Activity of FeO in the ternary system MgO-FeO-CaO in contact with metallic iron has been measured at 1000 K employing the cell.PtIFe, (Mg, Fe, Ca)OIZr02 - CaOIFe, FeOlPt. Measured data are used to study the phase stability relations in the system MgO-FeO-CaO and an isothermal section at 1000 K through this system is drawn.

Good morning and thank you for the opportunity to address this yearÆs New Zealand Minerals Conference.   As you have already heard from the Associate Minister of Energy, the Government believes that the minerals industry is an important part of our economy. In particular, our coal and lignite resources have the potential to play an important role in New ZealandÆs energy sector as both a primary fuel and as a means to produce electricity.   The Government has taken a keen interest in the primary fuel sector given the declining reserves of natural gas sector. The energy sector is a key driver of economic growth and it is therefore critical that we have a reliable supply of primary fuel as part of the energy mix.   In a global sense, New Zealand is like many other countries regarding the need to secure energy for the future. Natural gas will be a key bridging fuel in the transition from an energy market based on fossil fuels to one based on renewables over the next century.   However, natural gas as a solution to this energy transition has some pragmatic limitations for New Zealand. There is uncertainty as to when new domestic reserves of gas can be discovered and developed. And the alternative of imported LNG poses a number of costs and risks to the economy.   New ZealandÆs coal resources are vast-estimated to be enough to last hundreds of years at the current rate of extraction. The main question is can extraction be increased and sustained to meet the demand of domestic power producers and at the same time meet commitments to lucrative international markets?   At this point it is appropriate for me to place coal into context with Governments overarching policy objectives for energy. The Government has stated objectives for the energy sector emphasising energy efficiency and an increased focus of renewable energy, while still ensuring security of supply and certainty as to energy costs and risk. Coal certainly can make a contribution to these objectives going forward.

The Northern Cape Province of South Africa is host to the Kalahari Manganese Field (KMF). The northern portion of the KMF hosts high-grade manganese referred to as Wessels’ type ore and is mined mostly from underground operations. WorleyParsons TWP is currently involved with the development of a ventilation shaft for one of these mines. The main challenge is to develop through the unconsolidated Kalahari material and weathered portion of the Karoo formation. These formations are preserved very erratically over short distances. A lack of understanding of the unique challenges presented for developing shafts in this area has resulted in the failed development of a shaft on an adjacent property and over-expended budgets on others.The renowned red sand of the Kalahari forms the top several tens of metres and overlies a horizon of gravels and calcrete that pose seasonally variable water ingress problems. A very stiff red clay horizon is then intersected. The Red Clay is prone to swellling during excavation and has been the main stumbling block on previous constructions. The standard approach has been to develop non-stop through this layer. The red clay is underlain by another horizon of calcrete, gravel and conglomerate that marks the bottom of the formation. The top of the Dwyka Tillite (Karoo Formation) is usually highly weathered and has a distinctive yellow colour. The weathered tillite is highly susceptible to drying and becomes friable. At reef-intersection, the combination of subhorizontal bedding and joints with the dominant subvertical faulting results in potential wedge failures in the manganese and ironstone units.This paper describes the geotechnical issues identified during the planning of the ventilation shaft and the risks associated with development through the Kalahari and weathered Karoo Formations. A new approach to developing ventilation shafts in overcoming these challenges is recommended.CITATION:Steenkamp, N C, 2014. The early period of South Australia's mining history was dominated by Cornishmen as large numbers of miners and their families migrated to escape closure of the Cornish copper mines. Records show that Carthew families migrated from Kent and Cornwall to South Australia. Those from Redruth, Cornwall, were miners and their family history provides an insight into the condi- tions under which early miners lived and worked. Carthews are one of the oldest surviving mining families in South Australia and their movement pattern has been typical of many other early Cor- nish mining families.

