It is common practice to include microspheres or similar density reducing agents in inherently insensitive water-based commercial explosives to achieve detonative sensitivity in the absence of chemical sensitisation. It has recently become possible to similarly include microspheres in LDAN (low density ammonium nitrate). Further to previous studies and publications to determine the benefits resulting from the use of microsphere enhanced LDAN technology in blasting, additional advantages are described in this document. These include range tests at independent testing facilities (Universal Tech Corporation û USA) which reflect results observed in the field, and support theoretical assumptions made when the products were introduced. Additionally, on-site studies in opencast pits using Heavy-ANFO blends incorporating modified LDAN, show that monetary savings can be realised through significant advantages gained in plant throughput and explosives use.

Geological modelling provides a means of spatially representing the three dimensional distribution of geological information to downstream stakeholders. The geologist completing the modelling work intimately understands the varying degrees of confidence, assumptions and extrapolation required to honour the data. Geological models are often taken and used by stakeholders without fully understanding this modelling process. This can lead to confusion amongst stakeholders when the geological model shows variable reconciliation. A method for visually communicating the confidence of the spatial distribution of geological models has been created by the Rio Tinto Iron Ore structural geology group for use primarily in geotechnical engineering investigations. A numeric confidence rating is assigned to each geological data point used in the creation of a geological surface. This is based on data type, collection method and reliability to indicate potential error in distance from its modelled location. In regions of sparse data, confidence ratings are inserted based upon the geologistÆs experience and knowledge of the geology, whereas mapped geological contacts or drill hole intersections are assigned a higher confidence rating. A regular grid of points is registered to the geological surface and each of these grid points is assigned a confidence rating using an inverse distance weighting using a nearest neighbour approach. The resulting grid is colour coded according to the confidence rating to provide a visual representation of the variable confidence of the geological surface in three dimensions. Subjectivity and bias from the geologist is minimised by critically analysing the input geological data and then applying this methodology to represent the confidence in the spatial characteristics of geological models. Understanding of this confidence enables mining professionals to make informed decisions and identify areas that require further geological investigative work. Garnierite mineralogy in saprolitic ore of the Goro lateritic nickel deposit, New Caledonia , was investigated using X-ray diffraction (XRD), optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and electron microprobe (EMP) analyses. These conspicuously, green-coloured phases occur either as submillimetre to centimetresized veins or as æbookletsÆ arranged in, macroscopic (subcentimetre sized), accordionlike structures supported in an undifferentiated matrix of mixed ÿ7+ and ÿ10+ phases. Within the veins, nickel for Mg solid solution increased from ten wt per cent NiO at the edge to 34 wt per cent NiO at the core, with vein edges comprising Ni-kerolite with <1.5 Ni per formula unit (pfu) grading to pimelite containing >1.5 Ni pfu at vein cores. The æbookletsÆ comprised nTpouite of formula, (Mg0.67Ni1.59Fe3+0.05)(Si2.17Al0.22)O5(OH)4 and averaged 30 per cent NiO. SEM element mapping highlighted the distribution and mineralogical association of Ni and Mg and emphasised the inverse relationship between Ni and Mg at the macroscopic (thin-section) scale. The Canadian mining industry was in turmoil in the early 1980s. The post-war era based on reconstruction faded away after the high demands for minerals in the 1950s and 1960s. Also, the industry had the misconception that the demand growth would continue for ever but the rapid growth of resource industries in the third world in the 60s and 70s, resulted in worldwide production overcapacity. The Canadian mining industry eventually recognised the facts and took drastic action for cost control and innovation in technology. The cost control had an immediate effect on the survival of the industry but resulted in only limited incremental gains. The economic problems that the Canadian mining industry faced in the early 1980s can be viewed now as a blessing in disguise. It was realised that for the Canadian mining industry to survive in the 21st century further gains were possible only through innovative technology. This conclusion led to a flurry of activity to establish mechanisms and delivery systems for innovative technology in the mining industry. Despite the initial difficulties in accepting high technology in the mining industry, it is being used increasingly in mining operations and will make future mining operations unrecognizable to present day mining engineers. The concept of an underground mine without underground staff seems to be far fetched, but it is possible that mines of the 21st century will approach the concept of very few underground operating personnel.

