Surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy at surfaces under electrochemical control has been applied to elucidate the adsorption of thiol collectors. SERS spectroelectrochemical studies at coinage metal electrodes have been carried out on ethyl xanthate and three iso-xanthates, O-isopropyl-N-ethylthionocarbamate, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, diisobutyl- dithiophosphinate and butylethoxycarbonylthioura. For each collector, adsorption occurs via charge transfer to form a metal-sulfur bond and, in situations for which the reversible potential of the formation of the bulk phase is known, at underpotentials.

In-pit tailings storage can provide many advantages when compared to typical above-ground tailings storage facilities (TSFs). As regulations become more restrictive and existing mines expand into new pits, the motivation and opportunities for in-pit tailings disposal is increasing.The Langer Heinrich uranium orebody follows a palaeo-river channel and is mined as an open pit operation. The mine pits intersect two main aquifer systems, one at the surface and one at the base of the orebody/pits. The tailings storage methodology is full in-pit disposal in multiple TSFs for the life-of-mine. Continuity of the initial hydrogeological conditions is incorporated in the design by the use of the pervious surround concept and the reinstatement of the lower aquifer (palaeochannel aquifer) at the base of the pit. Containment embankments are required to facilitate the staging of the TSFs development and are constructed using waste rock liberated during the mining of the pits. All of the TSFs are equipped with decant structures and an underdrainage system is included to improve water recovery, enhance consolidation and increase tailings density.This paper presents the design of a unique in-pit tailings storage solution for the Langer Heinrich mine in Namibia owned by Paladin Energy Ltd.CITATION:Hore, C and Luppnow, D, 2015. "Cash flow modelling during project evaluation is enhanced when probabilistic methods are applied to the inputs. One of the important inputs is the quarterly production profile. Typically, the steady-state production profile provided to project evaluation practitioners is deterministic, with each quarter the same as every other quarter. This is unrealistic as actual production profiles from existing mines exhibit a range or quarter-on-quarter variance. Monte Carlo stochastic simulation of the production profile can be used to provide a range of possible outcomes, but how are these ranges selected? This paper describes the use of quarterly production variance from a large database of mines worldwide as a benchmark to inform the appropriate selection of ranges. The coefficient of variation is used to rank the production from mines, with quartile analysis applied to indicate industry best, median and worst variation. Due diligence of existing mines and evaluation of future production performance can be quantitatively assessed using this approach. General Gold was discovered in quartz veins at Wiluna in 1896, and the first lode was discovered in 1904. Since 1896, some 2.5 million ounces of gold have been produced from the Wiluna area. The mining operations at Wiluna are 100 per cent owned by Wiluna Gold Pty Ltd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Wiluna Mines Ltd. Oxide and sulphide gold ore is extracted by conventional open pit mining techniques, and ran-of-mine ore is processed through two separate circuits. The oxide circuit has a capacity to treat 600 0(X) tonnes per annum and the sulphide circuit has a capacity to treat 400 (XX) tonnes per annum. Additional gold is won by dump leaching sub-grade oxidised ore and by retreating of primary ore flotation tailings from previous operations. Testwork carried out in 1990 indicated the viability of leaching dumps of run-of-mine oxide ore, and in June 1991 Signet Engineering of Perth, WA, was awarded an EPCM contract to construct a nominal 2.5 million tonne dump leach facility, for a total construction estimate of 51.75 million.

A continued exploration programme has further defined the geology of the Tolukuma vein system, verified the resource indicated by Newmont, and identified potential for additional mineralisation. The resource at Tolukuma Hill, designated as zone C, is a mine recoverable 432,000 t at 18.1 g/t Au & 46 g/t Ag. Mining will be by a combination of open pit and underground at a rate of 100,000 t per annum. Processing will be by SAG mill, gravity circuit and CIL plant. A diatreme breccia, localised at an intersection of structures and a relationship of gold to base metal sulphides, are indicative of a strong porphyry association. Typical epithermal features such as crustiform banded quartz and quartz pseudomorphing platy calcite are also present and locally contain lesser gold mineralisation. Pre-existing dilatant structures have acted as a host to the ore fluids, resulting in the formation of the semi-continuous Tolukuma-Gulbadi veins over a 1100 in strike. A fluid flow model suggests that mineralizing fluids were sourced from a diatreme margin and migrated laterally along dilatant structures. Bonanza gold grades are interpreted to be derived through fluid quenching in the flexure between a hanging wall split, which hosts much of the Tolukuma Hill resource, and the feeder graben structure. Thus, the relationship between the pre-mineral structural geometry and fluid upflow at the margins of a diatreme breccia, controls the ore setting.

