Arsenic, often associated with precious metals ore deposits, is a major contaminant released during large-scale gold mining. Because of the complex oxidation/reduction and sorption behaviour of As, prediction of the long-term mobility of As in pit lakes is uncertain. The behaviour of As in pit lakes is investigated in this paper by conducting a series of laboratory experiments where As is allowed to adsorb onto pit lakes sediments. Experiments were conducted over a range of pH with both As(III) and As(V) allowed to adsorb onto sediments collected from existing pit lakes found in the three main orebody types in Nevada, USA; porphyry copper, quartz-adularia gold, and Carlin Trend type gold deposits. Results from adsorption experiments show that As(V) and As(III) adsorption is strongly pH dependent with higher uptake at pH 5 and lower uptake at pH 9 for As(V) and higher uptake at pH 9 and lower uptake at pH 5 for As(III). This behaviour, as expected for oxyanions, has been described previously for agricultural soils, iron oxides, and Carlin Trend heap materials. Maximum adsorption of As(V) for the Carlin Trend type gold sediment was 3.0 g/kg at pH 5, 2.0 g/kg for the quartz-adularia sediment, and 0.9 g/kg for the copper porphyry sediment. Maximum adsorption of As(III) for Carlin Trend type gold sediment was 2.5 g/kg at pH 9, 2.2 g/kg for the quartz-adularia sediment, and 2.1 for the copper porphyry sediment. Adsorption isotherms are non-linear and show Freundlich isotherm behaviour. Variations in sorption between the different pit lake sediments under similar conditions can be explained by differences in the elemental composition of the sediment. Most rock forming elements from XRF analysis are similar in quantity except for Fe. The Fe content is highest in the Carlin Trend type gold deposit sediments and lowest in porphyry copper deposit sediments and is the third most abundant element in all three sediments. The Fe content of the sediments correlates well with the amount of As sorption seen in the laboratory experiments.

During the life of a mining project in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the greatest impact is on the people of the project area and the most intense, day-to-day contact is between these people and the project's field staff. Yet formal structures at present emphasise contact between much higher levels of national government and company personnel. Whilst understandable, this is unfortunate particularly since, given the nature of PNG politics, villagers do have a powerful influence on project success, as recent dramatic events on Bougainville have indicated. A greater role for local views and greater attention to such views by other parties is clearly required. But to achieve a successful marriage between informal village politics and the formal structures of investment procedures will require considerable patience and adjustment. This should be reflected in the cost of project development and be regarded as being as of a significance equal to that currently accorded to the technical aspects of project development.

Queensland Mines Limited operates a small uranium treatment plant at Nabarlek in the Arnhem Land Aboriginal Reserve, some 265 km due east of Darwin. It was the wish of the local Aboriginal people that the ore be treated over an eight year period and that no township be constructed in Arnhem Land. Due to these wish- es it was decided to house employees and their families in Darwin and fly the employees to the minesite for work rosters. A singleman's style camp only was constructed at Nabarlek. To satisfy the Aboriginal people's wishes all recreation time is spent offsite thus lead- ing to a roster system whereby employees spend three distinct periods of 6, 6 and 4 days on- site, broken by recreation periods of 3, 4 and 5 days in Darwin, during each 28 day period. Employees are divided into four opposing rosters, which allows at any given time for approximately half the workforce to be onsite and the other half on rest and recreation leave in Darwin. This method of staffing has generally proved to be most satisfactory although at times problems arise, in terms of both product- ion and social effect not normally encountered when operating within more conventional circum- Stances.

