The Inconceivable Wealth propaganda goes on apace. Premier King, at Vancouver, has stated that we still have, untouched, natural resources, "beyond the wildest dreams." Principal Currie, in an address before the Canadian Society in New York said that Canada's resources, "are as yet merely scratched and it is not possible to compute her almost fabulous natural wealth." Mr. Meighen, in the last election campaign announced that, "under the providence of God, Canada is more richly endowed, perhaps, than any other country in the world." Four years ago a despatch was sent to Premier King "on behalf of" this Institute advising him that "Inconceivable Wealth" in minerals in this country was assured. This was made as a statement ~f "incontrovertible fact." Specifically, this despatch stated that this wealth was on such a scale that the mining industry would in the future lead all others in this country. This inventory is still in effect as far as this Institute is concerned.

In this work, strontium doped lanthanum ferrite (LSF) and their composite cathodes were fabricated by screen printing on yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) electrolytes. Their electrochemical properties were evaluated by using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and steady-state polarization methods. All the cathodes were screened by comparing their total polarization resistances before and after activation processes at different temperatures. The improved LSF composite cathodes were also screen-printed on YSZ/NiO half cells to fabricate solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), which have reached the output power densities of 170 mW/cm2 at 650 °C, 230 mW/cm2 at 700 °C, 304 mW/cm2 at 750 °C and 388 mW/cm2 at 800 °C.

"The study of the total utilization of fly ash has involved all of the known technology in the processing of this waste material into useful products. In addition, a complete knowledge of all the possible uses of fly ash and its products in the market area was probably the most important factor in evaluating the theory and practical feasibility of the total utilization of fly ash from a single large supplyLaboratory tests carried out on the separation of fly ash into different fractions were shown to improve its value and utilization. Four main fractions were studied: a fine pozzolanic low-carbon fraction; a coarse fraction for light-weight aggregate production by pelletizing and sintering; a high-iron fraction; and a carbon-rich fraction. The term ""beneficiation"" here refers to a process of separating fly ash into more useful components.Laboratory and pilot sinter strand tests were employed to optimize the sintering capability and the quality of the heat-hardened pellets through a study of the agglomeration cycle in four principal heat zones, under controlled conditions of air flow, temperature and atmosphere, and including the controlled sizing of pellets.The suitability of the heat-hardened pellets as light-weight aggregate was evaluated in test batches of concrete, which were compared with concrete containing commercial lightweight aggregate of established quality.A study of beneficiated fly ash pozzolan as a partial cementitious binder component in normal and high-temperature cured concrete was reported in a paper at the re-cent Second International Fly Ash Symposium.Samples of raw and beneficiated Lakeview ash were compared with samples of other established high-quality fly ash pozzolans. The evaluation indicated the usefulness of beneficiated Lakeview ash as a pozzolan. Economic studies indicated that to accomplish the primary objective of total utilization of any single source of fly ash (in this case. fly ash from the Lakeview Generating Station, producing approximately 400,000 tons per year), a broad knowledge of the technology of various mineral processes was essential.The design of the fly ash processing plant had to be based on the disposal of all the raw fly ash produced by the generating station. This is contrary to the normal design of a processing plant in which raw materials are supplied and produced according to product demand. The design, therefore, had to be of such flexibility as to pro-duce as wide a variety of products as possible, and the ability to market them had to be well researched and understood."