The Lafarge Marblehead Plant in Marblehead, Ohio, USA produces 4.2 million tonnes of sized aggregate yearly. In 1997, a program was instituted to maximise primary crusher productivity through the optimisation of blasting variables and procedures. A proprietary blasting shot report database and the Lafarge production database was statistically analysed to provide guidance in the program. Blasting powder factor (kg/m3) was the main control variable utilised to increase crusher throughput. In 2005, the program was refined to increase the production of certain high margin aggregate sizes and the reduction of fines. The principal blasting component affecting the percentage of high margin size production appears to be pattern area (burden and spacing area). This can be coupled with powder factor to optimise the production rate of high margin aggregate sizes. The size optimisation program incorporates the blasting shot report database, Lafarge production database, statistical analysis and aggregate sampling. A preliminary indication is that the production of high margin sizes (12.7 mm X 4.8 mm, 24.4 mm X 12.7 mm, and 50 mm X 25.4 mm) has been increased seven to 12 per cent utilising these techniques. As an added benefit, blasting costs have been reduced linearly as burden û spacing pattern areas have increased and powder factors have decreased. The program is ongoing and will investigate other blasting procedures and variables including electronic blasting caps to further increase the production of high margin products. The statistical methods involved in the analysis are described in this article for use in other mines and situations. The methods described can be used to optimise crusher throughput, digging rates and product size.

The Emperor gold deposit occurs on the western margin of a 5 Ma caldera in a large, mafic shoshonitic shield volcano on the island of Viti Levu, Fiji. Products from two major pulses of post-caldera intermediate volcanism filled the caldera. Caldera collapse-related steep and flat faults and zones of shattered rock provided per- meable conduits for vertical and lateral fluid migration and favourable sites for ore deposition. One large hydrothermal system, operating concurr- ently with extrusion of the second pulse of resurgent volcanism, may have produced porphyry- style alteration within the caldera, epithermal mineralization at Vatukoula, and weakly minera- lized, siliceous veins and breccias in an outflow zone northeast of Vatukoula.

Turbulence and its distribution are of great importance in flotation, and have received considerable attention recently. However, there is no mature technique to measure turbulence in three-phase (liquid-solid-gas) industrial flotation cells due to the opaque, highly aggressive and abrasive nature of the slurry involved. Previous research has shown that the piezoelectric vibration sensor (PVS) is a promising tool for turbulence measurement in industrial flotation cells. The PVS is a robust device that converts mechanical vibration to electrical signal, from which turbulence information can be extracted. An improved calibration method has allowed development of a frequency model to calculate the force applied to the sensor. Experimental results and comparison with laser doppler anemometry (LDA) have shown that the PVS can measure fluid kinetic energy, which is related to turbulent kinetic energy, a parameter used in the literature to represent turbulence in flotation. Laboratory measurement in a two-phase (water and air) 60 L cell and with slurry in a 3.5 L cell gave good stable results and mostly consistent trends between the measured turbulence profile and cell operation. When applied in a 300 m3 industrial cell filled with water, the addition of air or slurry to the cell resulted in a shift in the turbulence profile. This is expected because a change in fluid density will change the force applied to the sensor. It is therefore concluded that the piezoelectric sensor is an easy-to-use and robust technique that is fully capable of measuring turbulence in industrial flotation environments.CITATION:Meng, J, Tabosa, E, Xie, W, Runge, K C and Holtham, P, 2014. India has limited resources of coking coal. Most of the coking coal seams are located in Jharia Coalfield. These seams were worked in the past by the bord and pillar system in a haphazard manner, which has resulted in honeycombs of old working. Most of such areas are under fire. In order to meet the demand of coking coal in the 21st century, it is essential that the coal locked due to old underground workings is recovered fully by conducting opencast mining to an ultimate depth of 500 m. The major problem envisaged in conducting opencast mining in such areas will be the stability of pit slopes over voids and the behaviour of subsided material in the pit slopes. An attempt has been made to simulate this complex situation from a specific section of the rockmass of a mine in an equivalent material (EM) model. The old workings existing in upper coal seam (V) were simulated by developing staggered bord and pillar workings in two sections and depillaring them. Opencast mining was conducted for recovery of coal locked due to irregular working in coal seam V. The slope instability caused by intersection of the slope with the void, during frontal working (by shovel-dumper combination) was observed in various situations. A previous paper (1) indicated that electrowinning of copper at current densities considerably higher than those currently employed in electrowinning operations is technically feasible. It is of interest, therefore, to establish the extent of economic benefits which may be obtained from high current density operation and to determine the value of the optimum current density. Optimization of electrorefining processes has been discussed in considerable detail by Ibl (2) and Schmidt (3) whop from theoretical considerations, derived expressions for the optimum current density. In this work, general equations relating both the capital investment and the production cost for copper electrowinning plants to current density and plant capacity are established. From these equations, the optimum current density can be calculated for any desired plant capacity.

