There is much debate on the Competent Persons qualifying criteria for providing classified resource estimates for public reporting. The CRIRSCO family of codes including the JORC Code, SAMREC, PERC and NI43–101, require Competent Persons to have at least five years ‘relevant’ experience and belong to professional bodies. These codes provide further, albeit vague, guidelines to assist individuals with their personal decision to take on the mantle of ‘Competent Person’. There is a risk, however, that these qualifying criteria can result in ill-prepared Competent Persons whose actions and recommendations would undermine their own reputation and that of the organisations that employ them; the integrity of the profession and the principles based reporting systems; as well as the stability of stock markets that rely on these estimates.Based on doctoral study on the development of professional competency within the mining industry, this paper presents an evaluation of the suitability of the current qualifying criteria as well as an analysis of alternative criteria. The research included a series of interviews with industry experts and an online survey of resource geologists. Semi-structured interviews provided a sense of experts’ expectations and interpretation of the current definition of ‘Competent Person’. The comprehensive online survey included a self-assessment, a series of situational questions designed to evaluate responses to typical resource geology scenarios and a set of open-ended questions relating to factors contributing to competency development.A summary of the data analysis, interpretation of the results and a set of recommendations for revised ‘Competent Person’ qualifying criteria are presented. This paper describes the operation involved in the sinking of a concrete-lined elliptical-shaped shaft at North Broken Hill Limited.Major factors such as geological features, future ventilation, ore haulage at depth and their relation to the location and selection of the type of shaft are described.Features covered in the sinking of the shaft include equipment details, with special reference to mechanical mucking, operational cycles based on time study analyses for sinking, concreting and the placing of steel sets. Safety precaution and statistical data is alsoincluded.INTRODUCTIONDue to the northerly pitch of the ore bodies in North Broken Hill Limited leases at approximately 42°, and the deepening of the active mining zone, it became apparent that No. 2 Shaft, the main operating shaft, would become unsuitable for the extraction of ore from the lower levels.Another major problem was the ventilation of the lower levels, and it was evident, that to ventilate efficiently these, and deeper levels, another upcast ventilation system would be required.Consideration was given therefore to the following: 1. The Newcrest Mining Limited Telfer Gold Mine consists of an underground sublevel cave (SLC) operation located 734 m directly below active open pit operations. Open pit and underground current production rates are 50 million and 5.7 million tonnes per anum (Mt/a) respectively. The SLC was initiated in late 2006 with breakthrough planned to occur on the 5484 bench of the west wall in late 2009. Risk to the south ramp was identified during this time, resulting in the construction of the north ramp. The SLC was continually tracked from initiation with a suite of monitoring systems and managed with a Major Hazard Management Plan (MHMP) and associated Trigger Action and Response Plans (TARP). At breakthrough the eastern limb of the cave was located within a 70 m horizontal distance from the south ramp. The south ramp was closed in October 2009 due to significant slope deformation, extensive cracking in the berms and batters between the ramp and breakthrough bench and a major failure 250 m to the north of the cave breakthrough. Wall response was first identified from slope deformation measurements taken by the wall monitoring radar in May 2009, at which point the SLC was 160 m from breakthrough. The impact of the SLC on the slope is a unique case with the monitoring systems in place able to provide data on the slope reaction to the SLC progression. This paper will discuss the management of the south ramp such as the early interpretation of risk associated with cave breakthrough, monitoring systems implemented to track the cave progression and wall deformation, data integration and interpretation and risk management. Following the closure of the south ramp further instrumentation programs and risk assessments were conducted to determine the risk of re-opening this haulage route. The outcomes of this program will also be presented.

The cause of spontaneous combustion of pyritic black shale has been studied by calorimetry and other techniques. The conditions required for ignition to occur are: 1. A critical mass of pyritic black shale. 2. Acidity. 3. Fine shale particle size. 4. A high ambient temperature. 5. The exclusion of air during the preparation of a calorimeter charge. The reaction is characterised by an initial incubation period during which an unknown phase is produced. The build up and oxidation of this phase results in a chain reaction culminating in ignition. The mechanism is believed to involve the interaction of pyrite, sulphuric acid, ferrous sulphate, or meta-stable oxysulphates, with ammonium nitrate. The recommended strategy for prevention of premature detonation is to neutralise the acids in the shale with quick and slow release alkaline materials.

