The basic concept of auger mining is to extract coal beyond the economic limits of surface mining technology by drilling holes of an appropriate diameter size into the exposed seam of the highwall as deep as is technically, economically and operationally feasible. This method of mining is used at the final highwall of typical surface mining operations. This paper describes the auger mining systems and discusses the methods to increase the coal recovery in auger mining from a field trial in Australia.

An algorithm is described which leads directly to a unique set of coal washing parameters which, in two or more parallel streams, will give maximum yield of product at a given ash. This occurs when all parallel streams are washed to the same incremental ash. This strategy is shown to offer a considerable increase in yield compared to the simpler strategy of washing each stream to the same sumulative ash.

A feasibility study will fail its objective if it does not identify and then correctly assess, all the risks which could have a substantial impact on the financial viability of a project. Before this assessment can be undertaken, one needs to understand the risk profile of the entity which is making the decision about the project. Some of the commonly encountered issues when assessing project risk are related to the problem of not being able to see the wood for the trees. In any risk analysis it is important that conservatism does not strangle a viable project; that the variables are internally consistent with each other, that reality checks are carried out and that appropriate expertise is used. Sensitivity analysis forms a part of the overall project risk assessment; however, it can only test those variables which have already been identified in the financial model. The most useful tool in performing a sensitivity analysis is Monte Carlo simulation. When properly used, it provides a more real world scenario than the simple adjustment of key variables by ¦ 10 per cent one at a time. Monte Carlo can provide valuable information about the robustness of a project. Project risk and sensitivity assessment is prone to the analysis paralysis syndrome. The focus should be on quality rather than quantity.

So I asked the driver, where did they get that name? `Oh,' he said, `from some people who built a house there. That was it's name- Duntroon.' Alkalis in the blast furnace are removed mainly by the slag, Alkali removal by the slag was studied as a rate process of alkali vapor- ization from the slag flowing through the dropping zone in the blast furnace. The vapor-, ization rate of I:20 from CaO-Si02-A1203 IZ20 slag was- measured under various experimental conditions. An empirical formula for the vaporization rate was obtained as a function of slag basicity, temperature and surface area per unit mass of slag. A simulation model of IC20 vaporization in the dropping zone was evaluated using the rate equation when the true velocity and surface area of the slag was de- termined from a flow dynamic model of counter- current gas-liquid flow through packed beds. The influence of the dynamic conditions of flow, as well as the slag basicity and temperature, on alkali removal by the slag was estimated.

A distinct zonation occurs in the nature of submarine volcanic activity associated with westwards propagation of the Woodlark spreading system into continental crust. Olivine tholeiites (Type I MORB) flooring one spreading segment in the Eastern Sector of the Western Woodlark Basin are accompanied by more evolved "ferrobasalts". Basaltic andesites and Mg-poor andesite-dacites occur on axial and flanking seamounts respectively. In the Western Sector, Mg- and K-rich olivine andesites occur in a rift valley and on an axial seamount near the tip of the propMr/8 tig rift. Observed correlations between 6Sr ratios (0.7028-0.7041), REE patterns and K contents imply a complex petro- genesis with the relative importance of mantle heterogeneity and crustal contamination difficult to resolve.

In the course of the last ten years the development of the mining industry in the Czech Republic has been influenced by the pushing through of economic and ecological criteria. Due to this coal mining was ended in the whole series of the underground coal mines. These mines become the source of ecological and safety risks û methane leakage, surface deformation, etc. The way of solving of these problems is by stowing of underground spaces, and also surface fault basins with the help of mixtures produced from industrial wastes. The presupposition of this procedure is knowledge of prescriptions for production of the mixtures, and of the economic advantageousness of carrying out these activities. This contribution pays attention to the utilisation of power-gypsum as a raw material in the production of mining-construction materials.

A Devonian metallogenic province is extended northwards from central Queen- -sland to the Burdekin Basin in the Charters Towers Gold and Mineral Field. Devonian sediments of the Burdekin Basin are intruded by mineralised quartz felspar porphyry which occurs as pebbles in Upper Devonian conglomerate. A mineralised volcanic complex lies on the crest of an anticline in Devonian sediments.Red siltstone is slurried and reduced to pyritic hornfels over folded limestone.A thick wedge of volcanogenic conglomerate overlain by marine shale lies on the mineralised rim of an ocean which suffered cataclysmic changes during Late Devonian times.

Ausmelt has developed and commercialised high temperature reactor technology that has been applied to waste processing in the form of a catalytic waste converter (CWC). Ausmelt Technology uses a top submerged lance system within a versatile converter containing an oxidised molten siliceous slag. Metals and other valuable products can be extracted from wastes for recycle into the community. Non-valuable components such as toxic organochlorinated compounds are destroyed and prevented from reforming. The slag produced is inert and can be safely used in building and concreting. The CWC can be applied to practically all types of wastes and examples from Ni-Cd batteries to toxic wastes are discussed. Additional benefits can be derived from large-scale operations if the surplus heat generated is exploited to produce steam and electricity.

