The initial results for the cyanide leach gold recoveries were very poor on a high-grade primary sulphide ore of 6.2 g/t Au with no silver. Subsequent mineralogy showed the ore to be a characteristic pyrite, carbonaceous refractory gold ore (double refractory). This was a very disappointing finding. A small scale gravity and flotation test programme was developed to produce a concentrate with the majority of the gold. This also failed with most of the gold remaining in the tailings. An ICP scan also showed variable levels of antimony. A Desktop Study was undertaken with minimal laboratory test work looking at Pressure Oxidation (POX), roasting, ultra-fine grinding, graphite passivation and consideration of any new technologies that might be applicable to this type of ore. The subsequent Study highlighted how difficult these double refractory gold ores are to process and highlighted some recent technology developments may be applicable. CITATION: Connelly, D, 2018. It is acknowledged that the analysis of iron ores using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for major and minor elements is best carried out on fusion discs. This method of sample preparation eliminates mineral and particle size effects which can lead to biased results when using pressed powder pellets. However, the fusion disc method is costly as it requires a high capital investment in platinumware, requires experienced operators and uses expensive fluxes. Also, the dilution effect complicates the analysis of trace elements. For many applications, such as exploration and mining control, the method of XRF analysis of iron ores by pressed powder pellet probably provides data of adequate quality. Kumba Iron Ore, an iron ore producer in South Africa, recognises this and carries out most analyses of iron ore by pressed powder pellet and uses the automated fusion method mainly for certification of in-house calibration standards and quality control (QC) samples that are used for validation of pressed powder pellet method purposes. Automated fusion is also used for analysing the composite export shipping samples. All the other exploration, production, despatching and plant operation samples are done by the pressed powder pellet method. Automation of sample preparation procedures should improve the quality of data for pressed powder pellets. To compare the precision of the three methods of sample preparation and XRF analysis, 20 aliquots of a QC standard were prepared and analysed by each procedure/preparation method. The results and statistical data on the most important elements, Fe, K2O and P, are as shown later in Table 2.Clearly the precision is best for the auto prepared fusion discs, as expected, and worst for the manually prepared pressed powder pellets. However, the data generated from the auto prepared pressed powder pellets compare remarkably well against those from the auto prepared fusion discs.

In most States of Australia it is a legislative requirement for underground mines to have a separate means of egress from the normal means of ingress to permit the safe evacuation of workers to the surface in event of an emergency. Such egress may be in the form of a ladderway equipped shaft/underlie or trafficable incline/decline. Additionally, there is a general requirement to have one or more airways, separate to the main shaft or other principal entrance of an underground mine, extending to the lowest level to permit ventilation to all parts of the mine. Fulfilling these requirement is difficult in the development phase of a mine when access underground is achievable by only a shaft or decline in the process by being sunk. What is frequently practiced in Australia is for production to then commence, sometimes in association with continuing development, in the same configuration without the establishment of this separate method of egress to the surface nor additional airway/s with reliance on refuge chambers to cater for back up in any emergency. Not only, could this jeopardise the health and safety of workers in case of an underground emergency it could be construed as a statutory breach of legislation. While recognising that refuge chambers are often used throughout underground operations nowadays their equipping and the criteria for their location needs to be bought into focus. This presentation discusses how such legislative requirement can be met alongside the use and appropriateness of refuge chambers.

An established method exists for the computation of rope lifetimes for shaft hoisting applications in the mining industry. In an earlier study, during the 1990s, an initial comparison of the calculated and actual rope life for various types of hoisting plants showed reasonably good correlation. In the meantime the calculation method has been developed further. The rotation behaviour of the rope during hoisting and the effects of multilayer spooling on drums are now considered in the assessment of expected rope lifetimes. The ability to determine an estimate of rope life in advance is particularly useful for mining companies. Such analysis allows them to predict the effects of rope choice in their particular application and thereby reduce the total cost of rope ownership. Such calculation techniques also allow designers of winding plants to identify aspects of the hoisting configuration that may negatively affect rope life. Often small (low-cost) changes, like increasing the diameter of head sheaves, can result in considerable improvements in rope performance. This paper describes the extended lifetime calculation method and gives further examples of the comparison between actual and calculated rope lives for operational double-drum mine hoists.