Primay (syngenetic and protogenetic) inclusions - i.e. minerals formed during or before diamond growth and encapsulated in the diamond - provide important information on the origin of diamond. Recent Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd dating of such inclusions has yielded crystallization ages older than their volcanic host, implying that diamonds are mantle xenocrysts. In this paper we report results of studies on the nature of syngenetic inclusions and the carbon isotopic compositons of the host diamond from the West Australian diamond deposits at Argyle and Elllendale. The Argyle diamonds are dominantly, of eclogitic paragensis and are characterized by strongly C depleted compositions. Jaspilites and underlying basalt contacts of the Archaean volcano- sedimentary Grpo Parß Group, Carajßs, host giant iron mineralisation in the ~100-km long, E-W trending Carajßs fold. Preliminary, unpublished geochronological data point to a Palaeoproterozoic mineralisation event. Geochemically, jaspilites are typical volcanogenic banded iron formations. Basalts exhibit evidence of spilitic seawater interaction. Iron-associated hydrothermal alteration of mafic rocks was induced by fluid infiltration in amygdales, with development of chlorite- and hematite-dominated zones. In the case of jaspilites, iron mineralisation encompasses: partial replacement of jaspilitic microcrystalline hematite by blasts of martitic magnetite; jasper recrystallisation, producing fine-grained, hematite-free granoblastic quartz; martite recrystallisation, forming lobate¦subhedral hematite; pervasive porosity development by quartz-chert leaching; incipient cavity filling by microlamellar hematite; and advanced filling by coarser, euhedral and comb-textured, tabular- shaped hematite.Peak hydrothermal ore textures indicate typical epithermal-crust conditions, supported by preliminary fluid-inclusion calculations at 160 - 200¦C. Such temperatures and extreme fluid-to-rock ratios during alteration must have exceeded the ambient metamorphic conditions, with the infiltrating fluid relatively hot and capable of leaching SiO2. Therefore, mineralisation developed over exhumed, Archaean, brittly deformed rocks, with mineral associations representative of very low- to low-grade metamorphism. Considering that chlorite (¦talc) abounds in mafic rocks; hydrothermal albite is developed; dolomite fills veins and vugs; the typical rare-earth-element (REE) pattern of jaspilites is significantly modified in higher-grade hard hematite ores (higher LREE); pyrite, copper sulfide minerals and rare gold occur in association with carbonate-quartz-rich alteration zones, it is suggested that an alkaline, H2O-Fe-CO2 mineralising fluid dominated, also containing species like S¦Cu¦Au. Peak-mineralising conditions are likely to have resulted from a single, evolving fluid, via incipient- through advanced-stage alteration phases. The porous, high-grade soft hematite-type ore (SH), rich in microlamellar and anhedral hematite, must have derived from interaction with this relatively hot SiO2-leaching fluid, whereas the high-grade massive hard hematite-type ore (MH) developed due to closer fluid-rock temperature equilibrium conditions, attained by mineral reactions, with relative increase in the Fe/Σcations ratios allowing the precipitation of subhedral-tabular hematite that partially cements the soft-hematite ore. SH and MH hematite ore types must thus reflect intermediate and high fluid:rock ratios, respectively. Since the N5 deposit is to date understood to contain the largest amount of the MH ore, its units are interpreted as the loci of the highest fluid:rock ratios in the district. Preliminary mineralogical information regarding the S11 deposit of the Serra Sul (south range) implies higher-temperature conditions. The near-equant grain size and the granoblastic intergrain relationship, coupled with the presence of riebeckite, augitic pyroxene and garnet, suggest hornfels textures. The data collected, though still relatively sparse, permit the speculation that the immense driving force for the Carajßs world-class iron deposits was a relatively shallow, igneous-related hydrothermal system. If such a model is correct, then the Carajßs Palaeoproterozoic iron deposits could represent an end-member of the iron oxide-copper-gold hydrothermal system in the province.

Rock mechanics investigations have shown that some major slopes in the Panguna pit would be stable at angles in excess of 500 providing near-surface instability could be controlled. Excavation of final batters at angles between 55¦ and 60¦ is now being carried out using D10 dozers with berms at 45 to 60 m centres. A trial slope with berms at 90 m centres is planned. Shotcreting of weak zones combined with crest reinforcement, with rock anchors and dowels, is used to provide protection against erosion and toppling of the crests. Overall slopes excavated in this way are of the order of 10¦ steeper than slopes obtained by blast and shovel excavation.