A static equilibrium mathematical model of the lead,flotation circuit at The Zinc Corporation Limited is developed to permit the feasibility of applying computer control techniques to be studied. The model is based on the relationship between the cumulative recovery of a mineral species R from n flotation cells or assemblies in a unit given asR = M(1-(1 - p)?)where M is the maximum possible: recovery and p is the probability of flotation for the particular mineral.The verification of this relationship by data from pilot plant cell-to-cell and plant open flow flotation units shows that these systems behave as if the probability p is constant for each cell or assembly of anyone unit. It is also concluded from this study that mineral recovery is independent of the head assay. Two consequences of this probability relationship, are demonstrated.1. The total recovery from an open flow unit is enhanced by increasing the number of flotation assemblies but maintaining a constant flotation time and total air addition.2. The rougher and scavenger capacity required to recover a bulk lead-zinc concentrate is approximately half that used for selective flotation.The static equilibrium model is derived by solving a series, of mass balance equations which incorporate the recovery-probability relationship for each type of flotation unit. It is used to calculate the complete metallurgy of the circuit for any arrangement of cells knowing only the plant feed assays and the probabilities of flotation for the three mineral types, galena, marmatite, and gangue for rougher, scavenger, and cleaner flotation. The high degree of prediction obtained is demonstrated by comparison with plant results.Pulp flowrate is the principal variable affecting the accuracy of the present model. Work is in progress to establish this effect and permit the derivation of a dynamic model. Even so, the static model is valuable in its present form for the analysis and design of circuits, and optimisation studies using computer services have been conducted.

Dissolution of non-metallic inclusions in the metallurgical slag is of vital importance for cleanliness control of the steel manufacturing. With the development of high temperature confocal laser scanning microscope (HT-CLSM), new insights have been obtained due to its in situ observation characteristics, higher resolution and precise control. However, HT-CLSM measurement has the limitation, eg the slag composition cannot include high amount of transition metal oxides. In addition, it is time consuming for the experimental procedure and not so simple to succeed for every measurement. It is known that digitalisation has made a significant progress in recent years. Machine learning (ML), a sub-domain of artificial intelligence (AI), is the key enabling technology for the digitalisation of the material science and industry. The database for ML model is collected using almost all available HT-CLSM experimental data and subsequently the established database is trained by different ML methods. Unseen data is used as the benchmark of the ML model. Al2O3 dissolution is the main process to be predicted in the current study. A good agreement between the HT-CLSM data and the ML model prediction results show the possibility to apply ML in process metallurgy.

Aitik, a Boliden owned and operated open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand production from 18 Mt per year today to 36 Mt per year copper ore during 2010. The challenge for the mine operation is to double production with a planned increase of the shovel and truck fleet of only 50 per cent. This will be achieved through improved shovel and truck utilisation and productivity. In early 2005 Aitik started projects to enhance the utilisation of truck engine hours and to reduce fuel consumption. Both projects were successful, within a year efficient2 utilisation of engine hours increased from 60 per cent to 75 per cent and fuel consumption was reduced by six to eight per cent. The truck utilisation project focused on minimising idle truck hours by for example four operators on three trucks thus reducing idle engine hours to minimise lost time for breaks and shift changes. Other measures included focusing on improved dispatch usage, parking trucks when overtrucked, etc. Eco-driving was a project together with Swedish Road Administration with the objective to combine economical and environmental savings. To keep the focus on eco-driving a reward was set up for the shift team with the lowest fuel rate over rolling 15 weeks periods. Both activities included a comprehensive training program for mine foremen, dispatchers and truck operators focusing on efficient use of trucks from economic driving to optimised truck dispatching and minimising idle engine hours. Online monitoring of trucks activities and fuel consumption combined with continuous reporting gave shift foremen and management a tool to discuss and follow trends and individual shift team performance. The combination of close monitoring of mainly organisational practices and operator training resulted in significant productivity increase and lower operating costs without any capital investments.

In the five years since Great Central Mines Limited (GCM) commenced exploration in the Jundee and Bronzewing areas of Western Australia's Yandal greenstone belt, the Company has been transformed from a junior explorer into Australia's fourth largest gold producer with annual production of approximately 440 000 ounces and mineral resources of seven million ounces of gold.The growth in resources has been driven by a high quality geoscientific approach, supported by a substantial budget for drilling and strong management commitment. In 1997, the Company expects to spend US$30 million on exploration in the Yandal greenstone belt.

Fundamental studies on the transformations of iron oxides have been carried out and related to the solution conditions in the Becher process. The results show that a number of iron oxide interconversion reactions occur in the aeration reactor with the products depending on the pH, temperature and oxidation potential of the aeration liquor. It is concluded that the lack of process control in the aeration reactor of the Becher process significantly hinders the ability to predict and produce high quality single phase iron oxides of a consistent colour.