The proportion of coal production from underground operations in Queensland, is likely to increase in the future. A portion of this increase will come from mines working under farming areas. The degree of compatibility between underground coal mining operations and farming is examined. Two case histories are considered in detail. These relate to farming areas in the Moura and Emerald districts. Mining the Moura, area has been undertaken for the last two and half decades, while in the Emerald area, large scale underground coal mining is currently being planned. Interference to watercourses and water harvesting programmes, damage to crops, and ponding in cultivated areas have been experienced in mining areas. With expansion of underground mining in farming areas, the principle areas of likely conflict are the effects of surface subsidence on irrigation and erosion control structures. Other potential problems that may arise in particular circumstances include reduction in availability of water for harvesting, pollution, surface cracking and damage to surface structures. Finely textured soils and erratic and violent rainfall patterns make farming in central Queensland particularly vulnerable to severe soil erosion unless strict precautions are taken. Soil erosion control is an essential part of farming. Contour banks are used to ensure that runoff velocities are suitably low. Where steep slopes are encountered, grassing is the most effective way to prevent erosion.

In the recent years several new blasting technologies have come into use in surface mines. Electronic initiation, low-density emulsion explosives and modelling software are in regular use throughout the world. In Australia, these new technologies have achieved significant application, largely in open cut coal mines where more than 20 per cent of blasting is now conducted with electronic initiation systems. These new techniques have contributed to the vast improvement in blasting outcomes evidenced by increased recovery of saleable product and faster excavation rates. In large surface mines, OricaÆs unique combination of electronic initiation systems, bulk emulsion explosives and modelling software can be harnessed to target critical value outcomes. This includes targeting better fragmentation, increased ore uncovery rates and better wall stability û all adding to improved mining operation profitability. Orica Mining Services have combined these technologies into a set of offerings called Blast Based Services (BBSÖ). The paper describes applications of these new technologies and possible benefits in large surface mines.

A simple gravimetric procedure was developed for the rapid determination of carbon dioxide in coal mine roadway dust samples and the result is used for the subsequent calculation of incombustible matter contentaccording to the requirements of the Queensland Coal Mining Act. The carbon dioxide is determined through loss of mass by a semi-enclosed apparatus, following room-temper.ature hydrochloric acid attack on the sample.With a sample containing 36 per cent carbon dioxide, the achieved standard deviation (ls) of 0·3 per cent CO. is adequate for coal mine roadway dust analysis.This simple procedure enables relatively unskilled labour in mine laboratories, to analyze coal mine roadway dust samples in accordance with the Act. Some 50 analyses can be achieved per day compared with 8 by the Australian Standard Method for coal.

IT will be noticed, from the following contributed papers on the various plant, what an infinite number of parts are required to be kept in active operation in order to derive a resultant product of commercial value from the ores and materials received at the works. Crude ores and concentrates, in every degree of complex structure and resistance to treatment, are arriving daily from near and distant places, moreover their metallic contents are so varied that an outsider, unacquainted with the operations, would naturally wonder how it is possible that the rare elements are to be sorted out and classified into their true order, to meet industrial requirements.The proposition is necessarily not a simple one and owners of mining properties have naturally refrained from smelting their complex ores on account of the technical difficulties of attaining high efficiency and recovery of the metals, where limitations are imposed in procuring a variation of ores that lead to the best smelting and refinmg result. This difficulty obviously imposes many disabilities on the smelter, who is prepared to accept all such complex ores, and it may be said that were therenot available a large weekly supply of lead concentrates from the company's own mine at Broken Hill, of standard quality, much of the material being treated in the world today would certainly not be marketable.In order to sustain full efficiency, each section of the works must maintain its.true balance and synchronize with the requirements of such other departments as are dependent on its partially treated materials. This harmony of operations is not only imperative as regards tonnage output, but also relies on the condition of the resultant treatment by each plant, no large variations being permissible.The various officers are, therefore, dependent on one another to keep the order of the operations flowing regularly. During the processing of gold, effluents that are discharged into the tailing dams contain free cyanide, metal cyanide complexes of zinc, copper, iron, etc and their oxidised products such as ammonia, cyanate and thiocyanate. A knowledge of how different cyanides behave in the solution is vital to metallurgists working in the area of cyanide waste treatment. Although the free cyanide ion is not stable in aqueous solutions and is expected to degrade in a natural environment by atmospheric oxidation, the metal cyanide complexes, especially of iron, are very stable. The CHEMIX program from the THERMODATA package, developed by the CSIRO Division of Mineral Products, was used to evaluate various copper-cyanide and iron-cyanide systems. The simulation of these systems show how the free cyanide and cyanide complexes behave at different conditions of solution composition and acidity (pH).

