Thickening of mine tailings is a relatively new concept for their sustainable management. Removal of water from the tailings to form a paste instead of slurry disposal decreases environmental and geotechnical concerns. As the use of these pastes is relatively new, their behaviour requires investigations such as liquefaction and seismic stability, freeze-thaw behaviour, consolidation and leachate characterization. Slurry density, ore type, particle size distribution, specific gravity and environmental conditions can all influence paste characteristics. In this paper, the effect of the above-mentioned parameters is examined. New developments in water removal, and additives (such as flocculating agents, cements, organics, fertilizers, etc) leading to low moisture content tailings are reviewed, and the potential for thickening to enable sustainable management of mine tailings is discussed with respect to storage volume requirement, use of virgin land, consolidation of the tailings, land use after decommissioning.

"Abstract - Shallow submarine hydrothermal fluids from Paleohori Bay off the Greek Island of Milos have been investigated in detail. The extensive gas and warm (max. 93°C) water vents are enriched in major components such as C1-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4 +, K+, Sr2+, H2S and CH4 and depleted in Mg2+, O2 and SO4 2- relative to ambient seawater. Based on zero-Mg calculations, it is deduced that the submarine vent fluids are related to the geothermal reservoir beneath Milos which has a similar chemical composition. Fluid samples from each vent in Paleohori Bay represent a mixture of hydrothermal end-member fluids derived from the upper and deeper geothermal reservoir systems of Milos, a mantle-derived source, a high-chloride fluid resulting from phase separation of geo thermal fluids and a steam-heated CO2-rich meteoric water. Résumé - À l’île de Milos dans la mer d’Égée, des fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux en eau profonde ont été récherchés en détail près de la baie de Paleohori. Les larges émanations de gaz et d’eau chaude (temperature maximale: 93°C) sont enrichies en constituants principaux tels que de Cl-, Na+, Si, Ca2+, Mn, PO4 3-, NH4+, K+, Si, Sr2+, H2S et CH4 et appauvries en Mg2+, O2, SO4 2- comparé à l’eau de mer environnante. Selon le calcul du zéro-Mg, nous en déduisons que les fluides sous-marins hydrothermaux sont dérivés du réservoir géothermal sous l’île de Milos car leur composition chimique est la même. "The Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. A site specific rock classification system was developed that characterised all the rock units based on the engineering properties governing the rock mass behaviour i.e. intact rock strength and defect characteristics (spacing, aperture, infilling, wall roughness and weathering) irrespective of the geological origin. This approach simplified the design and the on-site verification processes. Based on this classification system, rigorous quantitative statistical assessments of the available geological information including various laboratory and field testing were performed to derive the geotechnical design parameters for various rock classes. These parameters were used to complete geotechnical designs of retaining wall systems. INTRODUCTIONThe Banora Point Upgrade Project is a 2.5km long six-lane divided freeway in northern New South Wales, Australia. The key features include two interchanges, a 300m long viaduct, a large cutting through Sexton Hill with an associated 100m wide Land Bridge and retaining walls reaching 490m long and up to 22m high. This paper focuses on the derivation of representative geotechnical parameters for geotechnical design of the retaining structures supporting Sexton Hill Cutting including bored pile retaining walls and soil nail walls. The geology at the project area comprises a volcanic succession of variably weathered basalt flows and agglomerate deposits that reach 48m in thickness and overlie Mesozoic sedimentary rocks. Due to the complex geological nature of the site, an understanding of the regional and local geology, the typical behaviour of individual geological units and the implication of onsite variations from design intention are the ultimate challenges to the geotechnical engineer in order to select representative geotechnical parameters for design."

A process utilizing ozone for the precipitation of cobalt from nickel sulphate liquors containing ammonium sulphate has been developed. Best results were obtained using nickel carbonate to maintain solution pH at 5.0 to 5.5. Work was performed both in column and stirred-tank reactors. Variables studied included neutralizer type and concentration, NH4+ concentration, temperature, Ni++ and Co++ concentration, per cent O3 in the O2 carrier gas, O3 input rate and agitation. The over-all rate of cobalt rejection increased sharply with increasing agitation and ozone concentration in the gas phase, reflecting relatively slow transfer of ozone from the gas to the liquid phase.

