The possible use of combined (flotation/magnetic separation and magnetic separation/flotation) technologies involving the new flotation reagent systems for upgrading the iron ore concentrates, low grade manganese products and beneficiation of graphite-bearing dusts from integrated iron-and-steel works has been shown. It has been found that the absence of magnetic flocculation phenomenon worsens the reverse cationic flotation of oxidised iron ore concentrates and direct flotation of low-grade manganese products which require the use of modifiers possessing the flocculating properties. The synergetic mixtures of polymers have been proposed to be used as modifiers, ie polyacrylamide (PAA) with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyacrylamide with industrial lignosulphonates (LST)

A description is given of an investigation into the feasibility of using controlled recirculation of warm exhaust air into the cold intake air of underground mines during winter. Canadian mines can experience inlet air temperatures of minus 30 ¦C and less, requiring them to pre-heat their intake air. The use of controlled recirculation would reduce the inlet air quantity and thus reduce heating costs which exceed $1M on some mines.

"Extensive literature surveys, research in the project environment and personal experiences both within and consulting to project teams have revealed some consistent ‘people factors’ that contribute most to ultimate project success. Outside of purely technical and business case issues, there are a small number of leadership characteristics – probably only ten – that if correctly applied can positively leverage a team’s impact on project success.Of the top seven project success characteristics that were consistently highly rated in a recent study, five of them were around leadership. The authors have focused on this topic, noting that good leaders need to display the following traits:passionate commitment to deliveryconsistent modelling and reinforcement of correct values and behaviourfocus on managing relationships well and energising teams and individualscarefully clarifying project vision from front-end loading stages onwardseffective decision making.Not every project manager can and does practise these behaviours all of the time, but being aware of them and receiving training or facilitation in improving their application of these skills can equip project managers with the essential tools to markedly improve their own performance and that of their teams.This paper draws upon experiences in the field and provides lessons – both good and bad – to illustrate. As well as examining leadership traits, the way in which a leader can establish, organise, motivate his or her team and ultimately lead them to success is examined. A number of hydrometallurgical treatment methods are being developed to extract copper from chalcopyrite flotation concentrate including microbial leaching and ferric sulfate leaching. However, chalcopyrite is difficult to process efficiently by hydrometallurgical methods as it exhibits slow reaction kinetics. Comparative leaching tests do not always satisfactorily explain or predict observed copper recovery, acid consumption, or differential leaching of minerals. This is especially true when reactive gangue constituents are present. The aim of this study was to determine how the leaching regime (microbial versus ferric sulfate) affects both the extraction of copper and residue mineralogy. Chalcopyrite flotation concentrate was leached at 30¦C and 65¦C using a pure culture of Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans and a mixed consortium of thermophiles, respectively. In addition, the concentrate was leached at the same temperatures using 0.1 M ferric sulfate. Microbial leaching of chalcopyrite extracted more copper than ferric sulfate oxidation of chalcopyrite at 30¦C, demonstrating that the microbes promoted the solubilisation of copper at this temperature. This result was confirmed by leach solution analyses and residue analysis using quantitative X-ray diffraction (QXRD). More chalcopyrite was oxidized with ferric sulfate at 65¦C than at 30¦C (as expected). QXRD confirmed that pyrite reacted during ferric sulfate leaching at 65¦C but was relatively unreactive during lower temperature leaching. The high ferric ion concentration in the ferric sulfate leach at 65¦C led to significant precipitation of jarosite. This phase was only detected in small amounts at 30¦C in both the microbial and ferric leached residues. Sulfur also precipitated in the ferric leaching at 65¦C whereas no sulfur was detected in the microbial leached residue. Quartz was a relatively unreactive mineral phase regardless of the leaching medium and temperature. QXRD analysis indicated the residue mineralogy differed with different leaching regime.

