Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several 'industrial minerals', including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

"Of the 135 current or past-producing 'gold-only' mines in the Superior Province of the Canadian Shield which have produced more than 100,000 tons of ore, the 33 mines which have produced one million ounces or more of gold have accounted for over 84o/o of the total production of 137 million ounces. The published literature on these 33 deposits was reviewed in order to determine the geological setting of the mineralization on a regional (mining camp) and local (mine) scale. The dominant rock types underlying the mining camps are mafic, variolitic, tholeiitic volcanic rocks with a significant ultramafic (komatiitic) component, and clastic and/ or exhalative sedimentary rocks. Felsic volcanic rocks are generally subordinate. Most mining camps are located at or near the top of the mafic-ultramafic sequence, and generally there is a major sedimentary-volcanic contact present which may be 1) a stratigraphic superposition of volcanic and sedimentary units, 2) a rapid, along-strike gradation from dominantly volcanic to dominantly sedimentary units due to facies change, or to the formation of structurally controlled sedimentary basins during volcanism, or 3) frequently (at 40o/o of the camps) a juxtaposition of sedimentary and volcanic sequences across a major fault zone or 'break', which in many instances may represent a reactivated, syn-volcanic basin-margin fault.In contrast to the regional setting, on a local or mine scale over 90o/o of the 33 mines contain felsic intrusions and/ or extrusions within mine workings. The felsic rocks may be quartzbearing (commonly quartz-feldspar porphyries) or dominantly quartz-free (commonly feldspar porphyry syenites or monzonites), and appear to have been emplaced in two different depth-zone environments: an epizonal intrusive environment, and a volcanic vent environment. Although the distinction between epizonal intrusive and volcanic intrusive-extrusive rocks is uncertain in many deposits, the two are tentatively separated on the basis of the grain size of the rock matrix (medium to coarse grained vs aphanitic to fine grained), homogeneity (multi-phased and/ or compositionally zoned vs compositionally homogeneous), and the shape and relationship to stratigraphy of the igneous body (circular or oval in cross section, and cutting the stratigraphy at a low angle vs lenticular and either stratiform or cutting the stratigraphy at a high angle). In addition, felsic intrusions of the volcanic environment commonly grade into tuffs or breccias of extrusive origin, whereas epizonal intrusions do not.Stratiform ore zones of possible exhalative sedimentary origin appear to be confined to deposits in which volcanic felsic rocks are present, and are absent from deposits in which only epizonal felsic intrusions are present. Pervasive carbonate- rich alteration, commonly in roughly stratabound zones of regional extent, and carbonate-rich chemical sedimentary rocks are present in over three-quarters of the deposits containing quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but are much less common in deposits with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. The host sequences of epizonal felsic intrusions which are quartzfree are more commonly sedimentary than those of quartz-bearing epizonal felsic intrusions.Quartz, carbonate minerals, arsenopyrite, scheelite, tourmaline and Cr-muscovite ('juchsite') are the most common mineralogical associates of gold. Arsenopyrite is essentially restricted to the volcanic environment, occurring in about twothirds of the deposits with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks and less than half of the deposits with quartz-free volcanic rocks. Tourmaline, on the other hand, is almost ubiquitous in deposits associated with epizonal intrusions and also occurs in about two-thirds of the deposits associated with quartz-bearing felsic volcanic rocks, but in only one of the eight deposits associated with quartz-free felsic volcanic rocks. Blind boring of shafts is becoming an increasingly important part of shaft sinking. Blind-bored shafts have reached diameters of 25 It in Europe and 16-1/2 ft in the United States. Much of the technology developed for blind boring has evolved from the technology of drilling wells for oil and gas production. Blind boring offers economic advantage in a number of situations where conventional shaft sinking either is extremely difficult or very expensive by virtue of large-capacity aquifers which must be penetrated, unstable ground or where very rapid sinking is required. In sedimentary rocks, blind boring is cost competitive with conventional sinking, in diameters of about 12 ft or less. Blind boring is not competitive with raise boring where conditions are favourable for raise boring. Blind boring does, however, offer greater flexibility than raise boring and can be performed in situations where raise boring is inefficient or impossible. Combination machinery has been developed to perform both blind boring and raise boring, so that the machine can be used effectively in situations where only the near-surface portions of the shaft are unfavourable for raise boring. Development work is being supported by the United States Bureau of Mines for blind boring equipment capable of boring shafts up to 30 feet in diameter.