Entre 1983 et 1997, l'exploitation de la pierre de taille au Québec a été marquée par l'émergence et la consolidation de plusieurs nouvelles variétés de granit, provenant exclusivement ou presque de la Province de Grenville. Le Québec demeure toujours le principal expéditeur canadien de granit dimensionnel, avec des expéditions annuelles représentant près de quatre-vingt-dix pour cent des expéditions totales canadiennes de granit brut et transformé. La production annuelle de granit brut oscille, depuis 1994, autour de cent mille tonnes métriques. Cette production a plus que doublé de 63 000 à 140 000 tonnes métriques entre 1981 et 1990, mais elle a connu une chute importante en 1991 (67 000 tonnes métriques); cependant depuis 1994, elle est en forte progression (Ménard, 1998). En 1983, le granit dimensionnel était extrait de plus de vingt-cinq carrières, dont les trois quarts se localisaient dans la Province géologique de Grenville. Comparativement, en 1997, le Québec comptait trente-sept carrières actives, dont trente-cinq dans le Grenville (Gaudreau et al., 1998). Cette concentration des carrières dans la Province de Grenville s'explique par la demande accrue de nouveaux produits au fil des ans et par le potentiel élevé de découvertes de nouvelles variétés dans cette Province géologique. L'accessibilité au territoire, toujours plus grande, a facilité la mise en production de carrières favorisant la diversification des produits. Le ministère des Ressources naturelles du Québec (MRNQ) a consacré depuis 1980, beaucoup d'efforts dans la recherche de nouveaux gisements et de nouvelles variétés. En plus des programmes de subvention destinés aux prospecteurs ou aux compagnies, le ministère a réalisé des campagnes d'inventaire de pierre de taille, de pierre concassée et de pierre d'enrochement pour en connaître le potentiel géologique et à orienter les recherches futures (Nantel, 1983; Nantel et Martignole, 1991; Bellemare, 1995a, b, c, d, e, f, 1997, 1998a and b; Bellemare et Petryk, 1996a, b, c and d). Cette étude donne un aperçu des différentes variétés de pierres extraites dans la Province de Grenville entre 1983 et 1997, les situe dans leur contexte géologique et en localise les principales régions productrices. The corrosion and wear properties of a series of chrome white iron (CWI) castings were study using electrochemical and low-stress sliding abrasion tests. The results confirm that the corrosion resistance of these materials is largely dependant on the quantity of chromium in the matrix, while the wear resistance is mainly controlled by the volume fraction of chromium carbides. A pseudo-wear/corrosion map is developed to identify alloy compositions that may be suited for erosion/corrosion conditions.

Pressure oxidation (POX) leaching has been commercially applied to refractory gold ores since the 1980s. In the process, sulphide material is oxidized and dissolved in order to release the gold encapsulated in the sulphide matrix, making the gold available for further recovery. Redox potential is a significant parameter during POX, however it is only measured ex-situ at atmospheric conditions. In-situ redox potential measurement would provide instant information that allowing adjusting the process parameters accordingly. In the present study, redox potential measurements were performed during POX of sulphide material at high temperatures and high pressures. The working electrode was an Ir electrode combined with a flow-through reference electrode in a novel and robust configuration. Experiments were performed in a 2 L titanium autoclave, at 200–220°C, 50–110 psi oxygen overpressure, and 10–30% solids mass fraction. Temperature and oxygen pressure conditions were selected in order to reflect POX of refractory gold ores. Results show that the Ir electrode is consistent with theory and is able to perform well under these conditions, showing promise as a new in-situ sensor.

"In projects involving resource development and plant optimization, the use of in-mine geophysics can deliver considerable benefit. The value proposition lies in using very high resolution downhole measurements to model process-plant outcomes. The calibration procedure used to convert in-situ physical properties into process engineering parameters is illustrated using two iron ore projects. Data correction was related either to orebody structure or mineral formation. The deliverable from this approach is a series of high-definition sections indicating the variability of ore delivered to a front-end separation plant and parameters for mine scheduling and stockpile design needed for maximum product yield.RÉSUMÉ Dans des projets de développement des ressources et d’optimisation de l’usine, l’utilisation de la géophysique minière peut engendrer des bénéfices considérables. La valeur de la proposition réside dans l’utilisation de diagraphies à très haute résolution afin de modéliser les résultats de l’usine de traitement. La procédure d’étalonnage utilisée pour convertir les propriétés physiques in situ en des paramètres d’ingénierie de procédés est illustrée en se basant sur deux projets de minerai de fer. La correction des données porte sur la structure de la masse minérale ou de la formation minérale. Les livrable attendus de cette approche sont une série de sections à haute définition, signalant la variabilité du minerai livré à une usine de séparation de première ligne, des paramètres pour l’échéancier de la mine et la conception des haldes requis pour une production optimale."