Regular monitoring of surface deformation over mine sites is important for providing updated information to managers regarding geotechnical risks related to ground instabilities. This is particularly true in cases where unexpected or accelerating movement patterns are observed, as these trends may have implications related to worker safety within active mining environments, as well as continuity of ongoing operations. InSAR is an active remote sensing technique that uses radar satellite imagery to precisely measure ground movement. This technology has started to become a standard tool for monitoring surface stability in many different sectors, including underground and open pit/cut mining applications. In recent years the launch of satellites that collect radar imagery on a more frequent basis, coupled with advances in InSAR processing techniques, has improved both the extent to which movement patterns typical of mining operations can be characterized and the temporal scale on which results can be reported to geotechnical departments. As a result of these developments, InSAR monitoring can now better meet the operational needs of mine sites. An overview of the more recently launched satellites that have a particular relevance to the monitoring of mines is provided, along with an explanation of the InSAR tools that are the most valuable to mine managers and geotechnical engineers. First, broad differences between high resolution X-band imagery and low resolution (but freely available) Sentinel imagery are discussed. Second, the various InSAR tools and their particular applications for different types of mine sites and operations are covered, which include fast delivery deformation maps for short-term reporting, multi-interferometric algorithms for longer-term analyses and rapid movement tracking (RMT) for emergency monitoring or high-risk situations. The ability of the technology to resolve 2D and 3D movement is also touched upon. Practical examples of InSAR application over a variety of mine sites will be presented, as well as surrounding hazards including landslides, to illustrate how InSAR can help provide geotechnical engineers with a picture of surface stability over the full mine site and surrounding areas to help manage risk. A series of low shock energy water resistant emlulsion based explosives have been developed by combining inert materials, such as Perlite P500, into the formulation. The material handling, water resistance and explosive properties of these mixtures were determined as a function of inert additive type, density, charge diameter and emulsion base. Of the emulsion bases tested Emulite produced the best and most stable low density mixtures ranging in density from 0.8 to 1.35 g/cm3 producing velocity of detonations (unconfined) ranging from 3000 to 5500 nits. The mixtures could be detonated successfully at these densities at diameters as low as 25mm. Low shock mixtures formed by combining Emulite with Perlite P500 were successfully trailed at the Cadjebut zinc mine in Western Australia. The performance of the explosive, at three densities, was monitored using both continuous and point to point VOD techniques. The fragmentation produced by the blasts were compared by photographic analysis. During this trial the low shock emulsion mixtures were shown to be as effective as the currently used explosives (packaged emulsion) at a significantly reduced cost.

There has been much progress on the issue of acid drainage over the past 20 years; however, significant challenges remain. The International Network for Acid Prevention (INAP) is attempting to address them by globally coordinating acid drainage information sharing and research. INAP pursues three branches of activities: it links AD research, practice, and people; it organises, sponsors, and participates in regional workshops as a forum for technology transfer; and it instigates and funds key acid drainage research projects. Through these activities INAP is helping the industry deal with what is arguably its most serious legacy issue.

Flotation science and technology are related to three major sub- processes which are organized in a hierarchical structure as shown in Fig. 1. The basic sub-process is the chemical process which affects the attachment of air bubbles to mineral particles. In particular, the chem- ical process is related with the adsorption of surface active sub- stances at the gas-liquid, liquid- solid, and gas-liquid-solid inter- faces. This field has been most intensively explored in flotation research. The second domain in flotation research is concerned with the mineral particle to air bubble attachment sub- process in the system. This sub- process represents the dynamics of particle and bubble encounter where the contact angle and the induction time, determined by the surface chem- istry of the system, are among the most significant parameters. This sub-process can be referred to as the micro-process as against the third sub-process, or the macro-process, which corresponds to the integral behaviour of the system. Two other sub-processes are integrated into the macro-process in which they may not reveal themselves explicitly in the details. The third sub-process does not entail surface-chemical or physi- cal events any more, but it represents them all inclusively. To represent this sub-process we use mathematical equations, called models. Only in some simple or simplified cases can the models be solved exactly to find out the behaviour of the flotation system in which we are interested. Digital

Ion flotation involves the adsorption of ionic species, in association with surfactant molecules, at the surface of rising gas bubbles, for the purpose of recovering and concentrating those ions. The objective of this study was to optimise the ion flotation process using a heap-leach liquor, containing gold cyanide, and the surfactant cetyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB). The aim was to minimise the surfactant reagent dose, maximise the throughput of feed liquor in the process, and satisfy the dual constraints of a high gold recovery and a high volume reduction factor. Development of a first order model of the ion flotation process formed the theoretical basis for the test program procedure and the interpretation of the results. Batch tests were used in order to determine the ultimate recovery curve for the heap leach liquor-CTAB surfactant system. The results indicated that a surfactant dose of about 0.083 g/l would be necessary in order to achieve a satisfactory gold recovery. Continuous tests were then performed on a small-scale pilot plant at the Newcastle Laboratories. The optimum result achieved was a gold recovery of 85 per cent, a volume reduction factor of ten, and a feed throughput of 2.3 m3/m2-h. Recent work also indicates that very much higher volume reductions can be achieved using a larger diameter vessel. The improvement may be a consequence of a reduction in wall effects and hence an improvement in foam drainage.