Injection of biomass into blast furnace as alternative reducing agent is so effective for the purpose of mitigation of carbon dioxide emissions from steel industries, because biomass is considered to be carbon neutral raw materials. Certain amount of Palm Kernel Shell (PKS) is abandoned after Palm oil extraction process. To use as a reducing agent of blast furnace, PKS was carbonized and classified by 100 mesh sieve. To examine the gasification behavior of PKS carbide under the blast furnace conditions, several combustion experiments were conducted using hot model experimental furnace. The experimental results showed that the gasification efficiency of PKS carbide increased as the quantity of volatile matter increased. This tendency is the almost the same for the pulverized coal, so carbide of PKS can be used at blast furnace at appropriate amount of volatile matter that can be controlled by carbonization condition. In addition, the pressure drop of the furnace tends to decrease because the amount of ash in PKS carbide may be smaller than that of pulverized coal. PKS carbide is a suitable reducing agent in that respect.

Since addressing the Institute a year ago on The Future of the Copper Industry (l), many things have happened, most of them bad. It has been a hard year for profits and prophets. It was, therefore, with consider-able perturbation that I accepted the gracious invitation of your Committee to reappear. On reviewing my remarks of a year ago, I. have wondered whether, under pressure of more important matters, the Committee had neglected to make a note of them, or whether they felt that further explanations from me were in order. In either event, I am glad that I am here and welcome the opportunity to make any contribution I can to a clearer understanding of the problems of copper to those concerned. The English-speaking nations own 80 per cent of the present world-production of the metal. Col. P. E. Barbour, Secretary of the Mining and Metallurgical Society of America, and I recently completed an estimate of the known world resources of copper. We placed the figure, in round numbers, at 100,000,000 tons of metal. Of this amount, about one-third lies in the United States, one-third in the British Empire, and one-third in South America; and all but 4 per cent of this is owned by British Empire and United States capital. Our figures do not include any estimates for Russia, Japan, or Europe, on which there are no available data. It is true, consequently, that the British Empire and the United States are the ones concerned. It seems to me to be a matter of great importance to the world at large, and of even greater importance to those nations themselves, that the known sources of supply of this metal, so essential both in peace and war, rest so strongly in their hands. I cannot believe that in the long run they will neglect their responsibilities in the wise administration of these resources.

Stellite-6 coatings were formulated on two Ni-base superalloys, namely Superni 75 and Superni 600, by a shrouded plasma-spray process, and the oxidation behaviour of these coatings has been investigated in air and in an aggressive environment of Na2SO4- 60%V2O5. Accelerated oxidation tests were conducted in a silicon-carbide tube furnace under cyclic conditions at an elevated temperature of 900°C for 50 cycles. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating and 20 min cooling in air. A thermogravimetric technique was used to approximate the oxidation kinetics. The corrosion scales were characterised by XRD, SEM/EDAX and EPMA analysis. It has been observed that the coatings nearly followed the parabolic rate law of oxidation. Overall weight gain conceived in air was just 51% of that in the aggressive environment in the case of coated Superni 75, whereas in case of coated Superni 600, the cumulative weight gain in air was found to be one-third of that in the Na2SO4-60% V2O5 atmosphere. Furthermore, the coating showed very good adherence to both of the substrates during the course of air oxidation, whereas some superficial cracks were observed near the edges of the specimens during the molten salt induced oxidation. XRD analysis revealed the presence of phase-like CoO, CoCr2O4 and Cr2O3 in the oxide scales, which are reported be protective against high-temperature oxidation. The XRD results were further supported by SEM/EDAX and EPMA.

