The paper presents a model of a multigrade monitoring-management structure for support to decision making and management in real and extended time in mineral processing (MP). The model was created as a result of a long-lasting research, design and development of mining, computer integrated monitoring-management systems. Apart from the general explanations, the authorsÆ state in the introduction that efficiency of a system for support to decision-making and management in mineral processing is more difficult to achieve by conventional approaches, than by the fuzzy logic approach. Starting from the multiphase structure of process flows in MP, the following are process and monitoring-management oriented graphs. The graphs served as a foundation of the multigrade hierarchical fuzzy model for support to decision making and management in MP. Following the example of the monitoring-management system of the æRudnikÆ mine flotation plant, fuzzy logic implementation was shown. The key conclusions of the paper are that fuzzyfication of layers of the decision making and management model has full justification due to the complexity and dynamics of mineral processing processes, complications and often insurmountable difficulties concerning the precise description of real systems by conventional mathematical tools, variability of external influences, and the (general) non-linearity of the MP processes management criteria functions.

"The Corridor Sands deposit is situated approximately 190 km north east of Maputo, Mozambique adjacent to the paleo-mouth of the Limpopo River. This deposit is one of the worldÆs largest known economically viable resource of titanium, accounting for approximately one third of the global resource. As part of the pre-feasibility and feasibility study for development of the Corridor Sands project, various geological and geotechnical investigations were undertaken, selected results of which are presented in this paper. These investigations have enabled a detailed understanding of the material characteristics of the orebody as well as the tailings materials, such as the fines, to be developed. These material characteristics have had a significant impact on the selection of the mining and disposal methods currently being implemented."

A coal dust explosion is one of the most significant risks in the harsh and complex environment of an Underground Coal Mine (UCM). Reviewing literature, regulations and existing systems surrounding explosive dust management shows that there have been few advancements in managing this risk over the past 90 years. Legislation has remained relatively stagnant and minimal systems are implemented in the real world that can simplify, standardise and improve the effectiveness of UCM explosive dust management. To help bridge this gap, Corehesion, in collaboration with an UCM has designed, developed and implement an Explosive Dust Risk Mitigation System (EDRMS) utilising components of Business Intelligence (BI) that is capable of real-world use in industry. To do this the existing explosive dust management process at the associated research mine was evaluated to form high-level and detailed design requirements, focusing on digitally simplifying the procedure, not replicating it. The system was then iteratively and incrementally developed and implemented at the research mine to commence real-world use. The developed BI platform is compared with the existing process to highlight the advancements in performance transparency, efficiency and optimisation of UCM explosion mitigation. This comparison and evaluation of the real-world system implementation at the research mine demonstrate its success in automating procedure steps, providing a readily accessible source of data and enabling a proactive approach to planning and managing explosion risk mitigation. In addition to improvements just for the research mine, this EDRMS created directly address many Queensland regulatory audit findings. By finalising the total system and making the highlighted changes for standardisation, this BI system will have the adaptable capabilities for implementation across the UCM industry. As accurate data availability improves at UCMs, further work can be done to improve the systems’ optimisation techniques and integration of other risks.

The Prospect to Pipehead Tunnel is a component of the Sydney Water Board's multi-million dollar Drinking Water Quality Program to improve the quality of Sydney's potable water supply to meet revised national health guidelines. The tunnel project involves the construction of seven kilometres of 3.9 metre diameter machine bored tunnel which is to be lined with a three-metre diameter steel liner. The paper describes the fully integrated planning and design approach and management technique used to enable this major project to proceed to meet the requirements of a tight construction program.

