Over the longer term, the adoption of new technology is an essential component in the endless tasks of reducing mining costs, improving safety and improving environmental standards. However the choice of which of the many available new technologies to adopt and which not to adopt is not easy and the price of mistakes can be very high. The most important issue for mine developers faced with making such choices is knowing whether or not a new technology has been developed to the stage where the timing is right for its adoption. A system for categorising new mining technologies is provided. It provides a basis for more easily reaching common understandings about various new technologies and the background information supplied provides an understanding of what it takes to get new technologies to the proven stage and the risks of never getting there. Wherever possible, new full-scale mine developments should not rely on unproven technologies. Approaches to handling situations where a proposed new mine development is not feasible on the basis of proven technologies are also provided. If any commitment to the use of unproven technologies is made, a guarantee of high quality development support from the supplier of that technology is essential. Several case studies of successful and unsuccessful new technology development programs at BHP are Provided.

As the title indicates the central themes discussed in this contribution are sustainable development, information systems, and extractive industry. More specifically, the objective is to present a prototype for the systematic generation of extractive industry (henceforth: EI) û specific sustainability information. The paper begins with the authorÆs viewpoints on the core notions of sustainability, and development, as well as their relationship to information. These set the stage for the introduction of the information system (IS), as well as the follow-up sustainability information system (SIS) extractive industry sustainability information system (EISIS) concepts and related discussions. The paper continues with a second part, in which, efforts to research and develop an EISIS prototype are described. First, the team is presented. Second, the systemÆs aim and target groups are briefly discussed. After, an articulated overarching EISIS conceptual model emphasising capital accumulation, and service flow concepts û is presented. This is followed by a detailed description of the assembled prototype with a focus on data and information generation. The formulation of data generation, storage and transmission processes, as well as its use in sustainability interpretation rules and their embedment in the conceptual model is made with respect to monetised stock and flow parameters, measured in the appropriate dimensions. In the third part, the author presents and discusses the results of a first round of prototype experimental development in three major EI firms. First, the system observation, and data analysis protocols are described. Second, a review of protocol implementation, and respective results, is made. Finally, the overall performance of the proposed prototype, and development process issues are discussed, before suggesting areas for improvement and future research. The paper ends with a conclusion in which the author provides a retrospective balance of the æknowledge creation projectÆ, as well as a prospective outlook for research in this field; before acknowledgements are made and references provided.

The Wonthaggi coalfield is in South Gippsland, about 90 miles southeast of Melbourne. It is situated on the down-faulted block of the South Gippsland highlands that lies south of the Kongwak fault, between the Powlett River and the sea (Fig. 1). The coal, which is of Jurassic age, occurs in two small, and intensely faulted, limnic basins, that lie on either side of a concealed ridge of Silurian sediments. The coal was first found as thin seams outc1'opping in the cliffs at Cape Paterson, but the seams that are worked at Wonthaggi are concealed beneath a veneer of Cainozoic sands that covers the Jurassic strata, and were found by boring.The c9al seams are worked by the State Coal Mine, which was opened in 1909 to ensure a supply of coal for the Victorian railways, following a prolonged strike in the Newcastle field of New South Wales. Mineral resource and ore reserve classification defines the risk associated with quoted resource tonnes and grades, allowing the interested party to make a judgement as to the `worth' of the resource statement. The JORC Code and Guidelines (1992) are now well entrenched as the foundation upon which gold and base metal deposits in particular are publicly reported. There are three categories of resource, namely Measured, Indicated or Inferred reflecting decreasing levels of confidence. The ore reserve, that is the economically mineable part of the resource, is classified as Proven or Probable and can only be drawn from the Measured and Indicated resource categories. As summarised by Stephenson (1995), resource/reserve classification has been an issue ever since the earliest days of mining in Australasia where, like elsewhere in the world, the industry, for a long time, lacked firm reporting guidelines. Those currently adopted in Australasia as the minimum standards for companies reporting to the Australian Stock Exchange (ASX) have been developed and revised since 1972 by The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy (The AusIMM), the Australian Institute of Geoscientists (AIG) and Australian Mining Industry Council (AMIC). Debate is now underway in terms of adopting an international code. The Code specifically does not attempt to regulate either the classification technique nor the method of estimation of the resource/ore reserve, but rather places the responsibility for this task on a `Competent Person' whose experience will decide the appropriate approach for a given commodity/orebody. The Competent Person must be a Corporate member of either The AusIMM or AIG with five years experience `relevant to the style of mineralisation' under consideration.