It is not often that mines have as much warning of the approach of bad ground conditions as was the case at the Western Mining Corporation, Kambalda Nickel Operations Lafranchi/Schmitz Decline. Most aspects of this operation are in fact quite unique and like the best solutions, the answer to the problem of weak and foliated ground conditions was relatively simple; requiring the use of readily available explosives although the idea of using it in this manner may not be the most obvious.The use of high shock energy POWERGEL 2131 cartridges proved to be the correct answer, in conjunction with small changes in drill pattern design. The resulting lack of overbreak bears testimony to the success of the concept and the commitment of the miners to achieving a safe working environment.

The New Zealand Mines Rescue Brigade was established as a result of the Dobson mine disaster on 3rd December 1926, when 9 men lost their lives. Prior to this, there had been four major disasters in New Zealand coalmines, with a total of 145 fatalities. Only large-scale events such as explosions or major fires were considered reportable. Until and including the Dobson disaster, no mine emergency response facilities or organisation was in place.   Unfortunately, over the next five decades the establishment of a Mines Rescue Service did not mean that disasters involving multiple fatalities ceased. The coal mining industry continued to suffer the consequences of poor mining practice, inadequate or inappropriate monitoring and management, and sometimes complete disregard for the regulatory requirements current at the time.   The role of Mines Rescue has been defined in statute, and regulated by Coal Mines (Mine Management and Safety) Regulations. Currently, the statutory obligations have been under the Mines Rescue Trust Act 1992.   The Mines Rescue Brigade historically, has primarily been a reactive service, with stations and facilities established to train brigadesmen in emergency response procedures, specifically to mobilise in the event of a call-out at any one of the many coalmines operating within each stationÆs area of jurisdiction.   Over the last ten years, this role has changed. The service has adopted a proactive approach to emergency response, and has established a close liaison with all mining and tunnelling operations throughout industry, both underground and surface. The objectives have become emergency prevention focussed, and the service has incorporated a range of theoretical and practical training, simulated exercises, more sophisticated equipment and techniques, and a desire to ensure that emergency response capabilities are not needed, whilst maintaining the traditional and statutory obligation to respond if they are needed.

A bewildering array of process control instrumentation is currently available for mineral processing plants. For sequencing control, special purpose microprocessors or the process control computer can be used. Where continuous control is required, then the choice is between pneumatic controllers, electronic controllers, shared display micro- processor systems and direct digital control. The benefits of each system are discussed and the advantages of using direct digital control in mineral processing plants are outlined. The factors which need to be considered when selecting control systems for new plants are listed. Instrumentation systems designed by Fluor Australia are used as case studies to illustrate the selection process. For established plants, conversion to direct digital can be advantageous, and case studies are given. However, replacement of existing systems requires justification based on a productivity improvement which will allow the control equipment to be paid for within a specific time period. The Circum-Pacific area is one of the most important gigantic skarn-metallogenic belts in the world. In more than 20 coastwise countries of this region, there exist thousands skarn deposits of different types. According to the differences of major metallic elements, the skarn deposits may be classified into seven subtypes, i.e. Fe, Cu, Pb-Zn, W, Sn, Mo and Au skarn deposits. In this paper, the distribution. and geological characteristics of above-mentioned types of skarn deposits are described briefly. Skarn deposits may also be classified on the basis of the dominant calc(magnesian)-silicate mineral assemblages into four types: magnesian, calcic, manganoan, and alkaline skarn types. Magnesian skarns may be associated with Fe, Cu, Au,, Sn, B, Be mineralization, calcic skarns with Fe, Cu, W, Mo, An, Be, Pb, Zn, Sn minerailization, while the alkaline skarns occur in U(Th, Nb) deposits. The skarn deposits of both East and West Pacific rims have many general characters, but have some diferences in geotectonic settings, intensities of mineralization, distribution, and metallogenic epoches. In this paper, the minerogenetic series and the mineralizing specialities of related magmatic rocks of the skarn deposits are also discussed.

