Experiments investigating the treatment of a ground wood white water waste from an Ontario pulp and paper mill by an HVCB coal are reported. Adsorption capacity for the waste, with a soluble COD contribution of 2,100 mg/I, amounted to 0.17 per cent, by weight, of the Nova Scotia coal used. Percolation of the white water waste through a coal bed indicated that soluble COD is removed. For finely ground coals, over 90 per cent of the suspended solids in the waste are retained on the coal. Plugging of the coal bed is rapid, so that any treating process using filtration would have to renew the surface of the bed frequently.

The availability of mineral aggregates for construction purposes is rapidly declining through inadequate resource planning. restrictive zoning and legislation , and competing land uses. The Geological Branch of the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources has undertaken to provide aggregate inventory reports for all townships designated under The Pits and Quarries Control Act, 1971, and eventually for all towns hips in heavily populated areas. The reports contain maps and recommendations for extractive zoning by municipalities; of necessity only the largest deposits are given priority recommendations. It is intended that these reports should improve the resource planning in areas underlain by large aggregate deposits. The inventory is only possible because a concentrated effort has been made to map the Quaternary geology of populated areas over the last ten years. Future needs require that we develop methods to determine the extent of poorly defined and buried aggregates and that we look for natural alternatives.

The nickel-cobalt sulphides produced from limonitic laterite ores by Moa Nickel S.A. in Cuba are refined at the Corefco nickel-cobalt refinery in Canada. Major changes to the refining process were required when the Moa sulphide feed, with its unusually high cobalt content, was introduced in the early 1990's. In the period 1994 to 2005 the production capacity of the refinery has increased dramatically to match increases at Moa, and significant process improvements incorporated. The process flowsheet consists of the original ammonia leach process, optimized for cobalt chemistry and overall leaching capacity. Extraction of metal values is followed by the unique nickel-cobalt separation technology, in which most of the cobalt is separated from the ammoniacal nickel sulphate leach solution by precipitation as a nickel-cobalt hexammine salt. This salt is refined from a Co:Ni ratio of 1:1 to over 10,000:1 by selectively leaching nickel, redissolution and recrystallization in ammonium sulphate solution. Nickel and cobalt are recovered using the well-known Sherritt hydrogen reduction technology. This paper reviews the chemistry described above, examines some of the changes in operating conditions made over the years and highlights some of the recent physical changes made to the refinery.

"Traditional geostatistical modelling methods are difficult to apply to heavy-tailed deposits because the extreme positive skew of the grade distribution leads to bias. The focus here is on an innovative method of modelling the high-grade population by conditionally simulating discrete volumes (nuggets) of gold with marked Poisson and Cox processes. Capping and other ad-hoc manipulation of the assay data is not required; however, an intensity map for the point processes is required. The method is demonstrated on a dataset from an epithermal deposit and demonstrates an improvement in reducing smearing and controlling the skew of the grade distribution.RÉSUMÉ Les méthodes traditionnelles de modélisation géostatistique sont difficiles à appliquer dans des gisements dont la distribution de la teneur est à queue lourde car l’extrême asymétrie positive de la distribution de la teneur génère des biais. Dans le présent article, l’accent est mis sur une méthode novatrice de modélisation de la population à haute teneur par la simulation conditionnelle des volumes discrets d’or (pépites) au moyen de procédés marqués de Poisson et de Cox. La limite d’utilisation et d’autres manipulations ad hoc des données ne sont pas requises; toutefois, il faut une carte des intensités pour le processus ponctuel. Despite the phase-out of earned depletion allowances for most oil and gas operations as part of the federal government's new National Energy Program, earned depletion provisions are still alive and well for the mining sector, although they might well be slowly strangling to death in their own entanglement of complexity!"

