Schenck Process is an established customer-driven solutions provider, utilising its knowledge, expertise and technologies to transform production processes. Operating across several industries Schenck Process have developed quality solutions from their range of equipment to solve problems and fill holes in other people’s processes. In the non-ferrous metals industries Schenck Process have been using their Clyde Brand solutions in Pneumatic Transport to solve problems on smelter sites for a number of years, handling of concentrates, additives and metallurgical dusts. Working alongside clients around the world they have developed a number of dust handling systems for flash furnaces from New Boliden, through Codelco to PASAR. Solving handling issues in dust collection has proved to suit Schenck Process range of equipment well and now a series of solutions are available. Solutions have been developed to handle materials up to 600°C and can convey over 1 km. Conveying to remote location for disposal, injecting directly into a furnace through lances, return to furnace burner feed, or deliver and dose into leaching reactors, Schenck Process are ready to ‘make processes work’. Historic solutions at New Boliden and Codelco demonstrate a range of material application and the long term performance of the equipment. Recent installations at Pasar utilise the Schenck new ProPhaseTM equipment and handle the Waste Heat Boiler and ESP dusts directly and simplify the dust train. The paper will seek to show how this equipment can bring benefit in handling high temperature materials directly and eliminate several traditional steps that are often unreliable. The systems can be paired with Schenck Process new PHASiQTM and STREAMiQTM control systems which are complete PC, HMI, PLC, Interface system with full SCADA, Data Storage and IoT ready remote interrogation and support available. Installed in this challenging environment the systems are ready for smelter use. The systems can be also joined to our new E-nizingTM web portal. A perfect partnership to deliver the trend in ‘Big Data’ while providing visibility and off site support. The paper will show how these systems can deliver reliable equipment and remote support for these often isolated sites as well as delivering rapid return on investment. This paper discusses a step change in simplifying Flash Furnace Dust handling which Schenck believes shows the truth of Schenck Process Solutions claim that ‘we make processes work’.

WATER power, until developed, produces nothing, but when harnessed it continues to produce, it might be said, indefinitely. Hence the importance of developing all feasible water powers. British Columbia, like the western states of America, is subject to variable meteorological conditions which cause most streams to be erratic in their flow. The wet season, usually commencing in October and continuing to March or April, together with the melting of the snows during the early summer, produces a heavy run-off which diminishes considerably during the later s1.1,mmer months, with the result that storage is essential on practically every stream in order to regulate the flow to obtain a discharge which will meet the requirements of the load of the markets the power is to serve. Storage sites of sufficient capacity to equate the flows are not always present and it follows that, where such a deficiency exists, the difference must usually be met by burning fuel in steam plants. Fortunately, there are within the Province deposits of high-grade coal, suitable for the operation of such auxiliary steam plants. One of the strongest reasons for the development of water powers is the conservation of fuel. All use of coal or oil depletes resources that can never be renewed. Every water power developed means a saving in fuel and, even if at first it does not possess an over-powering financial advantage, it must become of ever increasing value as fuel resources become depleted. However, sight must not be lost of the inter-relation which should exist between the two methods of generating electrical energy, as each makes an admirable supplement to the? other with respect to suitability for carrying different types of load. In general, it can be said that the fixed charges of a water power development are usually high in relation to the operation costs, while those of fuel power plants are usually the reverse, so it is sometimes possible to combine the two methods of generation for the more efficient production of energy.