The need for quantitative mineralogical data to characterize ore types before they are processed is becoming increasingly necessary. Mineralogical data (modal abundances, grain size, liberation/locking characteristics, mineral textures and associations) can provide invaluable information to facilitate the identification of metallurgical issues that may arise during processing of a particular ore. This paper will discuss the use of QEMSCAN analysis in conjunction with bench scale flotation test work to determine metallurgical characteristics for several ore types that will be fed to the Morenci concentrator upon commencement.

Australia is one of the world’s leading exporters of bulk commodities and the extensive use of sampling equipment is key to the successful management of each mining operation. At the process plant, without a full understanding of the feed, product and tails, it is impossible to fully optimise the performance of the plant, such that the metallurgical balance is often open to error. At the port, a statistically correct, bias free and compliant sampling system is crucial to ensuring exported minerals are reflective of their true value and to avoid penalties. Over the last decade, as a result of the iron ore boom, there has been high demand for reliable, representative and standard compliant solids sample systems in Australia. This paper reviews several solids sampling applications at Australian mine sites, the challenges and experience gained and how the implementation of reliable representative sampling systems has provided better understanding of plant process performance, improved plant control and overall benefits to the operations. INTRODUCTION Mining is the primary contributor to the Australian economy with Australia ranking in the top 4 in economic resources for 21 primary industrial minerals in 2016 (Britt, et al., 2017). Australia is one of the world leaders in the export of the majority of its commodities including gold, copper and iron ore (Britt, et al., 2017). Therefore, a suitable and standard compliant sampling system is essential for evaluating plant performance and content verification. At the mine and at the port, the larger iron ore miners in Australia have developed stockpile models to predict the grade of their ore down to individual blocks of the stockpile. This allows the miner to create the right blend of material for sale to their customers and ensures they are not underselling their product or at risk of penalties for impurities or low grade. As an example, the average difference between the benchmark 62% Fe and low grade 58% Fe fines at the time of this report averaged US $20/tonne according to the Metal Bulletin Iron Ore Index (Fastmarkets MB, 2019). At a shipload of 180kt this would be a variation of US $3.6M. Whilst this is an extreme example, it highlights the economic importance of producing the correct grade product and a recognised representative sample of said product.

Deep roasting in fluid bed roasters is the first unit operation in Inco&apos;s "roast-reduction smelting" process for the treatment of nickel sulphide concentrates. The roaster product, a low sulphur calcine, is reduction smelted with coke in an electric furnace to yield a sulphur-deficient matte which is then converted to low (<1%) iron matte in Peirce-Smith converters. Due to the deep roasting, a minimal amount of sulphur dioxide is evolved in the smelting and converting stages. Sulphur is eliminated from the concentrate almost exclusively in the roasters in a single, continuous, strong, gas stream suitable for treatment in an acid plant. This paper discusses the commercial scale testing of deep fluid bed roasting of nickel concentrate at Inco&apos;s Thompson Smelter as part of two commercial scale campaigns on roast reduction smelting conducted in 1981-1982. Slurry feeding, practised during the second campaign, permitted excellent control of the air/concentrate ratio in the roaster and, in turn, good control of sulphur elimination (about 80% of input). Smooth autogenous operation with high oxygen efficiencies (about 95%) was promoted by operating at bed temperatures of830°C to 850°C with calcine recycle. High throughputs and the desired metallurgy were achieved. The extensive testwork conducted during the two experimental RRS campaigns demonstrated thot deep fluid bed roasting of nickel concentrate at high oxygen efficiency is a technically viable operation.

