The Adra tunnel near Naramata BC experienced a fire in 2010 that burned timber sets within the tunnel and caused severe spalling of rock from the roof and tunnel walls. The nature of the damage is documented and efforts completed to rehabilitate and open a portion of this tunnel to the public are described. The use of shortcrete and rock bolts is a technically and economically superior support system to timber sets as well as being far more fire resistant.

"The gently-dipping Devonian dolomite beds south of Great Slave lake in northern Canada are nearly every-where concealed by a cover of glacial drift and muskeg. Nevertheless, in 1898 or earlier, four small outcropping areas of dolomite, richly mineralized with lead and zinc sulphides, were discovered. Exploration work performed here up to the end of 1930, included intensive trenching and drilling of the showings, together with mapping and wide-spaced drilling in the surrounding region. This work proved that the discoveries are isolated pockets of mineralization much too small to be commercially valuable by themselves. No evidence of orebodies elsewhere was reported.Meanwhile, mapping by the G.S.C. in the Shield far to the east disclosed major Precambrian faults, some of which can be projected southwesterly (under a cover of Paleozoic sediments) to the vicinity of Pine Point. During the period from 1940 to 1947, consideration was given, by The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Company Ltd., to evidence of a theoretical possibility that, although apparently dormant in Paleozoic times, these faults may have provided a structural control and a source of ore-bearing solutions in some post-Devonian period. From this, it was postulated that the breaks might have created, in the overlying dolomite, a linear array of orebodies concealed by overburden but lying in a belt of considerable length and in a position predictable within practical limits. A program of drilling designed to test and exploit this specific concept was conducted from 1948 to 1955.he drilling within the new, theoretically-defined search area resulted in the discovery of many lead-zinc ore-bodies, none of which was exposed at the surface. Some of these are large and (as indicated by 1965 production records) very rich. They are situated 1 to several miles distant from, and apparently not connected to, the earlier-known surface discoveries. The drilling also disclosed that the ore, which consists of disseminated sphalerite and galena replacements together with colloform sphalerite and coarse galena cavity fillings, occurs mainly at certain stratigraphic horizons within a large, coarsely-recrystallized dolomite barrier reef. Considerable fracturing and folding was found. It has been suggested that reef development was influenced by post-Precambrian tectonic movements associated with the old faults in the basement complex. The ore may have been deposited by solutions moving from distant sources to favourable structural and chemical environments in or related to the reef.In more recent exploration performed in the course of preparing for mining production, the rate of ore discovery within the same general geological context has been greatly accelerated by the use of new geophysical techniques and drilling equipment. Reserves of 21.5 million tons, averaging 4 per cent lead and 7.2 per cent zinc, were reported in 1965, and production from open pits at the rate of approximately 248,000 tons of concentrates per year is in progress"

Shore Gold Inc. (Shore) is presently designing a diamond processing plant for the Star and the Orion South kimberlite deposits in the Fort à la Corne (FalC) area in central Saskatchewan. The first step in the plant is diamond liberation and occurs in the comminution section. Diamond liberation is the process of breaking up the kimberlite rock, as gently as possible so as not to damage the diamonds. Autogenous grinding mills (AG mills) use a combination of impact crushing, abrasion and attrition to break up the kimberlite. The forces that occur during the actions of abrasion and attrition cause the kimberlites to break up preferentially along lines of weaknesses which offers a ?diamond friendly? method of comminution. Hard competent kimberlite is commonly found in the diatreme zone as well as the root zone of the volcanic pipe and is the source of kimberlite for most of the Southern African diamond mines. Softer kimberlite is typically found in and around the crater area of a volcanic pipe and it is this kimberlite that makes up the majority of kimberlite for both the Star and Orion South deposits. These softer kimberlites can be readily broken up using abrasion and attrition imparted by AG mills. In order for Shore to benefit from the softer kimberlite found in the Star - Orion South diamond project, two large (10.97 m diameter x 7.10 m long) AG mills were designed for the comminution section based on extensive test work and simulations by Metso Minerals (Metso).

This study presents a method for the determination of intra-particle diffusivities in ion-exchange resins for the purposes of evaluating the state of resin degradation during service. The method uses a zero length column (ZLC) in a closed circuit with variable speed pump and reservoir. The intra-particle diffusion is determined from absorption data by using the Nernst-Plank approximation along with the ‘mass transfer factor’ - which is a product of the mass transfer coefficient (kf )and the concentration of the adsorbing ion in the liquid at the surface of the resin - in a computer algorithm fitting simulated curves to experimental data.. Through this approach the changed intra-particle diffusivity, of a gel-type acid resin, over a 1000 loading and elution cycles, is shown.

