideration as it can explain the source of gold, the large alteration halo in the goldfields, the mineralogy, and especially the gold-carbon association.Working on the premise that if one model (placer) is not giving the desired results (discovery of new goldfields), then it may be prudent to consider alternatives. Application of a hydrothermal model to guide exploration would place importance on large and small early structures in and around the Witwatersrand Basin; it would also emphasise the geochemical nature of potential host rocks (especially C and Fe) rather than their sedimentary origin.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. Much of our knowledge of the behaviour of underground coal dust explosions has been derived from less than full-scale experimental explosions in facilities as small as 0.25 m diameter pipes. Although a substantial body of research has been undertaken in larger galleries approaching the size of full-scale modern mine roadways, there are still questions regarding the scaling of results to full-sized roadways in modern coalmines. Questions also surround the issue of comparing or scaling results between smooth and rough walled galleries, round and rectangular galleries and galleries with differing wall thermal properties due to different materials of construction.This paper will examine the influence of gallery size, cross-section area and wall roughness and thermal properties upon the characteristics of a coal dust explosion. Most mining operations, including iron ore, maintain a focus on continuous improvement and asset optimisation in their operations. As all the unit operations in the Mine-to-Mill value chain are interdependent, available technologies that address efficiencies across the value chain are once again in the spotlight as companies are driven to improve productivity and maximise mine site profits to increase return on capital invested. Core to continuous improvement is the need to understand the baseline and impact of changes to the process. In this paper, we discuss some of the critical attributes in the Mine-to-Mill process, including their influence on productivity and cost, the need for direct measurement and areas where they should be applied. Many initiatives can be considered to improve Mine-to-Mill processes. Mining operations are planned and executed based on designs and models to achieve the operation's objectives. However, there are many variables in the different parts of the value chain, such as blasting, material handling, crushing and screening. Therefore, measurement of the key attributes establishes the baseline for Mine-to-Mill (or Pit to Plant) performance, which is necessary to understand the impact of any proposed improvements to the process design and execution and monitor the outcomes on an ongoing basis sustain the improvements that have been implemented. This paper focuses on two types of measurement – blast movement and particle size of materials through the Mine-to-Mill process. Several innovative technologies and control loops are readily available to measure these attributes and assist operations to improve productivity and mine site profits. The size of the tangible benefits, which can flow from measuring and optimising fragmentation and blast movement, provide a remarkable return on the investment. Realising these benefits needs a focus outside conventional operation silos as a successful Mine-to-Mill project requires a multidiscipline approach across all the silos in the value chain. Required technologies are available; adding the necessary ingredients of communication and co-operation by all concerned across the silos will ensure the benefits are realised.

An investigation was undertaken to critically analyse the use of fibre reinforced shotcrete (FRS) for a variety of applications in large diameter shafts. Those applications included the use of FRS with or without the addition of subsequent rock bolting in the temporary support cycle prior to the installation of a permanent lining, most likely cast in situ concrete or as the final lining medium.Numerous authors have considered the early re-entry and strength characteristics of FRS in recent years. The current study has investigated the practical application of the recommendations of many leading authors in an endeavour to establish practical and acceptable risk-assessed procedures for the use of FRS for rapid, safe, efficient and cost-effective shaft sinking.Shaft sinking is regarded as a specialist and potentially higher risk activity due to the confined work environment, exposure to ground conditions and a high degree of manual handling associated with getting materials to the sinking face. The use of robotically applied FRS as a primary lining in shaft sinking has significant safety advantages in reducing manual handing associated with mesh safety support and bolting, as well as reducing direct exposure to ground conditions.The study involved both field testing and a literature review. The study established an initial set of criteria for the use of FRS in the development of large diameter shafts and demonstrated a number of scenarios where the technique of robotically applied FRS provided significant safety and cycle time advantages. In June 1989 a diving cruise of the French submersible Nautile has been carried out on the North Fiji basin spreading ridge. The objective of the cruise was the geological and geochemical study of the active spreading axis and associated hydrothermalism processes. This operation was the third cruise of the French-Japanese STARMER project following two cruises of the R/V Kaiyo in 1987 and 1988.INTRODUCTIONAfter the Seapso III cruise (Auzende et al., 1986, 1988a and b) of the R/V Jean Charcot in 1985, the objective of the Kaiyo 87 and 88 cruises was the complementary Seabeam mapping of the North Fiji Basin spreading axis between WS and 22'S and a systematic sampling (water and rocks) and deep towing (TV and photos) at about every ten milles along the axis.

Japanese pig iron production in 1973 registered about 90 million tons. As clearly seen from the productivity (2.04 t/m3/D), and fuel ratio (494 kg/t-pig), the Japanese steel industry has maintained quite high levels of efficiency in blast-furnace (BF) operations. Among the many factors which have contributed toward these high levels of efficiency, the use of high quality coke is very important. The Japanese steel industry imports about 85% of its metallurgical coals from various countries of the world, including Australia. The effective use of these metallurgical coals of various origins in accordance with their re- spective properties is most essential for maintaining coke quality. This paper describes coking properties of various metallurgical coals and blending techniques based on these coking properties, in relation to the specifications of coke quality required for efficient BF operations. This paper also describes briefly new technology for expanding the scope of the use of coking coals.

