We have determined the experimental rate constants for chalcopyrite particles floated from a complex sulfide ore and compared them with those calculated using a recently developed flotation model. The model incorporates contributions from the efficiencies of collision, attachment and stability between particles and bubbles, as well as their frequency of collision. For these calculations, the contact angle of the chalcopyrite particles in the ore was obtained independently using a surface spectroscopic approach. The calculated flotation rate constants were in good agreement with the experimental data and able to reproduce the characteristic maximum in flotation rate constant for particles of intermediate size. The values of bubble velocity and turbulent dissipation energy derived from these calculations are relatively low and may well correspond to mean values of these parameters inside the flotation cell. We have extended this approach through the application of a property based model to an operating plant, with a satisfactory outcome.

Energy is central to respond to critical stakes on human and industrial development requirements as well as on climate change. The increase of the share of carbon-free energy sources in the global supply mix will help to reduce significantly greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) as power generation accounts currently for 41 per cent of these emissions from the energy sector. In this energetic mix, nuclear and renewable energies are complementary, the first more focused in the baseload power generation whilst the second is well suited for decentralised power generation. In this context, AREVA's goal is to enable everyone to have access to a cleaner, safer and more economical energy. Regarding nuclear energy, AREVA's strategy is to capitalise on its integrated operation model, which groups together fuel cycle and nuclear power plant construction, aiming at building one third of the new nuclear capacities and securing the fuel cycle supply chain for its existing and future customers. Therefore, the front end of the uranium fuel cycle, from mining to the fabrication of fuel assemblies, has a key role in the sustainability of the nuclear industry. The replacement of the current capacity and the entrance of new countries on the nuclear power generation might lead to a significant rise of uranium demand by 2020. In order to be prepared in time, AREVA defined an ambitious industrial program to expand mineral reserves, increase the production of uranium concentrates, replace the conversion capacity, build two new uranium enrichment plants, one in France and one in the United States and upgrade its fuel manufacturing plants. To support the front-end industrial activities in the short and long term, AREVA invests on a portfolio of R&D projects to find out solutions to meet customers' needs, to improve its competitiveness and to develop new concepts and solutions to anticipate future market evolutions. In particular, some important technological challenges in mining must be surmounted to develop cost-effective methods to explore and exploit low grade deposits while creating sustainable solutions for reducing reagent, water and energy consumptions. In this lecture, an overview of the industrial investments of AREVA in the front end of the uranium fuel cycle and some highlights on its R&D major axis will be presented. This is an abstract only. Energy studies have been undertaken at a number of open coal mines in the Hunter valley. A range of energy efficiency benchmarks and targets have been established, which, when applied across coal mines, will assist in leading to a significant improvement in energy efficiency in the coal mining industry in NSW, thereby leading to an improvement in environmental performance. Typically, energy efficiency improvements of 20 per cent and higher appear possible at many mines leading to a commensurate reduction in this controllable operating cost, ie energy. On the basis that annual energy costs and net profit are similar for many mines, a reduction in energy costs by 20 per cent will lead to increase of 20 per cent in net profit.

During the last decades, maintenance has changed from an ordinary repair activity to a complex function that plays an essential role contributing for the companyÆs results. The increasing level of complexity of modern equipment motivates maintenance personnel to improve both techniques, and management systems, in order to face the new challenges. Managing properly those modern means of production requires knowledge of methods and planning systems, controlling and performing maintenance tasks, in such a way that two objectives are achieved at the same time: system efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This paper shows CVRDÆs experience on evolving and implementing a model to plan and manage maintenance activities in order to achieve a higher level of performance on its operations.

