Distal air-fall ashes are widespread deposits that may record volcanism many hundreds of kilometres from their source. They are characteristically thin, fine-grained and have a low preservation potential usually being either eroded, or reworked and incorporated in overlying sediments following deposition. The most likely sites of accumulation are deep sea, lake and swamp environments where low energy conditions favour preservation. Post-depositional alteration of predominantly glassy volcanic ash is commonly extensive hampering identification of such layers in the geological record. As a result air-fall tuffs are poorly represented in the rock record and furthermore are commonly misinterpreted. Southeast Queensland during the late Triassic hosted active silicic volcanism and a number of fault-controlled basins in which coal-bearing sediments were accumulating. Silicic volcanics of late Triassic age are represented by the Brisbane Tuff in the Brisbane city area, the Chillingham Volcanics to the south of Brisbane and extending into New South Wales, the North Arm and Mount Byron Volcanics to the north of Brisbane, the Aranbanga Beds exposed around Gayndah and the Agnes Waters and Muncon Volcanics which occur northwest of Bundaberg. Stephens (1986) interprets these Volcanics as the remnants of a major silicic igneous 'province which he likens to modern continental orogenic margins. The Ipswich, Tarong and Callide Basins of southeast Queensland all contain coal measure sequences of late Triassic age that accumulated in alluvial plain environments. A Dicroidium flora is common to all and palynol.ogical evidence indicates a late Triassic (Carnian) age (de Jersey, 1975; Stevens, 1981). The coal seams of the three basins are characterised by their thickness (up to 25 m) and the presence of abundant thin, laterally persistent, kaolinite claystones (tonsteins) that show a marked similarity of morphology, texture and mineralogy. Detailed studies of the Ipswich Coal Measures (Falkner, 1986) suggest a volcanic air-fall origin for the tonsteins of the Ipswich Basin. Similar.tonsteins from the Tarong and Callide Basins provide evidence for widespread silicic volcanism during the late Triassic in southeast Queensland.

In blasting, a few or many cracks are driven from the borehole into the rock. But what causes the cracks? The most common theory of breakage consists of two stages; first the shock wave causes radial cracks to form around the hole then the gases penetrate into the cracks, and widen them and make them longer. Another theory presented by Brinkmann suggests that the back damage is primarily controlled by shock and that the gas penetration is the mechanism controlling breakout of the burden. He did his experimental work using blasthole liners. Recent research at SveBeFo has examined this matter further. In a quarry a number of benching holes have been blasted simultaneously. In some of these holes tubular Swellex bolts were inflated and decoupled charges put inside the tubes without stemming. Other holes were identically charged but without the lining. Finally some holes were also stemmed. After blasting the cracks in the remaining rock were studied. There was no difference in crack lengths between holes charged normally (no stemming) and holes where the charges were inside the bolts. On the other hand when stemming was used, the crack lengths increased for some explosives but remained the same for an emulsion explosive. In another set up blasted granite blocks were charged in the same way as above. Then we could also measure the bore hole pressure. The pressure gauge consists of a small carbon resistor inside a steel cylinder. It is called LHM (Location-fixed Hydrodynamic Measuring Cup) and is placed at the bottom of the hole. A smaller exit hole from the bottom is drilled for the cables. The paper presents the technique and the results obtained from both the quarry blasting and the blasting of the blocks.

A two year program of research into the feasibility of long-hole drilling for improved gas emission control has been undertaken at Appin Colliery. State of the art equipment was employed involving cableless electronic surveying and down-hole motor drilling. The project involved the drilling of 1000 m long, in-seam boreholes in the Bulli seam and boreholes of similar length drilled cross measure and then in-seam along the underlying Balgownie seam. A new concept for gas drainage was defined, employing long-holes for both predrainage and post drainage.