Benchmark practices in the mining industry include the establishment of Quality Programs — Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QAQC) — to monitor the correct execution of sampling protocols and control each stage of the ‘Sample Cycle’: Sample Collection, Preparation (comminution) and Analysis. QAQC reports commonly include statistical-numerical results that quantify performance of QAQC controls (field duplicates, preparation duplicates, blanks, standards etc). Graphics such as scatter plots, QQ plots, histograms and cumulative frequencies are used to represent the results. Statistical values including relative difference, absolute difference, relative variance, averages, T-test, and Zscores are used to quantitatively express the relationship between duplicate pairs ... but is an effective quality program just a statistical exercise? This paper aims to highlight the concept of ‘Quality Management’ (QM) as the precursor of continuous monitoring (ideally in real time) of QAQC results on Exploration, Production, Processing and Port samples, determined by trend analysis performed on a time and/or grades basis. Currently, there is a paradigm in the process of quality assurance that if individual data points fall within a predetermined acceptance limit then they are ‘acceptable’ and therefore suitable for informing operational and investment decisions. However, what is stated with respect to QM is that sometimes results found within the acceptance limits can indeed be internally biased, or show material deviations over a period of time, thereby impacting reconciliation results and/or potentially creating discrepancies with the final buyers. QM refers to the proactive detection of these ‘anomalous tendencies’, the approach and communication with the source of the information, the understanding of the reasons that cause the deficiencies, and the generation of agreed action plans to remediate the situation and ensure the consistency of results, in other words: continuous improvement on proactive manners.

Computer software has been developed to link real-time information generated by underground mine ventilation airflow monitoring sensors into a network simulation program to undertake network simulations and allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. Results were used in the development of a computerised monitoring and simulation system to provide immediate or real-time data on air behaviour within each branch of an underground mine ventilation network through linking of sensors to the ventilation network simulation software. The outcome of the project is an online system that can report changes in the mine ventilation system, allow causes of changes to be isolated and rectified, improve balancing of available air throughout the mine, allow improved approaches to regulator setting and dispense with much of the labour used for underground ventilation measurement. The work activities in both coal and metalliferous Australian mines have involved examination and modelling of regulators, software modification and considerable mine site testing and optimising activities. There is some discussion on approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information. New systems will be part of a total mine information management system. They will have to be cost effective and justified by gains in productivity. New systems will need to provide simulation of contaminant production such as diesels, vehicle heat, strata heat, radiation, blast fumes and other gases. More robust real-time ventilation simulation systems will be required. Personnel and vehicle identification and production tracking will be collected to provide integrated ventilation system monitoring and control. This paper examines a study to gain greater understanding of computerised real-time airflow monitoring and control within the mine production system to provide immediate simulated information in each branch of an underground ventilation network and to allow interpretation of key system data and operational changes. A case study implementing a real-time airflow monitoring and control is discussed. Approaches to control of flow through ventilation systems with increased information are discussed. The concept of a system that can be linked to or be part of a total mine information management system is developed. Such a system can form the base for mine automation that allows mines to incrementally and cost effectively implement monitoring and control to further seek gains in productivity.

