In 1556, Agricola noted that "a prudent owner, before he buys shares, ought to go to the mine and carefully examine the nature of the vein, for it is very important that he should be on his guard lest fraudulent sellers of shares should deceive him"(1). In today's world, the owner rarely has the opportunity to visit the mine and, instead of reading about the `nature of the vein' in annual reports, prospectuses, government publications, et cetera he sees the words `reserves' and `resources'. Unfortunately, the subject of reserves and resources has become increasingly complex and Canadians, along with their counterparts in Australia and elsewhere, are still struggling with definitions which will attempt to cover all conceivable circumstances from national or regional resource endowment to the material to be extracted next week from a given stope or open pit bench. The providers and recipients of reserve and resource data are: - Government agencies who are concerned with questions of national endowment, strategic use of raw materials and other questions of public policy. - Stockholders who have a vested interest in the basic assets of their companies. - Financiers who are concerned about the security of their loans. - Regulatory bodies whose function is to protect a frequently naive investor from unscrupulous practices. - Management, at head office and on-site, who need basic information for decision-making, whether it be to open up a new mine, expand or close an existing operation, acquire or merge with other entities, or, more mundanely, for routine mine planning. To satisfy their demands with unanimously accepted definitions is a formidable task but, it is my impression that, little by little, a concensus appears to be growing within the industry.

Variable bench heights, interaction with underground workings and a steeply dipping orebody are challenges faced daily by geologists at Xstrata Zinc’s Black Star Open Cut (BSOC) Zinc/Lead/Silver mine in Mount Isa, Queensland.BSOC has been in operation since late 2004 and was developed to extract the surface extents of the Zn/Pb/Ag mineralisation mined in the underground lead mine. To date many large scale stopes and extensive development drives have been intersected and successfully mined. The stratigraphically hosted orebodies strike in a north-north westerly direction, dipping ~75° west. Ore production from the pit is currently at 4.5 Mt/a.Historically, sampling was conducted using a multiple spear technique from blasthole cuttings. This method proved to be relatively reliable when blasting benches at a consistent height, but a requirement to vary bench heights to safely collapse and then mine through underground workings reduced sample representivity to unacceptable levels.The purchase and commissioning of a production rig which had been converted for reverse circulation (RC) has allowed for the flexibility of a small rig, with the capacity to easily drill 48 m holes while ensuring sample quality. Sample quality is not the only benefit of introducing RC grade control. By collecting grade control data well in advance, informed decisions can be made by planning, drill and blast and mining departments weeks beforehand, rather than hours before firing. Additionally, seeking operational value to offset higher drilling costs has proved positive with benefits including increased confidence in orebody wireframes, accurate tonnage and grade for proceeding five benches along with the ability to representatively test metallurgical response on a tight grid spacing.

Bacterial leaching of museum grade chalcopyrite and chalcopyrite concentrates at low sorptive relative humidities (55-91 per cent rH) was demonstrated. Optimum release rates were 13 and 27 mg/gram/100 days copper (Cu++) at 91 per cent and 80 per cent rH and 12 and 33 mg/gram/100 days iron (Fe++) at 80 per cent and 73 per cent rH for concentrate and "pure" chalcopyrite respectively. The optimum copper release rates occurred between 73 per cent - 86 per cent rH and 30-40 mM acid concentrations. Bacterial copper leaching rates were some twenty times slower for emersed copper concentrates, at low relative humidity, compared with submerged cultures. Bacterial copper solubilization was almost quantitatively inhibited above 150 mM acid levels (< pHO.8).

