In the grain refinement of aluminum, Al3Ti and TiB2 particles are introduced to reduce the casting grain size down to 200 micrometer level, which makes cold working possible. The particles are brought in by the addition of Al-Ti-B type master alloys. It is generally believed that TiB2 particles are stable and nucleate a-Al grains in solidification in the presence of extra titanium than the stoichiometry of TiB2 from the dissolution of Al3Ti particle in the master alloys. Titanium in solution either form Al3Ti layers on the surface of TiB2 particles or as solute to promote the nucleation and to restrict the growth of a-Al grains. However, a consensus on a grain refinement mechanism is still to be reached due to the lack of direct observation. This paper presents finding on the TiB2/Al3Ti interfaces in an aluminum matrix. It demonstrates a strong epitaxial growth of Al3Ti on the surface of TiB2 particles, a sign of the formation of an Al3Ti layer on the surface of TiB2 particles in grain refinement practice. The Al3Ti layer has a crystal coherency with a-Al and hence offers a substrate for heterogeneous nucleation of a-Al grains.

"The Fort Knox gold deposit is hosted within the Fort Knox Pluton, a Cretaceous multiphase granitic body that intrudes the Fairbanks schist. Gold occurs along the margins of stockwork veins and veinlets, quartz-filled shear zones, and along fractures within the granite. The mineralization is generally sulphide-poor and closely associated with trace amounts of bismuth, tellurium and to a lesser extent with molybdenum and tungsten. At present, proven/probable reserve estimates, based on a cutoff grade of 0.39 g/t Au, are 158.3 million tonnes grading 0.83 g/t Au.The Fairbanks schist comprises the bulk of the country rock. The dominant lithologies present include muscovite-quartz schist and micaceous quartzite. Immediately north and south of the main orebody, mixed metamorphic lithologies of the Cleary sequence, a subunit of the Fairbanks schist, have been mapped. Development of local zones of weakness, most likely due to a broad regional warping event, resulted in brittle-ductile deformation and activation of a northwest-southeast shear couple between contrasting lithologies.The Fort Knox Pluton consists of at least three phases based primarily on textural differences. Intrusion of a fine-grained granite was followed by a medium-grained porphyritic granite. The youngest intrusive phase is a coarse-grained, seriate porphyritic granite, the Vogt Stock. The Vogt Stock forms an elongate dome with the axis in the east-west direction. Structures displayed in the overlying units, believed to be the result of doming, include tension fiSSUres and longitudinal fractures.Premineralization fractures, the result of the magmatic doming, provided conduits for initial stockwork quartz vein development and quartz enrichment in shear zones. Weak development of vein-controlled phyl/ic, potassic, albitic, and argillic alteration styles are present. Evidence of a late thermal event resulting in a low-temperature alteration assemblage of calcite + zeolite (stilbite) + chalcedony + clay occupies breccia zones, joint surfaces, and fractures within the granite."

Although uranium deposits in northern Saskatchewan are clustered around the Athabasca basin, basement lithostructure determines their distribution. Basal Wollaston Group pelites are invariably graphitic and carry uraninite in felsic segregations and biotitic pegmatite. Where these intersect the Athabasca Formation, remobilized uranium concentrated as pitchblende. Uranium is also concentrated in silicified and hematized sandstone where the Athabasca Formation overlies post-orogenic faults. Presumably, pregnant solutions associated with the fault were stripped of their metals as they emerged into the contrasting physico-chemical environment of the sandstone basin. Both these types of mineralization correlate with a Grenvillian (-1,000 m.y.) heating event and associated diabase intrusions. However, the rich pitchblende veins at Uranium City appear to predate the Athabasca Formation, but display spatial correlation with the Martin Formation. They are tentatively associated with a syn- to post-D3 retrograde metamorphic event which thoroughly leached crystalline basement and generated uraniferous fluids which escaped, and precipitated metals, into fractures associated with faults that define the grabens in which the Martin Formation was deposited. Remobilization events allowed some of this uranium to move upward into fractures within Martin sediments.