"Microscopic studies of peat moss indicate a highly porous material. In view of using this natural product as an adsorbing agent for the treatment of polluted water, studies of its adsorbing power for beef extract and alkyl benzene sulphonate solution were determined. The effects of time of contact, particle size, concentration of adsorbent and concentration of pollutant were studied. In the case of beef extract, there is a COD reduction of around 27 per cent; in the case of the alkyl benzene sulphonate, the percentage reduction varied from 72 to 95 per cent. A water treatment plant based on the adsorbing power of peat moss with simultaneous recuperation of the pollutant is proposed."

Modern underground mines operate fleets of mobile production equipment including drill jumbos, long-hole drills, load-haul-dump machines, trucks and bolters. Their availability has a substantial impact onto production cost and thus onto mine profitability. Through appropriate collection of pertinent data and information, use of adequate performance measures and their analyses, mine operators can identify the most promising and cost effective opportunities to get more from their equipment and to reduce the overall cost. This paper presents results of the study aimed to review and analyse means and measures used to quantify equipment availability and its contributing factors (reliability, maintainability and maintenance support) in several Canadian underground mines. It overviews current reporting procedures, sources, quality and quantity of the data and information collected as well as examines performance measures and their definitions used by the surveyed mines. Problems concerning data acquisition as well as meaningfulness and usefulness of the above mentioned metrics are also discussed. The paper concludes with some suggestions and recommendations concerning several aspects of equipment availability assessment. It is believed that the latter may become a more useful tool for mine operators in their efforts to reduce production cost than it seems to be the case at present.

A Mineral Processing facility in Montreal has recently implemented a leading-edge intranet solution for monitoring the performance of plant operations, and providing condition-based maintenance. This innovative multi-faceted software implementation incorporates: web-delivered plant information systems; area-wide control loop performance assessment (using sophisticated algorithms to evaluate poorly performing controllers); and integrated alarm management functions. The system has enabled a project to improve plant operations through better process control. Maintenance technicians, engineers, supervisors and managers all can see the performance of the controllers, and the performance of the plant itself, through webdelivered graphics and reports. Information is combined from many sources, real-time, historical, relational and analytical, to provide a complete picture of plant operation. The web-based solution centralizes the administration of user access, and simplifies the deployment of several different kinds of information to many desktops. It is an extensible system that allows users to create and share their own web pages and data views. The paper will discuss the solution architecture and the improvements the I.T., operations, maintenance, and engineering groups have experienced, and overall benefits to the facility.

The Nak?azdli First Nation and the municipality of Fort St. James are located in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area and are not unfamiliar to mining. These northern British Columbian communities have been associated with the historic Pinchi Lake Mercury mine and today are closely linked with British Columbia?s newest mine, the Mt. Milligan mine. Prior to the construction of Mt. Milligan, community health and social service providers were concerned about potential impacts that would occur from new mineral development activities. This concern has led to a partnership between the above communities and researchers with expertise in the area of mining and health. This paper describes: the current mining and health environment with a focus on British Columbia; mining trends in the Stuart Lake/Nak?al Bun area; the current community-based health research project funded by the Vancouver Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and; a suite of community-based health recommendations to mining companies on key issues to consider when developing projects near municipalities and Aboriginal communities in Canada, based upon one of the newest mines under development in Canada.

"One of the main problems encountered in employing sublevel caving is the inherent high dilution factor. The operating results at Granduc illustrate that this dilution can be closely controlled and satisfactory recoveries achieved, in base metal ores grading less than 2.0% copper equivalent, by using an assay grade control system based on the fundamental draw characteristics. The history of draw control procedures employed since the start of operations provides an effective comparison between this system and one based mainly on tonnage. The transverse and longitudinal sublevel caving mining methods are described and it is shown how improvements in design layout, operating practice and draw control in narrow complex ore zones (12-foot minimum width) have raised the operating performance of the longitudinal system to a satisfactory level."

