Calcination of samples from the Savage River region of Thsmania containing varying magnesite/dolomite ratios under conditions optimized for the magnesite component, followed by carbonic acid leaching at elevated pressures, leads to leachates of varying composition. For a 3 per cent solids slurry leached at 15.5°C and 700 k Pa carbon dioxide, the leachates have magnesium concentrations in the range 0.71 - 13.2 g/litre. The corresponding magnesium extraction data are 12.5 - 86.4 per cent. The variation in leachate composition would be unacceptable in terms of continuous processing, so that a feed of "constant" composition is essential. Selective mining and physical beneficiation to remove the bulk of the dolomite do not appear to be practical. It is concluded that the most appropriate method of feed preparation is to carry out extensive blending of the magnesite/dolomite ore and the resultant calcine.

The Broken Hill orebody ,occurs in the Willyama Complex, a block of Precambrian rocks which have been strongly folded and metamorphosed at moderate to high grade. Although -the origin of the silver-lead-zinc mineralization remains obscure, recent investigations have substantiated the view that the orebody has undergone concomitant high grade metamorphism with the enclosing wallrocks. The mesoscopic structures produced by this metamorphism are described, and the possible processes Telating to their formation are disoussed.In the high grade ore, metamorphic structures which can be recognized are foliation and lineation, wallrock fragments, layering, flow folds, ore breccias, and sulphide bearing veins. These structures can be related to processes involving plastic flow and fluid phase transport of the mineral assemblage. 'In areas of low grade mineralization adjacent to high grade ore, the structures more closely resemble those produced in -the wallrocks-foliatlon, lineation, layering, folds, and sulphide injections. Within areas of high grade ore, lenses and pods of manganese silicates Probably represent original inhomogeneities in the ore, i.e., portions of manganese-rich and sulphide deficient rock which have been metamorphosed to manganese silicates.From the structures displayed, a sequence of events has been established for the plastic flow of ore during deformation.

Microaerobic biodegradation oflow-grade manganese dioxide slurry tailings was demonstrated in enrichment cultures treated with dilute molasses at 30°C and pH 5·8. Supplementary nitrogenous nutrients, yeast extract addition and pH adjustment were not required.Continuously stirred, air-limited reactors were superior to still intermittently agitated cultures, in that, at 5 per cent (w/v) MnOz tailings and 5 per cent (w/v) molasses, the yield of 0.12 g Mn++/g molasses, the rate ofleaching of 1·06 g Mn++/l/d and a recovery of Mn++ of 58 percent from MnOz were 2·8 times, 1·7 times and 1·9 times greater, respectively. The best compromise in yield (0·45 g Mn++/g molasses) and rate ofdissolution (0·73 gMn++/l/d) was at 1 per cent (w/v) molasses in a stirred reactor.Where leaching organisms were separated from sterile ore by a bacteria impermeable membrane leaching was shown to be some 20 per cent due to diffusible metabolites and 80 per cent due to a direct contact between the bacteria and the ore particle's surfaces.

A process was developed, on a laboratory scale, for the removal of iron oxides from Weipa pisolitic bauxite. The technique involves the chemical reduction ofthe iron oxides by carbon, followed by selective removal of the iron species by acid leaching or chlorination.To remove more than 90 per cent of the iron it is necessary to reduce the iron oxides substantially to iron metal by heating the bauxite, pre-calcined at 650-800°C, with reactive carbon at 1040-1100°C. Reduction proceeds via the intermediate formation of hercynite (FeO.Al2O3) and difficulties have been encountered in reducing hercynite formed under less favourable reduction conditions.Following reduction, efficient selective removal of iron species is readily effected by acid leaching using dilute hydrochloric acid at 100°C, or chlorination at 500-750°C using Cl2, Cl2/N2, or Cl2/N2/CO mixtures.After removal of unreacted carbon, the final products contain 0·5-1.0 per cent Fe203 and 87-92 per cent Al203.

