The competition between various options for the use of land is ever increasing. Commonly in Australia large tracts of land were un-encumbered by sweeping land use option limitations, but this situation has been rapidly altering in recent decades as governments are obliged to maximise the utility of the land for a broad range of competing interests. While the interests of miners have always been considered, the effects on limiting access to land for exploration and possible mining have not always been effectively incorporated into decision-making processes. As a result the challenge for national and state organisations representing these interests has been to develop a transparent process to allow for the mineral potential of an area to be systematically assessed and for information to be presented for use by specialists and non-specialists. Government agencies are called upon to implement government policy but also to provide accurate and meaningful advice which can assist in policy and land use decisions. Commonly timeframes are short and information can be less than complete. Nevertheless on-going decisions are made based upon the best available understanding. It is in this operational framework that the methods described in this paper are set. The paper describes a process for quickly and systematically providing advice on mineral potential for use by government agencies and ultimately the community within tight time and resource constraints. It is a method of combining the accumulated knowledge about mineral resources and their potential and presenting this information in an easily accessible form which can be used in a negotiation and policy development environment. Development of the method was undertaken to meet the needs of the Regional Forestry Agreement process in Australia. The method has been applied to study areas in New South Wales, Tasmania, Western Australia and elsewhere. Examples in this paper are taken from north eastern New South Wales.

Stawell Gold Mines Pty Ltd operates two underground decline mines within the township of Stawell. An active exploration program and commitment by owners to improving the ore reserves has led to an improved mine life and reduced operating costs since the purchase of the operation by Mining Project Investors and Pittston Mineral Ventures in late-1992. Over the past six years of operation a cumulative 1 150 000 ounces of gold have been added to the mineral inventory. An improved geological understanding of the orebody has evolved over time increasing the ore reserves and allowing the development of long-term plans for the mines future. This has enabled important capital decisions to be made providing the impetus for improved productivity and thereby reduced operating costs. Co-operative mine planning and mine geology utilising best practice geological systems have enabled the effective extraction of a structurally complex and mineralogically varied deposit within a rural Victorian township. Detailed metallurgical research has improved the function of an aged and poorly designed circuit to boost the mill capacity whilst also improving the metallurgical recovery. The combination of metallurgical expertise and an understanding of the geological setting enable an effective control of metallurgical recovery.

Several styles of copper (Cu) mineralisation are present at Sepon. Large tonnage, low grade skarn and carbonate replacement massive sulfide mineralisation occur within the metamorphic aureole of Permian-aged rhyodacite porphyry intrusions (RDPs). During exhumation and supergene weathering, this primary mineralisation has been upgraded to form high-grade chalcocite enriched zones up to 50 m thick, which comprises the bulk of Cu resources currently being mined at Sepon. Groundwaters remobilise Cu to form exotic accumulations of malachite that are locally hosted in irregular karsts in carbonate rocks, found up to 1000 m from source mineralisation. Khanong is the largest Cu deposit and recent discoveries have been made at Thengkham South, Thengkham North and Phabing. All deposits have formed by similar processes of mineralisation. However, all differ due to local variations in host rock lithology, structural setting, and hydrological conditions. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. This paper discusses how advanced manufacturing technology (AMT), which is fundamentally reliant on and developed via multi-disciplinary skills, has benefitted non-mining industries, and what lessons can be derived from this experience to benefit the mining industry, particularly underground coal mining. Examples of AMT use in æconventionalÆ industry, some drawn from the more than 25 years experience in many different industries of the Automation and Robotics team at the University of Wollongong, are described to show typical benefits, risks and opportunities expected in using AMT. Applying AMT to mining brings many unique challenges and this paper expands on these and then provides practical examples of how a multi-disciplinary team can develop new processes and systems leading to productivity, safety and other benefits for underground coal mining.

Waste rock piles containing reactive sulfide minerals can serve as long-term sources of acid mine drainage (AMD). Within these piles, many physical, geochemical and biological processes can contribute to the production of AMD. The flow of water, for example, depends on internal pile structure, which depends on the dumping methods used to construct the pile. In this paper, the internal structure and grain size distribution of typical waste rock piles are first reviewed with respect to their effect on internal water flow. A numerical model is then applied to simulate unsaturated flow within a waste pile assuming two primary waste materials, different atmospheric conditions and several geometric configurations. The simulations suggest that water movement can be controlled by introducing fine-grained material layers within the coarser host material. However, these layers should not be horizontal because they can lead to localised high-saturation regions as well as preferential flow favouring the production of AMD. A shallow slope towards the pile boundary may be introduced to force drainage to the outside while maintaining low saturation within the interior, thus reducing the production of AMD.