"Exampling of the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, this study investigates the application of the Drilling Survey System (DRISS) in both Drilling and Blasting (D&B)- and Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM)-excavated sections. In the D&B section, a nonlinear relationship exists between drilling energy and uniaxial compressive strength of rock mass, in which a reasonable coefficient of determination can be analyzed statistically. Additionally, the DRISS accurately predicted an unfavorable section with a valuable position. The magnitude of uniaxial compressive strength back calculated using DRISS data also matches those acquired from geological investigations with different approaches. Study results indicate that the DRISS is an effective tool for fore-probing of both D&B- and TBM-excavated tunnels. INTRODUCTIONModern advancements in geological and geophysical investigations, and drilling techniques, have provided valuable information for detecting and interpreting geological conditions of rock tunnels with a resolution of several to ten of meters (Brückl et al., 2001, 2008, Lorang et al., 2005). Nevertheless, construction risks remain considerable during tunnel excavation, especially when a tunnel was excavated by a Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM). Predictions of the local fault, shear zone, and other minor geological features, which may cause moderate collapse or excessive deformation of rocks surrounding the tunnel, before tunnel excavation is highly desirable for high-quality tunnel construction and economically efficient project management.Rather than conventional geophysical prospection methodologies, which always favor large-scale investigation with moderate precision, this study focuses on the drilling method probing ahead of a tunnel. The goal of such an investigation is not only to prevent catastrophic collapse, but also to provide quantitative or semi-quantitative information for estimation of the mechanical parameters of rock mass.For the tunneling task in the Tsengwen Reservoir Transbasin Diversion (TRTD) in southern Taiwan, a drilling survey system is adopted for fore probing. Data collected from both drilling and blasting (D&B) and TBM-excavated sections are analyzed statistically and discussed. "The Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company are planning to construct a permanent storage facility for high-level nuclear waste at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository relates to large fracture shear displacements, since these may damage intersected waste containers. Although details in fracture surface geometries are known to influence slip magnitudes and distributions, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties due to lack of relevant field-scale data and to limitations in available modelling tools. The purpose of the work described in this paper is to explore the possibilities to use the distinct element code 3DEC to generate and analyze models with isolated, non-planar fractures and, based on the results of such models, get perspectives on the influence of basic disturbances such as ridges, steps and waves. Given the model set-up, fracture segments with orientations deviating from the critical one will contribute to stabilize the fracture. As a result, all analyzed non-planar fractures slip less than the critically oriented planar fracture. We demonstrate that the angle of deviation is the most influential parameter determining the slip magnitude for comparable surface geometries. Similarly inclined steps and ridges have almost equal slip reductions despite differences in surface area restricting the movement. Although it may be possible to translate the influence of such irregularities to an effective coefficient of friction that could be used as input to models with idealized planar fractures, additional analyses with randomly shaped and distributed asperities, different fracture sizes and with alternative stress loads, need to be carried out to devise a defensible strategy for this type of parameter variation. INTRODUCTIONThe Swedish Nuclear Fuel and Waste Management Company’s (SKB) concept for deep geological storage of high-level nuclear waste is the KBS-3 method according to which the waste will be encapsulated in copper canisters and deposited, surrounded by compacted bentonite clay, in vertical deposition holes at about 500 m depth in fractured crystalline rock (SKB 2011). A site has been selected in the Forsmark area, which is located some 120 km north of the Swedish capital Stockholm. One potential concern for the long-term performance of the repository that has been identified by SKB (SKB 2011) is related to large shear displacements along repository host rock fractures induced by a nearby earthquake, since these may cause mechanical damage to intersected waste containers. Due to lack of relevant data at the appropriate field scale and to limitations in available modelling tools, fractures are commonly approximated as planar features with lab-scale properties. The standard numerical tool, 3DEC (Itasca 2013), used in SKB’s rock mechanics analyses, for example, generates planar fractures by default. Results from dynamic 3DEC earthquake-models (Fälth et al. 2010) currently provide input to layout decisions, i.e., the diameter of the smallest planar fractures that must be avoided when deciding on waste container positions at different distances from potential earthquake faults. It is, however, well known that fracture surfaces are rough or undulating on a wide range of scales (e.g., Candela et al. 2012) and that such deviations from planarity influence the mechanical behaviour of the fractures (e.g., Dieterich and Smith 2009, Marshall and Morris 2012, Ritz and Pollard 2012). It will probably never be a realistic option to attempt to represent the geometrical complexity of a population of fractures of different size, shape and surface structure in any large-scale rock mechanical analysis relevant for the performance assessments of the nuclear waste repository. There is increasing use of acid leach extraction methods at elevated temperatures and pressures by the mining industry. In many locations there are limited supplies of fresh water, and waters with higher chloride contents must be used, making conditions more corrosive. The fluids downstream of the main autoclave are hot, acidic, oxidizing and contain chlorides and present a challenge to the mining community to ensure reliable operation. Zeron 100 is a high strength superduplex stainless stee, that offers high corrosion resistance at a cost effective price. The paper presents a combination of laboratory data and service experience, particularly in the aggressive fluids found in downstream processing.

