The Apeketon Business Hub in Lihir, Papua New Guinea, emerged in 2019 through a partnership between Australian Business Volunteers (ABV) and Lihir Gold Limited (LGL), a subsidiary of Newmont Corporation. This development was driven by a shared vision for the Lihir gold mining operation to further enhance opportunities for the local community and strengthen the economy’s resilience post-mine. At its core, the business hub serves as the epicentre of ABV’s operations in the region. It includes a drop-in resource centre which provides the community with mentoring and consulting services, and access to a range of impactful workshops facilitated by ABV’s local staff and skilled volunteers. These workshops focus on local Lihirians but are open to the entire community, including Newmont employees. We design and continually refine Apeketon Business Hub support programs and offerings driven by community priorities, building trust through long-term relationships, and working side-by-side on real-time challenges. We offer three core programs to different levels of the community, from individuals and families to start-ups, large corporations, and landowner groups. There is significant demand for the support services provided by ABV, with over 350 Lihirians participating in our workshops over the 2023 calendar year. One of the hub’s core offerings is the Family Money Management Program, which addresses crucial challenges faced by Lihir households, particularly in terms of financial resilience. The program takes a comprehensive approach, assisting families in long-term planning and developing skills to effectively manage the income they derive from their employment with LGL and other enterprises. Significantly, the program also addresses financial stress, a factor often associated with domestic violence (Fox et al, 2002). By empowering women and promoting joint financial decision-making, the Family Money Management Program fosters a culture of savings and improved financial management, ultimately enhancing economic resilience within the community.

"OceanaGold’s Didipio operation has been in operation for three years. Integral to the flow sheet design is a flash flotation circuit treating a portion of cyclone underflow, consisting of an Outotec SK-500 flash rougher and an Outotec TC10 flash cleaner and a SB-2500 falcon treating flash rougher concentrate to recover fine free gold.Flash copper recovery has been holding steady at 60 per cent, while flash gold recovery at 50 per cent. Gold recovery from the gravity circuit is 22 per cent, bringing the overall flash plus gravity gold recovery to 72 per cent.Operation of the flash rougher is mainly by pulp level control. Control of copper grade in the flash cleaner is mainly controlled by air inflow and flash cleaner pulp level control drives copper recovery. A mine project combines vast amounts of information from various disciplines including but not limited to geology, mining, metallurgy, technology, environment and economics. In many cases, all relevant information is not fully shared between all disciplines. Thus, project performance (technical, economical and sustainability) may be evaluated on basis of insufficient information resulting in non-optimal decisions, project execution and risk management. Advances in computing power and simulation software enable various data sets to be incorporated in a single digital platform enabling more efficient and transparent data sharing. In addition, linked data sets and simulation can support assessment and optimization of the project as a whole rather than focusing on optimization of individual events. CSA Mine, named after the nationalities of the mines first owners being Cornish, Scottish, Australian, is one of Australia’s deepest and highest-grade copper mines. A combination of the modified Avoca method and shrinking was a standard practice where production rings were fired against and bogged to waste fill. This method resulted in dilution and involved rehandling of waste material to refill the bogged stopes in the Western region and the QTS Central. The introduction of pre-charging blastholes using a wireless initiating system (WebGen™) has enabled CSA to design and fire stopes in reverse. This involves the use of a pre-charged Temporary Rib Pillar (TRP) against the waste fill material in a previously mined stope. The temporary pillar reduces dilution and improves conventional bogging as material is blasted towards the drawpoint rather than towards the waste fill material. Additional drill, prep and blast re-work is reduced or completely removed as rings can be charged prior to, in conjunction with, or after, charging of the slot. This is a safer practice as the charge crew spend no time working adjacent to a brow or open void. A TRP trial was conducted in the western orebody at CSA. The risk of exposure to a brow or open void while charging underground, and the bogger rehandling of waste material was successfully eliminated. Once reverse stoping was established in modified avoca stopes at CSA, two TRPs were implemented in challenging ground conditions in the QTS Central region. The TRPs were utilised in a retreating four-way intersection to extract a central diminishing pillar to close the level out. The ore recovered in this stope provided 5 per cent of CSA’s copper for the year. Without pre-charging with a wireless initiating system, two 5 m pillars totalling 6936 t of ore at 7 per cent either side of the stope would not have been recovered. CSA has implemented the practice of reverse stoping in modified avoca stopes using TRP for ten stopes since the successful trial. The development of additional blasting techniques enabled by precharging with wireless initiating systems is currently underway in the QTS North orebody at CSA Mine.

