The European Union has listed vanadium (V) as one of the critical raw materials for the transition to a future green society, as stated in the Critical Raw Material Act, written by Grohol and Veeh (2023). In the steelmaking industry based on V-containing iron ore, V is a possible by-product from the slag. A requirement for slags to be suitable for V extraction is a V content preferably above 8 wt per cent as V2O3 and a phosphorus (P) content below 0.1 wt per cent as P2O5. Hence, it is important to keep V in the slag phase while the P is moved to the metal phase during the steelmaking process.

"This paper provides an assessment of the current challenges in strategic mine planning and design and suggested approaches for addressing them. The specific challenges covered are: realistic quantification of downstream processes applied to orebody models to provide an integrated approach to mine design and optimisation modelling, estimation and simulation of geometallurgical variables and their integration into resource and reserve estimation and mine planning modelling, estimation and simulation of new variables for new forms of mining – deep mining, particularly block caving, and solution mining flexibility in planning and design to manage risk and minimise its impact information technology (IT) infrastructure and platforms for rapid online data collection, storage, access and processing.Most of these challenges require new types of data, variables, modelling and estimation methods. Foremost among the new types of variables and data are geometallurgical and dynamic rock mass characterisation variables. A reappraisal of the stratigraphy, new regional kinematic analysis and thermobarometric data allow a new interpretation of the metamorphic zoning and tectonic structure of the Upper Eocene high-pressure metamorphic core complex of northern New Caledonia allow a three steps evolution to be proposed : 1) subduction and understacking of previously thinned continental crust elements; 2) subduction blocking due to the crustal thickening; 3) crustal thinning and extensional detachment during the diapir-like uplift and unroofing of the eclogitic core. Steps 2 and 3 may be partly contemporaneous. Such a model accounts for the thermobarometric and radiochronologic data, and also for the weakness of substratum deformation during the emplacement of the ophiolitic nappe.

Geita Gold Mining Limited (GGML) is owned and jointly managed by Ashanti Goldfields Company (Ghana) and Anglogold (South Africa). The mine is currently one of the largest gold producing open pit operations in Africa producing 620 000 ounces of gold and mining in excess of 70 000 000 tonnes of material per annum. The mine currently has 2000 full time employeeÆs and a mine life in excess of 12 years. Geita Gold Mine is comprised of 11 different gold deposits situated in the Lake Victoria Goldfields of North Western Tanzania (Figure 1). The gold deposits are primarily associated with banded ironstone formations within an Archaean greenstone belt. Current global resources, including Inferred, stand at 129.5 million tonnes grading 3.91 g/t (16.2 M oz). Open pit reserves total 70.4 million tonnes grading 4.16 g/t (9.4 M oz). The majority of the gold resource is hosted by the three deposits (Nyankanga, Lone Cone and Geita Hill) within the æGeita TrendÆ a large and continuous (>4 km long) mineralised zone (Adofo, 2002). Geita Gold Mine commenced operations in June 2000, as the second large-scale open pit gold mine in Tanzania. The new workforce of 800 people had no previous experience in open pit gold mining. Since the start of the operation, Geita Gold MineÆs management ambition was to become a world leader in the application of best practice in all technical disciplines and in operational success. Staff development and training was identified as one of the major components in the company achieving its aim. Geita Gold MineÆs management has committed the necessary training staff, resources and the commitment of over $US 1 M a year to staff training and development programs for 2003 and 2004. The process and management of Geita Gold MineÆs mining geology staff training and development program is presented in this paper.

The scheme of rehabilitation of surface plant commenced in 1936, included the provision of improved and more hygienic changing and bathing facilities for the employees.At that time the Thompson's Shaft section of the British Mine was being prepared for a resumption of operations, and it was decided to repair and re-equip the existing building. Thus any new scheme adopted could be given a thorough trial, and the proved arrangement used as a basis for the contemplated new main changehouse on the North Section.Investigations were carried out to determine the most suitable arrangement for the Thompson's Shaft changehouse, to provide for a total of 120 men, with particular regard to the internal fittings and fixtures. Also, as the mining conditions were such that a large proportion of clothes worn underground by miners, etc., were wet by the end of the shift, the problem of drying these clothes in the availaole time from a man coming off shift to his commencing again some sixteen hours later was one of the most important to be dealt with.The changehouses in use on the North mine section of the lease were provided with racks around the walls for the men to hang their street clothes on, and a section was partitioned off to house the mine clothes and their drying facilities. The actual drying was carried out by means of hanging the wet clothes over racks between which ran pipe coils heated by means of hot water circulated from the hot water boiler supplying the showers.This method had proved to be far from satisfactory for several reasons, the main objections being:-