Keeping the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course is essential from the regulatory, environmental and sustainability perspectives. Regulation of this aspect of mining is embedded in environmental legislation and government receiving water quality standards, and government control has apparently been considered to be the most appropriate method to define mine site discharge standards and the environmental implications of sediment in downstream watercourses. A literature search for guidelines for the site specific design and operation of sediment ponds treating mine site runoff to remove total suspended solids, turbidity and flocculant-induced toxicity, revealed little information on the mining industry?s and government?s roles in defining the ?how to achieve? related to sediment pond design. Is there a need or reason for an industry-driven leadership to clearly define the ?how to? keep the sediment on the mine site and out of the water course? Currently, this issue is addressed in Canada by a federal mining regulation for metal mines which specifies discharge quality for sediment. This paper focuses on the method used in British Columbia, Canada, to regulate and provide a scientific methodology to control the discharge of sediment from mine sites. Management plans relative to this topic are discussed and are considered to have value from the exploration, construction, operation and the onset of closure phases. In addition, the balance and linkage between the erosion control management plan and the sediment pond management plan are discussed in terms of how they may be designed to complement each other to lower the risk of exceeding discharge and receiving water quality standards. If there were an industry-driven standard, or guidance document relative to addressing sediment release, it would benefit mining companies by eliminating the repetitive analysis of this topic for each new mine, mine expansion, and mine modification; also, government may often replace certain aspects of permitting with a regulation, if there is a government/industry established standard defining Best Achievable Technology (e.g. the Canadian Metal Mining Effluent Regulations).

"The St-Honoré carbonatite complex, located 8 miles north of Chicoutimi, Quebec, was discovered in September 1967 as abnormal radioactivity was detected in the course of SOQUEM's aerial surveys. The complex, covered by a shallow layer of Trenton limestone, has been explored by aeromagnetic, ground gravimetric and magnetic surveys, and 12,013 feet of diamond drilling. Its age, from potassium-argon dating, is 650 million years. The carbonatite is approximately kidney-shaped and has a surface area of 6 square miles, 20 per cent of which is explored. It shows a central core of coarse-grained massive dolomitic carbonatite and an outer ring of foliated dolomitic carbonatite.The exploration work to date has resulted in the discovery, in the foliated carbonatite, of an incompletely drilled niobium (columbium) zone of pyrochlore-bearing carbonatite, at least 1,000 by 800 feet in size. This zone contains 5,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.86 per cent Nb205 or at least 15,000 tons per vertical foot grading 0.66 per cent Nb205 or 45,000 tons grading 0.48 per cent Nb20s. The pyrochlore contains an average of 64 per cent Nb,Os. The central core contains a zone of rare-earth-bearing carbonatite (as monazite), grading up to 4.5 per cent rare-earth oxide, 3,500 ppm zinc and 290 ppm molybdenum. Stocks of nepheline syenite and magnetite diorite accompany the carbonatite. The total analysis and trace-element contents of typical rocks are presented."

Highwall mining is a highly mechanized coal mining method associated with several advantages, such as a very high production rate (approximately 3,000 t/d) and low production costs. There is no requirement for underground support, ventilation, or blasting. Production leads to added recovery, which is otherwise lost in the ultimate pit. The use of highwall mining can bridge the gap that exists between supply and demand in the energy sector. This paper presents a brief review of highwall mining technology, including current status, analysis tools, and design techniques. In addition, it identifies important parameters from the analysis of failure case studies.

"THE Wabana iron ore mines, owned and operated by the Dominion Steel and Coal Corporation, Limited, .are on Bell Island in Conception bay, on the east coast of Newfoundland. Mining began on surface in 1895 and, although open-pit work is still done on a small scale, the entire output may be considered to•be derived from extensive submarine workings. In 1958 the average daily production of hematite ore was close to 12,000 tons, almost all of which was concentrated in a heavy-media plant. SUMMARYThe character, occurrence, and extent of the submarine bedded deposits enabled early operators to meet prevailing market demands with the minimum attention paid to exploration. Mechanization of the mine and the pressure for sustained high tonnages since 1955 have emphasized the importance of an expanded exploration and development programme.A serious handicap has been the impossibility of utilizing normal diamond drilling methods to explore ore conditions in advance of mining faces. Drilling between tl1e bedded zones has been done but the major difficulty has been to delineate ore reserves in the lower bed, which has the greatest ore potential of the three mineable seams."

