The performance of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) depends on the efficiency of the cutters, which can be influenced by geological conditions and rock mass properties. In this study, a three-dimensional numerical model, based on a discrete element method, was used to evaluate the effects of joint orientation and its spacing on the fragmentation process by a TBM cutter. Several models were constructed to study the effects of variable orientation; these models incorporated different spacing, variable spacing, different orientations on the fragmentation process, and different sections of the block model. Three parameters, consisting of induced tensile stress, induced shear stress and maximum displacement, were calculated. The stress in each section that forms chips was considered as critical stress; critical joint spacing and orientation in each section were determined. Results show that the critical orientation was in the range of 45 to 60º, where there was a possibility to achieve the maximum penetration rate. The critical joint spacing was 200 mm and, by increasing joint spacing, the value of critical stress decreased significantly. Furthermore, joint orientation could influence more than joint spacing in the rock cutting process.

Relationships of Noranda sulphide deposits to volcanic rocks are reviewed and chemical variations within the volcanic sequence are described. The assemblages of minor elements in the pyrites and pyrrhotites of the Noranda and l\llatagami deposits are similar and are characterized by a high content of cobalt, tin and other elements. Isotopic compositions of lead, other geochronological data and stratigraphically disposed zonal distributions of sulphides and minor elements indicate that the deposits were formed prior to folding and metamorphism. Lead isotope data indicate that the Matagami deposits, and several others, were probably formed about 2.95 x 109 years ago and that the Noranda deposits may be about 50 million years younger. The volcanic sequence at Noranda is younger than the thick sequences bordering it on the east and on the west. The relationships are consistent with the hypothesis that these strata-bound sul1>hide de-posits are coeval with their associated volcanic rocks. "Introduction""Pebble milling"" is a term used to describe secondary grinding done with rock pebbles rather than steel balls or other steel or metal shapes. This paper discusses pebble milling with particular attention being paid to uranium grinding circuits.Pebble milling is typically employed:a. where the cost of steel balls becomes exorbitant, as may be the case in an isolated area.b. where the extra steel added from steel ball consumption may be detrimental to further processing.c. where the over-all economics favour the use of pebbles rather than ball.Pebble milling differs from autogenous and semi-autogenous grinding in that a sized product has been removed from some part of the primary comminution circuit, and it is this sized product which is added as grinding media to the pebble milling stage. The pebbles do not necessarily have to be produced from the ore- ""foreign"" pebbles can be used. Also, pebble milling generally refers to grinding from a fine size, below about 6 mesh (3360 micron), with relatively small media, that is, secondary grinding. In South Africa, however, primary pebble mills are sometimes used to grind crusher house product, and thus function in place of rod mills. Pebbles for this service are large and heavy as they must weigh as much as balls used in similar service.The first large applications of pebble milling were in South Africa(n. ""Tube milling"" with pebbles started in 1904. The tube mill was simply a tumbling mill with a length to diameter ratio over two. A ""typical"" early tube mill was 5.5 ft. (1.7 m) in diameter and 16 ft. (4.9 m) in length. Diameters increased steadily. King(n mentions 8-ft. (2.4 m) units in his 1949 book. By 1961, the largest units discussed by Jackson('' were 12ft. (3. 7 m) in diameter."

THE purpose of this paper is to outline the pogress made in the development o the gravity separation method o ore dressing known as Sink-and-Float, which, in the opinion of the writers, has now reached a stage justifying the claim that this new method marks a highly important advance in the technique . The essential feature of the newest development of this process is the extremely accurate separation achieved. This is responsible for higher extraction in the sink-and-float unit on coarse sizes and, in consequence, for substantially higher overall recoveries. Whilst this is the most remarkable feature of the new process, it has further important contributions to make to ore dressing under the following heads: (1) The introduction of the sink-and-float separator as a buffer helps to iron-out irregularities in the mill feed. By supplying a concentrate of constant grade to the flotation section, the process also indirectly improves overall recovery. (2) The addition of a sink-and-float unit to an existing mill results in substantial increase in capacity at low per ton capital cost. (3) Where the plant can be installed underground for the pre-treatment of low-grade ores, there is a saving in hoisting costs, and excellent 'fill' is provided near the point of use. ( 4) Low-grade mixed oxide-sulphide copper ores may be pre-concentrated, thereby producing a flotation feed sufficiently rich to render the oxide residue from such flotation economic for subsequent treatment by leaching or other methods. (5) Application of the process eliminates hard gangue constituents which cause high grinding costs, or gangue constituents which adversely affect flotation. The plant is compact and easily controlled. No highly skilled operators or expensive reagents are required, and the labour and power per ton are low. The separator is extremely flexible, working equally efficiently on any throughput up to its maximum capacity.