‘Grade Engineering<sub>®</sub> is an integrated approach to coarse rejection that matches a suite of separation technologies to ore specific characteristics and compares the net value of rejecting low value components in current feed streams to existing mine plans as part of a system-view’ (Walters, 2017). Two of these technologies are directly recoverable through screening stages: Natural Deportment and Induced Deportment. The potential for taking advantage of “Natural Deportment” by size following blasting and crushing has been demonstrated for a range of ore types. Simple and low cost screening can in some cases generate a fine product with improved grade and a lower grade oversize which can be directed to leach or to waste. Where an ore body consists of many different ore types, the traditional approach of blending to metal grade will often add to complexity of treatment, which will reduce the effect of “natural deportment” by size.CITATION: Jokovic, V, Walters, P, Adair, B and Morrison, R, 2018. The current Queensland Government’s rehabilitation guidelines for post-mining landforms present a hierarchy of preferred outcomes for different areas within the mine site (see Figure 1). Within all areas, restoration of a ‘natural’ ecosystem is clearly prioritised as the preferred end land use, although it is not a mandatory practice. Beyond the official guidelines, there is also an implied preference for renaturalisation echoed in most environmental impact assessments and closure plans (Lamb, Erskine and Fletcher, 2015). In practice, however, ecosystem restoration does not extend to construction of a realistic topographic form, largely rejecting the ‘natural’ aesthetic implied by ecosystem restoration in favour of adopting a functional aesthetic in deference to standard engineering criteria.This presentation argues that the established disconnection between actual and implied landform aesthetics is indicative of a wider problem around end landform planning. It contends that such disconnects are the result of the impact of competing ‘ways of seeing’ (Bradley and Kearney, 2007) the same landscape, and reflect the struggle between, and inclusion of, these differing perspectives within the planning process itself. We propose that recognition of the complexity of landscape perceptions is key to improving post-mining landscape outcomes, and the misalignment between land use values and landscape aesthetics can be addressed by establishing an overarching framework for landscape preferences. The suitability of magnetic surveys flown at low altitudes to identify buried heavy mineral (HM) strands has long been accepted. This is despite the low intensity magnetic response often obtained from such strands. The fundamentals of the magnetic survey method dictate that the closer the instrument is to the source the stronger the response. As such the optimal elevation for the magnetometer is at or near the surface. Iluka sought to use a ground based magnetometer to aid in the exploration target generation process and allow accurate targeting of exploration drill holes. Following the initial trial Iluka recognised the potential additional application of data obtained by a ground based magnetometer over known strand deposits. The detail of the ground magnetic images can confirm the assumed strand continuity between cross-sections of close spaced drilling and can aid in the definition of the geometry of different generations of mineralisation. The ability to confidently determine that the deposit has not been truncated by post emplacement erosion of the mineralised deposit may enable reductions in drilling requirements as well as assisting mine planning activities. Iluka intends to investigate advanced modelling of the magnetic data to determine the level of strand geometry and HM content resolution that can be achieved from the ground magnetic survey data and its potential application in the mining grade control process.It is anticipated that the surveying of Iluka’s known resource deposits will provide the ability to correlate the magnetic response from new exploration targets with those from known deposits for a given depth, HM grade and mineralogy suite.

Many underground mine void spaces are not suitable for human entry due to unprotected roofs, instability or having an unknown safety state (eg if they are many decades old). Investigations of these voids may nevertheless be important for general mine safety, for example to detect propagating collapses or water accumulation, prevent accidental intrusion by new developments or drilling to reassess old spaces for re-mining. Robots are an ideal technology for investigating these spaces, especially flying, rotary-wing robots that can access and map vertical structures and spaces while avoiding rocks, water and mud that have accumulated on void floors. To operate in underground mines, we are developing customised unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as well as interactive 3D virtual models of the vehicles and their underground environments for controlling vehicle operation and visualising incrementally gathered survey data. Using a game/simulation engine to provide an interactive interface for UAV operation makes it possible to orchestrate external spatial information and video feeds with in-game cameras for optimal visualisation that is not limited to the position, orientation or field of view of cameras mounted on the UAV. First and third-person points of view with respect to the UAV are provided, together with 2D and 3D gaze tracking to provide effective interfaces for geology and mine engineering experts without the need for specialist UAV piloting skills. Ongoing work is addressing the provision of greater levels of autonomy for these vehicles to support mapping well beyond the line of sight of operators and geological characterisation of rock surfaces using sensors mounted on them, including miniature X-ray fluorescence and Raman spectrometers. Indigenous brown coals, which provide a readily available primary energy source, have played a significant part in the industrial development of Victoria. The deposits located in the Latrobe Valley compare in extent with other major deposits of brown coal in the world. Smaller but valuable deposits occur at Stradbroke, Gelliondale, Anglesea and Bacchus Marsh. Extensive drilling, aided by geophysical surveys, and detailed analyses of coal samples, have enabled the extent and quality of these Tertiary deposits to be Defined.

