"Blast fumes are one of the major sources for NOx in underground mines. In 2016, the Occupational Exposure Limits for NOx in Germany were reduced by 90%. The task is to keep re-entry times after blasting at the present level and thereby ensure an economic operation of the mine. Measurements show that using ventilation solely is not sufficient. A new approach to reduce NOx from blast fumes is described. Laboratory experiments were performed and a reduction of NOx was observed. Measurements were conducted at an explosive factory’s testing facility and in an underground mine at blasting operations. INTRODUCTION Whether for production of ore or for drift development, the processes in an underground mine are always the same: 1) fracturing the rock, 2) loading the pile, 3) support the resulting cavity. The fracturing of the rock can be done mechanically, by cutting, for example by using continuous miners or tunnel boring machines, or by drilling and blasting. Drilling and blasting is more flexible than mechanical driving, as it can be used independently of the rock strength. Furthermore, this driving method allows a more flexible reaction to changes in geological and/or operational conditions. Thus, underground mining and blasting are almost inextricably linked with each other, and regardless of the size and level of technology of the mine, blasting is hardly avoidable. Depending on the mining method chosen and the existing framework conditions, such as the mechanical properties of the rock or the availability of machinery, blasting is an integral part of daily operations. Even in mines where blasting is not part of regular operations, it cannot be completely avoided. The blast fumes generated by the explosions are, in addition to diesel engine emissions, one of the two main sources of emissions of nitrous gases underground. Up to now, state of the art for dealing with blast fumes is ventilation. The fumes are diluted with fresh air and ventilated out of the mine. This treatment of blast fumes is more than sufficient with the former German Occupational Exposure Limits (OEL). The adaption of the OEL in Germany to the recommendations of the Committee on Occupational Exposure Limits (SCOEL), a committee of the European Commission, leads to big challenges for the mining industry in reducing the concentrations of these gases at the workplaces underground. On its meeting on May 2nd and 3rd 2016, the Committee on Hazardous Substances (Ausschuss für Gefahrstoffe, AGS), an advisory body of the German Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS), advised the BMAS to copy the OEL, as recommended by the SCOEL, to the Technical Rules for Hazardous Substances (TRGS 900). BMAS followed this advice, consequently the new OEL where published on November 4th 2016 and became part of the TRGS 900. Table 1 shows the former and new OEL for Germany. These new OEL became law after publishing, but two exceptions were made: For tunneling operations, they became law on October 31st 2017, for mining operations they will become law on October 31st 2021 (BAuA, 2004, 2016, 2017)."

"Robex Resources interrupted production at the Nampala Mine in September 2014 following throughput and gold recovery results which were below expectations during the first months of operation. After a thorough plant audit, an important brainstorming took place in order to identify an economical path to resume production. It was clearly identified that a significant investment was necessary at the concentrator prior to restarting the plant, namely the addition of a ball mill and a new elution system.The mineral processing simulation software USIM PAC was used in order to simulate the grinding circuit in design. The simulations’ outputs allowed the ball mill characteristics and the surrounding classification devices to be designed with more accuracy. Many ball mills available from second hand retailers were therefore studied in the simulated circuit. The chosen ball mill, which was in perfect condition, had the advantage of being available for rapid delivery on site.The paper first describes the ball mill sizing method in comparison with the conventional Allis Chalmers method. It then describes the phase 2 concentrator start-up (that took place in 2016) with the commissioning of the ball mill, the classification circuit, the gravity concentration, the four (4) new carbon-in-leach (CIL) tanks, and the Zadra elution system (The phase 1 start-up took place in 2014). It finally provides production data compared to expected simulation data, as commercial production was reached in January 2017.IntroductionDesigning a new concentrator or new equipment within an existing concentrator requires significant efforts to identify possible bottlenecks and their causes (i.e. limiting equipment or sectors) and accurate sizing of major equipment can have a tremendous impact on the economy of the whole project. In the presented case study, the ball mill was the critical equipment and oversizing it could have brought the Capex to a level where the project would not have gone through. Inversely, undersizing the mill could have resulted in lower production and therefore no economic viability for the project once it is in operation.During engineering studies, equipment sizing often relies on a static mass balance and one-by-one sizing of all pieces of equipment. The sizing is then left to the equipment manufacturer or in the case of mills, evaluated with empirical models mostly relying on the Bond equations (Allis Chalmers method) [Rowland and Kjos, 1978]. This methodology shows the disadvantage of not considering interaction between equipment in a mineral processing circuit, especially when recirculation occurs. Also, it has the disadvantage of not using the more advanced grinding models that include the use of the whole particle size distribution as well as phenomenological components by only using limited parameters in the ore particle size distribution (i.e. the P80). This can be explained by the lack of data that sometimes needs to be gathered in order to tune the more advanced models but also by the conservative mindset in mineral concentration engineering which does not always favor the use of process simulation. In many aspects of process engineering, Soutex has demonstrated its affinity to using simulation in order to size equipment with more accuracy, consider process variability, simulate complex systems, and study supply chain management (Berton et al., 2015)."