An investigation was made into the mineralogical characteristics of the upper portions of the 650 and 750 copper lodes. The investigation was based on a comprehensive suite of geological specimens representing all types of mineralization encountered during mining until the end of 1954 and the chief aims of the investigation were to determine (a) the minerals present and their textures and associations, (b) the paragenetic sequence of deposition of minerals in the orebodies, (c) significant changes, if any, which could be found in the orebodies with depth, and (d) the nature and mode of occurrence of nickel in the ore. The general structure of the orebodies is outlined and their mineral composition given. 10 textures exhibited by the ore minerals are described and a paragenetic sequence of events in the formation of the copper orebodies is outlined. No decrease in the complexity of the sulphide mineral textures with depth could be seen and no evidence was found to suggest that the tenor of the ore would decrease with depth although some factors which may eventually limit the extent of the orebodies are noted. The mode of occurrence of minor elements in the orebodies is described. Notes on the occurrence of pyrite, aikinite and berthierite in the orebodies is given and the orebodies are considered to be identified with LiIidgren's mesothermal type of sulphide ore deposit in which considerable replacement of older by younger generations of sulphide minerals occurred.INTRODUCTIONA mineragraphic study was made by Stillwell and Edwards (1945) of a suite of specimens submitted by Mount Isa Mines Limited from the Mount Isa Black Star copper orebodies with a view to determining 1. the nature, extent and association of arsenic, antimonyand bismuth minerals, 2. the mode of occurrence of silver and 3. whether galena and sphalerite occurred in minute forms and below the sizes readily observed in hand specimens.

In both the U.S.A. and Canada regulations concerning the reporting on mineral resources and especially ore reserves have been established. The regulations are virtually identical for the two countries with the main exceptions being who is franchised to write the report and how the various reserve categories may be used in reports to the public. Both countries divide ore reserves into "proven", "probable" and "inferred" categories. "Proven" reserves are those for material for which tonnage is computed from dimensions revealed in outcrops, trenches, underground workings or drill holes and for which the grade is composed from the results of adequate sampling. "Probable" reserves are those which are less well defined than "proven" while "inferred" reserves are generally those which may exist through geological and geophysical interpretation. The AusIMM/AMIC draft guidelines as proposed for use in Australia define more rigidly the ore reserve categories into "proved" and "probable" terms, which can only be applied following a full and favourable analysis of economic, mining, metallurgical, marketing and sociopolitical factors. If the ore reserves are not supported by this analysis they are placed into a "resource" category. Proper application of this proposed Australian model could prove useful when dealing with grass-root prospects or mining properties in the pre-feasibility stage. Combined with competent reporting, use of the proposed guidelines should ensure standardised and more verifiable analysis/valuation of a company's mineral assets.

Today's emphasis on the enterprise bargaining process must be seen as an opportunity for organisations to further develop occupational health and safety standards at work. In particular, this shift from a centralised industrial relations system to employer, employee bargaining, presents organisations with an excellent opportunity to develop OH & S at the `shop floor' level. This is despite real difficulties in presenting hard data on the cost benefits. Unfortunately, examination of enterprise agreements ratified by the Australian Industrial Relations Commission (AIRC), show that less than 32 per cent contain provision for occupational health and safety. Those addressing the issues of occupational health and safety have included segments such as: ò rehabilitation activities; ò a new emphasis for workplace occupational health and safety committees; ò formalising procedures related to hazard identification and control; ò the use of personal protective clothing; and ò occupational hygiene and health monitoring issues. For example, an enterprise agreement reached between CIG-Gases and their unions, included clauses which commit employees to attending ten safety meetings and two work place inspections each year, in order for them to receive any further pay rises.

The presence of high concentrations of dissolved ions in groundwater, sea water or recycled water may alter the water structure, particle surface wettability and colloidal interactions between bubbles and particles and can have a significant effect on mineral flotation. While the impact of water quality on the flotation of precious and base metal minerals is well established, no relevant published study exists currently regarding the effect of water salinity on the flotation of rare earth bearing minerals. This paper attempts to quantify the effect of water quality variation on flotation recovery and grade of rare earth minerals and gain an understanding on which ions existing in saline water affect flotation behaviour. Specifically, it is aimed at investigating the effects of water quality on the flotation of monazite in the presence of cations such as Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, and Na+. Flotation tests, zeta potential measurements, and adsorption tests were performed to explain the flotation behaviour. It was found that monovalent ions such as Na+ and K+ have negative impact on rare earth minerals recovery and grade. The result of single mineral flotation tests showed that the floatability of monazite was significantly depressed in the presence of Ca2+ and Mg2+. The result of single mineral flotation test showed varying depression levels in the presence ions in the order of Ca2+ > Mg2+ > Na ~ K.