Safe, efficient production is a common objective for all large open pit mines. Despite comprehensive policies, procedures and regulations aimed at protecting workers, several people die each year in mining equipment-related collisions. The limited sightlines of heavy equipment operators coupled with difficult operating conditions are major contributing factors to the majority of mining equipment collisions. Off road haul trucks are the most common type of machinery involved in surface accidents. These vehicles represent the primary target for improving safety performance by mine operators. Although several commercial products have been introduced to address these issues, none have achieved significant market acceptance. The current collision avoidance solutions lack integration with onboard fleet management and equipment health systems. To achieve acceptance in industry, any collision avoidance system must offer high reliability, minimal false alarms, and value for money. With these criteria in mind, this paper will examine the pros and cons of the various technological approaches to collision avoidance in an open pit mining environment. The unique global positioning systems (GPS) and camera-based proximity detection solution on offer from Modular Mining Systems will be described. This solution uses intelligent filters to minimise false alarms. Tight integration with fleet management provides context information to enhance warnings and enable back-office near-miss analysis. Available today, this combination creates a practical solution to improve the situational awareness of heavy equipment operators, at a compelling price point. Future directions for maximising heavy equipment operator situational awareness will also be examined.

The problems associated with equating calculated and measured properties of explosives with blast results are examined. The results from six full-scale test blasts in a limestone quarry are described. The purpose of the full-scale trial was two-fold, i) assess the role of varying aluminum levels (10% maximum) in a given explosive in terms of blasting performance, and, ii) find correlation between calculated, as well as measured properties of explosives and the resulting blasting performance. Each blast consisted of 36 holes, initiated with short period detonators in a staggered 3-row 2.4 m x 2.7 m (burden x spacing) pattern. Each 75 mm diameter borehole with no subgrade contained on the average 22 kg of 65 mm diameter cartridged explosive. The bench height was 6.3 m, with an average collpr of 1.2 m. The calculated and mgasured properties of explosive included, strength, detonation and explosion pressure, VOD, plate-dent depth, underwater bubble and shock energy, and the total energy efficiency. Each blast was instrumented to measure detonation velocity, initiation sequence, muck pile motion by means of high-speed photography and blasting vibrations. The post-blast measurements included photogrammetric survey of muck pile for size distribution on surface, muck pile profile, as well as the extent of backbreak. The results showed that the overall blasting performance of the explosive in question was nearly commensurate with the level of aluminum in the explosive, and there was excellent correlation between the underwater test properties and the blast results. The study also exemplified the need for more extensive post-blast analysis than is usual practice, for quantitative assessment of blasting performance of explosives and providing the necessary data-base for calibration of blasting models.

Results of investigations on adsorption and desorption of CO M CH and a mixture of the two gases are described.4 Results showed that even when the equilibrium conditions contains 50% Co and 50% CH4, the gas emission in the initia' stages will contain as much as 80% CH . 4 The temperature has a small effect and so also particle size for 1.4-11.2mm. The ratio of CO2/CH gases adsorbed in coal samples depends upon t4he equilibrium pressure and this ratio decreases with pressure. Results of field tests support laboratory studies.

The foundation of effective leadership is communication. You can have all the leadership theories, models and training you want, but in the end it is all about leaders talking to, listening to and understanding the point of view of those below and above them.The foundation of effective safety is peoples’ behaviours. Every incident, every near miss and every safe act comes down to what one person does and how that affects themselves and others. We tend to focus these behavioural considerations on the people at the ‘coal face’, those most in harm’s way. But it is the individual behaviours of everyone in the organisation, particularly those at the top, which are just as (if not more) important. The foundation of effective safety leadership in the mining industry is that it starts at the top, with the individual behaviours of leaders. The behaviours of each and every leader will be reflected in their teams. And where their teams are made up of leaders, these leaders will pass these behaviours on to their teams and so on. It’s the sum total of what people see their leaders do and what they do as a result, that creates the ‘culture’ of the business – and it’s this culture that makes or breaks how safely people work.

