Base metal sulfides at the Currawong volcanic-hosted massive sulfide deposit in the Lachlan fold belt of Victoria, south-east Australia, were formed in the late Silurian, but D2 deformation of the deposit in the Devonian Bindian orogeny was responsible for structural repetition that created the resource. The primary sulfide lenses were stacked by reverse-sense shear zones within a volcano-sedimentary sequence dominated by dacitic intrusions and turbidites. Shear zones were localised along lithological contacts, including the margins of the sulfide lenses. The competent dacitic intrusions did not fold during D2; folding was restricted to the packages of metasedimentary rocks. Overturning occurs within, but not between, the metasedimentary packages. The overall geometry of the deposit is that of a duplex, but the detailed shape does not conform to idealised duplex types, probably because of post-D2 deformation. A significant complicating factor for understanding the deposit, and for resource evaluation, is the dramatic variation in deposit geometry along strike, which may also be due to post-D2 deformation. The present day configuration of the deposit results from constructive thrust repetition of what may have been a single ore lens and destructive along-strike disruption controlled by rheology.CITATION:Blenkinsop, T G, Macklin, D and Hammond, R, 2015. With the advent of the resources boom in the late-1960s most of the larger scale resources projects in Australasia were commissioned on an æowner miningÆ basis, where the mine owners owned and operated the primary mining equipment. Then, in the 1980s with the arrival of the gold mining boom in Western Australia and elsewhere, a change occurred û most of the mining activities were carried out on a contract mining basis. Over recent years, however, there has been a marked trend amongst larger Australasian open pit mining operations back towards owner-controlled and operated mining operations. The reasons for this are many and are addressed in the paper, but centre on the concept of the owner being prepared to assume more of the mining risk in exchange for the advantage of not having to pay a contractorÆs profit margin. Where mining contracts are entered into, the older æschedule of ratesÆ format is being replaced with less adversarial and more entrepreneurial contract alternatives involving operating cost and risk sharing in a spirit of æfair dealingÆ. Leasing and maintenance issues have also been influenced in recent years by the advent of more flexible contract arrangements with equipment suppliers. Group purchasing has also had some influence for project operators. For many mine owners, the optimal risk management profile involves a practical offsetting of the assumption of mining risk on the one hand, against the removal of litigation risk and potentially reduced operating costs on the other. Potential pitfalls may arise where equipment size and type requirements vary with time or where manpower management, mining flexibility, job skills or safety exposure factors are relevant. These issues are commented on in the context of some well known examples, and an update is provided on contract mining versus owner operation in large-scale Australasian open pit mining generally.

Inspection of ropes.GENERALWire rope, which was invented for, and first applied to mine winding, has become an indispensable aUXiliary throughout the whole field of mining, be it for underground, open cut, or dredge work, as well as the requirements of transport and treatment of ores.Though wire ropes appear simple collections of wire and fibre, the demands made upon them are many, and the stresses and abuses to which they are exposed in service are varying, and often of serious dimensions.The exposition of these stresses and abuses, particularly dynamic stressing, corrosion, etc., all of which seriously affect the safety and economical life of the ropes, is often enough to frighten most practising mine staffs, who are aware that before the requirements of economic operation stands the still more important question of safety in mining.

Australia is a leading producer of mineral sands and according to U.S. Bureau of Mines, produced 24, 53 and 64% of world's production of ilmenite, rutile and zircon respectively in 1983. The industry which is mainly export oriented earned in export income about $210 million in 1985. The dominant position which Australia occupies in world produc- tion of mineral sands is also maintained in many areas of research and development work on the processing and application of these minerals. Some of this research which is leading the world has been responsible for setting up industries to produce value-added and high-tech products such as synthetic rutile and partially stabilized zirconia (PSZ). The production of high purity zirconia is due to commence shortly while research in rare earths offers an exciting prospect for future Developments.

Health and safety are the first priority for Australian minerals sector. Australia has a global reputation in the mining industry. However, accidents occur every year. Legislation and regulation are important to prevent the accident from occurring, so do the new technologies. It is sad to witness the collision incident persisting and the long called collision avoidance system (CAS) is still not widely used in underground mines. The main reason is that the existing systems are still not advanced enough. The current CASs utilise GPS, infrared, ultrasonic, RFID, Radar, electromagnetic etc have their limitations and disadvantages. For instance, GPS is widely used in a surface mine, but it cannot be applied in underground mine; Infrared and electromagnetic have the false positive problem.

