A novel separation process for detoxifying cadmium-containing residues arising from zinc hydrometallurgical processes has been developed. An initial investigation indicated that a high concentration of zinc in the sulfate solution can be effectively separated from cadmium by solvent extraction with P204 (di(2-ethylhexly)phosphoric acid, D2EHPA). The mixture of sulfuric acid and ammonium citrate ((NH4)3C6H5O7) is thus used to extract metals from the residue at room temperature. Copper in the leachate is recovered by solvent extraction (SX) with LIX 973. Cobalt in the raffinate from the copper SX process is recovered by precipitation with a-nitroso-ß-naphthol. The results show that more than 50% of the copper and virtually all the zinc, cadmium and cobalt in the residue can be leached under the experimental conditions used here. Virtually all dissolved copper and cobalt can be recovered in the subsequent solvent extraction and precipitation processes. The presence of (NH4)3C6H5O7 could significantly facilitate the extraction of zinc by D2EHPA in the subsequent separation of zinc and cadmium. More than 97% of the dissolved zinc can be recovered through a two-stage counter current solvent extraction process. After separating copper, cobalt and zinc, cadmium can easily be recovered from the solution either by cementation with zinc powder or by electrowinning, while the purified solution can be recycled back to the leaching process.

Each operation is required to design and implement an ARD and Mineral Waste Management Plan. Successful implementation of the plan requires commitment at all levels of the company, from senior management, to geologists, mine planners, environmental staff and equipment operators. Examples of the successful integration of ARD management strategies into mine operations are cited from several mines.

Today, the mining and mineral sectors are being impacted by highly fluctuating supply ? demand, extreme price volatility and tremendous market uncertainty on a world-wide basis. This pattern is expected to continue for the foreseeable future. In particular, large consumers of tonnage quantities of industrial gases (oxygen, nitrogen) all have to make informed investment decisions in this uncertain economic environment. Plant owners ? operators need to carefully examine their current and future industrial gas needs in order to develop the most cost-effective industrial gas plant configuration. This can be done by partnering with an experienced engineering company that offers a complete technology portfolio for producing industrial gases. Ideally, the mineral and engineering companies have to work together as a single team to identify the most efficient and economic plant design. This includes an in-depth assessment of capital and operating costs, in order to deliver an optimal solution, taking plant reliability and process safety into account. It is important to consider all the industrial gas needs at a given manufacturing complex, in conjunction with available utilities and infrastructure to develop the best possible long term solution. Oxygen (O2) requirements include: oxygen enriched and oxy-fuel combustion, smelting and hydrometallurgical operations. Nitrogen (N2) is used for annealing. All of these industrial gas requirements have to be examined at a given site over a long term horizon in a holistic manner. Cryogenic air separation was first practiced at a commercial scale in 1902. Since then, the technology has been constantly refined to reduce cost; and improve reliability and flexibility. Today, using advanced engineering techniques, including proprietary process simulation, and modern fabrication techniques, it is possible to build air separation plants that are both low cost and high quality at the same time. It is important to work with an engineering company that owns a complete portfolio of industrial gas technologies, functional engineering capabilities and a variety of plant solutions. Such a partnership can quickly identify a ?sweet spot? for a given situation. By drawing on experience gained from hundreds of projects, it is possible to quickly optimize a given requirement. In situations where a customer wants a complete solution it may be appropriate to provide an air separation plant on a turn-key basis. This will enable the mining and mineral processor to focus on their core business. By using global procurement and construction capabilities it is possible reduce cost and improve project execution, thereby making industrial gas plant procurement simpler and cheaper for the mining and mineral sector.