A solid electrolyte technique has been used to measure the activity of cobalt in liquid cobalt-gold alloys containing between 0.085 and 0.50 mole fraction of cobalt, and for temperatures from just above the liquidus to around 1550 K. The system exhibits positive deviation from ideality, both in the activities of cobalt and gold, and in the enthalpy and excess entropy of mixing. The results agree with previous measurements using a Knudsen cell - mass spectrometer technique, but differ from those reported for a gas equilibration method. The data have been used to calculate the activity coefficient of cobalt oxide in silica saturated iron silicate slags and to express the solubility of cobalt in such slags as a function of cobalt activity and oxygen pressure.

In-situ recovery (ISR) is accepted and applied across many geographies, and approximately 50% of the world’s uranium is currently extracted by using an ISR method (World Nuclear Association, 2014). The low environmental impact, the elimination of risk for mine workers and the fact that all of the lowest-cost producers of uranium use an ISR approach should raise interest from traditional miners (IAEA, 2014). However, the broader application of ISR to other commodities and mineral systems remains limited. A number of demonstration (experimental) copper projects have been undertaken (Sinclair and Thompson, 2015) with a few copper projects in Arizona being close to demonstration (Florence, 2018 and Gunnison, 2018). Evidence of very few economically operating ISR copper projects can be found (for example, the Russian, Uralgidromed OAO, built by the Russian Copper Company in 2005 and operated as an ISR facility from the Gumeshevskoye deposit (Russia Mining, 2018). A number of gold deposits, particularly paleochannel deposits, have also been considered for ISR, but, to the best of our knowledge, only limited demonstration and no commercial operations have been established, yet (Kuhar et al, 2018 and references therein).CITATION:Robinson, D J and Kuhar, L L, 2018. This paper describes the autogenous carrier flotation of 0 - 20 ¦m ilmenite using 40 -- 80 }tm ilmenite as carrier. Investigation is made of the influence of main technological parameters on autogenous carrier flotation. The mechanism of autogenous carrier flotation is discussed using extended DLVO theory. The main conclusions are as follows: 1. the smaller the fine particles the more easily they adhere.to carriers; 2. the selectivity of autogenous carrier flotation depends on the selectivity of adsorption of collector. In the autogenous carrier flotation of ilmenite/plagioclase mixture assaying 15.35 per cent TiO2, a concentrate containing 47.17 per cent Ti02 can be obtained by primary separation with a recovery of 93.05 per cent. In Australian coalmines there are a number of coal quality parameters that are measured by analysing samples from boreholes. The data points are used to generate spatial models of these parameters, typically using inverse distance as an interpolation method. Numerous additional boreholes are drilled which have geophysical logs measured downhole but from which no coal quality samples are taken. Full suites of coal quality analyses are expensive and time consuming to drill and sample. If geophysical proxies for coal quality could be used, this would greatly improve the accuracy of the resource estimation without additional cost.This paper examines two of the most important coal quality parameters – ash and volatile matter – and assesses the results of a number of geostatistical interpolation methods. The aim is to improve the accuracy of the interpolated models. Auxiliary variables from geophysical logs are also trialled to improve the estimation.A multivariate analysis of ash, volatile matter and several auxiliary variables of a selected coal seam was undertaken in a spatial context, using variography. This was used to construct a model of co-regionalisation that relates all of the variables as manifestations of an underlying geological theme.The traditional inverse distance interpolation approach was compared to ordinary kriging, universal kriging, co-kriging, regression kriging and kriging with external drift approaches. The relative merits of the six interpolation methods were compared by removing all points, one at a time and estimating at the thus known location. The mean error and the root mean square error were evaluated as a measure of bias and precision.This paper demonstrates that there is significant opportunity to improve the estimations of coal quality when using kriging with external drift. For example, the results show that when using the depth of a sample as an external drift variable there is a significant improvement in the accuracy of estimation for volatile matter. Furthermore, when using borehole wireline density logs as an auxiliary variable for ash content, there is improvement in the estimation of the in situ ash. The underpinning reasons for this are discussed in the context of the underlying geology and the physical properties of the coal. Worldwide, hard coal mining is being carried out at ever increasing depth, and has, therefore, to cope with correspondingly increasing methane emissions. About seven per cent of global methane emissions are caused by coal mining. Beside carbon dioxide, chloro-fluorocarbons (CFCs) and nitrogen oxides, methane is one of the most significant `greenhouse' gases. It is mainly through the release of such trace gases that the greenhouse effect is brought about. Reducing methane emissions is therefore an important problem to be solved by the coal mining industry. This paper begins by highlighting some of the fundamental principles of methane in hard coal mining. The methane problem in German hard coal mining and the industry's efforts to reduce methane emissions are presented. The future development in German hard coal mining is illustrated by an example which shows how large methane volumes can be managed, while still maintaining high outputs at increasing depth.