Sulfur isotope data are available for 18 low-sulfide orogenic gold systems hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales including those in the northern Hill End Trough (Hargraves, Hill End, Napoleon Reefs, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town, Windeyer) and adjacent areas (Bodangora, Lucknow, Springfield), the Gilmore Fault Zone (Adelong, Sebastopol) and those in the Parkes district (Calarie, London-Victoria, Wyoming One-Myall United). Other systems for which data are available include Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, McMahons Reef and Yalgogrin. The d34S data for many of the larger deposits including Adelong, Bodangora, Calarie, Hargraves, Hill End London-Victoria, Lucknow, Sebastopol, Sofala-Wattle Flat, Stuart Town and Windeyer (Group 1) are all very similar and have average d34S values close to zero per mil. Near 0ë d34S signatures imply that sulfur was sourced from a magmatic reservoir. Furthermore, the large Wyoming One deposit has d34S values significantly below 0ë with the data implying that sulfur was sourced from a fractionated magmatic reservoir. Group 2 deposits include those at Mongarlowe, Murrumbateman, Napoleon Reefs, McMahons Reef and Springfield . These deposits have average d34S values significantly above 0ë. With the exception of Springfield where sulfur was probably sourced from the Hill End Trough, Group 2 deposits are an order of magnitude smaller than Group 1 deposits. The results suggest that many of the larger orogenic-related gold deposits hosted by the Lachlan Orogen in eastern New South Wales derived sulfur and gold as a result of leaching and recycling from a magmatic reservoir. Alternatively, there may have been direct mantle-derived input; however, this is considered unlikely on geological grounds. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The Western Australian School of Mines is continuing to investigate the blasting techniques and mining strategies that are used for ore/waste separation (or high grade/low grade ore separation) or to prevent ore and waste mixing. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and undergoes no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully recovered at the minimum overall operating cost. The current study includes the use of computerised Knowledge Based Systems (KBS) technology to assist the user with the blast technique selection and blast design process. These aspects are highly dependent on the geology. (geometry, rock mass properties, grade distribution), explosive performance and the expectations of the mining company in terms of production rates and equipment utilisation. Most of these factors are not well defined and nor are they easy to quantify. However, a large amount of knowledge does exist and is available in the following forms: rules of thumb, empirical formulae, engineering judgement and past experience. KBS techniques are well adapted to handle such"forms of knowledge. The primary objective of this paper is to illustrate an approach for the use of Knowledge Based Systems during the analysis and interpretation stages of the blast design process. In particular, the components and methodology of the developed system are described for selective open pit gold mining. The Knowledge Based System developed was written using the declarative programming language PROLOG.

Several new techniques. which may be applied with advantage to the search for uranium are described. Scintillation type gamma spectrometers are now available for airborne', ground and borehole use. These can distinguish in a broad way between anomalies due to uranium, thorium and potassium. Gamma spectrometers based on semiconductor detectors now under development should be capable of much greater resolution. These should also make possible rapid, accurate and cheap radiometric analyses of samples containing uranium and/or thorium, whether in radioactive equilibrium or not. Another valuable prospecting aid, particularly in areas of tropical leaching, is systematic sampling of soil for radon content. Equip- ment for this purpose is currently available and it will be possible to extend the method when development of an alpha probe suitable for use in deeper holes is completed. Variations in the concentration of certain trace elements'in soil (e.g. mercury) also offer promise in the search for mineralized zones which may contain economic eon¦- centrations of uranium.