Australia had been enjoying a market boom led by the mining sector and West Australian mines were leading the way to satisfy the massive demand for our natural resources, especially from China. However, the Apache gas explosion on Varanus Island, 97 km off the west coast, has clearly demonstrated how the unexpected can suddenly impact on profitability and investor confidence for the mining industry. Risk management with contingency planning can provide the most cost-effective solution to help ensure mining projects are successful. For this discussion we will focus primarily on contingency planning, CP for mining projects à and how to plan for the unexpected. The Apache gas explosion will be our example æUnexpected EventÆ. Insurance may provide financial compensation but it will not protect your reputation as a reliable supplier or prevent damage to investor confidence and future mine projects. However, contingency planning can provide real protection for mining projects à to survive the unexpected.

The grades of alluvial ore deposits are low compared with grades of hard rock mining. This factor, combined with other parameters of irregular distribution of particles, bedrock irregularities, size of particles, nugget effect, ore characteristics, and wet horizons, combine to place alluvial deposits among the most difficult to evaluate, and on which to establish an ore reserve with a high degree of confidence. With increased geological input, correct selection and implementation of sampling method, due regard to sample representativity and process design, these confidence levels can be achieved.

The approvals process for a major cut-back is not a simple exercise when a mine is located alongside the community. Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) has been through an extensive process of government, JV owner and community consultation to ensure that necessary permitting processes and detailed studies have been completed to allow this six year extension to the open pit mine life to be achieved. With the Kalgoorlie Boulder community being on the doorstep of the mine, it is critical to ensure that the operation runs smoothly and complies to the license conditions to achieve the full value of the Golden Pike cut-back, and leave behind a sustainable legacy for the local community. The leaching behaviour of BHAS copper matte in oxygenated acidic sulphate chloride solutions at 85¦C has been studied using samples containing 34% copper, 41% lead and 12% sulphur. Copper sulphide in the matte, essentially Cu2S was found to leach in two distinct stages. Similar to the behaviour of pure chalcocite, copper dissolution in the first stage was affected by the availability of oxygen in solution. The presence of chloride ions in the leachant was essential if there was to be any leaching in the second stage (which usually commenced after about 40% of the copper had been taken into solution). Lead sulphide in the matte was oxidised to lead sulphate and formed a shell around the partially leached matte particles. Electrochemical studies showed that this lead sulphate and/or sulphur produced during leaching can form a passivating layer around the copper sulphide. However, this layer was disrupted when chloride ions were present. A Plackett-Burman analysis was used to determine the species in the recycled leach solution that affect the leaching of copper. Under the experimental conditions used, in the first stage the rate of copper dissolution was influenced by the concentrations of sulphuric acid, Zn(II), Cu(II), Fe(III) and Cd(II). In the second stage, the rate was futher modified by the concentrations of Cl(I) and As(V) ions. In solutions of low acidity and high As(V) concentration, insoluble copper arsenate formed which coated the partially leached matte particles and acted as a barrier to futher reaction.

The Paracale gold region had been known for hundreds of years, but the first professional attempts to work the lode and alluvial deposits were made only in the 1890s by the London-based Philippines Mineral Syndicate. Complex ores, transportation problems, and the Philippine Insurrection halted operations. Ultimate success went to American firms, though Frank Karuth's Philippines Mineral Syndicate had pioneered the field.