It used to be that a science/engineering presentation on "light weight" at a metallurgy conference, would relate to the materials science, processing, component fabrication and applications of aluminum, magnesium and titanium. Within the automotive industry, light weight now includes how to "lighten up", how to lightweight, or how to mass reduce vehicle components and systems. Increasingly stringent global emissions-reduction requirements require increasing vehicle fuel efficiency; mass reduction is an enabler to achieve this. While light metals certainly are the basis, a host of other materials can be used to optimize mass reduction while meeting vehicle performance, safety and cost requirements. New grades of ultrahigh strength steels and even nanosteels can be thinned down and save over 1/3 the mass vs conventional mild steels. A compacted graphite cast iron engine can be made lighter than an aluminum one. Aluminum components in vehicles were only castings; now aluminum stampings, forgings and extrusions are becoming more visible components of mass reduction. Lower mass high temperature polymers, and carbon fiber polymer composites now replace aluminum and steel. These materials often require specialized processing and manufacturing techniques to produce a component, including superplastically formed twin roll cast sheet aluminum and magnesium, and hot stamped/in-mold quenched steels. The assembly of hybrid structures requires unique joining/bonding, and corrosion-inhibiting techniques that might include sophisticated structural adhesives. This thinking "light" presentation, will conclude with a discussion of U.S. and Canadian government engineering and research support for mass reduction, including the proposed $148 M American Lightweight Materials Manufacturing Innovation Institute.

"The Alberta and Northwest Chamber of Mines was founded in Edmonton, Alberta in 1935. The organization represented private sector mining explorers and developers in the province and north west Canada. The Chamber aided and abetted the establishment of the two territorial mining associations. Because of corporate human resource department creation by north of sixty mine operators, the Chamber refocused on Alberta and broadened its perspective to include activities beyond mining. In 1977 the name changed to the Alberta Chamber of resources. The slogan (in more modern terms vision, mandate, goal, etc) remains as Orderly Development of Canada's Resources.The sixty-three year reputation of the Chamber, built on volunteer rather than staff contribution, is the principal reason for any success. The key has truly been the reputation, not an image, as all activities have been solution oriented.This presentation provides insight into the structure and methodology applied by the organization, and reviews some of the successes and failures during the period 1985 to present. "This paper describes the simultaneous sinking and equipping of a 4.9 m diameter concrete-lined shaft to a projected depth of 1660 m. The shaft blast design utilizes the full face method using a parallel hole burn cut. Hydraulic drilling and a totally redesigned Cryderman-type mucking unit were integrated into the four deck sinking stage to provide for drilling, mucking, concreting and shaft steel equipping operations. A safety program was tailored and implemented specifically for this shaft sinking project.IntroductionIn July 1988, Falconbridge Limited commenced development of its Thayer Lindsley exploration site located some four km north of Sudbury on Regional Road 80.The first phase of this project was awarded to J .S. Redpath Mining Consultants Limited and the scope of work included the engineering and project management to construct a surface plant capable of supporting a shaft sinking and exploration program for potential future mine development. This initial phase of the project was completed on schedule and under budget on December 23, 1988, and is the subject of an independent paper.In November 1988, J.S. Redpath Limited was awarded the shaft sinking and exploration phase of this project. The scope of work consisted of sinking and equipping a 4.9 m diameter shaft to a depth of 1660 m and carrying out the development and diamond drilling on two levels. This work was scheduled to be completed by November 1991.The T .L. Exploration Project is located toward the eastern end of the south range of the Sudbury basin, north of Sudbury. Figure 1 details the projected mining area and the shaft location on the geological complex. Figure 2 is a section showing the exploration shaft that is located in the Norite. Two levels will be developed from this shaft, on the 1310m and 1588 m levels, to provide access for further geological examination of the ore bodies."