Low-density explosives (LDE) have applications where the explosive properties of ANFO are not well matched to the rock. In particular, rocks that are of low strength and/or well fragmented in situ. Dyno Nobel Asia Pacific (DNAP) has developed a new LDE, BlastLiteTM, which can be used as a cost-effective replacement for ANFO with excellent detonation characteristics. The product is based on ANFO with the addition of a bulking agent. The key to the product lies in the ability of the bulking agent to form a homogeneous blend with ANFO without the need for any emulsion matrix to bind the product together. This results in an LDE of low cost and high weight strength compared to existing commercial LDE products. The product has been trialled extensively and has proven to provide results that are equivalent to, and often better than, ANFO with reduced powder factors. This paper details the laboratory development and results of field trials for DNAPÆs LDE solution: BlastLite.

Elastomeric compression gaskets for segmental tunnel liners are capable of fulfilling all sealing requirements for one pass constructed tunnels.Once the segments are mounted and the gaskets are compressed the watertightness of the tunnel is guaranteed at once and for the whole technical life time.The only prerequisite for effective sealing is that tolerances in the tunnel segments be kept within reasonable limits.

The Upper Triassic Leigh Creek Coal Measures which include a number of seams of sub-bituminous black coal are preserved in four small intramontane basins. The largest is Telford Basin, 1,000 m in thickness. The coals, of variable thickness and quality, are mined by open cast mining methods and utilised for generation of electricity at Port Augusta. The combined proven and indicated reserves are about 100 million tonnes.

The O.K. deposit occurs within a belt of cherts and spilitised basic volcanics near the western margin of the Hodgkinson Province. The tabular to lenticular shape and gross conformability of the ore bodies; the common occurrence of colloform, framboidal and banded textures in the ores; the lack of significant alteration adjacent to the massive ore horizons and the apparent restriction of stockwork mineralization to the foot-wall side of the massive ore zone at the O.K. mine, all favour a syngenetic origin for the massive sulfide bodies. Furthermore, the micro- structural evidence suggests that the ores have undergone the same deformational history as the country rocks. The invariable association of the ores with spilites; the S isotope values and Co-Ni contents of the pyrites, together with the primitive metal assemblage (Fe, Cu, minor Zn) strongly favour a basic magmatic source for the sulfides. It is suggested-that the sulfides were probably precipitated sub aqueous- ly during a hiatus in volcanic activity. The O.K. deposit is of the cupreous pyrite variety, but unlike other well known occurrences of this type, it does not con- stitute part of an ophiolite complex. Rio Tinto’s Hunter Valley Operations is a large open pit coalmine situated in the heart of the Hunter Valley in Australia. The Riverview West Pit has faced increasing production challenges in recent times due to decreasing dragline strike lengths and increasing environmental constraints on vibration, overpressure and fume generation. Conventional mining techniques would involve five to six production blasts per strip to recover multiple coal seams. Each blast event carries the risk of exceeding the strict environmental requirements. By working collaboratively with Orica, it was realised that the blasting method known as Stratablast™, in conjunction with advanced computer modelling techniques, could provide productivity gains whilst simultaneously providing more control over the environmental effects and the impact on nearby infrastructure.As a result of this change, the number of blasts per strip was reduced to one, with the implication that a great deal of care and forethought was needed to manage the increased challenge posed by multiple constraints in the proposed mining area. This innovative approach of combining throw and stand-up blasts allowed the extraction of all major coal seams in a single pass blast event. The blasts were initially designed with a large factor of safety to stay within environmental limits as they were over 1.1 km in strike length, with more than 800 holes and with a total charge weight of about 1000 t of bulk explosives. Furthermore, there were conflicting priorities around the desired blast outcomes. So far, 11 such blasts have been designed and successfully fired. After each blast, innovative design changes have been iteratively implemented to provide further control over environmental impacts, whilst continuing to improve productivity. As a result of these changes, blasts have progressively increased in complexity with the inclusion of features such as damage zones, mid-splitting, time gaps and different directions of firing. The consequence of this complexity is that the blast duration can be as long as 28 seconds to accommodate all components of the blast.This project has increased the productivity of the Riverview West Pit through blast design improvements and allowed the environmental impacts to be managed with far more control and predictability than would have been possible under a conventional blasting regime. At the Highway gold deposit, 37 kilometres south of Charters Towers, gold mineralisation occurs in several stratiform layers and is enriched near the surface by lateritic weathering. The host rocks of the mineralisation are ferruginous and baritic, intensely sericitised, kaolinised and silicified rhyolitic tuffs and pyroclastics of the Cambrian-Ordovician Mount Windsor Volcanics. The geology of the deposit is illustrated in Figures 1 and 2.Forty-six reverse circulation percussion drill holes were completed by North-Queensland Resources N.L. for a total of 2,093 metres of drilling to further outline and test the open pit resource. The drilling indicated a resource of 171,000 tonnes averaging 4.4 grams per tonne gold and 5.0 grams per tonne silver.A shallow initial pit, approximately 30 metres deep, has been designed to mine the high grade upper portion of the western stratiform layer and part of the eastern layer. This initial pit is designed to mine 45,400 tonnes of western mineralisation at an average grade of 7.84 grams per tonne gold and 22,200 tonnes of eastern mineralisation at an average grade of 1.42 grams per tonne gold. Waste is estimated at 110,900 tonnes.