High resolution seismic profiling has proved a cost effective tool for defining the structure and seam geometry of Late Cretaceous-Late Miocene age lignite deposits in the South Island of New Zealand since 1981.In 1985 a total of 45 km of Mini Sosie seismic reflection was carried out in the Benhar, Hawkdun and Ashers-Waituna deposits as part of a major multidisciplinary resource investigation funded by the Liquid Fuels Trust Board. For each deposit the seismic programme involved integrating four or more intersecting Mini Sosie traverses with a grid of 1000 m spaced geophysically logged drillholes. The objective was to detect faults, with displacements ranging 30 - 100 m, which might impede mining using bucket wheel excavator systems at depths down to 300 m below surface.In general the quality of processed seismic data was high and with the assistance of ynthetic seismograms and other geological information, it was possible to identify a number of significant previously unknown faults. The success of this seismic programme ha shown that high resolution seismic profiling, used in conjunction with relatively low density drilling, can produce valuable structural and tratigraphic information at an early stage of open pit mining investigation.

This paper compares the designs of heap leach facilities for four precious metal mining projects in the southwestern United States. These four proposed projects are of small-to medium-size relative to other operating mines in the United States, and are either permitted or in the final stages of permitting. The differences and similarities in the heap leach facility designs are compared with respect to site conditions, operating conditions and regulatory requirements. This comparison provides a summary of the state-of-practice for heap leach facility design in the southwestern United States and identifies current issues in project development and process material containment.

The properties along Ida Avenue in Mosman stand 10 m above the road on an outcrop of Sydney sandstone. Access to the houses is generally via a long steep staircase. The owner of 22 Ida Avenue identified an opportunity to use the natural strength of the rock beneath his property to excavate an underground garage and to provide access to the basement of his property via a 10 m elevator shaft from the back of the garage. This paper will describe the design and construction of this unique and innovative urban development.

The settlement and drainage behaviour of co-mix, or mixtures of waste rock and tailings, are examined in a column study. Three co-mix profiles were observed for settlement, drainage, and pore water pressure response. A fourth profile with waste rock and no tailings was also observed for settlement. Co-mix consolidated faster than predictions for tailings alone, and maintained a saturated void space relative to waste rock alone. Practical benefits of co-mix as a waste disposal technology may include faster time to consolidation than tailings, a reduction in total settlement of placed material compared to tailings alone, and a reduction in acid drainage by limiting the flow of water and oxygen through maintenance of a saturated void space.

Numerous Fe-Cu-Au-rare earth element (REE) deposits have been identified within the Palaeoproterozoic Dongchuan Group of the Kangdian region of SW China. Geochronologic and geochemical data of the dolerite dykes and other volcanic rocks reveal extensional activity occurred about 1.7 Ga called ‘Kunyang Rifting’. The Kangdian region underwent variable degrees of extension, meaning that breakup in the central part of this region occurred earlier than in the north. Research on microphysiography, isotopic geochemistry and inclusions of the Yinachang typical Fe-Cu-Au-REE deposits suggest that the dominant mineralisation fluid is high-temperature, high-salinity magma fluid, containing alkalic components, volatile phase and Cu-Au. Metasomatism and mixing between this magmatic fluid and carbonaceous wall rock and meteoric water caused the precipitation of Fe, REEs and Cu-Au. A chalcopyrite Re-Os age from the Yinachang deposit obtained during this study is some 50–100 million years younger than the timing of emplacement of the deeply sourced Haizi and Dongchuan dolerites. The Yinachang deposit is a typical iron oxide-copper-gold (IOCG)-type deposit, and the presence of this and other deposits in the Kangdian region indicates that the region hosts an intraplate extension-related IOCG system within the western edge of the Yangtze Block, China.CITATION:Hou, L, Ding, J, Zhang, J R, Zhu, S B, Wu, S Y and Peng, H J, 2015. The main factors controlling the electro- winning of zinc from impure aqueous sulphate electrolytes are reviewed. Zinc, hydrogen and impurities are deposited at the cathode. The current effic- iency for zinc is increased by increasing zinc/ acid ratio and current density and by decreas- ing temperature; and may be unchanged, increased or decreased by the presence of impurity ions. A qualitative comparison of observed and predicted impurity effects is in reasonable agreement. Quantitative treatment of the effects of impurities and cell additives is not available. A tentative explanation of the time dependence of current efficiency in the presence of some impurities is provided. The forms in which impurities are deposited is substantially unknown. Impurities may be classified according to the extent of cathodic deposition. Procedures for control of cathodic deposition of impurities are outlined. The main anodic reactions are the forma- tion of oxygen, manganese dioxide and sulphuric acid. Minor reactions include the oxidation of lead, silver, cobalt and chloride. The Lady Loretta lead-zinc-silver mineral isation of north-west Queensland was discovered first by Placer geologists in 1968 as a result of a geochemical soil survey. The stratigraphic position, mineralisation and rock associations of the deposit are very similar to those of the Mount Isa lead-zinc-silver orebodies. Aspects of the exploration history, geo- chemistry and structural geology of the Lady Loretta deposit, are discussed. A geometric model of the Ore Horizon is given.