"Collecting property of two hydroxamic acid collectors have different type of nonpolar structure to hemimorphite has been comparatively studied via monomineral flotation test, and the reason causes different collecting performance has been discussed from the view of relationship between molecular structure and collecting property. The flotation tests results show that C5-9 hydroxamic acid has an unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group shows better collecting property to hemimorphite than cyclohexyl hydroxamic acid which has a naphthenic nonpolar group. FTIR detecting results show that the adsorption type of collector adsorbed on hemimorphite surface is chemical adsorption. Calculation results of polar group’s geometric structure parameters, polar group’s electron density distribution, octanol-water partition coefficient (logP) and molecular frontier orbital energy show that the key factor caused different collecting property of two collectors to hemimorphite is the logP; unbranched linear alkyl nonpolar group is more conducive than naphthenic nonpolar group to make hemimorphite particle more hydrophobic.INTRODUCTIONZinc-bearing mineral recovered from lead-zinc ores is the main source that people can obtain zinc resource from nature. However, natural sulfide ores are currently getting depleted steadily for the primary zinc source. In order to satisfy the future demand of zinc resource, there is an obvious recognition that the recovery of zinc oxidized minerals from the ores is a crucial alternative (Hosseini & Forssberg, 2007; Navidi Kashani & Rashchi, 2008).But the fact that can’t be ignored is the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is much more difficult than that of zinc sulfide minerals, which is mainly due to the flotation characteristics of these zinc oxidized minerals such as lower selectivity and higher reagent consumption, as well as complex and variety of lead-zinc ores. Presently, there have been many various beneficiation technologies used for recovering zinc oxidized minerals and dealing with ores for recovering metallic zinc such as flotation and hydrometallurgy (Abkhoshk, Jorjani, Al-Harahsheh, Rashchi, & Naazeri, 2014; Önal et al., 2005). But from an overall perspective, flotation is the most common method used for the beneficiation of zinc oxidized minerals, and there have been extensive investigations conducted on the flotation of zinc oxide ores (Ejtemaei, Gharabaghi, & Irannajad, 2014). Until now, the most well-known method used commercially for the flotation of zinc oxidized minerals is sulfidization with sodium sulfide and flotation with a cationic collector of amines containing from 8 to 18 carbon atoms. However, a major problem for this method is the large amount of fines and slime results in the increase of reagent consumption and promotes the phenomenon of slime-coating. For preclude this negative effect, the de-sliming and processing optimization is indispensible (Peres, Borges, & Galery, 1994; Salum, de Araujo, & Peres, 1992)."

Introduction The circumstances under which the gold mining industry was forced to curtail operations a few years ago are well known to all. The effect of those circumstances is particularly noticeable when one enters some of the larger mills that were designed, in better times, to treat relatively large tonnages. On their grinding floors one will observe that a number of grinding units are lying idle, and the ravages of rust are everywhere in evidence. The same applies to other equipment throughout these mills. In 1941, we found it necessary to reduce tonnage considerably in the Wright-Hargreaves mill. With the assumption that a lower tonnage would be of long duration, we began to focus our attention on some of the idle equipment with a view to re-arrangement of the flow-sheet for greater economy of operation. In an article by the writer published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (March, April, and May issues, 1939) , it was pointed out that in designing this mill there was a very limited floor space available. The choice of thickening equipment was imposed solely by the necessity for space: conservation. Thickening by gravity would have required 5,000 square feet of floor space, whereas Genter thickeners required only 1,200 square feet. As a consequence, the Genters were chosen. The decision to add flotation to the circuit was made primarily to save space. On a cost-plus-tail basis, 80 to 100 hours agitation on all pulp would produce similar overall results, but would require much more space.

The role of solutionizing conditions within the T6 heat treatment of the cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloy with micro-additions of Zr-Ti-V was assessed in terms of their influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. As a solution treatment, a single step process at 485 and 510oC and a two-step process at 510 and 525oC for varying time intervals from 0.5 to 9 h, were examined. In all cases, solution treatment was followed by isothermal aging at 150oC for 100 h. The microstructural analysis showed that the solution treatment changed the eutectic silicon morphology from needle-like, present after casting, to spherical shape in the T6 state and that the extent of changes was strongly influenced by temperature and time. The Cu- and Mg-rich phases completely dissolved during solution treatment while the Fe-containing phase, Al8Si6Mg3Fe, remained partially in the microstructure. The Ti, V and Zr containing phases, Al13Si2Ti3Zr and Al3Si26FeTiV10, present in as-cast state, were partially dissolved during solution treatment, reducing their size by 10 - 48%. The studied alloy reached the maximum ultimate tensile strength of 335 MPa and yield stress of 303 MPa for two-step solutionizing with a total time of 4.5 h. It is concluded that the two-step solution treatment resulted in higher tensile properties than the single-step process.

