Paste fill has been used successfully at Henty Gold Mine for the past five years. It has allowed 100 per cent extraction of the orebody, stabilised poor ground and enabled wide sections and offsets to be mined safely. However, there are a number of inefficiencies in the current paste fill system. These include the low output from the drum filter, the addition of aggregate to the paste to compensate and the trucking of paste from the plant to the portal. These inefficiencies have increased the operating cost of the paste fill system and caused a number of operational challenges such as blockages and increased pipe wear. These challenges have been partly overcome by taking ownership of the paste fill process, improved quality control and better communication. Henty is currently developing two new orebodies, the Mt Julia and the Darwin and has an opportunity to build an efficient paste fill operation. This is likely to be a high density paste system without aggregate, either located above the new orebodies or located at the plant and pumped to the new site.

Sixty Schlumberger electrical soundings were carried out in the Depot Springs area, near Agnew, Western Australia as part of an investigation into the availability of groundwater for the Agnew nickel project. The object of the survey was to locate calcrete aquifers related to Tertiary drainage channels on the Pre- Cambrian surface. The electrical soundings were initially interpreted using sets of master curves and auxiliary point methods. Electrical sections were produced and contour maps prepared of apparent resistivity for AB=80m, total conductance of the overburden and transverse resistance.

Although efforts towards producing a `total quality rockfill product' have allowed cemented rockfill costs to be reduced considerably, there is still tremendous potential for further cost reductions. Cemented rockfill costs range from approximately $7 to $12 (US) per tonne of fill placed. Approximately 50 per cent of the rockfill costs are associated with cement costs. A large portion of the remaining 50 per cent is associated with labour and materials handling costs. Several Canadian underground mines utilise haulage trucks and/or conventional belt conveyors to distribute the rockfill. However, due to the restrictive nature of the underground environment, these current materials handling systems have limitations (ie spillage from trucks, dust from conveyors). The Sicon conveyor system (developed in Sweden) has considerable potential for replacing these current methods. The Sicon conveyor utilises a revolutionary approach - the conveyor belt is folded over upon itself (forming a tear drop shape) so that the transported material is completely encased within the belt. The Sicon conveyor's ability to negotiate very tight comers (without transfer points) makes the conveyor very appealing for underground mining applications. An analysis comparing the pros and cons associated with the Sicon conveyor system versus conventional materials handling systems will be presented in this paper.

Most aspects of process design are best addressed via bench scale or pilot plant scale test work. However, as experience is gained, fundamental or indicative data can provide more than adequate information to manage the risk associated with some process aspects of concentrator design.Historical precedence exists where minimal design test work has resulted in successful projects. On many occasions benchmarking, sometimes supported by fundamental data such as mineralogy, has been used to successfully develop effective process plant outcomes. Of course, this style of approach is most common with æfast trackÆ projects and often comes with the usual surprises that result from inadequate geometallurgy to define the project cash flow.This paper explores the risks and opportunities associated with the various facets of process development and design for a base metals concentrator. Sulphur partition between metal and slag has been examined on a cast-by-cast basis for BTIP furnaces. Partition values. were calculated from thermodynamic equilibrium data together with oxygen activities computed from the manganese partition. The S-C interaction coefficient, esc , was treated as an adjust- able parameter and the agreement between calculated and measured S partition values optimized. In the case of furnaces operating with low viscosity slags this procedure led to estimates of esc in close agreement with previously measured values. The same analysis applied to daily average data for several Kawasaki Steel furnaces led to the same esti- mates of e c s , indicating a similar approach to equilibrium. Silicon partition between metal and slag has been examined on a time average basis and found to be far removed from thermodynamic equilibrium for most Australian furnaces. A study of Japanese furnaces of comparable size reveals a temperature dependence of Si parti- tion which appears to be close to equilibrium. Australian furnaces approach this behaviour only when operating with low viscosity slags. A preliminary examination of the effects of burdening with TiO 2 on the silicon partition is also reported.