The 1980's have produced an outstanding revival of the Australian gold industry. In contrast to some previous mining booms, the economic aspects of the growth in gold production are soundly based. In general the new developments have been highly profitable and this is beneficial to all parties- whether they be government, shareholders employees or suppliers. Mining companies are showing a large commitment to gold exploration with approximately 50% of Australian exploration budgets now being directed towards gold. An increasing proportion of this expenditure is being channelled towards the eastern States with Queensland 'being the major centre of interest. Further strong growth in production is expected with some 50 projects likely to come on stream before 1990. A very significant aspect of the foundation for this growth is a continuation of the existing tax status of the industry.

A laboratory investigation was carried out to determine the distribution of gold between the products of lead-zinc concentrate smelting in the Imperial Smelting Furnace (ISF). Bullion, speiss and slag from the ISF at Cockle Creek were used as the starting materials to evaluate the effect of gold and copper content of products on the distribution of gold between phases under conditions simulating those in the ISF hearth. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in speiss has a mean value of approximately 1.6 and is independent of the gold content of the bullion. The distribution coefficient of gold between bullion and speiss is dependent on the copper level in speiss and is lowered by increasing copper content in speiss. The ratio of gold in bullion to gold in slag is in the range 25 to 5700 and dependent on the gold content of the bullion. For low gold concentrations in bullion of the order of 1 g/t and a bullion to slag ratio of 1:3 the gold loss to slag is expected to be approx- imately 23%. In all tests the gold in slag remained low, in the range 0.05 to 0.5 ppm provided metal prills were not suspended in Slag.

Mechanised sub-level stoping is one of the most widely accepted stoping practices followed in base metal mines in India. As a general practice, blast-scheduling of rings in these stopes is done either heuristically or randomly which leads to a high fluctuation in ore grade when drawn and delivered to the mill. In this paper, dynamic programming has been investigated as an optimisation technique for optimal blast-scheduling of rings. A microcomputer based dynamic programming algorithm has been developed in C language which runs under the UNIX environment. A case study based on Indian mine data is presented to demonstrate the application of the dynamic programming concept and use of the developed software. It is concluded that dynamic programming can be used as a production planning tool in Indian mines practicing sub-level stoping and following heuristic/random approaches for blast-scheduling of rings.