Demand for metals will continue to grow as global population numbers and prosperity levels steadily increase. Consequently, there will continue to be a need to design and construct new metallurgical plants. Business success in general requires projects to be financially successful and return appropriate value to their owners. However, in the metals industry, private and public sector financing sources have become very sensitive to the perceived inability of projects to contain costs and meet other business objectives. Thus, the capital for projects has become more difficult and expensive to obtain. It is instructive to note that Ernst and Young (2011) identified that: “Delivery of predictable project results bestows competitive advantage and market confidence to those corporations who successfully instill this discipline”. The implication for future projects is that they must be systematically developed to minimize perceived risks—and more importantly—to demonstrate that the risks are managed to achieve the business case. Then, provided that the project has been developed in a well-structured way, project success can again be defined as a project with: a final cost within 10% of the budget approved at the end of FEL3, when the project is properly defined and the permit conditions are agreed upon; a start-up date within three months of the definitive, scheduled startup date; production levels at 85% of design capacity within a year of starting commercial operation; production meeting the target environmental restrictions; and with zero lost time accidents during construction and startup. The plant design is one of many integrated activities required to achieve these objectives. This book represents a valuable link between the existing engineering literature that encompasses a wide range of engineering fundamental textbooks and design manuals and the project management literature such as the Project Management Body of Knowledge, or PMBOK® (Project Management Institute, 2014). It is evident throughout this book, that the design team is a small but essential part of a much larger project team comprising the project management, construction management, and construction contractor staff. The grade of mineral resource estimates underpin all major economic considerations of mining prospects. While there are reporting requirements to satisfy when stating a mineral resource estimate, an examination of NI 43-101 style reports suggests that authors believe that there are a number of ways of addressing these requirements. As a reader of these reports, some processes are helpful and others are not so in getting a real appreciation of how realistic is the mineral resource estimate. Critical to the quality of the mineral resource estimate is how realistic is the economic mineral concentration component. In many cases, this parameter is called grade. The industry experiences increased difficulty in achieving realistic grade estimates as the sample grade variability increases. The level of transparency in a mineral resource estimate is very much a function of the competence of the author. An objective presentation of the critical data, such as grade sampling variability can assist a reader in determining if the geology of the mineral concentration is adequately understood and how realistic is mineral resource grade estimate. This paper has considered 75 NI 43-101 style reports released in the past 2 years. The review demonstrates features that were helpful in determining how realistic the mineral resource grade estimate is. If there is insufficient transparency in a report, there is a high probability that the mineral resource grade estimate will not be realistic.

"There has been a significant reduction in maintenance hours and improved performance by maintenance crews at the MacLeod mine since the introduction of a Maintenance Control system which includes the use of maintenance standards. This paper deals with the steps taken to develop and implement the program. The objectives of the program and the organization and training of the control group are outlined. The work-order system, standards application, classification of work and the preventive maintenance procedures will be discussed.All maintenance information is processed on a Model 360-20 IBM computer, which turns out maintenance records and control reports for management action. Information in these reports, and reasons for reporting, will be discussed and the benefits resulting from the program reviewed."

General Summary THIS paper attempts to describe in a preliminary and general manner the nature of certain copper discoveries now being developed by Gaspe Copper Mines, Limited, in Holland township, in the interior of the Gaspe peninsula. Some copper mineralization appears to have been known here at the time of the earliest French explorations, was rediscovered in 1921, and has been under intermittent development by Noranda Mines since 1938. In the last two years discoveries have enhanced the picture so that the deposit now promises to develop into one of the important Canadian copper producers. As ideas are constantly changing with continuing development, any picture given now is very partial and tentative and must be subject to future revision. The nature of these copper occurrences differs from others known in eastern America. In many respects they have unique features but they are most closely akin to some copper deposits found away from the intrusive rocks in the porphyry copper districts of the western United States. The most important orebodies are replacement deposits in a limestone horizon in which the ore gangue is converted to skarn. These lie at considerable distances from any known intrusive but seem to have been derived from a buried stock of granite that intrudes the sedimentary rocks of Lower Devonian age. This intrusive has produced alteration effects in the overlying rocks that may afford a key to locating other ore areas in the Peninsula.