An 18-month project was undertaken to test the effectiveness of controlled daily tidal exchange augmented with hydrated lime treatment of surface waters as an approach for remediating a severe acid sulfate soil disturbance at East Trinity, Cairns, north Queensland. Actual acid sulfate soils were producing hazardous levels of acid and heavy metal contaminants and degrading approximately 720 of the 940 ha East Trinity property and the adjacent foreshores. A government-led research team established a series of research projects with the aim of characterising the site (soils, water, terrain) and testing the effect of the lime-assisted tidal exchange management strategy on soils, water, sediments and biota.

The mining of iron ore is a high volume low margin business because the value of this commodity is significantly lower than that of base metals. The main metallurgical challenges in most of the iron ore projects proposed for treatment nowadays have been in finding the optimum flowsheet for the treatment of magnetite ores, mixed magnetite-hematite ores and even ores that have banded ironstone formations (BIF). The associated plant designs incorporate very high capacity milling systems to grind the ore down prior to magnetic separation and in being highly capital intensive requires substantial investment in mega processing plants with associated infrastructure to mill down the run-of-mine ore to the desired treatment size for upgrading.To minimise the cost of infrastructure, better beneficiation techniques and technologies are being sought to assist in reducing upfront ROM feed to allow for reduction in overall treatment plant footprint necessary in extracting the desired downstream product. This paper discusses such beneficiation techniques and advancement in technologies for the upgrading of coarse and fine iron ore utilising dense media separation (DMS), jigging, wet magnetic separation, dry magnetic separation, flotation and x-ray processing.Another group of iron ore projects involve the mining of hematite ore below the water table. Often the mined ore is wet and sticky. This combination requires high capacity processing of feed material utilising large scrubbers or attritioning units to effectively remove the slimes component present in the feedstock. The fines removed, usually below 1 mm, are then discarded in large tailings storage facilities. Approaches to recovering the saleable material contained within these fines will also be investigated in this paper. This not only implies possible reduction in slimes discard footprint, but also holds potential benefit in augmenting overall yield and recovery of hematite product.CITATION:van Niekerk, L M, 2013. The transport network in Europe is probably one of the most important systems for the European economy and society. Trans-national transport routes play a vital role in the traffic of goods and the supply of the population. In this respect, critical road infrastructures, like bridges, tunnels or control centres, can have a bottleneck function. Any disturbance of these structures could lead to negative consequences for the population and the economy as a whole.Project SecMan – Security Manual – is a simple four-step procedure for the identification of critical road infrastructures; assessment of these infrastructures regarding various man-made threats and the determination of effective protection measures was developed. These methodologies are summarised and combined into a comprehensive best-practice manual that allows for a trans-national structured and holistic security-risk-management approach for owners and operators of road infrastructures in Europe.Currently no common processes, methodologies or standards exist in Europe regarding the consideration of security relevant events for critical road transport infrastructures, eg tunnels, control centres and bridges. Attacks on the former can have severe short- and long-term effects with high media attention. A trans-national risk management approach would increase the possibilities for prevention as well as mitigation. A trans-national emergency response strategy would increase preparedness, as well as facilitating and accelerating the reaction in the case of an event.The main objective of the project is to develop a practical process for the identification of critical road infrastructures based on generally accepted security aspects. Blast designs can have productive and non-productive impacts on downstream stages, mine productivity and operating costs. On the other hand, ground vibration, fragmentation, and back break caused by blasting impose damage and financial penalties and which must be controlled by blast design. One of the significant variables in blast design is the burden. In this study, the potentials of artificial neural network are investigated in prediction of burden in the Sungun copper open-pit mine. Input data were assembled through 18 blasting blocks according to different levels and experimental geomechanical investigation. To construct the model blastability index, uniaxial compression strength, hole diameter, specific weight of rock, rock quality designation and cohesion strength are taken as input parameters, whereas, burden is considered as an output parameter. Mean square error was used as the performance function and back propagation algorithm as the training function, containing four hidden layers and 14 data sets. Four sets of data were used to make sure that correct training had been carried out. This produced the coefficient correlation of 0.662.

Thiourea leaching has been applied to a refractory gold concentrate previously treated by bacterial oxidation. Following the bio-oxidation, gold has been leached in acidic thiourea solutions, under different pH(1 - 2.4), thiourea concentrations (2 - 15 g/1), ferric ion concentrations (0.04 - 3 g/1) and temperatures (298 - 333 K). Through this procedure, it was possible to increase gold extraction from 40 to 77 per cent. The increase in temperature raised gold extraction and reduced reagent consumption. Sodium sulphite addition was also very effective in lowering thiourea consumption. Staged leaching operations with interstage acid washing and carbon-in-leach experiments were tested, in an attempt to increase gold extraction. The results of thiourea leaching were compared with those obtained with cyanidation.