At an early stage of the examination of most prospects, samples are taken; and the sample values obtained play an important part in determining the subsequent history of the prospect. It is, therefore, important that. eveJJy effort should be made to interpret asfully as possible the meaning of the observed results. In this connection, it is suggested that examination of the assay values of mine samples by simple statistical methods may bring to light information of considerable value, which might otherwise be missed.Although expert statisticians may derive more information from the available data, those who are, like the writer, less proficient mathematically, may also benefit by applying quite simple statistical methods. At least they will develop a useful habit of thought bywhich they become aware at all times that sampling results only provide estimates of the truth, but that an assessment of the precision of such results may be possible. The object of this paper is to provide some evidence of. the truth of these statements, by theuse of a few very elementary statistical calculations.General.The idea that any mine sample is subject to error from a variety of causes is a very familiar one. Doubt always exists with regard to the representativeness of a perfectly cut sample, and other errors may arise through imperfections of sample cutting, crushing, splitting and assaying. Some causes of error may give rise to "constant" errors, others may cause variable but one-sided "systematic" errors, and others again may bring about variable results without any tendency toward bias on the average. In statistical language, mine sample values are subject to errors which may have either assignable causes or chance causes. The former are those which can be isolated, or should be capable of isolation, while the latter are those remaining when all assignable causes have been removed. A single constant assignable cause brings about bias in all results, and one or more than one variable assignable cause brings about variation between individual results and perhaps an overall bias. The system of chance causes that would remain if all assignable causes were removed would cause variation between individual results but no overall bias. Six years ago it was my responsibility to give the presidential address, and now that privilege has come my way again. On that occasion we were gathered atWhyalla and I took the opportunity of putting before members some observations on the problems we then faced in Australia, and some gains we had been able to chalk up during those early postwar years. You may recall that we were then just beginning to emerge from the difficulties of postwar reconstructions - of fuel and power shortages, and a grossly inadequate manpower for the tasks facing us. The expansion of manufacturing industry in Australia greatly stimulated by wartime activities, and by the postwar developments of many institutions - ran ahead of the supporting services and of the supply of labour to do thejobs. For many industries this unfortunate state of affairs had meant operating at rates well below their installed capacities and therefore levels of output insufficient for Australia's rapidly growing needs. When I last spoke to you these problems were still with us, though their intensity was beginning to lessen as a result of vigorous efforts by industry and governments to reduce them. But I must confess that my thoughts on that occasion were full of those problems and of the effect they were having on the iron and steel industry of this country-of the coal shortage, the labour shortage, and the many other difficulties we were then faced with - and all at a time when the stepping up of our postwar expansion programme was of vital concern to all of us.What a different picture it is six years later! Same-batch and non-blind as well as blind pulp duplicates are often submitted as quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) control samples to a routine laboratory along with routine assays (and other control samples such as reference material samples). The current ways of interpreting the results of duplicate assays to derive QA/QC conclusions and decisions, however, has not yet been formalised in a scientific manner. The current, prevailing approach and its limitations are reviewed and a new method is proposed as a substitute tool. This new tool should allow for operational error detection on a batch per batch basis (ie batch rejection) as well as laboratory performance assessment with time on reproducibility.

The epithermal Au-Ag deposits of the Hauraki Goldfield have formed in the convergent plate margin setting of the Coromandel Volcanic Zone (CVZ). The deposits form as siliceous lodes in the upper parts of geothermal systems associated with andesitic and rhyolitic volcanism. Two types of low sulphidation epithermal mineralisation are recognised in these volcanic terranes. Vein deposits within the rhyolitic terrane in the east and south of the CVZ (Whitianga Province) are typified by Chalcedonic Silica-Adularia-Illite type mineralisation. The veins are hosted by both rhyolite-dacite volcanic rocks and the underlying andesitic basement. The mineralisation formed by episodic violent decompressional boiling of deeply circulating meteoric water, with some magmatic fluid contribution; this boiling was associated with hydraulic fracturing and hydrothermal eruptions in geothermal systems where the piezometric surface of the deep geothermal reservoir lay near-surface. Such episodic boiling provides chalcedonic veining, banding and brecciation textures, adularia stability, bladed calcite, and extreme loss of H2S gas from the fluid to cause major gold deposition.   Crystalline Quartz-Illite-(Adularia-Kaolinite) type mineralisation is widespread in the andesitic terrane forming the northern and western portions of the CVZ (Kuaotunu Province). There is a spatial association with weak mineralisation of the high sulphidation (Vuggy Silica-Alunite-Kaolinite-Illite) epithermal type and porphyry eu-Au type. Crystalline Quartz mineralisation is probably formed by the mixing of shallow acidic groundwaters with the ascending deep geothermal fluid in geothermal systems beneath andesitic stratovolcanoes. The piezometric surface to the deep geothermal reservoir in these systems is likely to lie at considerable depth, with acidic gases rising from the geothermal reservoir condensing within the overlying vadose zone. The cooling effect, oxidation and pH decrease accompanying mixing apparently overcomes the dilution effect, and results in quartz deposition, illite (and locally kaolinite) alteration, and precipitation of gold. A high level of base-metal sulphide precipitation also enhances gold deposition. Violent boiling of the mixing fluids may occur at local structural dilation sites, producing high grade "bonanza" gold mineralisation.