"Abstract- ln 1986, anomalous sampling results for heavy minerals were obtained at various sites in Namaqualand on the west coast of the Cape Province. Drilling in 1987 at Graauwduinen penetrated up to 35 meters of heavy mineral-bearing Tertiary sands which extend several kilometers inland from the coast. The heavy mineral suite includes ilmenite, rutile, leucoxene, zircon and monazite, along with garnet, pyroxene and amphibole. Three deposits are recognized, two of which comprise the resource to be mined by Namakwa Sands Limited, a recently formed Anglo American Corporation subsidiary company.Mineable reserves in excess of 500 million tonnes have been delineated, sufficient to sustain mining for over 35 years at projected production rates. During the feasibility study, on-site investigations included test mining at various sites to assess mineability and to provide material for metallurgical testing in a pilot plant located at the site. Ilmenite produced at the mine will be smelted at a new facility to be built at Saldanha Bay . Saleable products comprise titania-rich slag, pig iron, zircon and rutile.During the exploration phase, company environmental guidelines were established and monitored. The feasibility study incorporated a Class 1 Environmental Impact Report, the contents of which were made public following the principles of the Integrated Environmental Management legislation."

"As part of an over-all arsenic management strategy, Inco has developed a novel process that converts a by-product high moisture copper/arsenic sulphide precipitate into a crystalline copper arsenate suitable for the manufacture of wood preservation chemicals.The copper/arsenic sulphide precipitate is atmospherically leached with oxygen and sulphuric acid, producing a crude (blue) copper arsenate precipitate, elemental sulphur, and a copper and nickel containing solution. The blue copper arsenate is dissolved with sulphuric acid, the molar Cu/As ratio is raised to 2, and a crystalline copper arsenate (olivenite) is precipitated by the addition of sodium carbonate. Dissolved copper is recovered using metallic nickel (or matte) and elemental sulphur, to produce a low-moisture (low-arsenic) precipitate suitable for standard nickel-copper processing.The process was successfully piloted at Inco's Manitoba Division between September 1990 and June 1991. The copper arsenate product typically analyzed 43% Cu and 25% As, and the moisture content was about 10%."

"Fording Coal Ltd. is now in its fifth year of a 15-year contract to supply 3 million long tons of clean coal per annum to its Japanese steel-making customers. The mine employs both conventional truck-shovel and unconventional ""walking"" dragline coal mining techniques in multiple-seam pits. This paper describes the present and future application of the 60-cu.-yd dragline and truck-shovel pre-stripping fleet in 1•ecovering 5- to 40-footthick coal seams in mountainous terrain. Deep blastholes, coal flow demands, spring ""run-off"", seam and inter-seam thrust faulting, limited seam outcrop data and regional faulting are a few of the problems encountered in this application. The author discusses these problems and their solutions as applied at Fording Coal Ltd."

A new era in pressure hydrometallurgy is marked when the roasting - leaching - electrowinning process in the zinc industry was replaced by direct pressure leaching of zinc concentrate. Since then, the technology has received recognition as the technology of the future. Large autoclaves of unprecedented size have been manufactured and installed in a number of metallurgical plants for recovering copper and nickel from their concentrates or liberating gold from its refractory ores. An attempt to recover alumina from clay using pressure technology is underway. Autoclaves lined with acid resisting bricks or with titanium clad may weigh as much as 800 tonnes were transported successfully from the manufacturing workshop to the mine site over long distances.