Botanical exploration has identified many plant species that naturally accumulate very high concentrations of elements, particularly heavy metals. The enormous potential applications of some of these species to remove metals from soil (phytoextraction) are slowly being realised. The discovery of hyperaccumulation has resulted in considerable research into applications for removing contaminants (phytoremediation) or more importantly, in the context of this discussion, for commercially æfarmingÆ metals (phytomining) from metal-bearing soils. Currently published phytoextraction models estimate Ni yields using Berkheya coddii (a South African nickelophyte) are approximately $US 750 ha-1, excluding the cost of processing. Research indicates that B. coddii will also accumulate significant amounts of Co, resulting in a considerable increase in the value of the crop. Modification of the substrate by acidification, fertilisation and/or chelation indicate fruitful avenues for improving this yield by increasing the extractability of the target element, elevating biomass production rates and/or rendering other contained heavy metals extractable. Plant uptake of more insoluble elements, such as Au, may be induced in many plant species using chemical compounds. These chelates applied to the soil, form soluble complexes with poorly soluble metals forcing them into the soil solution. Plants may then accumulate these metal complexes through transpiration. Research has achieved foliar Au concentrations of 78 mg kg-1 in Iberis intermedia, 56 mg kg-1 in Brassica juncea and 9 mg kg-1 in B. coddii (on a dry weight basis). Therefore in theory B. coddii could phytomine a soil containing modest concentrations of Ni, Co and Au to yield 116 kg Ni, 36 kg Co and over 6 oz Au ha-1 at a current value of $US 4000. Root crops have also shown promise in chelate assisted Au accumulation (eg 6.8 mg kg-1 in Beta vulgaris and 118.5 mg kg-1 in Raphanus sativus). Phytoextraction, in its varied applications, is rapidly coming of age as a technology having considerable potential for application in environmental science and the minerals industry. Phytotechnology employs unique plant biochemical behaviours in the rhizosphere, driven by the sunÆs energy, to seek out and concentrate low levels of heavy metals at very low cost.

The paper briefly describes the mining system employed on Western Deep Levels for the past 20 years. The negative aspects which gave rise to a new mechanized method of mining are discussed. The sequence of events leading from the Mine's first attempt at trackless mining in 1980 to the present day in-stope project is presented. The original justification for this project and the in-stope trackless mining method is described in detail. The results to date are evaluated and the original rationale for going in-stope trackless mining questioned. A totally new mining philosophy for Western Deep Levels, whereby major geological disturbances are left in situ and longwalls re-established and mined using trackless mining machinery is described. The economics of this mining method are discussed. Trackless mining machinery can also be put to good use within the conventional longwalls in a new method of mining using Load Haul Dumpers (LHD) in reef drives. When the instope trackless mining project commenced in 1983, it was stated that expansion to any significant degree with diesel powered vehicles could be ruled out and electrically driven alternatives would have to be developed. This issue is discussed and the Mine's decision to expand with diesel powered vehicles explained. Finally, the extent to which trackless mining is likely to be seen in the 1990 s at Western Deep Levels is discussed.

All high stopes and pillars in Anqing Copper Mine were extracted by use of large-diameter longhole mining method. The height of stopes was 120 m. The forced mining was the leading concept that the safe and efficient operation was carried out in this mine, while the mining production was faced with the major technical problems on the stability of both primary ore pillars produced in the first-step stoping of stopes and the cemented fillbody on two sides of stope in the second-step stopping of pillars. Starting with mining technology, the authors emphatically describe the test results obtained in Anqing Copper Mine and make an approach to the deployment prospects and development trend of large-diameter longhole mining technology in China underground metal mines.

Haematite Recovery from a Tailings Stream Laboratory and pilot scale testing were carried out in 1999 on a tailing sample from a North American iron ore plant using gravity, magnetic and flotation techniques. The ore contained 16 per cent iron mainly in the fine (-38 ¦m) size fraction. Two methods of evaluating the separation efficiency were used; Selectivity Index and Z factor analysis. Tabling and magnetic separation produced poor results, with flotation testing showing some promise, generating concentrates assaying more than 40 per cent Fe. High grade concentrates containing more than 67 per cent Fe were generated using the Kelsey Centrifugal Jig, and it was recommended that this technique be pursued at a larger scale to verify the results obtained.