Otago Schist and Klondike Schist are two Paleozoic-Mesozoic metamorphic belts on the circum-Pacific margin in which there has been a long history of abundant alluvial gold mining, but only minor hard-rock gold mining.   Modern exploration for hard-rock gold is ongoing in both belts, and the active Macraes mine in Otago (>2 Moz production) highlights the hard-rock potential of the geological setting of these belts. Hard-rock gold mineralisation in both belts formed in the latter stages of schist exhumation, after rocks were subjected to major regional ductile folding and then uplifted through the brittle-ductile transition. The majority of known hard-rock gold-bearing systems in both belts consist of well-defined, but generally discontinuous, vein swarms. Most Otago veins are hosted in steeply dipping post-metamorphic normal faults and fractures. However, the Macraes mine is hosted by a late-metamorphic shear zone, and much ore is sulphide-impregnated auriferous schist. Goldbearing veins in the Klondike schist are hosted primarily in extensional sites associated with post-metamorphic compressional structures. Some disseminated sulphide mineralisation is associated with Klondike veins and this is important as it extends the exploration target for these veins. No foliation-parallel late metamorphic mineralisation has been identified in the Klondike but exposure is relatively poor compared with Otago and both schist belts are highly prospective for deposits of this type.

Multistage slag treatment was carried out to investigate boron removal from metallurgical grade silicon. Boron is known to be one of the most difficult elements to remove from silicon. Depending on boron initial concentration, boron can be removed from silicon into certain level; most previous studies have attained final 50–100 ppmw (parts per million weight) boron in the silicon using slag treatment. The term ‘multistage’ refers to a process where the resulting silicon from the initial slag treatment is further refined multiple times using a new slag. In this study, an initial slag composition of 45CaO-45SiO2-10Al2O3 (wt per cent) was utilised. Using this technique, boron level in the silicon was expected to be gradually lowered because the new slag will always have more capacity to reach the equilibrium distribution coefficient (LB = (ppmwB)slag/(ppmwB)Si). The current study was carried out through combined thermodynamic calculations (using FactSage™ ver 8.2, by Thermfact Ltd, thermochemical package) and high-temperature experimentation. The thermodynamic calculations were carried out for reactions at 1500, 1550, and 1600°C for three different scenarios: 1. Single stage refining with varied slag to Si ratio. 2. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 1:1. 3. Multistage refining with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The multistage experimental work was carried out at 1550°C under inert gas atmosphere each time for 2 hrs, with slag to Si ratio of 2:1. The simulation results indicate that the boron distribution coefficient stay essentially constant with varying slag to Si ratio and temperature, around 1.8 to 2, and the experimental results measured LB in the same range, between 1.5 and 2.5. By harnessing this feature, the simulation showed that boron can be removed by approximately 78 per cent in each stage. The experimental result confirmed that the boron concentration in the silicon was reduced by a total of 97.8 per cent from its initial value using four stages of slag treatment, from initial 270 ppmw down to 6 ppmw.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

During the late-1980s crawler-mounted crusher units established their position in the aggregates industry. Between 1986 and 1994 about 700 units were delivered to customers all over the world for surface operations, mainly in Scandinavia and central Europe. The crawler-mounted units are popular among smaller crushing operators because they are versatile and easy to move between sites. In large quarries the greatest benefit is obtained by combining a primary crawler-mounted crusher unit with mobile belt conveyors which eliminates the need for costly haulage by dump truck. Savings of up to 40 per cent in production costs prior to secondary crushing have been achieved. Today the environmental aspect in quarrying is assuming ever greater importance. Besides being costly the dump trucks are also the major source of dust and exhaust fumes within a quarry. A complete face crushing system consisting of a crawler-mounted crusher unit and mobile belt conveyors can be electrically driven and can be equipped with dust encapsulation and dust collectors. A mobile crushing unit is not a new idea. From the mid-1950s onwards the mobile and self-propelled units have been built equipped with crawlers, tyres or walking mechanisms, with weights usually of 500-1000 t. Due to their massive size these unit are not mobile in the same way as the today's mobile units. It is not feasible to move them more than a few times a year unlike today's fully mobile units which are often relocated once an hour. This means that the massive units can not continuously follow the production face and their loading always requires a certain amount of haulage. Today the mining industry is facing new challenges. With low mineral prices and high labour costs, increasing productivity is essential for survival. New standards are also being set for the labour safety and the environment. Large research programs have been launched to meet these challenges. However, technology which can partly solve these problems already exist and is only waiting to be introduced into underground applications as well - the mobile crushing unit followed by belt conveying. As in surface operations the elimination of truck haulage also brings considerable savings in operating costs in underground mines and reduces the amount of dust and exhaust gases generated. An additional benefit especially in underground applications is improved safety. In an underground mine most accidents are caused by moving vehicles.

