In their description of the post-mine leaching of galena and marmatite at Broken Hill, Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard1 find themselves unable to account satisfactorily for the fact that the more usual order of solubility of these two minerals is here reversed, and that the galena is leached more rapidly than the marmatite. An explanation of this somewhat unusual phenomena is perhaps provided by the recent work of Garrels.2 Garrels showed that the presence of Cl' ions in Pb-Zn solutions, in concentrations in excess of 0·1 N, rendered the zinc less soluble than the lead. It seems possible that Cl' ions may be present in the underground waters of the North Broken Hill Mine in sufficient concentration to cause such reversal in the relative solubility of the lead and zinc sulphides.Thus the analysis of "water believed to be free from contamination by mine drainage" given by Messrs. Garretty and Blanchard (p. 158 of their paper) is as follows:Total solids in solution 878 grains per gallon...164 grams of Cl per gallon is equivalent to 2· 3394 grams of Cl' per litre, which is equivalent to 0066 N.This concentration is approaching a value sufficient to cause a reversal of the relative solubility of zinc and lead salts; and it seems probable that there will be parts of the ore-body where locally the Cl' concentration will greatly exceed this figure. At such points the lead salts would be more soluble than the zinc salts, so that the galena would be leached more rapidly than the marmatite. With the dilution of such Cl'-rich waters with water containing less Cl', the Cl' concentration would fall below 0·1 N, and the lead would be reprecipitated, while the zinc would stay in solution, as, for example, in the water analysis quoted. The last two years have seen a rapid change-over from mechanised cut and fill. stoping to the more economic and productive long hole open stoping method, such that today more than 80 per cent of total production is won from open stopes. At first drilling was by sub-level rings and/or parallel up and down holes from inter- mediate sill horizons using conventional exten- sion rod equipment. Sub-levels were developed no more than 40 metres apart to allow accurate drilling. Compact, crawler mounted in-the-hole hammer equipment was introduced as soon as it became available in Australia. Today, all open stope drilling is done with three Atlas Copco ROC306 rigs and two Ingersoll-Rand CMM jumbos. Fans of 115 mm diameter holes, varying from near vertical down holes to horizontal, are drilled with a burden of 3 m. Toe spacing varies from 3.5 m to 4 m. An Atlas Copco DG418 booster compressor is used to boost run-of-mine air from 700 kPa to 1400 kPa in the areas of longest drilling. This has improved overall drilling performance in these areas by 40 percent.

The Metropolitan Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) Initial System Project (ISP) - Underground Structures North, UGN, is the northern section of the blue line, which is the first stage of an underground mass transport rail system of 77 km to be implemented in the central area of Bangkok, Thailand. The UGN section (Huai Kwang - Bang Sue) consists of approximately 8 km of twin single track bored tunnels, nine underground stations and some short cut and cover tunnel sections. The paper focuses on the main issues involved in the structural design of the precast concrete lining, which is the definitive structural support of the bored tunnels. It includes an overview of the site and geotechnical conditions, specific properties of precast concrete linings, ground-structure modelling, approach for the assessment of load conditions and respective sectional forces and particulars of the detailing of the reinforcement and the segment testing program.

The primary objective of this research was to address the demands imposed on self- contained self-rescuer (SCSR) performance dur- ing simulated escapes. The results clearly indicate that SCSR performance, apart from the inherent technological features, is a function primarily of the physical and anthro- pometric features of the wearer, and of the particular nature of the escape route. These factors consequently play a major role in the planning of any escape strategy, which may vary from mine to mine. It is therefore concluded that each mine would have to formulate its own escape strategy which in turn would depend on the choice of SCSR, and the particular escape Route.

