The Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) Fimiston Open Pit is mining through a dense network of disused level workings and open stopes of greatly varying sizes. The condition of the stope crowns and remnants is often unknown, and ultimately these structures become a significant proportion of the production floor and pit walls. Significant seismic events and occasionally rock bursts often occur in the underground workings. Seismicity is becoming an issue to the viability of the KCGM Fimiston operations. KCGM needs to take a leading role in understanding mine-induced and regional seismicity. The seismic system trials were initiated in the Fimiston Open Pit in 1996 using the ISS system. The initial system included two triaxial geophone arrays and two triaxial accelerometer arrays installed into two boreholes. The main objectives of the trial were to investigate the suitability of the two types of sensors and the detectability of seismicity in the pit. The trial was regarded as a success and the system has been expanded and improved. The current system consists of 12 triaxial geophone and accelerometer arrays and nine uniaxial geophones. The 12 triaxial arrays are installed in nine boreholes drilled from the pit and the nine uniaxial geophones are installed from underground level workings about 660 m below the original surface elevation. The system is designed to provide seismicity coverage for the entire pit area that is about 2.7 kilometres long, 1.5 kilometres wide and about 300 metres deep. The accuracy of the source location has always been a challenge due to the existence of the dense concentration of stopes and lack of the sensors. It is uncommon to have direct ray path for the seismic waves to propagate to the sensors across the strike, hence sensors have been located along strike and under the old workings. This paper discusses some of the challenges associated with seismic monitoring near mine remnants and seismically active faults. The results of the seismic monitoring are presented, and contrasted to results of three dimensional boundary element numerical modelling. The impact of the seismicity upon pit slope stability is briefly discussed.

Copper and gold mineralisation at Batu Hijau is directly related to quartz veining and wall rock alteration that developed in close spatial and temporal association with multiple tonalite porphyry intrusions. To its advantage with respect to the study and better understanding of the evolution of the porphyry system, Batu Hijau has comparatively minor late alteration and mineralisation overprints. This paper summarises results of detailed geological logging, petrographic studies and geochemical analyses of diamond drill cores from the deeper sections of the Batu Hijau porphyry system (ie its roots). At 11 am Monday 8 September 1997, the successful detonation of the 5/9 Mass Blast at Pasminco - Elura was signified by the subsiding of æMt KevinÆ (a 15 m high earth fill mound). The blast was in response to earlier mine subsidence, which holed through to the surface affecting future stability of underground workings. The blast was a first for Elura which fires small tonnages regularly to avoid rapid oxidation of the ore. This paper discusses the strategy and the considerable planning that went into EluraÆs first blast of this magnitude in order to succeed first time round.

Reduction of Iron Content from Silica by Gravitational Processes In this research work, it was attempted to reduce the iron contents (Fe2O3) in silica sample which was provided from Shenin silica mine using gravitational processes including jig machine, multi gravity separator (MGS), shaking table and spiral. The silica sample contains 93.75 per cent SiO2, 0.44 per cent Fe2O3, 2.78 per cent Al2O3, and 0.08 per cent TiO2 and the Fe2O3 has to be reduced to about 0.1 per cent or less than 0.02 per cent. Mineralogical studies and XRD analysis indicated the presence of haematite, pyrite and goethite as the major iron impurity phases. Mineralogical studies of polished and thin sections yielded that the degree of freedom of silica is more than 80 per cent in the range of -300 +212 mm. After elimination of fine particles, at first nine tests were carried out on crusher product (in two size fractions), wet rod mil product and scrubber product by means of Jig Machine. The best results were obtained with about 0.15 per cent Fe2O3 on rod mill and scrubber product which was not desirable. Thereafter 7 tests were carried out using shaking table; the best results were obtained with about 0.14 per cent Fe2O3 on rod mill and scrubber product which was not desirable. MGS showed the worst result in order to iron removal from silica which was not desirable. Finally 9 testes were carried out using spiral whish is the best gravitational separator for elimination of iron impurities from silica. The best result of spiral tests were achieved on scrubber product. In this test concentrate weight percent and its Fe2O3 grade were 82.32 per cent and 0.085 per cent respectively. Finally a test was carried out using 2 stages of spiral in order to develop flow sheet. In this test concentrate weight percent and its Fe2O3 grade were 78.8 per cent and 0.1 per cent respectively. This product can be used to produce float (clear flat) glass.