This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

The continuous copper drossing process operated at Port Pine since 1962 has had limited copper removal capacity as determined by a maximum tolerable Cu/S ratio in feed and the level of sulphur in blast furnace bullion. Recent process development has been to overcome these limitations to meet increased copper throughput requirements. A sulphur addition system was developed and installed in August 1987. The system has capacity to increase sulphur input by over 150%, meeting the increased copper capacity requirement and also allowing independence from the upstream process for sulphur supply. Developments in process understanding have been applied within the limitations of the existing furnace design with a 10% increase in the maximum tolerable Cu/S ratio.

Aspects of the formation, decomposition and acid solubility of zinc ferrite were examined to find potential ways of increasing the recovery of zinc from a calcination process of mineral concentrates. Ferrite can begin to form within 2 hours at 450¦C. while complete reaction can occur after 35 minutes at 700¦C. The nature of the starting materials has a pronounced effect on the rate of formation and below 700¦C. ZnSO4 and Fe2O3 proved to be the least reactive of the materials investigated. It is possible that iron in a mineral admixed h sphalerite can be converted to a relatively inactive form, however, it does not seem possible to prevent zince f formation when iron is in the sphalerite lattice. At the two temperatures examined, 650¦C. and 700¦C, the presence of SO2 in the atmosphere accelerate .e formation of ferrite. Prolonged exposure to such atmospheres, however, caused the ferrite to decompose to ZnSO4 and Fe203. The optimum temperature for decomposition was 650¦C. and it was virtually complete within 2 hours in an atmosphere of 10% SO2 in air. Zinc ferrite was also decomposed by CO at low concentrations, and by heating with limestone at 1000¦C. for at least 2 hours. The solubility of zinc ferrite in acid was influenced by the starting materials used. As both the reaction temperature and the time at temperature increased the acid solubility decreased. The need to prevent the sterilisation of coal stems directly from the fact that it is a non-renewable resource. In N.S.W. a vast amount of coal resource is located under major public utilities such as freeways, railways, stored waters, pipelines carrying gas, water and sewage, and transmission lines. Total extraction has occurred under freeways, transmission lines and pipelines with little or no damage. Where damage has resulted, the cost of restoration was only a small fraction of the value of the coal recovered. However, coal at present is being sterilised and perhaps lost for ever under stored waters and railways. If engineering solutions are available for mining under these improvements economically and with maximum safety, then coal should be extracted and utilised to the benefit of the State.

Evaluation of different techniques for bottom fill stabilisation showed that frozen fill was the most economical method. In order to test the method a full-scale field test was performed in the Rehnstr÷m mine. The test was instrumented with temperature gauges and extensometers. Before the field test, frozen fill was tested at the laboratory. The mechanical properties of the frozen fill were determined by uniaxial compression and creep tests. A deformation model for the frozen fill was set up. Calculation procedure for design of spacing between the freezing tubes, time for freezing and calculation of the necessary capacity of the refrigeration plant was developed. These procedures were calibrated against the field test. The results of these investigations allow the following conclusions: From a mechanical point of view, frozen fill has excellent properties as a structural member and it also has excellent properties to support itself and the fill above. Methods for the thermal and mechanical design of freeze stabilisation have been developed and found adequate. The need to place the freezing tubes several years in advance of the future sill pillar mining, requires careful long-term planning and accurate documentation.