The resurgence of Silicosis and Coal Worker’s Pneumoconiosis (CWP) in coalmines has placed the spotlight back on the management of worker exposure to particulate matter across all mining sectors (Coal Workers Pneumoconiosis Select Committee, 2017). There already exists a substantial body of knowledge on particulate matter and its impacts upon human health (National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, 2018). The contribution of silica to respiratory disease is well known and there is a growing concern for exposure to diesel particulate matter. However, it is also clear that there are major gaps in our understanding. In part, those gaps relate to the contribution to adverse health effects of mineralogical constituents in the dust (LaBranche et al, 2021a). It is also becoming evident that the size and shape of the particulate matter can affect its potential impact on human health.The University of Queensland has developed a methodology for characterising respirable and inhalable dust samples using scanning electron microscopy. Multiple samples from numerous mining operations have already been analysed using the UQ methodology. The process has been successful in showing the variety of mineralogica lcomponents and particle size distributions presentin various areas of the mines.

Based on the 2021 Volume 5 State of PlayTM mining survey of key executives and board members in the mining sector, the key responses to ‘Which of the following technologies will have the biggest impact on mining in the next 15 years?’, were ‘Sensing and Data’ followed by ‘AI and Analytics’. From the early 1970s it would have been unlikely to predict the level of sensing and automation introduced to the broad industrial sector. No better example is the automobile industry where the combination of technological advances and external drivers (such as emissions control) have driven an incredible rate of change. The introduction of sensing, data, AI, and automation in the mining industry is just ramping up. Until now our energy efficiency, environmental footprint, labour shortage, skills, and safety have not been challenged by stakeholders in the way we are seeing market forces develop today. In order to address these challenges, we need to look back to the automobile industry and learn their lessons to accelerate our application of digital capability, analysis, AI and automation This is critical, particularly as access to skilled human resources becomes more difficult. An example of how this can be achieved in a gold processing plant utilising the latest real-time sensing technologies is the ‘Carbon Scout’ developed by Curtin University, and OLGA developed by CSIRO, which are both online technologies, coupled together with Gekko’s ‘Neon’ digital platform to achieve a fully automated real-time gold processing system.

The aim of this paper is to present an innovative method to help delineate potential target volumes for haematite-goethite mineralisation as opposed to more magnetic ores. This is achieved through interpretation and modelling (2.5D and 3D inversions) of ground magnetics and gravity surveys over the Koolanooka South prospect in Western Australia. The targets are assumed to be dense and weakly magnetic and hosted within banded iron formation (BIF) horizons. Geophysical interpretation (2D map) was performed using a variety of processed magnetic and gravity images (Betts et al, 2007) to determine the distribution of lithologies, to understand the structural architecture and to map out any anomalous areas of excess density (possibly indicating goethite alteration). The created geological map is used to build geological cross-sections (geometrically consistent) that were modelled (in 2.5 D) against both potential field datasets. The crosssections are consequently used as the framework to build a 3D geological model. The model defines 3D volumes of rocks including several BIF horizons. The distribution of densities and magnetic susceptibilities of the BIFs is inverted within the GOCAD«-VPmg environment to reduce the misfit between the response of the model and the observed gravity and magnetics. By combining the results of both petrophysical property distribution it is possible to map out (using classical GIS type queries in 3D) volumes of higher density and lower magnetic susceptibility.

The stratigraphy of the Singleton Coal Measures is reviewed and a revised stratigrapixy which has been ratified by the N.S.W. Standing Committee for Coalfield geology is nominated and defined by a selected type section. Withir the type section the occurrence of repetitive phases are illustrated and described. Coal. Measure units within the Singleton Coal Mean sures, termed the Wollombi and Wittingham Coal Measures respectively, are correlated with the Newcastle and Tomago Coal Measures. In formal nomenclature the Singleton Coal Measures are designated the Singleton Super Group. The major depositional cycles within the Coal Mea- sures are outlined together with those lesser phases within the Coal bearing sequences that influence the mining conditions likely to be encountered. Both tectonic and sedimentary features of the Singleton Coal Measures are considered and the localized post depositional effects on the coal seams and roof strata in- duced by differential, compactions are emphar Sized.