"THE OBJECT of these notes is to initiate a discussion among the members of our Institution on the connotation of the term 'ore', and to arrive, if possible, at an acceptable definition of the term in the light of its current use by our leading mining engineers, metallurgists, •and geologists.The majority of •authors of well-known modern text-books on subjects dealing with mineral deposits define 'ore' in words which convey the meaning that it is an aggregate of minerals from which one or more metals can, under favourable conditions, be extracted profitably.Many eminent members of the Institution, and of mining and metallurgical institutions in other countries, consider that the term should not be restricted to metalliferous mineral •deposits but can also be applied correctly to certain non-metallic deposits. They believe that the growth, during the twentieth century, in the industrial importance of non-metallic minerals, and the progress made in the mining and the milling of deposits containing such minerals by methods similar to those used for metalliferous mineral deposits, no longer justify the academic restriction of the term to deposits worked for their metal content only."

This report presents a review of the distribution and exploration potential of platinum-group elements (PGE) in Québec; it is based on published and unpublished analytical data. This qualitative evaluation of the PGE potential, whether in PGE-dominant deposits or in Ni-Cu-dominant deposits with co-product PGE, is based on interelement ratios such as Ni/Pd, Cu/Ir, Cu/Pt, and Cu/Pd. Good PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with magmas fertile in PGE, are identified. Less favorable PGE targets, i.e., deposits associated with PGE-depleted magmas, are also mentioned. The importance of exploring for deposits similar to those at lac des Îles and East Bull Lake (Ontario) is emphasized.

The precipitation of hematite from ferric sulphate - cupric sulphate - lithium chloride acidic solutions was studied in a batch reactor. The effect of several variables on the extent of hematite precipitation as well as on its crystallinity and purity was investigated. The variables studied include: initial ferric concentration (1.5 - 30 g/L), retention time (0 - 12 h), initial sulphuric acid concentration (0 - 30 g/L), temperature (150 - 220 °C) and chloride concentration (0 - 25 g/L). The results show that hematite is preferentially precipitated at lower initial iron concentrations. Longer retention times increased the fraction of hematite in the precipitates but did not affect its crystallinity to a significant extent. On the other hand, higher temperatures increased the purity and crystallinity of the hematite. At lower acid concentrations hematite and goethite were precipitated. However, only hematite was precipitated when the initial acid concentration was > 12.5 g/L. Better crystalline hematite was formed at lower acidities. Increasing chloride concentration increased the amount of hematite and decreased the amount of iron sulphate hydroxide phases, but did not affect the crystallinity of the hematite.

"Liberation is a key requirement for efficient separation in mineral processing. As a consequence of this an understanding of the inherent textural features of an ore is no longer possible since during the process of liberation, texture is destroyed. Knowledge of key textural features, such as mineral grain size and distribution, prior to breakage processes provides the opportunity to understand the textural drivers for ore hardness. Modern characterisation methods, including automated SEM-based techniques, provide the possibility of measuring mineral characteristics at a range of scales. This paper discusses how textural features of two different ore types in a porphyry copper deposit can be measured and interpreted at a number of scales. Standard breakage tests conducted on the ores indicate that one of the ores can be characterised as hard and the other as soft. The impact of mineral grain size and the presence and scale of vein type structures in the two ores have been used to determine the extent to which these features influence ore hardness.INTRODUCTIONIn order to effectively convert ore into metal, knowledge of both the processing stages and the characteristics of the ore are essential. Prior to the advent of technologies that enabled the fundamental understanding of the sub-process at each stage of processing and the measurement of appropriate ore properties the most effective way to understand how an ore would respond to a process was to put it through that process, for example the way to determine how an ore would break was to first break it. Existing comminution models seek to predict the size distribution of rock fragments as the result of applied energy based on knowledge of the rock strength. It is common for these models to consider the rock as homogeneous and despite providing important data for the design and optimisation of industrial comminution circuits these models are only applicable within a narrow range of operation. In order for reliable predictive models to be developed that account for the inherent ore characteristics, a step change is required in the type of measurements that are carried out to characterise an ore and the type of data that is extracted and used as model inputs."