Human exploration of Mars has been on the horizon of scientific goals for decades now, and as part of the objectives of human missions to various planets, one of the possible goals is opening new economic frontiers by the potential extraction and utilisation of resources, eg mining minerals and using surface regolith (Neukart, 2024). A comprehensive understanding of surface morphology, lithostratigraphy, basic structural geology, and civil engineering technology is essential to conduct mining operations for resource extraction on extraterrestrial planets. For instance, proper assessment of the risks associated with excavation and infrastructure construction under unique environments such as low gravity, surface irregularities, and the presence of regolith is fundamental. Such knowledge has been accumulated through satellite imagery and numerical topographic data using remote sensing technology, as well as seismic surveys by the on-site lander (Knapmeyer- Edrun et al, 2021; Banerdt et al, 2020; Giardini et al, 2020). Recent studies show that Marsquakes could be caused by the release of strain energy generated by the contraction of Mars. In particular, Marsquakes occur around the graben where many faults exist and form regularly spaced patterns. This implies that Marsquakes occur when the stress field of the Martian crust is an extension condition, and normal faults appear on the surface. In this study, we focus on so-called graben structures, one of Mars’s common tectonic structures (Plescia, 1991; Banerdt et al, 1992; Hoogenboom Hagen, 2014). The study aims to provide additional information about the tectonic environment during the formation of such features and, in addition, the internal mechanical-rheological structure of Mars, revealed by the geometrical pattern of faults modelled and simulated in a laboratory environment.

Three transient phenomena have been observed and experienced in the operation of large solvent extraction mixer-settlers. These relate to the ability of the settler to discharge streams with low entrainments arising from different phase separation æproblemsÆ. The operation of large-scale laboratory and commercial solvent extraction settlers has been shown by a number of workers to be a dynamic process, especially at the feed end. Circulating flow patterns are common in all three organic, aqueous and emulsion phases. The circulating patterns in deep dispersion bands in long settlers are believed to form roll fronts that can travel down the settler length within the bounds of the dispersion band. Various physical models are proposed to illustrate the formation and movement of roll fronts within the dispersion band. Another transient phenomenon has been observed in commercial settlers operating without any dispersion band. Entrainment of the continuous phase in the advancing dispersed phase is at high and erratic levels. This supports the conventional separation model, which recommends the presence of a significant depth of dispersion band to æfilterÆ the secondary haze from the bulk separated phases. The third transient is the position and shape of the dispersion band within the settler. Large commercial settlers have been shown to exhibit high variability in both these aspects of the dispersion band. The elimination of all three transient phenomena in commercial settlers has been shown to be effective with an in-settler media of coarse size and moderate specific surface area. The effect of the media is two-fold: it dissipates both the circulating flows and the forward velocity of any roll fronts, and creates a stable deep dispersion band at the feed end that serves to trap secondary haze from the primary coalescence process. It is effective in treating both types of transients involving non-existent or excessive dispersion band depths. The media serves to enhance coalescence by providing a static surface of intermediate surface tension on which droplets can collapse. The random nature of the media also provides multiple stream splitting and re-combination, that presents further drop to drop and drop to media impingement, which in turn promotes coalescence.