The New Level Mine project (NLMP), the planned underground expansion of the El Teniente mine in Rancagua, Chile, is expected to reach a daily extraction rate of 137 to 180 ktpd upon achieving full capacity. Production is planned to start in the year 2017 and the current plan is to meet that target through two development phases, from the year 2012 to 2014 and from the year 2015 to 2017. To achieve the 2012 to 2014 underground development schedule, the ventilation requirements have been estimated in the range of 189 m3/s (400 kcfm), and cannot be made available without significant modifications to the current system of El Teniente. As a result, a certain number of alternatives were explored to find a solution to this shortfall, for example, adding raises to generate parallel airways and installing fans to reinforce the current ventilation system. From the alternatives studied, the installation of a second main fan (system) in parallel to an existing one was identified as the best solution, and selected for implementation, however the location was not ideal and there were concerns as to the operation of both fans once the second fan was installed. This paper presents the study used to estimate the operational points of both the current and the new fan, and to justify the parallel installation of the additional main fan. An additional computational fluid dynamics study was undertaken to validate the operational point, given the particular geometry of the fan?s location and placement, to guarantee a stable operation of the fans. Finally, the protocols arising out of this work for starting the fans, and operating them in parallel to avoid generating a stall condition and damaging the investment are discussed.

"As part of a study to evaluate factors affecting tankroom air quality, the mechanism of aerosol generation from bursting bubbles in electrowinning operations has been investigated. Typically 2 to 3 mg/m2.s are produced in zinc tankrooms. Analysis shows that the rate of production of film drops (geometric mean diameter - 2 urn] increases with decreasing bubble size, and that jet droplets (geometric mean diameter - 20 um) are not produced with gas bubble larger than - 4 mm. Both mechanisms of drop formation and current efficiency are affected by surface active agents, with an over-all reduction in emission of up to 60% to 70% being achievable. A source control system which does not adversely affect electrolyte properties is always preferred, and coalescence of all gas bubbles in to a continuous stream of gas at a single point on the electrolyte surface would eliminate aerosol emissions. This objective was the basis for design of a coalescence device which, in laboratory tests, reduced the emission rate by over 95%.The control device fit s over the electrodes in the electrowinning cell and is partially immersed in the electrolyte. A number of changes in the design which resulted in significant improvement in the performance of the device are reported.Field tests have shown that only about 75% of the aerosol below 10 um can be eliminated by coalescence. The remainder (up to 95% of the total) is controlled by coalescence of droplets, by impaction on the exposed collector surface and gravitational settling.The device does not interfere with operation of the tankroom, handles the effect of surges in power during harvesting, and is simple and inexpensive to maintain. IntroductionDuring the electrowinning of metals (such as zinc and copper) gases are evolved along the electrode surface forming small bubbles. The bubbles travel upwards and burst on the electrolyte free surface generating, in this way, small droplets. Because the electrolyte is often highly acidic or contains toxic materials, the whole process can result in the formation of an aerosol in the atmosphere above the electrowinning cells which poses a serious health hazard to workers in the area, and corrodes equipment."

