Dynamic market and operating conditions, coupled with an environment in which multiple objectives and trade-offs are common, pose major challenges for planners and schedulers working in any mining entity. Many mining companies recognise the need to shift from a siloed mining-focused push model to an integrated value chain, demand-driven approach, but there are still fundamental barriers in business process and the supporting technology preventing a consideration of end-to-end optimality.This paper presents some elements of experiences working with companies to adopt such advanced approaches. In addition to algorithmic elements, an approach to phased and gradual deployment of progressively more sophisticated optimisation models is described. From a practical software adoption perspective, it is believed that this last concern is also of primary importance. Next generation approaches to the optimisation of complex bulk commodity demand chains, namely iron ore and coal are presented, with case studies in the world’s largest integrated operations in Western Australia and Queensland from the raw material mined through to market. Utilising accurate simulation models supported by metaheuristic optimisation techniques, a range of ways to engineer a dynamic decision support framework that can adapt and change with the inevitable changes in commodity markets is explored. Objectives such as total revenue, margin, cost, NPV, throughput, asset utilisation, contractual penalties and bonuses, and energy consumption can be managed simultaneously across the mine, plant, logistics network, port operation, shipping and sales domains.CITATION:Balzary, J and Mohais, A, 2014. The Western Australian Mining and Petroleum Research Institute (WAMPRI) was established in 1981 by the Western Australian Government as a funding and co-ordinating Institute to foster research into the mining and petroleum industry within this State. To June 1984, the Institute has sponsored 34 projects with a total notional value of $2.5 million and an actual cash commitment of $1.5 million. Strong support for WAMPRI has come from Industry with 60 companies contributing half the money needed for the research grants.The 34 WAMPRI projects funded so far cover all aspects of the mining and petroleum geosciences.Several WAMPRI projects are concerned with gold including processing technology and the development of exploration models and techniques, they are providing successful results.Although well supported by Industry there is a surprising lack of applications being submitted to the Institute in the area of mining engineering, where it is felt there is much scope for research projects.

BHP Diamonds and their joint-venture participants DiaMet Minerals, Chuck Fipke and Stewart Blusson are currently developing Canada's first commercial diamond mine in the arctic barren lands of the Northwest Territories (NWT) of Canada. The paper reviews the early history of the project leading up to the discovery of the first kimberlite pipe in September 1991, diamond exploration techniques and the subsequent advanced exploration and development work carried out at the site. In many aspects, this exploration work represented a development project in itself. Coinciding with the advanced exploration work, the project team prepared an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) and went through federal review of the project at the highest level. The 1100 orebody is a massive copper sul- phide orebody which contains a major portion of the Isa Mine copper ore reserves of 130 million tonnes at 3.2%. The underground mining of a deposit as large as the 1100 orebody is technologically a complex operation as extraction strategies have to be evaluated with reference to 1. rock mechanics considerations, 2. safety and environmental standards, 3. production and operating require- ments and 4. metal recovery and costs. The mining philosophy in the orebody has undergone considerable change over the past five years as a result of experience and improved technology. At this stage, primary stopes are extracted by high rise sublevel open stoping and pillars by slot and mass blast drawn either under rock fill or as an open Stope.

The microbial, microaerobic, biodegradation of cryptomelane-rich and pyrolusite-rich samples of manganese oxides was studied in repeated five-day static batch cultures over II weeks. Manganous ion was leached/reduced faster from the cryptomelane-rich samples (average 510 mg Mn2+/1/d) than from the pyrolusite samples (average 442 mg Mn2+/1/d).Cultures contained 20 per cent (w/vl) manganese mude, five per cent (w/v) molasses nutrient and the end-of-batch bacterial cell numbers were approximately 1010 cells/ml. The cryplomelane-rich sample incubates became more acid with time than the pyrolusite-rich incubates. The breakdown of pyrolusite proceeds in a relatively uniform way, while cryplomelane indicates a stepwise destabilisation.