"Interest in the efficient production and recycling of rare earth elements has increased in recent years along with the prices of these elements. The molten LiCl-KCl eutectic is one ionic solvent which can be utilized for these purposes. The LiCl-KCl eutectic has also been selected as the electrolyte for focused research for advanced pyrochemical recycling processes for used nuclear fuel in several nations. Rare earth elements are fission products with notable neutron absorption characteristics, and thorough understanding of the properties and behavior of these elements is critical to their successful partition from the electrochemically-similar actinide elements. The number of research papers investigating individual rare earth elements has greatly expanded in the approximately 35 years since the last review. These research papers are presented in a variety of languages and technical formats, making data difficult to compare, and are sometimes contradictory. A review and summary of diffusion properties of rare earths in LiCl-KCl eutectic was performed, and the data translated to a common format for evaluation. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earth elements have experienced growing importance in recent decades due to their application in high technology, including optical lenses, lasers, high-temperature superconductors, improved alloys, high energy-density batteries, and powerful magnets for compact electronic devices. Their historic production methods and uses are detailed in several texts (Hampel 1971; Bautista &Jackson 1992; Gupta & Krishnamurthy 2005). A s the p rice o f these e lements has r isen in r ecent years, so has interest in their efficient production and possible recycling options. Rare earth oxides are concentrated through hydrometallurgical techniques, but the high thermochemical stability of their oxides precludes production of rare earth metals in aqueous systems. However, the wide electrochemical window and better control of pO2- in fused salt systems allows the production of these reactive metals from their halides or oxides. The high ionic conductivity and diffusivity of the molten ionic electrolyte allow high currents with limited resistive losses (Fray 1980). Electrolytic methods in fused salts are commonly adopted for the production of bulk rare earths in a variety of molten salt systems. Fluorides are sometimes proposed for oxide electrowinning processes due to ability to dissolve the rare earth oxide, reduced hygroscopic behavior, and the wider electrochemical separation between O2 and halide gas evolution (Mohan Das, Damodaran et al. 1988; Gibilaro, Pivato et al. 2011). However, in most electrolytic production processes, such as that for mischmetal, the rare earth oxides are converted to chloride prior to electrolysis in a chloride bath (Gschneidner Jr. & Eyring 1978; Sharma 1987). Of the chlorides, the LiCl-KCl eutectic is one specific medium in which metal production and production-related investigations have been conducted (Gschneidner J r. & Eyring 1978; Driscoll & Fray 1993). L iCl-KCl eutectic has the advantages o f h igh conductivity, but relatively low viscosity and operating temperature. The low operating temperature allows simpler design, with reduced energy consumption, salt volatility and cell corrosion."

"IntroductionThe Key Lake uranium-nickel deposits are located within a Mineral Lease centred at latitude 57 ° 12' north and longitude 105 °39' west along the southeastern rim of the Athabasca sedimentary basin in northern Saskatchewan, approximately 240 km north of La Ronge (Fig. 1). Access is provided by an allweather provincial highway from Pinchousc, situated about 200 km to the south, and a private airstrip maintained at the mincsitc.These deposits have been developed by Key Lake Mining Corporation on behalf of the Saskatchewan Uranium Joint Venture. Participants in the joint venture include Saskatchewan Mining Development Corporation (50%), Urancrz Exploration and Mining Limited (33 1/3 %) and Eldor Resources Limited (16 2/3 %).Considerable geological work has been conducted on the Key Lake orebodies and reported in summary papers published by Dahlkamp and Thn, (1977), Dahlkamp, (1978), Gatzweiler eta/., (1979) and Kirchner el a/. , (1980). However, intensive geological research is ongoing, particularly since many problems regarding ore genesis and controls remain unresolved . Exploration History and DevelopmentThe events (Gatzweiler eta/., 1980) which led to the discovery of the Key Lake ore bodies began in the summer of 1971 by following up on the reports of airborne radiometric anomalies and anomalous radon values in the Zimmer Lake water situated approximately 5 km to 6 km to the southwest. This work succeeded in locating a few high-grade uranium and nickel-bearing boulders associated with esker material. An integrated program, consisting of various geochemical and geophysical surveys along with diamond drilling, culminated in the discovery of the Gaertner orebody during July 1975. Subsequent fence drilling across the strike extensions of this ore structure located the Deilmann deposit, approximately I km to the northeast, in June 1976"

