Haul truck drivers are at a high risk of developing fatigue due to the monotonous nature of the work and demanding shift rosters. In the mining industry, fatigue is identified as a major contributing factor in several fatal accidents a year. A number of fatigue detection devices are now available, that can contribute to improved fatigue risk management in the mining industry. This paper describes the technology and algorithms behind one particular product which is both predictive and un-obtrusive to the operator. The Advisory System for Tired Drivers (ASTiD), was developed by Fatigue Management International (FMI) in collaboration with the Loughborough Sleep Research Centre (LSRC), both in the United Kingdom. While this system includes a model of the human circadian rhythm as a bias for predicting expected fatigue risk by time of day, it also uses yaw data generated by a solid-state gyroscope in the horizontal plane. Algorithms analyse this data to determine the level of monotony of actual driving conditions and to detect changes in steering control caused by driver fatigue. During normal levels of attention, a haul truck driver applies continuous, small adjustments to the steering wheel. As the level of fatigue increases, steering adjustments become less frequent and more erratic. Differentiating between these modes of control in the highly variable mining environment is accomplished by chromatic processing of the gyroscope data. This paper will go into some detail explaining the principles behind chromatic processing and the specific application of these in detecting fatigue in haul truck operators.Technology in itself is not the solution to addressing operator fatigue, but it plays an important role in ongoing monitoring and maintaining awareness with mining personnel. Furthermore, the specific principles behind ASTiD technology support a risk-based approach to fatigue management, allowing optimisation of the mining operation for productivity as well as safety.

In secondary steelmaking, calcium treatment is practised to modify the solid alumina or spinel inclusions into liquid or partially liquid calcium aluminates. It has been seen that the dissolved calcium reacts with sulfur or oxygen present in the steel to form CaS or CaO type of transient inclusions. Post-calcium treatment these transient inclusions further react with pre-existing alumina or spinel inclusions and modify them. In addition, direct modification of pre-existing inclusions is also reported in the literature. In the present study, laboratory-scale induction furnace-based experiments are carried out to melt electrolytic iron in an alumina crucible followed by deoxidation with aluminium. The CaS-based composite material, prepared in-house, is added after the aluminium deoxidation to study the stability of CaS at the steelmaking temperature. Multiple steel samples were also taken to track the dissociation of CaS by means of sulfur pick-up in steel. Additionally, inclusion analysis of these steel samples was also performed to track changes in the chemical composition of inclusions in response to CaS addition. It has been seen that the CaS dissociates leading to a gradual pick-up of sulfur in steel. The scanning electron microscope – energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM-EDS) analysis reveals that the alumina crucible and floated alumina inclusions are modified into calcium aluminates and the extent of modification depends on the contact time of CaS with the two sources of alumina mentioned earlier. However, the modification of alumina inclusions in the bulk steel did not occur during these experiments.

Four different major international copper projects are discussed. Three have recently come on line, and one is now being constructed. Each of the projects has encountered unique problems during the course of its development because of the legal requirements of the host country, together with its political and social needs. Nevertheless, there have been similar problems to solve. There were six common factors. 1. Quality engineering to be performed under the direction of an experienced project team. 2. Good communications. 3. Logistics. 4. Customs requirements. 5. Availability of capable construction labour. 6. Local material source capability.

The paper deals with the problem of managing the supplies of consumables (energy resources, lubricants, explosives, explosive supplies, tires, spare parts, etc) in mines. After the introductory remarks and comments, a general stochastic model of supply, relating in general to the dynamic programming method is presented. A selection of stochastic supply model for experiments and research by the authors of this paper is not a coincidence, based on of their long experience, showing that this type of model is the most suitable to provide support for decision-making and management of supplies of consumables in mines.In order for the problem?of?consumables?supply?management to be reviewed, in whole and objectively from the aspect of risk, experimental tests of the stochastic model in real conditions were performed at the limestone open pit mine æZelenikovecÆ near Skopje, the capital of Macedonia. The scope of the experimental research enabled reliable analysis. The results obtained confirm the efficiency and reliability of the stochastic model and two separate manipulative-operational positions regarding its application, which may have an important influence on the optimisation of supplies.