The United States Steel Corp. in cooperation with the United States Government is conducting a large-scale methane drainage field demonstration using stimulated vertical boreholes drilled in advance of mining. A grid pattern of 23 boreholes, isolating approximately 1.5 km2 of coalbed area, has been drilled to the lower bench of the Mary Lee coalbed, Jefferson County, Alabama. Upon completion of drilling operations, various hydraulic stimulation treatments utilizing nitrogen-generated foam, water, and gelled fluid were performed to enhance the rate of methane gas removal. Production from the grid pattern began in September 1977 and continued as the last borehole was placed on production during October 1980. To date, in excess of 33,800,000 m3 of methane gas has been drained as a result of this effort. Underground mining operations were approximately 3.2 km from the grid pattern when production began and have currently progressed to within 1.6 km. Underground interception of the grid is expected in 1986.

The application of reinforcement techniques to enhance the stability of underground coal mine roadways subject to high stresses is discussed. Research conducted in the Illawarra Coal Measures has been aimed to delineate the factors which influence the behaviour of rock above roadways and the performance of the reinforcement placed. Design considerations for the reinforcement of mine roadways in the Bulli coal are based on a quantification of the rock response together with a reinforcement strategy to enhance the structural integrity of the roof strata.

Geology can be the root of evil or a source of bliss; there is a choice; to ignore geology is at a mine's peril.Risk can be minimised and profitability maximised by the application of a detailed understanding of geology, alteration, structure, mineralogy, chemistry, fabric and texture.Geology is dynamic, not static.The impact of geology is pervasive.The integration of ore quality control with grade control is one strategy for improving the utilisation of both the mineable reserves and existing plant and equipment. Grade maintenance is but one constraint on the problem of how best to blend the ore. Other ore characteristics such as mineralogy, hardness for grinding, and pulp fluidity or density for slurry size classification can be included to explore alternative blending Strategies.

The Nicolsons Find gold project is located 35 km southwest of Halls Creek in the east Kimberley. It was discovered in the late 1980s by John Nicolson and Stuart Skoglund, when high grade gold mineralisation within outcropping gossanous quartz reefs was found. The area has produced a modest 28 150 ounces of gold over two brief mining periods in 1996 and 2002 - 2003. Indicated and inferred resources as of September 2011 stand at 1 384 000 t at 5.58 g/t Au for 248 500 ounces of gold.The project is situated within the Halls Creek Orogen. Principal host units are metasediments and volcaniclastic sediments of the Koongie Park Formation. Minor mafic units are also recognised. Immediately east of these units, emplacement of the loadstone granite is believed to have provided the structural setting for the later gold mineralising event.Mineralisation is hosted within a broad, brittle-ductile arcuate shear zone about the western contact of the Loadstone granite. In the Nicolsons Find area, the shear zone strikes north-northeast and within the shear zone, gold is hosted in a series of narrow, quartz rich veins up to 200 m in strike length, plunging moderately to the north-northeast. To date, mineralisation has been drilled to a depth of 360 m below the surface. The veins are stepped or en-echelon in nature with low gold values towards the quartz vein limits where compression is inferred and higher grades present in the dilational body of the quartz veins. Gold is fine grained and can be present with or without associated sulfides. Sulfides are generally minor and consist mainly of arsenopyrite with traces of chalcopyrite, pyrite and sphalerite. Where present, sulfides are generally indicative of higher gold values.CITATION:Csar, M, 2012. "It is vitally important in projects where the cut-off grade is low that there is no contamination during the sampling and sample preparation process, both in the ore and the waste zones. Failure to identify contamination could have devastating financial consequences for a project. The use of a variety of blank types is essential for ensuring that contamination is identified and eliminated at every stage of the sampling and sample preparation process. This paper examines an instance where an effective assay quality assurance and quality control (QA/QC) program was able to identify and eliminate a source of significant multi-element contamination in the prefeasibility stages of an open pit project. This examination includes the: evidence for contamination findings of the investigation process of resolving the problem and correcting the data evidence for both addition of metal and dilution through contamination potential impact on the project had this issue not been dealt with. It was through the use of a combination of blank types that the QA/QC process at Mount Isa Mines (MIM) identified a contamination issue at the first crushing phase of sample preparation. Identification of the contamination allowed MIM to stop assaying activities and work with the laboratory to correct the problem. The sampling program could then be continued with no further doubts about the sample preparation process. Contaminated samples were resampled from retained core. With the continuous monitoring provided by the blanks program, it was possible to ensure that only clean results went into the resource modelling data set. CITATION:Webb, J, 2014. The Perseverance deposit is the most southerly known economic copper/gold deposit within the Cobar gold field. The deposit is situated approximately 12 km to the south-southeast of Cobar and is essentially blind to surface with the top of economic mineralisation occurring 750 m below ground level.Based on the December 2010 resource estimate (inclusive of reserves and net of depletion) the deposit contains 3 011 000 tonnes at 6.1 g/t Au and 0.90 per cent Cu (590 000 oz of gold and 28 000 tonnes of copper). The deposit is comprised of four principal lenses, the Perseverance, Hulk, Zone B, and Hercules lenses. In excess of 90 per cent of the known resource tonnes are contained within the Perseverance and Hulk lenses. The deposit is shear related and hosted within lower Devonian rocks of the Cobar Basin. The competency contrast of rhyolites juxtaposed against sediments by the Peak-Perseverance shear is the principal control on mineralisation. Both the Perseverance and Hulk lenses are primarily hosted by brecciated rhyolites juxtaposed against Chesney formation sediments across the Peak-Perseverance shear. This faulted rhyolite sediment contact roughly defines the global orientation of the deposit. The Perseverance lens continues within the shear for up to several hundred metres beyond the extent of the faulted rhyolite sediment contact. Mineralisation within the shear beyond the faulted rhyolite contact zone is hosted by sheared silicified sediments. The Perseverance lens remains open at depth and to the south.The Zone B and Hercules lenses, which are significantly less important in tonnage terms, are hosted by rhyolite breccias within the main body of the rhyolite and appear to be only tenuously related to the Peak-Perseverance shear. Within the Perseverance lens, the presence of northeast trending high grade breccia veins developed oblique to the north-south trending shear system has led to the development of steeply north plunging high grade ore shoots within a globally north-south trending mineralised domain. These high grade shoots have limited horizontal continuity but significant down plunge extent.The presence of coarse gold and the resulting strongly skewed nature of the gold grades, in conjunction with controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the mineralised domain, has led to predictive difficulties regarding stope performance.Strong heterogeneity of the gold content of the ore and geological controls on mineralisation which are not parallel to the global trend of the mineralisation impose a set of difficulties which sound geological control is helping overcome.