The kinetics of the hydrogen reduction of iron oxides in granular calcined bauxite were studied at 550-1,050°C in a shallow bed reactor. The iron oxides behaved as a dispersion of particulate iron oxide in a porous alumina matrix in which the iron oxide particles were reduced independently. The observed rates of reaction were found to be virtually independent of the bauxite grain size. At 800,°C and above, the reduction was multistage, Le.1. Fe203 +2Al203 (matrix) ?2FeAl204, and2. FeAl204? Fe0 +Al203.Reaction 1 was very rapid. Reaction 2 was much slower, the latter stages being controlled, at least in part, by phYSIcal changes of the Fe0 and a-Al203 produced in the reaction. Owing to the observed nature of the material, the reaction rate controlling steps could not be determined.

Taxation is a major factor in evaluating mining project developments. The availability or otherwise of effective tax relief for project expenditures can have a crucial bearing on the decision to proceed with a project. The special position of the mining industry is recognised within the Income Tax Assessment Act (the "Tax Act") by special legislation, namely Divisions 10, 1OAAA and 10AA. The legislation both extends the scope of items which are eligible for deduction and affects the timing of deductions. Generally, the legislation separates expenditure into 3 categories: 1. Expenditure on exploration 2. Capital expenditure on the development and the running of the mine; and 3. Facilities used in the transport of minerals. Companies evaluating a project should carefully analyse their proposed expenditures, allocating them between these categories so as to identify potentially non-deductible expenditures and to determine the period over which tax relief will be Obtained.

Mineral exploration and development can have a significant impact on the environment and local communities, in some circumstances extending well beyond the mine site. Poor environmental performance and consequent social impacts by some companies have affected the reputation of the whole industry to the extent that the principal public concern about mining is its impact on the environment. This is consistent with public attitudes about other major natural resource sectors such as forestry and commercial fishing. Traditionally the community has relied on governments to set the benchmark for acceptable environmental and social performance through establishing and revising regulations governing the mining industry. This however assumes that regulations keep pace with community expectations. It also does not take into account those circumstances where governments can have conflicting roles as both watchdog and project partner. Government regulations and industry self-regulation are not in of themselves sufficient for the minerals sector to demonstrate that it has adequately addressed environmental and social issues associated with the sector. For the minerals sector to improve its reputation it must first improve its environmental and social performance. To do this requires the sector to operate to acceptable standards of environmental and social performance and for the sector to be able to credibly communicate this to its stakeholders such as investors, non-government organisations (NGOs), customers, staff, regulators and local communities. Independent third party certification of environmental and social performance (æcertificationÆ), already operational in forest and fisheries management, is proposed as a mechanism to enable the minerals sector to achieve this. World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and industry partners will be collaborating in a project to ascertain the applicability of æcertificationÆ to the minerals sector. A number of economic, social and environmental benefits are identified that could accrue should mining companies be able to differentiate themselves on the basis of environmental and social performance, an attribute evident in æcertificationÆ schemes. External audiences are seeking increasing levels of information and data on environmental and social performance of mining companies, be it local communities, investors, financial institutions or NGOs. Environmental and social reporting should be a key communications device that stakeholders can rely on as a reliable, credible source of information on environmental and social performance. WWFÆs contribution to the debate about environmental and social reporting has been to develop a process to assess the quality of environmental and social reports against reporting ingredients which WWF believe are important if a report is to be an accurate reflection of the reporting entitiesÆ environmental and social performance.

In the course of an exploration program aimed at increasing Pasminco Mining's ore reserves, an electromagnetic survey down one of the underground drillholes at the North Mine, Broken Hill, recorded a broad and persistent response. This paper demonstrates that the anomaly was not due to any geological feature, but rather was caused by 'self-response' of the sensing probe. The observed results are due to the surveyed hole lying within a resistive environment and having distinct, but not unusual, changes in dip.This phenomenon has not been widely reported and we believe that there are likely to be similar cases in company records where very genuine looking responses are due to self-response rather than sulphides. These false anomalies can be recognised by correlating the observed data with the calculated down-hole component of the transmitting loop's primary field.