The multi-reversal direct shear test (MRDS) method is commonly used to measure the residual shear strength of soils. However, when the standard direct shear (DS) apparatus is used, the MRDS method is prone to two major sources of error: load cap tilting and specimen loss. These two sources of error can cause erratic behaviour in the residual shear strength curve, making it difficult or even impossible to determine the correct residual shear strength value of the specimen being tested. This paper presents the results of new modifications to the standard DS apparatus that prevent load cap tilting and specimen loss. Consolidated drained testing was performed on highly-over consolidated cohesive soil samples from a Latrobe Valley open pit mine, with results obtained from the modified DS apparatus showing a great improvement in the residual shear strength profile compared to those obtained using the standard apparatus. Large numbers of reversals (up to 14) conducted on a single specimen in the modified DS apparatus showed no notable load cap tilting and no specimen loss occurred. This paper reviews the various processes successfully in operation to treat refractory gold ores and describes in detail the alkaline pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Mercur Mine, Utah, U.S.A., on car- bonaceous/sulphide refractory ore and the acidic pressure oxidation circuit operating at the Barrick Goldstrike Mine, near Carlin, Nevada, U.S.A., on sulphide refractory ore. The autoclave process is important to Barrick for the extraction of gold. The Company has operated successfully a 750 ton per day unit at its Mercur property for the past two years and more recently has commissioned a 1500 ton per day unit at Goldstrike. The paper presents data relative to operating costs, materials of construc- tion for autoclaves and peripheral equipment, reagent requirements, and changes required during commissioning for both autoclave systems.

"*This is an abstract only*Construction of geological models for kimberlites has historically largely been based on visual volcanic textures and features, with chemical data only collected on an ad-hoc basis depending on the level of perceived complexity observed in the geological data. The focus of this paper is a high-level view of the impact an initial absence (or lack) of relevant chemical data had on two kimberlite resource models as well as how the magnitude of the problem increased once the resource estimation process commenced (Stiefenhofer, 2013). The impact of ignoring chemical data on a project assessment where micro-diamond estimation techniques are employed, is also discussed. Resource estimates based on micro-diamond data are critically dependent on the use of the correct geological model since stationarity of the size frequency distribution is key to the generation of correct grade estimates. A combination of high virgin rock temperatures, deep workings and extensive utilisation of heavy diesel equipment has presented North Mine (A Division of North Broken Hill Limited) with challenging ventilation problems. These problems have been addressed in a variety of ways which include in the order of 6000 kM of underground refrigeration. The future of North Mine depends on the successful development and extraction of ore in excess of 1100 m below the shaft collar using mechanised cut and fill mining. The success of this will depend on the installation of a complex chilled water reticulation circuit in this area. This will involve planning and constriction of a number of large dams, installation of pups and turbines, and the successful commissioning of several large water to air heat exchangers.

Exposure to respirable contaminants in mine atmospheres has long posed a serious hazard to miners. The control of these hazards, some of which can have sudden and catastrophic effects and some others, slow and long enduring consequences, has been a major concern for labor, management and government alike. This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health rleterinratinn_

This study considers realistic data for a planned open pit iron ore mine, but is applicable to any open pit situation. By interpolating drill hole data, grades are generated for a rectangular block model. Each blockÆs grade designation vector has components for each analyte (chemical element or compound) influencing ore value. Interpolation by means of geostatistical kriging leads to each block being assigned its expected value, and thus underestimates the overall grade variability. Alternatively, interpolation by means of conditional simulation is a method that implements random sampling from an infinite population of solutions. Each conditional simulation has appropriate overall grade variability, but estimating any blockÆs mean and variance requires sampling from multiple conditional simulations. For a block model, an ore/waste selection criterion maximises the expected tonnage at a target grade. This criterion is a linear composite of the grade components, with positive coefficients for the beneficial analyte (iron) and negative coefficients for the deleterious analytes (such as silica, alumina and phosphorus).Although conditional simulation gives the same expected grade as kriging for each block, the expected maximum tonnage of ore selectable at a target grade may differ from that obtainable from the kriged solution. We apply the linear composite selection criterion to each of 25 conditional simulations, as well as to the kriged block model. The resulting distribution of product tonnage is confirmed to have an expected tonnage that is over 20 per cent greater than that of the kriged model. The method also enables a selection probability to be computed for each block, and thus a probabilistic pit boundary distribution to be identified and used in mine planning. Proposed extensions will consider risk-based scheduling of the multiple selection solutions through minimisation of a derived æstress factorÆ and treating the mining process as an iterative system with actual or artificial ædepletionsÆ modelled in line with the mine plan, using the updated state (with new information) to re-evaluate the mine plan for subsequent periods.CITATION:Everett, J E and Grobler, F, 2013. The Islamic Republic of Mauritania is a large country of over 1 000 000 square kilometres situated on the Atlantic coast of north-west Africa. It is bounded to the north by Western Sahara and Algeria, to the east by Mali, and to the south by Mali and Senegal. With the exception of a narrow strip in the south along the Senegal River valley, the country lies entirely within the Sahara. The north of the country is largely devoid of vegetation, and it is estimated that 90 per cent of the population of 2.1 million people live in the southern quarter of the country. From about the turn of the century, Mauritania was ruled by the French from Dakar in Senegal and, until 1960 when it obtained independence from the French, Mauritania did not have a capital. Today, the capital is Nouakchott, home to an estimated 600 000 Moors of mixed Arab, Berber and African descent. After independence in 1960, disputes over Spanish Sahara to the north led to a military coup in 1978 and it was not until 1991 that a democratic constitution was adopted. The new constitution declares Mauritania to be an `Islamic, African, and Arab Republic.' It provides for an executive president, elected for a six-year term, and for a bicameral legislature, consisting of a national assembly and a senate. The first presidential and legislative elections were held in 1992 under United Nations' supervision. Mauritania's economy is predominantly pastoral, and the country depends heavily on foreign aid. Its principal export industries are iron ore mining (about ten million tonnes per annum from mines near Fderik in the north) and fishing. Mines d'Or d'Akjoujt SA (MORAK), a company in which General Gold Resources NL (GGR) has 42.5 per cent equity, produces over 50 000 ounces of gold per annum, which represents the third largest export industry in the country.