Understanding the real utilisation of the available volumetric capacity of a conveyor is key to unlocking latent capacity or ‘debottlenecking’ existing plant. Conveyors are typically designed on the basis of conservative density and ore surcharge angle specifications, and consequently there is often latent volumetric capacity available.Laser scanning measurements of conveyor ore profiles has been undertaken on iron ore conveyors to gain an understanding of the actual surcharge angle and the available edge clearances. Iron ore producers seeking to extract maximum production from their assets have used these measurements to debottleneck existing plant and to revise the design criteria for future plant. The benefit is that latent capacity of existing plant can be unlocked and smaller and cheaper conveyors can be designed for future plant, maximising the return on capital. The Kencana underground gold mine comprises two world-class epithermal vein deposits located in the North Maluku province of Indonesia on Halmahera Island. The K1 deposit has a recent extensive mining history, whilst development of the K2 deposit is in progress. Kencana epithermal vein zones have a relatively simple planar geometry dipping 25 to 45¦ towards the East and extend 400 to 600 m along strike and down dip. True width ranges from 1 m to 20 m. Economic gold grades are generally associated with two distinct mineralisation styles: Main Zone û continuous material characterised by classic epithermal vein textures including crustiform/colloform chalky white quartz- adularia sulfide banded and brecciated veining typically grading 10 to 40 g/t Au. Bonanza Zone û semi-continuous identifiable zones within the Main Zone. Characterised by brecciated quartz-adularia sulfide banded vein æginguroÆ material typically grading 80 to 200 g/t Au. Associated with this æBonanzaÆ zone are gold grades averaging around ten times higher than the surrounding Main Zone. At the resource evaluation stage, these deposits are typically drilled on approximately 25 m by 25 m spacing. This drilling density is usually adequate to allow robust estimation of global resources, including the lateral definition of æBonanzaÆ style mineralisation. It appears intuitive at the resource definition stage to separately model the æBonanza ZoneÆ using deterministic methods such as manual interpretation and wireframing. Inevitably, however, such deterministic methods result in a simplified version of reality. Whilst the geologistÆs interpretation of the overall vein volume and lateral extent of æBonanzaÆ mineralisation has proven to be remarkably accurate, close-spaced sampling and mapping of the K1 orebody has shown that this style of mineralisation exhibits extreme short-scale geometric and spatial variability. A consequence of this short-scale geometric and grade variability is the significant uncertainty with reporting these Resources and Reserves at relatively small reporting time periods such as monthly production periods. The mining method employed at Kencana often involves extracting the full width of the mineralised vein with multiple mining passes over several months. In the past it has proven difficult to achieve accurate production budgets and forecasts at Kencana as any given mining schedule based on the resource model is acutely sensitive to the quantity and location of æBonanzaÆ material. Moreover, the degree of uncertainty or risk associated with a mining schedule significantly increases as the reporting time period becomes smaller. A further deficiency of deterministic methods for geometric modelling is the inherent lack of ability to derive confidence intervals for quantifying uncertainty and risk. The use of conditional simulation techniques can help overcome this deficiency. Geostatistical conditional simulation techniques have been applied at Kencana in an attempt to model and quantify geological and grade variability in the upcoming K2 orebody based on the experience to date with mining the K1 orebody. At Kencana, conditional simulation has provided a successful means to quantify uncertainties and risks associated with various data densities and reporting time periods. The results of this project have provided managers and planners with a clearer understanding of the likely variances and risks associated with predicting gold metal production at key reporting time periods based on data at the resource model level of resolution. With corporate requirements to adhere to mining budgets/quarterly schedules, this type of analysis allows a more scientific approach to estimating grade uncertainty in the mining schedule. Until now this has been difficult to quantify due to the extreme gold metal variability. The availability of this type of analysis allows a time-efficient rationalisation on redesigns of the mining shapes and effective communication of the likely uncertainties involved.

