Coal was first banked by the Dominion Coal Company, Limited, in 1898, near No. 2 Colliery, the same site as is presently used for that purpose. Though today there are banks at Glace Bay, Sydney, and Sydney Mines, these notes, except when otherwise desirable, will be confined to describing the practice as developed at the No. 2 Banking Station, Glace Bay, as being typical of methods obtaining at all sites. Storing The manner in which the coal was piled is illustrated diagrammatically in the accompanying sketch. A train of coal was brought on the main trestle, which extended the full length of the banking ground at a height of 22 to 39 feet above the natural surface, and dumped into bins which were integral with the trestle work. Chutes from these bins permitted the coal to be fed into 3-ton cars, which were horse drawn laterally on narrow gauge tracks laid about 10 ft. centres, to a maximum distance of 400ft. from the trestle. These cars were end-dump and as the pile extended laterally the narrow gauge tracks were lengthened by shorter or longer filling pieces, so that their ends were always kept at the brow of the bank. Much coal, however, had to be dumped directly on the tracks and hand trimmed to fill the valleys, and level off, between the tracks.

The reaction of O2 with the carbon anode is considered as the main parasitic chemical reaction affecting Hall-Heroult process anodes. The current study aims at investigating the influence of the microstructure of baked anode on its overconsumption. Samples were removed from different positions of an industrial anode. Density, porosity, Lc and BET specific surface area were measured. The anode reactivity was evaluated based on the weight losses for the samples resulting from the reaction of anode with air at 550°C after 7h. The essential parameters determined to control the air reactivity are closed porosity, Lc and pores with a pore entrance radius of 1.5, 8.5 and 12 p.m. The knowledge of effects of these parameters allows better understanding of the reactivity of anodes and consequently reduction of their overconsumption in electrolysis bath.

Cyanide destruction by Caro’s acid is one process commonly employed by gold operations to meet regulatory requirements and/or the International Cyanide Management Code compliance for weak acid dissociable (WAD) cyanide in cyanidation tails or waste water from such operations. Typically smallscale bench tests to evaluate and assess the suitability of the Caro’s acid destruction process are conducted. Additionally, the experimental procedure used during these preliminary investigations may also differ from that implemented at the full-scale. This paper presents the results from a fundamental investigation of the Caro’s acid process to establish a more detailed understanding of the impact that the experimental procedure has on the destruction of cyanide. In particular, it was found that the control of pH was important to avoid copper(I) cyanide precipitation at low pH and maximise WAD cyanide destruction. Residual peroxide in the preparation of Caro’s acid has the potential for subsequent cyanide destruction and could be exploited.

"A model based control strategy was implemented at Loulo Gold Mine in Mali, to stabilise the thickener underflow stream density. This stream acts as the feed to the leaching circuit. pH control of the leaching circuit was integrated with the model-based controller due to slow process dynamics that are not suited to PID control. The controller performance was quantified over a period of 6 months, and was compared to the performance before implementation. The model based controller reduced process variability for both thickener underflow density and pH considerably, and resulted in a reduction in flocculant and lime consumption of 9.32 and 6.55%, respectively. INTRODUCTION Reagent consumption in gold processing plants significantly contributes to the total operational costs. In a typical Carbon-in-pulp (CIP) circuit, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contribute to approximately 15% of the total operational costs (Stange, 1999). At Loulo Gold Mine, the reagent consumption associated with leaching, adsorption, elution and regeneration contributes to 6% of the total operational costs. As such, a reduction in reagent consumption will present a significant opportunity for savings on operating expenditure. Variability in feed ore characteristics results in continuous changes in steady state operating regions, which presents process control challenges as a result of the long residence times in some of the process units associated with gold processing plants. Overdosing often occurs in the presence of process variability to ensure safe operation and to maintain recovery targets. As a means of reducing reagent consumption and accounting for significant changes in the feed to gold plants, some of the plants have resorted to improving their process control strategies around their circuits. This paper focuses on the implementation of a model predictive based controller at Loulo Gold Mine on their thickener and Carbon-in-leach (CIL) tank to: •,stabilise the thickener underflow density, and •,the CIL tank pH."