"Noranda has successfully developed and implemented two leading-edge mineral exploration technologies — hyperspectral remote sensing and 3-D seismic surveying. Airborne hyperspectral imaging provides detailed geological and mineralogical mapping capability at both a regional and project scale that facilitates improved selection of prospective terrain and an accelerated exploration cycle. Noranda, in partnership with Falconbridge, has licensed the exclusive use of the Earth Search Sciences Inc. (ESSI) Probe-1 hyperspectral scanners (128- channel, 0.43 µm to 2.5 µm spectral range) that are capable of mapping in excess of 3500 km2 per day at 10 m pixel resolution. The technology has been successfully deployed on four continents over a broad range of terrain from desert to boreal forest and the high Arctic.To augment the company’s deep search initiatives, Noranda has successfully modified and implemented existing 3-D seismic technology to help targeting massive sulphides located at depths ranging from 500 m to 2000 m. In the fall of 1998 and early 1999, Noranda completed an 18 km2, 3-D seismic program in eastern Canada by successfully drill testing acoustic impedance anomalies locating massive sulphides at depths in excess of 1100 m."

MAGNESIA refractories and magnesium metal are both essential war commodities. The need for magnesium, which had just made its debut as a commercial metal a few years before the outbreak of the present war, is widely known because this new and valuable light metal has already received much publicity. Less widely known but equally important in the war effort are magnesia refractories. They are indispensable to the efficient functioning of the great metallurgical plants producing steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, where, because of their resistance to extreme high temperature and chemical attack, they are used in lining the furnaces, which are operated at a white heat. The demand for refractories in the metallurgical industries rose rapidly upon the outbreak of war, and now, in consequence of the continued great expansion under way in the manufacture of steel, nickel, copper, and other metals, the need for magnesia is greater than ever. Since 1915, part of the Canadian requirements of basic refractories has been supplied from the deposits of magnesitic dolomite in Argenteuil county, Quebec. The products from these deposits are excellent for many uses, but the magnesitic dolomite has too high a content of silica and lime to be used in making a type of magnesia brick required in nickel converters, and in the roofs of reverberatory furnaces used in the copper and steel industries. There is now a large and growing demand in Canada for bricks and shapes for these uses. This demand has always been supplied from the United States. Makers of these products in the United States, in turn, formerly imported most of the necessary high-grade, dead-burned magnesia from Austria and Manchuria. Not only are these sources closed, but refractory chrome ore from the Philippines is no longer available and chrome refractories may have to be in large part replaced by magnesia.

An account is given of investigations into the application of two neutron methods to the on-line analysis of slurries. One deals with the application of the neutron moisture gauge principle to the determination of the water content of iron oxide slurries, and the other with the application of gamma radiation from thermal-neutron-capture to the determination of the composition of aqueous slurries of iron oxide, copper oxide, zinc oxide and sulphur. Linear relationships were found between the composition of the slurry and the neutron count-rate in the first study, and between the slurry composition and the prompt-gamma-ray count-rate in the second study. A mathematical relationship has also been developed which relates changes in the prompt-gamma-ray counts from hydrogen to changes in slurry composition.

Kimber/ires are intrusive rocks whose main constituenr, olivine, has been altered entirely or almosr enrirely ro serpentine. Texture usually is porphyritic, superimposed upon a brecciared one. Diamonds are found only in kimberlites, and are present in economic quantities only in about I% of all kimberlites known. Two glacial drift diamonds, one near Peterborough and one near Timmins, both in Ontario, have been found in Canada and are believed to have been eroded and rransporred from their original source by glaciers. Many more glacial drift diamonds have been found sourh of rhe Great Lakes in the United States, parricularly in Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin . There are nine known kimberlire occurrences in Canada. Diamonds have been located in rwo of rhem: on lie Bizard near Monrreal and on Somerset Island in the Northwesr Terrirories. The lie Bizard occurrence comprises three kimberlire diarremes; samples of rhe largest one revealed JO riny diamonds totalling 0.0537 carars. The Somerset Island kimberlites are rhe mosr significant yet discovered in Canada. Ar leasr 19 separare kimberlite occurrences are known on rhe island. Testing by Diapros Canada Lim ired, however, revealed only "a few small diamonds". fr is likely rhar, wirh enough time and funds, additional kimberlires, possibly bearing economic quanriries of diamonds, will be found in Canada.