Sampling equipment manufacturers endeavour to ensure that the mechanical equipment installed in sampling systems are designed and manufactured to adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) or other standards relevant to the application. The mechanical parameters necessary to achieve these standards can be well controlled and requirements such as constant speed can be met through good mechanical design and engineering. However, when the equipment is installed and put into operation, the ISO compliance of the system is out of the hands of the equipment manufacturer and handed to the operator, who may be a generalist control system integrator.Making a sampling system perform according to standards, and being able to monitor and report on compliance require that the sampling system knowledge and the control integration is combined and applied in an integrated approach. Using a dedicated library of control routines developed for sampling can change a system from having compliant equipment to being a compliant system. Rheology is the science which deals with the deformation and flow of matter. Thus rheology is concerned with the flow of any material. The mining industry is concerned with digging things out of the ground, extracting the good stuff and throwing away the bad stuff. In the upgrading processes associated with mining, ie mineral processing, wet techniques are used where the primary material being handled is a particulate fluid, ie a suspension. After the processing operation, with the concentrates extracted, what is left behind generally is a wet material in suspension form, which may or may not contain reagents harmful to the environment. The amount of waste generated in any of the mining processes is large, in fact, the mining industry is the largest generator of solid waste in Australia. In order to minimise the waste generated within the industry it has become of interest to handle the particulate fluid wastes, or suspensions, at high concentrations, thus removing water and some of the reagents which may be harmful to the environment. The resultant highly concentrated suspension is a non-Newtonian fluid. Rheology deals with the flow of non-Newtonian fluids; therefore a combination of rheological understanding of high density suspensions, in conjunction with an understanding of the environmental problems being faced by the mining industry, can and has led to improved methods of waste disposal in the industry, ie waste minimisation. This paper describes the progress that has been made in the development of dry disposal technology in the mining and minerals industry in Australia.

Conventional polygonal and block modelling techniques inadequately represent the grade-thickness distribution of some narrow shear and stratabound gold deposits. The polygonal influence of high-grade drill intercepts can result in overestimates of resource tonnages at high-grade cut-offs. Although block modelling methods provide grade smoothing and a better representation of structural continuity, the technique can lack precise definition of ore width. An alternative method known as Spatial Object Modelling (SOM) has been developed on MineMap software to overcome some of these modelling issues. This method does not rely on a uniform cell size and allows grade smoothing between resource intercepts in three-dimensional space. The SOM technique creates grade-thickness bars on regular, user-defined spacings which allow easy visual comparison of raw intercept data to the interpolated model. Model cell values are readily transformed into isopachs, isopleths and resource perimeters for reporting and mine planning purposes.

How to monitor and control the support and surrounding strata system on a longwall face effectively is one of the major research problems in ground control. Based on observations on movements of the support and surrounding strata of face No. 2703 of Dongpang colliery, the relationship between the downtime related to support and surrounding strata and other influential factors is analysed systematically in this paper. Monitoring indices and control measures are then determined by taking corresponding downtime as an objective function. When the monitoring method, developed from the above findings, was used on face No. 2703, the downtime due to support and surrounding strata was remarkably reduced, and the face advanced Normally.