"Certain environmental problems can substantially alter the physical properties of the subsurface. In such cases, geophysical methods can be used to map the distribution of subsurface contamination or buried wastes prior to drilling or sampling. For example, inorganic contamination by acids, bases, salts, or metallic ions can be detected by instruments that measure ground conductivity; metallic objects such as buried drums, pipelines, etc. can be located by magnetic survey, and radioactive mine waste can be mapped by radiometric techniques. Geophysical methods can also be used to characterize site geology. If carried out prior to development, they can assist in identifying areas of high- and low permeability and sources of natural contamination. The methods can also be used to establish baseline values and to locate stable areas for development of environmentally sensitive facilities. Application of geophysical methods to environmental problems is illustrated with examples from base-metal mines, uranium operations, and potash and oil-sands operations. Particular attention is given to the problem of acid mine drainage. =IntroductionGeophysical methods have been used for many years by the mining industry in exploration and geotechnical investigations. The basic techniques for mapping variations in physical properties of the subsurface have been adapted to meet the special needs of resource exploration and development in the coal, potash , oil sands, industrial minerals, precious metals, and base-metal industries. Now the mining industry is facing another challenge: to operate the mining cycle, from discovery to closure, with minimum impact on the environment. This involves the rehabilitation of abandoned mining sites, the minimization and effective containment of pollutants at operating and developing sites, and the longterm containment and monitoring of sites after mine closures.Some of the most difficult aspects of environmental control and monitoring relate to the location of buried waste and contaminated fluids in the subsurface. As in the search for buried ore deposits or in geotechnical investigations, geophysics can be a valuable aid in subsur face environmental investigations. Investigations can be remedial , involving the location or monitoring of existing problems, or preventative, where problem areas are identified or background values are established before site development. In either case, geophysical methods should not be considered as a substitute for drilling. Geophysical interpretations in general do not provide the detail required for a complete environmental or geotechnical investigation. They are most useful as rapid reconnaissance methods for targeting subsequent drilling or for interpreting subsurface condit ions away from drill holes. Table I lists the common geophysical methods and the physical properties to which they are sensitive."

IN the year 1933, workings at the No. 12 colliery, New Waterford, of the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, had advanced to a point where additional ventilation would soon be required. Furthermore, development of the mine was being .made to practically double the output of coal. Consequently, authorization was given to sink a shaft to the workings. The location selected is on the west side of the mine, about one and a half miles from the slope mouth and on the Low Point shore, some 250 feet from high-water mark. The cliff at this point is 40 feet high, with the land rising on a slope of about 5 per cent to the shaft. Figure 1 shows the location with reference to the colliery workings. The strata through which the shaft was to be sunk were pretty well known from diamond-drill borings previously made, and it was believed that water would be encountered to a depth of at least 250 feet to 300 feet. It was planned, therefore, to seal-off the water by the pumping of cement grout under high pressure. This method was considered to be the most economical means of handling the water during sinking, and would also result in a permanently dry shaft. Figure 2 shows a cross-section of the strata. The permanent shaft hoist and fan were to be electrically driven, which would necessitate the construction of a transmission line between the colliery and the shaft; therefore, it was arranged that the sinking equipment would have electric drive. As all equipment, materials used in construction, and supplies were to be hauled by truck, a roadway 1,800 feet long was required from the main highway to the site, and as heavy loads would be hauled during the fall, winter, and succeeding spring, this road was ballasted with 18 inches of clinkered material obtained from a burned culm bank one and a half miles distant. Actual field work was begun by the Company's own forces early in October. Work preparatory to sinking-in addition to the roadway and trans-mission line-included the construction of the reinforced-concrete shaft collar and fan drift connection; the permanent timber headframe (which was to be used also as the sinking headframe); the permanent reinforced-concrete building to house the shaft hoist and fan drive; and the erection of temporary buildings and installation of all equipment for sinking and lining the shaft and for cementation.

Since its inception, in 1987, the Copper-Cobre series of conferences has established itself as the prime world forum for discussing advances in copper process metallurgy, in particular copper sulfide smelting, copper recovery by leaching and electrowinning and copper electrorefining. All copper producing countries have actively participated in the pyrometallurgy symposia held in the framework of these conferences. In 1999 and 2003, the close to 100 pyrometallurgy papers that were presented had to be accommodated in two volumes. In the present paper, the authors firstly provide a brief historical sketch of the Copper-Cobre conferences and then focus on providing a retrospective look at the dramatic changes that have taken place in copper smelting in the last few decades, primarily as discussed in the Copper-Cobre and precursor conferences pyrometallurgy proceedings. Topics include: the development of autogenous, increasingly more intensive, environmentally sound and energy efficient smelting processes; significant improvements in Peirce-Smith converting practice and at the same time the commercialization of alternative continuous converting routes; the consequent expansion and modernization of smelters; the increasing compliance with strict government environmental regulations in most copper producing regions of the world; the realignment of the copper smelting industry throughout the world; and trends in copper smelting R&D. A look at the future closes these reflections on the contribution of the Copper-Cobre conferences to the advancement of copper smelting technology.