"In recent years, the mining industry has been inundated with new technologies and software systems to aid in productivity improvement. Accompanying this increased level of technology and computer systems has been the exponential growth in data sources and sinks for all aspects of a mining operation. This rapid growth in data and technology has evolved through vendor “push” approaches and user “pull” scenarios, the result of which has been that currently, no standards exist defining how data from new technology should be accessed and transferred from surface mining equipment and systems. Consequently, many incremental benefits of the systems have not been realized. This paper will present a discussion of this important issue and introduce a new committee formed to address standards to assist the industry in making effective use of current and future technology. Potential benefits accruing from the development of these standards will be illustrated through the use of a case study at Fording Coal Limited. IntroductionThe mining industry is currently faced with a rapid evolution in the computing-based systems capabilities of mobile production equipment. At the same time, there is a trend toward the introduction of even larger machines, with novel designs or incorporation of new technologies within existing designs. Computing and control technology will be required to operate and acquire knowledge about equipment operation, utilization, and performance. Such knowledge has the potential to lead to enhanced equipment design, more appropriate equipment selection, and optimized equipment performance. The equipment systems will be required to be integrated with mine production monitoring systems, maintenance management software, and a wealth of other information systems to provide a complete understanding of the effects of various factors such as maintenance, equipment design and production on economics (Roman and Daneshmend, 2001). This will lead to a better understanding and implementation of the opportunities to enhance the performance of the mine through interaction of the mine operations."

An experimental and numerical study was conducted on the geomechanical behaviour of oil sands during penetration tests in which a steel wedge with an apex angle of either 20 degrees or 30 degrees was forced into compacted oil sands. The boundary conditions simulated in the laboratory tests are similar to shovel penetration into oil sands. The objective of the laboratory tests was to measure the force required to push a steel wedge into compacted oil sands. A wedge penetration test differs from conventional triaxial tests in that much more shear is generated. The laboratory data was needed to improve calibration of micro-mechanical input parameters for a two-dimensional discrete element model of oil sands constructed with Particle Flow Code (PFC). Initial model calibration was performed with triaxial test data and then a PFC model of the wedge penetration test was constructed. The measured force-displacement behaviour of the steel wedge was compared with PFC modelling results. It was found that different combinations of PFC particle and bond parameters could equally well replicate the laboratory triaxial compression data for bitumen-rich oil sands. When the wedge model was run, it was found that the resulting force required to penetrate the wedge into the oil sands was about four to six times higher than that measured. This clearly indicates that further research is required to improve the predictive capability of PFC models of oil sands.

"A significant effort is expended on preparation of the capital estimate for feasibility studies. The development of the operating cost estimate is usually allocated a significantly smaller budget and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy of the operating cost. This paper presents a comparison of capital and operating costs of hydrometallurgy processing plants in order to demonstrate the importance that variations in operating costs have on the overall life-of-mine costs. The analysis is supported by a case study on the operating costs of a water treatment plant at an existing Australian hydrometallurgy facility at the feasibility design level. INTRODUCTIONDetermination of the economic validity of a minerals processing project is a critical outcome of a feasibility study. In many cases, the financial results of the feasibility study will determine if the project should proceed to execution. Ensuring that these results are reliable and built upon sound engineering practices allows companies to make informed decisions on resource opportunities and the selected technology.The methodology for developing a capital cost estimate at the feasibility level is well established. Specialist engineering estimators use budget quotations, first principle estimation and rules-of-thumb to develop an estimate with an accuracy of typically -10% to +15%. Cost reporting software packages are used to methodically build up the estimate from design information supplied by the engineering disciplines. Risk analysis and capital expense workshops are carried out to identify potential deficiencies in the estimate. It is widely recognized that in order to successfully produce a feasibility level capital estimate with an appropriate level of accuracy, a rigorous development process is necessary.The development of the operating cost estimate is typically less rigorous than the capital cost estimate. The operating cost is normally derived by the process engineering discipline and rarely are specialist estimators used to support the development. The allocated budget for producing an operating cost is usually smaller and less emphasis is placed on ensuring the accuracy and contingency reflect the most likely operating cost scenario."