"AbstractThis paper discusses the methods of handling air in a large asbestos mill presently being completed at the Jeffrey mine of the Canadian Johns-Manville Company in Asbestos, Quebec.The mill, being the largest single asbestos producer in the world and capable of handling over 14,000 tons of ore per day, requires vast quantities of air. A minimum of 2,500.000 c.f.m. is required or about 10 tons of air for each ton of ore milled.Short descriptions of the process and systems requiring this air are given, followed by details of the fans and filters which make up the heart of the mill.This 'draw through' system, located on the top or 12th floor, is an automatically .controlled volume-pressure system creating the required suction to draw .air throughout the mill building and its numerous air systems.The dry mechanical method of milling develops enormous quantities of airborne dust and fibre. A section of this paper is devoted to a description of the multiplicity of dust systems within a system to control, filter, and remove this dust.Finally, the paper describes the method of returning the filtered air to the• working floors or to the outside, with some notes on heat, humidity and dust counts.IntroductionGeneralTHE discussions in this paper deal only with operations where air movement is involved. EDC established an Environmental Review Framework in 1999. Throughout the early fall of 2001, the Corporation held public consultations across Canada to strengthen that framework, leading to a public release on November 15, 2001 of a report summarising the results of these consultations. Following this, the Corporation implemented strengthened environmental review requirements in the form of its Environmental Review Directive, in compliance with legislated amendments to Canada?s Export Development Act that went into effect on December 21, 2001. Over the past few years, there has been a global trend towards an increase in the social and environmental requirements of multilateral/bilateral financial institutions and export credit agencies. More recently, this activity has focussed on capturing institutions that have not yet adopted similar requirements and, more specifically, on developing a convergence of the requirements from institution to institution. This paper describes EDC?s new ERD and some of the initiatives that have taken place or are in process that are moving international financial institutions toward converging their environmental and social requirements for projects in the private sector.

Remote and isolated, located in a frigid, hostile environment, the Black Angel mine in Greenland had to create a warm social environment which would help attract and retain a stable work force of miners and support staff. The high cost of personnel turnover plagues many mines and, when the mine is inside the Arctic Circle, accessible by helicopters which are highly vulnerable to unpredictable weather conditions during the long, dark winters, the potential costs of personnel turnover become critical factors in the success or failure of the mining venture. Manpower planning should start from the date the engineers begin the technical design of the new mine. The plan should include provisions not only to ensure an adequate, skilled work force, but also to ensure a stable work force of people who are happy enough in the mining environment to want to remain, take their vacation and return to work at the mine. The skilled work force was assured with training courses of four months, designed to produce highly specialized underground workers from unskilled Danes and Greenlanders supported by trained Swedish and other Scandinavian miners. The stable social unit was assured by plans the primary attribute of which had to be flexibility. The accommodation changed from shared accommodation with communal washroom facilities to single accommodation with private washroom facilities. A recreational director was hired to help the workers make use of elaborate recreational facilities. A closed-circuit TV and radio system was installed to operate as a private broadcasting system using taped programs originally broadcast on European TV networks or developed by the mine personnel themselves. The liquor rules were changed and the mine manager became a licensed innkeeper responsible for the orderly operation of the Black Angel Bar in accordance with the Danish laws governing the services of a public bar. The result is a relatively stable work force. Some 35% of the people have more than two years' service with the company, Greenex A/S, and some 62% complete 10 months of service.

Modern civilization, modern industry, and modern standards of living, bring into, sharp relief the present-day essentiality of metals .and minerals, and the wide and diversified use which is made of them. Any attempt, therefore, to appraise the international situation today must take into consideration the metal and mineral resources of the world. If, as some believe, the world is divided into two distinct ideologies of political belief, one unalterably opposed to the other, so that armed conflict is unavoidable, then the question of national strength in mineral resources becomes of paramount importance. If, however, it is possible to avoid war by raising the standard of living in the underdeveloped ?areas of the world, thus ensuring all peoples everywhere against the dread spectres of starvation and disease, then the development of the world's mineral resources assumes even greater importance. Today it is difficult to realize that, prior to the industrial revolution in Great Britain, only a few of the metals and minerals now in common use entered into the everyday life of the people. !iron and steel, copper, lead, tin, and zinc, usually in .their unalloyed forms, along with the more common industrial minerals, were those most widely used, and then only in limited amount. With the advance of technology in metallurgy and in fabricating skills, the list of commercial metals and minerals has expanded until today they number more than eighty.