"Steel media wear is a major cost component in mineral processing. In the case of existing operating mill, steel media wear prediction can be used to help compare the performance of steel media from different suppliers before completing marked ball tests. It can also be used to investigate how ores from different site of a given mine affect steel media wear. In the case of Greenfield cases, steel media wear prediction can be used to estimate the cost of steel media for a given feasibility study.This paper presents a wear testing and prediction methodology that ties together abrasion wear and corrosion wear testing results through the use of a simplified discrete element charge motion model. The experimentation dimension to this methodology takes samples for steel media, mine site ore and water to determine abrasive and corrosive wear parameters of a given media, ore, water set.The test methodology development is illustrated along with a comparison of wear predictions with observed wear rates in some operating mills. A case study is included that illustrates how this methodology was used to estimate steel media wear performance. The paper closes with a discussion on the use of parts of the experimental methodology to investigate other abrasive wear conditions such as liner wear, paste backfill piping and ore breakage as well as avenues for future test development.INTRODUCTIONThe cost of comminution processes represents a significant part of the overall costs of a mining operation. Grinding media/liner wear alone accounts for 15-25% of the total operating cost. The annual steel grinding media consumption is approximately 2.5 mtpa or 0.3% of total world steel production [Smorgon Steel Group, 2005]. Using an estimated grinding media cost of about US$0.75/kg [Halbe and Smolik, 2002], gives a media cost of over US$1.875 billion per annum. Mining continues to shift towards exploitation of lower grade ores as the higher grades get depleted. These low-grade ores require finer grinding for the liberation of the value minerals, and hence it can be assumed that grinding media consumption will also continue to rise.The Bond abrasion test, dating back to 1963, [Weiss, 1985] is still used to estimate the total mill media wear. "1.0 SummaryThe Pierina deposit was acquired in August 1996 when Barrick Gold Corporation purchased Arequipa Resources, a junior mining company with extensive land positions in Peru. At the time of acquisition, Arequipa had developed two exploration tunnels and drilled 9 exploration holes on the property. Metallurgical tests, conducted on samples taken from the tunnels and the exploration holes indicated that the ore was amenable to heap leaching. Barrick’s exploration team recognised from the outset, the potential of the mineralisation and convinced Barrick’s senior management that this was indeed a world class deposit that should be pursued. On November 25, 1998, the first dore was poured at Pierina, 27 months from the time of acquisition. During that period Barrick completed its exploration programme, prepared a development plan including capital and operating costs, production profiles and cash flow forecasts, and a schedule to develop a mine and construct a leach pad and gold recovery plant, including all supporting infrastructure. All permits and environmental approvals were obtained and all necessary land was acquired. The project was completed on schedule and under budget. This was the first greenfield mine development for Barrick outside of North America.This paper details, mainly, the research and development, engineering, construction and commissioning of the metallurgical process facilities.2.0 The Develonment ProgrammeImmediately after the acquisition, Barrick began the process of gathering information required to prepare a project development plan. INFINIUM, Inc. is scaling up a new molten salt electrolysis process for producing rare earth metals. Instead of conventional carbon anodes, this process uses Pure Oxygen Anodes™ which employ a stabilized zirconia solid electrolyte between the molten salt and anode. This eliminates two problems with today's rare earth metal production technology. First, it eliminates carbon anodes and contamination of the product by carbon and its impurities, enabling 10-100 times larger batch size than current practice, and lower labor costs. Second, it eliminates emissions of perfluorocarbons (PFC) such as CF4 and C2F6, which are very problematic greenhouse gases with 6000+ times the global warming potential of CO2. The zirconia also enables a sealed vessel with no LiF emissions, creates a reducing environment enabling use of low-cost welded steel vessels, and either produces a high-purity oxygen by-product or can use natural gas to reduce the necessary electrical energy with no HF production. This paper will describe the technology and its current status for rare earth metal production.