Selective separation of minerals from complex sulphide ores is a challenging task and it is often difficult to get commercially acceptable individual concentrates by conventional selective flotation using inorganic collector reagents. Microbially-induced mineral beneficiation has proved to be more effective, economically viable and an environmentally benign process for the effective separation of various minerals. Applications of microbially-induced mineral beneficiation are demonstrated in this paper with respect to beneficiation of complex multimetal sulfides. The role of adapted microorganisms and bioreagents in the beneficiation of complex sulphide minerals are also illustrated.

"Nkomati Nickel Mine in South Africa processes one of the world’s hardest ores in a 375k TPM autogenous grinding circuit. The plant employs an unconventional processing circuit, comprising a primary autogenous mill (AG or FAG) and pebble crushing circuit followed by a secondary hybrid pebble/ball mill and classification cyclone cluster.Advanced Process Control (APC) or Expert Control is now generally accepted as an advantage in most modern high capacity concentrator grinding circuits. This paper reviews the installation of model predictive control at Nkomati and examines the results and benefits of installation in an autogenous mill during plant ramp-up. The paper also demonstrates how predefining process control objectives together with good plant and supplier cooperation can achieve a robust and reliable APC implementation on a very short site program.The results conclusively demonstrate operational and economic benefits during circuit operation with the advanced process control system ON. Production performance and circuit stability were significantly better than during manual control."

"The use of Caro's acid as a replacement for hydrogen peroxide for the oxidation of vanadium prior to solvent extraction resulted in a 56% reduction in oxidant usage when compared on an equivalent hydrogen peroxide basis. Comparative oxidation tests, using two actual uranium mill raffinates, resulted in premature precipitation of an amorphous ferric vanadate when hydrogen peroxide was used to oxidize one of the raffinates containing a high iron to vanadium ratio. The use of Caro's acid eliminated the precipitation problem, thereby permitting the adjustment of the raffinate pH to a higher, more favourable level prior to solvent extraction.Potentiometric characterization of the raffinates revealed that vanadium is responsible for the inefficiency of hydrogen peroxide compared with Caro's acid, with the oxidation efficiency of iron being the same for both oxidants. A limiting potential between 720 and 740 mV was observed when using hydrogen peroxide, while, when using Care's acid, potentials approaching 1200 mV were achievable.A four-stage, countercurrent extraction performed on the oxidized raffinates did not reveal any operational problems. The extraction efficiency and the extraction coefficient were found to be higher when Caro's acid was used as the oxidant, as opposed to hydrogen peroxide.IntroductionMost vanadium is recovered as a by-product of some other process: leaching of Carnotite uranium ores, oil fly ash, phosphate rock or chromite processing. The major source of vanadium has been from uranium mills incorporating acid leaching of Carnotite ore s at elevated temperatures and pressures. The by-product recovery of vanadium from uranium ores of the Uravan Mineral Belt, located in the Colorado Plateau , is a common occurrence when vanadium recovery is economically viable."

The future is here ? or at least that?s what Mine Planners predicted some 15 years ago ? that by 2004 we would have man-less mines running themselves using space-aged technology. Truthfully, though, there hasn?t been much change in mining methods in the past decade, but thankfully that?s all about to change. The benefits of autonomous ? even Tele-operated mining (especially in narrow-vein ore bodies) are wellknown: increased production hours by eliminating travel time to and from the face, continuous production at the face while crews screen and bolt behind the working equipment, less liability for workers? safety in certain areas, etc. But when plans are put in place to accomplish this vision, things stagnate and production carries on as before. This paper examines the components necessary to make that vision a reality. First we?ll detail the technology required to enable Tele-operation ? even autonomous operation of mining machinery, then we?ll look at what?s wrong with the current way we?re mining, and finally conclude with a critique of the machinery itself.

Papua New Guinea is a country on the cusp of development, struggling to find a balance between the demands of national and regional growth, landowner expectations and the maintenance of cultural identity. Ok Tedi Mining Limited is the single largest contributor to PNG?s economy, representing about 10 percent of the country?s GDP. OTML is demonstrating that business and country risk can be managed through effective, respectful partnerships with local communities. OTML?s relationships with the communities of PNG?s Western Province are multifaceted. Communities have borne the brunt of the mine?s environmental impact, yet have benefited enormously from the development that the mine has brought. Importantly, the PNG economy is now the ultimate beneficiary of more than four-fifths of the dividends from the mine, the majority of which are held in trust for long-term sustainable development projects. The paper describes how OTML works with the Western Province communities to create a secure operating environment that recognizes the people?s aspirations for development and self-determination.