"Medium Voltage (MV) metal clad switchgear is referred to as the voltage class from 2.4 kV to 38 kV. Technological advances in circuit breaker designs over the last 20 years have given rise to retrofit options in lieu of complete replacement for older outdated circuit breaker technology. This paper examines the four MV breaking techniques that exist in industry and investigates various retrofit versus refurbish options for switchgear modernization and life extension. IntroductionThe life extension and upgrade of medium voltage circuit breakers is becoming an increasingly important issue in today’s modern industrial facilities from both a reliability and safety standpoint. Unscheduled downtime, loss of production, and plant safety issues are just some of the concerns that need to be addressed with aging switchgear. A thorough examination of the available breaking mediums allows an informed decision to be made when the time comes to assess equipment performance. If you look back over the history of medium voltage breakers, you will find that there have been four breaking techniques developed and widely used:• air magnetic;• minimum oil;• vacuum; and• SF6.Many facilities that were constructed 25 to 30 years ago relied on air magnetic or minimum oil circuit breakers in their distribution systems. At the time, these were the only “tried and tested” options and they afforded good service. Since then, however, newer technology has given us the vacuum and SF6 mediums which have both proven their reliability and monopolized the market. All the methods have their particular place in industry and what follows is a summary of the advantages, disadvantages, and chronological development of each breaking technique."

"Roof bolts are subjected to axial stresses, shear stresses, or both. Axial and shear stresses were compared between roof bolts machined with two and three slots. Shear stresses perpendicular to and at an angle to the shear planes were evaluated by analyzing a three-slot instrumented roof bolt, performing laboratory tests on two- and three-slot roof bolts, and conducting in-situ test analyses. Threeslot bolts appear to provide a complete bending strain profile, requiring no prior knowledge of the estimated shear-plane orientation. Minimum displacements occur in roof bolts installed perpendicular to rather than at an angle to the shear planes.RÉSUMÉ Les boulons d’ancrage dans le toit d’une mine sont sujets à des contraintes axiales, des contraintes de cisaillement ou les deux. On a comparé les contraintes axiales et de cisaillement de boulons d’ancrage usinés avec deux ou trois fentes. Les contraintes de cisaillement perpendiculaires et à angle aux plans de cisaillement ont été évaluées en analysant un boulon d’ancrage de toit à trois fentes, en effectuant des essais en laboratoire sur des boulons d’ancrage de toit à deux et à trois fentes et en effectuant des analyses de tests in situ. Les boulons à trois fentes semblent fournir un profil complet de résistance aux contraintes de flexion, sans avoir besoin de connaître l’orientation estimée du plan de cisaillement. "The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. Amongst their various applications it is well worth mentioning their use in electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, as well as in special inks - as those used in radar invisible airplanes. TV and computer monitor screens present as coating a powder containing some rare earth elements, mainly Europium and Yttrium. The recovery of the RE elements from electronic scrap is extremely important as the economic and environmental issues are concerned. This paper describes the study of the Eu and Y recovery from e-scraps. The first step of the process was the leaching of the powder obtained by manually scraping the inside surface of the screen. After the optimization of the leaching, the dissolution of Eu and Y was higher than 98 w/t% and a pregnant sulfuric liquor containing 11.9 g L-1 Y and 0.72 g L-1 Eu was obtained. The second step was the separation of the metals found in the liquor by the solvent extraction technique. The separation of Eu and Y was carried out in a counter current circuit compound of 3 extraction stages, 7 scrubbing stages and 15 stripping stages. DEHPA was used as the extractant, whereas a diluted sulfuric acid solution was applied as scrubbing agent and a hydrochloric acid solution at high concentration was used as the stripping agent.INTRODUCTIONThe rare earths (RE) are a moderately abundant group of 17 elements composed of lanthanides, scandium and yttrium. Amongst the RE, promethium (Pm) is extremely rare, however several of the RE elements are not very rare and occur dispersed in a variety of forms (Greenwood & Earnshaw, 1984; Tyler, 2004).The innumerable applications of the RE elements are based on their particular properties, mainly their spectroscopic and magnetic properties (Martins & Isolani, 2005). The technological development observed in recent years has stimulated the application of rare earth (RE) elements. They have been used in agriculture, electronics, superconductors, nuclear medicine, automobile industry, special inks – as those used in radar invisible airplanes, X-ray screens, high intensity mercury vapour light bulbs, neutron scintilators, charged-particle detectors and optical memory reading systems (Maestro & Huguenin, 1995; Nagaosa & Binghua, 1997; Sánchez et al., 1999)."