Most of the recent growth in nickel demand has been for the production of stainless steels and virtually all of it has been satisfied by new ferronickel and nickel pig iron projects. But "good" laterite resources are more and more difficult to find: Ni grades are decreasing while Fe contents are increasing and SiO2/MgO ratios vary from 1 to 3 and even higher if limonites are included. Predicting the smelting behaviour of such ores requires a more fundamental understanding of the thermodynamics of these systems in commercial operations. One valid question is thus whether these furnaces are at thermodynamic equilibrium or not. The present paper investigates this question, compares calculated and measured O2 partial pressures and mechanical/chemical slag loss ratios and concludes that ferronickel furnaces are not at thermodynamic equilibrium. This departure from expectation is actually to the operators’ advantage: the targeted ferronickel grades can be obtained at lower reduction potentials than calculated from pure thermodynamics.

"The Pogo project is located on the Goodpaster River, 38 miles north of Delta Junction in east central Alaska. Sumitomo Metal Mining and Teck Corporation are planning to develop a 2,500 ton per day underground mine and mill at Pogo. A preliminary resource of 5.5 million ounces of gold has been identified in two flat lying lenses. An underground adit has been developed to facilitate underground drilling of the deposit and to provide samples for bench and pilot scale metallurgical testwork.Flowsheet development included the evaluation of several processing options. The final flowsheet selected includes SAGhall mill grinding, gravity concentration with intensive cyanidation and direct electrowinning, sulfide flotation with ultrafine regrinding, and cyanide leaching and CIP gold recovery from the flotation concentrates. Flotation tailings will be filtered for placement in a dry stack storage facility or disposed of as paste backfill underground. All of the CIP tailings will be disposed of underground as paste backfill. A pilot plant was carried out to evaluate the proposed flowsheet described above and to confirm the gravity recovery predictions.Great care was taken in the development of the flowsheet and site layout concepts to mitigate the environmental impact of the proposed operation. An overview of the site water management concepts is presented and the impact of water issues on the process flowsheet is discussed."

The project to rebuild the smelting furnaces at the Anglo American - Barro Alto ferronickel smelter, located in Goias, Brasil, was initiated in September 2013. To optimize the capital cost, while maximizing furnace integrity and robustness, a design basis giving flexibility to ore composition variation was developed in order to ensure sustained nameplate production. The resulting capital efficient, fasttracked project execution was accomplished through the creation of an integrated project team of Anglo American and Hatch through FEL 3 and FEL 4 phases of the project. The integrated team addressed the project challenges through a cooperative and versatile approach, created by access to knowledge, experience and systems in both Anglo American and Hatch. The team could operate at an optimized speed of execution, as demonstrated in the FEL 3 and FEL 4 completion durations, as well as efficiently mitigating any risks of increasing cost or delaying schedule by utilizing lessons learned and team knowledge from Anglo American on the original green-field project and Platinum smelters and Hatch on similar reference ferronickel furnace rebuilds. Other critical drivers of project cost minimization and revenue loss/generation (considering production revenue of each furnace) are scheduled durations for construction, commissioning and ramp-up. The integrated team commenced construction, commission and ramp-up planning almost one year in advance of the shutdown and this paper will discuss the strategies developed to reduce risks and optimize the construction schedule to mitigate revenue loss and optimize ramp-up time to sustained operation at nameplate capacity.

At the 25th Annual B.C. Mine Reclamation Symposium in September 2001, Huckleberry Mines Limited received the Jake MacDonald Reclamation Award for its exemplary mine waste management plan, conceived to prevent the onset of acid mine drainage and facilitate reclamation of the site. The mine is an excellent example of a total mine waste management plan, with all materials scheduled in detail for the life of the mine. The filling plan for the waste management facility takes into consideration the requirement for permanently flooding the potentially acid generating rock. From an acid generation point of view, the tailings fall in the zone of potentially acid generating material. To avoid long-term ARD concerns, it is planned to float pyrite out of the tailings towards the end of the mine life, thereby generating a non-acid generating tailings stream which will be used to cap the deposited mine waste. The pyrite-rich tailings will be discharged into the deeper portion of the impoundment. On closure, a permanent water cover will be maintained over the mine waste. Only beaches of non-acid generating tailings will remain exposed. Mining will be phased to also allow one of the pits to provide storage for potentially acid generating rock and to be flooded at the end of mine life.