This paper details successful implementation of a revolutionary pit access system involving excavation of an 'in-the-wall' ramp at Three Mile Hill open pit operated by Gold Mines of Coolgardie, formerly Goldfan Limited, at Coolgardie, Western Australia. Three Mile Hill is a medium-size, open pit, gold operation typified by hard, competent, fresh rock conditions from near surface. The project involved construction of a haulage tunnel or decline access located in the wall of an open pit in place of a conventional pit access ramp. Works undertaken as discussed herein included excavation, support, ventilation, dewatering, services installation, commissioning and monitoring. Prior to implementation, the conventional hardrock pit slopes and designs were constrained by the presence of infrastructure and a main road to the North and by adjoining leases to the Southeast. The combination of these factors and economic considerations resulted in a decision to proceed with an innovative in-the-wall ramp access system that is believed to be the first of its type in Australia. Back-analysis indicates that implementation resulted in a cost saving of as much as A$3.6 million and increased mineable pit reserves. The paper deals with the successful implementation and operation of the in-the-wall ramp haulage as well as an economic evaluation that is aimed at drawing some general conclusions on favourable conditions for implementation in other mining scenarios.

The paper discusses the improvements achieved after an external sparger flotation column, 1.42 m diameter by 9.5 m high, was installed as a re-recleaner unit at the Northam Platinum LtdÆs UG 2 plant in South Africa. The paper also evaluates the pilot plant data prior to the industrial size column installation as well as the accuracy of scale up from pilot to full-scale operation. Since the installation of the PrepQuip flotation column, the final concentrate upgrade ratio improved from 83 to 105, the 3PGM+Auå recovery improved from 79.7 per cent to 81 per cent and the Cr2O3 content in the final concentrate decreased from five per cent to 2.8 per cent. The upgrade ratio can be improved to 125 with an overall 3PGM+Au recovery of 80 per cent. Conventional mechanically agitated flotation cells achieved only 74 per cent recovery at an upgrade ratio of 125.

Sinter plants currently have to use many types of ores with different properties due to the great demand for iron ores, which was driven by the massive growth in Chinese iron and steel industry. On the other hand, the development of iron ore mines is limited and the quality of iron ores is in a tendency of deterioration. Therefore, the quick evaluation of iron ores has become more important for a stable sintering operation. In addition to such a background, the CO2 gas emission should be decreased from sinter plants according to the Kyoto Protocol on reduction in greenhouse gases. The present paper first describes the methods for testing the metallurgical properties of iron ores, which use a small volume of sample mainly focusing on magnetite ore that is effective for reducing CO2 and NOx emissions from sinter plants. The sintering properties of ores are evaluated separately according to each stage in sintering process, that is: heating stage before melt formation, primary melt formation in adhering fines layer of pseudo-particles, and assimilation of nucleus ore particle with calcium-ferrite system melts.Next, the application of the tests to the blending ores is introduced showing examples of the studies on the effective usage of the magnetite ores with Marra Mamba type ores.

From experience in the design and operation of power station combustion facilities in most mainland Australian States, involving a wide range of black coals and lignites, and in the specification and procurement of coal supplies for power station use, techniques for the optimisation of coal resource development and power generation utilisation have been developed to ensure compatibility between characteristics of the selected coals and power station design. These techniques include computer data bases for resource data handling and computer simulation of coal-fired boilers for determining coal property cost effects. Data Base Systems allow results of coal analyses to be efficiently handled, to assist in the review of the relevance of resource data to the coal sections proposed to be mined and the coal fractions proposed to be marketed. Data Base Systems also facilitate the marshalling of coal quality data into basic utilisation format to enable a proper utilisation review and analysis of the certainty and scatter of coal properties. Computer simulation of the effects of different coal properties on the capital and operating cost of power stations is achieved by establishing conceptual design parameters of the major items of plant to relate the variations in coal specification to equipment size and type. Variations in power station budget costs can then be determined using the computer model for variations in coal specification.
