Ore reserve reporting practices in the United States may be broken into four general categories as follows: ò Reserve reports, often of an unofficial and preliminary nature, which are made through the news media. These are often based on exploratory drilling or sampling results. ò Reserve reports made for the purpose of raising public funds by issuing securities on the stock market, or as part of other filings to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission. ò Reserve reports to obtain private funds from banks, financial institutions, or other investors. ò Reserve reports for internal use and planning by companies operating or evaluating mineral properties. This paper discusses current practices for each of these types of ore reserves reports and reviews recent changes which have affected those practices.

The paper describes the detailed hydrogeological studies carried out prior to the sinking of twin shafts at British Coal's new mine at Asfordby, Leicestershire, UK. The test methods for assessing potential groundwater inflows to the shafts are discussed and details are given of the ground freezing scheme employed through the major aquifer zone in the Sherwood Sandstone at a depth of 375 metres. During shaft sinking pressure recovery tests were carried out to further assess potential inflows and the results are compared with those from the surface tests prior to sinking.

Friction rock stabilisers (FRS) are steel-based, thin-walled tubular ground reinforcement widely used in underground mines in Western Australia. Following installation these stabilisers are subject to corrosion which may reduce the load carrying capacity and lead to unexpected ground falls. Although corrosion has been recognised as a common occurrence, particularly under aggressive mine water and mineral conditions present in underground mines, the knowledge of the effects of corrosion on the mechanical behaviour of FRS is limited. The Department of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia has conducted a laboratory based program of studies to investigate the effect of corrosion on the mechanical properties of FRS. The studies have focused on the effect of corrosion on tensile strength of FRS and frictional resistance along the interface between FRS and the drillhole wall. The results indicate that under certain conditions corrosion damage can significantly reduce the effectiveness of FRS.

Taiwan is situated between Ryukyu and the Philippines with 35,960 sq. km of area, being slightly larger than Belgium It has roughly a spindle-shaped outline with a longitudinal axis extending in a roughly north-south direction. Geologically, Taiwan is extremely complex in terms of its tectonic setting in the convergence zone between the Asian continent and the Philippine Sea Plate. To the east of Taiwan, the Philippine Sea Plate subducts beneath the Ryukyu island arc, and to the south of Taiwan the Philippine Sea Plate overrides the Asian plate along the Manila Trench. Taiwan, therefore, occupies an unstable region between these two well-defined subduction systems of opposite polarity (see the following block diagram).

Expertise has been developed locally to a high level during the last decade which has contributed to the success of many recent mining projects. Using these services effectively and economically is an objective which client and consultant both must pursue but which is not always achieved. Zeolites are potential carriers of slow release fertilisers due to their unique phenomenon for salt occlusion. A comparative study was performed on the capacities of potassium nitrate (KNO3) occlusion in molten KNO3 treated synthetic 4A and 13X zeolite molecular sieves with main channel sizes of 0.41 x 0.41 nm and 0.74 x 0.74 nm respectively. The results show that in a laboratory setting, the treated zeolite 4A contained 13.57 per cent of occluded KNO3 and the treated zeolite 13X did not contain any. This was confirmed by the regular release of K+ and NO3- during washing both treated mixed samples with water and by their IR spectra and TG analysis. There are also changes of the relative intensities of peaks in X-ray diffractograms of both treated zeolite samples. K+ release from molten-KNO3 treated zeolites in deionised water and simulated soil solution shows that release of K+ from KNO3 occluded in zeolite 4A are slow and steady. Proper size fit between the channel size of zeolites pore and the size of K+-NO3- ion pair of KNO3 is the decisive factor for zeolites to occlude KNO3.

THE Great Fitzroy Mines Limited, comprising an area of 183 acres, and held under lease, are situated at Mt. Chalmers, within the Cawarral goldfield, 18 miles from the city of Rockhampton, Queensland, on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon railway.The nearest railway station i; Mt. Ohalmers, distant about half a mile from the mine, with which it is connected by a fairly good road. The outcrop of the ore-body consists almost entirely of ironstained quartzite, no sign of copper being visible. The outcrop and its immediate vicinity have been worked intermittently for gold during the past :fifty years, the ore being amenable to battery treatment.About twenty years ago a company was formed to prospect this outcrop, and work was commenced by driving an adit, but the results proved disappointing, and work ceased. Later a party of prospectors sunk a winze from the adit level, which has sincedeveloped into wh~t is now known as the North shaft. The property was afterwards prospected by Messrs. Oharley and Osborne, who continued sinking the winze, meeting with sulphides at a depth of about 120 ft.The Mt. Chalmers Copper Mining Company was formed to work the property, and smelting operations started on a small scale. These, however, met with ip.different success, and the property was again abandoned.

This short paper outlines the authorÆs views regarding the present ability of the resources industry to manage its mining assets. It represents a personal view û but one founded in fact-based observations of mining companies and of the mining industry in general. It contends that whilst a great deal has been learnt about the management of mines over the last 500 years since the seminal work of Agricola, observations suggest that best practice management is the exception rather than the rule across our industry. Although insights regarding the successful management of mines have become apparent, we still witness unnecessary errors in our industry that lead to the loss of shareholdersÆ funds. By highlighting some aspects of current best practice, particularly in the arena of operations improvement, it is hoped that this short paper contributes a small step along the next 500-year-long learning curve. At a time of key skill shortages in our industry as mineral producers attempt to ramp-up production to capture historically high commodity prices, achieving best practice operations management has seldom been more critical.