The Dutwa Nickel Project is a nickel laterite atmospheric leach project located in Tanzania that has been under development by African Eagle Resources plc (2012). A bankable feasibility study (BFS) has been progressed to evaluate mining of the resource (107 Mt at 0.92 per cent Ni) followed by hydrometallurgical processing on-site to make a mixed nickel-cobalt intermediate product. The unique relatively high silica contents in the Dutwa deposits, as opposed to limonite, which is more commonly occurring in nickel laterites, presented the possibility for beneficiation of the ores to enhance the leach feed nickel grades and provide economic benefits in terms of operating and capital cost efficiencies.Geometallurgical relationships, based on the results of an extensive variability metallurgical test work program for beneficiation and leaching, were developed for the BFS, which resulted in an improved understanding of ore classifications within the deposit and their responses. The geometallurgical information obtained has been instrumental in making key preliminary techno-economic decisions, such as forecasting whether or not mined material should be beneficiated and was ultimately used to drive the mine plan towards the prioritisation of areas within the deposits that delivered the best cost efficiencies and overall project economic outcomes.CITATION:Elkington, T, Lorenzen, L and Czerny, C, 2013. The properties of top slags play a very important role in secondary steelmaking. Fluxes should be chosen based on the ladle furnace (LF) slag requirements like viscosity, melting temperature, sulfide capacity, etc. CaF2 and CaO-Al2O3-based synthetic slags are the most used fluxes in secondary steelmaking to improve slag fluidity and interfacial chemical reactions. CaF2 is obsolete due to fluorine pollution and CaO-Al2O3 based slags have 40–50 wt per cent Al2O3 and 30–40 per cent CaO which is not beneficial for desulfurisation. Yet another drawback is that LF slag disintegrates into fine powder during cooling due to phase transformation C2S (2CaO.SiO2). Hence, there is a need for the development of low melting fluxes with high CaO content and the capability to prevent slag disintegration. The current work studied the effect of 0–9 wt per cent B2O3 on physico-chemical properties and characterisation of LF slags. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analyses were carried out to identify mineralogical phases present in slag and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis was done to understand the changes in bonds of B2O3 added LF slag. The characteristic temperature of slag was determined by a hemispherical method using high-temperature microscopy. Empirical models were used to calculate viscosity, break temperature, and sulfide capacity. FactSage™, ver 8.2 (by GTT-Technologies) simulations were carried out to find the equilibrium phase fractions and percentage of liquid slag at different temperatures. New phases such as Ca11B2Si4O22 and Ca2B3O5 were formed in LF slag with B2O3 addition. Based on the results, 0.5–1.0 wt per cent B2O3 was found to be sufficient to prevent C2S-driven disintegration of LF slag. Also, the melting temperature and viscosity of LF slag were reduced by adding 3–8 wt per cent B2O3 due to the formation of BO3 planar triangular structure and low melting eutectics in slag. Liquid slag started forming at a temperature as low as 800°C when B2O3 is >6 wt per cent. It was found that the sulfide capacity, viscosity, and break temperature of the slag decreased with increasing wt per cent B2O3. Based on the analysis carried out, B2O3 can be a promising fluxing material in secondary steelmaking, for improving the desulfurisation kinetics and valourisation potential of LF slag.