"The Raglan Ni/Cu property is located on the Ungava Peninsula in Northern Quebec, Canada, at a latitude of61°42' and a longitude of73°40', approximately 40 km southwest of Douglas Harbor. Geological reserves are estimated at 18 million tonnes, grading 3. 1 % nickel, 0.9% copper and smaller amounts of cobalt and platinum group metals.Extensive project development has defined the concentration process, concentrator sizing, tailings and environmental management required for this project.The grinding circuit selected is a fully autogenous primary grind, with pebble crushing and a pebble mill for secondary grinding to produce a product of 80% -70 microns for flotation.The flotation circuit is a simple circuit utilizing roughing, a regrind of rougher concentrate to 80% -20 microns, two stages of column cleaning with a cleaner scavenger bank on the column tails.Concentrate handling options were thoroughly reviewed because of the pyrophoric nature of the concentrate, remote site location and long distance to downstream processing. The preferred option, currently.is to dry the concentrate at Raglan to less than l % moisture and then pneumatically handle the powder.A detailed analysis of tailings placement options, suggests filtered tailings placement to be the preferable route for the Raglan site.INTRODUCTIONThe Raglan Project, as proposed by Falconbridge Limited, will develop extensive nickel-copper deposits in the Ungava Peninsula, Quebec, Canada. The project schedule and construction conditions in the project area are demanding. The Raglan mineral deposits have been the subject of numerous studies and evaluations over the last thirty years and the Phase I 1991 pre-feasibility document includes exploration information obtained in the 1989 and 1990 drilling seasons. This review concluded that an 800,000 tonnes of ore per year mining and concentrating complex located at Katinniq could produce 20,000 tonnes per year of nickel at competitive costs."

"IntroductionTHE SMALLER industrial and commercial steam generating plants in the United States are suffering from an ‘engineering deficiency' which, if allowed to continue, will probably result in the extinction of the species• that now burn •approximately 75 million tons of coal. We will classify as 'small' those plants which should require not more than one operating man per shift, including those in which as little .as thirty minutes per day should be adequate for .all service attention. These are the small steam plants that need the most, and get the least, expert attention for fuel :planning, equipment selection, design layout, .and proper operating technique. Dissatisfaction with bituminous coal is usually caused by one or more preventable weaknesses such as excessive or burdensome labour •for firing, .coal or ash handling and manual operation, smoke and fly ash emission above nuisance levels:, high maintenance and premium coal application for acceptable operation, and .finally, overall steam costs which are not .competitive. These 'deficiencies', so .common in the small coal-fired steam plants, can be readily eliminated by competent engineering and modern equipment with automatic controls."

"The last edition of Tax Notes expressed concern about two proposed tax changes in Finance Minister Paul Martin's 1995 budget that could have detrimental effects on Canada's mining industry. This month, Tax Notes expands on these concerns. This article is based on a paper that the author presented at ClM '95 in HalifaxIntroductionOn a global basis, there are more investment opportunities in the mining industry today than at any other time in history. Countries in Central and South America, Eastern Europe, the CIS, Central Asia, and Asia are competing aggressively to attract investment to all sectors of their domestic mining industries. Today, the demand for investment dollars exceeds the amount of dollars that are available for investment in mining. It is not surprising, then, that the established mineral producing nations are witnessing a decline in spending on exploration and development on their home turf, and an increase in spending in developing countries. In the context of a developed country such as Canada, there are two manifestations of the problem of declining investment: (I) Foreign investors are allocating more of their capital budgets to new opportunities in developing countries; and (2) Canadian juniors and seniors are spending proportionately more abroad. This shift in global spending patterns is the source of some concern for the future of Canada's mining industry, particularly because it is widely believed that the current rate of discovery of ore reserves in this country is too low to replenish depleting reserves.""Government bashing"" has always been a popular pastime in Canada. Invariably, this pastime has focussed, at !east in part, on taxation. In view of the intense competition that Canada faces on the global mining scene, it is important that the role of taxation in the decision-making process be kept in perspective. INTRODUCTION I WELCOME the opportunity to speak on Programmes in Safety. The invitation to do so shows that those guiding affairs of the Institute in this District realize the practical importance of this subject. My remarks are intended primarily for mines having 100 to 400 employees, approximately. With minor modifications, however, they apply also to larger or smaller operations. Others, I hope, will derive benefit from this paper, for they, too, have a part to play in accident prevention; for example, contractors such as shaft-sinkers; manufacturers of equipment; and consultants and designers of mining, milling, and metallurgical methods. These troubled times stress, as never before, the importance of efficient operations in mining. The days are gone when neglect can be afforded. Safe working conditions and satisfied employees are essential for efficient production at reasonable cost. The mining industry of Ontario long has been keenly aware of the human aspects of this subject, and as a whole it has done much to decrease the frequency and severity of disabling accidents. The number of fatalities per 1,000 employees has been reduced from a high of 5 some two decades ago to an all-time low of 0.89 in 1948; the incidence was slightly higher in 1949, being 1.17 per 1,000. The reduction in non-fatal compensable accidents also has been outstanding, frequency having ?been reduced from over 200 per 1,000 employees some two decades ago to 54 per 1,000 at the producing mines in 1949. These statistics demonstrate progress. Nevertheless, the general picture still leaves much to be desired when viewed from two other angles.