The corrosion resistance of die-cast and freely-solidified and electromagnetically-stirred thixocast AZ91D alloy has been studied using electrochemical noise technique in a 0.05M NaCI solution at pH 6.1 and 25°C. Specimens polished at different depths were immersed for a period of 75 min in order to assess the influence of the microstructure on corrosion kinetics and morphology. At depths between 10 and 50 µm (skin), all specimens showed general non-uniform corrosion with the lowest corrosion resistance. Between 100 and 200 µmn (interior skin), the observed corrosion was accompanied by superficial undefined pits due to metastable pitting. The corrosion form for 100-200 µm gave the best corrosion resistance. Stable pitting corrosion was observed beyond 400 µm deep on the bulk specimens. The skin of all thixocast specimens prepared billets showed a more corroded surface than that of die-cast. The interior skin as well as the bulk specimens showed better performance than that of the die-cast specimens.

Since the first commercial plant was built at Mount Isa, another twenty ISASMELT™ furnaces have come into commercial operation, and construction of new plants continues. The primary copper ISASMELT™ top submerged lance (TSL) technology continues to attract interest from potential users who seek to smelt productively. In addition to the known benefits of productivity and flexibility, ISASMELT™ operators have also achieved improvements to energy efficiency when switching from their previous technologies. The recent production statistics for operation at Tuticorin, India show that ISASMELT™ has taken the first steps into territory beyond 400,000 t/y (copper cathode basis) and this will likely be the scale chosen by future new copper smelters operating purely on a toll smelting basis. "The Cordillera contains numerous porphyry deposits and prospects, many containing economic quantities of copper, molybdenum, gold and tungsten. Over the lost twenty years, different phases of exploration have been driven by individual commodity prices and new discoveries. Exploration methods have remained largely unchanged since the 1960s and 1970s with the range of techniques chosen for each situation depending on the stage of the program, the type of porphyry target and the local environment. Improvements or changes to techniques have resulted from awareness of specific features in new deposits or regional problems. During the last ten years much of the emphasis has been on the re-evaluation of known porphyry deposits with more exploration in areas previously recognized as prospective. Re-evaluation of known deposits has resulted in increased reserves, often with improved gold grade, and the discovery of new zones. Several new deposits have been discovered including gold-only deposits of probable porphyry affinity.Research related to porphyry deposits has followed trends in exploration and has been directed toward the type of deposits that have been of current interest. In addition to research on specific deposits and areas, general research related to porphyry deposits has addressed three broad themes. The first theme involves the role of tectonic processes and the nature of source regions. Although different in detail, recent tectonic models suggest that a tectonic change or hiatus may be important for the generation of metal-rich magmas from various source regions and subsequent fractionation that permits volatile saturation. The second theme is based on magmatic processes, particularly the generation of a volatile phase enriched in metals. This research supports the general orthomagmatic model for porphyry deposits and has helped to define the influence of specific variables in the generation of different types of porphyry deposits. Finally, research on alteration and mineralization has provided evidence for different types of fluids and fluid processes involved in the formation of porphyry deposits. These data also support the orthomagmatic model but indicate additional complexity in magmatic-hydrothermal systems including the role of external fluids. Although important advances have been made, research has had a limited impact on exploration.Exploration and research on deposits that occur in the peripheral and upper parts of porphyry systems have been important over the last ten years. Although considerable advances have been made, the relationship of different styles of peripheral mineralization to magmatic processes in the core of the system remains ambiguous. An improved understanding of the processes that generate zoning, peripheral mineralization, and the surrounding alteration envelopes would be beneficial to exploration."

"Quebec Cartier Mining Company is currently mining a low-grade iron ore deposit in northeastern Quebec. The Company is producing some 8,000,000 dry gross tons of concentrates per year, grading about 66 per cent iron. The pit, which is located on the keel or hinge line of a fold, will eventually be about 1,000 feet deep with a surface area of 8,000 by 2,600 feet. The most significant structural discontinuities in the mine are the natural bedding planes and secondary perpendicular joints. The exposed walls are subjected to a sub-Arctic climate and heavy blasting occurs approximately six times a month.QCM utilizes design and operating techniques to control rock fall. Steps are also being taken to analyze the ultimate over-all pit slope stability."

