Draglines have found wide application in strip mining coal seams down to 60m depth. A research Project funded through NERDDC has been underway during the past two years investigating the application of large draglines loading overburden into hoppers feeding into conveyor systems or off-highway trucks. This paper presents the preliminary results of these investigations and covers overburden characteristics, bucket spotting con- trol, bucket design, conceptual hopper systems, system application at representative mine sites, and broad process comparison. The studies have initiated new concepts in the extended use of draglines at deeper strip- ping depths. Alternate arrangements for dragline bucket rigging and bucket control aspects of dragline stripping operations offer productivity improvements. Extended use of existing draglines includes, draglines dumping into hoppers which feed large trucks or conveyors, trigger dump buckets rigging arrangements, and rear dump dragline buckets with integral grizzly bars. The paper details these suggestions, and points to specific areas where the most productive applied research is anticipated. Mine planning considerations detail the factors involved in selecting dragline bench heights in association with hopper operations.

The Porgera gold mine has made significant progress with the successful installation of a JK FrothCam image analysis system. The system is used to measure and control froth velocity on the scavenger circuit which has brought significant economical and operational benefits. The froth velocity signal, determined by analysis of the camera, is transmitted to the PLC that manipulates flotation cell airflow rate and cell level controllers to maintain a target froth velocity of 130 mm per second. Following on from a three-week trial installation in June 2000, a permanent installation was commissioned on the scavenger Outokumpu (OK150) tank cells. Further work is in progress on the rougher Wemco cells. This paper describes the evaluation of FrothCam Technology and its subsequent installation.

The mining industry in Western Australia is a large sector of the WA economy providing $12 billion (1993) of the export income for the State. Historically, mining in WA developed from traditional prospecting in the late-1880s leading to major underground operations by the turn of the century. Large open pits were developed in WA following World War II and became increasingly common since the gold boom of the 1980s. With the development of the open pits has been concomitant evolution of mining legislation, principally the Mining Acts of 1904 and 1978, which has been also accompanied by a practical evolution of the administrative system within the Department of Minerals and Energy. The mining industry has recognised the need for sound environmental management at mine sites, taking up the challenge and becoming a world leader in rehabilitation techniques. Any environmental management program in the industry has three stages: approval by government; management by the industry; and return to the State in an environmentally acceptable condition. The WA environmental requirements, procedures and industry performance in these three stages are discussed.

The Murrin Murrin deposit is located about 210 km NNE of Kalgoorlie and 50 km E of Leonora in the North Eastern Goldfields region of Western Australia at latitude 28¦ 50'S. longitude 121¦ 54'E on the Laverton (SH 51-2) 1:250 000 map sheet. The tenements are held by Anaconda Nickel NL. Geological investigations between 1994 and 1996 resulted in resource calculations being completed for the ten lateritic nickel cobalt deposits shown in Figure 1. At a 0.8 per cent nickel cut-off the resources at May 1996 for the nine deposits are 116.8 Mt at 1.10 per cent nickel and 0.082 per cent cobalt. The nickel-cobalt mineralisation is contained in a laterite profile developed over Archaean serpentinised peridotites. A bankable feasibility study has been completed and the project is scheduled to be in production by the beginning of 1998.

Evidence will be presented to show that borescope inspection of mine roofs is one of the most useful techniques available for stability assessments. ACIRL currently has four borescopes, comprising two fibre-optic units of 2.7 m and 4.5 m length and two optical rod units (introscopes) 6 m and 8 m in length. (The 8 m unit is not yet fully operational because of modifications needed to meet safety regulations). Using the fibre-optic units, photographs of hole walls or ends can be taken to record features. Roof lithology and crack patterns can be observed in roof holes from 25 - 60 mm in diameter. Several crack parameters are useful: type, location in the roof with respect to height and lithological boundaries, presence of individuals or zones containing crack clusters and the estimated amount of dilation. These data are readily computer- plotted to form "borescope logs". Provided that the holes remain open, a hole or group of holes can be re-surveyed at intervals to monitor crack development across or along a roadway, for example with respect to an advancing blind-ended roadway face.