The development and construction of the Grasberg block cave mine (GBC) is in progress, currently targeting initiation of caving in late 2018. Current production planning anticipates ramping up to full production of 130 000 to 160 000 t/d by 2027. As GBC approaches the production phase, there is a high priority on increasing the accuracy and level of detail in the production plan. The advance of the cave front directly controls the drawbell opening rate that is achievable. Therefore, an essential component of this plan is to produce an undercutting and drawbell sequence that honours the caving parameters that have been set for the mining blocks by the GBC production planning team.The PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) mine planning team and the Geovia caving business unit have developed a computational tool (Undercut Tool) capable of generating an undercutting sequence that follows a set of caving rules, such as advance rate per tunnel, maximum blasted area per period, control of lead-lag and shape of the undercut face. This tool also produces a drawbell sequence that honours the undercutting advance sequence, which is ultimately used to generate a life-of-mine production plan. This paper describes the inputs and outputs of the Undercut Tool that have been used to compute the long-term production plan for the GBC mine. It will further describe how the Undercut Tool takes into account operational constraints and geotechnical considerations that must be considered when developing a defendable production plan. Included is a discussion of the initial results of the planning outcomes from the tool; it will demonstrate how this work will support specific aspects of the plan such as the detailed undercut production drill and blast plans for the drill ring sequence, as well as how that plan will drive the drawpoint opening plan.CITATION:Villa, D, Brannon, C A, Dipas, C A and Vega, H A, 2017. Six Australian coals were selected to determine their potential to produce, ultra low ash (less than 2 per cent) coal by progressive size reduction followed by density separation and/or froth flotation. Density separation in organic liquids is effective in the absence of contaminating liberated mineral matter which can be removed by froth flotation with several cleaning stages. The limit of cleaning of these coals was an ash value of 1 per cent while commercially attractive yields were obtained at 2 - 3 per cent ash depending on the coal.

An introductory review of the current grade control blasting techniques (selective mining strategies) used in the Eastern Goldfields has recently been undertaken. The survey was initiated and conducted by the Western Australian School of Mines. Four distinct selective mining strategies have been identified and a number of trends have been highlighted. Many operations, however, have developed techniques which use a hybrid method to suit the site conditions. The aim of all the mining strategies is to produce an optimum product. The optimum product is one which contains no diluent and experiences no mixing of the various identified ore and waste blocks and is fully reco- vered at the minimum overall operating cost. Due to this unified aim all of the grade control blasting techniques have many common design Features.

Geotechnical models developed during the open pit mine planning stage are generally three-dimensional (3D) in component to capture the spatial variation in geological, structural, hydrogeological and geomechanical conditions. Yet when geotechnical analysis is completed, often the 3D geological, hydrogeological and structural models are simplified to two-dimensions (2D). This paper demonstrates this simplification, through referenced case studies, can lead to the wrong failure mechanism being analysed and/or a conservative Factor of Safety (FOS), or Strength Reduction Factor (SRF), being calculated, leading to a false sense of stability. There exists a paradigm that the FOS calculated using 2D limit equilibrium (LE), or the Strength Reduction Factor (SRF) calculated using 2D finite element (FE), modelling methods is generally conservative, ie lower, than the true FOS. However, this assumption that 3D FOS, or 3D SRF, is always higher than 2D FOS, or 2D SRF, is not always correct (Chen and Chameau, 1983; Bromhead and Martin, 2004; Herza et al, 2017; Pyke, 2017; Dana et al, 2018).

Froth flotation relies on an attractive force between a particle and a bubble to selectively extract particles from a mixture. The range and magnitude of this attractive force is an area of ongoing investigation. We describe measurements of the effect of dissolved gases on the long-range attractive surface forces between a silica plate and a glass sphere in aqueous octadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (C18TACl) solutions. The measurements follow on the work of Sakamoto et al (2002) who have concluded that long-range interactions occur in air-equilibrated surfactant solutions but not in degassed solutions. In the present work, we have measured attractive forces that have a much larger in magnitude than the expected van der Waals force in solutions that were degassed by the same procedure used by Sakamoto et al (2002). We find that the forces are most attractive at 5 + 10-6 M C18TACl, which is close to the charge compensation point (ccp) of the glass sphere. At this concentration, the attractive force decays exponentially with distance and the decay length is 34 in air-saturated solution, and 38 nm in degassed solutions. In both air-equilibrated and degassed solution, the force is quite sensitive to the concentration of surfactant. The force is also sensitive to the pH. We note that our degassing procedure increases the pH of the solution from about 5.7 to 6.6 (presumably by removal of dissolved CO2). We find that the forces measured in degassed solution can be reproduced by using a solution that was equilibrated in air, then the pH was increased by addition of NaOH. Therefore, we conclude that the main effect of degassing in our experiments is to raise the pH. We show that the range and magnitude of the attractive force decreases in the presence of salt (NaCl). This suggests an electrostatic mechanism for the attraction. Possible mechanisms for the attractive force are examined, including the mechanisms that rely on a patchy coverage of surfactant on the silica surface.