A detailed, mine scale non-linear numerical model of Rosebery mine has been built for the purpose of simulating life-of-mine global deformations. The model was calibrated using observations of displacement and damage, and was then used to investigate the correlation between dissipated plastic energy (DPE) and seismic event occurrence. The study is unique because the seismic data was collected over a relatively short period using a temporary portable seismic system. It is the intent to undertake significantly more work, but the analysis of limited data shows that a very good, non-linear relation between DPE and event probability is present. The observed correlation is consistent with measurements from other mines where more data was available. With more data, the strength of the correlation will allow the DPE analysis to be used during the design and sequencing phase of planning to better design the mine to minimise seismic hazards.

Dry milling circuits that include high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR) or vertical roller mills (VRM) and air classification have replaced dry ball milling in cement production, but how do they compare to wet milling and classification circuits in mineral processing plants? Two case studies are presented that compare the energy efficiency, wear, liberation and capital cost of dry and wet milling circuits. In both case studies the VRM and HPGR consume half the energy of a wet tumbling mill for the same duty. However, the dry classification system tends to significantly erode the energy benefits. A number of improvement opportunities are presented that have the potential to improve the energy and capital efficiency of dry milling circuits. These improvement opportunities focus on the dry classification system that consumes significant energy in heating and fan power requirements and requires a large proportion of the footprint.

On the 17th November, 1964, a new No., 2 lead blast furnace was blown in at Port Pirie. The furnace departed from previous designs by incorporating a centrally located continuous tapper for both lead bullion and slag. The use of a central tapper permitted a simple and effective layout for the handling of both products. Considerable development was necessary to bring the furnace to its present level of efficiency. Units vital to the continu- ous operation were developed to allow quick replacement, thus ensuring high time efficiency under varied operating and maintenance conditions. The furnace was designed with the following objectives in mind, 1. increased crucible life, 2. elimination of oxygen for slag tapping, 3. higher temperature slag for fuming operations-, 4. less operator skill needed, 5. reduced tapping tool consumption, 6. elimination of settler skull and scrap lead, 7. better control of blast air distributi.nn. Conditions encountered at a recently completed brownfields mining project provided valuable insight into, and development of, techniques for working in and around known underground mining voids in an open cut environment. The careful application of underground blasting principles to a pit environment and successful excavation whilst maintaining appropriate stand-off distances were two primary areas of innovation enabling the success of the project.Mary Mac Hill is a gold deposit situated less than 2 km south-west of the town of Laverton, Western Australia. It is owned and mined by Crescent Gold Limited. Previous underground mining by various other mining companies has left an extensive network of underground horizontal development, subvertical stopes and shafts, some of which daylighted at surface. This was identified as potentially posing substantial risks, which would prevent the application of conventional mining methods. Two major stopes were located under a hard banded iron ridge topped by a peak of cap, connected variously by narrow drives and vertical development. Due to the proximity of the first of these stopes to the surface, its dimensions and governed by procedures and advice provided by externally engaged engineers, Crescent Gold could not access the area of the ridge immediately overlying the stope using conventional open cut mining methods. This was the first of many hurdles surmounted in mining this deposit.The following report outlines how the challenges this geometrically complex deposit presented. Solving these problems enabled the team to mine the contained gold ore to a completed design, without subjecting personnel or mining equipment to harm due to a void breach incident. This paper outlines the numerous complications and difficulties Mary Mac Hill posed and explains the strategies developed to overcome them. Engineering of gold treatment facilities complete with infrastruc- ture in a remote location such as Papua NewòGuinea present unique problems to the design team. Site location, topography, ground conditions and infrastructure are some of the major hurdles to overcome when setting out on the design of such plants. This paper discusses two such plants, located in two distinctly different areas of Papua New Guinea and the solutions evolved in order to design successful operating facilities.