Australian contract mining as it is known today had its origins in the early-1980s. Before this time there were numerous examples of underground mine development, and specifically shaft sinking being carried out by contractors. However, these were typically international contracting companies who came to Australia for specific projects. Growth in the underground mining industry in the 1980s opened up the opportunity for contractors. Mine owners had a need for contractors who could bring technical and operational capabilities to a project combined with capital in the form of equipment. In the early years the contracting industry was dominated by smaller players who focussed on mine development. The relationship between mine owner and contractor was loose and typically contract documents were rarely referred to. Through the 1980s and 1990s the underground contracting industry in Australia grew to where today there are over 20 underground contracting companies operating in an industry with an estimated annual value in excess of $1 billion. Of these 20 companies approximately five dominate with annual turnovers exceeding $100 million. Underground contractors now provide all facets of underground mining including development and production. Over the last 20 years the underground contracting industry has been able to consistently lower costs to mine owners through a combination of:equipment productivity, labour productivity, and technical innovation.

Cable bolts and rock bolts are used as primary and secondary anchoring systems in many underground mines. Reports on the premature failure of cable bolts and rock bolts due to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in underground coalmines have been increasing in the past two decades. The previous studies found that the SCC in both rock bolts and cable bolts occur as a consequence of atomic hydrogen diffusion into the material, which is known as hydrogen-induced stress corrosion cracking, HISCC (Craig et al, 2016; Wu et al, 2018b). While research to understand the process of SCC occurrence in underground mines is still required, finding a prevention solution to protect the bolts from HISCC is crucial. In this study, we analyse a variety of commercially available coatings for steel corrosion prevention, including barrier coating (ie epoxy, polyester TGIC) and sacrificial coating (hot-dip galvanising). We test the coating on coupons manufactured from rock bolts and cable bolts used in the coal mining industry.

The sedimentery basins of this region developed in the collision zone of the Pacific Ocean plate and the continent. Stresses were transmitted thorough wedge-like lithospheric blocks, such as the Okotsk Sea, East Kamchatka, Aleutian and 2 other smaller blocks. Compression and inversion were more active at the boundaries: P ; P3 ; N1 ; and Z N in places. ? Every text book for blasting in Japan says that Hauser's law can be applied for practice. But recently it came true that there was no historical record about him and no actual datum of his own or other's to testify. According to his theory, the funnel ratio N = r/W in crater test is inversely proportional to the rock strength and proportional to the explosive amount: where r is the radius of crater and W is the burden. But experiment showed the opposite result, and revealed new information. Two kinds of experiment, crater test and boulder blasting of mortar, were carried out to investigate the effects of rock properties on blasting. The material used for test 1 and test 2 was a mortar block (60cm)3 cube, 4 vertical faces of which were used for crater test. The results from Test 1 and test 2 were summarized as follows. The funnel ratio ranges between 2.5 to 4.5 in proportion to rock strength and burden. The standard ratio of 1, reported by Hauser, was not observed in any instances. It was also noted that the funnel ratio is independent of the explosive amount. The material used for boulder blasting, test 3, was a mortar block (40cm)3 cube, in the middle of which was located a vertical borehole for the explosive charge. The results of test 3 were as follows. The necessary explosive amount for boulder blasting is in inverse proportion to the mortar strength. Fragmentation and throw are proportional to the mortar strength.

At Hilton Mine, 18 kilometres north of Mount Isa, the silver-lead-zinc sulphide bodies have undergone strong deformation in the form of folding and later faulting and brecciation in the hangingwall region of the mine. Variation in grades and widths over compara- tively short distances causes problems regarding accurate sampling of orebody exposures in underground development, and in defining confidence limits for the extrapolation of ore intersections in ore reserve calculations. The paper gives a preliminary insight into the problem of obtaining representative samples for exposed orebodies and discusses the sampling techniques employed. Results gained from these sampling methods could not be verified due to lack of individual bulk samples for comparison but strong evidence for precision was provided. Original grade information for a potentially viable ore deposit is gained from surface drilling, and initial ore estimates are calculated from the resultant ore widths and grades. A microcomputer based expert system is presented for fast and cheap mineral identification. Because of the increasing pipularityof and interest for minerals and precious stones (selling, hobby polishing, collecting, teaching etc.) we pointedly deal with gemstone identification. In most cases only some fundamental data are needed to identify a mineral sample (or precious stone) if we know how to use these data. The important, characterizing data of the well-known minerals are stored in the data-base of our program-system. The visible and measured optical and physical properties of the sample are compared adequately with the stored data to get the result, the name of the examined mineral. The system works in a simple, friendly way - asking questions, understanding answers - so that no special computer knowledge is necessary to use it, only the answers should be typed in. The main advantage of the system is that only relatively simple and fast measure-ments are required. Based on these measurements a fast, reliable identification is processed on a cheap com-puter running a sophisticated program-system. The MINTEST system handles even those cases when the tested mineral cannot be determined based on the given input data.