The moisture content of iron ore is important in handling, stockpiling, transport and further processing operations. Typically these ores contain both `free' and `bound' moisture, the latter being moisture that is not removed in a conventional laboratory determination of moisture by air drying at 105¦C, and it is the free moisture that is important in dust control and ore handling. The CSIRO Division of Mineral and Process Engineering has previously developed and commercialised gauges, based on capacitance and microwave techniques, for the on-belt determination of moisture in coal and minerals. However, these gauges determine total moisture, and have a different sensitivity to free and bound moisture in the material analysed. Consequently, the accuracy of determining total or free moisture alone may be significantly affected by variations in the bound moisture content. One common problem for blasting in iron ore mines with significant weathering is the occurrence of large blocks of hard rock mixed with softer material. This situation causes a problem for blasting design and sometimes produces large boulders of rock that require a secondary blasting, as well as excavation difficulties. To minimise this situation, geophysical techniques were used to identify the hardest material amid the weathered material. To study the problem, seismic, ground penetrating radar (GPR), electrical resistivity and induced polarisation (IP) methods were used in an intensely weathered Brazilian iron ore deposit. The methods of GPR combined with IP, resistivity and seismic showed to be effective in modelling the contrast among hard, friable materials and soil. The results were used to improve the geological model and create more favourable conditions for the subsequent blast design. The blast design based on geophysical/geological models resulted in significant improvement in the fragmentation of the iron ore. This was achieved by the adoption of a specific drilling pattern for a given geological situation. With the new specialised blasting design the formation of boulders was eliminated.CITATION:Vieira, L and Koppe, J C, 2015. The benefits of fine size separation in magnetite concentration are detailed focusing on published research from various iron ore producers. Basic principles of fine sizing and advancements in screening technology are addressed. A chronological review of research is used to show the evolution of fine sizing applications in the industry, starting with studies that demonstrated the benefit of using fine screens to produce consistent lower silica concentrates, followed by improvements in fine sizing equipment that have made effi cient screen classification in ball mill circuits practical. Case studies are used to demonstrate how positive sizing with screens can be used to significantly shift concentrate ‘grind/grade’ relationships.

Manganese nodules cover great areas of deep ocean floor far from land, and have long been considered a major potential resource of nickel, copper, cobalt and perhaps manganese. A decade ago there was a period of intense evaluation of nodule fields, especially those lying between the Clarion and Clipperton Fracture Zones in international waters southeast of Hawaii. There, nodules are abundant and of high grade (average of 2.4% Ni+Cu+Co). The evaluation activity has since declined, but a recent agreement on lease boundaries among all interested parties may lead to a resurgence of work. Indeed, French and Japanese groups have pushed ahead with field and economic assessments.The Southwest Pacific, where there are large nodule fields in the waters of the Cook Islands and Kiribati, has seen considerable assessment of resources in the last ten years, especially through a major field programme of the Japanese Metal Mining Agency. The best prospect appears to be in the South Penrhyn Basin, in Cook Islands waters, where nodules are very abundant but of only moderate grade (1% Ni+Cu+Co). Using a cut-off of 5 kg of wet nodules per m2, Cronan (1989) and Cronan et al. (1989) have estimated the total resource to be a huge 110 million tonnes of Ni+Cu+Co.

The KR Process is a joint development by VOEST-ALPINE, Austria and its subsidiary company KORF ENGINEERING, Germany. This new technology allows production of hot metal on the basis of non-coking coal. The KR Process is based on the idea of separating the process steps realized in the blast furnace (generation of reduction gas, reduction of iron oxide and melting of the reduced iron) and including coking of coal. These reactions are carried out in two reactors: - the melter gasifier, where non- coking coal is coked and gasified into a high quality reduction gas and hot prereduced iron is melted. - the reduction furnace, where iron oxide is reduced by the reduction gas generated in the melter gasifier and discharged in a hot state. In order to prove the process a pilot plant has been set up in Kehl/ Rhine in 1981 with a nominal capacity of 60.000 tpy.