"In many plant trial s(1,2) it has been proven that very small amounts (10 to 20 ppm) of uranium dissolved in mine water can be effectively recovered by the use of ion exchange resins and this uranium recovery has many advantages. In this paper an economic analysis at different levels of uranium contamination and at different market prices of uranium are described.For this study an operating mine-mill complex with a sulphuric acid leach circuit, followed by solvent extraction (SX) process, is considered, where contaminated mine water is available in excess of process requirements. lt is further assumed that the sulphuric acid eluant containing uranium would be mixed with the mill pregnant liquor stream that proceeds to the SX plant for final uranium recovery.Recovery by Ion ExchangeMine water, in this study, is defined as the water coming from the underground mine, or mine pits, and the run-off water from stockpiles, mine shops, crushing plant , washdown areas, etc.In nature, uranium mainly occurs in two stages; reduced (tetravalent) and oxidized (hexavalent) . "This paper discusses the importance of considering residence time distribution (RTD) in the design of flotation and mixing circuits and in the analysis of operating problems. The experiences and successes of Brunswick Mining in this area are covered and include: the development of a practical RTD measurement technique using pulp conductivity, baffle installation to improve the RTD of existing process equipment, and the method in which RTD considerations have been used to design the newest flotation and conditioning operations. IntroductionThe use of residence time distributions (RTDs) in the design and analysis of unit operations is well understood by the chemical engineering profession in while mineral processing engineers have tended to rely on empirical and rule-of-thumb factors. For example, in scale up from laboratory and pilot test results to full size flotation plant design, empirical rule s are often used to establish residence time and number of cells in the bank. Coleman suggests a factor of at least 2, and up to 5 for gold ores, be applied to laboratory determined flotation times. This is further illustrated in Table I, taken from Denver equipment.The number of cells in series to achieve the required retention time while minimizing short-circuiting has generated a variety of conclusions (Table 2). Obviously there is less than complete agreement on the subject. Young notes that a clear difference of opinion has emerged and cites as extremes, (i) the publications of Outokumpum showing unimpaired recovery for its largest machines (38 m3) compared to equivalent retention times for numerous smaller machines, and (ii) the experiences of Eastern European countries where the practice is to install banks of 30 unit s or more, operating in series, often with unit retention times of only a fraction of a minute.The empirical factors used by engineers presumably account for other than tested feed conditions, inefficiencies in large continuous machines, inevitable day-to-day circuit disruptions, gradual equipment deterioration and any other safety factor the engineer feels compelled to incorporate. An understanding of RTD concepts and techniques should help the practicing mineral engineer to develop more soundly based factors. This paper relates the experiences of Brunswick Mining in using RTD techniques in the unit operations of flotation and mixing."

The author has covered •briefly the location of the heavy •and asphalt-base oil fields, their geology, current drilling and production practice, the location of the •refineries capable of handling heavy crude, their products and markets, and the problems and future prospects of the industry.Location and Description of FieldsThe term heavy oil is generally used to denote crude of 20.9° gravity and under. Since the products from heavy oil are also to a lesser extent obtained from asphalt-base crudes of higher gravity, some mention will be made here of the latter; but in general the emphasis of the paper is on heavy oil as such.In the order of their production to date, the heavy oil fields and those light oil fields which produce asphalt-base crudes are : Lloydminster, Taber, Vermilion, Conrad, Princess, and Wainwright.The Lloydminster oil field has not only produced most of the heavy oil, but also is currently the largest producer, supplying at the present time about 80 per cent of the heavy and asphalt-base crudes produced in Western Canada."