Sampling is often the most critical part in process analysis. When the mean of a continuous lot, such as a process stream within a given time interval, is estimated by calculating the mean of several samples, the uncertainty of the estimated mean depends usually on the sampling strategy. Three different strategies can be used: systematic, stratified or random sample selection. The standard deviation of the lot mean is different for these methods so that systematic sampling usually gives the smallest and random sampling the largest standard deviation. Pierre Gy developed a method where the sampling errors of one-dimensional lots for these three strategies can be estimated from a variogram, which is calculated from a variographic experiment, ie from a set of one-dimensional time series measurements with fixed sampling interval. While variogram is an excellent tool for characterising and displaying the variability of autocorrelated processes as function of time, the sampling error estimation from it is quite laborious, however. In this work an alternative method for estimating the sampling errors was developed. The process is divided into strata of equal sizes, varying the length of strata similarly to variographic analysis. For stratified sampling the standard deviation estimates are obtained by analysis of variance and for systematic sampling by fitting a linear regression line to each stratum and calculating the residual variances. By pooling the individual variance estimates the variance estimates that are corrected for autocorrelation are obtained. The new method was tested with simulated and real data sets having periodic, random and/or drift fluctuations. For stationary processes the results agreed well with the results of the GyÆs variographic method. The method can probably be generalised to estimate the sampling variance of higher-dimensional lots.

Australia has, and faces, a growing problem with regard to the ability to meet the demand for liquid fuels from indigenous petroleum resources. The position for natural gas is better but there is no room for complacency. Since the coal resources are relatively extensive, interest in the prospect of producing liquid fuels from coal is in- creasing. The approaches to the production of gaseous and liquid fuels are briefly reviewed and the present status of coal conversion technology is discussed. Many problems remain to be solved and it is estimated (in the USA) that another 8-10 years will be required before any of the processes for liquid fuel production are considered sufficiently efficient and viable to go to a demonstration plant. Coals represent complex feedstocks and the effects of variations in coal properties on oil-from-coal processes are not fully understood. The thermal efficiencies of various coal conversion processes are considered in relation to their impact on coal requirements. The production of Australia's present requirement for liquid fuels by the only commercial process in operation would require a four-fold expansion in the local consumption of coal. Any assessment of the suitability of oil-from-coal processes currently under development overseas for Austra- lian coals and requirements must take heed of the differences in coal properties and motivation. The economic via- bility of processes for producing oil from coal will continue to be uncertain because of the large difference between the World price for crude oil and the actual production cost.

The Mt Todd Gold Project is located 42 km northwest of the township of Katherine within the Northern Territory of Australia. It is situated in the southeastern portion of the Pine Creek Geosyncline. The Batman gold deposit, the largest of several deposits at Mt Todd, hosts an identified mineral resource of 92.9 million tonnes (Mt) grading 1.4 grams/tonne (g/t) as at 31 December 1993. Host rocks at Batman are assigned to the Early Proterozoic Burrell Creek Formation, comprising greywacke and siltstone interbedded with shale. Gold mineralisation is associated with a very broad zone of sheeted and stockwork quartz-sulphide veins that occupy a corridor of intense brittle fracture and faulting. A conceptual model of formation involves the dilation of joints and micro-faults within overlying sediments during sinistral movement along a basement shear zone. Synchronous granite intrusion generated convective circulation of crustal fluids through the sedimentary pile resulting in the formation of auriferous quartz veins within favourable structures. The Batman zone of mineralisation is not directly related to fold structures which typify several other major gold deposits within the Pine Creek Geosyncline.

Reliable face support pressure is necessary for shield driven tunnels in cohesionless soils to prevent excessive ground movements. This paper presents experimental work on stability of a tunnel face using transparent soil models aiming to obtain magnitude of tunnel face minimum supporting pressure, failure pattern and extension of failed zone. A model tunnel was preinstalled in transparent soil which was supported at the face by means of water pressure. Tests were performed by reducing supporting pressure until collapse occurred. Model tests were sliced optically with laser sheet and images were captured for every decrement in tunnel supporting pressure. Later, these images were analysed by digital image correlation (DIC) and vector fi elds of incremental displacements were obtained. Values of minimum support pressures were given for different cover/diameter (C/D) ratios. Geometry of the failure zones depicted for different (C/D) values and appeared to be of chimney shape with a limited extension front of the face. A minimum support pressure was achieved with support pressures as low as 10 ± 1 per cent of the effective vertical stress at the tunnel axis. The stability of the tunnel face was related to the coefficient of active earth pressure with C/D ratio having a small effect on the magnitude of required pressure at collapse. In general, results of the study were in agreement with current knowledge of full-scale situations.