A GPS-based traffic awareness and collision avoidance system has been implemented at mines with long, narrow access roads to help avoid accidents involving two approaching vehicles or vehicles following too close. A simple display in the cab of each outfitted vehicle gives an indication of oncoming traffic and a voice announcement indicates the type of vehicle that is coming as far out as 300 meters. Advanced warning of approaching vehicles is increasing driver awareness, especially around blind corners and in adverse weather such as heavy fog, snow, or rain. Speeding alarms have also been implemented and are especially critical as a vehicle approaches reduced speed areas near single-lane bridges or tight curves. A description of the system, safety improvements seen since its introduction, and implementation challenges will be discussed.

Viburnum, located in the foothills of the Ozarks in south-east Missouri, is the site of a modern lead mining and milling operation. Two mines are currently producing a total of 5,000 tons per day and a third mine is in the final development stage, with full production scheduled for late this year (1964). These mines will supply the tonnage required to keep the Viburnum mill operating at a full capacity of 7,000 tons per day for many years. The efficient underground mining operation is completely trackless. Drill jumbos are used to break the ore in a room and pillar method of mining. Transloaders, or St. Joe shovels, and trucks do the loading and hauling. The Viburnum mill has a world-wide reputation as a most efficient operation. This is due to the extensive use of automatic process controls, and labour saving materials handling facilities. "A world class rare metals ore deposit in Africa belongs to a massive granite type poly-metallic pyrochlore-niobium resource. Successful project development in realizing the resource is vital to Africa’s economy and pyrochlore processing technology.The ore properties are quite complex due to the presence of varieties of valuable minerals, fine dissemination and intimate association of minerals and the relative abundance of easy-floatable minerals. The separation of pyrochlore from zircon, calcite and mica is generally considered difficult. Whilst studies have previously been conducted by several independent institutions overseas, no satisfactory process has yet been developed to date for the ore deposit—possibly due to the process designed being too complex; high cost of regents; lower performance.Based on process mineralogy study and extensive testwork, the authors have in recent years developed a new technology—“De-slime—Iron-rejection—Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation—Pyrochlore flotation”. The flow-sheet is characterized by ?1prior removal of slimes and iron minerals; ?2 Zircon (with calcite) and Calcite reverse flotation; and ?3Pyrochlore flotation applying new type of chelating collector GYX3 developed by GZRINM in conjunction with selected regulators and depressants.The process involved in the new technology is simple to implement and facilitates stable operation; the flotation reagent regime is easily adaptable; the cost of main reagent is lower largely because it is easy to manufacture and is environmental friendly. Laboratory test results demonstrated that, for raw ore assaying 0.35% Nb2O5, 0.03% Ta2O5 and 0.45% ZrO2, pyrochlore concentrate grade of >35% Nb2O5 could be obtained with >74% recovery. Meanwhile, the Ta2O5 content in pyrochlore concentrate could be recycled, and ZrO2 recovery >50% could be achieved in zircon concentrate assaying ZrO2>63%—significantly improving the technical-economic indicator. These results were verified in pilot trials of 1.44t/d throughput. The paper presents the new technology in whole, summarizes the key factors affecting its performance and discusses in simple terms the mechanism of separation."

"The wear performance of grinding balls under conditions of impact and abrasion is affected by their chemical composition and structure. The selection of appropriate analyses and heat treatments that will provide both abrasion and impact resistance takes into account the effects of certain elements on structure and harden-ability, as well as the over-all effect of composition and hardness penetration on the residual stress pattern developed through heat treatment. Direct quenching from forging temperatures substantially increases hardenability over that obtained in reheat-quench practices, and can be done without undue risk of damage to the ball provided that the harden-ability bears the correct relationship to ball diameter.Average volumetric hardness and percent hardened volume are convenient parameters for quantitatively expressing the response to heat treatment and indicating anticipated wear properties. A number of factors which can lead to reduced wear life as a result of material or processing problems are reviewed and illustrated."