Four field test plots were constructed in 1998 on a sloped waste rock surface at the Myra Falls Operations of Boliden Westmin (Canada) Limited to evaluate hydraulic performance of alternate cover system designs. The field test plot cover systems were designed to control oxygen ingress and water infiltration to the underlying waste rock while providing a medium for a grass and legume vegetation cover. The test plots consisted of a bare waste rock surface (control plot), and three additional plots consisting of native compacted till placed directly on the waste rock surface, overlain by non-compacted till. Two of the test plots included a compacted till layer ameliorated with flyash and bentonite, respectively, to improve moisture retention and reduce permeability. The third test plot consisted of a compacted layer of native till overlain by non-compacted till. A performance monitoring system was installed in each test plot to evaluate net percolation and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock. In addition, each test plot has profiles of matric suction, water content, and temperature sensors installed at up-slope and down slope locations. A review of four years of monitoring data shows that the compacted till/bentonite cover system has been most successful in limiting the infiltration of meteoric waters and oxygen ingress to the underlying waste rock material. The compacted till/flyash and compacted till cover systems have produced similar net percolation results and neither have functioned well in maintaining an oxygen ingress layer throughout the year. The amelioration of bentonite with till to produce a compacted barrier layer shows promise in reducing water and oxygen ingress at the MFO site, while the incorporation of flyash with the till did not result in a significant increase in performance. The field performance data clearly demonstrates the need for developing field trials prior to full-scale construction, as opposed to relying solely on an un-calibrated numerical modelling to design the full-scale cover system.

The project manager no longer has to wait days for his reports, and he doesn't have to thumb through a foot of four part stationery to find that one line of information. The new techniques bring characteristics that are music to the ear of the project team giving them a better chance of bringing the projects in on time and within budget.

Unnamed early prospectors panned gold from creeks drain- ing the Great Dividing Range in the early part of 1851. The first publicised discovery was credited to Edward Hargraves near Bathurst in New South Wales later in 1851 and during the ensu- ing gold rush, prospectors rapidly made discoveries elsewhere in New South Wales and later across the border in Victoria. Reference to the attached graphs of gold production indicates that for much of the first 100 years, gold production came from the easily worked and readily discovered shallow alluvial deposits, many of which were located in the creeks draining mountainous regions of Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland (Fig. 1 and 2). As these deposits were exhausted, prospectors turned their attention to outcrop lode deposits which led to the development of underground mining techniques and a significant boost in over- all gold production. With the discovery of the rich Golden Mile lodes in Kalgoorlie in 1893, gold production increased signifi- cantly and peaked around the turn of the century. At that time, the enormous potential of the great Witwatersrand deposits in South Africa had only just been appreciated and for a few years, Australia led the world in gold production (1855-1863 and again in 1903). Underground mining continued in the Eastern Goldfields area of Western Australia, the Bendigo-Ballarat region of Victoria and in northeast Queensland. Very few of these operations continued beyond the Second World War, except the larger producers in the Kalgoorlie region where recovered grade had dropped to about 6 g/t Au. By the early 1970s with the gold price fixed at US$35 per ounce, most of the operations were shut down as labour costs escalated, with only the low cost bulk mining operation at Mt. Charlotte and the high grade reefs at Norseman continuing in Production.