This paper documents the selection, installation and performance of six, seventeen cubic metre, Dorr-Oliver flotation cells for primary zinc flotation at the North Mine in Broken Hill. The cells were installed to replace fifty, small cells, and despite initial design problems, have per- formed satisfactorily.

Gold deportment and ore characterisation studies are key tools in gaining an appropriate understanding of complex gold ores for process development and optimisation. These studies have historically involved imprecise chemical methods with slow and costly optical microscopy for gold identification. The traditional approach requires highly skilled petrographers, is prone to human error, and is not scalable, reducing the usefulness in practical analysis. The proposed methodology utilises a decision tree and knowledge base in a staged approach to gold ore characterisation, building up progressively more detailed information about the sample mineralogy, gold deportment and key mineral properties, as the process is followed. Whilst the automated QEMSCAN« system is used for mineral and gold identification, interactive and focused data analyses are used to give more efficient and accurate results. This is complemented by smart sample preparation and chemical methods to enhance and validate the data, making the staged approach methodology reliable, scalable and therefore practical and economical.

The valuation of resources companies is open to a huge amount of subjectivity. Not only are valuations subject to fast changing assumptions, such as commodity prices, exchange rates, ore grades, etc., but there is also no common agreement on the methodology to be used. To borrow from Malcolm Fraser, life wasn't meant to be easy for the resource company valuer. I will demonstrate three recent examples of valuations carried out but where the market or actual transactions done show very different results.

The term "joint venture" lacks any precise legal definition but is typically used to denote a form of legal relationship which is neither a partnership nor a corporation. Nbst joint ventures are contractual relationships which provide for the sharing of mining leases and production facilities and for the sharing of costs, but which enable each joint venturer to carry on his own separate business. The rationale for such relationships is that each participant: retains independent taxation status may independently grant direct security over his interest in the project assets for financing purposes Bankers prefer to lend to incorporated joint ventures (i.e. corporations in which all of the joint venturers are shareholders) but will lend to individual joint venturers provided the joint venture agreement does not imperil their security; i.e. provided there is a "bankable" joint venture. The carpeting objectives of joint venturers and their bankers may be reconciled and unnecessary conflict avoided by the timely inclusion of appropriate provisions in the joint venture agreement before financing negotiations commence.

Hilton Mine is located 20 km north of the city of Mount Isa and Isa Mine in far north west Queensland. The sealed road used by the 500 employees to commute from the city is part of the Barkly Highway linking Mt Isa to the Northern Territory.Although discovered in 1947, major underground development did not start until late-1982 and first cut-and-fill production in mid-1987. The J53 exploration shaft was sunk in 1970-73 and the main P49 shaft in 1973-75. Since January 1990, most of Hilton ore production has been treated in the Hilton Concentrator, and concentrates trucked in slurry tankers to Isa for smelting or shipping.

The control of industrial grinding circuits in Australian concentrators has been practised for many years in one form or another. Some have established simple feedback loops in areas such as fine ore bin feeders (tonnage control), mill pump sump levels (flow control) and water additions (density control). There are also some sophisticated systems which infer circuit product size using complex measurements of mass flaws and water additions in the circuit and attempts are made to control those flaws to produce a constant circuit product size. The inferred size method in Australian concentrators has become firmly entrenched in the last ten years and control techniques involving the use of direct size measurements with reliable on-stream sizers have been Ignored.