Dr Eric Bumstead is to be commended for his recent paper on gold analysis, published in the March 1984 Proceedings. It is not often that someone in industry, rather than academia, takes the time to collect and report on such a volume of data, data which is of interest to everyone involved in gold exploration and development.After reading the paper I felt, as a geochemist and as ayer, that there was another side to this whole question of analysis that few people are aware of, i.e. the problem facing a laboratory and how the laboratory can try to give the customer maximum value for money spent.Analyses for gold are carried out for different reasons, depending on the aims of the geologist or metallurgist who presents the samples. These can broadly be separated into three classes, to answer the following questions.1. "Is there any gold in this sample?"2. "Approximately how much gold is there in this sample?"3. "How much gold is there in this sample?"In every case there is a different balance between accuracy and precision, cost and avoiding chemical problems. By "chemical problems", I mean such possibilities as samples containing high levels of sulphides, gold present as tellurides, cyanide being present, contamination with mercury, and other mineralogical oddities, plus problems such as samples containing grease.There is no such thing as one assay to cover all possibilities.Samples in category I come mostly from early stages of exploration.There are often large numbers of samples, their mineralogy is not well known and hence chemical problems could exist, but the explorer wants assays at a minimum level of precision and expects minimum cost. These characteristics do not easily come together, for although the precision required is low, the accuracy required is high at low levels. A small positive result when the true answer is nil could lead to a fruitless search and a waste of money. Conversely, a nil result, when the true answer is a small but significant level of gold, could lead to the passing over of an area that may warrant further work.Because there are conflicting requirements for this type of assay, the methods chosen must be a compromise and different assayers will balance these requirements differently and come to different conclusions. The methods cover sample preparation, assay sample size and variations in assay techniques.

The precious metallogenic belt and its geoloqical-tectonic location in eastern China.The precious metallogenic belt of eastern China is located in the western part of the Pacific gold metallogenic belt, and occurs in the upper levels of the continent cut by a deep fault structure tending NNE and NE, and active during the Mesozoic. The precious metallogenic period ranges mainly from Late Jurassic to Early Cretaceous (160 Ma-110 Ma); subordinate mineralisation occurred during the Hercynian period, and was rare in the proterozoic.Seven precious metallogenic belts are recognised from east to west, i.e. from continent to the margin active belts, as follows:1. The continuously growing coal mining industry of India presently includes shovel dumper combinations in open cast mines, sometimes with dragline mining of overburden, together with the whole range of longwall and bord and pillar underground mining, continuously undergoing fuller mechanisation. This transition from "low tech" to "high tech" systems is now monitored for reliability and provides bases for comparisons of downtime relative to age and make of equipment, whether imported or indigenous, including spare parts, as well as frequencies of particular failures to allow analysis and progressive improvement. Varying geologies complicate technology and equipment requirements, especially in underground mine,s with minimal technological standardisation, but now, reliability in South Eastern Coalfields Limited has been given more importance and superior technological back-up is being developed.

The debate on the mechanism of adsorption of gold and silver di-cyanide onto activated carbon could be divided into two schools of thought. On the one hand, it has been proposed that the combined effects of electrostatic and chemical interaction between the activated carbon surface and adsorbing gold di-cyanide anion results in the adsorption of the latter. On the other hand the `ion-pair' adsorption reaction mechanism has been vigorously advocated as the dominant mechanism responsible for the adsorption of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon. It is maintained that gold is adsorbed onto the carbon surface as the neutral ion-pair [M"+][Au(CN)z ]". Adsorption is viewed as the result of mainly the chemical interaction while electrostatic interactions are neglected. The validity of the `ion-pair' adsorption mechanism may be challenged on a number of counts. However, the alternative mechanism (based on aqueous surface chemistry principles) has not gained general acceptance yet, because it has not been applied widely enough to explain the different adsorption phenomena associated with gold di-cyanide on activated carbon. In the present study the case in favour of an adsorption mechanism based on general aqueous surface chemistry principles is presented. A model framework is developed for the adsorption reaction mechanism of gold di-cyanide onto activated carbon which incorporates the effects of chemical and electrostatic interactions between the dissolved species, the aqueous solution and the carbon surface. This model is then employed to explain a wide variety of reported adsorption phenomena for gold di-cyanide on activated carbon, such as the effects of pH, the adsorption of different metal cyano complexes, ionic strength, and type and concentration of cations in solution. In addition the effects of cyanide and dissolved oxygen concentration were investigated. No ready explanation, in terms of aqueous surface chemistry principles, is yet available for the switch in adsorption behaviour that agrees with ion exchange to ion-pair adsorption with increasing ionic strength.