Classical electroslag remelting of consumable electrodes is a drop-by-drop melt feeding through a slag layer into a renewing molten metal bath, slowly solidifying into a homogeneous, dense, defectfree ingot in a copper water-cooled mould. The new look at the additive nature of the electroslag remelting (ESR) process in a protective atmosphere allowed us to formulate the principles of a comprehensive thermodynamic-based model that can predict dynamic changes in slag and metal composition at certain ingot remelting. The model considers drastically different slag-to-metal mass ratios at the beginning and end of remelting and predicts gas, slag and metal composition in a chain of thermodynamic subsystems. Despite consisting of calcium fluoride and stable oxides, the ESR slag can oxidise main and active elements from steel and alloys (primarily aluminium, titanium and silicon) due to chemical reactions between slag and metal. ESR is not an electrochemical process in its nature. However, slags are ionic melts and deviation in their composition causes a change in their properties, affecting both operation mode and ingot quality. Another important understanding derived from the modern metallurgy technological route is that the ability to refine metal from impurities is not a priority for the ESR because consumable electrode has already passed all stages of refining and deep degassing at ladle treatment that changes ESR slags engineering principles. The critical importance became slag’s ability to generate process heat and keep the melting composition in the metal bath unchanged (except for non-metallic inclusions assimilation). Slag engineering for ESR required a compromise between chemical inertness to a metal composition and desired physical properties deriving from technological reasons. The Directed Chemical Bonds Concept (DCBC) in a multicomponent oxide system was used to build predictive models of electric conductivity and the melting temperature of fluoride-oxide slag based on their chemical composition. Both models help to design a customised composition of effective slags for steel and alloy groups or individual grades, and they are significant steps in the development of a comprehensive model of electroslag remelting.

Results are presented of the investigation of gas dynamics of the blast furnace process obtained on laboratory models and operating furnaces. Gas residence times were measured using a helium tracer technique developed for the purpose. Residence times were determined in furnaces of 1007 m3 and 1719 m3 and results used in the calculation of the burden parameters and to estimate the distribution of the gas flow along the furnace radius. The effect of tuyere injection of coal dust on gas distribution was also investigated and the advantage of continuous injection compared with intermittent injection is noted. The unevenness of gas distribution across the furnace area is found to correlate well with differences in the size analysis of the iron-bearing component of the burden. The mixing of the gas streams between the neighbouring raceways was studied. It is shown that in the central region of the furnace gases from every tuyere are mixed together, whilst in the peripheral regions mixing is more localised and includes only the sections consisting of five adjacent tuyeres. A solution is proposed to the problem of a theoretical evaluation of the critical gas velocity. A simple relationship between the Reynolds and the Archimedes numbers was obtained from which, after substitution of the burden size data and the gas parameters, it is -possible to evaluate the critical gas velocity. Conclusions include information relating to the optimisation of the gas distribution and views on reducing gas injection at elevated furnace levels.