The value of Australia's education services exports increased to over $15 billion dollars in 2009, placing education as the third overall export earner behind coal and iron ore; however there are concerns over the impact of emerging policies on the future of both the industry and the provision of mining education. Policies have impacts on the growing number of international rankings (or league tables) of mining jurisdictions and universities. A high position in such rankings might be used as a measure of perceived quality with benefit to those at the top and to the detriment to those lower down.    Top performing companies in the relatively new domain of sustainability have been shown to achieve better financial performance than their industry competitors, assisting them in attracting top quality committed staff, hence positioning themselves well for the future. The world's mining companies, jurisdictions and universities are now ranked with results in the public domain. It is argued as to the validity of the data or perceptions used in such rankings, but there is no doubt they are influential in determining the flow of dollars around the globe. By investing your pension fund assets in the shares of the top performing companies, by placing your exploration dollars in a country at the top of such a list of attractive jurisdictions, attending or recruiting from a University at the top of the rankings - risk must surely be reduced?   While savings and risk reduction can undoubtedly result from the introduction of new technologies developed through appropriate R&D (the other core activity of a university), the maintenance of a very high level of exploration and production performance through dedicated highly skilled staff every hour of every day quietly improves financial performance, while avoiding safety, environmental and/or community incidents (ie protects the 'triple bottom line'). As always risk reduction comes down to enabling quality people to do a quality job - through the actions of such people we can sustain the global mining industry and secure our social license to operate. However, there is global concern over where the numbers of such people, including those with the recently required skills in sustainability, are going to come from.   This presentation will discuss some of the complexity and interactions involved in the development of such rankings, the dangers inherent in their simple acceptance and use, plus indicate some of the directions mining educators might take to sustain and increase the supply of quality graduates to the global mining industry. Reuse of process water in mineral and coal flotation plants is widespread to effectively reduce freshwater consumption. However, the accumulation of the frother in the recycled process water is a growing problem as high remnant frother concentration often leads to undesirable overfrothing issues throughout the plants. Various approaches have been proposed by others to measure frother concentration, but none of them is used in flotation practice owing to the requirement of timeconsuming sample preparation steps and/or specialist training to operate and maintain. There is a pressing need for the development of a simple and fast frother concentration measuring technique to avoid overfrothing issues and to optimise the flotation process. The present paper presents two promising approaches to measuring frother concentration online. The first approach measures the concentration of alcohol type frothers based on the host-guest interactions between frother molecules and a formulated liquid. This method is simple and fast as it only requires mixing the formulated liquid with the water sample for up to one minute. The potential of this approach was demonstrated by determination of the residual MIBC concentrations at different locations across a coal flotation plant. The second approach measures frother concentration using a solid-phase extraction (SPE) process and a cryogen-free benchtop NMR spectrometer. Using this approach, both alcohol type and polyglycol type frother solutions can be analysed for concentration determination within 30 minutes. It has also been demonstrated that the concentration of individual frothers in a frother blend (ie MIBC and PPG425 in water) can be accurately analysed even in the presence of background chemicals. This technique has otential for real-time measurement of frother concentration as the whole process can be fully automated.

A large amount of wastes from the preparation plant is produced. The properties of these wastes vary depending on the mineralogical contents of the mother rock in which the coal is embedded. The waste quality depends on the method of mining and cleaning. The waste mainly consists of clays, quartz, carbonaceous materials, mica, pyrites and so on. About 55 per cent of coal-ash is now utilised and the remains are disposed of at the disposal sites, however, the life of the disposal site is limited. Moreover, it is difficult to find new disposal sites. Therefore, it is requested that the percentage of the utilisation of the coal-ash be increased in every field in Japan. So, it is very much available if the injection material for natural/artificial openings can be applied on the cement that is added to flyash. Among the man-made pozzolans, a flyash is probably the most successful component used in grout injection. When flyash is added to Portland cement concrete, the same kinds of oxides as those of the cement are being added. As an injection component, flyash acts, in part, as a fine aggregate and, in part, as a binding component. However, there is not a substantial alteration of the properties of the original component. From these points of view, in order to clarify to what degree the flyash content affects the properties of the injected grout mixture; different combinations of flyash, Portland cement and water were considered by means of several experiments.

Soil cover systems are routinely used to reduce acid rock drainage (ARD) from mine waste rock dumps and tailings impoundments. A technology for the analysis, design, instrumentation and monitoring of barrier-type (oxygen limiting) and store/release-type covers has rapidly developed and the number of covers under construction has grown extensively during the past ten years. Mine operators are currently investing in this relatively new technology with the expectation that these covers will reduce long-term liability with respect to acid generation, drainage and treatment costs. While the design life for cover systems may extend into hundreds of years, we have less than ten years of construction experience and proven performance. Some cover designs appear to be functioning well; however, the performance of many more is now being called into question. The paper presented herein evaluates the integrity of cover systems from a global perspective. Soil cover systems for the control of ARD are being constructed at mine sites located within high rainfall equatorial regions, deserts ranging from low to high latitude, humid temperate regions, and cold-continental climates. While the technology for analysis and design of soil cover systems is well developed, factors that compromise the performance of cover systems (in addition to the paramount issue of climate) relate to material selection and availability, cost and construction practices. Long-term performance is also strongly affected by physical stability (ie erosion), volume change (ie cracking, desiccation, settlement and freeze/thaw cycling), vegetation, soil evolution and ecological stability. This paper provides a review of the application of soil cover systems for the control of ARD. Cases where cover systems have been constructed with both success and failure are illustrated. General criteria and recommendations for cover selection, design, construction, and maintenance are provided.