The primary motivation underlying the proposal of polygeneration systems for mine sites is to increase the efficient use of natural resources by combining different technologies and energy resources while satisfying energy service demands. For many mineral producers, particularly in Canada?s mining extremes of climate and depth, energy in support of mineral production can be the second largest cost centre after labour. A generic methodology is proposed for the design of energy supply systems in mine sites, based on a search for the minimum discounted cost of energy supplied for all feasible different plant configurations. These configurations can be represented within a connectivity matrix which corresponds to a network representation. A Mixed Integer Programming formulation is set out for the multiperiod synthesis and operational planning problem. This is characterized by i) binary variables for the selection of technologies, ii) integer variables for the determination of the number of units installed, and iii) by continuous variables for the representation of energy and economic flows. Through the integration of particular energy supply strategies matching specific mine circumstances (on-grid, remote, degree days, etc) and consideration of technologies that improve energy efficiency, hitherto not considered new technologies and demand management systems or new perspectives on optimal mine site energy supply can be investigated. Some of these investigations identify the economic conditions through which biomass energy feedstocks should be used, for direct heat production, for gasification and providing for Fischer-Tropsch syndiesel manufacture. As well as integrating demand from mobile diesel-fuelled plant into an optimization procedure that hitherto has only been considered for static energy production and consumption plant, this analysis shows how the techniques can be used to explore economic conditions of threshold prices for biomass (purpose-grown biomass and peat are considered herein) and trucked-in diesel. The methodology also allows for electricity and syngas storage and diesel and biomass bunkering. Within the paper the energy demands for a remote, open pit mining operation located in Northern Ontario are considered as a case study to illustrate the technique and investigations. As expected, for mines close to electricity, natural gas, and diesel distribution infrastructures, the optimal choice is to connect. When a constraint is applied specifying that connection is not possible, as would be for the case exemplified, the optimal choice includes some of the more exotic options for mine site energy supply.

"The Cerro Verde copper-molybdenum porphyry mine, majority owned and operated by Freeport- McMoRan Copper & Gold, is located 30 km southwest of Arequipa Peru. The concentrator, which produces copper and molybdenum concentrates, started operating in late 2006 with a 108,000 tpd design capacity, processing primary sulfide ore (mainly chalcopyrite and molybdenite). Plant capacity was recently increased to 120,000 tpd. The comminution circuit consists of one 60” x 113"" primary crusher, four MP-1000 secondary crushers in closed circuit with dry screens, four 2.4m x 1.6m High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGRs) in closed circuit with wet screens, and four 7.3m x 11m gearless ball mills in closed circuit with cyclones. The HPGR circuit is fed by the Secondary Crushing circuit product at a T80 of 35 millimeters, and the HPGR circuit product feeds the Ball Mill circuit at a T80 of 3000 microns.This paper describes operating experiences with HPGRs during these first four years highlighting improvements in operating practices and presentation of data regarding operational efficiencies, also discussed are the primary benefits provided by HPGRs such as production of micro fractured particles, reduced ore Bond Work Index, and reduced power consumption. Cerro Verde represents the first installation of HPGRs in both the copper industry and large scale hard rock mining."

Using Unity 3D as a collaborative multi-user virtual on-line environment, an interactive virtual underground mine platform (IVUMP) is being developed to provide on-line access to mine safety preparedness training with a focus on mine emergency response exercises (MEREs). Communication and information flow among MERE participants and their actions can be monitored, recorded and evaluated. A mine ventilation simulation utility VFIRE is being incorporated to enhance the realism and interactive nature of the ?in-world? exercises as well as extend its functionality to include training in real-time ventilation and fire control.