With the current focus in the mining industry on reducing costs, while simultaneously improving ore quality, infrared spectroscopy is a tool that can potentially assist companies to meet both challenges. Changes in the nature of infrared spectra are strongly influenced by changes in mineralogy, which is a key input variable for exploration (geology and orebody modelling and ore characterisation) and mining (pit design, mine scheduling and processing plant design/management).Infrared spectroscopic logging of drill holes has been embedded as a standard tool in BHP Billiton Iron Ore exploration, with a process set up to automatically deliver mineralogy and associated imagery to the end users (typically exploration geologists). The availability of consistent and automated mineralogy drill hole logs across a project is improving the output quality and reducing re-work.BHP Billiton Iron Ore is now looking into using the same infrared spectroscopic data for other applications, including improving predictions of geometallurgical and geotechnical parameters. Trials show that addition of infrared spectroscopic data to conventional data sets (element analysis and depth information) is significantly improving the accuracy of regression models to predict the lump-fine ratio.Further initiatives around infrared spectroscopic data in BHP Billiton Iron Ore include the installation of infrared spectroscopic sensors over conveyor belts, infrared spectroscopic mine face scanning and infrared spectroscopic blasthole logging. The ultimate vision is to have consistent, seamless mineralogical data from infrared spectroscopic sensing available throughout the mineral value chain (exploration/mining/processing). This seamless infrared spectroscopic data ‘bridge’ will allow the transfer of knowledge between the different sections of the value chain (exploration, mining and processing). For example, ore handle-ability could be predicted on exploration samples using regression models built from processing plant observations. In the opposite direction, information gathered about the buried stratigraphy by infrared spectroscopy utilised during exploration, could be used to predict the stratigraphy encountered during mining. This collaboration across BHP Billiton Iron Ore is expected to deliver significant savings, while improving the quality of the final product, thus helping to drive efficiency over the next decade.CITATION:Haest, M, Mittrup, D and Dominguez, O, 2015. OneSteel Whyalla’s grate-kiln-cooler pelletising plant was commissioned in 1968 processing haematite feed from the local South Middleback Ranges mining area. The existence of a magnetite resource beneath the haematite ore at Iron Duke had been known for some time. In 2004, a decision was made to covert the primary iron source for the Whyalla steelworks from haematite to magnetite – known as project magnet. The intent of the project was to convert the feed to the steelworks from haematite to magnetite and to free up the remaining haematite resource for export. The pelletising plant was cut over to a magnetite feed in 2007.The thermochemical differences of magnetite compared to haematite are threefold:1. the introduction of an exothermic reaction during conversion of magnetite to haematite,2. the absence of bound water which existed within the haematite, and3. lower gangue content requiring lower fluxing levels and therefore lower calcination energy demand.The combination of these differences results in a significantly different induration requirement for magnetite as compared to haematite. The change therefore required extensive research and test work to design modifications to the furnace and to ensure appropriate risk mitigation for the Whyalla steelworks.Preliminary pot-grate test work was performed to define the pellet chemistry and confirm the suitability of the magnetite to produce pellets suitable for the OneSteel blast furnace. A heating curve was developed by use of computer-based heat and mass balance modelling. Extensive pilot scale grate-kiln-cooler test work was then performed to confirm the heating curve and to verify and fine-tune the pellet properties. Computation fluid dynamics was used to design the physical changes to the furnace required to achieve the proposed heating curve.Following installation of an additional preheat zone, including a wall and dilution air fans, into the preheating furnace, and installation of an additional wall into the cooler, the modified furnace was commissioning in December 2007. The plant performed as expected during commissioning with the actual heating curve matching the proposed curve and the produced pellets within blast furnace specifications.

A major high grade zinc deposit, Dugald River has fine-grained and complex mineral associations which provide considerable metallurgical challenges for both mineral dressers and downstream processors. A long history of metallurgical testing focusing on mineralogy and flotation concentrate production has shown that while separate lead and zinc concentrates can be produced at saleable grades, high levels of iron, and particularly manganese, are likely to place constraints on the marketing of zinc concentrate produced from deeper zones where coincidentally lode development is at its maximum. Testwork has focused on characterising the flotation response of ore types ranging from banded and stringer sulphides to brecciated ores in a variety of sulphide matrices. A high level of variability with lower than expected metal recoveries has been indicated across some of the higher grade brecciated ores. However, the dominant slatey breccia has generally provided the best results. Heavy media preconcentration testwork has been moderately encouraging and at this stage, although value adding downstream of concentrate production on-site is not seen as an economic option processing developments are being monitored on a broad front. Providing satisfactory means can be developed for handling manganese during downstream processing of the concentrate, it is not difficult to see a world-class operation emerging from the resource in the medium-term Future.

As mines get deeper, the critical underground temperature limits will be exceeded, and an increasing number of mines will need to implement, expand or modify cooling systems. Surface cooling plants have many advantages over underground cooling such as efficient heat rejection, and lower relative capital cost; however the delivery of cooling through long underground distances can result in lost refrigeration capacity before the chilled air reaches the areas it is needed most. Refrigeration plants are therefore often overdesigned in size and capacity to compensate for underground losses.More mines are now utilising real-time monitoring and automated control of ventilation airflow and fan systems to ensure the conditions underground are safe and productive, and power consumption is efficiently managed. There may be significant opportunities to extend ventilation monitoring and control into the refrigeration delivery and control system.Energy reduction is an effective way to reduce costs and CO2 emissions, which is an increasingly important part of corporate governance. More efficient refrigeration control is a further step toward reducing energy consumption. This paper looks at an added step in how real-time monitoring can assist in controlling the output and chilled air delivery of a cooling plant. The requirements, implementation, benefits and challenges will be discussed.