"The Matte Separation plant at Inco's Copper Cliff Smelter Complex is described. The continuing implementation of flotation column technology in the flowsheet in various applications is reviewed. Comparative studies on 0.038, 0.10, 1.1 and 1.8 m diameter columns have been carried out. It was demonstrated that consistent metallurgical performance was obtained with both pilot- and plant-scale units. Grade-recovery relationships for plant columns can be predicted with confidence from data obtained from test equipment. The work indicates further areas of the flowsheet in which columns present an attractive alternative to conventional cells. INCO’s MATTE SEPARATION PROCESSNickel concentrate from Inco’s Sudbury area mills has been processed in the Copper Cliff smelter for sixty years. Prior to that, Sudbury ores had been smelted directly. Historically, copper-nickel separation from smelter converter matte was achieved by the classical Orford process. In the mid-1940s Inco developed an improved separation scheme based on mineral processing methods, the Matte Separation Process. A generalized Copper Cliff Smelter Complex flowsheet is shown in Figure 1.Iron sulfide and gangue contained in the nickel concentrate are rejected in the smelting-converting process. The molten product, typically containing 50% Ni, 25% CU and 22% s, is cast at about 1000 ºC, into floor moulds and allowed to slowly cool for four days. During this period nickel sulfide (heazlewoodite, Ni,S,), copper sulfide (chalcocite, cu,S) and a copper-nickel metallic alloy precipitate and form a coarse grain structure that is amenable to separation by physical means. The phase chemistry of this system has been described previously by Sproule et al (1). This matte then becomes the feed to the Matte Separation Process.A simplified block flowsheet of the Matte Separation Process is shown in Figure 2. Matte ingots, typically weighing 20 tonnes each, are broken and crushed in a three stage crushing plant to approximately minus 0.01 m and conveyed to the Matte Separation building. Grinding is carried out in two parallel circuits each consisting of a rod and ball mill in series producing a flotation feed which is 65% minus 44 microns. Typical throughput of each grinding circuit is 650 tonnes/day. The metallic fraction of the feed is recovered by magnetic separation. This product, containing about 66% Ni and 15% CU, is a major component of the feed to the Copper Cliff Nickel Refinery."

"A 23 million dollar Flotation Plant has been commissioned at the Iron Ore Company of Canada in 1998. Nine OK-50 cells &re used to float silica in this 1,400 tomes per hour plant. The paper details project development, construction and operating results. This plant gives IOC the capability to produce not only high quality blast furnace pellets of varying silica, CaO and MgO levels, but also a high iron, DR grade pellet. The first activity was simply to sit down with the suppliers, Outokumpu, Wemco. GL&V and Svedala, to discuss applications and share experiences. We learnt what each supplier had to offer, what features would particularly suit this application, what options were offered, what were the materials of construction, how the equipment is maintained, which wear parts require replacement, etc., etc. We tried to learn as much about the equipment as the suppliers themselves knew. Then we tried to learn more: we contacted users and asked about any weak points, which options were worth incorporating and which items were not. We then discussed these points with the suppliers and established how potential problems might be overcome."