Cable supports offer several advantages over traditional secondary support methods by enhancing stress redistribution to pillars and gob areas, minimizing or eliminating timbers and cribs that reduce ventilation, eradicating material-handling injuries related to placement of crib supports, and providing a cost-effective alternative to secondary support. The U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), researching alternatives to traditional roof support methods, designed and installed high-strength cable supports to improve the stability of longwall gate road entries in a western U.S. coal mine. With the cooperation of industry, methods were developed to install and evaluate cable supports in a tailgate area using traditional resin cartridges. The cable-bolted areas successfully maintained roof support throughout the developed entries. Cable supports have replaced wood cribbing as secondary support in the bleeder entry system and have minimized or eliminated the use of cribbing in the longwall tailgate entries. This paper describes the theory, application, and advantages of cable supports and presents some mine measurements made to assess the cable performance during the retreat process of longwall mining.

The Mining industry faces many challenges, one of which is the demand to communicate over a variety of media, be it visual, sound, voice, data or any combination. Over the years multiple infrastructures have been put in place to overcome environmental obstacles and address these communication needs. A mine is an aggressive environment for electronic equipment and as such only the best quality equipment can perform under those special conditions of e.g. temperature, dust and humidity. Siemens Canada and its partner LComm will discuss a mining solution using a unique combination of technologies based on fibre optics, standard communication interfaces, passive antenna infrastructure and wireless services. The presentation looks at maximizing the use of infrastructure, reducing costs, addressing difficulty of communications coverage above and below the surface and the capability to future proof the capital investment as new requirements and applications are identified. "A pressure non-oxidative leach is employed at Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners to extract nickel from a slow cooled matte. The design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves in parallel to achieve a nickel extraction of 60% at the nameplate capacity of 32.4 ktpa nickel plated. Isothermal modelling of mineralogical and chemical concentration profiles, through a reactive mass balance, permitted rate constant parameter estimation and selection of the most probable reaction pathway. The model was validated with plant data up to a capacity of 26 ktpa Ni plated and suggested by extrapolation that nameplate capacity may be viable through one 80 m3 autoclave.INTRODUCTION Anglo American Platinum Base Metal Refiners is situated on the outskirts of Rustenburg in the North-West province of South-Africa. The refinery produces nickel cathode, copper cathode, cobalt sulphate powder, covellite rich copper pressure leach residue and bulk sodium sulphate through an integrated circuit that refines slow cooled converter matte. The converter matte is milled, non-magnetics are separated as solid nickel copper matte (NCM), and the magnetics are leached yielding a pressure vessel liquor (PVL). The remaining solid platinum group metals (PGM) concentrate after leaching is sent for downstream processing in the Precious Metals Refinery (Hofirek & Kerfoot, 1992). The work presented here is applicable to the base metals refinery which receives the two base metals feed stocks NCM and PVL. In 2009 the capacity of the refinery was upgraded from 21 ktpa nickel cathode plated to 32.4 ktpa. This paper deals with evaluating the capacity of the pressurised non-oxidative nickel leach (NOX) process which accounts for at least 28% of the nickel leached from NCM by design. The NOX design base requires two 80 m3 autoclaves divided into four compartments operated in parallel at 155°C and 600kPa(g). Elevated temperature is required to speed up the leach kinetics of particularly nickel and iron which are trapped in slow leaching mineralogical phases namely millerite and bornite, (Dinham, 2006). The stated equivalent capacity for the NOX configuration was 32.9 ktpa nickel plated at first pass nickel and iron leach efficiencies of 60% and above 80% respectively and is a key step for the selective removal of iron (Bryson, Hofirek, Collins, Stiksma, & Bereaowsky, 2008)."

"The coal industry is an important part of Canada's economy - as an energy source, employer, and generator of export earnings. Coal comprises 71% of our fossil energy and with rapidly advancing handling and burning technology will clearly play a major role in our national energy mix, eventually as synthetic gases and liquids.International coal markets are very competitive and Canada is disadvantaged by long rail hauls to port, and a heavy tax burden. However, high mine productivity has allowed us to increase our markets.Currently, domestic markets are dominated by coal use for electrical generation, a market with significant growth opportunities.Strong growth is expected in export thermal markets, while metallurgical coal demand is projected to show little or no growth in the medium term. IntroductionThe coal industry is a vital part of the Canadian energy scene .• Coal supplies 17% of Canada's energy.• On a per capita basis, Albertans use more energy in the form of coal than they do oil and gas.• The value of Canada's exports of coal last year was equal in value to all the cars we imported from Japan.• Coal is our largest single export to our seco nd largest trading partner, Japan.• The value of coal produced in Canada exceeds the value of any other single mineral produced in thi s country.• In Alberta, the safety record for coal mines is on a par with that of department store clerks.• The coal industry employs about 25% of the total number of people employed in all metal mines in Canada, directly and indirectly accounting for about 50 000 jobs.Coal comprises 71% of Canada' s hydrocarbon energy resources on a crude oil equivalent basis . This is more than double our oil sands resource and dwarfs our conventional crude oil and gas resources (Fig. I). In the short term, coal as a solid fuel plays a significant part in the Canadian energy scene. In the longer term, coal, in the form of electricity and eventually liquids and gases, has a tremendous role to play. In 1986, Canada produced 57.8 million tonnes, slightly down from the record high of 60.8 million tonnes in 1985. Our exports in 1986 were 26.0 million tonnes, a growth of 53% in three years."