This paper reports the advances made during the development of underground mine fill technology from circa 1960 to the present and, in particular, indicates where increased input from process plant metallurgists û mainly milling, but also smelting û can contribute to further advances. Fill types pertinent to the discussion are partially deslimed, partially dewatered mill tailings fill (uncemented, cemented) and paste fill. Pertinent process plant includes hydrocyclones, thickeners, filters, elutriation tanks, holding tanks, mixing mills, pumps and pipes. Control instrumentation is a critical component of each of the process plant units. The impact of smelter practice on filling is not considered in this paper, except to note that some smelter slags are, or have the potential to be, active pozzolans and when ground to the specific surface area of Portland cement can act as partial Portland cement replacements, a factor of economic and operating significance when Portland cement supply lines are considerable and/or tenuous. The important role of process plant metallurgists has long been recognised, with Thomas, Nantel and Notley (1979) including them as one of the many categories of professionals with contributions to make. With the ever increasing sophistication of mine fill practice and its ever increasing acceptance as an essential component of the mining/ milling/waste disposal process, the scope for contributions by the modern breed of highly educated, specifically trained process plant metallurgists is becoming ever increasingly obvious.

The Emmaville district is located in the northern part of the New England region of New South Wales some 400 miles north of Sypney. Better known for its substantial production of tin and tungsten ores, the Emmaville district has also been the centre of a small and somewhat sporadic production of copper, arsenic, silver, lead and zinc. This production has come principally from three mines-Webb's Silver Mine, Webb's Consols and, to a lesser extent, Pye's Creek Silver Mine.The ores from these mixed sulphide deposits are texturally and mineralogically complex and the problems of beneficiation are rather formidable.GENERAL GEOLOGYThe main rock type of the Emmanville district is a dark, brown to blackish massive siltstone of Permian age which overlies acid volcanics possibly also of Permian age. In places the siltstone gives way to conglomerates and standstones with discontinuous lenses of calcareous sediments (David, 1887).The whole series is folded but because of the massive character of the more expansive siltstone, detailed structure is difficult to delineate.Toward the close of Permian time the area was intruded by a series of intermediate to acid plutonic and hypabyssal rocks. Below-ground technical complexity remains a traditional source of project challenge. Above-ground challenges then augment this complexity, including in the domain of commodity marketing. All challenges must be solved to produce quality, saleable, ex-mine product. The situation is further complicated in that technical complexities are not independent of each other, so complexity is best regarded as a system rather than a series of isolated factors. Additional above-ground challenges to mining projects are also increasingly sourced from societal and environmental factors, locally and globally. These challenges not only confer project complexity, but have their source in larger, global wicked problems. Finally, financing and resourcing of projects represents an ever-present challenge for all but the highest-quality mineral deposits. Rock masses when subjected to uniaxial or triaxial cyclic loading (eg in hydraulic running tunnels, during retrieval and injection of oil and gas from storage underground caverns and haulage roads), the material has a tendency to fail in fatigue. In order to design safe and reliable underground structures, the determination of brittleness under such loading conditions becomes a pre-requisite. Brittleness influences strongly the failure process and makes the rock mass behaviour complex under different tunnelling and mining activities. Brittleness Index is a term to quantify the brittleness feature of a specimen. In the present study, an attempt has been made to quantify the brittleness of jointed specimens using different brittleness criteria. The joints of the model jointed specimens were oriented at an angle of θ=15° normal to the loading direction, each having three different JRC’s=2–4, 12–14 and 14–16. The specimens were tested under triaxial conditions in incremental complete cyclic test scheme performed at displacement-controlled mode. Different brittleness criteria were used ie stress-strain dependent brittleness index, Young Modulus approach and energy-balance based mechanism. It was observed that energy-balance based mechanism which consider the post failure behaviour is more descriptive to reflect the whole variation of brittleness from sheer brittleness to ductility.