"There has been a continuous evolution with the use of pre-cast concrete elements in the construction of aluminum smelters. In 1990, Phase I of Alouette was built using cast-in-place concrete exclusively. Whereas, other AP 30 technology plants such as Hillside 2 in the mid-1990s used pre-cast concrete beams with cast-in-place floors. Mozal 2, in 2002, used pre-cast concrete beams with pre-cast partial-slab operating floors. Alouette Phase II went further. Not only were the potroom building beams and floors pre-cast, but the entire pot support system, insulating walls and basement jersey walls were pre-cast. Once the techniques for bending and welding the reinforcement bars and the design for attaching electrical insulating plates to the concrete was perfected, the challenge for the project remained only in the logistics of transporting the pieces to site and simple erection. The overall impact on the project was dramatic. Using prefabricated concrete not only allowed advancement of the schedule, but totally eliminated formwork, re-bar installation, and form removal activities along with the handling of all the materials involved with these activities. With the elimination of these labour and material-intensive portions of the job, exposure to work injuries was dramatically reduced. The most prevalent activity for lost time accidents is during the rough work associated with concrete formwork, placing concrete and form removal. Another area where prefabricated elements were successfully used on Alouette Phase II was for the insulating walls enclosing the pot area, known as the ""claustra walls"". Usually these walls are constructed in-situ using mortar and breeze block. Success was also achieved with prefabrication of the perimetric walls that are installed at the lower floor of the potroom. A big advantage of using prefabricated concrete in the electrolysis area is in assuring electrical isolation for the operating floors. The 2-mm butt joints of ZE41A-T5 sand castings were laser welded using 1.6 mm EZ33A-T5 filler wire and a continuous wave Nd:YAG system at a power of 4 kW, surface defocusing and various welding speeds, Compared with the base metal, the fusion zone showed significant grain refinement due to high cooling rate, No grain coarsening was observed in the heat affected zone (HAZ). The porosity area percentage and total solidification crack length in the fusion zone (FZ) were reduced as the welding speed increased from 4 to 7 m/min, Fusion zone area, total penetration depth, and weld width decreased with increased welding speed, The hardness in the FZ was similar to or higher than the base metal after a natural aging of about one year, but there was a drop in the hardness of the HAZ, The HAZ width decreased with increasing the welding speed, Tensile test showed that a joint efficiency of approximately 75 ? 90 % was obtained.

"In June, 2018 Lalor Mine experienced a catastrophic blade failure of its No. 2 main exhaust fan. Over the following weeks several key changes were made to the auxiliary ventilation system to allow for continued production while the exhaust fans were repaired. Issues encountered during the period of reduced ventilation, and how they were addressed, are analyzed. The suspected causes of the exhaust fan blade failure and how risk was mitigated during the reconstruction are discussed. Key findings and lessons learned are summarized.INTRODUCTIONLalor Mine, owned and operated by Hudbay is an underground zinc, gold, and copper mine located in northern Manitoba. The mine workings extend to a depth of 1090 metres below surface and is ventilated using a push-pull system. The mine exhausts through the main exhaust raise; equipped with two, 2,500 HP fans and upcasts through a portal located at the neighboring mine, Chisel North. Air is supplied to Lalor Mine through four intake fans: The Production Shaft Downcast (two, 250 HP), Lalor Downcast (one, 400 HP), and Chisel Downcast (one, 600 HP) fans (Figure 1). In June 2018, Lalor was scheduled to produce approximately 4,000 tpd.On June 20, 2018 at 2:52 pm Lalor Mine experienced a fault on the Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) for Exhaust Fan No. 1. Time would be needed to complete the necessary repairs. The No. 2 exhaust fan was ramped up from 525 rpm to 800 rpm, 90% of its capacity, in order to maintain underground ventilation. At 4:46 pm, approximately two hours after the rpm was increased, exhaust fan No. 2 experienced a catastrophic blade failure. The forces from the blade failure resulted in the top half of the fan housing being thrown 50 metres from where it was installed; with several large sections of fan blade being thrown further (Figure 2)."

"IntroductionSULPHUR is a constituent of many industrial products. It is part •of almost anything we eat, wear, or use. In fact, sulphur is so important that there has been an increasing tendency in recent years to measure industrial growth in terms of sulphur consumption.The uncertainty of obtaining adequate supplies •of elemental sulphur from the Frasch-mined domes. of Texas and Louisiana in the United States led all countries in 1950 to seek alternative sources of supply of this necessary element.Canadian industry has been supplied, for many years, with most of its sulphur requirements by United States Frasch-mined sulphur. World demand for this sulphur has necessitated the imposition of controls on its distribution, as production has not kept pace with demand. Until the third quarter of 1950, Canadian manufacturers of pulp and paper, heavy chemicals, explosives, and textiles •experienced little difficulty in obtaining their needs of elemental sulphur from the United States. However, at that time, low producers' stocks and declining reserves threatened to reduce shipments from producers, with the prospect of a continuing shortage for some time. These conditions, together with higher prices, stimulated the search for alternative sources of supply in Canada."