The Legacy Way Tunnel was constructed from Toowong to Kelvin Grove in Brisbane, and is the first large-scale underground excavation in the Bunya Phyllite in Brisbane. The Legacy Way Tunnel is 4.3 km in length, comprising two mainline tunnels excavated by a tunnel boring machine (TBM) with 46 connecting passages excavated between the mainline tunnels for egress provision and services. The Legacy Way Tunnel passes through two geological formations, the Bunya Phyllite and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The Bunya Phyllite is the dominant formation of the Legacy Way Tunnel, extending for three quarters of the tunnel prior to intersecting the Normanby Fault Zone (NFZ) and the Neranleigh Fernvale Beds. The NFZ forms the contact between the two formations as part of the Brisbane Metamorphics, which underlies the majority of Brisbane City. The development of the geological model and the understanding of the ground’s reaction to tunnelling was an iterative process. The tender phase investigation data has been supplemented with additional design phase investigation boreholes, geophysics and walk overs. Aerial photograph interpretation coupled with borehole data allowed the development of the domains along the length of the tunnel. Early excavations for the spoil conveyor tunnel and borehole data from subsurface instrumentation installation provided the first construction phase data followed by the commencement of tunnel boring machine (TBM) excavation. Routine cutterhead inspections coupled with ongoing reviews of the predicted geology resulted in clear response triggers to selection of segment types while detailed inspections in passage locations provide the initial classifications for segment removals.CITATION:Bennett, C and Norbert, M, 2014. Mine site restoration, involving the re-establishment of original ecosystems, is a far greater challenge than revegetation, which simply aims to stabilise the site and to give it a green appearance. One of the challenges is to establish a simple yet effective measure of restoration success. A potentially useful approach is to focus on particular groups of plants or animals which are likely to provide a general indication of the state of the ecosystem in which they occur. Ants have been used extensively by the mining industry in this context, particularly in northern Australia. Ants are likely to be useful bioindicators because of their general importance in the Australian environment, and because of the many linkages they have with other parts of the ecosystem. Moreover, ant community structure responds to stress and disturbance in predictable ways, and therefore provides an interpretable measure of ecosystem change. This is illustrated by a study of ant recolonisation at Ranger uranium mine. However, the extent to which ants reflect the responses of other ecosystem components is poorly documented. This is currently the subject of a collaborative project between OSS and CSIRO.

The composition and volume of geothermal fluids in New Zealand offers considerable potential for the extraction of various metals and minerals, as well as being a source of heat energy, steam and gases, and for use in generating electricity. While extracting products from geothermal fluids is technically feasible, positive economics is the key driver for commercial success; however, there is no assessment of this opportunity that identifies simple, cost-effective processing technologies and provides a greater understanding of the economic viability and barriers for implementing such technologies. Effective domaining is fundamental to geostatistical modelling for grade control. Through analysis of lithological, structural and alteration logging data, effective groupings (domains) can be identified and employed for estimation or simulation purposes.The poor definition of domains can adversely affect the grade control model resulting in a misinterpretation of the optimal ore-waste boundary and ultimately reduces the quality of recovered ore. The implementation of an appropriate domaining strategy is therefore expected to improve recovery and reconciliation.A thorough understanding of the geology of the deposit and adequate sample data is required for selecting domains. For new deposits, a resource drill database and resource model may be the only information available. Where extension to a previous operation is taking place, historic grade control, mapping and exposed geology may be used to improve domain selection. Preconceptions about domains, should they exist, need to be re-evaluated and tested to ensure they are fit for the purposes of grade control.While mining progresses, the domain model is re-evaluated to ensure that the previous interpretation is still suitable for the present configuration and geology. The grade control process, being iterative, lends itself to regular review and continuous improvement as further data is collected during the grade control cycle. Regular updates to the geology model, mapping, geostatistical data analysis and review of variography will provide indications of a changing domaining environment.Narrow vein gold deposits, which may have several factors influencing mineralisation, present considerable domaining challenges. Blasting is a critical task in the development of an open pit. The formation of stable slopes is also essential to the safe and economic extraction of ore. The objectives of a mine blasting department are often considered to be in direct conflict with those of the geotechnical department. This should not be the case. Personnel in the various mining departments need to understand that their goals are the same û to optimise safety and cost-effectiveness of the operation. Blasting has the potential to damage rock that is to remain in situ by generating either excess vibration, and/or pressure. These damage mechanisms are described and guidelines with respect to blast design to minimise the potential for damage are given. A rock mass could be expected to be subjected to varying degrees of damage by blasting, including both intensity of damage and also the extent of damage. These issues have potential to impact significantly on geotechnical design considerations. It is therefore important for the practitioner to define what constitutes damage. In the context of mining, it is recognised that there is a need to balance the requirements for efficient excavation with those of forming stable and cost-effective pit walls. It is therefore important to have a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) against which the performance can be bench marked. These would include cost and time, both of which may be influenced by very diverse factors such as drilling, explosives and their performance, fragmentation, excavator and haul truck performance, requirements for batter clean-up and safe working practices. KPIs are identified and discussed in this paper.

