Western Deep Levels, a seismically active deep level told mine. stalled placing backfill in their narrow tabular workings as part of the regional support strategy in 1986. Over the years the percentage of working places being backfilled has been gradually increasing. At the end of 1995 the support efficiency and the labour productiveness relating to support installation were scrutinised to determine if resources were being optimised. Owing to financial, safety and productivity constraints it was decided to redesign stope support to be less labour intensive, safer and provide an integrated stope support system. This new integrated system will thus combine the previously used temporary, permanent and back area support consisting of mechanical props, hydraulic props and backfill respectively. Backfill previously formed an integral part of the regional support in conjunction with strike stabilising pillars. To design the integrated support system the backfill placement quality has to be exceptionally good and placement must be done as close as possible to the working face. The backfill to face distance was reduced by 30 per cent and in some areas by more than 50 per cent with an increase of square metres filled to increase the effect of the backfill even more. In 1990, the Queensland mining industry had come to the conclusion that new safety and health legislation based on risk identification and control was required if the mining industry was to be effectively and efficiently regulated. In particular stakeholders in the coal mining industry had arrived at this opinion after the industry had suffered a number of major underground explosions over the 14-year period between 1972 and 1986. Also by 1990, a general consensus had emerged across both the coal and metalliferous mining sectors that mining industry was over regulated and, more to the point this over regulation did not encourage industry to identify and address the underlying causes that had led to a cycle of major mining accidents in the state. The prevailing opinion was that the prescriptive legislation left the ownership of risk management with the regulator and not with the mine operator. This paper discusses the background to the development of the Queensland Coal Mining Safety and Health Act 1999 and the Mining and Quarrying Safety and Health Act 1999 and the progress made in improving safety and health since the statutes came into force on the 16 March 2001. The paper discusses the issues that had to be addressed during the development of the legislation including the interaction with other legislation based on based on risk management principles that either overly or interface with the mining legislation. The effect the underground explosion at Moura No 2 in 1994 had on the final content of the new legislation is also considered. Health is often the neglected twin of safety and health legislation and the paper previews the health surveillance system being proposed in Queensland to ensure that health of mine and quarry workers is afforded the same priority as their safety. By increasing the structured management of occupational health problems in our mines there is an opportunity to make significant improvements in mine safety In conclusion the paper reviews the results to date since the introduction of the new mining safety and health legislation in Queensland on the 16 March 2001. Progress has been made and more is yet to be achieved

Planning for flooding and assessment of flood impacts are important requirements for mining projects, as they are also for other types of development. With more intense development and concern from the community, supported by government regulatory requirements, assessment of flood concerns and impacts has become of increasing importance. To ensure that flooding issues are fully understood and results presented in an appropriate format, advanced hydraulic analysis procedures have been developed and are beginning to be applied. These procedures must be rigorous in an engineering context but the results must also be readily understood by the community and government agencies. Advanced two-dimensional hydraulic modelling is becoming accepted as an important means of assessing flooding issues for mining projects. With presentation of results from hydraulic models with Geographic Information Systems (GIS), flood impacts can be analysed rigorously and presented clearly. This paper discusses the application of advanced hydraulic modelling in the planning and impact assessment of a major mining project located on a floodplain where there is extensive inundation. The analysis provides for both input to the planning of the project and for detailed assessment of potential impacts. This case study illustrates some important aspects of the application of hydraulic modelling using a two-dimensional modelling to a critical flood design.

The McArthur, Balma (new name) and Habgood Groups are thick (up to 4.5 km) correlative sequences of shallow water evaporitic carbonates, mudstones and sandstones that are exposed largely within the Batten, and southern and northern Walker Fault Zones (Batten and Walker Troughs) of the McArthur Basin respectively. Recent re-mapping of the Walker Fault Zone has provided data for refined stratigraphic correlations between these groups. Two significant hiatuses are now recognised within the Balma Group (base of Vaughton Siltstone and base of Yarrawirrie Formation) and these may represent tectonically-generated sequence boundaries which may correlate with similar local hiatuses within the McArthur Group such as at the base of the Teena Dolomite and Lynott Formation respectively.