A key driver to the success of a tunnelling project (the project) is the management of hydrogeological risk. The hydrogeological risk, if not managed, may cause significant impacts on the overall performance of the project. Impacts may include groundwater quality impairment due to contaminant transport and acid drainage from disturbed geology to groundwater, and groundwater lowering. The groundwater lowering and quality impairment may cause tunnel failure, with consequences such as injury to humans, as well as reduced property and environmental values, potentially costing millions of dollars to sponsors of the project. Depending on the nature of the contaminants and level of hydraulic connection of bedrock fracture along the length of tunnel, the contaminant transport may reduce structural strength of the tunnel due to corrosive action of contaminants such as acid drainage. The groundwater lowering can lead to varying degrees of ground settlement, posing threat of tunnel collapse. The management of hydrogeological risk includes:detection of potential pathways for contaminants into and around the tunnel,identification of factors responsible for the lowering of groundwater, and development of strategic measures to control groundwater lowering and contaminant transport. The paper presents an in-house hydrogeological risk management model named Vedanta-THRM (tunnel hydrogeological risk management). The model uses Risk Management Standard AS/NZS 4360:2004 (Standards Australia, 2004), Pressure State Response framework developed by Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development, and Interaction Matrices. The Vedanta-THRM identifies important characteristics, processes and events of potential hydrogeological risk and develops control measures for managing hydrogeological risk throughout the life cycle of the project. The Vedanta-THRM was applied for a project in the early stages of planning and found to be useful in assessing, evaluating and reducing the hydrogeological risk in a managed approach that potentially increased the performance of the project. The application results also provided management options for use by project sponsors and insurance industry, which included tunnel risk financing options and options for equity investors to choose among various returns under different tunnel credit ratings.

The effectiveness of shear-flocculation as a method for upgrading simple mixtures of ultrafine (1-11 \lm) scheelite and garnet was evaluated. Statistical methods were used in the design and analysis of the main test program.The stirrer speed, stirring time, and initial weight ratio were all found to have significant effects on both the recovery and grade of the floes produced. The particle sizes also had an effect on the final grade. There were several important interactions between factors which also affected the results. Optimum conditions for shear-flocculation were established, and under these conditions about 80 per cent of the scheelite could be recovered at a grade which depended on the composition of the starting mixture. Starting with mixtures containing 10 and 50 per cent scheelite, the best final grades were between 20 and 50 per cent and between 70 and 90 per cent respectively, the actual value depending on the particular combination of particle sizes.

Techniques have been developed for the dissolution of a wide range of rocks and minerals by a sodium peroxide sinter process. A olarge number of elements are determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy, and other elements such as arsenic and sulphur are determined by chemical analytical methods. The methods adopted to overcome inter-element and ionization effects on the atomic absorption results are discussed.

Operating experience with the pilot Lurgi carbonization plant at Morwell showed that under conventional operating conditions, although the thermal efficiency of the plant was very' high, the physical quality of the char produced was extremely poor. By variation of operating conditions to produce the slow drying rate developed by the laboratory research at the University of Melbourne, an improvement in the size of the char was achieved. A similar approach in the carbonization stage where severe breakage of the briquettes still occurred was not possible due to insufficient control over the heating in this stage. Theoretical analysis of the heat exchange process has shown that severe heating of the briquettes entering the carbonizer is a characteristic of the Lurgi system and cannot be controlled by modified operation. The plant has been closed down for reconstruction of the heating system to enable it to be used to produce hard char.INTRODUCTIONAn experimental carbonization plant was operated at the Morwell Works of the 'Gas and Fuel Corporation from November 1958 until July 1959. This plant was built as a pilot plant by the Corporation to designs supplied by the Lurgi Gesellschaft fur Warmetechnik and had the nominal capacity to carbonize 25 tons of brown coal briquettes and to produce 11 tons of char per day. The briquettes were supplied from the· normal production of the Yallourn briquette factory and the 2t in. The mining industry in Australia frequently uses the services of specialist engineering and managing contractors and consultants for a majority of the work required for project development, from feasibility studies to project commissioning. The project owner's prime objectives are to achieve predictability and competitive advantage for their project. As the majority of this work will be carried out by contractors, the effective evaluation, selection and management of these contractors in the most appropriate forms of contracts is an essential ingredient to project success. The first stage to project development should be for the owner to examine its own resources to establish the role that it will fill and thereby identify the role and scope of contractors' involvement. Once the owner has developed this work plan, the selection of contractors and consultants should be structured to ensure that the owner acquires the appropriate expertise and experience to achieve its project objectives. The sequence of selection procedures is: 1. Pre-qualification of prospective contractors according to the owner's adopted criteria, through the use of a pre-qualification questionnaire. 2. Evaluation by the owner tender board according to predetermined mandatory criteria. 3. Preparation of tender documents for submission to qualified contractors. 4. Evaluation of tender submissions by the owner tender board using a pre-determined, weighted matrix of technical and commercial criteria. 5. Final selection and contract negotiation.