More and more coal in Australia is extracted by underground mining methods especially by longwall mining. These methods can be particularly sensitive to relatively small-scale structural discontinuities and variations in roof and floor rock character. Traditionally, information on these features has been obtained through drilling. However, this is an expensive process and its relevance is limited to the immediate neighbourhood of the boreholes. The geological uncertainty remains. Seismic surveying, especially by 3D seismic, is an alternative tool for geological structure delineation with growing credibility. In fact, it is one of the most effective geophysical methods available for identification of geological structures such as faults, folds, washouts, seam splits and thickness changes which are normally associated with potential mining hazards. Seismic data even can be used for stratigraphic identification. The information extracted from seismic data then can be integrated into mine planning and design. In this paper, we demonstrate computer aided interpretation techniques for maximising the information from seismic data and illustrate the ability of seismic reflection methods to resolve localised geological features. Both synthetic and real seismic data obtained in recent 2D and 3D seismic surveys from Australian coal mines will be used. Compared with results obtained with drilling programs, the structural definitions from seismic are of unprecedented quality.

Mining of the Agnew nickel deposit commenced in 1970 using a variety of underground mining methods, though with mixed success due to the difficult ground conditions. WMC Resources Ltd acquired the operation in 1989, and commenced nickel production with an open pit. In 1995 all production reverted to the rejuvenated underground mine, using exclusively SLC (sublevel caving) methods. Currently the mine produces 1.4 Mt per annum, at an average grade of 1.74 per cent Ni. Underground mining of the Perseverance orebody has always presented significant challenges due to the difficult ground conditions in the weak and altered ultramafic rocks. The range of problems include areas of swelling minerals, intense and extremely weak shear zones, relatively high in situ stress, and in other areas very brittle rocks. Under these conditions rock mechanics input has been and remains a critical element of the mining strategy. Severe ground behaviour difficulties down to a depth of 500 m below surface prompted a review of the mining strategy for the large disseminated nickel orebody, including evaluation of alternative mining methods. However, sublevel caving was ultimately selected as the preferred method, and a re-design of the SLC cross-cut layout followed. A selection of rock mechanics investigations of interest are described, including complex virgin stress measurements, detailed ground behaviour monitoring, and the use of non-linear stress analyses to re-design the mine layout. Subsequent ground behaviour, support design and production scheduling are also described.

Very large reserves of gas are contained in coal. Because of the low permeability of the coal gas flow rates are very low. Fracturing of the coal can be achieved by use of the nitrogen - foam frac techniques described but the flow rates after fracturing are not sufficient to support economic development. Fracturing of the seams in the Bowen Basin was as predicted but in the Sydney Basin no trace of the fracture could be found when development proceeded past the fractured well. Testing of coal samples has provided some insight into parameters affecting desorption Rates.

The 15-year long debate between the industry, Government and Aboriginal people about the rights and wrongs of Land Rights, the right of Aboriginal people to control development on their land and the relationship between the parties, has been long and often bitter. It has so far been a war of words and often the truth has been the first casualty. This paper looks at the debate and presents the perspective of Aboriginal people, as well as looking at how the industry and Aboriginal people can work together for everyone's benefit. It addresses such matters as: ò why Aboriginal people believe they have the right to control development on their land; ò the perception that Aboriginal people are anti-development; ò the perception that Aboriginal land is 'locked-up'; and ò how companies can negotiate with Aboriginal people.