The comprehensive processing of raw materials and the tendency to waste-free production require the combination of various methods of concentrating mineral resources. Magnetic separation, an ecologically clean method of concentration, is one step in the technological cycle of ore processing, and cleaning and classifying of raw materials. Separators with superconducting magnetic systems cooled by liquid helium are the novel equipment for practical concentration. Recently, high-gradient (HGMS) and open-gradient (OGMS) magnetic separators using the effect of superconductivity have appeared. The separators of the first type are expedient in the head-end of the technological cycle, as they are most efficient for processing of particles 100 ¦m and greater in size. In this case the main task is to obtain pure tailings with a minimum amount of the useful component. This method allows the essential reduction in the cost of the subsequent crushing and grinding, because only the magnetic concentrate is directed to further processing. The separators of the VGMS type are used more efficiently in the final stages of the concentration cycle to condition the end product. The present work is devoted to the theoretical and experimental investigation of the motion of weakly magnetic particles in the working chamber of superconducting separators of the open-gradient magnetic separator (OGMS) and HGMS types. The flat OGMS is equipped by a magnetic system with NbTi racetracks cooled by liquid helium. The chamber is divided into zones by partitions parallel to the plane of the magnetic system. It is shown how, depending on the number of the zones and their depths, the extraction function of the OGMS varies and the transition from the OGMS to the HGMS occurs. The particles 2 mm and less in size are considered. The extraction parameter distribution of the particles was measured for a multicomponent weakly magnetic ore. The existence of bias in samples taken by cross-stream sample cutters has been investigated using three-dimensional discrete element method (DEM) modelling. Detailed quantitative information on overall extraction ratios, size specific extraction ratios, missed and extra sample components can be made by comparing a reference sample to the actual sample. A key advantage of using this modelling approach over physical experimentation is that the reference sample can be measured on precisely the same portion of the stream of material as the actual sample, thereby allowing the elimination of a significant fraction of the variability and allowing statistically significant results to be obtained using many fewer replicates. Quantitative analysis of results broadly supports the commonly-used rule that the cutter aperture should be at least three times the nominal top-size of the material being sampled, but does not support the commonly-used rule requiring increase in cutter aperture if the cutter speed exceeds 0.6 m/s. Sampler performance can be understood in terms of the balance of forces in the congested region of material formed by the slowing of the particle stream due to collisional interactions around the mouth of the cutter.

Argyle Diamond Mines Pty. Limited (ADM), manager and operator of the Argyle Diamond Mines Joint Venture (ADMJV) will recruit approximately 400 employees during 1985 to operate the new large-scale, open-cut diamond mine and treatment plant being developed at Argyle, in the East Kimberley Region of Western Australia. These employees will live in Perth or environs and will commute to work at Argyle via chartered jet aircraft. On site, they will be accommodated in self-contained single person's quarters, with central messing and recreational facilities. Rostering systems have not been finalised, but it is likely employees will rotate through a cycle of 14 days at site and seven-days on leave in Perth. ADM spent three years evaluating residen- tial options before deciding to commute its workforce from Perth. Another 70 senior staff will reside in Kununurra (the nearest established town, 250 km from Argyle) and commute to the mine daily by air.

The installation of on-line analysis systems in the open-pit mines of the Public Power Corporation SA (PPC, the state-owned electricity entity of Greece) is considered to be the key-parameter for performing improved quality control and blending/homogenisation of the produced lignite. In order to investigate the accuracy of these systems under the site-specific conditions of the Greek lignite deposits, a research project was carried out. This was necessary since there is lack of experience in using on-line analysers in mines that produce a fuel of such a poor and largely fluctuating quality. After thorough market research, a dual energy gamma ray transmission on-line ash analyser was installed in Kardia mine of Ptolemais û Amynteon Lignite Centre, which is located in West Macedonia, Greece. The initial results obtained after the realisation of a series of dual-comparison trials (ie using two series of reference values that allow three-way comparisons) pointed out several problems that obstacle the achievement of high accuracy on-line measurements. More specifically, the measurements obtained by the analyser were higher than the concentrations determined by the two laboratories when the ash content was lower than 12 per cent (in wet basis). On the contrary, when the ash content was higher than 12 per cent, the measurements of the on-line analyser were lower than the concentrations determined by the laboratories. In other words, the range of the measurements obtained by the analyser was narrower than that corresponding to the lab analyses results. Therefore, the use of this on-line analysis system under the site-specific operating conditions of Kardia mine does not guarantee improved quality control of the lignite fed to the mine-mouth located power plant. Most probable reasons that explain the above-mentioned problems are the following: The frequent and widely ranging fluctuations of the chemical and mineralogical composition of the lignite transported by the conveyor belt, especially as far as its calcium content is concerned. This result from the nature and the origin of the mineral matter co-excavated with the lignite, which varies from calcareous marls to sands and clays rich in aluminium and silica minerals. The fluctuations of the lignite quantity transported by the conveyor belt. The change of the linear concentration of iron contained in the fabric of different belt parts.