Good roads are essential in moving men and materials to and from the underground workplace. Coffey Partners International Pty Ltd (Coffey) has recently completed a underground coal industry funded project on underground mine road construction and maintenance. This paper discusses practical approaches to construction and maintenance of underground mine roads using transferrable civil technologies and innovative techniques. Mine pavements are generally low-cost (relative to civil roads), constructed to varying standards using locally available materials to best meet the mobility needs of the mine. Performance of pavements is thus largely dependent on the environmental conditions, quality of the available road making materials, maintenance policies and available resources. The paper will detail `what causes bad roads?' in various underground environments, available management strategies, construction and water control techniques, road maintenance and vehicle considerations.

ABS'TRACT For a number of years research efforts have been directed towards improving the efficiency of sampling and analysing coal mine roadway dusts. In the past decade the practicality of rapid, on site analysis of the incombustible content of these dusts using a radioactive technique has been receiving close attention both in Australia and overseas. Accurate measurement of the total incombustibles present is only possible by time consuming chemical methods. As the densities of the solid incombustible materials are greater than that of coal, they absorb a higher proportion of incident low energy gamma radiation than does coal. The amount of such radiation "back scattered" from mine dust samples is therefore inversely related to their average densities, and hence to their incombustible contents. This phenomenon can be used as a measure of incombustible content by employing an appropriately designed and calibrated instrument.

During conventional eddy current separation, a repulsive force is applied to metallic particles by placing them in a rapidly changing magnetic field generated by a spinning magnetic rotor carrying an arrangement of alternate magnetic poles. This method works effectively for larger non-ferrous metallic objects, such as aluminium cans, but as the metallic particles become smaller, the bulk repulsive force on the particles is increasingly replaced by a rotational torque. Therefore, for small metallic particles it makes sense to use particle rotation, rather than particle repulsion, to effect a separation. Eddy current separators using particle rotation are similar in construction to present separators, but are designed to produce a rotating field of essentially constant angular velocity and field strength. Practical and economic particle rotation eddy current separations are possible down to particle sizes of about 200 ¦m, but separations, at probably uneconomic rates, can be carried out on particles as small as 50 ¦m.

The increasing demand for underground cooling in South African gold mines has resulted in various cooling methods being con- sidered, including the use of ice. Two main areas in connection with ice cooling systems are being investigated. The first concerns the efficient and cost effective production of ice on a larger scale than previously required for any other application. The second con- cerns the transportation of ice in pipes from surface ice-making machines to underground melting sites.

Aberfoyle Ltd. has utilised a variety of flotation technologies in the Hellyer concentrator in North-Western Tasmania. Hellyer ore, with its slow flotation rates and low rate differentials between values and gangue, requires the use of long residence times and low air consumption rates in the flotation circuit. The operation of the flotation circuit, with a nominal residence time of 7 hours, has necessitated the development of a control system to provide continuity through operator shift changes. Cell selections at Hellyer varied from the 54 m3 hybrid Dorf Oliver / Maxwell (DO/MX) cells, to smaller 32 m3 Maxwell cells, conventional Don-Oliver 300 (8.5 m3) and 600 (17 m3) trough cells, and a column cell. The advantages of the large cells included low specific power consumptions and a low capital cost. However, problems with mixing and the maintenance of consistent froth depth have been identified in the hybrid DO/MX cells. Short circuiting in the trough cells was apparent, causing a considerable reduction in metallurgical performance. The column cell performs to expectation, although the application is not ideal.