The history of the flotation process, as applied to the practical field of ore dressing, dates back somewhat less than twenty years; yet this fact may be overlooked in view of the present universal dependence on this process in the concentration of almost all classes of ore. It is therefore interesting to recall that Britannia was the scene of some of the earliest experiments with flotation on a commercial scale. In 1911, sixteen years ago, an Elmore vacuum machine was operated for several months with encouraging results. In 1913, some time before flotation was very generally adopted elsewhere, a Minerals Separation plant, capable of treating 600 tons daily, was operating successfully at Britannia. Considering how little was known of the theory and practice of flotation at that time, the recovery was remarkably good, but it was not until the present mill was completed in 1923 that any attempt was made to raise the concentrate grade by differential flotation, or, in other words, to float the chalcopyrite while rejecting the then worthless pyrite with the tailings. The first ore passed through the present concentrator in March, 1923. As originally designed, the rated capacity was for 2,000-2,500 tons, but this has been increased year by year, until at the present time 4,000 tons daily can be treated economically. During the first few months of operation the concentrate grade averaged only 10-11 per cent Cu, but by the end of 1923 this had been raised to over 20 per cent, due to the elimination of the pyrite by differential flotation. In 1923 the tailings averaged approximately 0.25 per cent Cu, but also in the matter of recovery a considerable improvement has been effected, for during the year 1926 an average tailing of 0.15 per cent Cu was maintained.

"A small scale continuous flotation cell was designed and constructed at the Noranda Technology Centre to develop a mobile testing flotation circuit located next to the production circuit. This mobile small scale flotation pilot plant can easily and economically be set up at any circuit in a mill and used to evaluate and predict plant performance against a given flotation condition. The main feature of the cell, beside the provisions of automatic pulp level and feed rate control, is to provide a reduced surface to volume ratio approaching to that of an industrial machine.This paper describes the basic design and the results of various testwork carried out to date including aeration, conditioning, reagents, recirculation, flotation gas, etc. are presented in comparison with the plant production results. INTRODUCTIONStudy of the behaviour of an ore during concentration by flotation process starts, in general, with a series of tests in laboratory cells. Given the discontinuous nature of these tests, the information obtained by such a study is somewhat limited. It has long been recognized that laboratory test results are not always reproducible in pilot plant tests and subsequently, the pilot plant results do not always predict plant performance. The differences are often blamed on batch vs continuous operations, grinding media, size distribution, aging (oxidation), water quality, equipment, operator's skills, etc."

Reconnaissance radiometric and geochemical data have been obtained for an area on the western shore of Wollaston Lake that includes the Rabbit Lake uranium deposit. The study area is extensively drift cover ed. The geochemical data were obtained by analysis of center-lake sediments and surface waters for a variety of elements and other constituents. The airborne radiometric data comprise measurements of eU, eTh and K obtained with a .50,000-cc NaI (Tl) detector at a mean terrain clearance of 120 m and 5-km flight-line spacing. Uranium in lake sediments and uranium in waters are the most effective geochemical indicators of uranium mineralization; the other elements measured are not notably anomalous. A sample site density of one per 1 8 km 2 is more than adequate for identification of the mineralized area. Because many water samples contain close to or below the current analytical detection limit of 0.05 ppb U, the use of sediments is generally favoured. for broad-scale reconnaissance in the region. Uranium in these lake sediments appears to be little influenced by variations in the organic or iron and manganese content. The most effective radiometric indicator of the mineralization is the eU/eTh ratio. This parameter is less influenced by environmental variation on the ground beneath the flight line than eU alone . The eTh/K ratio is anomalous under the Athabasca Formation unconformity where, in places, the uranium mineralization is localized.