This paper discusses the considerations for optimum maintenance of critical ore handling infrastructure in order to minimise the cost to the business of maintenance periods. As maintenance periods are a direct interruption to production, time is of the essence and careful management of shutdown periods is essential. The ore pass systems currently in use at Xstrata Copper û Mount Isa Copper Operations are up to 30 years old and have had significant wear over the years. The maintenance of these passes and their brows and chutes in a production situation is a challenge as it can potentially expose personnel to high risk situations in addition to the production interruptions. Some alternatives for mitigating the risk of working in ore passes including plugging and ballooning are described. Criteria are included for selecting a method for the safe entry into a given ore pass. Experience in adapting the method of ore pass plugs and some lessons learnt in the process are also discussed.

As valuable minerals are more disseminated, there is a need for low-grade ores to be finely ground to liberate these valuable minerals. However, this has a negative impact on ultrafine mineral recovery as conventional separations processes such as gravity separation are no longer effective. Instead, fine particles can be recovered by froth flotation. Various novel reagents have been introduced along with development in flotation cell designs such as Jameson cell and column cells to improve performance and recovery of ultrafine valuables. This study, on the other hand, aims to recover the fines using a combination of commercially available reagents to selectively flocculate the valuables, so they are large enough to be recovered via conventional froth flotation cells. This technique if successful can be implemented in many existing industries that continue to use mechanical flotation cells that require particle sizes to be 50–150 μm for effective recovery (Ralston, 1992; Batterham and Moodie, 2005). Selective flocculation is not widely implemented in industries mainly due to the inability to float the aggregates ones they are formed and gangue entrapment within the aggregates which consequently affects the grade of concentrate recovered (Forbes, 2011). The major goal is to aggregate the minerals and float the aggregates unlike the more common industrial technique such as reverse flotation of hematite, where the aggregates itself is not recovered via flotation.

The Central Victorian Goldfield is a world-class field located in Victoria, Australia. It is currently undergoing a revival through activities in the Bendigo, Ballarat, Tarnagulla, Maldon, Castlemaine and other fields. Sediment-hosted auriferous gold-quartz reefs that are structurally and geometrically complex dominate the region. To date, no remote methods have been developed to assist in the targeting of the discrete high-grade oreshoots that characterise the mineralisation. An understanding of the structural setting and controls, and thus likely frequency of repetition of oreshoots remains the main exploration tool. Gold within the reefs is generally characterised by both its coarse nature (>100 up to 10 000 microns) and erratic distribution; as a result, most of the Victorian deposits are classed as high- to extreme-nugget effect systems. This characteristic ensures that mineralisation is very challenging to explore, evaluate and exploit. The key issues facing the explorer and miner are related to effective sampling, and definition of geological and grade continuity, and ultimately grade and tonnage. Tonnage can often be estimated to a reasonable level of confidence, whereas the grade estimate generally carries a medium- to high-level of uncertainty. In these deposits, surface diamond drilling alone is generally only able to define an Inferred Mineral Resource, with underground development, closely spaced in-fill drilling and bulk sampling/trial mining required to define Ore Reserves. The extraction of gold from ores is relatively simple, based on the coarse nature and hence amenability to gravity recovery. Ground conditions and the need for in-stope grade control (eg mapping, sampling etc), generally point toward mechanised cut-and-fill as the primary stoping method in the region. To potential investors this style of mineralisation has been viewed as high risk, because of the associated low confidence in the grade estimate, general paucity of Ore Reserves at mining start-up and need for underground development at the Feasibility Stage.

Construction of the Ranger uranium project located 230 kiss east of Darwin in the Northern Territory commenced in January 1979. Energy Resources of Australia Ltd (ERA) was incorporated in February 1980 to acquire all the rights in the project. The total cost to ERA of these rights was $407 million, made up of $125 million in cash to the Federal Govern- ment and the issue of 125 million $1.00 shares at par, plus a payment of $16 million in cash to each of Peko-Wallsend Ltd (Peko) and EZ Industries Ltd (EZ).

Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact between a basement dome of high grade metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite sequence. This contact was originally a thrust fault which has since become a decollement zone for gravity sliding in association with basement doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in which fluids were channelled up the decollement with boiling of those fluids causing hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that the upper levels of the system are exposed.

One of the problems with mining projects is the setting of the design criteria that will best match the requirements. Normally this is expressed in economic terms but can be other factors. With massive orebodies these problems are often compounded by the general lack of distinct mining boundaries. A technique using evaluation surfaces was developed at Palabora for the underground mine design. This technique has subsequently been applied on several other mining projects to assist in the determination of the design criteria. This paper discusses the method, illustrated by some of the results of these studies.

In the new refinery, at the works of the Broken Hill Associated Smelters Proprietary Limited, situated at Port Pirie, South Australia, the refining routine is similar to that carried on in the old one in that bullion is progressively refined first for arsenic and antimony, then for copper and gold, then for silver, and finally for zinc. However, actual procedure differs in that each refining operation is now conducted continuously, whereas in the old refinery intermittent batch treatment was practised.The early experimental work was concerned solely with the development of the continuous desilverising process, which, in addition to continuous treatment, embraces the novel feature of conjugate solution formation with consequent production of a silver product relatively high in silver and low in lead.

This paper presents updated interpretations of controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and highlights structural features that influence the geometry of mineralisation domains used in resource estimation. The Area C mining lease is located in the central Hamersley Province, ~100 km WNW of Newman, Western Australia, and contains resources of approximately 1100 Mt of Marra Mamba and Brockman iron mineralisation. C Deposit is located within Area C, on the northern limb of the Weeli Wolli anticline, and mineralisation is hosted predominantly in the Mt Newman Member of the Marra Mamba Formation. Production from C Deposit began in August 2003, following mining of a 950 000 tonne bulk sample in 2002. Recent mapping in the bulk-sample pit and updated interpretations by BHP Billiton geologists have highlighted the significance of structural controls on mineralisation in C Deposit and their influence on the thickness of mineralisation, which ranges from 20 to 80 metres. Structural controls on the geometry and continuity of mineralised domains include south-dipping thrust faults that developed along the Mount Newman/West Angela contact, folds associated with thrust fault development, steeply dipping stratigraphic contacts in the hanging wall of the thrust faults, and gently north-dipping stratigraphic contacts. Thrust faults and folds in C Deposit are significant for two main reasons: their formation resulted in the thickening of the main ore-hosting units in the Mount Newman Member; and faults and folded stratigraphic contacts provided conduits for supergene metasomatic-enrichment processes that produce high-grade iron mineralisation.The implications of this interpretation for the definition of the resource estimation domains are discussed, and suggestions are made for a better integration of geology into the data acquisition and estimation process.

A variety of algorithms and methods are being used by the mining industry today to map mineral resource for reserve estimation. The traditional methods including Polygonal, Sectional and Inverse Distance methods are relatively easy to understand and implement. They have served industry well for several decades and should continue to do so for the large bulk mineable deposits with very regular geometries with relatively small variation in grade.

I feel a little like the Parson delivering his Sunday Sermon, chastizing his parishioners for not coming to Church. Those who need to hear me are absent.Nevertheless, I hope that if you agree with what I am about to say you will go forth and spread the word.We often hear of the impact mining has on the community. I prefer tonight to deal with the impact some community attitudes have on mining, and I want to point out that the results of these attitudes rebound to the detriment of our society. I want to deal particularly with regulation, taxation, and proflts.In a civilization whose standard of living is essentially dependent on an adequate and reliable supply of cheap metals and fuels, it should be evident to Blind Freddie that mining must be encouraged.I must express concern at the constraints inflicted on the mining industry by our community. We tend to blame Government for our difficulties, but we must recognize that Government acts merely as agent for the community. It is fair to say that in a free society, if Government actions do not reflect the demands of the electorate, then it doesn't stay the Government. It is important though for Government, in framing its policies, to ensure that it is not unduly influenced by the loud voices of minority groups.The people of our nation have every right to demand that our industry meet certain criteria to be allowed to operate. We all wish to live in a healthy and congenial environment, and to have our individual comforts protected. It is essential, however, that the community realizes that its demands on the mining industry are affecting Australia's prosperity.Each new regulation and each new tax or impost has its effect on investment, employment, and national revenue. Restraints result in an increase in costs which in turn raises the minimum value of a mineral deposit which is economically mineable. It results in minerals, which could be mined under more favourable circumstances, remaining in the ground, perhaps lost for ever.