"In this paper we present the results of a combined remote sensing - numerical modelling study to improve our understanding of groundwater seepage in open pit and natural rock slopes, and to investigate the interaction between groundwater, in-situ stress conditions and brittle fracture. The location of seepage is a key element in the characterisation of rock slope stability in open pits and natural slopes; definition of the fracture network geometry and its inter-relationship with seepage, however, remains a challenge in engineering practice. Current techniques used to characterize groundwater seepage locations require direct access to the rock slope for a detailed and exhaustive investigation, and can be severely limited due to access and the limited coverage of the survey methods both with respect to the height and length of the sampled rock slope. Herein, we describe remote sensing methods, which allow the collection of structural and seepage information over a wide spatial area. Remote sensing techniques are shown to have the potential to provide additional insights into the orientation and general connectivity of fractures that may play a major role in the general stability of a rock slope. A preliminary methodology for the use of remote sensing in the characterization of seepage zones in a natural slope through the application of ground-based LiDAR and Infrared Thermography (IRT) is presented.One of the most challenging problems in rock slope engineering is the realistic simulation of fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes. Deformation and the development of brittle fractures can cause significant local changes in the permeability and strength of the rock mass, potentially affecting rock slope performance. Understanding fluid flow through fractured and deforming rock slopes, especially in highly-stressed environments is of great importance for slope stability analysis. Changes in the interconnectivity of fractures during slope failure are an important, yet are relatively unstudied in rock slope engineering. We present the results of hydromechanical UDEC-Trigon rock slope models focussing on the potential role of brittle fracture in rock slope failure, its interaction with groundwater pressures, and the influence of the assumed in-situ stress ratio. Damage intensity parameters are used to characterize damage within different regions of a biplanar slope failure."

"Canada developed pioneering rare earth solvent extraction methods to recover the rare earths and thorium as by-products of uranium recovery operations in Elliot Lake, Ontario, and was a major supplier of these key elements from about 1960 until 1990. At one stage, Elliot Lake was supplying perhaps one third of the world’s yttrium as well as much of its thorium. This paper reviews the development of Canada’s early rare earth and thorium production facilities. INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths and thorium were first identified in the early 19th century but were little more than curiosities for the next century. However, in the mid-1960s the invention of rare earth-based phosphors for the cathode ray picture tube used in colour television sets launched a major demand for certain rare earths.The use of thorium as an alloying agent in aircraft and missiles grew rapidly in the late 1950s. In the same period, demand for uranium for both weapons and power production soared. Also in the late 1950s, the Elliot Lake uranium-thorium-rare earth deposits (also known as the Blind River deposits) were discovered. This conjugation of events led to uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp, quickly followed by the co-production of thorium and, later, the rare earths.Uranium production in the Elliot Lake camp continued from 1955 to 1996. Thorium was produced continuously from 1959 to 1969. Rare earths were produced, intermittently, from 1965 to 1990. Complete production records are not readily available but unquestionably Elliot Lake made a significant contribution to world thorium and the rare earth production. This paper, presented earlier in an abbreviated form (Goode, 2012), is intended to present as much of the information that is available."

Sohio Petroleum Company's new L-Bar uranium mill near Grants, New Mexico. refines 2722 kilograms of yellowcake daily from 1360 metric tons of ore produced at Sohio 's J.J. No. 1 mine and other nearby mines. This paper follows the ore from the mine through the various processing steps - semi-autogenous grinding, acid leaching , countercurrent decantation, solvent extraction , ammonium diuranate precipitation, washing and drying, and tailings disposal.