The grinding characteristics of quartz which is normally associated with gold bearing ores in Kalgoorlie area was examined in a stainless steel laboratory size ball-mill in the presence of inorganic and organic surface active reagents. The cationic species considered were Fe3+, Cu2+ and Ca2+, and the anions were CO? and S2 as these are normally present during the process of grinding of gold ores in the region. The organic surfactants examined were K-amyl- xanthate, dodecylamine-hydrochloride and the Grinding Aid XFS-4272 manufactured by Dow Chemical The study was primarily based on an examination of the electrokinetic properties of quartz surface in the presence of the grinding reagents. Zeta potential at different reagent additions and pH values in the presence of individual reagents were examined and the corresponding grinding charcteristics determined. It is recognised by the current JORC (1999) code that resource classification involves the interaction of numerous qualitative and quantitative criteria such as data quality, geological continuity and grade continuity. No prescribed criteria and rules will work for all situations or even between different ore types within the same deposit. Also these criteria and rules are sometimes applied without a clear understanding of their appropriateness, accuracy or correct implementation. For these reasons case studies are useful to evaluate and compare criteria commonly used to assist in resource classification. In this paper blasthole data from a selected area of Joffre Member hosted ore of the Brockman Iron Formation at the Mt Whaleback orebody are used as the basis of a case study for the above-mentioned purposes. Iron grade, in per cent, is interpolated from a blasthole dataset into a block model using ordinary kriging. Samples are then removed from this blasthole dataset to produce a random sample grid, a semi-random sample grid and a regular sample grid. Using nearest neighbour, inverse distance squared, ordinary kriging and sequential gaussian simulation, block iron grades are estimated using these three blasthole data subsets as inputs. This provides four groups of estimates with the ordinary kriging estimate based on the complete blasthole dataset being considered to represent the true estimate of iron grades. Also generated during this process are estimates of the error for each block. These error estimates range from the simple, such as drill spacing, through to more advanced methodologies such as kriging efficiency and simulation. These estimates of grade and grade estimation error are then compared to the true estimate using graphs and statistics. In order of increasing accuracy the block grade estimation and simulation methods were nearest neighbour, inverse distance weighting, ordinary kriging and finally conditional simulation. The simulation in some instances doubled the accuracy of individual block grade estimates when compared to nearest neighbour and inverse distance weighting estimates. It was found that many methodologies for estimating the error of individual blocks performed equally well with only methods such as average drill hole spacing and classification by search ellipse pass number performing poorly. An approach on how to convert the abovementioned error estimates of individual blocks into a meaningful JORC classification is also discussed. Although advanced non-linear resource estimates are applicable, most iron ore mines are still using relatively straightforward methods. The use of blasthole data and some simple linear interpolation methods and simple linear based error estimates makes this study repeatable for most iron ore sites and their resource geologists. This style of investigation is recommended as a useful approach for the Competent Person to apply to their deposit and thus better select, implement and understand the criteria used for resource classification and provide more consistency and confidence in the resource classification process.

Geomechanics is one of the more specialised aspects of site supervision on a major tunnell- ing project. The controlled deformation of a rock mass as a result of tunnelling and the knowledge of loading of temporary and permanent underground supports are important for safe, economic construction. These basic parameters depend on the construction method and sequence and the geological conditions through which a tunnel is driven. Thus geomechanical monitoring during the construction phase provides feedback to a design team and allows any revisions to a design to cater for local conditions not revealed by earlier investigations. Detailed geological mapping is an integral part of geomechanics in the construction phase. It serves as a monitor on pre construction predictions and also forms part of the as- constructed record. If conventional excavation-techniques are adopted, geomechanics can provide a service of blast' vibration monitoring of surface structures in urban areas.

Applications of chlorine metallurgy to the extraction of metals often result in the production of volatile metallic chlorides, most of which condense directly to a solid phase at 1 atm pressure. A stirred-bed condenser suitable for the recovery of these materials is described.The unit, developed from the concept of a fluid bed condenser, has the advantages of versatility of operation and ability to control fog and dust formation. Test work using aluminium chloride vapour (as an example of a volatile chloride) gave recoveries approaching 100 per cent. The yield was dependent upon halide content of the vapour, flowrate, and, to a lesser extent, upon coolant temperature. Analysis of the heat transfer dataindicated condensation side coefficients in the range 10 to 30 B.T.U./hr sq. ft. 0p.