There is a well-known saying, variously attributed to the great King Solomon and other sages of antiquity, to the effect that 'there is nothing new under the sun'. The inventive genius of man, as far as it is personified in the metallurgist, has often had the truth of this statement poignantly brought to mind when investigating the priority of ideas in its own particular branch of science. Not infrequently some operation, at first inilocently taken for a novel procedure, has later been found to have had an irrefutable precedent in the more or less remote past.When confronted by a question of this kind the metallurgist can generally much simplify his search if he at once turns his scrutinising gaze towards that ancient home of metallurgy, Germany. Vast departments of the smelting art have originated there, and even when Germany has not been in position to claim priority of invention, it has at least been characterised by a distinction equally as worthy - ie that of the faithful and authoritative exposition of the theoretical grounds on which the invention rests.In the present instance, in endeavouring to trace the history of pyritic smelting, the writer has naturally turned in the abovementioned direction, and not without some result, although the recorded data are, as might have been expected, meagre. A complete history of the art of beneflciating ores by means of fire, in all its many ramifications, still remains to be written. Possibly it may never be written, for the extent of the subject is tremendous. It is even practically impossible to clearly trace the development of one of its most modest sub-branches in satisfactory detail, or to present that branch without going to a considerable extent into related matters of a merely general character. For the purpose of dealing with the subject it will be convenient to divide it into two concurrent heads, and to distinguish, for historical reasons as well as for metallurgical ones, between that branch of the general method of matte smelting, which, until about 1891, has been called 'pyritic smelting', and the more recent offshoot of the latter, which, by distinction, may be called 'pyrite smelting'. The nature of pyritic smelting was clearly defmed by Dr John Percy in 1880, and his interpretation3 may be accepted as well known. To recall the characteristics of the method we may perhaps paraphrase Dr Percy's meaning by describing the process as a special method for the smelting of lean or dry silver or gold ores, which do not contain sufficient lead or copper for these metals to act conveniently as collectors of the precious metals. The operation is conducted in a blast furnace, with an amount of carbonaceous fuel sufficing to produce an exclusively reducing atmosphere, and with the addition of pyrites, in order to form a regulus in which the precious metals shall be concentrated, the pyrites themselves being either argentiferous, auriferous, or cupriferous, or any combination of these three, or wholly barren of metal values. In the common acceptation of the term, it is understood that the use of the reverberatory furnace is excluded.