The general structural features and the principal mineral relationships of the Black Star ore body, Mount Isa, Queensland, have been described in several previously published papers. But particular reference may be made to the work of Grondijs and Schouten, whose examination of over 200 polished sections revealed some remarkable features in the process of ore deposition. The observations by the present authors are based upon the study of a smaller ·set of specimens complementary to those examined by Grondijs and Schouten and are intended to elaborate certain aspects of the mineral relationships, more particularly those affecting the ore-dressing processes.The work described applies to the primary sulphide ore only, and to the present milling practice of fine-grinding and selective flotation.GEOLOGICAL FEATURESThe Black Star is one of several economic mineral concentrations in the Mount Isa series of thinly bedded carbonaceous shales, which are considered to be of preCambrian age. The nlineralization is apparently connected with pegmatite intrustions located within some miles of the ore bodies, and has been Gontrolled in the main by major folding of the shales and by a shear system which follows approximately the strike and dip of the beds. Zinc-Lead-Silver (Zn-Pb-Ag) mineralisation at the George Fisher Mine occurs in multiple structurally-disrupted stratiform orebodies hosted within a mid-Proterozoic sequence of calcareous siltstones and variably pyritic shales (e.g. Valenta, 1994; Chapman, 2004). The geological model for the mine has been constructed based on a large number of stratigraphic domains which have been defined using recognised patterns of the constituent rocktypes, aided by recognition and mapping of K-rich tuff marker beds (TMBs). The continuity of these domains has been affected by the presence of several sets of faults which are extensional in the plane of stratigraphy, leading to the common occurrence of fault-related stratigraphic gaps in drillholes. Recent improvements to the detail of the geological model have led to significant improvements in the head grade of ore at George Fisher, with relatively small loss of metal. Recognition and accurate logging of these domains requires a high level of knowledge and expertise amongst mine geologists. In order to aid this process, the George Fisher mine installed a Minalyzer CS (core scanner) on site, with the aim of using high resolution X-ray fluorescence (XRF) geochemical data and core photography to increase the speed, accuracy and consistency of the site geological logging system. This contribution describes some preliminary results from a research project aimed at using the Minalyzer CS XRF data to perform high-resolution rocktype identification and domain boundary mapping in drillcore at George Fisher. WMC Resources Pty Ltd û Copper Uranium Division operates the large underground Olympic Dam Mine at Roxby Downs, South Australia. These operations mine and process the ore to produce refined copper, uranium oxide, gold and silver. In mid-1996, the company committed to the Olympic Dam Expansion Project (OEP) to expand production from 3.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (85 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal) to over 9.0 million tonnes per annum of ore (over 200 000 tonnes per annum of copper metal). Along with the increase in the ore production capacity of the underground mine and the surface ore handling and processing facilities, expansion of the backfill system was required. The target backfill placement rate was 2.0 million cubic metres of backfill per annum which was to be predominantly delivered as cemented aggregate fill (CAF). This paper discusses the engineering activities undertaken to assess and change the method of designing the required strength of fill exposures. In addition, the operational changes that were introduced to achieve the required fill quantities and the mix designs to meet the specified strengths, including the use of alternate binders, are discussed. This work resulted in a large increase in the fill placement rate and a reduction in the overall unit cost of fill.

The sulphide ores of the Kalgoorlie goldfield have long been looked upon as' refractory, involving special metallurgical treatment. For many years two kinds of treatment have been practised-(l) wet treatment, including fine grinding, amalgamation or concentration of the free gold, concentration of the sulphide minerals with subsequent roasting and cyanidation, and cyanidation or bromo-cyanidation of the residue from the concentrating operation; (2) dry-crushing of the ore and roasting the whole of thecrushed ore, amalgamation of the gold in the calcine during fine grading, followed by cyanidation. The wet treatment was advanced a stage further when, in 1929, the Lake View and Star Ltd. adopted large scale flotation. As a consequence, however, further metallurgical problems were introduced. This paper covers the investigation, ,of one of the most prominent of these problems.Flotation preceded by strakes was satisfactory to a point.The flotation concentrate consisted largely of auriferous pyrite and tellurides, and the gangue minerals in the concentrate were practically barren.Several sources of loss of gold values were, however, found to be associated with this circuit, viz.-(a) There was the loss of gold in the flotation tailing.(b) Loss by dusting during roasting of the flotation concentrate.(c) Loss of gold in the cyanided residue.

