Surface subsidence resulting from "total extraction" of coal in the Collie Basin first occured in 1987 when Western Collieries Ltd trialled the Wongawilli mining method. Because very little quantitative subsidence data existed for the weak, Permian sediments, a research program was set up prior to the extraction of the first panel. The objective of the study was to be able to predict subsidence characteristics and effects prior to mining future total extraction panels. Attempts at predicting subsidence began using existing subsidence models from other coal mining regions, however, as more site information became available, it became clear that it was necessary to develop a separate, she specific predictive model for the Collie Coal Basin. Analysis of extensive field monitoring data for both surface and subsurface subsidence has produced a series of empirical models which can predict the shape of surface subsidence troughs and corresponding tilts, and strains for rectangular panels and describe the sequences of ground movement from the mine roof through to the ground surface.

A key premise to this paper is that most people involved in the design and implementation of drilling and blasting operations could benefit from a greater understanding of the geological materials, deposits and landforms they are dealing with. The second key ingredient for successful blasting is the concept of blasting objective. Mine operators and blasting contractors must be clear on what drives their costs (blasting leverage) and should formulate blasting objectives and operational targets which help in this regard. Many operators ignore geology descriptors and features apart from the name of the rock and start crudely quantifying the rock mass properties in terms of uniaxial compressive strength, or even worse still as hard or soft. This occurs too early in the design process and not much attention is paid to the geological materials, geological structures and the characteristics of the deposit they intend to excavate. In effect the rock type name and the strength descriptor become the site geology. Furthermore many blasting operators do not formalise their blasting objective, do not set operational targets and do not measure results to the degree required for continuous improvement. In this paper a number of civil, surface mine and underground mine blasting applications are tabulated in terms of typical blasting objectives and common geological materials. A good description of geological materials can convey a lot of useful information for blasting operators if they are able to accommodate this knowledge. In addition a clear statement of the blasting objective and associated operational targets will maximise the likelihood of achieving blast-driven downstream productivity improvements. Localised indicator kriging was developed following a similar approach used by Marat Abzalov (2006) in his paper titled æLocalised uniform conditioning (LUC): A new approach for direct modelling of small blocksÆ. Abzalov introduced the idea of mapping panel distributions from uniform conditioning onto selective mining unit-sized blocks that were created using ordinary kriging. This concept of remapping panel distributions was applied to multiple indicator kriging histograms.At Newmont a program was developed that made the remapping of MIK histograms to SMU sized blocks extremely efficient and was subsequently tested on several gold deposits. The results have been encouraging as the localised indicator kriging (LIK) method has eliminated many issues that have plagued both ordinary kriging and multiple indicator kriging. Use of localised indicator kriging methodology limits the smearing of high-grade and the over-smoothing of grade that is common and difficult to control in OK but retains the ability for localising grades. LIK also simplifies change-of-support corrections, eliminates un-mineable slivers of low or high-grade when dealing with small tonnages, and allows for the mapping of linear and non-linear estimates into the same block.

The relationship between the process variables and hydrodynamics of a downflow concurrent column (Jameson cell) was investigated in both two and three-phase systems. Gas holdups from 10 to -60 per cent were obtained at gas rates up to 15 cm/s (STP), liquid (slurry) rates up to 25 cm/s, frother concentrations of 5 and 25 ppm, and slurry density (silica) up to 1.23 g/cm3 ina 3.8 cm diameter, 190 cm high column with a 0.5 cm diameter nozzle. Gas holdup decreases with feed rate and increases with gas rate, reaching a maximum (-60 per cent) at a gas rate to feed rate ratio of about one. Gas holdups were higher with slurry compared to water as feed. Stable operation was difficult to maintain at high gas rates especially with low frother dosage; operation was not possible without some frother. Instability was characterised by loss of pool level or formation of slugs. The slugs could move up or down or remain oscillatory. A quantitative relationship between the variables and gas holdup or onset of instability was not identified. Conductivity and pressure-based techniques were successfully tested on-line for estimation of gas holdup and to judge the state of operation (eg formation of slugs).