"Safety performance in many companies and even industries has stalled in the few years. Accidents rates are at a "plateau" and yet, serious accidents and fatality rates are not. In more dramatic cases, such as in the BP Texas disaster, organizations that have "exemplary" safety statistics, suddenly have a catastrophic or multi-fatality event occurring. Other classic examples are the Piper Alpha disaster and NASA’s Challenger and Columbia disasters and even the Chernobyl nuclear reactor. Looking into the root causes of these accidents provides an insight into the events and deficiencies that led up to the accident, but what are the common features in the organization’s mindset? What characterizes these organizations’ decision-making, their approach to safety and to risk and are there specific cultural features that can be delineated? The research and review presented in this paper covers a period since 1994, which started in the Australian resource industry and since then covered international events. The features of these organizations are summarized as the seven deadly delusions, based on extensiveresearch since 1997 of organizations that suffered unexpected disasters.The Piper Alpha Oil Rig disaster in the North Sea, on the 6 July 1988, was one of the most pivotal events in safety around the world. It changed the thinking and focus of governments, whole industries and led to numerous books and papers. It resulted in new legislation, textbooks and a critical self-examination by the oil and gas industry.In short, an explosion and fire occurred when a pipe started leaking gas and ignited. A temporary flange, with no safety valve, was used to block off this pipe during a maintenance operation the previous shift. The permit to advise operators not to start the pumps on this line was misplaced and lost. Several deficiencies, problems and system failures coincided. A key factor was that the water deluge system was inoperable at the time and failed to extinguish the large fire that erupted, followed by an even larger gas explosion. The accommodation unit, situated on top of the oil rig, was the main "killing field" - most men gathered here to await instructions (which never came) and where they died from smoke inhalation. Later, a large explosion of the gas pipeline from an adjoined rig exploded and killed more people.The line of events and the associated system failures are all very relevant in the analysis of the accident, and provide the only insight into what caused the accident. But much "further back", inside the organization’s culture, lurks more dark matter. The first inclination is to ask what was "deficient" in the culture. Did they not care enough about safety, or about their people? Did they have a culture where production decisions were more important than safety considerations? Did they ‘coerce’ supervisors and employees to ignore safety precautions or did they just "fly by the seat of their pants"?Not surprisingly, it is very difficult to identify the true nature of the culture in that business because in such an aftermath of death and destruction, no one dare say that the safety culture was a ‘positive one, focused and caring’ or that the company was doing well in safety and that this is only a freak accident. Indeed, there were many deficiencies in the organization’s systems and procedures, such as the permit to work system.But there are some niggling questions: How is then that the Piper Alpha Oil Rig was actually considered the company’s most productive and safest oil rig in the North Sea? Why would this rig win a safety competition, 6 months before the disaster, with the deficient permit as its most outstanding successful system?"