The Waterview Connection will complete a strategic Auckland motorway route linking the south, west and north. The project will include 2.1 km of ‘undrained’ driven tunnels, 500 m of drained cut-and-cover tunnel and tunnel portals.The project is aligned beneath a stream valley of Oakley Creek, which is incised through alluvium and in places overlain by landfill, between Mt Albert volcano and a ridge formed in alternating sandstones and siltstones. The resulting topography, geology and hydrogeology of the tunnel alignment are complex.The Assessment of Effects required estimation of the likely settlements resulting from the tunnel construction and assessment of their effects on the buildings, services and other features. A conservative approach was taken when estimating settlements in order to provide an upper bound estimate of the consequent effects. There are three sources of these settlements: mechanical settlement from the tunnel excavation, mechanical settlement from the displacement of retaining walls and consolidation settlement from the groundwater drawdowns during construction and, in some cases, in the long-term.The settlements from these sources were calculated independently and then combined to identify the most critical effects. These combined settlements were used to assess the potential damage to the buildings, services and other features above and around the tunnels. The combined settlement results generally followed the anticipated trough shape centred on the underlying tunnel but with some noticeable effects relating to the underlying geology and hydrogeology.The effects on buildings were typically assessed as negligible with some areas of very slight to moderate damage predicted. Effects on services are anticipated to be minor but some large and older pipes will require specific monitoring during construction. A monitoring programme is proposed to allow the actual settlement and effects to be compared to those estimated with appropriate responses should those effects significantly differ.This paper describes the methods used to calculate and combine the settlements and assess their effects.

This paper examines a successful project implemented by BHP Mitsubishi Alliance (BMA) and the Polymathian team at Deswik, aimed at enhancing short-term scheduling processes to reduce vessel turn times in the BMA Central Queensland coal value chain. The project’s objective was to digitalise the planning process to enable planners to make data-driven insights to improve the profitability of the value chain. The strategy involved developing a digital mining system that incorporates data storage, cloud computing, and the ability to meet the integration needs of both internal and external business systems. This was complemented by a sophisticated, optimisation-based, decision-support tool to enhance the planning teams’ ability to make timely and effective decisions.

The beneficiation of fine coal has been the major problem facing the coal preparation engineer in recent years. The influence of clay slime, particle size and reagent type are but a few of the many factors that affect the recovery of fine coal. Laboratory test work has indicated that substantial increases in recovery could be achieved by improvements in technology in all these areas. Unfortunately, in most cases this technology has not carried through to the operating plants.

HISTORIC SIGNIFICANCE OF EXPLOSIVES TO MINERAL PRODUCTION The ancient method of breaking rock was to build a wood fire against the face, heat the rock through and then pour water on the heated ore-bearing rock to cause it to break by tension. It was too slow and costly as the forests around the mines were cleared and transport of wood became difficult. Black powder had been used for 300 years as a gun propel- lant. ('Black' after Berthold Schwartz, a German monk, Figure 1, and the inventor of the gun who was given the epitaph `Here lies Berthold the Black, the most abominable of inhumans who by his invention has brought misery to the rest of humanity'). Only at the beginning of the 17th Century, black powder was introduced for loosening rock in European mines. In 1802 Dupont started black powder manufacture on the Brandywine Creek. The ignition train of powder was enclosed in goose quills, straws, rushes, paper or wooden tubes. The time interval between igni- tion and blast was pure speculation.

The Boddington Gold Mine orebody is a large tonnage, low grade gold deposit located within the Archaean Saddleback greenstone belt within the south-western region of Western Australia. The orebody consists of laterite caprock (30 per cent) and clays (70 per cent) produced by lateritisation of felsic volcanics and intrusives. The caprock comprises gravel, hardcap and B-zone which have a specific gravity of 1.8, 2.4 and 1.8 respectively. The clay has a specific gravity of 1.5.

With the sinking of the No. 3 Shaft at North Broken Hill Limited, it was necessary to construct adjacent to the shaft a new changehouse for mining and surface personnel.It was also probable that as the older sections of the North and British leases were worked out, all employees at present working in these sections would be transferred to the No. 3 Shaft area. This could ultimately result in all personnel employed by North Broken Hill Limited being concentrated in this area, requiring the construction of new administration offices, workshops, mine store, etc., also in this area.

Squeezing extra performance from existing equipment (‘sweating the assets’) is key to continuous improvement initiatives, particularly during times of cost cutting where the option of spending additional capital to facilitate circuit upgrades can be severely constrained. A common challenge, however, is identifying the best combination of settings for different process variables, as their effects can be camouflaged by interactions with other process variables and, of course, noise in historical data.This paper describes a recent investigation at Boyne Smelters Limited to identify strategies to coarsen the product of its dry, fixed-speed, open-circuit AG mill, without the need for installing pre-screens prior to the mill. The product is used as insulation material for the reduction of alumina to aluminium, and an excessively fine product was inhibiting the ability of the cover material to dissipate heat from the underlying anodes. The approach was to undertake a series of experiments, designed according to statistical criteria, to elucidate the effect of key process variables (feed blend and power draw) upon the product sizing. The results provided clarity about what strategies would encourage the production of a more desirable mill product (with some surprises).