The economic feasibility of controlled district cross-cut recirculation is examined in this paper with particular reference to the most important mine ventilation network parameters. An algorithm is developed to express the annual cost of recirculation which is then compared to the annual cost of conventional ventilation using the University of Queensland Experimental Mine as a case study. The concepts of resistance ratio and volumetric efficiency ratio are introduced and used to analyse the economic feasibility of controlled recirculation within a mine ventilation network.

Laboratory-scale experiments were conducted in a mechanically stirred aeration vessel to determine the rusting abilities of aerated water in the presence of various catalysts compared to the industrially used ammonium chloride. The catalysts used were tartaric acid and citric acid, firstly by themselves, and then in later experiments mixed with ammonium chloride. From these experiments it was found that leaching of iron from reduced ilmenite in the presence of either tartaric acid or its sodium salt was much slower than in the presence of ammonium chloride. Citric acid or its sodium salt also give a slower rate of leaching than the ammonium chloride system, but citric acid and its sodium salt mixed in equal proportions produced a rate of leaching approximately twice as fast as the standard ammonium chloride system. When tartaric acid was mixed with ammonium chloride the leaching rate was found to be equivalent to the leaching rate of the same amount of ammonium chloride alone, thus indicating that tartaric acid made no contribution to the leaching in this svstem_

The Jameson flotation cell was developed jointly by Mount Isa Mines Limited and Professor GJ Jameson of the University of Newcastle. The cell has been used in a number of cleaning applications within Mount Isa Mines Limited. In 1989 Peko Mines tested the Jameson flotation cell at the Warrego concentrator to upgrade recleaner concentrate. 2 x 1.4 m diameter Jameson flotation cells were installed in 1990. This paper describes the testing, commissioning and operation of these Cells.

The importance of the accurate determination and interpretation of the bulk density and porosity of a given iron ore deposit is very often disregarded or neglected. Large amounts of time and money are spent on delineating and testing orebodies, and yet one of the most important factors in resource evaluation is sometimes estimated or, at best, determined from existing data from similar deposits. The Thabazimbi and Sishen South iron ore deposits are two well-known economical occurrences of high-grade iron ore in South Africa. Both these deposits formed as secondary enrichment of banded iron formation lithologies. Ongoing density studies on both these deposits are underway and results thus far proved very effective and necessary. Small-scale methods are used to determine average values for different ore types on both deposits. These values are used in resource estimation and geophysical interpretation.

The capacity of chlorine based solutions to rapidly and effectively dissolve coarse gold in oxide ores is well established. The inherent advantages of chlorine are high dissolution rates (10 - 100 times those of cyanide), and low cost. The high dissolution rates mean that coarse or poorly liberated gold may be dissolved over relatively short periods and hence ore particle size may cease to be such a critical factor. The cost of size reduction to allow adequate gold liberation in order to achieve an adequate gold recovery is less of a consideration when using chlorine than in traditional plant or heap leaching cyanide-based treatment systems.Because chlorine based solutions capable of dissolving gold evolve an unpleasant vapour phase with the potential for significant chlorine losses into the atmosphere, traditional heap leaching with active solutions being sprayed onto prepared heaps is not possible. The ore must be covered and the solution may be introduced beneath that cover through prepared injection `wells' and recovered through production 'wells'. The pit is flooded with active solution beneath an overburden or cover with the solution migrating from the injection 'wells' to the production 'wells' over a period of around five - ten days.

This paper presents the results of state parameter estimates in an active coal boiler ash storage facility using the most recent methods currently in use for cone penetrometer interpretation. State parameters estimates are also compared with the critical yield stress ratio approach, which is proposed as an additional liquefaction potential screening method. Recommendations are provided regarding additional in situ tests and laboratory tests that may be undertaken to improve the state parameter assessment and data produced for use in subsequent stability or liquefaction studies.