THIS paper is not intended to be more than a mere outline of the economic geology of Tasmania. It is desired to present in a condensed form the present state of our knowledge in regard to the distribution of the ore, coal, and oil-shale deposits of Tasmania in time and space.Tasmania is exceptionally well endowed with mineral wealth, particularly in the north-western and western districts. In the enthusiasm resulting from the first discoveries of mineral deposits at a great number of localities in those districts, it became a generally accepted belief that the whole of that portion of Tasmania constituted a continuous metalliferous province. As geological research in these, areas has progressed, however, it has become increasingly clear that ore-deposition has been confined on an economic scale to definite well-defined areas or belts which have a genetic relationship to certain tectonic and petrologic phases of the general geology. Economies in cemented fill demand the utilisation of the full potential of the portland cement component of the mix. If declined tailings are used, it is desirable to establish the optimum particle size distribution. Pozzolic materials and slags are. very useful additions to increase the amount of cementitious material through reaction with calcium hydroxide produced by hydration of the cement. It is also essential to check out the presence of substances which may seriously affect the setting and hardening of the cement or the durability of the cement bond. The importance of quality control in the preparation of cemented fill cannot be over Emphasised.

The replacement of diphenylguanidine (DPG) for separating INCO Bessemer matte with a water soluble collector requires a frother since most collectors do not have frothing properties. The objective of this study was to identify a non persistent frother which produced a deep froth and collapsed rapidly, while maintaining acceptable metallurgical separation. Incremental rougher flotation tests failed to differentiate any metallurgical benefit through the use of a specific frother, so other tests were employed to identify the candidate frother. The equilibrium froth height and rate of froth collapse (froth stability) of several commercial frothers were evaluated as a function of frother concentration using a 'frothmeter' apparatus. Frothers evaluated were methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), Pine Oil, triethoxy butane, Dowfroth SA1263, Dowfroth 250C, Dowfroth 200 and Allied Colloids CRNI-1002. Dowfroth SA1263 produced the largest froth height, and TEB had the greatest rate of froth collapse. Frothers with properties similar to Dowfroth SA1263 and Dowfroth 250 were rejected due to their persistent froths. TEB was rejected because it has a low flash point and Pine Oil could be a nuisance to add to a flotation column. Therefore, the preferred frothers were declared to be Dowfroth 200 or Allied Colloids CRNl-1002.

Thallium is largely volatilized during sintering in the conventional sinter/blast furnace production of lead. The new direct oxygen smelting processes will force the thallium into the bullion, necessitating a means of removal to avoid contamination of the refined lead. Pilot plant testwork demonstrated that thallium was efficiently removed from lead bullion by treatment with molten zinc chloride. The spent zinc chloride salt was treated in the laboratory to recover lead sulphate, a zinc chloride solution, and a thallous chloride salt containing over 80% thallium. Cominco is installing this thallium process as part of its Trail Lead Smelter Modernization Program which will commission a QSL bath smelter in late 1989.

Solid Energy New Zealand operates the Stockton Opencast Coal Mine, a unique deposit consisting of high quality hard coking and thermal coals. Stockton's uniqueness includes high variability of the shipment specifications, strict quality constraints, minimal stockpiling capacity in the coal transport chain and the variability of coal quality both vertically within the seam and laterally across the deposit. The process of resource proving and modelling results in a high level of understanding of the deposit to allow detailed planning to be undertaken. The use of computer aided mine planning tools is an important component of the mine planning at Stockton. Detailed planning is implemented in the field through selective mining practices and monitoring to minimise dilution and maximise recovery of the coal resource. The quality variability in the coal, the æjust in timeÆ approach of the coal transport chain and markedly varying quality specifications from shipment to shipment requires a large coal inventory and the mine to be driven by quality constraints rather than material movement capacities.

THE past few years have seen a considerable expansion of the roasting of blende in Australia. The bulk of this blende is Zinciferous concentrate from Broken Hill and now forms a very considerable source of sulphur for the acid manufacture. It will bereadily conceded that Australian sentiment is in favour of utilising all known potential wealth, especially that won from below ground, as this once disposed of is gone forever. If Australia does not make sulphuric acid from her sulphide ores we may be sure that the purchaser of these ores will do so if in any way possible. It must not be assumed, then, that the difficulties met are mentioned with the idea of undue criticism, but rather to show that, although most of the intial troubles have been overcome, there are still a few to be encountered; and with the hope that comment brought forth will aid in the solution of the problems facing an industry at present little more than in its childhood as far as Australia is concerned.Blende roasting is done in mechanical furnaces of various makes, and mostly without the aid of other fuel than the sulphur in the ore. It will be our aim to touch on the various difficulties in the order in which they occur in the train from furnace to acid plant.

æZero waste steel making productionÆ has already been the subject of several studies and also the successful result of some companies. Regarding waste and by-products, slags are the largest in terms of weight, although among the least hazardous. All steelmakers around the world are presently looking into profitable solutions, according to their local conditions: environment constraints, available markets, and mode of operation. Today the major technical methods of slag value capture include different levels of magnetic separation and screening to remove entrained steel, for production of aggregate in civil works. A survey of different retrieval processes shows that pyrometallurgical processing of steelmaking slags will increase the recovery ratio of iron and other metals. In the process, the remaining part of the material, a mixture of metallic oxides, can be easily transformed into hydraulic binder such as cement. Can steelmakers consider the slag as a co-product, and not only a waste or by-product? The ability of pyrometallurgical processes to treat other wastes and by-products generated in the steelplant is an opportunity for the steelmakers to reach the æzero waste productionÆ status. A technical survey of the experiences and possible solutions of pyrometallurgical processing is presented as well as technical descriptions of technological, economical and profitability analysis in relation with foreseeable markets.
