IN carrying out experiments to determine the amount of metal taken away by fume or fine dust the apparatus used requires to be strong and compact, as it is generaIIy necessary to work on a staging fixed at considerable distance above the ground and against a smoke stack or flue. It is essential that the test be carried out at a part of the stack welI away from any bends, to prevent eddies. The method described below has been used for estimating the dust losses from Dwight & Lloyd sintering machines, antimony drossing furnaces, pot sintering trials, etc., and has been founc! satisfaetory. It is welI to bear in mind that the longer the period over which dust coIIection is extended, the more valuable the result is likely to be. The rateof aspiration of the gases through the apparatus is kept as regular as possible by changing the filter thimbles frequently, and the rate of flow should correspond closely with the rate of flow of the gases up the stack.The apparatus required for carrying out a test is as folIows :-{a) Thermometers : two are required, one for taking the temperature of the gas in the stack and one for giving the temperature of the gas in the aspirating drum. Two tunnels are being bored using a æHydroshieldÆ in section 3.1 of the extension of the Underground railway line 5. At the end of the two tunnels, directly in front of the Hotel Adlon, the shields cannot be retrieved. The steel shell of the shield will be left in place within a sealed concrete block and the reusable components taken out through the completed tunnel. For the first time in Germany, an Underground tunnel is being lined solely by means of UNI rings. BerlinÆs Underground network is 165 km long and has 167 stations. Some 450 million passengers are transported annually. On account of the urban planning modifications that followed reunification, the network has to be adjusted, particularly in the city centre. The most significant project is the extension of the U5 from Alexanderplatz to the Lehrter Bahnhof. After completion, the U5 will be a continuous east-west traffic artery. It will provide a direct link with the new parliamentary and government district, open up new business districts and the cultural centre of the city.

While, in the past, a great deal of attention has been focussed on technical issues and the performance of explosives in rock, the explosive user, an essential link in the chain, has often been neglected. In the mining industry, too often, the benefits of excellent technical work have been degraded over time due to the lack of definitive and documented control. Using the principles of quality management a quality training system was developed and implemented for management of explosives use at Gunpowder Copper Ltd (GCL). This paper describes the structure of the system, its development and implementation, and contains practical advice and information for managers responsible for blasting and charge crews. The paper is in four parts: I Quality systems. A brief overview of the relevant aspects of total quality management that apply to explosives use. The requirements for documentation, management and auditing are explored. 2. Training for competency. The five essential elements of Competency Board Training (CBT) are examined, including auditing. 3. The Gunpowder Copper system. Implementation of the complete training system. Documentation and its control, auditing, instructions for operators, management responsibility and means of obtaining operator ownership are amongst the issues raised. Reporting requirements are the means to effectively manage change are described. 4. Summary. The paper concludes with the tangible benefits seen by Gunpowder Copper through the adoption of a quality training System.

Hydrogen and oxygen isotopic constraints on hydrothermal fluid composition from the Pliocene Boyongan and Bayugo porphyry copper-gold deposits (southern Philippines ) reveal mixing of magmatic and sea water reservoirs as the hydrothermal system evolved. Magmatic-equilibrated fluids (d18O: +8.3ë to +9.1ë; dD: -61ë to -51ë) are represented by hypersaline brines implicated in copper-gold transport and deposition. These dominate the fluid inclusion assemblage in early comb-quartz (unidirectional solidification textures), miarolitic quartz, and in K-silicate-stage quartz-K-feldspar ¦ biotite veins. Fluids responsible for post-K-silicate alteration assemblages of pyrite-clay (illite, pyrophyllite and kaolinite), alunite and smectite are represented by low-moderate salinity two-phase inclusions in co-existing quartz. These are interpreted as mixtures of evolved magmatic fluids (d18O dD: -42ë to -20ë) with evolved Pliocene sea water (d18O: + 4.0ë; dD: +4ë). The isotopic evidence for sea water involvement in the hydrothermal system suggests that porphyry emplacement and associated diatreme formation could have occurred in a submarine setting. The Kintyre uranium deposit was discovered in 1985 in the course of following up radio- metric anomalies generated in an earlier air- borne survey. The latter survey was conducted primarily to acquire aeromagnetic data for diamond exploration and the uranium discovery was made during a subsequent campaign of base- metal exploration. CRAE commitment to the Rudall area for a range of commodities over a period of 13 years made a significant contrib- ution to the discovery of Kintyre. Other con- tributing factors included CRAE's multicommod- ity approach to exploration, management support and continuity in the geological team. The Kintyre uranium deposit (Fig. 1) is located on the northern margin of the Rudall Metamorphic Complex, 60 kilometres south of Telfer and 260 kilometres north northeast of Newman, in the Paterson Province of northern Western Australia. It is 700 metres inside the northern boundary of the Rudall River National Park (15695 sq. km) and lies between the Great Sandy Desert and the Little Sandy Desert (Beard, 1969). Intense weathering since the Permian has produced a subdued landscape around the deposit. Resistant rock types still retain an older plateau surface but it is incised by more recent streams. Other Proterozoic and Permian rocks form low, sometimes rocky, areas largely covered by aeolian sand.