Coal mining has an impact on the water management of the water scarce Upper Olifants River Catchment. A prefeasibility study was carried out by Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited to establish the water supply and demand in the catchment. A geohydrological model was used for the coalfields to determine the stored water and excess water available. Two distinct collective and treatment systems were proposed for the Witbank and Middelburg municipalities to treat excess water from the Anglo Coal and Ingwe Collieries Limited. The Emalahleni Water Reclamation Project for Witbank was initiated first. Water management and treatment experience gained at Anglo Coal was the cornerstone to develop the collection, treatment and distribution system. A full enquiry was issued to Keyplan, Veolia, Bateman Africa and IST Technik to construct, commission, operate and maintain a 20 ML/day desalination plant to treat acidic, saline mine waters to a South African National Standard (SANS) 0241 Class 0 potable water. After the technical and financial adjudication, Keyplan were awarded the contract. An integrated regulatory process was adopted through consultation with all the relevant regional and head office staff of the Department of Minerals and Energy, Department of Water Affairs and Forestry and the Mpumalanga Department of Land Affairs via an authorityÆs steering committee. A rock engineering evaluation was done to select both the plant and waste disposal sites as all possible sites are undermined. Various contracts are required with the individual mines for water supply, the Emalahleni Local Municipality for the delivery of potable water and for the disposal of wastes.

The potential for iron ore in the Central African Archean belts has received much less attention by comparison to their equivalents in other cratonic regions of West Africa, South Africa, Australia and Brazil. Historically, iron ore is known to occur in South Cameroon and North Gabon with significant iron ore deposits (eg Mbalam in Cameroon, Avima in the Republic of Congo, Minkébé, Bélinga and Boka-boka in Gabon), having been the subject of geological exploration programs carried out by government institutions and exploration companies. Although the presence of strong aeromagnetic anomalies, undeniably related to the presence of greenstone belt formations, has been recognised, this study is the first attempt to assess the potential of banded iron formations (BIF) in the Northern part of the Gabonese Republic in the region between Minvoul and Minkébé (>10.000 km2). Deep lateritic weathering, inaccessible equatorial rain forest and high operational costs are some of the reasons why only limited exploration has been undertaken in the area. This work aims to improve the geological knowledge and to highlight the potential for iron ore of the eastern margin of the Ntem Complex units dated between 3.3–2.7 Ga. Field work showed a series of mafic rocks (amphibolite, anorthosite and gabbro), schist and BIF (described as itabirites in neighbouring areas). Samples from Minvoul BIF showed an extensive and deep weathering to powdery hematite revealing the presence, in thin sections, of iron oxides including magnetite, hematite and martite, primary and secondary quartz, garnet, hornblende, anthophyllite, cummingtonite and epidote. Mineral assemblages and coarse grain size suggest a metamorphic grade ranging from medium to upper amphibolite facies. The existence of known economic iron ore deposits in neighbouring regions combined with an extensive weathering enrichment process are promising factors for potential iron ore discovery in this remote area.