"The Phu Kham copper-gold operation in the Laos People’s Democratic Republic (PDR) is owned and operated by Phu Bia Mining Limited. PanAust Limited holds a 90 per cent interest in Phu Bia Mining Limited, with the remaining ten per cent held by the Laos PDR Government.The original 12 Mt/a copper-gold concentrator at Phu Kham commenced production in April 2008. An incremental improvement program resulted in a number of circuit changes being incorporated by 2011, including conversion of conditioning tanks to flotation cells and the installation of a Jameson Cell cleaner scalper. In 2012 the Phu Kham Upgrade Project was commissioned to increase throughput to 18 Mt/a. In April, 2013 the Phu Kham Increased Recovery Project was commissioned to maximise performance by debottlenecking the plant IsaMill™ regrind and cleaning capacity.With the variable mineralogy of Phu Kham ore, control of the c concentrate regrind circuit is essential in terms of achieving effective liberation to maintain concentrator performance. On a routine basis laboratory regrind signature plot data is compared with daily surveys of the operational IsaMills™. More extensive surveys are also conducted to determine size distribution on a mineralogical basis and the effect of fine regrinding on pulp electrochemistry and flotation performance. This paper provides a review of the operating performance of the Phu Kham IsaMills™ with regard to power draw, feed and product size distribution, feed per cent solids, mineralogy and pulp electrochemistry. Pyrrhotite is the predominant gangue mineral at Renison comprising about 60 percent of the sulphides in an average ore blend. It exists as two crystal structures - monoclinic and hexagonal. Monoclinic pyrrhotite is the slowest floating of all minerals but is ferromagnetic and hence recoverable more efficiently by low intensity magnetic wet drum separators than flotation. This paper discusses the installation and commissioning of four 0.915 m x 3.0 m, 0.1 Tesla permanent magnet, wet drum separators prior to sulphide roughing flotation. Planned circuit and process control modifications to better accommodate magnetic separation into Renison's flowsheet will be Discussed.

"Gas management has always been a major concern for the ventilation officer of any gassy mine. With an increase of mining depth and gas content, there is a great demand for the development of in-seam drilling sites where boreholes can be drilled for the pre-drainage of gas prior to longwall operation. The ventilation and gas management in the drilling site therefore becomes a critical component of mine safety. In this study, advanced computational fluid dynamics technology was adopted to investigate the aerodynamics of gas emitting from the drilling site and boreholes during normal drilling and, in the case of a sudden gas inrush, from the borehole. In addition, the impact of different ventilation controls on gas removal in the drilling site was investigated. Modelling results indicate that gas accumulation zones could be formed if the ventilation system fails to deliver sufficient airflow to the drill site, especially when a sudden gas inrush from a borehole occurs. The configurations of brattice, layout of ventilation tubes and the gas emission rate all have a significant effect on the gas distribution. Due to variations in site-specific conditions, it would be desirable to conduct modelling studies to assess the effects and efficiencies of a ventilation design for the varying environment on-site before carrying out drilling practice. "Screw press technology is an innovative approach to tackling the growing pressure to conserve water and minimise the environmental impact of mineral tailings disposal. The principles of the technology have been known for a considerable period of time in non-mining applications such as water treatment, wastewater (municipal sludge), as well as in the paper and chemical industries for dewatering solids, particularly those containing clays.The screw press represents a viable niche technology for filtering fine and high-clay tailings, without the prior thickening stage, and is capable of producing a filtered product that is sufficiently consolidated and dry enough to provide a product suitable for conveying and dry stacking.The Ishigaki screw press was introduced in 1990 and key features are: continuous operation and excellent availability low wear to plant acceptable flocculant consumption low carbon footprint and low noise levels fully automatic.These features lead to simpler plant layouts, easier maintenance, smaller spares inventories, reduced wear, smaller footprint and overall lower capital and operating costs.The amenability of a particular tailing stream to treatment by screw press technology may be determined by test work. Two pilot plant studies are described where this technology has been applied in the mineral industry being flotation tailings from a rare earth (RE) mineral concentrator and coal tailings. Two commercially available through-the-Earth (TTE) communications systems were evaluated at an active underground longwall mine in West Virginia. One system utilises magnetic field (H-field) antennae while the other system utilises electric field (E-field) antennae to achieve communication. A large portion of this mine is overlain by an inactive gas-oil field composed of densely spaced wells. This feature provided a unique opportunity to determine the impact of cased wells on both TTE technologies. The following communication modes were investigated: surface to underground, underground to surface, underground to underground and real-time two-way communications. Standard deployments of the TTE systems using the manufacturer’s recommended procedures were able to achieve clear communications between underground and surface locations under certain circumstances. As a result, the design and deployment that will optimise TTE transmissions are unique to each system and to the specific area of the mine. This field study was conducted as a part of a larger multisite evaluation of available TTE systems in an effort to determine their operational sensitivity. The content of this paper will identify recent developments in walking dragline technology including utilisation of planetary swing dnves, high voltage generators, unique bucket configurations and increased machine capacity resulting from changes to front-end geometry. The benefits to mine operators for increased performance, reduced cost, improved availabilities, simplified maintenance, and ease of operation will be identified and discussed. The feasibility and application of the technology as a retrofit on existing equipment will also be covered in the presentation. All the technology being presented has been recently commissioned into operating Australian mining operations and will be presented from a practical, as well as theoretical perspective.When the Marion 8000-Series Dragline was introduced in the early-1970s, it quickly became the industry standard for high productivity and availability. Features like outboard bearing propel, four-chord deep section boom and the over/under fairlead have proven their superiority in thousands of hours of round-the-clock operations in a variety of tough digging conditions worldwide. Marion has currently sold 31 of these 8000-Series Draglines into the Australian mining community.