Considering the capital outlay, running costs and inherent difficulties of backfilling operations at depth the benefits need to be clearly established, quantified and then exploited. Expansion of Vaal Reefs Exploration and Mining Company towards even deeper, highly faulted ground, and the process of establishing codes of practice for the management of rockfalls and rockbursts, required that a sound support strategy be formulated. This paper describes the derivation of an overall backfilling strategy on Vaal Reefs. Use was made of experience gained over some 12 years with backfilling. Numerical modelling was used to estimate potential benefits of backfilling the deepest mining areas still to be extracted. In exploiting a probably unique opportunity, two contiguous mining areas bounded by the same major geological structures, were compared. One was extensively backfilled and the other not at all. Shaft sinking through a backfilled stope added another dimension to the database.

The green energy transition is speculated to cause an increase in the demand for raw materials while recycling rates are improving; discoveries are required to maintain supply. Geological remote sensing offers a cost-effective way of exploring mineral resources. While satellite and airborne imaging are routinely used for exploration targeting, a gap remains at the outcrop scale. Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is advantageous for large-scale regional mapping, typically performed from satellite or airborne platforms. Accurately mapping geological lithologies remains challenging in inaccessible areas, such as rough terrain or mine sites. Proximal sensing techniques can boost geological activities’ reliability, safety, and efficiency in exploration or during mining activities. It also generates objective, reproducible results and valuable raw data that can be archived, further processed, and re-interpreted. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging of outcrops has steadily increased during the last decade due to sensor development and better processing routines. There is often a big technology gap related to mineral mapping, integration of images and spectra (reduction in manual identification of minerals and types) and hyperspectral data visualisation through remote sensing. TEXMiN Foundation, in collaboration with its industry partner Dassault Systemes Foundation, carried out the project, ‘Developing Hyperspectral Image Processing and Analysis, build a rich library of Hyperspectral images of a vast range of minerals from India which will help in increasing prediction accuracy of mineral deposit for mining exploration’.

Despite extensive oil exploration in"Western Australia over the past 12 years no commercial oil fields have yet been found. A total ' of 66 test wells have been drilled throughout the State but only Rough Range No.s.. 1 and 1A have produced oil in significant quantities. Active oil exploration is now in progress in the" Canning, Carnarvon, Perth, Bonaparte Gulf and Officer Basins. Test wells have been drilled' in ,all of these except the Officer Basin, where the subsurface stratigraphy is still unknown. Large .areas of the other four have hot yet been drilled. It, is- probable that. commercial oil deposits will eventually be found' in these basins as they contain thick marine sequences, and have structures 'suitable for.,the. entrapment of oil. .

The Australian glass sand industry produces some 2.8 million tonnes per annum of silica sand, of which about 2.0 million tonnes are exported and the rest is for the domestic market. Approximate production rates for each Australian state are listed.The variety of processing methods used in the currently exploited deposits reflects the size, location, and characteristics of the various deposits and the requirement of the end market/s. The industry uses to a large extent equipment developed for the separation of mineral sands, particularly as it applies to low grade heavy mineral deposits, where low cost, high capacity and metallurgically efficient equipment has proved eminently suitable for the production of the low value glass sands.The requirements of the domestic market, as well as those of the present and potential export markets are discussed covering quality requirements, distribution channels and other factors critical to success.

Stawell Gold Mines operates the Magdala underground mine in western Victoria, Australia. Several orebodies are extracted by longhole open stoping at a depth of 900 m below the town of Stawell. Some stopes are backfilled with cemented slurry rock fill (CSRF) to ensure stability, increase recovery of ore reserves, minimise dilution of ore grades, and add value to the project. StawellÆs simple CSRF system is described, including the novel equipment used to minimise capital costs. Design criteria, operating procedures, monitoring systems and results are discussed in detail. Practical aspects are considered, including lessons learnt about barricades, overbreak and segregation. The economics of CSRF are discussed, including capital costs, operating costs and the total cost per ounce of gold poured. Options for mining with and without CSRF are compared in terms of return on investment and net cash flows. Examples demonstrate the method used to calculate æbreak-evenÆ stope ore grades which determine whether or not CSRF will add value in different circumstances.