This paper describes modelling studies of the flotation cells used by BHP Billiton Nickel West Ltd in the slimes circuit at Mt Keith. The aim is to achieve a better understanding of the hydrodynamic limitations in the existing cells to improve nickel recovery. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations have been performed on the 100 m3 mechanically-stirred cells. The data produced by the simulations include velocity vectors, gas holdup distribution, solids distribution, bubble size, superficial gas velocity and turbulent parameters. These results have been checked and found to match hydrodynamic measurements at the plant. An analysis of the data found that one of the limitations in fine particle recovery was related to the air bubbles discharged with the tailing. The air in the discharge was caused by the high viscosity of the pulp. In the presence of fine particles, the pulp exhibits high viscosity with a yield stress. The increased drag due to high viscosity caused the bubbles to rise more slowly up the cell. This results in a significant hold-up of bubbles, some of which report to the tailing with associated loss of valuable minerals. A parametric CFD study of the operating variables shows that less air would be discharged in the tailing by decreasing the following: air flow rate,pulp density,stirring speed, andfrother addition. Simulation results indicate that these changes would cause a lowering of the air hold up in the cell especially near the discharge area. Predictions of the bubble-particle attachment rates under various operating conditions have also been calculated. Although it is possible to increase attachment rates by increasing stirring speed or by increasing pulp density, the amount of air discharged and the amount of nickel loss through the tailing will also increase. The project showed that CFD modelling is a powerful tool for studying hydrodynamic effects of bubble-particle interactions in flotation cells.

Low-grade manganese ore from Sandur, India containing 28.2 per cent manganese and 20.9 per cent iron was roasted with sulphating agents, viz ammonium sulphate and sulphuric acid. The effects of temperature of roasting (300 - 800°C), time (15 - 120 minutes) and amount of sulphating agent (0.5 to 2.5 times stoichiometric amount) were studied. Under optimum conditions, it was possible to extract 92 per cent manganese with 0.5 per cent iron at a temperature of 700°C for 90 minutes duration with stoichiometric ammonium sulphate. Further increase in quantity of ammonium sulphate has marginal effect on manganese extraction.Similar studies were carried out with sulphuric acid, and an extraction of about 87 per cent manganese with similar iron contamination was achieved at a temperature of 700°C for 60 minutes duration with stoichiometric quantity of the reagent. Selective extraction of manganese with respect to iron is discussed.

Estimation of operating costs in the nickel production industry requires a detailed analysis of material flows from mine to smelter to refinery. Despite the small number of nickel producers compared to other base metals, the existence of two very different ore types (sulphide and laterite) and a wide variety of mining and processing technologies make the identification of these flows of critical importance if an accurate global picture is to be obtained. Smelting and refining processes in nickel metallurgy have evolved with a high degree of adaptation to specific operating conditions in different locations. Overall costs are calculated by combining individual cost elements for each unit in production chains from mine to saleable metal product. The average cost of western world primary nickel production in 1995 was US$2.07/lb ($4560/tonne). Average operating costs remained virtually unchanged in the three years to 1995 after an 8.5 per cent fall in 1993, but a 3.9 per cent increase to $2.15/lb is expected for 1996. A major factor in this rise results from the lower prices of copper and cobalt this year, reducing the by-product credits available to major producers.

Initially, the N2TEC system had been found to operate satisfactorily, but cyanide in the flotation mill water appeared to be responsible for a loss in pyrite recovery. This supposition was confirmed with laboratory experiments, and a program was initiated to study flotation chemistry variables by electrochemically controlled contact angle measurements. Experimental results show that activation of pyrite in such cyanide solutions can be achieved more effectively with lead than with copper. Subsequently, based on these fundamental studies, significant improvement at the Lone Tree Plant was achieved by lead activation, in which case the recovery increased to expected levels. The effect of activator is particularly significant not only with respect to pyrite depression by residual cyanide, but also with respect to collector (PAX) consumption and the initial state of the pyrite surface. Experimental results show the importance of the pyrite surface state and the rather interesting features of the activation process.