Batch flotation tests were carried out using samples from stockpiles that were up to 1.5 months old as well as fresh samples oxidized in the lab for up to six months. Head grades and size distributions of samples were equalized whenever possible. The samples from stockpiles and oxidation experiments produced inferior nickel grade-recovery compared to the fresh sample. The poorer grade-recovery performance was attributable to two factors. First, a significant dilution effect was observed due to complete flotation of pyrrhotite. Secondly, the same stockpiling conditions caused nickel losses that were attributable to non-floatability of some pentlandite. Application of a high pH of 10 compared to the regular pH of 9.2 slowed down pyrrhotite flotation kinetics, but was not able to prevent complete flotation after 8 minutes. The samples oxidized in the lab did not match full characteristics of stockpile samples. They provided somewhat better selectivity for pentlandite. Some correlations were observed on a qualitative basis between surface characteristics such as elemental sulphur formation, activation and flotation behaviour. Oxidation conditions, which induce floatability on pyrrhotite while causing incremental loss in pentlandite floatability appear to be the root cause of difficulties in the processing of oxidized forms of these ores.

The optimal selection of machine or machine group for building processes is very important role of building planner during the process of building planning. During this process building planner have to analyze several factors influencing the final effective decision concerning this problem. There are several factors and criteria for effective selection of building machines. In our contribution there are analyzed: ability of machines to realize designed building process (quality aspect), duration of mechanized process (time aspect) and minimizing of energy consumption (cost and environmental aspect). Selected scientific methods and theories of problem solution can be divided into these groups: theory of system (creation of building machine selection method), multi-criteria optimizing method (analysis of mechanized building process from the point of more optimal criteria), queuing theory (application during the mathematical modeling of mechanized soil processes), method of scientific analysis (analysis of factors influencing final decisions), method of scientific synthesis (creation of optimizing method implemented into building processes and possible application in construction sector). Multi-criteria optimizing method were during our research work implemented into soil processes and selected building group machines (excavators and trucks), which are very often used in construction and mining processes. This method can be considered as a multi-level decision making process based on multiple parameters. In our contribution is presented key mathematical models for model example solution and software built in Java, which has been created as a support for method described in this contribution. Application of this method and software will increase the effectiveness of building machine selection from the point of key criteria of optimizing: quality, time and energy consumption.

The mining industry consumes huge water volumes and the waste streams typically contain sulfate, which has caused problems to many operations around the world. Discharge of sulfate to fresh waters is being restricted as the sulfate load increases salinity and causes problems when sulfate is reduced to toxic H2S by natural bacteria. To reduce fresh water consumption, internal water recycling had become a necessity in metallurgical processes. However, the recycling causes accumulation of sulfate and other components in water, causing problems to process performance and increases scaling in piping and equipment. Few technically feasible water treatment processes exist in the market that can be applied to decrease sulfate concentration below gypsum saturation level: biological sulfate reduction, membrane separation, ion exchange, evaporation and chemical precipitation. Some of these technologies are effective for treating wastewater, but there is typically a highly concentrated sulfate fraction left requiring still further treatment. Outotec has developed a sulfate removal solution, Outotec Ettringite process, which allows flexible control of residual sulfate concentration, thereby opening doors for increased water recycle within processes and control of the sulfate in discharged waters. In this article the results and benefits of this novel process along with examples of operating costs are presented.