In the last two decades, equipment used in the coal mining operations has become much more sophisticated. The way that work is organised and performed in the industry has also changed significantly. Changes in equipment specification or procedures inevitably means that the risk associated with that equipment or procedure also changes. In an attempt to address this the Joint Coal Board Occupational Health and Safety Trust (JCB) commissioned the University of New South Wales Mining Research Centre and Mine Site Technologies to perform a feasibility study into the development and deployment of Virtual Reality (VR) based training simulators in the New South Wales coal industry. The main aims of the study were to identify, the key providers of VR Technology, the VR options available to the JCB and the information that would need to be included in any simulator. It was anticipated that a critical assessment of these components would produce a format for a cost effective, state of the art simulator that could be readily accessed by all mines. The expectations of the feasibility study were that VR should offer three-dimensional (3D) simulations that are interactive, high-resolution models of real environments based on best practice Safety Management Plans. It was anticipated that the simulations would allow trainees to experience the consequences of poor decision-making and allow them to learn from their mistakes in a safe and forgiving environment. It was envisaged that such simulators would become an addition to the existing training methods used in the industry.

Total Development - in which he cited urban development, and intensive agriculture. 2. Partial development - in which he cited pastoral, and in this category would come National Parks. 3. Non development - in which category would fall the primitive or wilderness areas.

The Nagambie heap leach gold mine commenced production of gold in September, 1989. The mine,120km north of Melbourne in Victoria, Australia, was developed by Perseverance Mining Cor- poration Ltd, a junior Australian mining company, with no other operating mines. Gold production to December 31, 1990 was 47,621 oz. The mine is now producing at the rate of about 45,000 oz per year. As of February 28, 1991, resources at the mine are 5.1 million tonnes measured, at 0.65g/t Au while reserves were 1.65 million tonnes at 0.86g/t Au of proven, heap leach ore, plus 0.37 million tonnes at 0.40g/t Au, of dump leach ore. Metallurgical recoveries expected are 80 per cent for the heap ore and 60 per cent for the dump ore. Perseverance Mining Corporation was listed on the Australian Stock Exchange on April 2, 1987, after a capital raising in March that year. At this time the company's issued capital was 4 million ordinary 25ó shares, 3 million of which were issued to the public to raise $0.75 million.

At BHP Billiton Iron Ore Newman Joint Venture (NJV) ore is railed from four separate mine operations in the Newman area to Port Hedland, where the ore is screened, crushed and blended to produce lump and fines NJV products. Each mineÆs grade varies separately, so it is important that a centralised system is in place to control the overall blend and ensure that the products meet customer expectations. It is important that grade- related decisions are built into the normal production process and have minimal impact on production rates. A continuous stockpile management system (CSMS) covering the whole NJV production process is used to generate the daily crushing schedule, taking into account all currently available ore sources. Innovative additions to the CSMS provide more accurate information to support decision making by the mine schedulers; for example, blasthole estimates are continually adjusted for bias compared to crusher and port rake grades; lump-fines (L-F) grade split and beneficiation plant upgrade algorithms are updated on a continuous basis, and the dilution effect, which impacts on reported port rake grades, is removed.

It is quite well known, although not so well documented, that radio noise is generated during rock fracture. Radio noise has also been observed during severe earthquakes. The source has been thought to be the fracturing of the rock, although the mechanism has never been unequivocably proven. A study of these radio emissions may provide insight into rock dynamics prior to seismic events, and after blasting. A programme of electric-field recordings has been undertaken at Brisbane quarries during multi-hole blasting. Preliminary analysis has shown that three types of signal may be distinguished. They are hole detonation, rock fall and post blast relaxation signals. It is thought that information about the blast, and the fracture of the rock, may be ascertained from these Signals.

The Cadia Valley Operations currently hosts a large operational open pit, a large operational sublevel caving underground mine and two other underground projects at the study stage. This scenario creates an unusual situation for the evaluation and planning of a fifth major open pit project. The Cadia East Open Pit is a large gold-copper development located adjacent to the operational open pit and above one of the underground projects. A study team is conducting a comprehensive and robust analysis of the target orebody. Two key factors for this project include the existing and planned projects within the valley and the wide range of available mining methods. The aim for the study team is to present an optimal and practical case which suits the entire Cadia Valley Operation. A rigorous and robust analysis of the situation requires that each factor be properly evaluated. A modular system has been developed which allows the wide range of scenarios to be quickly and meaningfully considered. Sensitivities for each module drive the further development of that particular module. As each scenario progresses, an assessment is made evaluating its value, strategic value and practicality. In such a way, the number of scenarios is gradually reduced at each stage to produce a final short list of feasible cases. Each scenario on the shortlist is then assessed with regard to the existing operations and other projects. A qualitative and quantitative analysis is made. This ranking is used to provide the recommended case.