The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. A Seam deposit User oriented Mine Planning System (SUMPS) was developed by The Broken Hill Proprietary Company Limited (BHP) at its head office in Melbourne. It is one of the computer mine planning systems developed by the Corporate Data Processing (CDP) section of BHP. To date it has been employed in the feasibility study of four coal prospects for the BHP Group, including Gregory in central Queensland - Ham and Van Hoorn (1978). It was also used in detailed short term mine planning for Gregory. A recent application was in the feasibility study of Saxonvale, a multi seam coal deposit in New South Wales with seams up to 20 m thick. The other two applications of SUMPS were also on thick multi seam coal deposits. Development of programs for the underground sub-section of SUMPS is continuing. SUMPS was developed and implemented on mini computers with graphics and plotting peripherals. The company's philosophy towards computing is one of centralized development and project planning, with transfer of hardware and software to site once the mine becomes Operational.

The character of alluvial gold deposits presents severe difficulties, and sometimes limitations, on the extent to which metallurgical efficiency can be measured. Very little monitoring of metallurgical performance is practised. An indication of performance is often extracted from the comparison of production to the estimate. This is a dubious practice. The recovery efficiency of conventional practices, viz sluices, tables and jigs, falls off sharply below 0.2 mm. Field evaluation procedures tend to simulate these conventional practices. Thus the presence of fine gold may not be detected, particularly if obscured by clay. There is increasing evidence that fine gold could, in places, be present in sufficient concentrations to be economic. Most gold in paleoplacers is finer than 0.1 mm. There are established practices elsewhere in the mineral industry that may physically recover gold down to 5 microns in size and which could find application for fine alluvial gold.

For the past five years the University of Queenslandhas, through its various workshops, been preaching to Australia that there was a potentially hazardous situation from earthquakes for urban Australia. A few people outside The University accepted this, but largely the warnings fell on deaf ears.The 1989 Newcastle earthquake changed that per-ception. The most important lessons to emerge from Newcastle were (i)the realization that in continental areas small earthquakes cause widespread damage:(ii)the local geology of an area is of great importance in the damage done by an earthquake.These two factors clearly indicate that, in the future, we must take far greater account of the "Urban Geology" of an area. This paper discusses the need for urban geology and its impact on seismic risk and compares that with the traditional methods of assessing seismic risk.

Traditionally trucks have dominated haulage in open pit mines. Only recently have conveyors begun to be used in the long haul and high lift duties of surface mines. Steep angle conveyors are proven versatile systems for elevating or lowering materials continuously at steep angles to 90¦. This paper describes the design of a bucket-type steep angle conveyor that was developed as a joint research project between the Western Australian School of Mines and the Maanshan Institute of Mining Research in China. The steep angle conveyor can be used as a viable option for transporting blocky ore from open pit mines. A pilot conveyor was constructed and tested to determine its technical and operational feasibility. Furthermore, a computer model based on Matlab mathematical modelling software was developed to simulate the performance of the pilot conveyor. The model enabled to determine the design parameters of industry-scale conveyors to yield satisfactory performance. These conveyors become very cost-effective for those mines having large mine lives and depths greater than about 500 metres.