"IntroductionThe Bienfait Mine is operated by Bienfait Coal Company Ltd., one of the Luscar Limited group of companies. Situated 5 km southeast of the town of Bienfait, Saskatchewan, it can produce 2.0 million tonnes of lignite annually in addition to 158,000 tonnes of char from a carbonization plant located on the property. Geology The economically mineable coal seams of the Estevan area are found in the Ravenscrag Formation. The lignite-bearing sands, silts and clays were deposited in Early Tertiary age, in an inland sea centred in the Williston Basin of North Dakota. The top of the Ravenscrag is an erosional surface, overlain by Tertiary or Quarternary sands and gravels or glacial till. The regional structure is a gently plunging syncline which dips to the southeast at about 0.3 degrees. There are minor undulations in the Bienfait area which are due to differential subsidence during deposition. Sporadic faulting is probably a result of glacial pressures, and preglacial and glacial channels are responsible for washout zones and the abrupt irregular subcrop found in the area. There are two economic coal seams in the Bienfait area, an uppe; seam locally known as the Roche Percee, and a lower seam, the Estevan. Both seams have been extensively mined since lignite mining began in the area in the late 1800s. The Roche Percee remains only in a small portion of the Bienfait Mine and comprises a very minor portion of the reserves. It averages 1.74 m thick under 8.1 m of overburden. The till rests on top of the Roche Percee and due to weathering the seam is generally of poorer quality. The Estevan seam comprises the majority of reserves at Bienfait. The main seam which is being worked on consists of an upper bench averaging 2.75 m, a carbonaceous parting of 0.21 m, and a lower bench of 0.92 m. Overburden depth above this seam varies from 21.0 m to 38.0 m."

"More will be expected from the mine or metallurgical plant electrical system in the late 70's and 80's in terms of energy conservation, reliability and fire prevention. Increased electrical loads 1•equired by larger arc furnaces, higher-horsepower motors for mine hoists and pollution control fans, and greater use of electrical heating will have to be supplied. Computers and sophisticated instruments will be used more extensively and have less tolerance for electrical fluctuations. More extensive control and monitoring systems will be required to increase production and minimize operating and maintenance costs. Changing energy costs will prompt design engineers to investigate in-plant generation, particularly where sites are remote from existing utilities lines or steam from turbines may be used in the process. Some utilities are requiring industries to increase their power factor to above 90% ; others are requiring stricter control of voltage flicker from arc furnaces and harmonics from rectifiers. There is a trend to AC with solid-state cont1•ols instead of DC for large cranes."