This paper will address this question from the point of view of a drill and blast engineer or researcher working in open cut and underground mining operations. The paper will establish a common set of reference standards for high-speed imaging and data capture, which engineers and researchers can apply when deciding which type of imaging technology is appropriate. It will present an overview of current image analysis technologies and practices in use across a range of appropriate scientific fields and draw lines of commonality of approach between these fields and the field of mining and blasting applications analysis and research. In addition, the paper will examine the different technologies from an image quality and data stream reference point, ease of operation, cost, and reliability parameters. Finally, this paper will present an argument for the hybridisation of established and new technologies which could provide a more beneficial approach to the use of imaging as a tool of quality control, research and analysis in the mining based industries. This will include a novel approach to digital high-speed imaging and data analysis in the field, which should deliver high-quality images and data analysis in a time frame that is more appropriate to the need for immediate action, analysis and problem solving.

During blasting body wave interaction with geometrical surfaces induces Rayleigh-waves which propagate along free surfaces, e.g. crack faces or delaminated rock layers. These Rayleigh-waves carry most of their energy within a very shallow surface layer and propagate with very little attenuation in real rock materials. The installation of a final cleaning column at Ok Tedi Mining Limited was carried out to increase final concentrate grade in order to reduce concentrate handling, shipping and treatment charges and to reduce penalty payments. To fast-track the project a decision was made to install a full-size column on one of the two parallel circuits, designed on information readily available and utilising the experience of mill staff and an engineering consultant, rather than delay installation while a pilot scale program was conducted. A 3.66 m diameter by 12.8 m high column was installed to produce 40 t/h of final concentrate from a combination of rougher concentrate and recleaner concentrate. The column design and sparger system were by Cominco Engineering Services Limited.

Coal/gas outbursts were one of the rather difficult safety problems faced in the coal mines of this Country, with coal fields characterized by frequent disturbances of folds, faults and pinch-offs. With average mining depth about 500m below surface, several such accidents occurred with up to 500 tonnes of coal outburst. In recent years, after a series of improving countermeasures had been undertaken, gas outburst accidents had been greatly decreased. The characteristics of gas outbursts in Taiwan coal mines include relating to coal petrography, mining depth and the other deformation forces. All these have been investigated, trying to determine the parameter of outbursts under natural conditions. The preventive countermeasures include predicting tests, de-stressing boring in coal seams, the emergency procedures during outbursts and certain improving options.

This is the time of year tor the presidential address, and with the present incumbent engaged in the coal mining industry, it will therefore come as no surprise to you that the theme of my address this evening is concerned with coal.There are other reasons for this apart from my contact with the coal industry. At present, coal is supplying considerable overseas revenue at a time when the remainder of the mining market is in a somewhat depressed state. That times will change goes without saying, if history is to be believed.However, so far so good for coal. My first reaction when The Institute indicated its wish that I be president for 1976 was to become deeply conscious of the honour bestowed on me.On consideration, I realized that very few past presidents have been intimately connected with the coal mining industry to the extent of indulging in it for lengthy periods as a full time occupation or, conversely, a part time interest for a long time. It also appears that not one had started their career in the industry. In my case, 'also, there were 8 very interesting years ,as a gold miner and metallurgist before commencing in coal.It therefore seemed appropriate to endeavour to discover ,why this should be so, as coal mining is now a very important part of a very important industry. What were the reasons why the industry took so long to emerge when there were ample reserves of easily accessible coal?Frankie and Johnnie in their bar room epic of the depression years concluded, and I paraphrase, that "their story held no moral, their story told no tale".