Two-dimensional (2D) estimation approaches have significant advantages over three-dimensional (3D) approaches when dealing with a narrow vein- or layer-like geometry. The main motivation for 2D estimation is that bias due to non-additivity of grade is avoided. The various aspects of 2D estimation are illustrated by use of a case study from the 1A Shoot Nickel deposit at Leinster, Western Australia. The width of the 1A mineralisation is variable, and so are the angles of drilling intersection. Consequently, the variable of interest (in this case nickel grade) is not suitable for direct kriging because it is defined on non-uniform support. However, grade can also be defined as the ratio of two variables that are suitable for direct kriging: thickness and accumulation. In the 2D approach, tonnage equates to thickness and metal equates to the product of grade and thickness, also called æaccumulationÆ. In the simplest approach we can independently krige accumulation and thickness and derive the grade by the ratio of the two resultant estimates. The thickness and accumulation variables must be in a consistent projection orientation, for example a horizontal projection in the case of steeply inclined mineralisation like 1A. Because the density is not constant across the 1A (and most other) deposits, the issue of density weighting is also discussed. The impact of the correlation between grade and length, or grade and density are important issues in implementation of 2D estimation. The circumstances under which these correlations need to be taken into account (by co-kriging) are reviewed. Finally some comments are made on the final use of the resultant 2D estimate for mine planning purposes.

In April 2013, Rio Tinto Kennecott Copper’s (RTKC) Bingham Canyon mine experienced what is arguably the world’s largest ever in-pit slope failure. The failure initiated along a major, continuous, low-strength bedding fault, named the Manefay bed, and comprised approximately 145Mtonnes of rock and waste dump material. Initial East wall slope deformations were detected some months prior to catastrophic slope collapse by RTKC’s slope monitoring systems. However, the failure mechanism was different to that which had historically been experienced in the prior more-than-100 years of open pit mining. Failure occurred as two separate events, the initial one likely consisting of a frictional failure of rock materials along the Manefay bed itself, before a second phase of failure occurred, which included a large mass of old rail dump material. The combination of these events led to a much larger failure run-out than had been anticipated by the RTKC team which led to loss of, and damage to, mining equipment and infrastructure as well as significant interruption to mining activities. Due to the diligent monitoring of the slopes no safety impacts were experienced at the mine, and as such the details and learnings from this failure can readily be shared with the broader mining and geotechnical industries to avoid similar recurrences elsewhere. Understanding the slag composition-structure-property relationship remains challenging due to the amorphous nature of slag melts and the difficulty of high-temperature experimental investigations. Since the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slag system is maybe the most important slag system for various hightemperature metallurgical process, the present research employed high-throughput molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on the entire composition region of the CaO-Al2O3-SiO2 slag system to determine physical properties like molar volume, density and diffusivity, structural properties such as distribution of different oxygen types for each simulated slag melt. The obtained slag properties result from the simulations displayed good consistency with experimental data, underscoring the reliability of the MD simulation as a novel tool to predict reasonable slag properties and to study slag behaviour from atomistic insight. The simulated results demonstrate a near-linear relationship between molar volume changes and composition, highlighting the predominant role of oxygen atoms, which is attributed to the significantly larger size of oxygen compared to other cations in the slag melts. This disparity in size leads to oxygen ions occupying most of the space in slags, thereby playing a major role in determining the overall molar volume. The simulation results of slag density revealed a decreasing trend with increased SiO2 content and identified a local minimum at constant SiO2 when Al2O3 content increases, also consistent with established slag density models. Furthermore, the simulated oxygen self-diffusion coefficients reveal a strong composition-structureproperty relationship, where an increase in CaO content enhances slag diffusivity, while a minimum in diffusivity is observed near a CaO/Al2O3 ratio of unity. The diffusivity minimum also corresponding to the local viscosity maxima, indicating effective simulation of charge compensation effects and dynamic characteristics of slag melts. The simulated distribution of oxygen types in slag — bridging oxygen (BOs), non-bridging oxygen (NBOs), free oxygen (FOs) and tricluster oxygen (TOs) — reveals a composition-dependent pattern: BOs peak near CaO/Al2O3 = 1, NBOs and FOs are abundant in CaO-rich areas with NBOs peaking near the Ca3SiO5 composition, FOs in the CaO corner, and TOs predominantly in the Al2O3 corner, highlighting the complex interplay of network formers and modifiers for the charge compensation effects on the slag’s structural properties. The successful application of MD simulations in this study paves the way for a powerful approach to explore the complex relationships in multicomponent slag systems and bridges the gap between mathematics modelling and experimental observations in high-temperature metallurgical processes.