This paper discusses an ongoing field study in southern Illinois (USA) that focuses on: 1) Identifying mechanisms of instability in the set-up rooms (SR) and their T-junctions with headgate and tailgate entries, 2) Developing alternate 3-entry and 4-entry set-up rooms geometry using 3-D numerical analyses, 3) Implementing developed geometries in cooperation with mining professionals and regulatory agencies, and 4) Demonstrating performance of implemented geometries through field monitoring. Illinois longwall mining operations typically experience ground control problems (roof falls, rib sloughing, floor heave, etc.) within SR layouts and around the T-junctions of SR. These occur around the areas where the SR for adjacent longwall face (to be mined) connect with the SR of the previously mined face, and around the tail-gate entries of the mined-out longwall face and around the T-junctions of SR. The problems manifest as highly fractured immediate roof strata, major shear zones in the roof, horizontal displacements within the excavations that result in shearing off the heads of the bolts, floor heave and severe rib sloughing. Similar observations have also been made in longwall mining in Utah.

This paper describes the progresses used in the manufacture of steel wheel-centres, tyres and axles at the works of the Commonwealth Steel Products Co., Newcastle, N.S.W., Australia. The plant is adjacent to the Northern railway and consists of three main buildings, namely: the foundry, the forging and rolling shop, and the machine shop. The foundry contains a 6-ton Heroult electric furnace, together with all necessary mechanical appliances for moulding. Reheating furnaces, steam hammers and tyre rolling mill are installed in the forging shop. The machine shop contains lathes, boring machines, and hydraulic presses. Until this plant commenced operations all wheels used in Australia were imported, previ.ous to the war, from England and Germany, and latterly from England only. Besides being of great benefit to the country in that there is now a domestic source of supply of these articles, there is also the advantage of retaining the home market; and in addition, a small portion of the population are now engaged in highly technical occupations requiring a great degree of skill. The plant began to operate in October 1919, and by 1921 was in a fair way to meet the domestic demand for those articles of railroad equipment which it manufactures.

"Abstract—Detailed oxygen isotope mapping of rhyolites in and around the Kidd Creek mine indicates that the orebodies are associated with relatively low (<12‰) whole rock values that extend up to 200 m laterally from ore. The zone of low d18O values is overlain stratigraphically by a carapace of higher (>13‰) values that extends up to 1.5 km laterally from and 300 m to 500 m above ore. Immediately above the stratigraphically highest orebody this carapace is cut by a zone of lower d18O values extending from the ore zone. Zones of higher d18O values also occur in massive rhyolite bodies that occur in the footwall of the orebodies.The zone of low d18O values partly coincides with a Na2O depletion anomaly associated with hydrothermal alteration, except that the Na2O depletion anomaly has a greater lateral extent, and the low d18O anomaly extends farther into the stratigraphic hanging wall. These data suggest that d18O mapping may detect hanging wall alteration above massive sulfide bodies more effectively than conventional lithogeochemistry. Zones of high d18O values, which define zones through which large quantities of low-temperature hydrothermal fluids have passed, may also have usefulness in exploration.Oxygen isotope variations at Kidd Creek record three stages of a hydrothermal system that evolved in temperature with time, as follows: (1) an early, low-temperature event that produced rocks with high d18O values, (2) a high-temperature event that produced rocks with lower d18O values, and (3) a later, low-temperature event that also produced rocks with high d18O values. The high d18O signature of the massive rhyolite was recorded during early-stage, low-temperature (<200°C) alteration, and was probably preserved owing to decreases in permeability associated with low-temperature silicification. The low d18O signature of cherty breccia and chloritite was recorded during the thermal peak at >300°C. High d18O values in the carapace above the deposit were recorded as the hydrothermal system waned."