Deposition of uranium in the South Alligator river area has been influenced structurally by reverse faulting; and lithologically by carbonaceous shales and sandstones. Mineral assemblages suggest a mesothermal-epithermal epigenetic mode of origin. The ultimate source of the uranium and associated metals is probably in deep seated magmatism which is expressed at surface in the widespread penecontemporaneous vulcanity.

Laminar flow furnace techniques and thermal analysis were used to study the combustion of Kambalda nickel concentrate and Collie coal. The study was made to ascertain the suitability of the latter as a replacement for the fuel oil currently burnt in a flash furnace at the Kal- goorlie Nickel Smelter. The coal was found to ignite at temperatures between 500-600¦C which was the same as that required for the most reac- tive component of the concentrate, namely py- rite. The rates of reaction of both the coal and concentrate were dependent on oxygen con- centration. Sulfur dioxide hindered the combus- tion of concentrate and of coal, the effect on the concentrate being the more pronounced. The effects of moisture content and the tendency for spontaneous combustion of the coal were also noted.

A review of ground control procedures in Western Australian underground mines is presented. Geotechnical input into initial mine design and methods of ground control is rare. As a result, the frequency of unexpected rockfalls is comparatively high, with over three quarters of the mines adopting non-specialist ground control designs experiencing unexpected falls-of-ground. In contrast, mines that provide some level of specialist input into initial ground control design experience decreased rockfall frequencies.

The City of Kalgoorlie/Boulder is situated approximately 600 kilometres to the east of Perth (Fig. 1), and is the major regional centre of the Eastern Goldfields, supporting a population of approximately 25,000. The formation of Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines in 1989 brought the existing operat- ing entities adjacent to the city under common ownership and management. The Joint Venturers forming the management company are Homestake Gold of Australia and Gold Mines of Kalgoorlie (a Normandy/Poseidon com- pany). This traditional underground mining centre has been worked since 1893, yielding 40.8 million ounces of gold from ore with an average head grade of 10 grams per tonne. Historically the heart of the operation has been the famous Golden Mile located on the Eastern perimeter of the city, in the area known as Fimiston. The other significant operations that form KCGM are the Mt Percy Open Pit and the Mt Charlotte Underground Operation. KCGM's current production is 520,000 ounces per year, with the com- bined Fimiston operations (open cut and underground) contributing 400,000 ounces. The current expansion will increase production levels by a further 150,000 ounces. Traditionally 98 per cent of gold has been sourced from underground areas, however the recent upsurge of open cut operations is rapidly overturning this historical relationship.

On 8 July 1993, a landslide of about one million cubic metres of rock blocked the river Satluj near Sanjay Vidyut Pariyojana - Bhaba project and caused flooding into the Bhaba Power House (120 MW) resulting in suspension of power generation. The concerned authorities desired an early removal of the blockade by an underwater blasting operation into the over topping water to reduce the water level at the blockade and resume power generation in the power house. In the absence of underwater drilling, it was essential for the blasting technique to be used where no cavity to confine the explosive was required. For this reason mud capping and plaster shooting with directional throw were used and additional specially fabricated mild steel pipe charges were used under high current for an underwater trenching operation. By employing these techniques the river blockade was removed up to the required depth and on 8 September 1993 the Power House resumed the power generation.

Drill performance monitoring studies were recently completed at the Fording River mine, British Columbia. Microprocessor-based instrumen- tation and data analysis techniques were developed with the objective to improve short and long term mine planning. Data analysis permitted the identification of thicknesses and interfaces between soft/hard zones at depth based upon the recorded responses of the drill. Data clearly con- trast the soft coal seams and harder waste rock units based on variations in recorded drill rotary speed and torque, hydraulic downpressure, bail- ing air pressure and instantaneous rate of penetration. These parameters were monitored and recorded at 10 cm sampling intervals. Processed drill data was correlated with gamma logs, an existing means for locating coal seams and distinguishing between waste units. Current development of a pattern recognition module aims towards automated interpretation of drill data, identifying micro-and macro-geological and geomechanical rock mass characteristics. Delay between acquiring, processing and interpret- ing the drill data for practical use by mine personnel should be minimized. Integration of this technology with the mine's current main-frame based Mine Engineering Application System software will enable more accurate and timely annlication of the nrocessed drill data.