"The mining industry uses many types of mineral and metallurgical plants to produce saleable product from ore mined. Plant design history has left current operations with a mixture of manual operation and various forms of automated process controls. Consequently, we typically see high variability in the continuous operations together with a shortfall in the attainment of full capacity, or higher utilisation of consumables.At a level of best practice, ‘Operational Performance Excellence’ focuses on process control, using automation and control systems to deliver process optimisation. This more sophisticated delivery is a great deal more difficult than the first stage of equipment selection / installation. It includes the appropriate selection of the right instrumentation, control system, key process knowledge, individuals with a solid control engineering background / experience, and the essential backing / support of the operations management team together leading to higher value delivery. Robust solutions can be realised, considerably minimising process variation, thus leading to process optimisation. This approach results in an easier, efficient and safer process while providing considerable returns for the plant owners.How variable are your processes, and do you maintain optimised process performance with dedicated resources, modern instrumentation, ‘best practice’ control systems and performance monitoring tools? The International Labor Organization has declared mandatory adequate provision of safe workplace and safety for all workers in all occupations including the mining sector. Early scientists like Agricola (1559) who studied the health of Miners, found that there are peculiar health problems associated to their work and working environment. This unsafe working condition was one of the major factors that resulted to the Industrial revolution in England and eventually led to the establishment of regulations and laws guiding operations in all workplaces and workers in England and all over the world. Recent studies by Heinrich suggested chains of events of safety issues in the mining sector. Occupational injuries, accidents and ill health have huge social and economic implications on workers, their families and communities. Top mining top issues are respiratory diseases, noise, explosives, ventilation, fire, and explosion. However, one of the principal mechanisms for achieving Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) goals and mapping the future is government regulations of employers. In Nigeria, the situation is not different; mining operations are equally hazardous and have far reaching implications. In 1995 the Ministry for Solid Minerals was established to focus on the development of other categories of mineral products ranging from gold, coal, uranium, and tantalum deposited across the country. Prior to this an Act of Parliament Act Cap 121 of 1946, was in place to regulate amongst other contents mining safety. This was subsequently reviewed following the incidence of Lead poisoning resulting from small scale miners processing gold ore highly contaminated with lead in Zamfara state (northern Nigeria). Hundreds of children died as a result of exposure to lead poisoning, it was clear that the regulations were not sufficient (details to be discussed). However, advances have been achieved in mining engineering since then. A review team was constituted to provide a more stringent law to regulate mining operations in Nigeria. The strategies for mapping the future of OHS in mining engineering will employ amongst others setting and adopting ISO/ILO standards and enforcement; providing technical assistance; and establishing sustainable developmental structures as surveillance and compensation. The management systems approach was also developed as a result of cases of accidents. The accepted international standards guidelines and requirements will be proposed. Furthermore in mapping the future for Mining Engineering, it is suggested that most countries have their own management strategies and legislation to improve safety of workers through greater consistency and efficiency of OHS programs. Some American researchers came up with the Safety Engineering Model. The Australian Mining Council of mineral and petroleum resources after the Catastrophic Maura Disaster developed the National Mine and Safety Framework. In Canada, after the Hillcrest mine disaster in 1914, Allan shaft coal mine catastrophe in 1918, Westray mine explosion in 1992 and other disasters, Occupational Health and Safety Act R.R.O 1990 was sufficiently developed to provide adequate safety conditions and standards. In Nigeria after the disastrous Zamfara lead poisoning, which claimed the lives of hundreds of children due to exposure and lack of appropriate safety measures, stringent measures were developed by the federal ministry of Justice to address and regulate mining process in Nigeria.

The Canadian Rare Earth Elements Network (CREEN) was formally launched at the Rare Earth Symposium at The Metallurgy and Materials Society of CIM (MetSoc) Conference of Metallurgists in October 2013. CREEN is an industry-led, multi-stakeholder network focused on providing collaborative solutions that will advance Canada’s REE sector to produce a significant proportion of the global production of separated critical rare earth products by 2018. The Network is industry driven by companies with REE projects under development and supported by universities, engineering firms, national and commercial laboratories, and government. CREEN aims to accelerate the development and delivery of timely solutions to technical and economic issues specifically facing Canada’s emerging rare earth sector. It will facilitate partnerships with other national and international organizations to leverage existing research initiatives. It will also support training and education to ensure that the needed qualified human resources are available to achieve the sector’s goals. "The Kidd Creek metallurgical site has been highly integrated to maximize revenues from its base metals mines. The site's operations include a Concentrator processing 4.3 million tonnes per year of copper-zinc ore, a Copper complex producing 100,000 tonnes per year copper cathode and a Zinc Plant producing 130,000 tonnes per year of zinc metal. To improve operating efficiency with increasing emphasis on productivity, process control, process automation and process optimization have been augmented and expanded during the last decade.New microprocessor based control systems provided the opportunity for the capturing of an expanded number of process related measurements. As supervisory computers were already in place, databases could be generated with only increased disc space and database management programs required. Once the data had been accumulated and stored, a method was then required for handling, screening and sorting large volumes of information in relatively quick and easy terms in order that the stored information could be used. By 1984, a decision to use personal computers for accounting, engineering and management reporting provided the vehicle necessary to handle this data. Using commercially available software, large volumes of stored process data can be downloaded from existing databases, filtered, sorted, analyzed, graphed, displayed, projected, reported and distributed. All this can be performed in very little time."