A thousand writers have harped upon the wondrous nature of the inventive faculty. They realise that man is a creator, and that capital and labour alike are, and will always be impotent without machinery and processes that is invention. What Bacon has said is echoed by them all, "the introduction of new inventions seemeth to be the very chiefest of human actions. The benefit of new inventions may extend to all mankind-they make all men happy without injury to 'any' they are new creations and imitations of God's own works." My remarks will occupy another field I will refer to some of those features of the Patent Laws of different countries, which prevent the use of new inventions, oppress the development or inventive' genius, and diminish human happiness and progress' Wherever Patent Laws are framed and administered upon wrong principles, these results are inevitably found. A concise, complete, common-sense comparison of the chief Patent Laws of the world cannot easily be found but to avoid seeing scrappy, misleading references to Patent Law in the press particularly the English-would be equally difficult. Writers who are considered authorities so frequently make minor issues prominent and so uniformly fail to give weight to fundamental principles that the effect on the public is to mislead.

The karst water system in Han-Xing District is charaterised by heterogeneity in karstification and permeability of the limestone aquifer, unsteady flowing of the groundwater along karst runoff zone system, periodic recharge related with the periodic precipitation, and concentrative discharge of the groundwater in the form of karstic spring groups. The basic law is that the quantity of the water is very large during waterflood period and rather small in dry period, which has brought about difficulties and contradictions in mining and water supply. The measure to bring the karst water under control must be based on the principle of comprehensive ways and on the systems engineering method. Macroscopiclly, it is the reasonable countermeasure to retain surface water in the upstream section of the karst water system and to strengthen infiltration in the midstream section and to combine exploitation and utilization of the groundwater with water protection and mine dewatering in the area in which mines are distributed.

For decades strip mining with discon tinuously operating 'draglines and shovels has been the most economical operation method in the shallow hard coal opencast mines of Aust- ralia, North-America and some other countries. Continuously operating equipment such as bucket chain excavators and bucket wheel excavators in combination with conveyor belt systems, conveyor bridges and stackers had been deve- loped in Germany; during the last 25 years this type of equipment has been further developed in order to allow a high degree of rationaliza= tion as to opencast mines in unconsolidated overburden in Germany, in many European couh- tries, in India and in Victoria. The differing compactness of the layers to be mined, the increasing mining depth, the adverse over- burden to coal ratio and geotechnical con- ditions account for the combined use of con- tinuously and discontinuously operating equip- ment and systems. This paper is to demonstrate some projects showing the combination of continuously and discontinuously operating equipment which aims at optimizing opencast mine operations. I am sure that you are- all familiar with Airborne Magneto-meter Surveying so I shall-spend only a brief moment describing the instrument and techniques and the remainder of the allotted time-on-modern-application-of the instrument.The Airborne Magnetometer used by Aero Service in AUstralia-was designated by Gulf Research and implements the saturable-core flux-gate--principle. The first magnetometers developed'weremagnetic-balances and depended on the counter-torque principle but these required a stable platform and hence are not applicable to airborne surveying. Other methods include the induction methods, the Hall Effect methods, magneto-striction methods., Deflectioh. of,free.electrons, the proton-precession methods.Some: of these are applicable to airborne surveying. As a matter of-fact the nuclear precession magnetometer is the one generally used in the Satellites because it has been miniaturized most successfully.The Gulf Magnetometer is the one most generally used in mineral and petroleum exploration because its sensitivity is sufficient for the problem and-data and instrument techniques have been worked out and standardized.

Heavy mineral deposits accumulate on shorelines with interrupted sediment input. Beach deposits, which form on shallowly dipping coastal plains, are most favourable. However, shallow shelves seaward of cliffed coastlines are known to contain economic deposits. Significantgeologicalconditions are defined, from review of the stratigraphic and geomorphic controls on known deposits , for heavy mineral accumulation on the Swan Coastal Plain.

The influence of layering on the rate of heat transfer through a packed bed consisting of particles of two different sizes and heat capacities has been determined by measuring the heat front velocity through beds of quartzite particles and iron ore pellets. The heat front velocity through the layered beds was less than that through a bed consisting of a random mixture of the par- ticles. This is due to the formation of an interface in which the smaller pellets in one layer penetrate into the layer of quartzite Below.

Many workers have observed an inverse relationship between final concentrate grade and valuable component recovery achieved by a flotation circuit, i.e. an increase in either grade or recovery may only be achieved at the expense of the other. The relationship is termed a "grade-recovery" curve and, in theory, limits the separation obtained by the circuit. However, circuit surveys in a nickel concentrator indicate that the operating "grade-recovery" curve of a circuit is not only determined by the nature of the ore and the circuit operating conditions, but also by the circuit design, particularly in terms of stage capacities. The surveys show that different capacity circuits can produce different operating curves for the same ore, and that capacity reallocation between stages has the potential to improve both grade and recovery. In particular, the relationship between circuit design and operating curve position is shown to be a function of the circulating loads generated by the circuit design, balancing the beneficial effects of recycling material against the proportion of plant capacity consumed by recycling.

An electrochemical study of the dissolution of gold in aerated cyanide solution has shown that the dissolution rate is determined b the nature of the surface. A passive film (probably a basic cyanide formed at .o.6 V vs a saturated calomel electrode inhibits both the ca.thodi reduction of oxygen.