A novel method for determining viable cells of the mineral leaching bacterium Thiobacillus ferrooxidans has been developed. The cells were collected on 0.45/Lm cellulose acetate filters, washed with artificial minewater, and incubated in the presence of ferrous ion at pH3 in an atmosphere containing radioactive (14C) carbon dioxide. Colonies of bacterial growth were detected by the image formed on X-ray photographic paper (autoradiography). The method was compared with three conventional techniques and shown to detect three orders of magnitude more cells in cultures of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in the late exponential phase of growth.

The results of the process control improvement project aimed at improving the quality of Australian Bulk MineralsÆ (ABM) iron ore pellets produced by four vertical shaft furnaces are very positive. These results are achieved through process stabilisation and optimisation, improvement in process monitoring and taking early corrective actions when operating variables were outside the target ranges. A number of benefits are obtained from this project. These benefits include: More consistent and improved pellet quality. The average cold compression strength (CCS) value of pellets produced during the eight-month trial is 260 kg/pellet, which is 16 kg/pellet higher than that produced during the 12 months prior to the trial (244 kg/pellet). Reduction in the heat input by eight per cent, from 727 MJ/tonne to 668 MJ/tonne. Reduction in bentonite rate by six per cent, from 7.1 kg/tonne to 6.7 kg/tonne. Increase in the furnace throughput rate by four per cent and additional production of 10 000 tonnes per annum through process stabilisation. Better understanding of the process behaviour. This knowledge is valuable not only for setting the target operating conditions but also for developing the ABM expert system to control the process.

The Inquiry into the 1994 accident at Moura No. 2 Colliery included in it's findings that mine escape and rescue options for persons in underground coal mines were in need of review. The Inquiry recommended the establishment of industry working groups to report to the Queensland Chief Inspector of Coal Mines on matters including escape strategy and life support for escape from mines.One of these task groups examined issues relevant to self-escape from Australian underground coal mines and formulated recommendations and guidelines in response to the terms of reference and scope.

Major changes occurred in the management of loss prevention and risk management at operations in North and South America due to increased insurance premiums following the Olympic Dam fire in Australia in 2001. There are many different scenarios on how fires can develop and the estimated maximum losses (EML) those fires can incur. The EML is utilised by insurance companies to determine the cost of insurance premiums. The cost of insurance can be controlled at existing and newly designed solvent extraction (SX) plants by using risk reduction methods and design criteria to limit the fire exposure. A review of data collected during several loss prevention risk assessments can show how a budget can be protected from dramatically increased premiums and see which design of SX plant and fire protection standards best apply to your operations. The paper will investigate the pitfalls of existing materials of construction, capacity, geography, management practices, fire risk minimisation, and fire suppression systems. Intelligent engineering and managerial improvements implemented by the operations in the Americas in the past two years have further minimised the fire potential and benefited companies in insurance renewal negotiations.

The relative merits of treating coal by flotation and spiral concentrators have been examined by tests on run-of-plant fines samples from three seams in the Wittingham coal measures of the Upper Hunter Valley. Flotation of the complete fines was found to be the most metallurgically efficient process with yields substantially superior to those obtained from treatment of only the deslimed fines. A strict comparison between spirals and flotation for the treatment of the deslimed fines was impossible due to differences in product quality. However, the results indicated that the performance of a flotation circuit would be equivalent, and sometimes superior, to that of a spiral circuit.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. The Filbara region of northwestern Western Australia contains several known occurrences of mafic/ultramafic rock assemblages which may host platinum group element (POE) mineralisation. This paper deals with occurrences at Munni Munni and Andover. The Munni Munni complex is of particular interest because it is known to contain PGE mineralisation and is currently undergoing active exploration. The US/Australia Joint Scanner Project of October 1985 collected airborne scanner data for the BMR over Munni Munni. Such an ultramafic-mafic complex had not been previously researched with advanced remote sensing instrumentation. Extensive investigation of data from the NSOO1 (Thematic Mapper Simulator) scanner resulted in successful differentiation of gabbroic and ultramafic rocks, and also subdivision within the ultramafies. Similar differentiation could not be achieved using conventional Landsat MSS imagery and aerial photography. Encouraged by those results and in support of BMR field research into the mafic-ultramafic suites of the region, data from the Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) instrument were investigated to attempt differentiation of the ultramafic and mafic rocks in the Andover complex some 50 km to the northeast of Munni Munni.