With the rapid development of the Chinese steel industry, the strong demand for iron ores has led to huge imports of various iron ores from all over the world. As a relatively new force in the iron ore world and an important raw material supplier, Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) has achieved an annualised production rate of 100 Mt of iron ore fines. Typical blends were designed to simulate sinter blends employed in Chinese steel mills, and to determine sintering properties and metallurgical performance of blends comprising FMG Rocket fines in pilot sinter pot. It is shown that the sinter of typical blends comprising 15 - 20 per cent rocket fines possesses excellent sintering properties and metallurgical performance. With Rocket fines substitution for competitor ores in a typical customer mill blend comprising fully imported fines, the sinter productivity and tumble index increased from 1.45 t/m2h and 62.0 per cent to 1.54 t/m2h and 64.0 per cent, respectively, while attaining similar reducibility index and reduction degradation index at lower solid fuel consumption.CITATION:Zhu, D, Guo, Z, Ooi, T C, Chun, T, Pan, J and Young, J M, 2013. The Yara Siilinjärvi plant is located in the central part of Finland. Siilinjärvi is Western Europe's only apatite mine and annually it produces 1 Mt of apatite concentrate, which creates approximately 10 Mt of tailings.At the beginning of 2017, tailings handling in Yara Siilinjärvi was brought to a new era, by replacing the conventional tailings storage facility with a new tailings treatment plant. The new high-density tailings disposal system with two paste thickeners increased the percentage of solids in the slurry from 45–48 per cent to 66-68 per cent, making it possible to deposit as a paste. This extended the life-span of the current tailings storage facility by 15 years; from 2020 to 2035.This paper presents the storyline of the Yara Paste Plant Project. The project began with laboratory testing and then progressed to pilot-scale thickening and beaching trials. After some successful pilot trials, the final process design was implemented. Process instrumentation and automation played a key role in the project, as the aim of the Yara Project was to make the plant operable remotely from the main plant. An advanced control system is needed to maintain process stability and the desired operation point in various operational circumstances.This paper discusses the results from the Yara site since the new tailings treatment plant commenced. Some of the main points are that the operation has been running consistently with an underflow solids content of 66-68 per cent, with average beach slope angles of 3.5 degrees in the tailings disposal area. This control system additionally facilitates minimum use of flocculant, which delivers significant savings to operating costs. Robust thickener operation also leads to the trouble-free high-density pumping and high availability of the Paste Plant. During the first year of operation, the plant’s availability has been very good, over 97 per cent.Currently, the plant still has its own staff working there during the daytime, but the Paste Plant is now already operated remotely during the night shifts. Geometallurgy is inherently multidisciplinary and it gains its power to deliver improved outcomes for the minerals industry by bridging silos between disciplines. This cross-disciplinary approach unlocks value, identifies (and avoids) value destruction and provides a pathway to better implementation of an energy efficient and sustainable minerals industry. Despite this promise, we argue that the cross disciplinary approach also represents the greatest threat to the success of geometallurgy. Some key cross disciplinary issues identified are:Geometallurgy has so far evolved in the technical sphere, mainly by collaborations of geologists and metallurgists. Consequently, in many cases the business dimensions and value have not been incorporated. Financial and risk evaluation viewpoints need to be assimilated into the geometallurgical paradigm. In fact, until such measures are integrated into practices, the value cannot be fully demonstrated.The historical and current efforts on geometallurgy have been highly focused on improved sampling and measurement of geometallurgical properties or appropriate proxies. This work has been driven by professional and academic geologists and metallurgical engineers. It is notable that mining engineers (who are critical in the value delivery of geometallurgy through changed planning approaches) have so far been at the margins, or absent. The construction of valid three dimensional (3D) geometallurgical models raises some important organisational, mathematical and geostatistical considerations. The enhancement of resource models to account for geometallurgical aspects must be managed carefully if the full value of geometallurgical thinking is to be realised.The use of 3D geometallurgical models to change business decision making and practices is the real nub of the problem. We believe sophisticated scenario based evaluation methods are required if the potential impacts of spatial rock properties on processes further down the mining value chain are to be realistically evaluated. Such changed practices require ‘whole of value chain thinking’ to embed this change into the business in an ongoing way.Because profitable geometallurgy demands changed approaches to business decision-making and also organisation of the firm (radically changed in some cases), the senior executive viewpoint must be incorporated into the language and thinking of geometallurgy. This is unavoidable if the establishment of a geometallurgical approach to project evaluation, development and operation is to be successful and sustained.A powerful analogy for the problem faced by geometallurgy is the transformation of safety culture in the mining industry in the past 20 years. We argue that, as in the safety revolution, explicit models, cultural change and management of the ‘soft’ dimensions of the problem are pivotal to success of geometallurgy. In light of this, we propose a model (‘the Geomet Curve’) that gives a framework and pathway for geometallurgy in seven steps. The implications of this model for technical and organisational steps required at different stages are discussed.