Hauling trucks are important part of equipment fleets for large earthmoving operations such as those encountered in dams and highway construction projects. This paper presents an automated methodology for tracking and estimating productivity of hauling trucks fleet operations in near-real-time. Recent advancement in automated site data acquisition technologies made their use in tracking and monitoring of construction operations feasible. However, these technologies fail to track hauling truck fleets due to the change in the cut and fill locations from one cycle to another; making tracking and progress reporting difficult and inaccurate. In addition, there is very little work done utilizing data sensed directly from equipment, for example sensing when truck dumping bed is raised during the dumping process. The technologies deployed in the developed method are Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and equipment control sensors. Low cost passive RFID tags are attached to hauling trucks and fixed RFID readers are attached to loaders or excavators. The read range of the used RFID tag is centimeters, to be activated only when a loader with an attached RFID reader is loading a truck. On the other hand, control sensor is connected to the truck control system and operated by the motion of its movable bed. The function of control sensors is to record the signal time when the truck operator gives order to the truck control system to raise or lower truck bed. The captured data is then transferred wirelessly from the RFID reader and control sensor to a computer housed in one of the temporary offices onsite and subsequently to the main server in the contractor?s head office. Fusing the data captured from RFID reader and control sensor is used to identify loading, travel, dumping and return time that constitute the hauling truck cycle time. The collected data is analyzed and processed automatically, without human intervention, to calculate the productivity of the hauling truck and to report it directly to onsite personnel. Relational database is developed to support the implementation of the proposed method. The developed database is used to process the data captured by the RFID and the control sensor to calculate the productivity achieved in cutfill operations in near-real-time. The developed methodology is expected to facilitate early detection of discrepancies between actual and planned performances.

"Line Creek Resources Ltd. produces three million clean tonnes per year of metallurgical and thermal coals for the international market. The mining operation, which is located in the mountains of southeastern British Columbia, produces coal from four pits by conventional truck and shovel methods.The South Pit, which has been in operation since J982, has a benched highwall 490 m in height. Shallow dipping coal seams at the base of the syncline formation will be exposed in the highwall over the next four years of pit life. The first of these seams, which will measure 500 m in final highwall length, was exposed in J994. An auger, powered by a 1250 hp engine capable of cutting 2.2 m diameter holes, was brought on site in J994 and has proven to be a successful means of recovering coal from the J3 m thick seam.This paper covers the background to the selection of an auger mining method to recover highwall reserves together with the geotechnical and methane considerations for this approach.IntroductionLine Creek Resources Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Manalta Coal Ltd., owns and operates the Line Creek mine. The operation which consists of four active pits, a processing plant, and rail loadout is located in the southeastern coal fields of British Columbia. Figure 1 shows the general area.The coal bearing sequence at the mine is preserved on the east and west limbs of a major syncline. Up to twelve mineable coal seams, ranging in thickness from 2 m to 15 m are contained in the formation. Within the pits the seams are stratigraphically consistent and structurally undisturbed, except for small-scale thrust faults that create multiple repeats of the seams."

"About 1905, a plant was constructed at C1ayburn, in the Lower Fraser valley, 4'5 miles east of Vancouver, to process shales from Sumas mountain into heavy clay products. In time, mining operations were found to be more favourable on the opposite side of the mountain, and by 1913 a plant, which soon became the centre of activities, was completed at Kilgard. Destroyed by fire in 1949, the plant was rebuilt on modern lines, and a second plant was established at Abbotsford, six miles to the west. The Company, from its beginning, has grown with development of the Province. In recent years, operations have kept abreast of latest developments, particularly in materials handling. Latest innovation has been the complete conversion of fuel from Bunker C oil to natural gas. In 1957 the Company became associated with Harbison Walker Refractories, Limited, a leader in its field in the United States, and its title was changed from Clayburn Company, Limited, to Clayburn-Harbison, Limited. Currently, the Kilgard plant produces sewer pipe, agricultural tile, and flue liner; the Abbotsford plant, refractories and facebrick. Improvement of products and development of new ones are tasks of a recently-completed testing and research laboratory.Almost all ware produced is marketed in Western Canada or Washing-ton State. The Vancouver area absorbs the bulk of structural clay products."

"Investors in flow-through shares are going to need an expanded road map to find their way through a growing maze of tax rules affecting such shares. At the end of 1985, no fewer than three new sets of important tax amendments were tabled which could have a significant effect on flow-through share issues. This proposed legislation is discussed this month in Tax Notes.IntroductionIn a flurry of legislative activity at the end of 1985, the federal government tabled legislation which includes the introduction of new rules which will have a notable effect on investors in flow-through shares and on companies that issue such shares.First, on November 26, 1985, Bill C-84, the legislation to implement most of the changes announced in the May budget, was introduced in Parliament. This legislation includes the rules for the $500,000 capital gains exemption, a matter of considerable interest to flow through share investors.Next, on December 2, 1985, the government tabled a Notice of Ways and Means Motion which would extend the time horizon for spending flow-through share funds to include the 60-day period following the calendar year. But all news was not good news. On December 4 the government released its proposals for a minimum personal income tax, which would include rules that would catch an investor's CEE expenses and capital gains."