The Rum Jungle mine was operated by Territory Enterprises Pty Ltd who mined uranium on behalf of the Australian Government with operations spanning the period from 1953 to the final closure of the mine in 1971. In addition to the extraction of uranium from the open cut pits, copper, manganese and lead were mined and processed at Rum Jungle. During the latter part of the operation, and after the closure of the mine, environmental studies were carried out which were aimed at determining the causes of the pollution at Rum Jungle and identifying a rehabilitation strategy for the mine site. These studies identified sources of heavy metal and acid pollution and proposed a rehabilitation strategy which consisted of 1. recontour, construct impervious covers and controlled surface drainage on, and revegetate three overburden heaps,

The Hauraki Volcanic Region of the North Island developed between 18 and 1.9 Ma. Initial andesitic volcanism from 18 to 12 Ma was followed by 12 to 1.9 Ma volcanic activity that included rhyolitic, dacitic, andesitic, and basaltic compositions, with a gradual migration of activity to the SSE. Early andesitic volcanism evolved over the course of 8 m.y. to more silicic compositions; this trend was reset and repeated by post-10 Ma andesitic volcanism. Early and later andesites are otherwise remarkably similar in trace element composition. Rhyolites have the most diverse compositions, suggesting a major role for crustal input in their formation.

Energy Resources of Australia Ltd - Ranger Mine is located about 255 kilometres east of Darwin in the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory. The Ranger project is surrounded by Kakadu National Park which is on the UNESCO World Heritage list. . Ranger Mine operates the largest uranium mine and processing plant in Australia. It is designed to produce 3000 tonnes of uranium oxide per year, but presently is producing a little less than one half that figure due to the depressed uranium market. The safety performance of the employees and Ranger as a whole continues to improve. The lost time injuries (LTI) have significantly reduced from 74 in 1985 to five in 1994. The total days lost due to LTIs have gone from 1543 to 14. These significant improvements have reflected directly on workers' compensation premiums in which a four-fold reduction has occurred. It is estimated that the actual monetary saving to the company is about $1.3 million per year and directly reports to the profit of the company. There is also an obvious and significant reduction in the less quantifiable costs such as the suffering of the injured employees and cost to society. The paper will review the various initiatives introduced and assess their effectiveness. Performance improvement is primarily dependent on the commitment, introduction of various initiatives and the subsequent change in workplace culture.

PT Nusa Halmahera Minerals (PT NHM) is an Indonesian joint venture company owned by a subsidiary of Newcrest Mining Limited (75 per cent) and PT Aneka Tambang (Persero) (25 per cent). PT NHM operates two underground gold mines, Kencana and Toguraci at the Gosowong mine site in North Halmahera District, North Maluku Province, Indonesia.The Toguraci underground mine development commenced in 2011 with ore production commencing in 2012. Water temperatures ranging from 50°C to 80°C were encountered in the Toguraci open pit associated with the structures containing the gold bearing veins and are believed to be fed from a relic volcanic system one to two kilometres below the mine. Underground development and production has continued to intersect these structures with the result that an integrated programme of geological, hydrogeological modelling and operational project work has been required to dewater the mine ahead of the descending stoping fronts.This paper will detail these programmes.CITATION:Lawolo, R, Isles, J, Evert, J, Valenza, A and King, S, 2017.