In recent years there have been significant developments in the tech- nology available for blast monitoring, analysis and simulation. Progress in these areas has been achieved through research conducted by explo- sives manufacturers and independent research groups from universities and mining companies. Miners are increasingly keen to exploit this tech- nology to help them design blasts which make optimum use of explo- sives to produce easily excavated muckpiles for the minimum possible cost. The art of blast design in the future will increasingly depend on an adequate understanding of the nature of the rock mass, the perfor- mance of explosives and the characteristics required of the muckpile to suit the chosen excavation machinery. Despite recent advances in blast simulation and the prediction of blasting performance, the best way to determine how a particular explosive will function relative to other explosives is to conduct properly designed and monitored field trials. This paper discusses recent work at Mount Thorley Colliery which demonstrates that field blasting trials can be monitored and analysed to provide quantitative data on the relative performance of bulk explosives. Techniques used in the trials included the sampling and analysis of explo- sives, insitu measurement of VOD, monitoring of near and far field vibra- tions, high speed and still photography and survey measurement of muckpiles. These techniques provided data for the analysis of throw, swell, fragmentation and burden movement together with data on the consistency and robustness of different explosive products. The blasting trials allowed both the shock and heave energy of various explosives to be observed in the field and led to the derivation of design rules for the use of differ- ent explosives at the mine.

Treatment processes are outlined for the recovery of rutile and zircon from the heavy mineral-bearing sands on the east coast of Australia. With the exhaustion of the higher grade deposits and the imposition of more rigid specifications for the finished products, strict metallurgical control has become necessary.A description is given of the methods used by The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited to control the operation of suction dredging, of wet concentration using fans and spirals, and of dry separation using high tension and electromagnetic processes. By applying these methods a plant designed for an output of 15,000 tons of rutile per year has been tuned to produce over 20,000 tons of rutile and a corresponding amount of zircon.Details are given of (a) the method of drilling to determine the extent and grade of the ore bodies, (b) a simple electrically-timed pneumatic automatic sampler, and (c) the methods developed for the physical estimation of quartz, rutile, zircon, ilmenite and "others" in the products of plant operation.The method used for calculating the metallurgical balance and the forms used for the reporting of production results are presented.Examples are given which show the value of this detailed production and metallurgical control of plant operation.INTRODUCTIONThe organization which is now known as "The Titanium Alloy Manufacturing Co. Pty. Limited" (T.A.M.Co.)-a subsidiary of National Lead Company-commenced operating at Yamba, N.S.W., in 1935. A mixed natural concentrate was at first simply dried and bagged and later was upgraded by the removal of silica and the lighter heavy minerals on shaking tables and, after air-drying, was bagged for export. At that time zircon was the most wanted constituent.

The evolution of economic precious metal and copper-gold deposits in high-level igneous terranes is dependent on very efficient fluid focussing. This is most readily achieved by contemporaneous deformation, igneous intrusion and hydrothermal activity. Mineralisation in these environments generally occurs in fault and fault-vein arrays developed in the cover sedimentary and volcanics sequences above older regional scale fault systems. Such reactivated fault systems are particularly prone to developing tile complex fracture arrays, extreme local dilation and dramatic increases in permeability that are necessary to efficiently focus hydrothermal fluid and produce large mineral deposits. The arc systems of tilePacific rim are typically structurally and tectonically complex. At any given period in the evolution of an arc system, it may be dominated by extensional, compressional or strike-slip deformation. Indeed, it is common for the tectonic environment to change repeatedly through the development of a single arc segment. As a result, structures formed in one tectonic environment are commonly complexly reactivated in quite different environments later in arc evolution. These complexly reactivated structures have greater potential to localise extreme fracturing, dilation and fluid flux than primary structures. Application of this knowledge to practical exploration requires an understanding of the primary geometry of the controlling fault systems, the fault movements during reactivation, intrusion and mineralisation, and the consequent location and geometry of dilational sites. Simple 2D lineament analysis and targeting on lineament intersections does not suffice. Chemical processes that results from structurally focussed fluid flow may also contribute to permeability enhancement and further enhance fluid flux. Two main types of chemical feedback are important. The first involves selective dissolution of minerals during alteration and tile consequent production of increased porosity and permeability. The second occurs where alteration changes the mechanical properties of tile rock mass, especially where it leads to a greater propensity for fracture (eg by silification). In near-surface environments (< ~1 km), geomorphic processes complement fault systems in focussing fluid flow to develop sub-horizontal bodies of mineralisation, such as the giant Ladolam gold deposit (>42 million ounces of gold).   Along with classification schemes which stress crustal level, host rocks and alteration assemblages, the styles of high level 'epithermal' and reated deposits must also be considered in respect of their controlling co-active fault structures. Such structural understanding, combined with understanding of tile chemical processes involved (eg host rock reactivity), provides a major tool for exploration particularly in terrains obscured by deep weathering. Geological interpretation based on integration of field mapping with magnetic, radiometric and other remotely sensed imagery provides a powerful complementary tool to the traditional geochemical and geophysical targeting techniques. Timely and effective geological input is capable of reducing exploration risk and providing a more cost-effective basis for drilling and development. Examples of deposits associated with fault reactivation in extensional, compressional and strike-slip settings within arc systems are discussed in this context.