The JK Drop Weight test was developed at the Julius Kruttschnitt Mineral Research Centre (JKMRC) in the early 1990s as a means of characterising ore for the purposes of AG/SAG mill and crusher modelling. It has since been used extensively worldwide in the minerals industry as a key ore characterisation test which produces parameters which are used in comminution circuit design and optimisation. The test generates three parameters which are used in the AG/SAG mill model of the JKSimMet software. The resistance of the ore to high energy (impact) breakage is quantified with the A and b parameters. The oreÆs resistance to low energy (abrasion) breakage is measured using the ta parameter. The accuracy and precision of the results of the JK drop weight test are of great importance given that the parameters are key inputs in the design of such capital intensive items as SAG mills. Plant optimisation exercises also rely on the accuracy of the parameters to assist with improving the performance of an existing circuit. A thorough analysis of the accuracy and precision of the parameters generated by the JK drop weight test has now been undertaken by JKTech Pty Ltd (JKTech). An experimental program was designed using statistical methods to plan a hierarchical set of 24 drop weight tests on homogeneous material. Each stage of the test was identified and incorporated into the experimental design so that the contribution to the overall error of each stage could be quantified, including the effect of operator. The data were analysed by nested analysis of variance. An overall analysis of the A, b and ta parameters generated from the test program has now quantified the variance of these parameters more thoroughly than ever before. Using the results for the impact parameters, an analysis has been carried out to investigate the effect of these variances on final SAG mill comminution circuit design. The results will also be used to refine the comparative testing procedures currently in use by licensees worldwide.

Digital photogrammetry is revolutionising the task of geotechnical mapping of jointed rock masses and has greatly increased in popularity and sophistication in recent years. Modern commercially available digital photogrammetry software systems can provide geotechnical practitioners with a user friendly tool for rapid data acquisition. The data can be acquired remotely from large exposure areas, some of which may be otherwise out of reach due to restrictions on time, access or safety.Photogrammetry is a complimentary technology to discrete fracture network (DFN) modelling because it can provide the large, statistically significant, spatially located geotechnical data sets required to produce the most robust results. It also provides the flexibility to selectively map structures at a range of scales, depending on the focus of the DFN modelling.Integration of the interpreted rock structure data derived from photogrammetry with modern DFN modelling methods really advances the rock engineering process. The ability to generate 3D fracture models driven by the statistical structural data and conditioned to the features observed by the photogrammetry yields a synthetic rock mass on which improved design methods can be applied. The generation of multiple equi-probable conditioned DFN models allows the use of probabilistic methods for assessing kinematic stability, rock block size distribution as well as a range of other applications.CITATION:Rogers, S F and Booth, P W, 2014. An essential requirement of product quality control in the mining industry is to be able to reliably predict key quality properties of finished product from the data available before the extraction of the ore. From a production viewpoint, the unit of data collection is generally the input and output data set for each shift of crusher production, but could be any period where mine precrusher data can be reliably matched with product data.This paper demonstrates that linear regression models can be used to predict crush grades from blast grades, even where the crush material is blended from multiple sources or pits for each of which differing regression models might apply. The advantage of using increasingly complex regressions models to match the available data to give increasingly more powerful models is examined. The best model for any application will be a balance between required predictability, available data and the business’ tolerance for complex models.The regression modelling approach has several advantages over the more classic method of run-of-mine (ROM) crusher trials, which will be discussed.The models can use any predictor variable such as grade, geotype and in situ density provided the preextraction data set can be reliably matched with post-crusher data and is significant as a predictor. The models have been used extensively in the generation of the daily crusher plan with the aim of maintaining finished product grade. This approach has also been used associated with exploration drilling and long-term planning.It is acknowledged that there are inherent problems in fitting lump and fines grade to a linear model. However, these problems are minor when they are used for interpolation within the window spanned by the shift blend records used to produce the model. This paper discusses some of the issues limiting linear regression models in this application, and suggests methods enabling consistent models to be formulated

The nickel segregation process is one of the methods for treating nickel oxide ores. In this process nickel oxide ores are heated together with a small amount of the carbonaceous reductants and halides to about 800-950¦C. The reduced nickel segregates onto the surface of the carbonaceous reductants in the form of metallic particles which are recovered by magnetic separation or flotation. Pilot plant tests for the extraction of nickel from nickel oxide ores have been made using nickel segregation process by means of a new roasting installation which is called the "Mechanical Kiln" (2.5m~ x 3m,') with autogenous heating. Nickel oxide ores containing about 2.5%Ni were mixed with 2.5%CaC12 and 2.7%coal, and continuously charged into this installation at the rate of 60kg/h in continuous operation for 30 days per trial.