The San Anconio mine, owned by San Antonio Gold Mines, Limited, is located on the north shore of Rice lake, thirty miles east of lake Winnipeg, and about one hundred miles northeast of the city of Winnipeg. The three claims which formed the original San Antonio group were staked in 1911. Subsequent additions to the Company's property have in-creased their holdings co thirteen claims. Preliminary development of the property took place between 1925 and 1930. The major ore discovery during this period was the 16 vein. The mine was closed in September, 1930, but re-opened in April, 1932, since which rime it has been in continuous operation. In 1933, a development of special importance was that of the 26 vein. The mill capacity, originally designed for 150 tons, was increased to-wards the end of 1933 to 170 tons. With highly satisfactory mine development, mill enlargement to approximately 300 tons was made possible. The Company has financed the additions and improvements from mine production. Iris of interest to note that San Antonio is the first gold mine in Manitoba to pay a dividend. The first dividend was paid to the shareholders in March, 1934, and the fourth was recently declared. Electric power is transmitted to the property from the Great Falls plant of the Manitoba Power Company over a 66,000-volt transmission line approximately 62 miles long. The old camps, which had been in use since work on the property was started, in 1927, were demolished in the spring of 1934, and new camps were built on the Ross dam. Lumber for these buildings was out at the Company's saw-mill on Gold creek, eight miles from the mine. Two bunk-houses with a capacity of 72 men each were constructed, also a dining room co accommodate 144 men, a store, staff house, hospital, burcher shop, and warehouse. The camp buildings are all steam-heated from an electric boiler. They are all insulated on walls, roofs, and floors with a heavy building board, and are covered on the outside walls with asbestos siding, and on the roofs with corrugated iron. A community of about 800 persons has grown up around the mine, at Bissert. "Final Galloway (stage) designs for vertical drill and blast shaft sinking projects evolve from complex thought patterns which integrate operational processes, systems and methods of communication, power supply, drilling, blasting, ventilating, mucking, supporting, surveying, dewatering, sealing, concrete lining and shaft furnishing. Attention to ergonomic design detail at the shaftsman / structure interface is at the heart of safe and successful multi-deck working platforms. For economy the end product must have a low mass to reduce suspension rope end loads to be able to use smaller suspension hoists and have lighter headframe structures, be robust to withstand concussion damage, be easily constructible on site, be maintainable in the shaft barrel, and comply with safety and legislated standards. This paper’s ambition is to describe a systematic design framework and sequenced thought process that delivers a product that is engineered with excellence, illustrated by making use of two designs that evolved during recent Galloway projects, one destined for a large diameter man/material shaft, the other for a ventilation shaft. The stage engineering iterative process starts with mapping permanent and sinking hoisting layouts, followed by laying out horizontal deck plans, mostly constrained by the permanent shaft purpose and configuration, whilst maximizing openings to enable muck to be removed rapidly for the best sinking cycles. Concurrently the designer needs to understand the chosen sinking methodologies in conjunction with crewing to determine the number of decks and fix their spacing. Insufficient access to move and line up formwork, set reinforcing rods and pour concrete in the confined spaces of the stage is an inherent major risk to be mitigated. An iterative and integrative process follows for the primary configuration which delves into increasing design detail, accommodating all other methodology influences, resulting in 3D layouts for further risk assessment, review and fine tuning by seasoned shaftsmen. INTRODUCTION Documented colliery shaft sinking practice from the late 1800’s makes reference to purpose built walling (bricked lining) cribs with floors suspended in sinking shafts, thereby allowing shaft lining to proceed concurrently with the excavation. Improvements were made by Sir William Galloway who introduced two decks supported at the corners by angle irons. The sinking stage, or Galloway, has developed substantially over time to be the in-barrel heart of the sinking operation, with overwhelming complexity for those who have to design one for the first time."