The concept and practices of co-extraction of coal and methane have emerged in recent years to improve coal mining safety and productivity, utilise methane resources, and reduce fugitive emissions in environments that involve multiple coal seams with low gas permeability. The system of co-extraction integrates two previously separate operations of coal extraction and methane drainage. The coal mining operation reduces the coal seam gas pressure and creates strata fractures that enhance gas migration and capture from mine workings and surrounding coal seams. An effective methane drainage operation produces a consistent and quality clean energy product and, at the same time, reduces the methane concentration in underground workings and the methane content and pressure in the adjacent coal seams. This is a significant benefit in preventing gas explosions and outbursts, and promotes a safer and more productive coal mining environment. In addition, the co-extraction with enhanced utilisation of coal mine methane directly leads to a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. Presented in this paper are key results and outcomes of a major Asia Pacific Partnership project carried out from 2008?2012 by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation in collaboration with Huainan Mining Industry (Group) Co. Ltd., to develop and demonstrate advanced technologies at Pansan mine, Huainan, that promote the concept and practices of co-extraction of coal and methane. A comprehensive approach was adopted to assess fundamental strata and coal seam methane conditions during mining, and optimise mining sequences and coal mine methane capture systems. The project has not only demonstrated a practical approach and procedures of advanced co-extraction of coal and methane systems but also delivered significant benefits and outcomes in improved mining safety and efficiency, increased methane capture and utilisation, and reduced fugitive methane emissions at the Pansan mine. The total mine gas drained increased from 25.36 Mm3 in 2007 to 47.0 Mm3 in 2011, and the mine gas utilisation increased from 4.94 Mm3 in 2007 to 21.15 Mm3 in 2011. The improved methane capture resulted in reduced coal and gas outburst risks and methane concentration levels at the mine workings, provided a safe working environment for coal production, boosted the mining efficiency, and eliminated methane related incidents over the last few years at Pansan mine.

Of the f ive Canadian cement producing regions- Atlantic, Quebec, Ontario, Prairie and Pacific-Ontario has the greatest capacity and normally produces the most cement. However, during the last 5 years the greatest activity within the industry in Canada has been in the Prairie and Pacific regions where major capacity increases have taken place. Most Canadian cement companies produce normal Portland, high-earlystrength Portland and sulphate resisting Portland cements. Some companies also manufacture moderate Portland cement, and low-heat-of-hydration Portland cement. Escalating energy costs highlight the need for technology research into more energy-efficient equipment for the energy-intensive cement industry. The industry is well integrated and plants are well situated to support construction in Canada. Expansion into the United States has become common during the past decade.

During 1958, prospecting parties working for the Mackenzie Syndicate in the Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories, identified tungsten mineralization and located the property now being developed by the Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. Scheelite mineralization, associated with pyrrhotite and minor chalcopyrite, occurs in lime silicate skarn replacement zones within a limestone-chert-argillite series intruded by granitic dykes originating from the ? main batholithic mass underlying the sedimentary beds. The results of surface outcrop sampling and 15,000 feet of grid-pattern diamond drilling have been combined to outline an orebody estimated to contain 1.32 million tons, grading 2.51 per cent WO after applying a 10 per cent dilution factor for mining purposes. T HE property of Canada Tungsten Mining Corporation Ltd. is located in the upper Flat River area of the Mackenzie mountains, Northwest Territories. Skarn-type replacement deposits containing scheelite mineralization are .situated between elevations of 4,500 and 5,500 feet above sea level along the east flank of the mountain range forming the boundary between the Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories. The nearest supply center for the area is Watson Lake, Yukon Territory, located at Milepost 635 on the Alaska Highway.