The use of coal as a fuel for heat and power generation has a long history. During the nineteenth century most of the present combus- tion technologies were pioneered, as shown in Table 1, This period was associated with the "golden age" of coal and its contribution of almost 80% of the world's energy demands in the early,1900s . The decline in the use of coal has been due to the transfer of the heavy transportation area to diesel power, the elimination of coal as a household fuel and the substitution of oil for coal in power plants. Coal remains the major fuel for the electric utility industry and the present paper will be concerned primarily with that application. Table 1 outlines the development of coal tech- nology with the parallel understanding of coal as a material and its behaviour during combus- tion. Clearly many developments in combustion technology have occurred in this century, although most of the processes had been invented in the nineteenth century. Also, the great expanse in coal research of the past few decades has led to a greater understanding of the coal combustion process.

Reporting Codes are not prescriptive on methodologies to report or classify Mineral Resource Estimation results, but the assessment of risk and uncertainty is required, and is likely to be increasingly important in future Code updates. The 2012 JORC Code indicates that relative confidence in tonnage-grade estimations should be considered for classification, and that there should be a discussion of relative accuracy and confidence levels in the Mineral Resource Estimate. These considerations are also relevant to the drill hole spacing required for various classification categories, along with other geological and data quality criteria. This paper summarises the theory, principles and current practice of various drill hole spacing analysis techniques for both achieving a desired level of resource categorisation and for optimising grade control or resource drill-out costs. The authors provide practitioners with a guide in their use to assess uncertainty and relative accuracy, as illustrated by a number of case studies. While all drill hole spacing studies rely on the assumption of consistency of the continuity model from current to future drilling, the range of methods available provide much more objective outcomes than previously adopted ‘rules-of-thumb’.

University education in Australia is changing, driven by greater market orientation, reduced funding available per student, especially in the higher-cost minerals industry disciplines, and the call for more flexible delivery of subjects and courses to meet changing lifestyles and expectations. The opportunity exists for a true partnership to develop between industry, government and academia that will reshape minerals education in Australia and secure the future supply of the specialists industry needs to maintain international competitiveness. If this partnership does not emerge, it is anticipated that AustraliaÆs somewhat fragmented and unstable higher education system, especially in the disciplines of particular relevance to the minerals industry, will be put under further pressure so decreasing its effectiveness to produce quality graduates. The Minerals Council of Australia in 1998 published æBack from the BrinkÆ, a discussion paper which proposed strategies to build a world class minerals tertiary education system in Australia. Those strategies are now being implemented collaboratively with principal emphasis on the disciplines of mining engineering, metallurgy and earth science and as far as process is concerned, on the necessity to æcooperate to competeÆ. For metallurgy, the challenge is to integrate more closely undergraduate teaching with the existing world-class research centres and to link the tertiary institutions in such a manner that the strengths of all components are harnessed and then made available nationally in major population centres and at remote sites where appropriate. For industry the challenge is to build effective partnerships with the academic community that will enable and assist the agreed course of action to take place.

The Ernest Henry Iron Oxide Copper Gold deposit is hosted in a large dilation between two moderately dipping shear zones found in the footwall and hanging wall of the deposit. These shears are controlled by a large diorite intrusion to the north-east and south-west of the deposit, formed ~1660 Ma. A shear zone dubbed the ‘Interlens’ uncovered through underground workings truncates the main orebody into two lenses, and is hypothesized to have formed in conjunction with the Hanging Wall Shear Zone and Footwall Shear Zone. All three shears dip moderately to the SSE (50–140) from open cut exposures through to the current mining horizon approximately 800 m below the surface. Routine geological work and a capital drilling campaign has identified a significant flexure in these sub parallel ore bounding shears with increasing depth. A shift in shear orientation in the Interlens over approximately 100 m vertically from ~50° to the SSE to a steep, easterly trend (~85° to the east) is observed in both drill core and exposures in the underground workings. It is hypothesized the diorite intrusive to the south-west of the deposit controls the shear zone geometries at depth. The geometry of the Interlens mirrors the surface expression of the Proterozoic package of the orebounding shears to the south-west of the deposit, suggesting the surface geometries of the shear zones are consistent with depth. Additional drilling to explore the validity of this hypothesis is planned for the near future to better understand the structural controls on the Ernest Henry mineralisation with increasing depth.