A new leaching regime was implemented at Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold MinesÆ (KCGM) Gidji plant on a cyanide leach of ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate. High lime concentration and lead nitrate were used to overcome the refractoriness of the fine sulfides (high reactivity of fine sulfides with the presence of gold tellurides). The leach pretreatment stage was shown to be detrimental and was shut down. Lime titration was introduced as part of the process control. It was shown that the leach could be performed at low dissolved oxygen, (ie 3 - 5 ppm) to avoid sulfide oxidation and the associated high cyanide and lime consumption. Plant results showed reduced cyanide consumption (40 per cent) and an accelerated leaching rate, whereby most of the gold was dissolved in 24 hours compared to 72 hours used previously. Similar work was performed at KCGMÆs Fimiston plant, which leached a combined ultra-fine ground sulfide concentrate along with the slimes fraction from hydrocycloning the bulk flotation concentrate. The use of lead nitrate, high lime and carbon-in-leach generated a faster leaching rate and minimised adsorption of gold on fine pyrite particles. The grind, previously controlled with a P80, was replaced by a P98 to give a better operational indication of top size hydrocyclone performance. Before the implementation of the changes, average leach residues for slimes and UFG were respectively 4.0 g/t and 5.5 g/t. With the modifications to the leaching regime, average leach residues were lower by 1.5 - 2.0 g/t. Whilst significant improvements have been demonstrated, further work is progressing at KCGM to further reduce ultra-fine concentrate leach tail grades, and also to improve the understanding of concentrate refractoriness and the factors responsible for differences between laboratory and plant leach results. Estimated profits since the implementation of the new approach are in the range of $A3.5 million per year.

Suppression of the explosion of the world population and the surprising increase of waste and emissions are major targets confronting mankind in this century. Recycling and waste minimisation are key words for sustainable development in a highly industrial society. The argument is really whether or not recycling done well is the solution to the environment problem for the following generation. If energy is not necessary in the recycling, all materials have to be recycled. The greatest interest among the environmental issues is the regulation of CO2 gas emission. It must be recognised that it is not possible to completely renew expended energy. Some of the recycling systems currently used are thought to increase the load on the environment rather than to be beneficial. Although metal industries have consumed tremendous amount of energy and discharged a large quantity of CO2 and solid waste, the metals have supported a high quality of life. The metal production industries such as the iron and steel industry and the non-ferrous metals industry can work well recycling of not only metals but also other materials without consuming more energy. Waste plastics, for example, are use as a reductant in a blast furnace. The role of metallurgical industry in the recycling-based society is introduced in the present paper to recognise how the metal industries can contribute recycling and waste minimisation.

The metal production industry is a significant contributor to global CO2 emissions due to the use of fossil fuels such as coal and coke. To mitigate these emissions and meet climate goals, innovative and sustainable technologies are required. Molten salt electrolysis is a promising technology that directly produces metals from their precursor sulfides or oxides using electricity. When combined with renewable electricity and an inert anode, the electrolysis process can be carbon neutral. This paper presents the results of two pilot-scale studies on the electrolytic reduction of metal oxides and sulfides in molten salts. The first study focuses on the electrolytic reduction of chalcopyrite in molten NaCl-KCl salt. The results demonstrate that in situ separation of copper, iron, and sulfur is possible, enabling the extraction of all valuable elements without CO2 emissions. Furthermore, the findings underscore the capability to eliminate impurities like zinc, antimony, arsenic, and mercury from the electrolysis product. The second study investigates the electrolytic reduction of pure/synthetic chemicals of wüstite, hematite, and magnetite, as well as a magnetite-type iron ore in molten NaOH salt. The findings reveal a stepwise reduction of iron oxides from high valence to low valence, ultimately leading to the production of metallic iron electrolytically. Notably, this study underscores the challenges associated with the selection of an economically viable and durable inert anode material for efficient oxygen generation. These results indicate that molten salt electrolysis provides a sustainable and green route for base metal production. The use of this technology has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions in the metal production industry, contributing to achieving climate goals.