One of the major changes in the resource industry in the nineties has been the re-internationalisation of the industry. The history of the resource business has been one of companies from the developed world utilising the cash flows from their operations to explore and develop mines in less developed regions of the world. This resource development has progressively generated wealth and economic development, which in turn, has led to a new generation of exploration and mining projects. In South America, Chile had led the way in a mining resurgence, now closely followed by Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela and Peru. Although Chile has long had a significant copper mining industry, the pre-nationalisation phase was driven by American capital; the current phase has been spearheaded by R.T.Z. - B.H.P. at Escondida with Canadian junior companies, in particular, providing major speculative impetus. The Australian junior companies have not been significant in South America.

The Northparkes copper-gold project is being developed in Central Western New South Wales approximately 30 km NNW of the town of Parkes and approximately 350 km west of Newcastle. The project is a joint venture between North Limited (80 per cent) and the Sumitomo Group (20 per cent). North is the manager. The basis of the project is three copper-gold orebodies, the northern two of which are being mined by conventional open cut methods with the third and largest orebody at the southern end of the lease to be mined by block caving. A fourth mineralised body has been identified in the centre of the lease. While further evaluation of this deposit is required it would appear to be amenable to block caving. Oxide caps of gold ore and copper-gold ore over-lie the two northern orebodies. Development commenced with the construction of a carbon-in-pulp (CIP) plant to treat the oxide gold ore. Construction of a flotation plant to treat oxide copper-gold ore and sulphide copper-gold ore is underway. When full-scale operation is achieved late in 1996 the plant will treat 5.0 million tonnes of ore per year of which 1.1 million tonnes will be open cut ore and 3.9 million tonnes will be block cave ore. In terms of annual ore tonnage the underground mine will be the largest metalliferous mine in New South Wales and the second largest in Australia.

Since early 1971 Western Titanium N.L. has been operating an ilmenite upgrading plant on a commercial basis at Capel, Western Australia. In their process ilmenite is pre- oxidized, then reduced in a rotary kiln to a mixture of metallic iron and titanium oxides. The iron is leached out by accelerated rusting in aerated water, leaving a product with titanium content, expressed as Ti02, of about 92%. Samples from different stages of the up- grading process, representing operations over the last two years, have been studied in detail by X-ray diffraction methods, and the sequences of phases and reactions occurring have been determined. Quantitative X-ray studies showed the ilmenite feed materials to consist of a mixture of ilmenite and pseudo- rutile. Pre-oxidation of the ilmenite at =1000¦C leads to the formation of rutile plus a Fe2TiO5-FeTi205-Mn2TiO5 solid solution. The final reduction product consisted of a mixture of metallic iron, reduced rutile and a FeTi05-MnTi205-Ti305 solid solution. The relative amounts of these reduction products were very sensitive to the initial concentra- tions of the minor constituents manganese and magnesium. The effects of variation of ilmenite feed rate, reducing atmosphere,- reduction temperature and controlled addition of magnesium were also studied.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal.

The general mechanism of recrystallisation for cold worked metal is well established, and need be only briefly summarised with a few references to recent articles which clarify minor points. The types of extension, whether by stretching, drawing, hammering, rolling, etc., do not alter the general principles (1), although quantitative results may differ somewhat, particularly with regard to differences between the surface and interior of samples.These principles can be summarised as follows: The first stage in annealing is a recovery (sometimes known as relaxation) of physical properties such as hardness, elongation, etc., without any appearance of recrystallisation; the second stage involves a further alteration in physical properties, accompanying the formation of new recrystallised grains which replace the original structure; a possible third stage involves an increase in the grain size of the completely recrystallised structure by absorption of smaller grains by larger ones. These three stages will be referred to as recovery, recrystallisation, and grain growth. Depending on conditions, the three stages may be clearly marked or may occur more or less simultaneously.For a given annealing temperature, cold deformations below a certain amount fail to give recrystallisation, and the final structure consists of the original grains which have recovered and possibly become more equiaxed. When a certain deformation, critical for that annealing temperature, is given, recrystallisation can occur, and will give the maximum recrystallised grain size.Increasing deformations beyond this give progressively smaller grain sizes.For each material there is a minimum recrystallisation temperature, below which recrystallisation will not occur whatever the deformation or time of annealing. For a given deformation there is a temperature, critical for that deformation, below which recrystallisation will not occur, and above which it will take place with increasing rapidity.