Since 1962, ferro alloy production in Australia has been concentrated at Bell Bay, Tasmania with a major expansion occurring in 1976. This concentration was based originally on the perceived requirements of the expanding Australian steel industry, but recent stagnation within this industry has seen Temco become progressively more export oriented.In 1984, approval was given for a $47 million uprating of facilities which will allow for the introduction of the latest technology to ensure high quality, low cost production in a highly competitive export market.

Coeur d'Alene Mines is a precious metals producer which is dedi- cated to growth through it's exploration and acquisitions efforts. We foster and support these activities by providing our staff with long-term financial support, the encouragement to proceed with their projects and ideas, and a firm belief that we will be successful. Coeur's corporate headquarters are located in beautiful, historic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our main mining operations are Rochester, locate near Lovelock, Nevada, Coeur Mine,located near Wallace, Idaho, and Thunder Mountain, located in central Idaho. Our Ken- sington Gold project is located about 45 miles north of Juneau in southeast Alaska. We have exploration offices located in Reno, Nevada, and Santiago, Chile. At this time, Coeurd'Alene Mines produces precious metals from mines located in the United States. Our Rochester open-pit opera- tion, which is 100 per cent owned and operated, is located in Nevada. Presently, this operation produces 5.5 to 6 million ounces of silver per year and 60-70,000 ounces of gold. We move 65,000 to 70,000 tons of rock per day of which about 23,000 tons is ore. The ore is crushed, stacked on permanent heaps and leached. The recovery is by Merrill-Crowe. Although the average grade is rela- tively low, 1.4 ounces per ton silver and 0.012 ounces per ton Au, the operation is very low cost. Our cost of production is less than $4.00 per silver equivalent ounce. Rochester is anunusual operation in that the crushed rock stacks without much compaction and the ores are easily leached. The final height on our heaps will be about 220', and overall recovery will be about 55 per cent of the silver and about 85 per cent of the gold. Reserves at Rochester are expanding and are now adequate for at least fifteen years of opera- Tion.

Longstanding occupational health challenges of the underground hard-rock mining sector require both an analysis of historical data to assess evidence of linkages between the source of the problem and subsequent illnesses, as well as investigating the means by which health risks to workers can be eliminated or minimised. This paper refers briefly to a recently established National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) sponsored Epidemiological Study into the incidence of Lung Cancer, contracted by mineworkers in Western Australia (WA) due to the inhalation of diesel exhaust fumes from 1996 to 2012. Thereafter it reviews current knowledge of the nature of the challenges facing those responsible for the health and wellbeing of underground hard-rock miners in WA, commencing with the recent categorisation of diesel exhaust as ‘Carcinogenic to Humans, Group 1’, by the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). An attempt is also made to explore how the challenge has changed with the adoption of more advanced engine technologies, including the increased generation of ultra-fine volatile organic and other nucleates, submicron carbonaceous agglomerates and toxic gases.The compounding effect of using the mine decline access entry as both the primary ventilation intake and haulage-way is also discussed, as is the need to develop a more appropriate metric for regulating diesel engine emissions. Finally the paper refers to ongoing in-mine research pursued by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) at its Diesel Laboratory in an underground limestone mine near Morgantown in the USA.CITATION:Jones, O, 2015. Conveyor belt haulage offers the advan tages of continuity of operation, minimum labour requirements, and the ability to handle large volumes of material over extended periods. However, breakdown of critical con- veyors in the system can cause undue and substantial losses in production output at the working faces, unless adequate surge bin capacity is incorporated in the haulage system. A conveyor belt simulation programme, code name 'Beltsim' was developed by Bucklen et al (1968) at the Virginia Polytechnic Institute in the U.S.A. and provides a quantitative measure of the performance of a conveyor belt network design. A limitation still exists with the computer programme and involves the inability of the programme to predict the necessary surge bin capacity to overcome conveyor belt downtime. The computer programme was modified to overcome this limitation, to simulate a con- veyor belt breakdown, and to provide a quantitative prediction of the surge bin capacity necessary to permit a modern mining system to operate effectively and continuously.