The satisfactory ventilation of an extensive coal mine is a subject which requires continual attention from all concerned.It must be remembered that a colliery contains many miles of workings, extending in all directions and throughout which noxious gases may be given off either naturally or by oxidation of the coal; fumes from explosives will be produced, dust will be gathered and carried in suspension, and water will be evaporated, producing a high humidity. Hence a considerable quantity of air in movement must be available to provide sufficient oxygen for men and horses, as well as to dilute and sweep away impurities, and maintain a tolerable degree of coolness.To maintain these conditions a modern colliery is divided up from the main ventilation shafts or adits (as the case may be) into a system of main airways, and in the working districts is further subdivided into district splits. To initiate the air movement, large centrifugal fans with a displacement capacity of up to 400,000 cu. ft. of air per minute are installed, generally in drifts off the upcast shaft, or adit, and at the return end of the ventilating circuit. These fans are thus exhausting fans and by producing a region of low density bring the heavier air at the other extremity of the circuit into movement to correct the difference in density, so far as it is not prevented by the frictional resistance of the airways. A flow of air is thus established, and it is obvious that to enable this volume of air to be as great as possible, the frictional resistance of the mine airways should be maintained at the lowest practicable figure. To this end, main airways should be as large as possible, have sides as smooth as practicable, and be straight, any necessary bends being of large radius.REQUIREMENTS OF THE VENTILATION SYSTEMThe New South Wales Coal Mines Regulation Act contains stringent provisions on requirements of the ventilation system. During the 1998/99 Asian crisis Solid Energy's export revenues collapsed from over US$70M to under US$40M. Simultaneously, domestic market uncertainty led to decreases in volumes and prices. A major new underground mine was not technically viable, and was closed, and several other mines were marginal. Less than two years later, Solid Energy and its JV partner closed a second new underground mine. The company was in financial crisis, and reported an $86M loss for 1998/99. After refinancing with stringent workout conditions it still had minimal returns due to low prices, unaffordable transportation costs and huge unrealised FX losses as the NZ dollar fell 40 per cent in value. The obvious scenario was to æcash upÆ û complete extraction at remaining mines, sell off any viable parts of the business, pay off debt and wind the company down.In 2002 Solid Energy has completed its recovery. Although margins remain slim and volatile in both export and domestic markets, it is achieving record volumes and revenues. It has paid off its shareholder loan, has minimal remaining FX losses, and cashflow is allowing further mine and infrastructure development. The key to the turnaround has been implementation of rigorous planning, analysis and decision-making in all aspects of the business. The company has a comprehensive, rolling 20-year plan used annually to update rolling five year and annual business plans. Solid Energy augments strong line management operations with rigorous standards and processes for mine planning and development, operational decision-making, and functional support. Detailed, quantitative risk analysis is used in all aspects of the business and allows comprehensive integration of opportunity and risk management across all activities in the company.Coal mining is widely perceived as an æold-economyÆ industry. But, like other successful æold economyÆ companies, the information systems and management processes used by Solid Energy are as leading edge as any in the high-tech sector. They are the key to managing to add and sustain maximum value for a company that has access to coal resources sufficient for hundreds of years.

Power supply for remote mining developments is compared with supply to the general public with the conclusion that the private power plant operator has many opportunities to minimise his costs which are not open to public utilities. The main features of diesel, gas turbine and steam power plant and the limitation upon their application which may be imposed by the fuels available and the local conditions at remote sites are outlined. Reference is made to the value of joint examination by the mining engineer, metallurgist and power engineer to decide how to make best overall use of capital, labour and energy in co-ordinating the design of power and process plant and in setting no more than adequate standards of reliability and efficiency. Fluctuations in world markets make it difficult to plan mining operations to a firm time base. Suggestions are made to minimise the financial risk in forward expenditure upon power plant which in large sizes due to longer construction time may have to be ordered before a final decision is taken upon the mining development it is to serve.

Traditional methods of resource modelling and mine planning rely upon geostatistical methods applied to exploration drill core data to derive a three dimensional model of the distribution of metal grades, quantised into rectangular prisms or blocks. The resulting block model is a primary input into short, medium and long term mine planning. However, block attributes are averaged or interpolated over a complete block, meaning that information at smaller scales is lost to the mine planning process. Grade engineering for new mining methods, such as the development of more accurately controlled blast designs, continuous miners for hard rock and sensors for rock properties that can be distributed along the operations process and value chain, allows excavation to be much more selective than traditional blasting, and provides data for driving earlier separation of waste from ore. This selectivity can be optimised if the resolution of resource models can match or exceed the spatial resolution of selective mining technologies. Opportunities for selective mining increase as a deposit becomes more heterogeneous. This leads to an interest in methods for estimating the distribution and characteristics of mineral heterogeneity within the ore-body.