The Aberfoyle Tin Mine lies on a wide sloping bench about 2,000-2,500 ft. above sea level, at Rossarden, 14 miles north of Avoca, in north-eastern Tasmania. The quartz-cassiterite veins were discovered in 1916, but mining did not begin until 1926. Trenching revealed seven small tin-bearing veins within a width of 57 ft. of Palaeozoic slates and sandstones, and it was assumed that the mineralization extended beneath the adjacent cover of Permian strata, but the presence of the main vein system (the 26 Vein System) was not suspected until the Aberfoyle Fault was discovered late in 1928.The mine has now been developed on thirteen levels, to a depth of 1,350 ft. The lower limit of economic mineralization appears to lie at about the ll-level, which is 1,060 ft. vertically below the concealed outcrop of the main veins. The Tolukuma gold-silver prospect is located approximately 100km N of Port Moresby in the Central Province of Papua New Guinea (PNG). Epithermal "adularia-sericite" style mineralisation crops out over 1200m within an en echelon quartz veined zone 1 to lOm wide. At a 4g/t cut-off grade, a geological resource of approximately 1.47Mt @ 13.77g/t Au is indicated from 38 diamond drill holes completed since discovery by Newmont Pty Ltd in September 1986. At a regional scale, Tolukuma miner- alisation appears localised in a dilatant zone at the intersection of a 1150 magnetic structure, and the western margin of a N-S trending graben which is filled by a Pliocene volcanic complex contemporaneous with the Mt Davidson Volcanics 30km to the W. A l0km diameter circular Landsat feature, which may reflect magma emplacement at depth, occurs immediately N of Tolukuma and nearby mineralisation. Mineralisation at Tolukuma occurs in sub-vertical quartz veins at, or adjacent to the faulted contact between Pliocene basic and intermediate volcanics/intrusives, and quartz mica schists and phyllites of the Cretaceous Kagi Metamorphics. Most veins display evidence of multiple episodes of brecciation and textures indicative of cyclic boiling, including crustiform rhythmic banding and quartz pseudomorphs after platy calcite.

Thiobacillus ferrooxidans was shown to catalyse biodegradation of chalcopyrite concentrates. The process was growth associated at normal temperatures (30°C) in dilute acid solution (pH2, H2SO4) in submerged cultures. Approximately 20% of the copper dissolved in 22 days in the presence of T ferrooxidans while less than 0.6% was released when bacteria were absent. In ore column leachates, the iron and sulphur oxidizing species T ferrooxidans, ranged from I04 to I06 cells/ml while exdusively sulphur oxidizing species ranged from I02 to 104 cells/ml. T ferrooxidans predominated below pH 3 while other sulphur oxidizing bacteria favoured higher pH. Organisms were distributed vertically in ore columns according to pH differences, resulting from gradual acid consumption by gangue, during trickle irrigation.There was a sequential development of bacteria in leachates from fresh ore irrigated with water only. High pH sulphur oxidizers were always present, low pH sulphur oxidizers appeared within a week while T ferrooxidans took 50 days to show up. Routine monitoring of bacteria in dump leachates provided a qualitative indication of events in otherwise inaccessible ore bodies.

Kanowna Belle Gold Mine is a deep, high-stress, sublevel open stoping mine located near Kalgoorlie. Seismic activity during the development cycle presented problems, including concerns regarding the exposure of personnel. A number of seismic management systems were developed and tested to monitor seismicity and control the risk. It was recognised that a dynamically capable reinforcement and support system was required to be installed as part of the development cycle to reduce the risk of exposure of the underground workforce to uncontrolled movement of rock. The performance of a new Garford Dynamically capable bolt was measured in tests performed by the Western Australian School of Mines (WASM) at their Kalgoorlie Dynamic Test Facility. Detailed descriptions of the facility and data processing were reported by Player, Villaescusa and Thompson (2004) and Thompson, Villaescusa and Player (2004). The development of the Garford Dynamic bolt is described and dynamic testing results are presented and evaluated. This bolt was implemented in the mining cycle following the testing program; the observed performance is described and assessed in this paper.