A full-length paper was not prepared for this presentation.The Halasu porphyry copper belt, located in the East Junggar basin bounded by Chinese Altay to the north and the Tianshan mountains to the south in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt, is one of the major porphyry copper belts in Xinjiang province, north-west China. Combined with previous studies in this area, the magmatism can be divided into three periods: pre-mineralisation activity of 390 Ma syn-mineralisation activity of 380–370 Ma post-mineralisation activity of 360–330 Ma.Through the comparison of zircon chemistry from ore-bearing and barren syn-mineralisation intrusions, negative correlation was identified between Ti-in-zircon temperatures and oxygen fugacity, corresponding to the fact that late-stage syn-mineralisation granitoids contain high water content, high oxygen fugacity and low temperatures with higher mineralisation potential. In addition, the relative low initial 87Sr/86Sr ratios, high eHf(t) and eNd(t) values and mantle Pb isotope characteristics in this study support that the magma forming these intrusions was probably derived from juvenile crust generated during subduction-accretionary processes.CITATION:Wu, C and Chen, H, 2015. The paper describes the preparation of new rail guides, removing existing rails, and replacing with new rails in a vertical winding shaft.INTRODUCTIONThe general practice in coal winding shafts is the use of two cages, with one or more decks in which men and materials are raised or lowered. Winding speeds vary according to depth, the type of winding gear, and whether winding is done in downcast or upcast shafts. Each cage occupies a position between the centre and side of the shaft, with a clearance depending on the type of guides used. The function of the guides is to keep the cage in position throughout the entire depth of the shaft. There are three types of guides, two of which are in general use.1. Selected wood of about 6 in. square section, fixed to the side of buntons.2. Solid strand steel made up similarly to that of an ordinary wire rope, suspended from the head frame with weights attached to the lower end.3. Standard T-rail sections fixed to end or side buntons. Of the three types, 2 and 3 are in general use. Two characteristics of the modern mining industry are that there is a skill shortage and that young professional people rise rapidly into highly responsible supervisory positions. With this responsibility comes the burden of identifying and managing health and safety risks. Without the benefit of a comprehensive health and safety training program, these young professionals may be putting both themselves and those under their supervision at risk. The Moura Mine explosions and the asbestos health disaster should not be just artifacts of history, but highly valued lessons that impress the need for comprehensive health and safety risk management strategies on young professionals. From the perspective of the former secretary of the Committee to implement the findings of the Moura (Disaster) Inquiry and as the former coordinator of the Coal Workers Health Scheme, key issues in occupational health and safety management systems are explored.

As demand for optimisation of mining processes increases, more attention is drawn to blast performance and fragmentation improvement. Fractures and discontinuities are among the most influential factors in blast results, therefore one of the initial steps towards blast optimisation is to gather information about the rock mass and integrate it in blast design. This paper presents a method for assessment of rock mass discontinuities and integrating it in production blasts in the Aitik open pit copper mine in Sweden.3D photogrammetric techniques were utilised to map discontinuities and distinguish domains of similar geologic structures in the pit. As a pilot study for a future campaign, four different initiation directions were tested through six pilot blasts in one of the domains. The results were compared in terms of swell and loading efficiency of rope shovels to identify the correlation between blast performance and initiation direction compared to major discontinuity families.It was established that in the trial domain, blasts initiated towards north or north-west yielded larger swell and better performance of loading. Comparing these blasts with discontinuity families show that there is a correlation between blast performance and initiation direction according to the dip and strike of these discontinuities.