In this paper we present the results of preliminary investigations into the applicability of new laboratory scale tests for the prediction of operating gap and specific throughput in high pressure grinding rolls (HPGR). The work is a part of the CAMIRO HPGR research program being conducted at the University of British Columbia, which aims to develop a suite of small-scale tests and procedures for the selection and sizing of HPGRs. A focus of the presented study is to test sample types in terms of their terra-mechanics based characteristics and relate them to specific throughput and gap results from pilot HPGR testing on the same samples.

During the last three years prospecting has been active in southeastern Manitoba and a number of interesting gold, nickel and copper deposits have been discovered within an area 90 miles north of the international boundary, and extending about 40 miles westerly from between mileage 60 and 110 on the Manitoba-Ontario boundary. As known at present, two-thirds of this area of 2,000 square miles is underlain by pre Cambrian granite and granite gneiss and is not likely to contain mineral deposits of economic importance. The remaining one-third is underlain by metamorphosed sediments and lavas (greenstones), penetrated by the granite and granite gneiss and, at various localities, cut by bosses, sills, or dykes of gabbro, diorite, granodiorite, and other types of intrusives. The nickel, copper, and gold mineralization accompanied or followed the intrusion of these different rock types. The gold deposits are limited in distribution, so far as known, to the northern part of this prospecting area and occur along Manigotagan and Wanipigow rivers. These deposits have recently been described in some detail, (3) and therefore only the copper and copper-nickel deposits of the southern part of this area, along Oiseau and Maskwa rivers, will be described in this paper.

"Friction stir welding (FSW) process in lap configuration for dissimilar materials has been developed and tested for steel to aluminum joining. A novel cylindrical tool was designed for improved material flow. The joining of steel to high strength 5xxx and 6xxx aluminum was carried out by FSW technique using optimized process parameters. The microstructure, micro-hardness, joint strength and corrosion properties at the weld interface have been investigated. Optical and scanning electron microscopy reveled a well layered structure at the interface and lap shear tests of the welds showed excellent fracture resistance. Neutral salt spray tests for up to 500 hours (ASTM B117) were carried out on the bare steel to aluminum FSW joints, which did not show neither evidence of corrosion at the weld interface, nor any degradation of the weld strength. The FSW lap configuration was applied to prototype commercial vehicle structural component whereby a steel stiffener insert was friction stir welded to high strength 6xxx aluminum alloy. The interface microstructure showed layered root without any steel shattering in aluminum side. A finite element study was carried out to quantify the benefits where it was found that the stiffness increases by 76% under bending loads and 36% in torsion loads.INTRODUCTION Energy preservation and environmental issues, namely carbon footprint and legislation around emission in transportation industries has led to a growing need to use of lightweight materials such as aluminum and magnesium alloys along with various grades of steel in structural application, while still maintaining their strength and crashworthiness. Assembling dissimilar materials within integrated structure is thus a stringent requirement related to optimum performance. In order to achieve an efficient technology of joining dissimilar materials such as aluminum to steel, it remains difficult to select an effective welding process for a given joint configuration. The use of aluminum in transportation industries for structural component is not exclusive in a design and is almost always used along with various steel grades for a mixed materials solution, thus dissimilar aluminum/steel lap joining is of great interest since this is widely used in the assembly of parts (e.g. pillar, frame rails, chassis, body in white (BIW), CAB, etc.)."

"In mineral processing, it is often very difficult to reliably measure several key operation variables. The harsh environment and high temperature encountered in pyrometallurgy processes lead to some difficulties when selecting the instruments, valves and actuators. If an important variable cannot be measured or manipulated adequately, controlling it can really become a big challenge. Sometimes, it is simply impossible to find the perfect equipment for the task. To help overcome these difficulties, a different approach is required. This approach will not correct the inherent problems related to the instruments and valves, but will cope with these problems. This article will demonstrate how modern process control techniques can be used to solve complex problems while remaining easy to implement. In this article we will described how soft sensors and multivariable fuzzy logic control were implemented at Koniambo Nickel to stabilize the furnace feed and allow for safe and reliable operation of an 80 MW DC arc furnace.INTRODUCTION Process Overview The process plant at Koniambo Nickel SAS is located in the North Province of New Caledonia, 310 km north of Noumea. The nickel-bearing ore is mined in the nearby Koniambo massif. After being screened and crushed, the ore is transported to the processing plant using a 12 km conveyor. After stacking in two blending piles, the ore, containing 2.3% nickel, is fed to the processing plant where it will go through the NST process (Nickel Smelting Technology) before being sent to refining and shotting. This article will focus on the improvement to control of the NST processes. The first steps of this process consist of milling the ore and removing all moisture through calcining (Figure 1)."