The Northern Mariana archipelago in the W.Pacific forms a classic intra-oceanic island arc system far from the influences of continental crust. As such it offers an ideal location in which to study many of the problems of subduction-related volcanism. Radiogenic (Sr, Pb, Nd and Hf) and stable (0, S and H) isotope systems have been applied to the question of the possible involvement of components from the subducting slab in arc magmagenesis. The results contrast with earlier studies based upon limited sample suites and suggest that fluids, derived from the slab and enriched in mobile elements, substantially modify the composition of the mantle wedge and contribute to the characteristic geochemistry of arc magmas. Trace element data, including the occurrence of negative Ce-anomalies in the lavas seem consistent with this conclusion. Major and trace element variations within the arc lavas can be modelled in terms of crystal fractionation of a gabbroic mineral assemblage and mixing calculations indicate that this has the approximate composition of PLAG:CPX:MAG:OLIV = 60:25:10:5. This observation is compatible with the widespread occurrence of gabbroic nodules in lavas throughout the arc. Consideration of Rare Earth Element and phenocryst data leads to the conclusion that many of the more basic lavas may be the products of cumulus enrichment. The results of this study constitute a model for magmatic processes occurring in simple island arc systems, and may be generally applicable to other, more complex settings. The recognition of a return flux of material with 'continental' affinity to the mantle, via sediments on the subducting slab, also places strong constraints on geochemical models of crust-mantle evolution.

South Africa is a semi arid, water scarce country that has undergone recent major political and social transformation. This transformation has ensured that water management has become a primary environmental concern in the South African mining industry, raising the status of water from an ancillary service to a fundamental factor in mine planning. The coal mining industry has been involved in the development of integrated catchment management plans since the late-1980s when a series of initiatives commenced in catchments where collieries operated. The plans focused attention on water supply and water demand management, the equitable access to water supplies, and intersectoral approaches to decision making, before the promulgation of new legislative and policy frameworks. Development of an integrated watershed management plan for the Olifants River basin, located in the Mpumalanga province, commenced in 1990. The Olifants River is an international river basin of 54 570 square kilometres and shared by South Africa and Mozambique. The upper watershed, locally called the Witbank Dam catchment, will be the focus of this paper. It has an area of 3400 square kilometres and is the major coal mining, power generating, and maize-growing region of the country. The processes embodied in the integrated watershed management plan had no formal guidelines but rather developed in an ongoing fashion over time. The plan commenced with a situation analysis involving the major stakeholders that identified principal technical shortfalls. These shortfalls were investigated under the guidance of multisectoral committees. The Olifants River Forum was started to extend awareness of the initiatives on an informal level throughout the whole watershed. The results of the investigations enabled water quality guidelines to be established for the upper catchment. To achieve the guideline levels additional initiatives were developed including a scheme to manage mine water discharges into the river system, the development of a standard four-step water management process, investigation and development of innovative mine water treatment processes, specifically sulfate reduction technologies, the use of gypsiferous mine water for irrigation, river and dam hydrological models, groundwater models and biomonitoring. Significant outcomes from the process have been achieved including the improvement in water quality in the Witbank Dam catchment. Equally significant have been the development of partnerships between businesses and between businesses and the community specifically in the use of mine water for irrigation. The plan realised a number of requirements for success including, the development of trust, openness and transparency with information, the essential need for consultation and negotiation and the involvement of third parties to validate information. The future still holds the potential for disputes between upstream and downstream water users but understanding, transparency and accountability between all players have, and will in future, enable the matching of the increasing demands on a scarce water resource to the needs of all.

The core of the problem of sustaining steady growth at this or a similar rate is to ensure regular flows of investment. This sustains productivity, helps to control balance of payments pressures, and to check inflation. 3. The regular intake of human and physical resources, in conjunction with intensive capital development involving finance, technology and management, is basic to sustaining the growth rate and ensuring rising standards of living.