Open pit mine management must ensure that sufficient trucks are available and are being used effectively for production, and that operating costs are under continued control and review for improvements. This paper describes methods for estimating truck fleet requirements which have been used effectively at large- and medium-sized open pit mining operations. Applied to commonly available data, multiple regression analyses can indicate when mine plans should be revised toward optimizing the number of trucks required. Prediction of major cost items for budgetary purposes is addressed, along with an example of how readily available production data can be used to reduce costs systematically.

Great advances have been made in rubber-lined pumps for the pumping of mill pulps. The Canadian Allis Chalmers alone report ov.er 300 such pumps put into service during the past four years. Pumps in which both the casing and the impeller are rubber covered have proved most economical in handling the usual run of mill pulps, effecting large savings in power, maintenance, and shutdown costs. For the handling of pulps containing comparatively large, sharper edged /articles, rubber-lined casings with hard iron impellers have been developed by the pumping departments of Hollinger and Noranda. These rubber-iron combination pumps show an appreciable reduction in overall pumping costs as compared with the all-rubber and the all-iron pumps. The power efficiency is lower in rubber-iron than in all-rubber pumps but higher than in the all-iron pumps, with lower replacement costs due to the cheap iron impellers used. Where continuous operation is essential, however, and duplication of units to take care of shutdown time for replacement of parts is not within the expenditure budget of the company, all-rubber pumps are being used t0 a greater extent. As in all items pertaining to milling operations, the economics of the situation must be studied as closely as the technical details, to arrive at the most advisable practice.

"Afton Mines Ltd. (N.P.L.) operates an 8500-tpd open-pit copper-gold mine near Kamloops, R.C. The pit is currently 480 feet deep and will reach an ultimate depth of 800 feet. The east, south and west walls of the pit are composed of Triassic andesites (Nicola Volcanic Formation) and contemporaneous sub-volcanic intrusions of micro-syenite, microdiorite, diorite and picrite-basalt (Iron Mask Pluton). The north wall of the pit consists of Tertiary sandstones, shales and mudstones (Tranquille formation) and dacitic dykes, sills, flows and tuff s (Kamloops Volcanic Formation).The Afton copper-gold orebody (30 million tons of open-pit ore with a grade of 1.0 per cent copper, 0.016 oz/ton gold and 0.12 oz/ton silver) occurs within the Triassic Iron Mask Pluton adjacent to its faulted contact with Tertiary rocks. The Triassic-Tertiary contact is a complex fault system dipping 65 degrees southward and causing the Triassic rocks to overlie the Tertiary rocks. The detailed trace of this contact is very intricate due to the mutual interference of three principal fault systems.The dominant geological structures in both Triassic and Tertiary rocks are faults striking WNW and dipping 65 degrees southward, i.e. sub-parallel to the orebody (strike faults). Cross faults and oblique faults are abundant and highly significant in some sectors of the pit. The Tertiary sedimentary rocks show an early series of northwesterly plunging folds deformed by a later series of northeasterly striking folds. Major lithological and structural boundaries divide the pit into 8 structural domain s within which the pitwall slope stability is controlled by the local geological structures and lithology.Assay data from production blasthole samples and exploration diamond drillhole samples show a log-normal frequency distribution, with a fairly low relative variance. Variograms computed from production blasthole samples show good continuity with elliptical horizontal zones of influence which are truncated by the major faults that bound the ore zone."