The mine is entered by a central vertical shaft, strongly timbered, and containing two compartments-one for the passenger cage, the other for the large skips bringing the ore to the surface. A man-way, for emergencies, is also provided, parallel to the shaft. The cage is a single-deck steel box, carrying about thirty persons; by means of arrangements above and below, it can also hoist and lower materials needed in the workings. Levels are run at intervals of 100 feet. In special cases, where the ore conditions warrant, sub-levels are operated, such as those at 1,113 feet and 1,123 feet (Fig. 7), which are connected by winzes with the 11 th level. One of these was pushed for 40 feet, and then abandoned because it was unprofitable to take up ore of the grade encountered. The ore between levels is removed by stoping. The drifts follow the course of the veins as much as possible, with numerous cross-cuts. Winzes, raises, connections, etc., are blasted out where needed. The main drifts are at least 8 ft. high by about 9 ft. wide. All former narrow drifts had to be widened some time ago, by ruling of the Ontario Department of Mines, to lessen the danger of accidents with cars in the small passages. Accurate plans of the under-ground workings are kept in the office, and extensive surveying is always being done underground to keep the maps up to date, measure the cubical contents of stopes, and so forth. Timber is extensively used in the construction of supports and chutes, and in the sinking of the shaft. "Can the ever-increasing tonnages of ore and waste being mined today be accommodated simply by using bigger and better crushers? This paper updates the principal author’s earlier publication, “Crushing Plant Design and Layout Considerations” (SME Mineral Processing Plant Design, Practise, and Control, 2002). It reviews the latest primary crushing and large cone crusher designs. Its goal is to help consultants and operators select the optimal equipment and custom-designed items in the material handling flowsheet from the mine to the mill, maximizing operating hours per year.INTRODUCTIONAre larger crushers the answer to meeting the demands of existing or new mining projects for increased tonnage? The principal author’s previous paper in the year 2002 on ""Crushing Plant Design and Layout Considerations"" provided a detailed design and layout review for the design of primary and fine crushing (Secondary, Tertiary, Quaternary) mineral processing facilities. Some of the conclusions in this previous paper had predicted that larger crushers for primary and fine crushing would be beneficial and contribute to the further development of mineral processing. Larger crushers for primary and fine crushing applications are now available.The rock size reduction process, from the mine to the selected milling process facility has not changed since man first broke a rock to get at the interesting mineralization within. The rock size reduction process circuit from the mine to the mill can be summarized into four (4) stages:• Stage 1: Mining ( Rock Breakage and Fragmentation)• Stage 2: Pre-Screening (Scalping)• Stage 3: Primary Crushing• Stage 4: Fine Crushing (Secondary, Tertiary and Quaternary; the crushers used in this stage are identified by the titles which usage has conferred on them)Plant throughput and ore delivery schedule will form the basis for flowsheet design and equipment selection. Once a project's design criteria and the mine plan has been established, the actual circuit's utilization percentage (percentage of hours when the circuit is being utilized) can be optimized for each of the four stages. The mining and process departments are the key stake holders in the selection of the final comminution circuit and both departments should be familiar with and contribute to the design of the circuit."

"Of twenty-one ore deposits in British Columbia which are either in production or advanced stages of exploration, five have potassium-argon ages in a range of 165-205 m.y., eight are in a range of 44-55 m.y. and the remainder are either ca. 140 m.y. or ca. 100 m.y. old. Deposits of the oldest group have generally similar geological environments and radiometrically indistinguishable ages of magmatic and hydrothermal minerals. Deposits of the youngest group also have similar geological environments, with successive magmatic and hydrothermal events closely intermingled in time and place. Such deposits find no comfortable home in existing classifications of ore deposits. 1t is suggested, therefore, that those epigenetic deposits which can be shown by radiometrie and/or geologie means to be coeval with genetically related magmatism be designated as ""paramagmatic deposits."""