This paper describes a CFD modelling study which was carried out to investigate possible improvements in the design of an alumina precipitator tank at the Jajarm plant of Iran Alumina Company. In particular, the tank has an impeller located very close to the tank bottom, such that it quickly becomes covered with settled solids after a shut-down of the agitator, making it difficult to restart. A CFD model was firstly set up in which the existing design was evaluated in terms of flow pattern, off-bottom suspension and distribution of solids, and power consumption. Further simulations were then carried out to test alternative designs, leading to a recommended design, which maintains good mixing, with the same power consumption and without the use of a low-clearance impeller.

"In order to effectively predict the roof collapse of underground openings using continuum models, it is imperative that a realistic failure criterion is used to represent the rock mass. However, for coal mining operations, there is still uncertainty as to the appropriate failure criterion that should be used for the coal measure strata. This study compares stability numbers and collapse mechanisms for a rectangular underground opening predicted based on three commonly used failure criteria: the standard Mohr-Coulomb, Mohr-Coulomb with a tension cut-off and Hoek-Brown. Three methods of analysis are considered: an analytical upper bound method an upper and lower bound finite element formulation the displacement finite element method.The theoretical results are also compared with field measurements of subsidence above longwall coal mining. For the standard Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion, the friction angle governs the shape of the collapse mechanism, and the so-called critical width (the cavity width above which failures extend to the ground surface) ascertained from field observations in the New South Wales coalfields corresponds to a friction angle of approximately 30°. On the other hand, predictions obtained based on the Hoek-Brown failure criterion consistently overestimate the critical width. The results also show that tensile failure governs the stability of the cavity and shape of the collapse mechanism when a tension cut-off is introduced for the Mohr-Coulomb yield criterion.CITATION:Suchowerska, A M, Hambleton, J P and Carter, J P, 2014. Coal washability data can be used for assessing coal quality. However, the techniques of using these data to solve quality problems differ from one mine to another and certain problems may never really be investigated due to limitations of the available techniques. One promising way to overcome these limitations is by correct application of geostatistics.A geostatistical study on coal washability data was undertaken based on a data set of closely spaced in-pit bore cores. These bore cores were analysed consistently over a relatively simple geological area. The average distance between the drill holes was about lOOm. There were 78 drill holes available for the area after deleting the erroneous bore cores. During the study, nine extra closely spaced drill holes were drilled within a single mining block.A procedure to construct two coal quality models, a kriging or cokriging model and a simulation model, was proposed. The modelling results for the data above are discussed and results of a mine scheduling exercise based on the models developed are included.

The problems facing the metallurgical industry from the viewpoint of the range of unacceptable residues, flue dusts and slags currently produced from the electrolytic zinc process, electric arc furnace scrap treatment, and blast furnace operation in lead smelting and the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP) are addressed. The application of the Ausmelt technology is discussed and analysed for the pyrometallurgical treatment of zinc plant residues, steel plant flue dusts and lead blast furnace and ISP slags, as well as the more complex issue of smelter modernisation to avoid production of zinc plant residues in the future. Processes developed from pilot work are described and indications of the economics of treatment of electrolytic zinc plant neutral residue and jarosite are given.

Geostatistics is now widely used in the mining industry in the estimation of ore reserves and terms like kriging, variogram and estimation variance are becoming well known. Ordinary Kriging (OK) has been found by some practioners to be a superior tool compared with other ore reserve estimators. However, kriging hasn't been the ultimate solution to difficulties which may arise in ore reserve estimation. Several additional geostatistical techniques have been recently developed for more efficient ore reserve estimation in some deposits, especially gold and other precious metals. These include indicator kriging and probability kriging which are useful tools to work with in a selective mining operation.

Brunswick Mining and Smelting Corporation Limited operates a large base metal property near Bathurst, New Brunswick in eastern Canada. Nominal capacity for the underground mining operation and concentrator is 10 250 DMT/day. Four concentrates are produced by differential flotation technology to recover minerals containing copper, lead, zinc and silver. Two characteristics of the Brunswick ores have a major impact on mineral processing operations. The mineralogy of the ore is complex with a total sulphide mineral content of 85 per cent. In addition, the ore is extremely fine-grained, and satisfactory liberation is difficult to achieve. These characteristics directly influence flotation selectivity and thereby affect metallurgical performance. Significant improvements in metallurgical performance have been achieved through the application of basic grinding and flotation principles using conventional milling equipment. Current operating practice and the metallurgical advancements are detailed.