COMPLETED in November, 1943, at a cost of over $1,500,000, Elk River colliery of the Crow's Nest Pass Coal Company, Limited, has been laid out and equipped for an ultimate annual production of 1,000,000 tons and replaces the recently closed Coal Creek plant, which has been operated by the Company for the past forty-five years. The project has involved the opening of mines in three seams, the construction of a complete set of colliery buildings, including a modern preparation plant of 360 tons per hour capacity, and the laying out of the necessary yard tracks and spur connecting the new development with the Company-owned Morrissey, Fernie and Michel railway, which, in turn, connects with the Canadian Pacific railway at Fernie. The colliery is three and a half miles east of Fernie, B.C., near the southern end of the Crow's Nest coal field, which contains the largest and most important body of coal in the Province of British Columbia. The coal-bearing horizon is the Kootenay formation, present in the form of a syncline covering an area of 230 square miles. Most of the coal seams occur in the lower 2,000 feet of the formation, the covering beds being largely coarse sandstones and conglomerates of great thickness, the presence of which accounts largely for the preservation of the coal measures. James McEvoy, in the report of the Geological Survey of Canada for the year 1900, states that the basin appears to contain a fairly constant coal content of nearly 172 feet in 23 seams of a thickness of one foot or over. Coal has been mined in the Fernie district since 1897 and the first shipments were made from Coal Creek colliery in the following year, over the then newly constructed British Columbia Southern railway. Since that time, a total of over 16,000,000 tons of coal has been produced, an average of 350,000 tons per year. The7ears of peak production were 1910, 1912, and 1913, with an all-time high of 924,000 tons in 1913. The lowest output in the history of Coal Creek was that for the year 1933, when only 60,340 tons were produced, the colliery being closed for some months. Present production from Elk River colliery averages 1,150 tons per day, the output being considerably less than it could be were sufficient man-power available.

"The present contribution examines, in some detail, what appear to be the three outstanding features of the field occurrence of the conformable ""pyritic"" deposits. These are their association with fragmental volcanic rocks (and derivatives), their occurrence in sediments of near-shore formation, and their highly variable structural associations.In a recent paper it has been suggested that two such ""pyritic"" de-posits in New Brunswick may have originated as marine concentrations of volcanic base metal and sulphur compounds, and that many of their present features are the result of diagenesis, folding, and regional metamorphism. This is now put for-ward as a general explanation for the particular class of deposit considered.Such deposits should, on this hypo-thesis, be regarded quite simply as an integral part of the particular geological environment in which they occur -as a normal, though minor, sedimentarry type developed, char-acteristically, in near-shore and shelf facies of intravolcanic units formed along the margins of eugeosynclines. They should not be considered -as, for example, is required by the re-placement theory -as later features simply superimposed on a geological situation to which they are genetically unrelated. Where they are associated with folds and other structures, this may be attributed, from one in-stance to another, to mechanical migration during folding, weaknesses induced by pre-existing sulphides, and, occasionally, to fortuitousness.In the light of this postulated origin, it is suggested that the first stages in regional prospecting for deposits of this particular class should be broadly palaeogeographical. Later phases of the search should then be directed to the delineation of sedimentary facies and, finally, to the investigation of geological structure."

"This study investigated the psychrometric properties of ventilating air in GAL coal mines. Related measurements were done in underground openings and have been arranged as input data for computer programs prepared for ventilation network and psychrometric analysis.Results obtained from network analysis have been used for psychrometric analysis of ventilating air. Changes in heat and moisture content of air in two major path s between entry and discharge of ventilating air have been investigated. Psychrometric processes occurring in the mine were determined and are shown graphically in Figures 1 and 2. Special attention has been given to determine the changes in psychrometric properties and processes involved in the faces. Results are outlined in this paper.IntroductionThe psychrometric properties of mine air are important factors to mine productivity and efficiency. Therefore, psychrometric analysis should be made for all underground mines; any undesired situation observe d could be corrected by taking the necessary precautions.The analyses were done as a case study for GAL mines, the only mechanized lignite coal mine in Turkey. In this mine, workable reserve is about 300 million tons of coal and yearly planned production is 2.2 million tons. Production is continuing from a coal measure-bed having two coal seams with average thicknesses of 1.52 m and 1.72 m respectively. A 0.85 m shale band exists between these two seams.Two full y-mechanized faces, approximately 220 m long, usually work simultaneously. All measurements, including mine gases and air velocity, are done by sensors connected to a control room by a monitoring system.In the analysis, a line diagram is utilized to described the mine on which every junction and branch is numbered."