The Collie River catchment, located approximately 200 km south of Perth, covers an area of around 2830 km2 and is the source of run-off to the Wellington Dam, an important irrigation water resource for the Collie Irrigation District. The salinity of the Wellington Dam has increased due to historical clearing and irrigators currently use water with salinity levels approximately twice that of the Murray River in South Australia (Water and Rivers Commission, 2001). The Collie River Salinity Situation Statement (2001), released by the Water and Rivers Commission (now the Department of Water), identified realistic actions that could achieve the salinity reduction target. Subsequent benefit-cost analyses and prefeasibility studies recommended the diversion of the most saline flows in the Collie River away from the dam as an immediate intervention (URS, 2003). The East Branch of the Collie River above the locality of Buckingham (20 km east of Collie) contributes around half of the salt that flows into the Wellington Dam and the diversion and storage of the saltiest flows from the East Branch at Buckingham was identified as a viable option for reducing salinity in Wellington Dam. The proposal had one problem û the water could not be disposed of as quickly as it was diverted. However, in the vicinity of the diversion site were a number of coal mine voids and after preliminary discussions, the Government/Griffin Coal alliance was formed and from this the opportunities have continued. Diverted water would be stored temporarily in an adjacent mine void (Chicken Creek 4 void) and then disposed of to the sea. The disposal options included Western Power CorporationÆs saline discharge pipeline from Collie Power Station, or a new pipeline. The diverted water was also identified as a potential raw source for treatment and use in industry. This has opened up opportunities including desalination, water efficiencies in the power stations, increased reliability of water supply for the power stations, water for new industries, wastewater disposal options and extra water for PerthÆs water supply. In the process of solving the water storage problems the project introduced a range of mine water quality problems û heavy metals and pH û and the Department of Water (DoW) is now working with the mining industry and the Centre for Sustainable Mine Lakes (CSML) to develop treatment and management technologies. The project has received support and funding through the National Action Plan for Salinity and Water Quality (NAP) and it has been possible to accelerate and enhance this project as a result of NAP. The DoW has developed the proposal to an advanced stage and gained approvals for the capital diversion program to go ahead. The partnerships have expanded to include the second mining company, Premier Coal, the Water Corporation, Western Power and the Harvey Irrigation Cooperative. The proposal could feasibly result in a $90 million integrated water management initiative for Collie using the latest technology, mining operations and providing water for value adding industries in the local area. The DoW is not a mining company; however, our experience in managing water in times of shortage, environmental water quality criteria, competition for water and managing community expectations will have the same success factors:consultation and knowing your community and stakeholders, sharing issues and working in partnership can provide results far greater than the initial issue, even brackish water has value, every sector is in competition with each other and has to have a share of the water, an integrated approach can provide opportunities for development in areas of water shortage, and never think of water as wastewater.

The demand for minerals will grow strongly to satisfy the needs of an increasing world population for materials and energy. The technical problems involved in producing these minerals will be daunting and the engineers who will have the responsibility for designing and controlling the mineral production processes must have a high level of skills. This will place a heavy responsibility on the education system. A small number of large, well equipped university departments dedicated to mineral processing and having a close working relationship with the mineral industry, and an international orientation, will be much better placed to meet the needs than a large number of small ill-equipped departments which find it difficult to remain viable in modem universities. Courses in mineral processing must be designed to meet the scientific and technological needs of industry and full use must be made of innovative educational techniques such as video conferencing in delivering the courses. The concept of a major international network of major mineral processing departments which is designed to make best use of scarce academic resources is important and should be considered by the International Committee of the IMPC.