The financial performance of the mining industry, measured by return on equity and capital employed, has been inadequate for many years. Consequently, mining companies are not valued highly by stock markets. Among the more important causes for the decline in the sector are the conservative working practices and reluctance to adapt to change or to develop new technology, although some relatively recent developments such as SX-EW copper and heap leach gold have made a significant impact on the cost base of these metals. The subsidiary business of metals exploration suffers from the same problems as the rest of the industry. The rate of discovery of ore deposits has been falling over many years and since the late 1990s, there has been a sharp reduction in global exploration activity that, if it continues, will further reduce the global supply of new ore reserves. New technological developments, particularly in geophysics and different operational practices may help reverse this trend. Statistical methods for evaluating the risk of ore reserve estimates will also improve the economic return on new mining ventures. The science of ore geology has potential to reduce exploration risk, but modern ore genetic theory has not contributed greatly to recent discoveries. The junior exploration market has almost ceased, but a new style of technically specialized efficient small exploration company has emerged which, in alliances with major companies, may be the vehicle for future global exploration. Exploration in virgin terrains has a higher risk discounted potential for the discovery of very large orebodies than that in known mining districts but mining companies have little financial incentive for this high risk exploration because of the very long lead time to production. Alliances of two or more companies reduce the risk in both the exploration for and development of major new mining projects. If new orebodies are not found, then metal prices will inevitably rise in the long term. Governments of industrial countries, particularly those with a significant mining industry such as Canada, should therefore provide assistance to exploration in order to maintain their existing industry and prevent a metals shortage from developing in the future with its consequent impact on the world economy and increased environmental damage as large lowgrade orebodies are developed to supply an expanding market.

In the late 1960's concerns about the natural environment reached high levels within North America and provided activists with suitable platforms for exerting influence over the general public and politicians. In response a host of regulatory mechanisms were developed, statutes, voluntary measures, land grants, codes of practices etc. Emerging environmental awareness from the era provided impetus for rapid technological change that encompassed all industries, especially the base metal business. The resulting clean up impacted all aspects of copper production, dealing with issues such as waste disposal, water and air quality with specific impact on emissions of sulfur dioxide and particulate. This paper provides a perspective of these changes reviewing the macro-economic impact of environmental movement in mining with its specific implications to the copper smelting industry. The fundamental challenges that were faced by the old, but capital-intensive North American plants and the approaches taken to deal with the changing times are reviewed with special emphasis on the conceptual approach to smelter S02 abatement and different paths taken in the USA and Canada. The role of economics, sustainable R&D and presence of technical infrastructure that facilitated the change process is elucidated, and speculations are made about the future state of pyrometallurgy and the natural environment. This paper first examines the evolution of environmental auditing, focusing in particular on three interlocking driving forces: company initiatives, collaborative industry initiatives, and government initiatives. It details the cooperative efforts of personnel at Noranda Technology Centre (NTC) and Brunswick Mining & Smelting (BMS) during the technology transfer of the Mechanic's Stethoscope. It demonstrates how everyone worked toward a goal of developing a product that is accepted as a useful addition to the work environment.The Mechanic's Stethoscope is an underground vehicle diagnostic system consisting of computer hardware and software intended to assist mechanics in daily tasks. Its tools facilitate quick and easy access to any information required during the maintenance of an underground vehicle. Each tool presents vehicle condition data in a simplified manner. The additional information improves the mechanics understanding of the vehicle condition. The result is a healthier fleet of vehicles and faster diagnosis times.When introducing a computer based system into a traditionally non-computer oriented environment a concern is the acceptance of the system. This concern exists on many levels."

Abstract - Ore reserve estimation, based on sparse drill hole data, was conducted for a placer gold property in Nome, Alaska. A problem with sparse data is that random subdivision of the data into modelling and evaluation subsets (as is commonly done) becomes a problem, as random selection may result in biased/skewed subsets. Therefore, a technique that combined data segmentation with genetic algorithms (GA) was applied to divide the samples into three equivalent subsets: training, validation and testing. Data segmentation was done on the basis of the distribution of gold values. Neural network and a variety of kriging techniques were used to estimate gold grades. A multi-layer feed forward neural network along with "early/quick stop" training was used for neural network modelling. A comparative evaluation of kriging and neural network methods was then performed.