THE following notes are offered primarily to show that industrial minerals or their products have a much more important place in the metallurgical industry than is perhaps generally realized, and with the hope also that some statement by the metallurgical consumer of the relative merits of various materials for particular requirements or services will l;>e of value to the industrial mineral producer. These notes are not in any way presented as complete. Also, some of the statements made may be debatable. The grouping adopted is as follows: (1) Refractories; (2) Fluxes; (3) Construction materials; and ( 4) Miscellaneous applications. Fuels are not dealt with in the present paper. REFRACTORIES GENERAL: Refractories are materials which will withstand high temperatures with-out melting or becoming markedly soft or pasty. While their primary function is to withstand heat, they are usually called upon to resist one or more of the following destructive influences: abrasion, pressure, corrosion by slags or fluxes, and rapid changes in temperature. Refractory materials may be conveniently divided into three classes: (1) Acid refractories-consisting of silica, or containing silica as their chief constituent. They combine more or less readily with metallic oxides, forming silicates, and are hence termed 'acid'. The most important of these are quartz, quartzite, siliceous sand, tripoli, Dinas rock, and ganister. Most fire-clays, although generally considered neutral sub-stances, contain relatively small amounts of free silica and are, to that extent, acid. (2) Neutral refractories-the term is merely relative in most cases, since, at high temperature, many of the refractories that are classed as neutral will react chemically with a strong base, functioning as a weak acid; or, conversely, with a strong acid, functioning as a weak base. Chrome and graphite are the most nearly neutral of all the commonly used refractory materials.

With the demand for larger diameter raises under all ground conditions and the increasing price of drill rods and operating costs, it was evident that there was a need for a raise borer with a variable-speed drive and fast-response torque limiting control. The raise boring machine described in this paper was developed after several years of market research and discussions with mine operators and construction contractors. This paper discusses the Ingersoll-Rand raise borers with the solid-state controlled DC motor drives. These machines have gained wide acceptance in the five-year period since being placed in operation and are designed to accommodate the range of raise diameters and lengths most required today.

The rising energy costs and environmental considerations in mining necessitate the development of energy-efficient copper and gold processing plants. This paper presents an analysis of technical strategies aimed at reducing energy consumption in these plants. Key approaches include the integration of advanced ore sorting technologies, High Pressure Grinding Rolls (HPGR), Coarse Particle Flotation (CPF), and high-intensity flotation. Ore sorting enables early-stage waste removal, reducing the downstream processing load and associated energy use. HPGR technology, recognized for its energy efficiency, contributes to significant energy savings in comminution circuits by reducing reliance on traditional grinding methods. CPF technology further optimizes flotation performance by enabling the recovery of larger particles, thereby decreasing the need for fine grinding and reducing overall power demand. High-intensity flotation units enhance separation efficiency and mineral recovery in a compact footprint, offering further reductions in energy consumption. Together, these technologies provide energy saving opportunities to achieve a more sustainable and economically viable processing operation. "The Preston East Dome gold mine is in the southeastern part of Porcupine district, Ontario, 5 miles southeast of Timmins, and immediately south of the property of Dome Mines, Limited.The claims now owned by this Company were originally staked in 1909. After the property had remained dormant for many years, the present Company was organized in 1936 to resume development operations. Two shafts had been sunk: at the time of the early work on the claims, but lateral work from these failed to reach the ore deposits. A successful diamond drilling campaign undertaken under the direction of D. G. H. Wright, however, was followed by the sinking of a five-compartment shaft arid the erection of a mill. From the start of operations to the end of 1944, 1,292,000 tons of ore averaging $11.60 in gold a ton have been mined.An outstanding feature in this mine is the occurrence of the major gold deposits in quartz porphyry intrusives, though minor deposits are also found in the adjacent Keewatin volcanics. Most of the ore occurs in fractures, but the filling was accompanied by varying degrees of replacement of schistose wall-rocks. The ore deposits may be classified as:"