Innovation and Business Skills Australia (IBSA) commissioned The Boston Consulting Group (BCG) to undertake a study into how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. This report builds on a previous study prepared by BCG in the early 1990s for the Industry Taskforce on Leadership and Management Skills (Karpin Committee), which provided a snapshot of the Senior Manager in 2010. The following powerpoint slides summarise the 2020 Vision û The Manager of the 21st Century û outlining how the role of AustraliaÆs senior managers is likely to change between now and 2020 and to identify the skills and attributes that will be needed to respond to those changes. The semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill at the MMG Century operation has failing load cells that are essential to the control strategy used to stabilise the mill. Currently, mill-bearing pressure is used as a proxy for the load cells, but it has been found to be a noisy signal and lacking in useful sensitivity. It is also prone to variations and drift due to temperature. After consideration of a number of options, a non-contact acoustic array has been installed around the SAG mill to provide a more stable proxy load signal as well as other information about the internal operation of the?mill.The installation consists of 12 microphones to provide some detail into the operational differences that occur during normal operations at the MMG Century SAG mill. This acoustic approach acknowledges that operational grinding mills emit significant acoustic emissions that are a consequence of the dynamic environment prevailing inside them.Previous studies have attributed the acoustic noise to a range of events that occur inside these mills (Pax, 2011; 2012). Consequently, non-contact acoustic determinations of in-mill behaviour can provide powerful insights into the operation of the primary comminution tumbling mills. By measuring key microphone signal attributes at different positions around a mill, a holistic picture of mill internal operation can be developed.This paper will describe the installation of the 12 microphones and discuss the use of the acoustic load signals as a proxy for failing load cells. It will also present data from new observations of internal mill dynamics and the results of implementation of control using these acoustic signals. Esso Australia Ltd. operates a large natural gas producing system in the Gippsland Basin, supplying gas to the Gas and Fuel Corporation of Victoria, the State Electricity Commission of Victoria and several industrial customers. Gas reaches the Longford processing plants from three offshore platforms via a network of large diameter pipelines, which must be protected against the formation of ice-like hydrates. When gas production commenced in 1969, methanol was used to inhibit hydrate formation in the offshore pipelines. However, later investigations showed that the methanol was causing excessive degradation of molecular sieve in the onshore gas-processing plants. (Molecular sieve is used to remove water and H2S from the gas prior to further processing to remove heavy hydrocarbons.)

The optical basicity (A, Pb2+ as probe ion) of various oxide glass systems has been measured to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts. Best conditions of glassy fragments to measure A were as follow, (1) 1 ti 4 x 10-2 wt% Pb content, (2) 0.2 mm in thickness, (ii) enough annealing (about 10 hr) at a temperature 200¦C below Tg., and (4) polishing a surface well. the variation of A with composition was correlated to that of relative oxygen activity of slag melts. The estimation of basicity of slag melts from it could be valid. The A of opaque and coloured quenched slags could not be measured. An approximately linear relationship, however, exsisted between the isomer shifts (b) of Fe3+ ion in slag derived from the Mossbauer effect and A. Therefore, -4 of various metallurgical slag could be estimated from this relationship. These results can be expected to establish the new basicity scale of slag melts as the Louis basicity.

High pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) technology is growing to be a common comminution tool in iron ore processing. The technology finds a wide acceptance and presents specific benefits in coarse ore grinding and closed-circuit grinding in preparation of ball mill feed, right down to the other end of the particle size spectrum for iron ore pellet feed preparation.A growing number of minerals processing plants are facing higher operating costs and difficulties due to a scarcity of process water, which in some cases is a result of more stringent environmental constraints. In addition, many new iron ore deposits are located in more arid regions of the world. These challenges have led to operators taking a new look at dry processing of iron ores.The use of dry crushing and classification technology in cement production from blast furnace slag, clinker material or limestone feed stocks indicates that the technology may be applied in minerals processing. In addition, dry processing provides the possibility of generating a final product from finely disseminated and inter-grown ores at sizes near or well below 100 µm, as may be required for beneficiation techniques such as in fine magnetic separation, flotation or magnetic flocculation.Dry grinding by HPGR has a number of specific features, challenges and opportunities, including balancing power input, moisture content requirements and classification efficiency in the process design. HPGR parameters and the latest HPGR design and sizing capabilities indicate considerable potential benefits from this dry processing technology.This paper highlights some of the specific issues that play a role in dry HPGR application, with respect to energy and materials balances.