"Large-diameter flotation columns are subject to severe axial mixing which has reduced column recovery and has generally limited it to cleaner applications. It has been assumed that columns with diameter greater than 1 m should be baffled to reduce axial mixing, but little work has been reported quantifying the effectiveness of baffling. Tests were done on a 0.2 m by 2 m column fitted with baffles of different geometry. It was generally found that the inclusion of baffles in the column worsened rather than improved mixing conditions in the column. This is explained in terms of a model for the effect of poor gas distribution on the behaviour of the column; this showed that under typical conditions a 16% excess of gas flux in the one compartment of a two-compartment column could result in one of the compartments being ""dead"" (i.e. with no net flow of slurry through it), resulting in a substantial loss of performance. The quality of mixing in the laboratory column was only reliably improved when the baffle was raised so that its top was positioned above the froth-slurry interface level. It should be possible to increase column recovery substantially with this configuration. The improved residence time distribution also means that columns can be used more effectively in roughing and scavenging applications. IntroductionFlotation columns have generally been used in cleaner applications, starting with their dramatic success at Mines Gaspe(1). Their lack of applications as roughers and scavengers is probably due to their poor residence time distribution (RID) when compared to the conventional cells they would replace. Espinosa-Gomez et al,(2) recently used them in rougher applications but installed three columns in series, presumably to cope with this disadvantage.Dobby and Finch in their seminal papersl(3,4) on the scale-up of flotation columns were the first to quantify the impact of axial mixing on the performance of industrial flotation columns. Laplante et al.(5) collected further data from the literature for column diameter D, ranging between 5 cm and 183 cm, gas superficial velocity Jg ranging between 0.7 cm/s and 2.8 cm/s and per cent solids in the feed S ranging between 3% and 52%. These data were analyzed with reference to the axial mixing model using the boundary conditions for closed vessels (the latter are more appropriate for flotation columns but the model is more difficult to use because analytical solutions for the RID are not available). This Notwithstanding all the debates on climate change and renewable energy, coal remains the world's no.1 primary energy source even in the 21st century. In 2011 alone, total output rose from 420 million t to around 6.6 billion t. Similar growth rates are also expected for the next few years. In order to meet demand, new seams are being tapped and others mined far more extensively. In most cases, this means a move from open-cast to deep mining, and extracting coal from ever greater depths. At the same time, extraction processes such as the room and pillar method are being replaced by longwall mining, which significantly increases seam yield and therefore output. The depth of extraction with new, modified mining methods is increasing rapidly around the world - in most countries, much more rapidly than the corresponding expertise. A trade in mining expertise has therefore developed alongside the coal trade proper. Germany relies on coal imports, but can export mining industry services and advanced mining equipment. Geological conditions in the Ruhr and Saar coalfields forced Germany to drive forward development of deep working for hard coal years ago. For 30 years now, Germany has been mining hard coal at depths of over 1,000 m, and excavation is now at depths up to 1,600 m. Deeper extraction and more extensive excavation posed new challenges for both miners and equipment. Intelligent logistics, modern roadway development methods and longwall mining with ploughs or shearers combined with optimised process coordination offered pioneering solutions - solutions to enable costeffective coal extraction in the long term without compromising safety. Countries such as Russia, the Ukraine, China and the Czech Republic, where extraction is now reaching similar depths, can now benefit from this experience: they do not need to go through the same process of trial and development, but can draw on Germany's findings and ultimately save on costs. Now, Germany is offering this knowledge and experience on the international market on a client- and deposit-specific basis to continue providing mining countries with safe and cost-effective coal mining solutions and secure the energy supply. The presentation gives a number of examples of how international mining companies have used expertise from Germany to better meet the challenges of deep mining.

Environmentally assisted cracks in linepipe steels are initiated either as a result of stresses in combination with environmental effects, as in stress corrosion cracking (SCC), or as a result of trapped hydrogen in the steel, as in hydrogen-induced cracking (HIC). To understand better the mechanism of the crack initiation process, key metallurgical and environmental elements that can affect the cracking phenomena were investigated and are reviewed in this paper. The complexity of both cracking phenomena results from the dependence of SCC and HIC on multiple metallurgical, mechanical, and environmental parameters that may all influence both crack initiation and propagation; e.g., composition, microstructure and non-metallic inclusions in the steel, applied stress, water chemistry in the field, and ionic concentrations in the groundwater near the pipe surface to name a few for SCC. In addition, for HIC phenomena, one can add the concentration of H2S in the fluids transported in the pipe as well as concentration of CO2, pH, etc. In this paper, cracking of linepipe steels is analyzed critically, with particular attention to the crack initiation process. The paper is divided into two parts: The first part covers SCC and the second covers HIC.

Mercapto organic compound SDMP was used as a depressant for separation of copper activated marmatite from pyrrhotite in the presence of butyl xanthate. Flotation results show that SDMP has strong depressing effect on pyrrhotite recovery in the absence and presence of copper ion, but has promotional effect on marmatite recovery when added together with copper ion. The flotation test of mineral mixtures shows that copper-activated marmatite could be separated efficiently from pyrrhotite using SDMP as depressant. Infrared adsorption spectra demonstrate that SDMP has a strong adsorption on pyrrhotite surface through its functional groups such as ?SH, -S03.

Most pressure oxidation operations introduce oxygen through a large multi-use nozzle in the vapour space of the autoclave. Sparge pipes extend inside the vessel to the point of discharge below the compartment agitator. However, two zinc pressure leach operations have successfully used a bottom entry oxygen sparge system for a number of years. Recently, the concept has been used in a whole ore gold pressure oxidation operation as well as a copper pressure leach plant. Both of the latter operations also introduce cooling water for temperature control through the same sparge pipe. This paper addresses the benefits of the bottom entry system with regards to autoclave performance and the positive effects on agitator performance.