The Blue Cube Mineral Quantifier Inline (MQi) instrument uses reflective light spectroscopy and advanced chemometrics to measure mineral or elemental grade in a slurry line. The instrument takes scans continuously and sends data to the DCS or PLC control system.Controlling the concentrate grades on a flotation circuit using low-frequency measurements can be difficult or impossible, especially on a circuit that has fast process dynamics. The ability to rapidly measure changes in grade makes it possible to continuously manipulate the flotation circuit operating parameters such as level, airflow and reagent addition set points to optimise plant performance throughout changing conditions.At Barrick’s Porgera mine in Papua New Guinea the flotation circuit feeds sulfide concentrate slurry to a pressure oxidation circuit. In order to maximise gold recovery in the flotation plant and increase performance in the pressure oxidation process, there is a stringent requirement to maintain a stable and optimum sulfur grade. The gold recovery is directly affected by the sulfur grade as most of the gold at Porgera is submicroscopic and associated with the sulfides (disseminated?pyrite).Porgera considered various points in the flotation circuit for installing Blue Cube analysers. This was part of a plant upgrade to improve process control. Due to budget constraints it was decided to initially only install one Blue Cube analyser on the final concentrate stream of the flotation circuit measuring sulfur, sulfides, gold and particle size. The accuracy of the calibration results were very good for all these properties. The sulfur measurement was used in an advanced control system to optimise and stabilise the grade. The paper presents comparisons between mineral grades determined using analytical laboratory analyses and the online Blue Cube data measurements, as well as benefits achieved by measuring grade online. Decarbonisation of the steel industry has recently attracted a lot of research and technological development. Most of the technological developments are centred around the replacement of blast furnace (BF), which has been the main primary smelting furnace in the ironmaking step of steel production. Replacement of the BF is not an easy task because of BF’s many established capabilities over the years, especially its ability to use low-grade iron feed. In this regard, Metso has developed its own technology, Metso’s Outotec direct reduced iron (DRI) smelting furnace, to tackle this problem. The recently developed six-in line electric furnace for DRI smelting can be used for primary smelting of DRI from blast furnace grade iron ore. Unlike the electric arc furnace (EAF), the DRI smelting furnace can handle larger slag volumes that emanate from the high gangue in BF grade DRI. Therefore, fluxing plays an important role in operating the DRI smelting furnace. This paper presents fluxing options and proposes slag quality and operating windows for the DRI smelting furnace. Also, the effect of slag on refractory durability will be discussed.

The depletion of high-grade hard and lumpy chrome ores has forced Zimbabwean ferrochrome producers to resort to low-grade friable ores that have an average of 28 per cent fines against a set limit of 12 per cent. Submerged open arc furnaces currently in use are associated with eruptions within the furnace because of the high amounts of fines, high energy consumption, as well as high SO2 and CO2 emissions. Traditionally employed agglomeration methods such as pelletising and the use of coke in the furnace have been discarded because of the pressure to lower operational costs and to achieve higher profit margins. This research aims to develop a method to incorporate lowgrade friable ore fines and unprocessed coal into production while lowering CO2 and SO2 emissions through a closed direct current (DC) arc furnace. The closed DC arc furnace could incorporate the friable ores and coal while maintaining above 90 per cent reduction rates. Preliminary findings also show that energy consumption could be reduced by up to 35 per cent by incorporating a pre-heating and pre-reduction system using the flue gases from the furnace. In the proposed circuit, the cost of production per ton of ferrochrome might be potentially lowered by an average of 30 per cent.

The latent conditions clause in various general conditions of contract have traditionally proved to be a source of significant disputes in tunnelling contracts, even when extensive geotechnical investigations have been carried out at the tunnel site and a report of these investigations provided with the tender documents, informing the contractor of the nature and extent of subsurface conditions likely to be met with during execution of the works. This paper discusses the contractual aspects of the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard AS 2124-1986, General Conditions of Contract, in relation to tunnelling contracts. A comparison of this new clause is made with other latent conditions clauses in general conditions of contract in use in Australia and other commonwealth countries. It is seen that the new latent conditions clause in the recent Australian Standard 2124-1986 has, by providing for a reasonable apportionment of risks, attempted to minimize contractual disputes relating to latent conditions in tunnelling contracts and to provide a satisfactory basis for quick and efficient settlement of such disputes should they arise during execution of these contracts.