E Deposit is located at BHP BillitonÆs Area C iron ore operations in the central region of the Hamersley Province, Western Australia. It is hosted by the Marra Mamba Iron Formation, the lowermost unit of the Archaean to Lower Proterozoic Hamersley Group. Mineralisation at E Deposit East is contained within the Mount Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Iron Formation and extends into the lower West Angela Member of the overlying Wittenoom Formation. Use of a combination of geological and geophysical techniques has enabled the geological setting of the deposit to be qualified. Interpretation of detailed mine face mapping, downhole geophysics, geochemistry, geological logging and photography has identified D2- related thrust faulting, with substantial south-over-north displacement. Similarly, in-pit mapping at the nearby C Deposit has revealed intense localised D2 deformation, including overturning and thrust faulting. The interpreted structure illustrates that iron ore deposits in the central Hamersley Province can be intensely deformed and require detailed geological investigation utilising technical data from mapping and drilling to enable the creation of robust grade-models for the mining operation.

A stibnite flotation concentrate from Costerfield in Victoria was found to contain 63.3 g/t An while its sizing distribution indicated that 81.6 per cent of the material was less than 38 ¦m. A 24 hour cyanidation test by a standard bottle roll method recovered 15 per cent of this gold. Pressure cyanidation under conditions of ambient temperature, 40 per cent pulp density, an oxygen pressure of 1000 - 2000 kPa and an initial NaCN concentration of 15 kg/t, resulted in a recovery of 65 pe cent of the gold after only two hours of leaching. Aqueous pressure preoxidation of the concentrate followed by the standard bottle roll cyanidation realised gold recoveries as high as 96 per cent. Industrias Pe±oles, S A de C V (Pe±oles) in Mexico, is a major silver producer. The Pe±oles mining division has eight operations and the flotation process in seven of them to concentrate the metal and mineral values. Common metal and mineral values are: metallic gold and silver; gold-silver alloy (electrum); silver sulfide minerals (acanthite, pyrargyrite, freibergite, proustite); lead sulfide (galena); zinc sulfide (sphalerite); and copper sulfides (chalcopyrite and bornite). This paper aims to share Pe±olesÆs mineralogical and metallurgical information on the seven operations where the flotation process is used. Some basic conclusions are drawn from this analysis. Some of the information presented includes: types of orebodies, concentration processes, concentrator throughputs, head grades, concentrate grades and recoveries. Importantly, grind size and liberation values for the main mineral species are presented along with the relationships between sphalerite liberation and its recovery, and galena liberation and its recovery. Also included are three mineralogical case studies: maximisation of silver recovery at the Fresnillo mine producing a silver-zinc concentrate; options to improve gold recovery at the Tizapa mine; and sphalerite iron content for the different orebodies.

Rock mass classification systems have emerged as a powerful tool which can be used for assessing ground conditions and determining support requirements in underground mines. They should not be used as a substitute for complete engineering design, but rather as a supplement to observational methods and analytical study. In general, the use of rock mass classification is attractive, but each classification system has various deficiencies. Use of any particular system should be made only with knowledge of that systems limitations. It is desirable to employ a number of systems and design methods which will allow for comparison and lead to a better understanding of the rock mass condition.The Rock Mass Quality system (Q-System), developed by the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute, and the Rock Mass Rating (RMR) System, Bieniawski, were designed primarily for civil engineering structures. Laubscher et al (1978) further developed the RMR-system specifically for rock mechanics engineering in the mining industry. A method of stope design, which introduces a stability factor for the rock mass and compares this with hydraulic radius, was developed by Mathews et al (1981). This paper reviews the above systems by applying them to stability assessment of crown pillars in two Australian metal mines and provides a critical analysis of the various approaches. In particular each system will be analysed to determine its suitability for use in crown pillar design. The most suitable system(s) will form the basis for future development in crown pillar stability analysis.

Point load testing for irregular rock specimens was studied to determine the relationship between tensile and compressive strengths, drill penetration rate and other rotary drilling parameters. The DH-l type point load tester was developed and more than 2 000 irregular specimens of over 60 kinds of rock from 16 mines and quarries were tested. The effects of size, shape and number of samples on the point load strength index were investigated, using regression analysis. Experiments were carried out to investigate the relationship between point load strength index and uniaxial compressive strength on 29 kinds of rock. The relationship between these values and the drill penetration rate for rotary and percussion drills is discussed.

This paper describes MIM's experience in arranging and executing project financings for coal projects at Oaky Creek and Newlands and Collinsville and the port facility of Abbot Point.The financings had their origins in the late 1970's and culminated with the opening of these projects during 1983 and 1984.MIM's financing developments therefore span an important period in the development of resource projects in Australia.Resources projects have been growing in both scale and complexity of financing requirements.