The mining industry has undergone a profound and transformative shift in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of emerging technologies such as automation, digitalisation, and electrification. These technological innovations have not only revolutionised operational efficiency and productivity but have also introduced an imperative need for new and innovative approaches to conducting mining activities. Specifically, the mines of the future face a new series of complex challenges when planning and developing greenfield or brownfield mining projects in the 21st century. These challenges include greater operational depths, higher seismicity levels, higher rock temperatures, increased environmental constraints and sustainability requirements, a higher degree of interoperability, lack of skilled workforce, and the need for sustainable and eco-friendly mining practices. Consequently, there is an essential need to formulate novel strategies and robust planning methodologies that re-evaluate how mines are planned, executed, and managed, from the early exploration stages to the post-mining era and the consequent uses of mine sites. This research focuses on identifying the factors influencing the implementation of modern technologies, such as autonomous machinery in mining operations, and their impact on mining method selection and longterm mine planning. The findings underscore a crucial need for a paradigm shift in how mines are planned and developed, going beyond mining method selection, which primarily focuses on geological and economic factors, and must evolve to incorporate the multifaceted implications of modern mining operations.

Underground mines in Australia and worldwide are extending to greater depths. The effect of depth brings a number of challenges to mining engineers including geotechnical, ventilation, haulage and selection of mining method. The main effects of depth from a ventilation perspective are increased heat and humidity leading to reductions in productivity, occupational safety and health issues and the potential for fatalities. Numerous approaches have been undertaken over the years to mitigate against these effects. In this paper a review of various approaches to improving climatic conditions at a number of mine sites worldwide is undertaken. From these case studies it is argued that for mines at depth with the potential for a climate problem perhaps an alternative design philosophy to the established design philosophy should be utilised. In conclusion, the paper proposes some simple rules of thumb for use in mines with climate problems or the potential for climate problems.

A technique for determining the recovery of attached particles across the froth phase in flotation that relies on measuring the rate at which bubble-particle aggregates enter the froth is used to investigate the selectivity of attached particles across the froth phase. Combining these measurements with those of other techniques for determining the froth recovery of attached particles provides an insight into the different subprocesses of particle rejection in the froth phase. The results of experiments conducted in a 3 m3 Outokumpu tank cell show that the detachment of particles from aggregates in the froth phase occurs largely at the pulp-froth interface. In particular it is shown that the pulp-froth interface selectively detaches particles from aggregates according to their physical attributes.

The Western Desert of Egypt is a part of the arid Great Sahara of Africa which extends from the Nile Valley in the east to the Atlantic Ocean in the west. It is covered by a sedimentary sequence of Mezozoic and Teriary rocks. Recently this part of the country (about 65% of its surface area) has attracted an increasing attention in the plan of finding new agricultural and industrial communities outside the crowded Nile Valley. The plan aims to reduce the high population density in the narrow Nile Valley and to cover a considerable part of the increasing food demands in the country of Egypt. Accordingly, the groundwater exploration work in the Western Desert has been remarkably increased in the last decade, however it is still limited compared with the vast area of the Desert. The present work is a part of the groundwater exploration in the 6th October City, a new community located at 40kms west of Cairo. The rock exposures belong to a sedimentary stratigraphic section starting from the Cretaceous in the east to the Pliocene in the west. The Cretaceous outcrops due east are attributed to an almost N-S uplift and forms a thick massive limestone plateau which separates the present area from the Nile Valley. The Teriary section in the west have alternations of different porous formations such as the sands and sandstones which may acquire a good potentiality of groundwater resources. The previous groundwater exploration work included combined geological and geophysical investigations followed by exploration drilling. Although the area lies directly to the west of the Nile Valley, the discovered groundwater is saline and located at deeper reserviores compared with the groundwater in the Nile Valley. This groundwater was described as marine fossile water by the oil companies working in the Western Desert. From the geological point of view, it is believed that the Cretacious massive limestone plateau, in the east, roots to a depth which far exceeds the groundwater levels in the Nile Valley and acts as an impervious barrier between the aquifers in the Nile Valley and the area under investigations.

Geological structure is one of the main controls on ground conditions within mining. It has a significant impact on the mining conditions and productivity of coal mines within the Sydney - Bowen Basin. The three main types of faults common to this region, normal, reverse and strike-slip systems, each present distinct challenges to mining. These systems effect a wide range of geotechnical and mining conditions within the mines. These include coal quality, strata stability, goat and caving behaviour, productivity and maintenance schedules of mining equipment, mine design and mine-site stress fields. A better understanding of the regional, local and mine-scale structural setting, timing relationships of structural events and the mechanisms of fault formation will greatly aid industry's push for greater productivity and competitiveness.

A summary of the more important work by previous workers is followed by brief descriptions of the rock formations and regional structure.