A consistent and reliable international approach to public reporting of a mining companyÆs main assets, its Mineral Resources and Mineral Reserves, has become of increasing importance in recent years with the rapid globalisation of the mining industry. Through the efforts of the Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), a committee representing national resource/reserve reporting committees in Australia, South Africa, UK/Ireland/Western Europe, Canada, USA and Chile, the reporting standards in most æwesternÆ countries use almost identical resource and reserve definitions and are generally around 90 - 95 per cent compatible. New codes based on the CRIRSCO model are being developed or considered in other countries, including Peru and the Philippines. This unified approach has provided the mining industry, regulators and investors with a common framework to report and interpret mineral resource and reserve estimates, thereby facilitating funding to the mining industry through improved investor understanding and confidence. The common reporting standards are reflected in the CRIRSCO International Template, available on CRIRSCOÆs web site, a document that is kept æliveÆ by reflecting the best of the most recently published CRIRSCO-type national standards. In a significant exception to this unified industry approach, the USA Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) requires adherence to its own standard, only partly compatible with CRIRSCO-type standards, with adverse and costly implications for companies listed in the USA. A major industry submission was presented to SEC in April 2005 which, if accepted, would bring about considerable compatibility of CRIRSCO and SEC standards. The UN Economic Commission for Europe (UN-ECE) has, since 1992, been developing its Framework Classification (UNFC) as a single global system for harmonising all existing national and international resource/reserve reporting systems, covering both government and industry requirements and both the hydrocarbon and solid minerals sectors. While few mining companies report their resources and reserves using the UNFC, the system is accepted or is being examined as a basis for reporting by some governments, including those of Russia, China and India. The UN-ECE agreed in 1999 to incorporate CRIRSCO definitions into the UNFC for those categories of resources and reserves used for market-related reporting, but a more recent edition of the UNFC removed or changed the definitions, requiring re-engagement by CRIRSCO to ensure compatibility. Since 2005, CRIRSCO and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) have been involved in discussions with the International Accounting Standards Board (IASB), which plans to develop a new Accounting Standard for the Extractive Industries as part of its International Financial Reporting Standards. At the request of the IASB, CRIRSCO and SPE have been examining any potential for convergence of resource/reserve definitions between the mining and hydrocarbon industries. Each of these systems is described in this paper and high level comparisons made.

From ancient times to the modern world, the mining industry has played a pivotal role in shaping the society that we live in today. It remains an integral part of everyday life and is a catalyst for both technological and economic growth. With finite resources on Earth, and growing pressures surrounding climate change and the environment, space mining opportunities have become of increasing interest. Recent discoveries have shown celestial bodies including the Moon and surrounding asteroids, contain an abundance of critical minerals, as well as resources necessary to sustain human life. These discoveries coupled with a transition into the digital and autonomous age, offer an innovative solution to solving some of the mining challenges currently being faced on Earth. Similarly, they also offer a pathway to enabling deep space exploration and off Earth exploratory missions. However, like with mining operations on Earth, space remains and immensely challenging and complex operational environment. The inhospitable nature of space poses new challenges, including communication barriers, lunar dust, cosmic radiation, and gravity. The challenges and risks are not just technological, as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors must also be considered to prevent unintended consequences and hazards. Furthermore, future workforce, law, financial, and security systems must evolve to enable space mining to take place. These are all known aspects to begin with, but as the complexity of the space grows it becomes apparent that a holistic approach to assess and manage these factors will be required.

Average annual growth in consumption of primary energy in Australia over the past 10 years has been 5·5 per cent compared to a world average of 4·1 per cent.Over the next 10 years growth rate is expected to increase to 6 per cent per annum due largely to the rapid development in the mineral processing industry.By the end of the 19705 natural gas is expected to supply more than 9 per cent of Australia's primary energy market. Coal will supply 40 per cent and petroleum products 47 per cent. Nuclear energy will make its appearance but will make only a small contribution in the period.Australia has adequate reserves of natural gas and coal to supply its needs in the 1970s and beyond. However the newly developed reserves of crude oil, while supplying 60-70 per cent of requirements in the initialyears, will need regular and sizable additions if they are to keep pace with the expanding consumption. For Australia to become self sufficient in the period 1970-1990 it is estimated that new discoveries will need to approximate ten times the volume of recoverable reserves found in Australia to date.