The Asanko Gold Mine in Ghana started processing ore from the Nkran pit in January 2016 at a production nameplate of 3 Mt/a. The flowsheet is a conventional SAG, ball mill and pebble crusher (SABC) with gravity-gold and carbon-in-leach (CIL) recovery. The nameplate production was comfortably achieved within 3 months, so much so, that it was clear the SABC circuit was capable of processing more than the downstream section of the plant. Consequently, a program of de-bottlenecking was initiated to rectify volumetric capacity constraints. This program was later referred to as ‘Project 5 Million’ (t/a) or P5M. Having completed the de-bottlenecking exercise, it became evident that the SABC circuit could not reach 5 Mt/a solely on hard rock from Nkran. The new challenge was therefore to increase the capacity of the milling circuit through a focused comminution initiative that would address the following: geometallurgical treatment plan; upfront fragmentation requirements; installation of feed and mill monitoring equipment; and integration of a knowledge-based control strategy. This paper takes the reader through the various measures implemented to increase the milling rates and to create a stable/ sustainable control philosophy. A major component of Sydney’s new South West Rail Link project is the Hume Highway Underpass (HHU), an 80 m long twin track mined tunnel excavated at a depth of just 5 m below the pavement of the Hume Highway; one of Australia’s busiest road corridors.In order to ensure a safe and efficient construction of the underpass without disruption to the Hume Highway traffic, design of the HHU required specific focus on the prediction and control of ground movements. This paper describes the design and construction solutions adopted in response to these challenging constraints. The South West Rail Link (SWRL) project involved construction of a rail line to service new residential areas in south-west Sydney. The 11 km rail line is conveyed through a short tunnel at shallow depth where it crosses beneath the eight lanes of the Hume Highway. The underpass location is one of the most heavily trafficked within Sydney’s motorway network.The New South Wales Roads and Maritime Services (Roads and Maritime), as the owner of the highway asset, had the responsibility of managing the risks to the highway and traffic associated with the tunnelling project from the pretender stage through to completion. This paper considers the primary risks and mitigation measures employed, including geotechnical investigation, and development of appropriate construction constraints and concept design of an extensive real-time survey system to monitor pavement deformation during the tunnel works.The geology comprises fresh Minchinbury Sandstone in the tunnel invert and side walls, and variably weathered Bringelly Shale in the haunch and crown. Few tunnels have been excavated in these rock types in Sydney, and there is little information relating to the in situ stresses and stress-relief deformations in these materials.During tunnel construction the monitoring data indicated unexpected surface heave of up to about 24 mm. A multiparametric back-analysis of the deformation data is presented, which provides information on the deformation mechanisms and key geotechnical parameters, including rock mass modulus and in situ stresses.The approaches and methodologies developed for the SWRL underpass were effective in maintaining the safe operation and traffic capacity of the highway throughout the construction period, and the analysis of the monitoring data provides a useful reference for similar future projects, or projects constructed in similar ground conditions.CITATION:Clarke, S J and Walker, C S, 2014. "Hanwha Mining Services was approached by Glencore Coal to provide a series of (trial) demonstration blasts at its Clermont coalmine. The intent of the project was to trial a bulk explosive product that would be able to provide sufficient energy for the ground type encountered without production of post-blast fume. Three blasts were loaded using the patented XLOAD bulk explosives with a density of 1.00 g/cc. XLOAD bulk products are water resistant explosives that can be loaded at densities much lower than traditional (generic) water resistant heavy ammonium nitrate – fuel oil (ANFO) or pumped blends with significantly reduced risk of fume. In addition, these products have detonation characteristics that generally deliver a higher heave partition than conventional bulk products and hence improve muck pile looseness and digability.The priority key