The Broken Hill orebodies have 'traditionally been mined by cut and fill trethods. In the mid-1950's New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited experimented with sublevel longhole open stoping but did not pursue the method due to inefficient loading and poor fragmentation. The introduction of longhole open stoping in 1968 was a radical change and was necessary to enable the profitable extraction of lower grade orebodies and this method is now used for 55% of the production from The Zinc Corporation, Limited and New Broken Hill Consolidated Limited mines.

When preparing an appraisal, valuation or feasibility study for a new mining project it is difficult to imagine the technical, economic, social and environmental context that the project will occupy in ten or 15 years time. This paper is about our ability to foresee the future, the choices available now in matching the project to that future context, and about the flexibility that exists in adapting the project to a changing environment. The author draws upon his experience of project reviews, valuations and feasibility studies in the mid to late 1980s in Australia and New Zealand to explore how the project context has changed since key decisions were made and what this tells us about decisions made today for future projects.

In recent years, computational fluid dynamic (CFD) modelling of mechanically stirred flotation cells has been used to study the complexity of the flow within the cells. In CFD modelling, the flotation cell is discretised into individual finite volumes where local values of flow properties are calculated. The flotation effect is studied as three subprocesses including collision, attachment and detachment. In the present work, these subprocesses are modelled in a laboratory flotation cell. The flotation kinetics involving a population balance for particles in a semi-batch process has been developed. From turbulent collision models, the local rates of bubble-particle encounters have been estimated from the local turbulent velocities. The probabilities of collision, adhesion and stabilisation have been calculated at each location in the flotation cell. The net rate of attachment, after accounting for detachments, has been used in the kinetic model involving transient CFD simulations with removal of bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer. Comparison of the predicted fraction of particles remaining in the cell and the fraction of free particles to the total number of particles remaining in the cell indicates that the particle recovery rate to the pulp-froth interface is much slower than the net attachment rates. For the case studied, the results indicate that the bubbles are loaded with particles quite quickly, and that the bubble surface area flux is the limiting factor in the recovery rate at the froth interface. This explains why the relationship between flotation rate and bubble surface area flux is generally used as a criterion for designing flotation cells. The predicted flotation rate constants also indicate that fine and large particles do not float as well as intermediate sized particles of 120 - 240 ¦m range. This is consistent with the flotation recovery generally observed in flotation practice. The magnitude of the flotation rate constants obtained by CFD modelling indicates that transport rates of the bubble-particle aggregates to the froth layer contribute quite significantly to the overall flotation rate and this is likely to be the case especially in plant-scale equipment.

The Mining Act (1992) and the Petroleum Act (1980) provide for the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) to take up equity holdings in mining and petroleum projects. The price the Government pays for its share is based on the historical cost of exploration and development on the project to the date of government equity acquisition. The equity level to be acquired is not fixed and ranges up to 30o for mining and up to 22.5s for petroleum at the discretion of the Government of the time.The objective of this paper is to examine the pros and cons of State equity holdings in PNG from the point of view of both the State and the developer. Using an economic model of the PNG mining taxation system an assessment is made of the effective return on investment received by the State from such equity holdings. The results are compared with government revenues from other taxation measures.

The able address on the currency question given by the Right Honorable A. J. Balfour, M.P., late leader of the Government, at the Mansion House lately, before a large and influential audience, will strike a key-note that will resound throughout the world. It is high time that gentlemen of position and influence should come forward and express their views on this subject, so as to cause the matter to be,more seriously considered than it has been. The question can be no longer ignored or treated with indifference by bankers, financiers, merchants, miners, and others interested in the settlment on some basis the relative values gold and silver bear to each other. It is gratifying to not that such a great leader of political opinion as Mr. Balfour has given serious attention to this important question.The address created a deep impression ,on the minds of many who probably had not given the matter much att.ention, and Mr. Balfour's words will re-echo over a wide range of thought with such effect that I have no doubt they will materially help to check the downward tendency of the value and uses of silver. As a mining engineer, interested in the development of our mining resources for increasing gold aud silver for currency, and having devoted much attention to the subject, I cordially approve of the views set forth by Mr. Balfouf, and I think the general body of all interested in the production of gold and silver will do the same.