"At Vale's Thompson Nickel Refinery, the copper and arsenic in the nickel electrolyte are removed by precipitation using H2S, generating a sulphide precipitate containing about 40% Cu, 8% Ni, 2 to 4% As and 30% S. This residue has been typically stored in impoundment ponds within the plant site. Various options for reprocessing it have been investigated over the years. One of the options involved oxidative pressure acid leach, whereby over 95% Cu, Ni and As were extracted. More recently, an atmospheric alkaline sulphide leaching process for selective removal of 70 to 90% As was developed and mini-plant tested. After alkaline sulphide leaching, the dissolved arsenic is precipitated as stable basic ferric arsenate (BFA) with the addition of ferric sulfate, while the low-arsenic Cu/Ni sulfide is suitable for processing in Vale's operations elsewhere in Canada.INTRODUCTIONVale’s Thompson Nickel Refinery was commissioned in 1961 and currently it has the capacity to produce about 56,700 tonnes per year of electrolytic nickel as cathode slab and rounds products. A sulphate and chloride mixed electrolyte is used in the Thompson refining process and it typically contains 75 to 85 g/L Ni, 50 to 60 g/L Cl, 90 to 120 g/L SO4 2-, 25 to 30 g/L Na and 8 to 9 g/L boric acid. The main impurities in the Thompson anolyte are copper, cobalt, arsenic, iron and lead.The simplified Thompson electrolyte purification flowsheet is shown in Figure 1 (Oliver & Wrana, 2009, Goble & Chapman, 1986); it consists of precipitation of copper, arsenic and lead with H2S, followed by nickel replenishment with ground matte and acid and removal of cobalt and iron with Cl2 and NiCO3."

"Arsenic contained in minerals sulphides such as enargite and tennantite can represent not only a significant penalty element in base metals production, but also a disadvantage to the environment through producing the toxic emissions to the atmosphere. The achieving separation of arsenic bearing minerals either at an early stage in floatation or from the floatation concentration is significantly beneficial to the economic. However, there was no feasible commercial method of separation at the flotation stage because of its similar flotation properties with many other copper sulphides. In this work, the selective floatation of enargite from copper sulphide concentrate containing maily covllite, chalcoctie, bornite and enargite was investigated. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.2%, Cu 22% and a high arsenic bulk concentrate with As 7.65%,Cu 33.65% were obtained. It was indicated that Ca(ClO)2 is the effective depressor and the optimum floatation condition was obtained. Most enargite could be floated at pH 11 and controlling the pulp potential at 290 mV SHE. Furthermore, the arsenic removal from the high arsenic bulk concentrate by hydrometallurgy methods was study. The results showed that the reaction temperature and the concentrations of NaOH were the most important variables affecting the rate of arsenic removal. A low arsenic concentrate with As 0.24%, Cu 37.80% was obtained in the optimum leaching condition.INTRODUCTIONArsenic is mainly produced as a by-product of base metals smelting, in particular copper concentrate. China has imposed an upper limit of 0.50% arsenic for concentrates entering (Long et al., 2012). Arsenic amount of copper concentrate within 0.40% has also been imposed in China, and above which will be introduced about 50 RMB penalties per ton for each 0.10% increasing by smelters now. Therefore, it is necessary to remove arsenic from the copper concentrate.In copper concentrate, arsenic is mainly in the form of arsenopyrite (FeAsS), enargite (Cu3AsS4) or tennantite (Cu12As4S13). There are two types of arsenic in the separation of copper and arsenic: arsenopyrite and arsenic bearing copper mineral. It is easier to separate arsenopyrite from the copper sulphide by flotation in comparsion with the separation of enargite or tennantite from non-arsenic copper minerals (Pineda et al., 2015). The main difficulty in the separation of arsenic copper mineral from non-arsenic copper sulphides is their extremely similar floatability, which depends on the fact that tennantite and enargite contain high copper content (Pineda et al., 2015)."