Iron sulfides are part of many ore deposits affecting flotation separation of non-ferrous base metals from them. Open-circuit potential (OCP), potentiodynamic polarization, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) measurements were carried out with pyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes to investigate their reactivity under various flotation conditions, which involved the use of TETA, SMBS, and their combination. TETA was found to adsorb on the electrode surfaces causing a significant increase in charge transfer resistance of the product formed, which was most significant at OCP. This effect is much less with SMBS, indicating its greater surface reactivity compared to TETA. The combined use of these reagents decreases charge transfer resistance to a greater degree than that experienced with their individual uses. Addition of Cu2+ as a potential activator to this system nearly eliminates the action of TETA on the electrode surface, which can be attributed to sequestration/chelate formation in liquid phase. The relative effects of these reagents on pyrrhotite electrode are similar to that of pyrite. The main difference between the pyrite and pyrrhotite electrodes is that the observed charge transfer resistance on the pyrrhotite surface with each reagent case is significantly lower by 3 to 4 fold. This is compatible with its anodic nature and ease of oxidation since the OCP value of pyrrhotite is lower than that of pyrite. Results are discussed in relation to flotation/depression behavior of these iron sulfide minerals in mineral separation processes.

The operation at Phu Kham commenced design and construction in early 2006 and was commissioned in May 2008. This paper will examine and discuss the project from the inception of flow sheet development and equipment selection, equipment design and manufacture, construction, commissioning and ramp up to full production. The paper will touch on the strategies employed to achieve a short schedule and the efficient use of capital, but with the main emphasis on the grinding circuit. Various challenges during the early years of operation will be discussed including the effect of ore characteristics, including competency, on the performance of the grinding circuit. Actions to overcome these challenges and to enhance performance will also be discussed. Finally, current and future plans to improve the performance of the grinding circuit and the overall plant will be summarised.

In the Yellowknife geologic province, 2,600-million-year-old granites are cut by three sets of diabase or gabbro dyke : (1) large dykes striking 70°E to E-W, (2) rare dykes striking N-S to 30°E and (3) an abundant swarm striking N 10°-300W. Preliminary potassium-argon dating has been carried out on whole-rock samples of the chilled margins and coarse centers of the dykes, and on mineral separates from the dykes and contact aureoles. Data from seventeen dated samples suggest that the dyke sets were intruded during three periods of basaltic magmatism -2,200, 1,500 and 1000 million years ago. The two earlier periods closely follow the time of emplacement of granites in the Yellowknife and Churchill geologic provinces. The latest diabase dykes occurring in the Yellowknife province are temporally related to a widespread basaltic magmatism, for which the term Keweenawan is not appropriate. An applicable Eluex process was developed for acid in-situ leaching (ISL) uranium mine in Bayanwula. In this process, uranium was adsorbed with strong base anion resin from the pregnant solution, then the loaded resin was eluted by sulfuric acid. After D2EHPA extraction, the concentrated eluate was enriched, and the loaded organic phase was stripped by sodium carbonate. The yellow cake was obtained by sodium hydroxide precipitation at last. The uranium concentration in the loaded strip solution was 52.8 g/L. Parameters of the process were determined, and the impact of the Eluex process in underground leaching was also investigated. In industrial design, 95% of raffinate went back to elution and 5% back to in-situ leaching. No significant effect on uranium leaching or resin adsorption was found.