The Hemersley Ranges are located in the North West Division of Western Australia and extend, approximately, from latitudes 21¦ 30! to 23¦S and longitudes 117¦ to 120¦E. Their mean height above sea level is'. 2,000 feet, and they rise from 600 to 800 feet. above the gen- eral level of the tableland which extends south-east from the coastal town of Roebourne.. Mt. Bruce, the highest peak, is 4,024 feet above sea level. The ranges are intersected by numerous north-flowing streams, dry during the greater part of the year, which have carved deep gorges, and it is in these that the principal deposits of orocidolite outcrop. The presence -of the mineral was first recorded in 1917., but the deposits remained untouched until 1937 when reports of a strong market demand for-croeido lice resulted in considerable prospecting and mining activity, particularly in Yampire, Wittenoom and Daleis Gorges. . It was established also that the blue asbestos belt extended from Willi- Wolli Springs north-west to Millstream Station, i.e.,-over a.:length of 180 miles and a width of 20 to 30 miles. A number of attempts were made to develop aid treat the Yampire and Wittenoom'Gorge deposits from 1938 onwards, but, for a ,variety of reasons, none of these-proved successful. Current production,. is wholly by Australian Blue Asbestos Pty. Limited at Wittenoom Gorge. This company commenced operations at the Wittenoom Mine in 1946, with an output of 601.8 long tons of- fibre,. and later transferred tb the Colonial Mine about one mile to the north-west. Output has been increased steadily to an' average of 12,000 to 14.,000.. long tons; per annum over the past six years. Fatality prevention and zero harm are key focus areas for resource companies. However, they remain an ongoing challenge for high hazard industries, including the mining sector. As one example the latest International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Safety Performance Report shows that, while there is generally a declining fatality trend since the organisation commenced publishing data in 2012, there were still 33 fatalities across member companies in 2022 (ICMM, 2023b). Every fatal incident brings significant pain and suffering to the colleagues, friends and family of those involved, however the failures and causal factors leading to each incident are frequently very familiar to people working in the industry, particularly those tasked with managing risk and safety. In the words of Dame Judith Hackitt, Grenfell Tower Fire Investigator, ‘there are no new accidents – just different people making the same mistakes because they haven’t learned’ (Hackitt, 2022). The recurring themes in terms of the nature of fatal hazards and their associated causes across the mining sector show that, despite improvements evidenced by the favourable declining fatality trends over the long-term (in general and outside of catastrophic multiple fatality events), changes are required to achieve fatality elimination and the aspiration of zero harm. This extended abstract and the accompanying presentation apply a mining frame of reference to the idea that there are no new accidents, examining how this applies within the industry and why the lessons from past failures are not always well understood or applied to prevent the reoccurrence of material unwanted events. Many contemporary mining and resources organisations have extensive internal incident history data and a wide variety of information on fatality incidents is publicly available, including the annual ICMM Safety Performance Report. This extended abstract and the accompanying presentation explore how this existing data can be used effectively to learn from the past and proposes practical ideas regarding strategies for successful knowledge transfer to the workforce as a key component of preventing history repeating and improving safety performance across the industry. As noted by ICMM, ‘sharing lessons from failure is vital to improving health and safety, but it’s not enough’ (ICMM, 2023a).

The major coalfields of Australia are almost unique in the occurrence in some areas of CO partly or almost completely replacing CH4,t1e normal seam gas from metamorphism of coal due to time and depth of burial. This CO2 situation has some benefits but mostly it introduces particular safety problems result- ing from the high density of CO2 relative to air, magnifying problems of gas dilution in ventilation, and the greater affinity which coal has for CO2 than for CH4 increasing proneness to gas-dynamic phenomena. The occurrence of most CO2 seam gas can be directly related to igneous intrusion and to its associated pneumatolytic injections. Whilst intrusions locally increase the rank of coal by their contact metamorphic effect, normal coal metamorphism due to time and depth of burial continues after intrusion and injection together with the ongoing metamorph- ic production of CH . This new CH slowly displaces any CO to leave some present-day intruded coals with seam gas with reduced CO2 or even without any significant CO2 associat- ions. The seam gas maps of the Bowen and Sydney Basins and more detailed maps of specific areas exemplify these situations. Mining progress, plus more searching studies of igneous-coal relationships provide improved understanding of the factors involved.

Ore-bearing minerals that are located along microfractures are always susceptible to loss during the breakage and sampling of the material. Further losses occur with on-site sample preparation and splitting prior to laboratory analysis. In these cases solid whole rock channel or core samples should be handled with due care to ensure all fines and loose particles are collected and included in the sample for total chemical analysis.Similarly open hole and reverse circulation drill methods are not usable in areas containing old mine workings, heavily fractured ground or highly degraded/oxidised mineral assemblages. Nor are these methods usable to assess a bulk mineable target where the enriched zones were peripheral to or between old mine cavities.

Digitally enhanced Landsat MSS images are being used'in delineating the structural and tectonic features in the Arabian Shield as part of a project funded by King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) of Saudi Arabia. The delineated features together with statistical modeling and structural analysis are to assist in an improved understanding of the evolution and mineralization of the Arabian Shield. Specific emphasis is to be given to relating the extracted linear features to the location of known mineral occurrences and areas of potential geologic hazards. A number of textural (spatial) and spectral enhancement techniques have been applied, to the MSS data covering selected areas, in selecting the most optimal enhancement product for visually delineating the structural geologic .features.

In Australian collieries, solutions to the outburst problem must be implemented in a highly competitive environment which has a low tolerance on negative productivity effects. Solutions are only applicable if the overall viability of the operation remains sound. Minimum time must be spent on alleviation and control measures. This is favoured by simple geology, advanced warning and efficient alleviation and control procedures. Research requirements in support of this include 1. an improved means of predicting the nature and location of outburst zones ahead of the face and, 2. an improved means of measuring the effectiveness of gas drainage. For additional safety at the face, a means of continuously monitoring outburst proneness is required. In general, greater emphasis is required on improved instrumentation.