Since 1978, most systematic studies of AMD passive treatment with limestone drains (LD) have dealt with coal mines in the United States. The authors present in this paper the first results of a triennial study initiated in 1999 on the performance of LD installed at the Ni-Cu Lorraine old mine site in Temiscamingue during a remediation plan that involved the installation of a cover with capillary barrier effects (CCBE) over the reactive pyrrhotite-rich tailings. Typically, a LD is a trench enclosed by impervious materials filled with crushed limestone and may be oxic or anoxic. Four LD (one filled with marble and 3 with dolomite) were installed at the Lorraine site. The LD have been in operation since May 1999 and are performing differently. The most contaminated mine effluent flows south and is directed towards 3 LD filled with crushed dolomite, while a 4th LD was filled with crushed marble and installed west. The LD filled with marble has been generating maximum alkalinity since the beginning of the passive treatment. Two of the dolomite drains have been generating alkalinity since mid-summer 1999, but one is not, even if a substantial pH raise was observed. A pH above 5.5 is required usually for the dolomite drains to start generating alkalinity. The installation of LD at the Lorraine site contributes significantly to the reduction of metals and sulphates loading.

Introduction In the period from 1939 to the present, Canada has experienced a remarkable industrial expansion, rising to probably seventh in rank amongst world countries. In the early part of this period, the desperate need for military supplies unloosed tremendous amounts of capital for building new factories and for expanding and converting existing facilities. Mines, factories, and other divisions of the industrial economy bent every energy toward greater and greater output. The result was an 80 per cent increase in the volume of the nation's production within a period of four years, a truly remarkable accomplishment and one in which the mining industry had a very vital part. After the critical year, 1944, the tempo of industry eased off a bit, dropping approximately 20 per cent by 1946. At this time the prospects or post-war industry were clouded by monetary and political chaos in overseas countries, by trade restrictions, and by market uncertainties. There was, of course, a pent-up demand, both at home and abroad, for civilian goods that had been curtailed during the war and for capital equipment that had been destroyed. In the midst of this world-wide uncertainty, if anyone had ventured to predict that by the end of 1950 Canada's industrial output would be back to the 1944 level and humming along at nearly twice the best pre-war pace, he would have been considered rash indeed. Yet this has been the case.

The surface roughness of unfilled rock discontinuities has a major influence on the deformational and hydraulic behaviour of discontinuous rock masses. Although it is widely recognized that surface roughness is comprised of a large-scale (waviness) and small-scale (unevenness) components, most investigations of surface roughness have been restricted to small fracture surfaces (< 1m2). Hence, the influences of the large-scale components of roughness are often neglected. Furthermore, these investigations typically focus on analyzing roughness in terms of two-dimensional profiles rather than the complete three-dimensional geometry, which can lead to potentially biased estimates of roughness. This contribution demonstrates the use of a new optical digital measurement system, based on the principle of triangulation, to digitize a large-scale natural rock discontinuity surface at both outcrop-scale (~6m x 2m) and lab-scale (~100mm x 100mm). Subsequently, the digitized surfaces are systematically analyzed using the three-dimensional roughness methodology proposed by Grasselli to investigate the dependency of roughness on sample window size and measurement resolution.

Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was described in a paper in Copper/Cobre 03. Four years on, the technology is operating at a full scale production facility.Hindustan Zinc Limited expanded their capacity by installing the AUSMELT process. The process proceeds through smelting, slag reduction, slag cleaning and holding stages sequentially in the same vessel, resulting in widely varying off gas characteristics. The off gas is suitable for treatment is a conventional acid plant for a modest proportion of the day, but at other times produces off gas too high in S02 to be discharged to atmosphere. Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing Technology was identified as a means of effectively removing the S02 down to low levels from the off gas during all stages of the pyrometallurgical process. Furthermore, the Cansolv® S02 Scrubbing System Technology produces high purity S02 that allowed for the captured S02 to be directed to an existing acid plant, avoiding the capital cost of new acid making capacity.