Contour banks and waterways are standard soil conservation measures to assist farmers reduce the impact of gully erosion on sloping cropping land by reducing the slope length to the interval between the banks. The Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) developed by the USA Department of Agriculture Soil Conservation Service in 1930s predicts the long-term average annual soil loss (A).The equation is the product of the rainfall erosivity factor (R), the soil erodibility factor (K), the topographic factors of slope length and angle (L and S) and the cropping management factors (C and P). Contour banks reduce the slope length (L) only.Contour banks are a constructed earth embankment, incorporating a channel on the upslope side, typically traversing a slope on or close to the contour to control and/or prevent the erosion of that slope. The banks are also referred to as graded banks, terraces, or bunds (DSITI 2015). Contour banks are either broad based or narrow based. Broad based banks allow the passage of the machinery over the banks whilst narrow based bank batters are too steep preventing the passage of machinery. Waterways are a stable, longitudinally sloping water disposal area of sufficient capacity used to discharge surplus runoff from the contour bank and to allow it to flow to a lower level without causing erosion (DSITI 2015).The mining industry must decide what the role for contour banks and waterways is in each operation’s rehabilitation and closure plan.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2018. The Hermit Islands are situated at 145¦ E 1 30'S in the Bismarck Sea approximately 200km WNW of Manus Island. They are dominated by basalt flows, one of which yielded a K/Ar isotopic date of 3.4 + 0.05Ma. All basalts examined were olivine-bearing, but one sample also contained hornblende. Although many outcrops were weathered, no evidence of pervasive hydrothermal alteration was observed on any islands and non-weathered rocks are petrographically fresh and many retain glass.

THE following description of the surface plant of the Great Fitzroy Mines is to be understood as having been compiled by a mechanical engineer, who concerns himself more with the various appliances used, their correct construction to enable them to accomplish their prescribed work, and the production and transmission of the power required to operate them, than with the reasons for the physical and chemical processes which those appliances are called upon to assist in carrying out. Hence the metallurgist will not find herein more than the skeleton of the organism, which perhaps he would wish to be clothed with the detailed description of the substances undergoing treatment, in their various combinations, at all stages, and the results attained in separating the valuable constituents from the worthless. So, also, no details will be found of the methods employed by the management for. the purpose of determining by sampling and assaying the nature of the various products obtained.GENERALThe ore being worked at the Great Fitzroy Mine is divided into two classes :-1. Ore that requires concentration before smelting.2. Ore that can be smelted direct.Flow-sheet (Fig. 1) shows in outline the process of treatment to which ore of the first class is subjected, and the writer will endeavour to fill in that outline with some details of the appliances used.

THE South Mine. owned by the Broken Hill South Limited, occupies mineral leases 7 and 8 on the Broken Hill lode. The ore reserves are 4,250,000 tons, and the ore hauled for the year ended June, 1930, was 387,000 tons, the total to date being 7,840,000.The mine, down to the 1070-ft. level, is naturally divided into two sections, the northern and southern ends. Ore extraction is practically completed in the northern end to this horizon, while the southern end is developed ready for a concentrated attack.Fig. 1 shows the state of the 8215-ft. level, after connection to the new shaft.The levels above and below to the 1070-ft. level are in a similar condition, while below the 1070-ft. level the stoping has been confined to the north end, but not completed. The south end on these levels is also partially developed.The ore at present is hauled up No. 1 shaft, which is centrally situated to the present workings. This shaft was put into use in 1909, and in 20 years has had approximately 5,000,000 tons of ore pulled through it.The company, having proved the existence of large ore-bodies in the southern end of the mine, decided to sink No. 7 shaft. This is a six-compartment frame-set shaft (see Fig. 2) equipped with two cages and two 5-ton skips, the remaining compartments being utilised for electric cables, pipes, and ladders. The surface arrangements will include a steel head frame, electric winders, and breaker station.