A new national-scale geochemical survey is under way inAustralia with the aim to provide energy and mineral explorers with state-of-the-art precompetitive data and information about the continentÆs potential resources. This low-density geochemical survey will provide a national geochemical data layer using consistent sampling medium and sampling, preparation and analytical methods. Large-scale geochemical patterns thus revealed are expected to point to new areas of exploration potential. The project is funded under the Onshore Energy Security Program. It is hoped that this new national geoscience dataset will help make Australia a more attractive destination for energy and mineral exploration investments. THIS paper is not intended to be a detailed description of the lead, smelting plant at Cockle Creek, as this has been covered in previous papers for the Institute in 1918, Proceedings No. 31, by other members of the staff; but the idea is to give some of the practices and conditions peculiar to these works, also to give some experiments carried out and the conclusions arrived at. Unfortunately, owing to the closing down of the smelting and refinery plant at these works, sone of the experiments could not be carried to a more definite and commercial basis, but they are given in the hope that they may be of interest to members, and may perhaps suggest further thought along the lines indicated.ROASTING AND SINTERINGThe greater part of the ore treated at these works came from the Central mine, Broken Hill, but, in addition, a large quantity was purchased from other parts of New South Wales and from Tasmania. This purchased ore was seldom received in the form of a concentrate, but initially in its crude state, and therefore had to be crushed. The Wellington Dam catchment has high value water, agriculture and coal and power generating resources. These conflicting land uses are managed through consultation and regulation. The Wellington Dam catchment is unique in that the Collie Coal Basin is located almost to the edge of the dam and has coal mining and power generation as its primary land use. Currently the dam is only used for irrigation due to its high salinity. The State Government has committed to reduce the damÆs salt levels to below 600 mg/L by 2015 so that it can be considered for public drinking water supply. The coal industry in conjunction with the community and State Government has worked together to enhance the water quality within the Wellington Dam to maximise its value and use by using mine dewater for industry, diverting saline Collie River flows, providing environmental (social) flows and enhancing water quality of mine voids to encourage new industry to the Collie Region. Both surface and groundwater in the coal basin are generally fresh, whereas the salinity in the Collie River East Branch generally ranges between 3000 to 20 000 mg/L and 1700 to 10 000 mg/L in the South Branch. Mine dewatering is currently two to three times greater than the recharge to the coal basin. As a result, all mine dewater is sent to power stations in the area, with excess discharged into drainage lines which flow into the South Branch of the Collie River. To maintain environmental and social flows some groundwater is also pumped to the South and East Branches of the Collie River during summer months. Completed mine voids are used for recreation and options for aquaculture are promising. However, handback criteria are yet to be finalised.

In mining, grade control generally focuses on blasthole sampling and the estimation of ore control block models with little or no attention given to how the materials are being excavated from the ground. In the process of loading trucks, the underlying variability of the individual bucket load will determine the variability of truck payload. Hence, accurate material movement demands a good knowledge of the excavation process and the buckets’ interaction with the environment. However, equipment frequently goes into off-nominal states due to unexpected delays, disturbances or faults. The large amount of such disturbances causes information loss that reduces the statistical power and biases estimates, leading to increased uncertainty in the production. A reliable method that inferences the missing knowledge about the interaction between the machine and the environment from the available data sources, is vital to accurately model the material movement. In this study, a twostep method was implemented that performed unsupervised clustering and then predicted the missing information. The first method is Density-based spatial clustering of applications with noise (DBSCAN) based spatial clustering which divides the diggers’ and buckets’ positional data into connected loading segments. Clear patterns of segmented bucket dig positions were observed. The second model utilised Gaussian process regression which was trained with the clustered data and the model was then used to infer the mean locations of the test clusters. Bucket dig locations were then simulated at the inferred mean locations for different durations and compared against the known bucket dig locations. This method was tested at an open pit mine in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The experimental results demonstrate the advantage of the proposed method in inferencing the missing information of bucket-environment interactions and therefore enables miners to continuously track the material movement.

The perception of New Zealand as an exploration destination has improved compared with other countries. There has been a realisation that New Zealand's potential is greater than previously thought. Other countries are not as attractive as before, and explorers are looking at alternatives that are geologically prospective and politically stable.   New Zealand is regarded as geologically prospective, especially for gold, with potential for world class deposits. It is also prospective for other metals, coal and industrial minerals. New Zealand is politically stable, and has an economy that is attractive to overseas investors. It is one of the least corrupt countries in the world, which overseas companies see as providing a high degree of certainty for investment.   New Zealand has good opportunities for investment in gold exploration at present. Otago has been the focus for new companies and is the favoured exploration location. Otago is regarded as very prospective, and hosts New Zealand's largest gold deposit at Macraes. There is potential for other similar deposits elsewhere in Otago.   The mineral industry previously had an excessively pessimistic view of New Zealand, which has resulted in little new investment in New Zealand for some years. Previous pessimism is turning to optimism, and there is increasing interest in New Zealand as an exploration destination by overseas explorers.