performance measures included the absence of fume from blasting, being at least cost neutral and providing similar if not improved shovel dig rates. The design for the initial blast took a conservative approach to ensure the key blast outcomes of fume control and fragmentation were achieved.The second blast used the same pattern dimensions as the benchmark bulk product used in this area to provide a cost neutral comparison with the benchmark products that had been used over the prior six months. This resulted in a 20 per cent lower powder factor than would have otherwise been used. To test the suitability of XLOAD, this shot was slept for over two weeks between loading and firing in geology where the sleep time is typically kept to a few days to minimise the fume risk.The third blast utilised a slightly larger drill pattern to push the capabilities of XLOAD and provide a cost neutral comparison between the trial product and the traditional benchmark products. All three blasts were fired with no fume observed, no recordable incidents and good fragmentation. Shovel productivity from all three of the trial blasts was excellent with higher average instantaneous dig rates being recorded (average six per cent improvement against the instantaneous dig rates recorded for the benchmark blasts).Citation:Rock, J and Bambrook, K, 2016. "As underground mines increasingly face the challenge of maximising production without losingfocus on safety excellence, the ability to predict the eff ectiveness of mine seals and stoppings andthe identifi cation of defects plays an increasingly important role in mine ventilation management.While technologies for sample testing installed seals provides signifi cant assurance, the difficulty of conducting tests in operational environments, combined with the production impact of destructive testing procedures, has led to the development of a new method for non-destructively testing ventilation control devices (VCDs). This paper addresses the challenges of in situ testing and reviews the approaches previously employed to verify the quality of VCD installations. It then describes a new testing methodology jointly developed by Whitfield Minerals PTY Ltd and Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) and the range of tests that have been carried out in the laboratory, above ground, at trial underground sites and in active coal mine operations. Although this is a new approach to testing underground VCDs, the method employs recognised testing equipment in a new application. The aim of the new non-destructive technology is to not only verify the thicknessand therefore overpressure rating compliance, of new VCDs, but to allow mine operations t oidentify and locate defects in installed VCDs without causing damage to the material structure.Currently it is difficult, time-consuming and costly to carry out physical sampling and testing ofevery VCD. Therefore, a reliable and accurate means of non-destructively testing concrete andplaster seals in situ will provide substantial operational and safety benefi ts to the underground coal mining industry."

Gold dissolution can be achieved with a number of complexing ligands, all with varying degrees of stability. Processes based on the use of halogens have been known for many years. Beside providing the necessary complex- ing role, the halogens under the appropriate conditions are very effective oxidants for gold. Of the halogens, the gold iodide complexes are the most stable in aqueous solution. Iodine can establish the desired oxidation poten- tial for oxidizing gold, and unlike chlorine and bromine, the oxidizing potential of iodine is mild enough to avoid the oxidation of impurity constituents like metal sulfides. A series of experiments to investigate the fundamental electrochemistry of gold in different halide solutions was performed. Cyclic voltammograms of gold in the presence of 10-2 M chloride, bromide and iodide, respectively show that for a given potential the rate of oxidation is much faster in iodide solution than in either chloride or bromide. An overlay of linear sweep voltammograms for the anodic oxidation of gold in iodide and the cathodic reduction of iodine species on gold provides an effective method for examining the dissolution of gold in iodideftodine solution. The dissolution rates obtained from both electrochemical and actual leaching results are compared. Optimum leaching conditions are analyzed in terms of the iodide/iodine concentrations. Conceptual processes for the recovery of gold and iodide and the regeneration of iodine are discussed.
